IT IS TIME TO “HOP” INTO SUMMER BEERS Here comes summer! Clearly, Punsxtawney Phil cannot be trusted. An abnormally cold spring may have overshadowed consumers’ beer demand, but now is the time to enjoy the sunny weather and some great beers. Now that consumers are starting to transition to thirst-quenching, easy-to-drink beverages, we outline a few of the most trendy and traditional summer beer styles that will help satisfy this demand: Kölsch-style, Belgian Witbier, and Shandy.

KÖLSCH-STYLE

BELGIAN WITBIER

Kölsch beer is a unique, light bodied hybrid between an ale and a lager. They are fermented at a cool ale temperature (5965*F) and then lagered for at least a month. Classically brewed with German noble hops (Hallertau, Tettnang, Spalt, Saaz, or Hersbrucker), American Kölsch-style beers commonly use other European and American hops ending in the range of 20-30 IBU. This hybrid process results in a clean, crisp, balanced beer.

With bitterness ranging from 10-20 IBUs, a typical Belgian Witbier will have an unmistakable, hazy light gold color and complex, citrusy-orange, and white pepper aroma that makes it appeal to all the senses. First brewed over 400 years ago, Belgian Witbiers went out of style in the 1950s but was repopularized by Pierre Celis at Hoegaarden. The refreshing elegance of the Belgian Witbier-style solidifies its place as a refreshing summer beer.

Canoe Paddler

Long Trail Belgian White

Canoe Paddler is crisp and clean like a traditional Kolsch-style beer. The brewmasters add just enough rye for a subtle malt flavor up front that finishes dry.

Modeled after the original Belgian Witbiers, Long Trail’s Belgian White offers the traditional citrus and spice notes with a fluffy foam cap and finishes clean and crisp.

SHANDY A Shandy is a refreshing combination of beer and lemonade or a citrus/ginger-flavored, carbonated drink (Sprite or ginger beer). Although the exact history of the Shandy is debated, the most popular origination story of the Shandy (known as a “Radler” in Germany, which translates to “Cyclist”) is from the early 1900s. Legend has it that a large German cycling event took place, and all the cyclists went to one bar afterwards to drink. The bar owner panicked that he would run out of beer so he cut the beer with lemonade. The resulting beverage was a huge success, and this drink has spread throughout Europe and many parts of the world with many different names and renditions.

Summer Shandy Summer Shandy is brewed with the finest wheat and malted barley. The brewmasters then mix in refreshing lemonade creating a taste that’s perfect for the sun-splashed summer months.

Lemonberry Shandy Each batch begins with a light, crisp, wheat beer. Blackberry juice and lemonade are blended in to create a distinct rhubarb-colored appearance and a tart, refreshing flavor.

THIS PAIRING WORKS : Cilantro, garlic, and olive oil marinated shrimp is a perfect summer pairing with an American wheat beer. The delicate, clean wheat flavors of Anchor Steam Summer, which finishes crisp, stands up to but does not over power the succulent flavor of the marinated shrimp.

THIS PAIRING WORKS : Third Shift, being a Marzenstyle lager, has a bold yet sessionable flavor of amber malts that is balanced by a light amount of hops. The amber malts stand up to the sweetness of the barbeque sauce on the ribs while the crisp finish helps cleanse the richness.

THIS PAIRING WORKS : An arugula and sliced apple salad tossed lightly with an apple cider vinaigrette pairs refreshingly with Redd’s Apple Ale. The natural apple flavors in Redd’s harmoniously compliments the apple cider vinaigrette and tart apple slices in the salad.

THIS PAIRING WORKS : It is not hard to see why raspberry sorbet with a sip of Summer Shandy go perfectly together. The flavorful synergies produced from the tart and sweet profiles of both the Shandy and sorbet far outweigh the individual parts. Feeling adventurous? Try making it a Summer Shandy sorbet float!

BEER MIXOLOGY The newest generation of alcohol consumers have much more curious palates than the beverage industry has seen in the past, which has led to the uprising of craft beers, flavored malt beverages, flavored liquors, and ciders. Although we have more variety than ever to choose from, consumers are still not satisfied. Bars are now creating beer mixology menus and allowing consumers to mix beers, ciders, and liquor in search of a beverage that is truly unique and delicious. Below we list some of our favorite beer mixology combinations:

SUMMER THIRST QUENCHERS: “Snakebite”

“Honey Bear”

“Velvet Hammer”

“Brown Adder”

GUINNESS MIXES: Guinness Irish Stout is a classic beer for mixing with other beers because of its unique flavor profile and smooth, creamy head. The velvety, smooth texture of Guinness combines effortlessly with a vast amount of beer flavors, which allows Guinness to perfectly float on top of the base beer. Don’t forget to use a layering spoon!

“Half & Half ”

“Cow Tipper”

“Crispin Velvet”

“Irish Hiker”

BEER COCKTAILS: We have all heard of sake bombs and cinnamon whiskey with cider; therefore, we have made the effort to research some more unique, delicious beer cocktails. The great thing about beer cocktails is that you can tailor them for any occasion.

TRAPPIST VS ABBEY ALES What are Trappist and Abbey ales? What are the differences between the two?

St. Stefanus, an Abbey Ale, has a history dating back to 1295 and is still fermented using the original Jermanus ale yeast.

Monasteries of various religious orders have brewed beer throughout Europe since the Middle Ages. Monks brewed beer for sustenance and money for their Abbey’s upkeep and charitable causes. The definition of a Trappist beer has evolved over time to ensure a standard quality level and to protect the name. The most easily understood definition of a Trappist beer is a beer that is produced from one of 8 au-

THE

thentic Trappist breweries— two of the most common being Chimay and Westmalle. These 8 Trappist breweries must be run and/or supervised by monks and operate as a not for profit venture.

duced in equal quality and style (think Delirium Tremens), but Trappist beers do have more specific rules and regulations that help to standardize the Trappist designation and overall quality.

Abbey Ales have a much more broad definition that ranges from a beer brewed at a nonTrappist monastery (Cistercian, Benedictine, etc.) to a beer brewed by a commercial company in the monastic-style. Does this mean that Trappist beers are always a higher quality than Abbey Ales? No, Abbey Ales can also be pro-

Popular styles within the Trappist and Abbey Ale jurisdiction include the following: Blonde/Enkel, Dubbel, and Tripel. All these styles have a complex maltiness with the Blonde/Enkel having the lightest expression and the Tripel having the strongest expression with an ABV of 8-10%.

IMPORTANCE OF

GLASSWARE

Glassware is an important and commonly debated topic when it comes to beer. We believe that proper glassware is an intrinsic part of getting the full experience when enjoying beer. Below we list how glassware can improve the sensory experience, the most common glassware, and the styles that are recommended for each.

Proper Glassware Improves the Sensory Experience 

Improves the visual aesthetics of the beer: color, clarity, carbonation, and foam presence.

Improves the amount of aromatics given off by the beer: 90% of what beer tastes like comes from the aroma.

Impacts the flavor and consumption:  

Proper glassware will help create foam that will release volatiles that impact smell and taste. Clean, proper glassware releases carbonation reducing the feeling of being full, and thus allowing consumers to enjoy the beer as the brewmasters intended.

Popular Beer Glassware The “Snifter”

 Belgian Strong Ales  Imperial Stouts  Scotch Ale/ Barleywine

The “Tulip Pint”

 Multi-Purpose  American IPAs  Most Ales

The “Pilsner”

 Most Lagers

The “Mug/Stein”

The “Weizen”

NEW CRAFT BEERS Three new craft beers have recently been introduced to New Jersey: Big Eddy’s Ryewine Ale, Otter Creek’s Vermont Lager, and Früli Strawberry Beer

BIG EDDY RYEWINE ALE Inspired by our German ancestors, Big Eddy Ryewine Ale combines old world ingredients with the character of to-

day’s American barleywines. Rare and robust (ABV 10%), this one-of-a -kind brew pairs seamlessly with strong cheeses

and wild fare entrees. This beer is available in limited quantity and draft only. Get it while it lasts!

Flavor Profile: A blend of multiple rye notes awaken a spicy complexity while a puzzle of stone fruits, toffee, caramel, and molasses flavors create the intense depth of this unique brew.

OTTER CREEK VERMONT LAGER Vermont Lager is targeted directly at the craft brew audience. It is not your typical lager because it includes a lot of Pilsen malt and Noble

hops, and it is dry hopped as well. The Vermont Lager has a big hop aroma and is a real head-turner. At the 2009 Great American Beer

festival in Denver, Colorado Otter Creek Brewing was awarded a gold medal for the Vermont Lager. This beer is available in 6pk bottles only.

Flavor Profile: Honoring the European-style tradition, Vermont Lager features imported German Pilsen malt, Halltertau and Tettnang hops. These fine ingredients produce a big hop aroma (45 IBUs) and a crisp ,refreshing taste that is perfect for the summer.

FRÜLI STRAWBERRY BEER Früli is a delicious fruit beer imported from Belgium that is a mix of Belgian Wheat Beer (70%) and strawberry juice (30%). Früli has won multiple prestigious beer

awards: gold at the International Beer Competition in 2004 and the “World’s Best Fruit Beer” at the 2009 World Beer Awards. Früli is brewed at the Brouwerij Huyghe,

which was founded in 1906 and is most well known for its beer Delirium Tremens—a Belgianstyle tripel. Früli is currently available in draft only in New Jersey.

Flavor Profile: The blend of wheat beer and strawberry juice lends Früli an intense flavor of ripe strawberries that finishes with notes of vanilla and a distinct sweetness Früli is known for. Früli boasts a 4.7% ABV.
