dispatch

For several years we have been planning how to make major improvements to our visitors’ experience. The plan is elegantly simple. The main points: Create a new entrance, oriented toward Central Avenue, but not competing with the view of the Pink Palace mansion; Improve visitor amenities; Update our exhibits and order them in a way that tells the complete story of our region; And bring full-dome video technology to the planetarium. The plan took a major leap forward when Memphis city government approved an agreement with Memphis Museums, Inc., our non-profit arm, to provide matching funds up to $10,000,000 for the project. We still have to flesh out the preliminary plans, raise the matching private money, and then (whew!) actually do the work. It will take perhaps 8 to 10 years before it is all complete, but some elements will appear much sooner. Having the backing of our city’s leadership is an enormous boost. Based on the estimated size of the overall project, the City’s support will turn every private dollar into two dollars. Everyone who cares about this museum is enormously grateful to the City for its support. So, on behalf of all of those students, teachers, parents, grandparents, tourists and others…

Thank You, Memphis!
