ANTONI CLAVÉ

25. Les Saintes-Maries

lithograph, 1951-52, ed 165, signed, 43 x 59 cm,

£1250

BUy oNliNe

Born in Barcelona in 1913, Clavé was a painter, printmaker, sculptor, stage designer and costume designer. After taking evening classes in drawing, he began to experiment with paintings and collages. He moved to Paris in 1939 but only began to paint seriously in 1941 under the influence of Vuillard and Bonnard. From 1956 his work gradually became more and more abstract. He died in 2005.

14

JEAN COCTEAU

Provenance: Tristan Tzara. Tzara was the founder in 1916 in Zurich of the then avant-garde movement called Dada and wrote to Cocteau thinking him a possible valuable contributor to his new movement. We know that several poems were subsequently published in the Anthologie Dada in 1919. However, subsequent collaboration was probably prevented by the intervention of the French writer André Breton, the eventual founder of the avant - garde movement 'Les Surréalistes'. Breton then considered Cocteau too superficial and flippant to be taken seriously. Prov: Albemarle Gallery label and Michael Parkin Gallery label on reverse.
