EXHIBITS TM

Open January 24 - April 19, 2015 Take a slightly different view of Fluffy, Fido and the rest of the Animal Kingdom. Experience some of the stinkiest, slimiest and downright yuckiest creatures on earth. Learn why the dung beetle is considered nature’s original pooper-scooper! Why cows chew cud and why snail and slug slime might provide scientists with more insight into treating cystic fibrosis. Categories: Dookie Find out why a Scarab Beetle is actually very important to the environment in preventing the spread of disease from rotting piles of dung. Increase your vocabulary by matching the scientific dookie name to the correct animal. Slime Makers Slime is essential to some animals, providing important functions such as facilitating motion, aiding in digestion and acting as a defense mechanism. Blood Slurpers Identify the animals that can be a health hazard while finding precautions that may help keep you safe from Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Vomit Munchers Some animals have to barf to eat: others have to spew after they eat. Discover how regurgitation is crucial for some animals. Other Gross Stuff Meet some not so familiar animals, including one that actually lives in an intestine. Explore how animals use scent and smells for recognition, attraction and defense. Finally, take our trivia challenge on all of the subject matter in the exhibition.

CTI 3D GIANT THEATER Humpback Whales Opens March 7, 2015 An extraordinary journey into the mysterious world of one of nature’s most awe-inspiring marine mammals, Humpback Whales takes you to Alaska, Hawaii and the Kingdom of Tonga for an immersive look at how these whales communicate, sing, feed, play and take care of their young. Join a team of researchers as they unlock the secrets of the humpback and find out what makes humpbacks the most acrobatic of all whales, why only the males sing, and why these intelligent 50-foot, 48-ton animals migrate more than 6,000 miles round-trip every year. Facinating Facts about Humpback Whales • Humpback whales are known for their magical songs, which travel for up to 20 miles through the world's oceans. These sequences of moans, howls, cries, and other noises are quite complex and often continue for hours on end. A typical song lasts from 10-20 minutes, is repeated continuously for hours at a time, and changes gradually from year to year. • Researchers still are not sure exactly how humpbacks produce their sounds. They don't have vocal cords, so they probably sing by circulating air through the tubes and chambers of their respiratory system--but no air escapes during the concerts and their mouths don't move. • Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appear to be gestures of affection. • At least 3 different species of barnacles are commonly found on both the flippers and the body of the humpback whale. It is also home for a species of whale lice, Cyamus boopis.

As the boy grows older, the wise panther Bagheera realizes he must be returned to his own kind in the nearby man-village. Bagheera realizes that Mowgli is in danger, particularly from Shere Khan the tiger who hates all humans. When Baloo finally comes around, Mowgli runs off into the jungle where he survives a second encounter with Kaa the snake and finally, with Shere Khan. Which path will Mowgli take? Rated "G." Ratatouille in 2D Showing Saturdays in April 2015 • 4pm A rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unlikely - and certainly unwanted - visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Remy's passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down. Rated "G." Also showing Good Friday, April 3, 4pm Visit www.memphismuseums.org for showtimes.

SHARPE PLANETARIUM What's Happening at the Sharpe Planetarium?

HISTORIC PROPERTIES Take your family on a historic tour!

The Sharpe Planetarium is under renovation, re-opening in June, 2015 with a 360 degree immersive surround experience, including: • An improved 150-seat theater •Full Dome digital technology - anything you can render on a computer screen can be shown in action on the planetarium dome • All-new state-of-the-art sound system

Wonders of the Universe Now through June 2015 During the construction period, we are offering a “window” onto the universe with a flat-screen program called Wonders of the Universe in the Mansion Theater and sometimes in the Discovery Theater. Show times: 9:45, 11:00, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, and 4:00.

Ask Dave! Many movies and TV series like Star Trek visit lots of worlds like Earth. What is the chance that we will find habitable worlds and other intelligent beings? The universe is unbelievably big and Science Fiction is a great way to imagine many different possible futures. But the fact remains that the only world that we know supports life (let alone intelligent life) is Earth. However, thanks to the short-lived Kepler mission (launched in 2009), we know there are lots of potentially habitable planets. Kepler is a space telescope designed to look for dips in a star’s brightness caused by a planet passing in between us and the star. The Kepler's pointing system failed in 2013, but that was still enough time to gather enough data to keep scientists busy analyzing for years. In fact, it's already lead to the discovery of more than 1,000 planets!

Mallory-Neely House 652 Adams Ave, Memphis, TN 38105 Open Fridays and Saturdays from 10am–4pm Last tour is at 3pm Visit us in March: 6–7 • 13–14 • 20–21 • 27–28 And April: 3–4 • 10–11 • 17–18 • 24–25 Free admission to Museum members!

One University of California, Berkley graduate student (Erik Petigura) even estimated that there could be as many as 40 billion habitable planets in our galaxy alone! That may be an optimistic number, but the odds have definitely improved, and many radio telescopes are now listening for the signals that could show that we are not alone. Do you have a question for Dave? Email it to museumscope@gmail.com, and be sure to put "Ask Dave" in the subject line!

Magevney House 198 Adams Ave, Memphis, TN 38103 Open the first Saturday of each month from 1–4pm. Visit us Saturday: March 7 and April 4 Free admission to the public! 6

Dive right in! Museum Store Employee Digging Egypt

Wearable whales!

Call me Ish-whale!

Any other time of the year, you would find Dustin Peasley working in the Pink Palace Museum Store. But this spring, Dustin is in Egypt, conducting archaeological research for his doctoral dissertation at the University of Memphis. Dustin started his adventure in Luxor, the archaeological haven of New Kingdom Egypt. Luxor is where the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple are located. There, Dustin worked in an ancient rock-cut tomb dating to the time of Ramesses II (1250 BCE). The tomb’s walls are painted with Egyptian funerary motifs and contain a tunnel suspected to lead to the burial shaft of the original tomb owners, the priest Panehsy and his wife Tarenu. Over 100 other mummies can be found there as well. An ancient economic crisis forced several generations of Egyptians to use the same tomb as a site for their dead. Dustin moves next to Hierakonpolis, the premier site for the study of the Predynastic period in ancient Egypt. This period (4400-3000 BC) is the major focus of his doctoral research, focusing on the remains of several hundred graves from a non-elite cemetery in order to identify family units and their influence on a future centralized Egyptian state that flourished for over 3,000 years. That’s a lot of history, but hey, we have history at the Pink Palace too! Dustin returns to Memphis at the end of March. Stop by the Pink Palace and give him a high f vi!

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Meet the “Jaws of the Cretaceous Period,” a 71-million-year-old killing machine, 25-feet of swimming menace – and the top of the food chain in his day. This Mosasaur skeleton is a specimen similar to the Pink Palace Mosasaur found among thousands of marine fossils in the ancient sea floor at Coon Creek. He’s a reptile, not a dinosaur, but while running from a T-Rex, you would not want to encounter this guy in the water.

Huge Plesiosaurs, marine crocodiles, sea turtles and Mosasaurs shared the waters with sharks and fierce, fanged-tooth fishes.

Did you know that millions of years ago, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky and Missouri were submerged beneath an embayment of what would become the Gulf of Mexico? The climate was warmer than today – semi-tropical, like current-day southern Florida. Coon Creek Science Center, located in rural McNairy County, Tennessee, and part of the Pink Palace Family of Museums since 1988, was formed in shallow coastal water probably less than 100 feet deep. The sea floor was heavily populated with shellfish, crabs and lobsters.

In addition, we invite you to support the Pink Palace Museum by sending a charitable gift today. We will use your gift to bring one or more children from local Title 1 schools to see it all for themselves.

At the Pink Palace Museum, this Mosasaur skeleton is surrounded by a Mastodon (cast), T-Rex and Dilophosaurus replicas, along with other fossilized bones and extinct critters. Come meet him in the Museum, where you’ll be safe from those razor-sharp teeth!

Your gift today ensures the past is introduced to the future!
