I’ll admit I can’t be objective about the Pink Palace Family of Museums. Nonetheless, I think we are offering the largest and best array of programs in our history. The exhibit, RACE: Are We So Different?, will open eyes and provoke thought. The things added by our talented staff make it a truly world-class experience. See page 3 for the full menu of exhibits, programs and activities. It’s no secret that movies on film are going the way of the dinosaur and being replaced by digital. We’re keeping up with that change and going a step further by adding digital 3D capacity to our CTI 3D Giant Theater. March 8, we will inaugurate
the new equipment by bringing you Flight of the Butterflies in 3D. I have seen this movie and it is an inspiring and informative film that truly makes good use of 3D. After the winter we had, it will do your soul good to go to Lichterman Nature Center in April for our annual Plant Sale. I am known for having a brown thumb, but even I can find native plants at Lichterman that thrive and beautify my garden. Right next to the escalator in the Museum lobby, you can now see schematic drawings and a model of our plans for reinventing our entire Museum. Please look at them when you come. I hope you will be as excited as I am, and please know that I would be very happy to meet with you and tell you all about the plans.

EXHIBIT COMPONENTS I Am An Icon Featuring an original “I Am A Man” placard carried by the striking Memphis Sanitation Workers in 1968. The association of the phrase “I Am A Man” with the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King has made it an iconic symbol throughout the world.
FEBRUARY 1 – May 4 It's a simple truth. People are different. Throughout history, these differences have been a source of community strength and personal identity. They have also been the basis for discrimination and oppression. RACE: Are We So Different?, developed by the American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, is the first national exhibition to tell the stories of race from the biological, cultural, and historical points of view. Combining these perspectives offers an unprecedented look at race and racism in the United States.
In Our Own Backyard Learn the sad but inspiring story of the segregated history of the Pink Palace Museum and the students who staged a nonviolent action, ultimately leading to the opening of our Museum equally to all visitors. RACE Discovery Days Interactive experiences for visitors to learn the history of race, the role of science in that history, and the subtle and obtrusive expressions of race and racism in institutions and daily lives. 9am-12noon, every
Thursday and Friday through May 2. Diversity Dialogues Facilitated discussions about RACE led by Common Ground, allowing audiences to participate and reflect on their experiences in learning about and experiencing race as a factor in their lives and community. (group reservations required) Spanish Panels Five translated panels explaining scientific, historic, medical and cultural perspectives on race. Locker Project School lockers decorated by students, community groups and families, representing their views on race and what it means to them.

Historic marker dedication
February 1, 1968, sanitation workers Echol Cole and Robert Walker took shelter from the rain inside their truck's garbage barrel because they had no raincoats. At the corner of Colonial and Verne, the compacting motor shorted, and the two men were crushed to death. This, along with the fact that 22 black sewer workers were sent home that day without pay (while their white supervisors were retained for the day with pay), sparked the sanitation strike in Memphis February 12, and ultimately led to civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. visiting the city to give 3 speeches in support of the strikers and their cause. The dedication, Saturday, February 1, 2014, in recognition of the tragic accident included Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Jr., Executive Director of AFSCME, Gail Tyree, and the Director of Museums, Steve Pike, as well as family members of the two workers, and three of the original strikers.

FAREWELL TO OUR FRIEND, ROY YOUNG After almost forty years with the Pink Palace Museum, Roy Young will retire April 14, 2014. Roy started work at the museum November 10, 1975. Roy’s title is Conservator, but he has taken on many other roles as well, teaching paleontology and archaeology field schools, preparing fossils for exhibit, creating dioramas, making mounts for artifacts, and serving as our resident expert on geology and paleontology. Roy has befriended, inspired and infuriated a generation of staff members, volunteers and students. He has also made us laugh. A lot. "We all joke, but it's hard to imagine the Pink Palace without Roy. We will miss him." – Manager of Collections, Louella Weaver "We were pretty broke. I had enough to buy a package of peanut butter crackers. I knew he was hungry and offered him half. He declined. I put the package on the table in front of him and insisted. He picked them up and crushed them in his hand saying "I said I didn't want your ••• crackers."" – Former Manager of Collections, Ron Brister
A young Conservator Roy Young (right) and former Manager of Collections, Ron Brister (left).
"Roy Young is the kind of person who knowingly lets you walk around work all day long with your zipper down but will give you a beautiful geode when a family member dies." – Registrar, Tammy Braithwaite "Who is this Roy Young?" – Manager of Exhibits, Steve Masler

An article from “The American Scientist” Magazine: The 95% Solution states that average Americans spend less than 5% of their lives in classrooms. So what inspires learning the other 95% of the time? We do! Last year our Pink Palace Family provided: ➢ • More than 171,000 Student experiences ➢ • Free Admission for more than 75,000 Title-1 Student experiences to Exhibits, Planetarium shows, Lichterman Nature Center, including instructor-led education programs plus ➢ • Free Suitcase Exhibits outreach program in the classrooms of more than 67,000 Students ➢ • Visitor experiences to more than 503,000 people The 95% Solution contends that we in the U.S. enjoy the advantage of having Informal Education, such as museums, digital resources, educational TV and radio, zoos, aquariums, national parks, 4-H and Scouting. Increased
investment in these resources would be very cost-effective according to this article. That’s the purpose of this appeal. We need for you to invest in the Pink Place Family of Museums so that we can continue to be part of “The 95% Solution”! We must do well before we can do good! Please help us do well.
