Lynching site photo courtesy of Andrea Morales
Aftershocks A new temporary exhibit at the Pink Palace documents a violent and sad incident in the history of Shelby County. In association with the Lynching Sites Projects of Memphis, we are displaying an exhibit documenting the Murder of Antoinette Rappel, the lynching of Ell Persons and the events that followed. The morning of April 30, 1917, 16-year-old Antoinette Rappel left her home to ride her bicycle across the Wolf River Bridge to meet the Treadwell school cart. She never arrived. A search party found Antoinette's bicycle near the Wolf River bridge. Following a fresh trail, they discovered Antoinette’s decapitated body, her clothes torn and body scratched. The Shelby County Sheriff arrested Ell Persons, an African American woodcutter, who lived nearby. The nature of the crime and sensational newspaper accounts had some in the community calling for a lynching. An organized crowd took Persons from deputies. The Commercial Appeal ran a headline proclaiming that a lynching was to occur at the scene of the crime. May 22, 1917, a crowd of several thousand waited at the Wolf River bridge. Vendors sold soft drinks and snacks. The crowd watched as Persons was burned to death. Later that afternoon the occupants of a car threw Person’s head into a crowd of African American men on Beale Street. Responding to these events, Robert Church, Jr., a prominent black Memphis businessman, contacted James Weldon Johnson, the Field Secretary of the NAACP. Johnson and Church laid out the charter for a Memphis chapter of the NAACP that quickly became the largest branch in the South. Most Memphians are unfamiliar with the story of Antoinette Rappel’s murder and Ell Persons’ lynching. However, the repercussions of these events do not vanish because no one speaks about them. No person or groups have ever been held accountable or tried for either crime. The relatives of Antoinette Rappel loaned her bicycle basket, with her books and homework, to the Pink Palace Museum for this moving exhibit. May 21, 2017, descendants of both Ell Persons and Antoinette Rappel joined a group of several hundred at the scene of these crimes for an interfaith memorial. 4

CONNECTING WITH OUR PAST
ACTIVITIES FIND THE SHRUNKEN HEAD!
The Shrunken Head has escaped and is hiding in the Museum Scope! Our staff detectives have determined that he's hiding somewhere on pages 2–9. Help us find him for your chance to win two passes to the CTI 3D Giant Theater! Send us his location along with: Your Name: Your Address (including zip): Page #: Location on Page: In the years before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Memphis’ African American freedom movement was mostly led by LeMoyne and Owen College students. April 15, 1960, five students defied the Pink Palace’s segregation policy. At the time, Memphis’ public cultural institutions only allowed African Americans to visit on a designated “Colored Day.” LeMoyne College students Allen Stiles (pictured above), Robert Cox, Ernice Taylor, Barbara Stazes and Ernestine Hill visited the museum. When they ignored requests to leave, police were called and the students were taken to jail and charged with: disturbing the peace, threatened breach of peace, disorderly conduct and loitering. Mr. Stiles and his fellow students caused such a disturbance the City was forced to reexamine its segregated institutions. By 1963, federal courts ordered Memphis’ public elementary schools, movie theaters, restaurants, buses, trains, recreation facilities, libraries and museums to end segregation. Allen Stiles (LeMoyne College 1957-1961) visited the Pink Palace again May 1, 2017, this time to view our new LeMoyne-Owen College exhibit. During research for the LeMoyne-Owen exhibit, Collections Developer Jestein Gibson discovered the 1960 arrest records. Mr. Stiles had not seen them since his arrest in 1960. Ms. Gibson presented him with a copy of his history-making past (pictured below).
