CTI 3D Giant Theater open MON-SUN The CTI 3D Giant Theater is compliant with the American with Disabilities Act. At present, we have a total of 27 assistive listening devices. Nine of these devices (Captiview) provide closed captions. We also have 18 devices that enhance the volume for those visitors with hearing issues and those devices are also designed to provide a descriptive narrative of on screen actions on an additional audio channel. At the present, not all of the documentary movies we have shown in the theater have been digitally encoded by the documentary movie distributor with the necessary codes for the Captiview closed caption device and the DoReMi descriptive narrative capabilities. We have been informed that in the near future more documentary movies are being encoded with closed caption viewer Captiview and the DoReMi descriptive narrative features. The theater provides hearing impaired customers with a copy of the movie’s script with a red flashlight, for low light level reading. Customers in need of these devices should call our reservations number, (901)636-2362, so that we can make appropriate accommodations to serve their needs.
The operation of the Pink Palace Family of Museums is a successful public-private partnership.

DIRECTOR'S DISPATCH One of the best things about our Scarecrow Contest at Lichterman Nature Center is the way the scarecrows gracefully age from exposure to the elements. Would that nature were so kind to we flesh and blood creatures! Still, I urge you to see our scarecrows. Their makers put a great deal of effort and ingenuity into them, and after you see the scarecrows there is still much more at the Backyard Wildlife Center, The Visitors Center and all along the trails. After the Scarecrows’ gentle introduction to the fall season, you’ll find plenty of cool weather options to enjoy at our attractions. Our CTI 3D Giant Theater will bring you not only The Light Before Christmas and Polar Express again, but the popular sing-along version of Frozen. The Enchanted Forest Festival of Trees also will magically reappear. And if you want to contemplate really cold weather without having to experience it, get ready to follow our Education Manager, Alex Eilers, on her third expedition to the Antarctic. The only thing missing this year is our Planetarium. It is still under construction, but the good news is it will reopen early 2016 with truly awe-inspiring full-dome video equipment. So, as good as this upcoming holiday season is going to be here, just wait 'til next year!

SHARPE PLANETARIUM How Our Planetarium Got Its Start In November 1953, a group of high school boys formed the Memphis Astronomical Society. They gathered monthly at the Memphis Museum to hold astronomy programs and then look at stars from the museum lawn. Their programs were open to the public and anyone over the age of 12 could join the club. One of the members, Mike Snowden, wanted to take the club’s passion to a new level and get a planetarium for the city. The Astronomical Society hosted two meetings at the museum in March 1954 to see if there was enough interest in their idea. At the second meeting, Spitz Laboratories sent a man to demonstrate the Spitz projector on a portable canvas dome in the museum’s club room. Former mayor Walter Chandler and Park Commissioner H.S. Lewis attended the demonstration and left in favor of procuring a planetarium. Early conversations suggested putting the new attraction at the fairgrounds, Memphis State (now University of Memphis), Southwestern (now Rhodes College) or the museum. The museum won and museum director Ruth Bush got to work turning the religion exhibit gallery, which was located on the landing of the grand staircase, into a planetarium. She had the walls painted black, installed tilting chairs around the perimeter of the room and fireproofed the canvas dome. The projector was installed in October 1954, opened to the public in December and was air-conditioned the following August. The total cost of the project was $6,500.00, and shows were initially free for visitors. Since the museum did not have the funds to hire a planetarium director, the boys of the Astronomical Society hosted the shows. Jon Buhler, Michael Peck and Ned Lawrence presented shows on the weekends, but the planetarium closed during the week because they were in school. They pointed out constellations, talked about the Christmas star and did any other programming that they felt was needed. Eventually, the museum was able to hire staff to run the planetarium.
The New Planetarium is Almost Here! While opening dates aren't finalized and all we can say at this point is some time early in 2016, the full dome digital Planetarium is almost here! The new dome started going up at the end of September (as seen in the photos below) and the process is facinating to watch. Look forward to a full time-lapse video on our website once it's complete!
Wonders of the Universe Ends Saturday, November 29 Enjoy constellations and related classical mythology, with historical notes and seasonal astronomical events. Show times: 9:45, 11:00, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, and 4:00.

Decorating the Pink Palace has been a long-standing Memphis Christmas tradition. In 1951, the Museum displayed a forest of live, imaginatively decorated Christmas trees. The exhibit promoted fire safety and was co-sponsored by the Memphis Fire Department. At the opening, Santa Claus arrived in a fire engine. The trees were decorated with ornaments that were hand-made by Memphis school children. The ornaments were donated to local orphanages at the close of the exhibit, and the trees were planted on the grounds of city schools. The museum was a segregated place in the 1950s, and black citizens were only allowed to view the exhibit the Tuesday of the week it was open. For Christmas 1960, the staff hosted a program titled “Christmas Traditions South of Our Border.” It featured a lecture about Mexican traditions, a piñata and Spanish caroling by students from Immaculate Conception and Blessed Sacrament schools. The next year’s decorations consisted of model trains and featured a program about Christmas traditions around the globe. Central Baptist Church’s Junior Bell Choir played carols, and the planetarium put on a “Star of Bethlehem” show. In 1962, the five thousand members of the Shelby County Council of Garden Clubs held a Christmas show at the museum. They put up themed decorations in the different galleries and called it “Our Gift to Memphis at Christmas.” The 1968 holiday season featured the return of the school tree decorating contest. As in the 1950s, the staff wanted students to decorate live trees and then plant the trees at the schools. However, this time the Memphis Fire Department protested by saying that it was a fire hazard to have so many lit trees in the mansion. Artificial trees were decorated instead. At the opening ceremonies, Mayor Henry Loeb ceremonially lit the trees, Santa Claus arrived on a peppermint float, and the Dunn School choir sang carols. Since 2002, the Pink Palace has hosted the Enchanted Forest Festival of Trees, which benefits Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Turning all kinds of kids on to science and history! There is a special group of people in the Mid-South. They are working, raising children, watching TV in their comfy lounge chairs, enjoying dinner with family. They are special because, while doing these things, they are also providing support for children who visit the Pink Palace Museum.
of abilities can be turned on to science and history! The Pink Palace Museum turns kids of all health levels on to science and history! Memphis is blessed with world-class children’s healthcare facilities such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. The Pink Palace Museum is a safe, cool, stimulating place for families to enjoy the day together. We often see children wearing a headscarf, sometimes they are wearing a face mask, but we can still ‘see’ the smile on their faces! Because of special people who provide financial support to the Pink Palace Museum, we are able to welcome these vulnerable families at no cost to them – every time they come. You are invited to join this special group at the Pink Palace Museum! It’s a group of caring individuals who want the children of our communities to have a strong future. It’s a group of young and old, business persons and retired, who understand the importance of education. Turning all kinds of kids on to science and history is a great way to start.
Children need to be turned on to science and history – and a field trip to the Pink Palace Museum is the way to do it. It gets their eyes up from their cell phones. It introduces them to the history of names and places they see today. It opens up a world of possibilities for their future. These are the kids who will one day be science teachers, chemists and doctors, historians, conservationists and entrepreneurs. We just need to open the door for them!
Please send your gift today. You will feel so good knowing you are making a difference.
The Pink Palace Museum turns kids with all levels of abilities on to science and history! In October, we hosted the Autistic community for a special Science Night at the Museum.
