November/December 2012
According to some people, 2012 will see the end of the world. Even if that’s true, it won’t have been a bad year for the Pink Palace.

HONORARY TRUSTEE FOR LIFE
We have made great progress on our Master Plan with major support for full-dome theater in the Planetarium coming from Auto Zone. Equally important is the generous support for the reinvention of the Pink Palace Mansion itself, pledged by the Kemmons Wilson Family Foundation. Our deepest thanks to both of those wonderfully civic minded groups. Their support has provided a good launching pad for our capital projects while they are still in the early planning phases. You’ll be hearing more about these projects and others in the coming months. There is still more good news. Not only are we having success with our future projects, but we are having success with our “old friends.” Mallory-Neely House will reopen to the public November 9. Funding is tight. The House will be open Fridays and Saturdays only…but we are open. The Magevney House will also open in the near future. It’s wonderful to be able to offer people the opportunity to experience our historic properties and also wonderful to be making such progress on our plans for improving the Pink Palace. So, here's to a great 2012 and an even better 2013.

Mallory-Neely House Re-Opens! Friday, Nov 9 The Mallory-Neely House is re-opening, and we couldn't be more excited! Visit the only historic property in Memphis to retain most of its original furnishings when it re-opens to the public November 9. Built in 1852 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 25 room home contains beautifully stenciled and hand painted ceilings, parquet flooring, and stained-glass windows purchased at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Dating back to c. 1890, the original slate roof of the Mallory-Neely House has been replaced with a new roof that matches the original in every way. This new roof should last for another hundred years and help ensure the beauty of the property. In addition, the MalloryNeely House is now compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and is accessible on the first floor to visitors in wheelchairs. Admission to Mallory-Neely House is free for Pink Palace Family of Museum members.
Open beginning November 9 Friday & Saturday: 10am - 4pm (Last tour starts at 3pm)
Thanks for your support! The Pink Palace Family of Museums would like to thank all of the sponsors who have helped give new life to the Mallory-Neely House... We couldn't have done it without you! Thanks to: DAR, SAR, C.A.R. Chapter House, Inc. The Friends of the Pink Palace Bill and Dana McKelvy

Dear Friend, Remember the phrase, “read between the lines”? Often you have to do that to understand what is really going on. If you read between the lines of this holiday issue of Museum Scope—and every issue for that matter—here is what you will find: · Virtually every exhibit, IMAX® film, planetarium show, and program is aligned with our schools’ curriculum standards. That means teachers and homeschoolers get detailed information up front about how to use what we offer, in order to benefit their students. · We serve about 150,000 teachers and school children annually. · Our regular public admission charges are among the very lowest in our region, and we provide tens of thousands of families the opportunity to sample our Museum family at no charge through our free trial membership program every year. This is what a great museum does—serve as an educational fountainhead for its whole community. Of course, it costs money to do that. That is why we are asking for your help. The end of the year is coming. But, with your help, it won’t be the end of our work serving hundreds of thousands of teachers, students, parents and grandparents. As you think about what to support with your year-end gifts, please remember education at the Pink Palace Family of Museums. If you would like to discuss your gift, please call or email me at 901-636-2412 or norris.marcus@memphismuseums.org, or you can use the form below:
