IT’S TIME TO “HOP” INTO FALL BEERS Fall is right around the corner and will be here before you know it! Consumers will start to transition from the thirst-quenching, easy-to-drink beers to more moderate-bodied beers come early autumn. Below, we outline the most popular beer styles that will help satisfy this fall demand: Oktoberfest and Pumpkin Ale
OKTOBERFEST The most iconic and popular fall beer style is Oktoberfest, also referred to as Märzen style, Oktoberfest beers exhibit a dark gold to deep orange-red color, a complex maltiness, and a moderate hop bitterness. Oktoberfest began in 1810 with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The grand festival and horse races of the wedding were repeated the following years and soon caught on as a tradition. Beers served at Oktoberfest must be brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot (German beer purity law) within the city limits of Munich,— Under those laws, only 6 breweries may produce beer for the festival: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Spatenbräu, and Staatliches Hofbräu. Today, Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival to celebrate German beer and has over 6 million people in attendance that consume more than 7 million liters of beer. Below, we describe three popular Oktoberfest beers available on the Jersey Shore: Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest, Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest, and Paulaner Oktoberfest.

Brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot, Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest pours a chestnut brown color, smells of malt and caramel, and tastes of sweet malt with a slight nuttiness.
Brewed in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest pours a deep copper color and has a malty flavor with subtle notes of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Imported from Munich, Germany, Paulaner Oktoberfest pours an amber color with a frothy foam head and has medium-dark caramel notes and malty flavor.
PUMPKIN ALE Pumpkin Ale is a flavored beer style that has exploded in popularity in the past few years. Although Pumpkin Ale can vary greatly in potency of flavors and aromas, the classic cinnamon and fall spices (nutmeg, clovers, allspice, and ginger) combined with the unique flavor of pumpkin draws a large and loyal following. Many Pumpkin Ales have a heavy mouth feel or almost a mild starchy consistency. Pumpkin Ales tend to be malt forward and usually have little to no perceivable hop presence. Below, we describe two popular Pumpkin Ales available on the Jersey Shore: Wolaver’s Pumpkin Ale and Long Trail Pumpkin Ale.
Wolaver’s Pumpkin Ale Brewed exclusively with organic ingredients, Wolver’s Pumpkin Ale pours a cloudy, orange-amber color and has aromas of sweet malt and pumpkin cooking spices. The taste starts malty, moves peppery, and finishes with a pumpkin pie flavor.
Long Trail Pumpkin Ale Brewed in Bridgewater, Vermont, Long Trail Pumpkin Ale pours an orange-copper color with an ivory, foam head. The aroma include cloves, vanilla, ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The taste closely mirrors the smell and finishes balanced.

CIDER PROFILE COMPARISONS Don’t think you are a cider person? Maybe you haven’t tried the right style for your pallet. Cider styles can vary dramatically in sweetness (completely dry to syrupy sweet) and body (light-bodied to heavy-bodied). MEET THE BREWER: DAVE HARTMANN Head Brewer Long Trail Brewery 5520 U.S. 4 Bridgewater, VT 05035
How did you get involved with brewing beer and how did you get involved with Long Trail?
I started with Long Trail in 1992, a few years after the first batch was brewed. I’d been studying Environmental Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechinic Institute and one of the things I learned was how to homebrew beer: I had a very cool professor who was an avid home brewer. I also learned to appreciate great beer; there was a wonderful British Pub near the school called Holmes and Watson that had a huge selection (for the time) of beers. In the early 90s, there were really just the pioneering breweries around, scattered here and there all over the country. I talked to a bunch of them, looking to turn my home brewing hobby into a career. Long Trail was one of the ones I really looked up to, and fortunately, they offered me a job.
How long have you been there?
Over 20 years, but truth be told I took a hiatus to take some brewing education at UC Davis, and was involved in some different breweries for a number of years before returning. I worked in California, NY, Minneapolis, Pennsylvania and had a stint in Bavaria working with distant relations at Brauerei Hartmann, near Bamberg. I returned as Brewmaster at Long Trail in 2009, it really feels like home to me. Always has.
Are you originally from Vermont?
I grew up on Long Island, actually. I used to come to Vermont when I was in college, and really love the laid back culture and all the biking, hiking, kayaking and snow sports up here. It’s a really great place to be, I really feel lucky to have ended up here. It’s also a great beer state, everyone seems to want to start their own brewery up here these days.
What makes your new pumpkin beer stand out from the rest and what can you tell us about the Brush and Barrel Imperial Pumpkin?
Pumpkin beers are a New England tradition going back to colonial days, and we had never done one until last year because there’s already some good ones out there. But then we thought -- heck, we can really nail this. It’s the kind of beer that’s right in our wheelhouse: a rich, malty ale. We think of hops as the spice of beer, and designed the spicing to work with the malt profile the way hoppy flavors would -- balanced and complementary. The result is reminiscent of pumpkin pie, but of course better because it’s beer. The Imperial Pumpkin is first in a new line we’re calling the Brush and Barrel series. The product combines the sweat-earned fruit of our labor in the brewery with the work of a great Vermont artist, commissioned to create the label. While the Pumpkin Ale is a wonderful product made to enjoy during the fall season, we intend the Imperial Pumpkin to be something more like art: worthy of holding on to. Big and bold, this product combines the elements of the classic pumpkin ale recipe in a much more intense and memorable fashion. Where you might bring a 6 pack of pumpkin ale to a dinner party, the Imperial Pumpkin is designed to be really special, to share a bottle among friends say with the final course of a holiday meal.
If you could drink a beer with anyone, anywhere in the world who and where would it be ?
What a question! I’d have to say Michael Lewis, my brewing professor from UC Davis, and it would be out on the deck here in our Brewpub. There’s no better place to drink beer than sitting under the hop vines watching the river go endlessly by, and Michael is world-class drinking company.

HOW TO CELLAR BEER Unlike wine, which usually increases its quality perception with age, beer is commonly viewed as a product with a relatively short shelf life. Although many beer styles are meant to be consumed young, it is possible to cellar some styles for several years to enhance or mellow out certain characteristics. A few best-practices should be followed when it comes to cellaring beers: Beers to cellar The best beers to cellar have a high maltiness, large ABV (above 8%), and low level of hops. Additionally, beers that have been bottle conditioned, aged in wood, or labeled “vintage” or “vertical” also signal a beer that has potential to age well. Here is a short list of beer styles that can change favorably with cellaring: Abbey Ales, Baltic Porter, Barleywine, Belgian Golden Strong, Belgian Tripel, Russian Imperial Stout, and Scotch Ale. Proper conditions So you picked out the beer(s) you wish to cellar, now you need to find a suitable cellaring spot. The best cellaring spots are consistently cool (50-55°F) areas that are absent of light. Heat and variable temperatures St. Stefanus Grand do not contribute well to cellaring and light reacts with the alpha acids in a beer which can cause off-flavors Cru, an Abbey Ale and aromas. A dark room in a cool basement is usually the best bet for home cellaring. A refrigerator can with a strong malt work (especially for more hoppy beers), but can dramatically increase overall time and decrease flavor backbone and 8.5% changes. ABV, is a prime example of a beer Length of time that will cellar well. When it comes to cellaring time, the best advice is to experiment. Make sure to buy multiple bottles of a beer and try opening them in 3-6 month increments. Properly label each bottle with a cellaring date, keep tasting notes, and when you think the flavor has peaked, return the beer to a fridge to slow flavor change.
GUINNESS: BEHIND THE BEER Loyal Guinness drinkers know a great Guinness is all about the perfect pour. In fact, 80% of loyal Guinness drinkers will actually reject a pint not served using the signature two-part pour. A single shot pour will lead to a thin head, and/or an overflowing glass of beer, resulting in wasted beer and a less than satisfied Guinness drinker. Below, we show the steps necessary to achieve a proper Guinness two-part pour and share a little of the rich history behind this black elixir. -Begin the pour by holding the glass at a 45° angle -Pour 3/4 full, to the middle of the harp on a Guinness branded glass -Fill the remaining 1/4 with the glass in an upright position -The perfect pour from start to finish should take 119.5 seconds

Arthur Guinness
Arthur Guinness started brewing ales in 1759. He inherited £100 and signed a 9,000 year lease for an unused brewery in Dublin. Dublin was already a saturated beer market with over 200 breweries, but Arthur’s energy and self-belief lead him to success. Arthur first released his signature stout in 1778, which was an immediate success in Ireland and England. Today, Guinness is available in over 100 countries and over 1.8 billion pints are consumed each year. NEW CRAFT BEERS Four new craft beers have recently been introduced to New Jersey: Big Eddy Über Oktoberfest, Leinenkugel’s Orange Shandy, Anchor Steam BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red, Evil Genius Trick or Treat and Leinenkugel’s Hoppin’ Helles
BIG EDDY ÜBER OKTOBERFEST With a tawny orange hue and a heavy hand of toasted malts and spicy hops, Big Eddy Über-Oktoberfest is dry-hopped for added hop complexity for a bolder take on a traditional Oktoberfest style. It is medium bodied with a calm, even release of CO2. Starts off silky and finishes dry and warm in the swallow. ABV 8.5% IBU 35
LEINENKUGEL’S ORANGE SHANDY This year, Leinenkugel released Orange Shandy, which has proved to be a great addition to the Shandy lineup. Every sip of Orange Shandy is crisp and refreshing. The mandarin orange zest favor is tangy and puckering, but not harsh. You will also taste a hint of cardamom, white pepper and sweet toasted wheat. ABV 4.2% IBU 11
ANCHOR STEAM BIGLEAF MAPLE AUTUMN RED BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red is a well-balanced red ale with character. Its malty complexity and coppery color come from a combination of two caramel malts, a pale malt and a hint of maple syrup. To complement these flavors, Anchor Brewing used three additions of Nelson Sauvin hops in the brewkettle and a unique blend of Nelson Sauvin, Citra and Cascade for dry hopping. The result is a distinctive fall seasonal brew with extraordinary depth and intriguing aroma. ABV 6% IBU 38
EVIL GENIUS TRICK OR TREAT Trick or Treat is a Chocolate Pumpkin Porter made with homemade chocolate syrup. There are no spices added, dark malt aromas with a hint of pumpkin drift from each glass, which the chocolate flavor mingles with the roasted malt and pumpkin. The brewery mixes their cocoa with sugar and water, then lets the homemade chocolate syrup infuse into the beer over several days. ABV 5.6% IBU
LEINENKUGEL’S HOPPIN’ HELLES
Beer drinkers have been enjoying Helles-style lagers since 1895, but Leinenkugel’s version of this style offers a refreshing new spin and a little American ingenuity to an old German recipe. This is done by using five different American hops for a bright, citrusy and full-flavored lager. The grapefruit and orange notes from the aroma carryover and join peppery hop spice flavors. A sweet toast grain and bready quality is met with a clean bitterness. This medium bodied lager, begins creamy and slightly mouth-filling turns to a pleasant dryness in the sallow, finishing with a crisp bitterness and a subtle lingering citrus and spicy hop quality.
