The Pink Palace…Head and Heart It’s no surprise when I write positive things about our museum system. So, in this Dispatch, I am going to cite two other people. Let’s call one the head and the other the heart. First, the head. Do museums really educate? Can you prove it? Or are they just places where kids run around and have fun? Nothing wrong with fun per se, but with all the pressure on our students to perform you have to ask, do museums help? Yes! Here is proof: Dr. Elena Delavega of the University of Memphis did a study on the learning gains of students from two schools who participated in our Learning Labels Program. The students showed learning gains averaging 383%. That is not a typo. There is no missing decimal point. Three hundred and eighty-three per cent. That is for both boys and girls, and that is just the average! So, do museums really educate? Yes! Now the heart. A very dedicated young teacher, Lilla Pivnick, brought her second grade class here on a field trip. She wrote that her students saw “a real dinosaur skeleton, gemstones, a giant model of the cell, and an old timey grocery store that might have been in service during the late 1800s….then reclined in the Pink Palace’s spacious planetarium to watch a special showing of The Cowboy Astronomer.” She went on, “My students were amazed by what they saw at the Pink Palace. It truly did open their minds. For many, this was their first museum visit.” Their minds were opened! Sounds like fun. And what do you call a place where you have fun and learn at the same time? The Pink Palace Family of Museums! Come see us!

dig into a day of fun at coon creek! may 4, 2013 / 10am - 4pm / free admission!

If you've ever been to the annual fossil dig at Coon Creek Science Center, then skip this article. You already know how amazing this one-of-a-kind experience is. Mark your calendar, pack a lunch, and get ready to re-live the fun! If you've never been, then read on to learn how this unique family experience is one you'll never forget! Once a year, Pink Palace Family of Museums Members are invited to drive out to one of our lesser known (but perhaps one of our most interesting) properties to participate in a fun, family-friendly search for fossils at Coon Creek in Adamsville, TN. The property, at one time covered by the Gulf of Mexico, is now home to seventy-million year old fossils from the lifeforms that once swam the waters there. The remains of clams, snails, sharks, and even giant mosasaurs have been found superbly preserved by the clay in the sediment at the McNairy County dig site. On Coon Creek Members Day, you're invited to

uncover the past by digging for and taking home your very own prehistoric souvenirs! Staff will be on hand to show you how to clean and care for your finds in order to get them home safely. We'll also have a telescope and scale model of the solar system set up so you can take a closer look at the sky, as well as an education table full of fun activities for the kids. This is an all-day event, so make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, snacks, and a picnic lunch for you and your family, as well as blankets or chairs to sit on. Rain or shine, we'll be out looking for fossils, so check the weather and dress appropriately!

What to bring: Sunscreen · Insect Repellant · Seating (Blankets, Lawn Chairs, etc.) · A Picnic Lunch · Your Membership Card!

Experience art and music of WWI June 8 - September 1, 2013

from swords to plowshares:

Metal trench art from world war I Can beauty and inspiration be born of the materials of war? Can objects of destruction become objects of creativity and peace? It is remarkable that during the dark days of World War I, fighting soldiers and those convalescing from wounds were moved to create marvelous objects of art from discarded materials intended to devastate. The human spirit is on display in this amazing exhibit, which proves that from the trenches came something truly amazing: intricate works of art crafted of the salvaged 足materials of battle. Soldiers who fought in this Great War often came from metal-working backgrounds and, between battles, had plenty of idle time. Turning their attention away from the horror of the present, they decided to put their skills to use by focusing on their art. The result is an astonishing collection of works that are sure to take one's breath away. See this beautiful collection of over 150 artillery shell vases, ashtrays, cigarette lighters, and more from countries including Great Britain, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, and Hungary, as well as historical photographs of soldiers making art!

See this if:

You like art. Or war. Or maybe just the art of war!

songs of the patriot As the war was being fought in Europe, many music publishers, songwriters, and cover artists in America were rallying support for the troops overseas. Opening on the 99th Anniversary of the start of WWI, Songs of the Patriot takes viewers back in time to relive the American wartime homefront of the Great War. Explore how musicians and artists expressed a range of war related feelings and travel back in time to examine many of the songs and sheet music covers that accompanied them, as you witness firsthand how effective the cover art for wartime music could be. With titles like "We'll Do Our Share While You're Over There" and "What Kind of American Are You," music was more than just a way to evoke feeling, it was a call to action. Urges to buy Liberty Bonds often graced the covers of some sheet music while other messages such as "Music will help win the war," and "A nation that sings can never be beaten," donned the cover of others. Take a look at the trench art of Swords to Plowshares and compare how greatly the art being made by those in the war differed from the art of those who stayed home.

See this if:

You actually do judge books by their covers and would like to see some of the most beautiful ones around!

40 Years of Crafts fair May 11 - September 29

In the footsteps of SGT. York In addition to our already outstanding exhibits, this summer we have added a third exhibit component to complete the visitor experience - a tribute to one of the greatest American war heroes of all time! Sergeant Alvin C. York, a native Tennessean, is famous for his heroic actions during an attack that happened in France during World War I. He led an offensive that took on a German machine gun nest, killed dozens of enemy combatants, and captured numerous weapons, all in the face of fierce resistance. Sergeant York received numerous distinctions for this and other battles, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was greeted as a war hero upon his eventual return to the States and has since become a legendary figure in American history. While you are enjoying trench art and music from the Great War, don't forget to take some time to get to know this Tennessee son who so bravely represented both his State and his nation in battle. Featuring artifacts, photographs and detailed historical accounts, this exhibit provides the visitor with insights into York’s background, his deeds in battle, and the path from soldier to legend.

See this if:

You've seen the movie Sgt. York and couldn't be more excited to experience the legend for yourself!

Celebrating 40 years of the beloved Pink Palace Crafts Fair, this juried exhibit on the Mezzanine showcases the work of some of the most talented and skilled craftsmen ever to participate in the event. Comprised of 28 works of art from 24 different artists and craftsmen, this display has been four decades in the making, and also features a history of the Crafts Fair as well as a history of the Friends of the Pink Palace.

See this if:

You appreciate the incredible time, talent and skill that goes into making a beautiful work of art, or if you just can't wait until the next Pink Palace Crafts Fair!

ask dave! “Is there water on Mars?” "Let me start by saying that there IS water on Mars! Its existence was indicated visually by an orbiting spacecraft called Odyssey, but most conclusively found by the Phoenix Lander in July of 2008. The problem is that unlike on Earth, water on Mars is not easy to find. On earth, there is so much that it pools in lakes and oceans, and settles as snow falling from the sky. On Mars the air pressure is so low that the weak bonds that hold molecules of H2O together on earth are overcome by the low air pressure. The separate molecules on the surface of Mars fly apart and evaporate, eventually floating off into space. So where is Mars water? It is located under the polar caps where carbon dioxide has frozen on top of it, and underground where it is protected somewhat from the warming sun and the low air pressure." – Dave Maness, Sharpe Planetarium Supervisor E-mail your questions to museumscope@gmail.com, and be sure to put “Ask Dave” in the subject line.

Magevney House to re-open in summer

Come see one of memphis' most historic homes

The Pink Palace Family of Museums is just that: a family. But without our oldest member, we have never quite been complete. This summer, all of that changes when the Magevney House is reopened to the public.

You may be asking, “Wait, what is the Magevney House again?” Although it has been closed for almost a decade, long-time members and residents may remember this small white cottage that sits near downtown Memphis, not too far from the other historical house that belongs to our family: the Mallory-Neely House. These two houses, both built in the 1800’s, share very different backgrounds. Almost as old as the city of Memphis itself, the Magevney House was built in the 1830’s by Eugene Magevney, an Irish immigrant and the first permanent schoolteacher to reside in Memphis. The first Catholic mass in the city was held in this house, and it was eventually given to the City of Memphis and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. We have maintained the house and kept it furnished as it would have been in the 1850’s, when Magevney still resided there. We hope that everyone will enjoy this essential part of Memphis history.

the mysterious shrunken head:

An inside look at the Pink Palace's infamous artifact could be done. Finally, in 1977, Jack Scharff decided he wanted to have all the loaned items returned to him, but, as luck would have it, he agreed to loan the Pink Palace the shrunken head again in 1979. It remained on loan until just last year, when Jack finally agreed to donate it. The head will now remain on permanent display at the Pink Palace Museum, its final home. The question still remains, though. Is this a real shrunken head? After all, people have tried to pass off imitations in the past. In this case, we know for a fact that it is genuine. Abe visited South American tribal regions in modern-day Ecuador and Peru where head shrinking was a common practice. It is therefore incredibly possible that the head we have on display is the real deal. For those Museum visitors with a morbid curiosity, we have posted the process that “headhunters” go through to get a finished shrunken head. Even if you don’t want to know all the grisly details, you should still go check out this fascinating item for yourself. Though the practice itself is dark, the culture and history behind the artifact is no less profound.

Now on display: One of the most memorable artifacts that Museum visitors notice upon exploring the Pink Palace Mansion is the Shrunken Head. It sits on display in plain sight in the middle of the rotunda, and it is very hard not to stare at it and wonder: is that thing real? In this article, we’ll explore the answer to that question and explain exactly how this unique item came to reside at the Pink Palace. The story begins with Abe Scharff, whom some may know as the owner of Kraus Cleaners here in Memphis. Abe was a world traveler who liked to collect exotic items from all over the world during his travels. He was also very generous; starting in 1940, he lent several of these items to the Pink Palace for display, including the shrunken head. The number and variety of objects varied throughout the years but the shrunken head remained. After Mr. Scharff’s death in 1969, his wife and son, Jack, picked up a few of Abe’s items but left most of them on display at the Museum. From 1969 on, the Museum tried to gain permanent ownership of these items, but Mr. Scharff’s will was tied up in court and, therefore, nothing

why I love it:

Let’s say you love brownies, but sometimes you really need a quick pick-me-up. Well, they’ve got you covered at the Bella Caffe. These triple chocolate brownies are absolutely amazing: They are always moist and delicious, and they come with chocolate chips inside to add to the experience. Best of all, they have a little hint of espresso added for a small caffeine boost. For you non-coffee drinkers, don’t worry. It’s barely noticeable. For a quick, cheap treat that is baked fresh daily, you can’t beat the brownies at the Bella Caffe!

If ever there were a real life cookie monster, it would be me. Chocolate chip? Peanut butter? Oatmeal? Doesn't matter - I'll eat it. In fact, I'm pretty sure that if I could only have one dessert for the rest of my life, I'd pick the cookie. And if I had to pick a specific one? It'd be the White Chocolate Cherry Cookie from Bella Caffe. The sweet white chocolate with the delicious tang of the cherry is like no other cookie combination I've ever tasted. It's sophisticated, mouthwatering, and so good that I'll even forgive them for hiding fruit in my sweets.

We at the Pink Palace Family of Museums are on a mission. A mission to inspire people to learn. A mission to tell stories with specimens and artifacts. A mission to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn how Science, Technology, Nature, and Time have shaped the History of the Mid-South. With each of our properties, we strive to provide the best educational experience possible. At the Pink Palace Mansion and Museum and the historic Mallory-Neely and Magevney Houses, we work to bring history and culture to life through our rich collection of artifacts, exhibits, and educational programs. At the Sharpe Planetarium and CTI IMAXÂŽ Theater, we use the stars and big screen to bring other-worldly knowledge to our shows' viewers. Have comments about the Museum Scope? Suggestions on how to make it better? We want to hear from you! The Museum Scope is a member publication, and we'd love to hear what you have to say about it. If you think you know just the thing to really kick the Scope up a notch, we want to know! Love it? Hate it? Wish there was a dinosaur on every page? Let your voice be heard! While not every idea can be incorporated (do we really need to see so many dinosaurs?), every opinion matters and every idea will be taken into consideration.

One of these sharks is a Great White. What kind of shark is the other one?

Answer: The top shark is a Great White. The bottom shark is a Hammerhead!
