DIRECTOR'S DISPATCH “And I will purge thy mortal grossness so…” – Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream
One of my clearest and happiest memories from childhood is the grade school song about “greasy, grimy gopher guts.” Call it the “ick” factor. Ick is interesting. And ick is what Animal Grossology has. This traveling exhibit is guaranteed to captivate. Investigate slug slime, check out methane exuding moo-ers, and become a doo-doo detective, all through sophisticated animatronics and imaginative animated characters adapted from the best-selling Grossology book series by author and science teacher Sylvia Branzei. It’s all a matter of scale and when you’re examining a five-foot long housefly in Animal Grossology, things look different. They also look different in our new 3D movie, Hidden Universe. This amazing adventure allows you to look deep into the universe to explore the earliest galaxies and nebulae, and watch stars being born in vivid clouds of dust and gas. There are many fun learning opportunities on tap at the Pink Palace Family of Museums including our second Science of Beer. It was wonderful fun last year and I hope you’ll be there this year. By the way, I can still sing that grade school song, but I promise I won’t.

SHARPE PLANETARIUM What's Happening at the Sharpe Planetarium? The planetarium theater is looking a bit bare these days, empty of slide and special effects projectors used over the last 36 years of analog operation. Even our 36 year-old Minolta MS15 projector has had some “modifications” in order to retain a major part for later display. Thank you to Roy Foppiano, George Henderson, Jason Lineberger, CB Jolley and Corie Walker for their assistance. Now, the inner walls, seats and carpet have been removed, opening the space as never before. This prepares the room for a whole new look. The projection dome will be cleaned and painted by professionals, optimizing it for the sharpest digital images possible. New projector, new seats and a new sound system will round out the renovations. We are excited, watching the changes happening every day. The new projector will give us the planetarium’s most accurate star field ever. It will include millions of separate known objects in the galaxy and the universe beyond. With the new digital database, we will be able to simulate leaving earth’s surface for the first time ever and going where no Memphian has gone before. We hope you are as excited about it as we are. We're looking forward to opening day!
Wonders of the Universe Now through Spring 2015 During the construction period, we are offering a “window” onto the universe with a flat-screen program called Wonders of the Universe in the Mansion Theater and sometimes in the Discovery Theater. In one section we go Seasonal Stargazing with a guided tour through some highlights in our fall and winter skies. Next we use a digital program to explore the current events and planet positions to keep you up to date with the stars of winter, as well as give you a hint of what is to come in the new Sharpe Planetarium.
Show times: 9:45, 11:00, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, and 4:00.

CTI 3D GIANT THEATER Hidden Universe 3D Opens January 10, 2015 This giant-screen documentary adventure takes you on an extraordinary 3D journey deep into space like no other. The deepest reaches of our universe are brought to life with unprecedented clarity through real images captured by the world’s most powerful telescopes—seen on-screen and in 3D for the first time. Explore the earliest galaxies, watch stars being born in vivid clouds of gas and dust, tour the surface of Mars, and witness images of distant celestial structures including stunning views of the Sun. These dramatic new images offer fresh insight into the origins and evolution of the universe. Fascinating Telescope Facts: • The Residencia, which houses these telescopes at the Paranal astronomical observatory in Chile, served as a backdrop for part of the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace. • The Paranal’s VLT (Very Large Telescope) discovered the first ever image of a planet outside our Solar System (an extrasolar planet). • The VLT tracked individual stars moving around the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. • It observed the afterglow of the furthest known Gamma-Ray Burst. • ALMA, the other telescope at Paranal Observatory, has vision ten times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. • In 2012 ALMA found, for the first time, sugar molecules in the gas surrounding a young star. Though it’s not the same kind of sugar used in coffee, this molecule is one of the ingredients of RNA, one of the building blocks of life. • ALMA is a revolutionary design composed of 66 high-precision antennas that work together as a single telescope. Each antenna collects radiation coming from space and focuses it onto a receiver, which then sends the radiation for processing by a specialized supercomputer called the ALMA correlator.

EXHIBITS
January 24 - April 19, 2015

Take a slightly different view of Fluffy, Fido and the rest of the Animal Kingdom. Experience some of the stinkiest, slimiest and downright yuckiest creatures on earth. Learn why the dung beetle is considered nature’s original pooper-scooper! Why cows chew cud and why snail and slug slime might provide scientists with more insight into treating cystic fibrosis. Based on the second book in the Grossology series by author Sylvia Branzei, Animal Grossology, has been brought to life at the Pink Palace! Animal Grossology follows in the footsteps of the highly acclaimed Grossology, (the impolite science of the human body), exhibition and continues to delight visitors with its unique and engrossing edutainment. By the way, do you know what honey really is? How about some bee barf with your biscuit ... it's true! Arranged into five icky and yucky categories, take a scientific look at nature's blood sucking, vomit munching, slime making and dookie loving creatures. Yep, it's gross, but behind each category is sound science and healthy actions that emphasize how fun learning can be!
5
Dookie Dookie comes in all shapes, sizes and textures. These different varieties provide scientists with useful answers to many of our animal mysteries. Some animals depend on poo for their survival. Find out why a Scarab Beetle is actually very important to the environment in preventing the spread of disease from rotting piles of dung. Increase your vocabulary by matching the scientific dookie name to the correct animal. Slime Makers Slime is essential to some animals, providing important functions such as facilitating motion, aiding in digestion and acting as a defense mechanism. These slippery characters will vie for the title “King of Slime.” Oceans, rivers and lakes are home to many slimy, unique animals. Explore a plethora of strange underwater creatures and their unique characteristics. Blood Slurpers Blood is very nutritious and many animals slurp blood for their meals. Like peanut butter, blood contains lots of protein, which is important for a healthy diet. Some blood contains tiny amounts of metals or salt water giving it different colors. Clues allow you to guess what color blood belongs to what animal. Blood slurpers sometimes transmit infectious diseases while others can actually assist patients after surgery. Identify those that can be a health hazard while finding precautions that may help keep you safe from Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Vomit Munchers What has four stomachs and produces 200 liters of saliva daily? A Ruminant, which produces methane gas for lots of belching and tooting. Some animals have to barf to eat: others have to spew after they eat. Discover how regurgitation is crucial for the survival of some animals. Other Gross Stuff Meet some not so familiar animals, including one that actually lives in an intestine. Explore how animals use scent and smells for recognition, attraction and defense. Finally, take our trivia challenge on all of the subject matter in the exhibition. GROSSOLOGY Exhibitions created and produced by Advanced Exhibits, a division of Advanced Animations LLC. Mallory-Neely Has How Many Windows? The Mallory-Neely House has 91 windows! Now they are all getting some much-needed TLC. Deterioration is an inevitable consequence of time. At the age of 163, the Mallory-Neely House is no exception. The City of Memphis has funded two very important Capital Improvement Projects for the care and longevity of the Mallory-Neely House. Dating from 1852 the house with attached servant’s quarters has a great many types and sizes of windows. The most resplendent are the huge arched windows across the front of the house, which extend to the floor, allowing porch access and cool breezes. These arched windows are characteristic of the Italianate architectural style of the house and can be found both single and paired. A historic building calls for a special approach to deteriorated windows. Repair versus replacement is the guiding philosophy. This retains the historic authenticity and the quality of the wood old growth forest hardwood – can’t be beat. By the time summer arrives, the house will be sporting repaired, restored and repainted windows. The Mallory-Neely House is open throughout the duration of the project. To learn more, check in on our window repair project blog at www.memphismuseums.org. You’ll get to see behind the scenes, the nuts and bolts of the work, many photos, and map the progress as well.
