Deede Wyatt wins 2013 Spirit Award Deede Wyatt, a 20 year volunteer with the Pink Palace Family of Museums, was recognized as the 2013 “Spirit Award” outstanding volunteer winner. Deede was a tour guide at Mallory-Neely House from 1993 until it closed in 2005 and served as a docent in the Pink Palace's traveling exhibits until last November when the historic house re-opened. She has participated in Pink Palace Crafts Fairs, offered her support at Member Nights, served as a greeter at the Educator Open House events, and was indispensable in preparing for the re-opening of Mallory Neely House. Deede independently researched and compiled historical facts about the Mallory-Neely family history and the architectural significance of Victorian Village and categorized the Mallory-Neely Historic Museum Library. Since the opening of the House, Deede has taken on various projects, done grunt work, filled empty shifts and stayed late to support tours for the House, even splitting her time between Mallory-Neely and the Pink Palace. Deede has also been an excellent mentor to new volunteers as they shadow tours during training. Her caring, cheerful personality and expert knowledge of the history of the Mallory-Neely family and mansion has made her a viable, strong asset to the staff/volunteer team at the Historic Houses. 9

happy holidays from our "family" to yours! For more than 80 years, many of those moments that let the future in for our kids have happened at the Pink Palace Family of Museums. The door might have been opened by a star show, a hands-on science demonstration, a tour of a historic house, a live animal program at the Nature Center, an IMAX® film, or the shrunken head. But for many kids none of that would have happened without the generosity of people like you. That is why we call our program of free admission for kids from Title I schools, Open Doors, Open Minds. People like you keep those doors—and minds—open. And we need your help now to keep them open. Last year 171,000 kids’ minds were opened here, and 75,000 of them came for free because of your generosity.

Does what we do at the Pink Palace make a difference? Here is what one second grade teacher, Lilla Pivnick, wrote about her class’s trip to the Pink Palace: “My students were amazed by what they saw at the Pink Palace. It truly did open their minds. For many, this was their first museum visit.” So, please help open a child’s mind. Open their door to the future. Please use the enclosed form to make your generous gift now. To donate online, visit www.memphismuseums.org. For more information, contact: Norris Marcus, Director of Development at 901.636.2412 or norris.marcus@memphismuseums.org
