CTI 3D GIANT THEATER
© BBC Worldwide Wild Africa 3D Opens January 7, 2017 Take a spectacular journey across, over, and through the magical realms of the wildest continent on earth. Water, the interconnecting force of this enchanted kingdom, serves as a guide, shaping wild Africa and conjuring up life wherever it journeys… travelling above the plains on seasonal winds, cascading along raging rivers or sheltering coral cities. It’s an adventure where you will truly believe the real world is more extraordinary and awe-inspiring than any fiction. Follow the lives of Africa's extraordinary wildlife, including a family of mountain gorillas in the forests of Rwanda and hundreds of thousand of flamingos performing an extraordinary mating display in the volcanic Lake Bogoria. Fly inside erupting volcanoes and along the Great Rift Valley and follow the twisting rivers to discover a family of elephants on their epic search for water.
1
Hang out with hungry crocodiles in the savannahs of the Serengeti, waiting at the water holes for the annual wildebeest migration. Marvel at crafty creatures such as the snakes and lizards that find water in their food. Dive into the richest of underwater habitats: the coral reefs of the Red Sea. The extraordinary diversity of species here makes this the marine equivalent of the rainforest. And finally, witness the sheer power of the elements in the Busanga Plains of Zambia as the monsoon brings rain and unbridled joy to the lions, zebra and gazelle – all the creatures of the African plains gambol in the gift of water.
Wild Africa Fun Facts: • The Shovel Snouted Lizard (Zeros anchietae) has devised a wonderful dance of alternating feet on the hot sand to enable it to survive in the scorching alien sands of the desolate Namib desert. If it didn't dance, the hot sand would burn its feet! • The Peringuey's adder (Bitis peringueyi), native to the Namib Desert, is an ambush hunter. It buries itself just beneath the surface of the sand with only its eyes and the tip of its tail exposed. When prey happens by, it is seized and envenomated. • The Red Sea Reef in Egypt is considered one of the seven natural wonders of Africa. It gets its name from the trichodesmium erythraeum algae that call the sea their home. The algae turn blue-green waters reddish-brown. It is also the saltiest sea on the planet! • Africa’s iconic Acacia tree can ‘whistle!’ The thorns on its branches, formed by ants, make a whistling sound when wind blows over the ants’ access points. • The Nyiragongo Volcano, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the world’s largest and most violent lava lake. It has erupted 34 times since 1882! See Wild Africa in 2D Mondays - Fridays at 4pm Saturdays at 9:45am E xp l o r e

The CTI 3D Giant Theater is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. At present, we have a total of 27 assistive listening devices. Nine of these devices (Captiview) provide closed captions. We also have 18 devices that enhance the volume for those visitors with hearing issues and those devices are also designed to provide a descriptive narrative of on screen actions on an additional audio channel. At the present, not all of the documentary movies we have shown in the theater have been digitally encoded by the documentary movie distributor with the necessary codes for the Captiview closed caption device and the DoReMi descriptive narrative capabilities. We have been informed that in the near future more documentary movies are being encoded with closed caption viewer Captiview and the DoReMi descriptive narrative features. The theater provides hearing impaired customers with a copy of the movie’s script with a red flashlight, for low light level reading. Customers in need of these devices should call our reservations number, (901)636-2362, so that we can make appropriate accommodations to serve their needs.

PINK PALACE BLOG
FRIENDS OF THE PINK PALACE
Pink Palace Mansion 3.0 Plans are moving ahead for our renovation of the Pink Palace mansion. In November, the Collections and Exhibits departments took all of the artifacts out of the mansion exhibits. Each artifact removed from display was condition reported, which means that staff made notes of all damage and imperfections, and rehoused in storage. A few artifacts were put in new temporary homes throughout the museum. You can visit the shrunken head in the museum lobby, and the polar bear is in the bones exhibit on the first floor of the museum. Moving the polar bear was one of the more difficult feats! In 2017, construction begins in the mansion. The country store, Piggly Wiggly and circus exhibits will be moving into the mansion. There will also be new exhibits about the Cossitt Museum, which was Memphis’ first museum, Clarence Saunders, the history of the museum, and the Burton Callicott murals. Visitors will be able to walk up the grand staircase in the lobby, and there will be a new elevator with access to the second floor exhibits. Some staff offices will also be moving to the second floor, and there will be new rooms to support special events. Construction will take an estimated eighteen months.

EXHIBITS
Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss Janaury 21 - May 7, 2017 THE EXPERIENCE Discover the mysteries of the ocean's greatest depths in this new, interactive deep-sea exhibit. Newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, closeup views of deep-sea research submersibles, and shipwrecks, including the Titanic, are among the attractions. Geologic forces deep within the earth drive the great crustal plates of our planet, building sea floors with hydrothermal vents, displaying the magnificent engineering feats of Mother Nature. EXTREME DEEP, designed for ages 6 and older, introduces us to the critical role that biology, chemistry, geology, history, exploration and technology play in understanding our world and its future. INTERACTIVES Alvin Personnel Sphere Interactive: Approach a recreation of the interior of an Alvin sphere to prepare for a dive, then complete a checklist of tasks to prepare the submersible to "dive."
13
Robot Arm Interactive: Watch through a 4-inch viewport window--just like Alvin's window--and attempt to operate Alvin's robotic arm. Alvin Arm Artifact: It's the real thing! Touch and manipulate the claw of a real Alvin arm. This is the essential tool on Alvin used by scientists to collect biologic and geologic specimens for examination from the ocean floor. Types of Vehicles: Using colorful puzzle pieces, visitors can build a high-tech submersible, then let the pieces fall and try again.
Vent Sites Video: "Swim with the fishes" (almost) by viewing astonishing video footage of three different vent sites, (1) 9o North off of the coast of Mexico, (2) Juan de Fuca Ridge off of the coast of Washington state, and (3) the Mid Atlantic Ridge, smack dab in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
ROV Pilot: Explore the wreck of the Titanic as the ROV pilot. Manipulate this ROV and work with another guest to spot and identify surface details on the deck of the sunken vessel.
Biological/Geological Specimens: Examine deepsea life--biologic and geologic specimens. Five-foot tube worms, see-through crabs, and other fragile-yet-tough creatures thrive more than three miles below the ocean's surface. These other-worldly creatures live on a diet of hydrogen sulfide and bacteria, nestled snuggly around volcanic vents in near freezing water.
Locally sponsored by:
EXTREME DEEP: Mission to the Abyss presented by Evergreen Exhibitions in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, EXTREME DEEP is an interactive exhibit that highlights the adventure of deep-sea exploration and discovery.
