There’s a special kind of fun in the fall, and the Pink Palace has more ways to enjoy it than any place. You can have fun indoors at the Pink Palace by seeing the exhibit 40 Years of the Crafts Fair (through September 29) or by joining in the frightening festivities at the Boo!Ball on October 25. You can have fun indoors at Lichterman Nature Center at the Stomp in the Swamp on September 15 or outdoors watching the Scarecrows on the Event Lawn slowly molder into ever more frightening figures from September 12 to November 22. The autumnal piece de resistance is the Pink Palace Crafts Fair, October 11-13. Forty years ago it began modestly on the lawn of the Pink Palace. Through the loyal efforts of the Friends of the Pink Palace it has become our region’s pre-eminent crafts event, one of the real calling cards of our museum system. Here is a simple way to make sure you and your family enjoy a great fall. Grab your smart phone or a pencil and the calendar you keep on the refrigerator, and write down the dates of all these events.

We may not know what costume you should choose (*cough* dinosaur! *cough) but we've got just the place for you to dress up, drink, and dance the night away! Join us October 25 for the Pink Palace Boo Ball! With great food, drinks, and music by Walrus, we're certain you'll have a frightfully fun time! Tickets may be purchased at the Pink Palace Museum.

Congratulations to diane Mckinna, CVa on her volunteer certification!

The Pink Palace Family of Museums would like to congratulate our Volunteer Coordinator Diane McKinna, CVA for an outstanding acheivement! Diane recently earned the credential, "Certified in Volunteer Administration" from the Council in Volunteer Administration. Earning this internationally recognized CVA designation requires an extensive self-evaluation and the submission of a performance-based portfolio to a panel of professionals. In addition, Diane sat for a two hour examination covering all aspects of volunteer management. Our family is fortunate to have some of the most amazing volunteers that the Mid-South has to offer. Without their devotion and Diane's hard work, our museums would not be as wonderful as they are. Congratulations and thanks for everything you do, Diane! 2

Beloved Crafts Fair returns this october! October 11 & 12 from 10am - 6pm / October 13 from 10am - 5pm

One of the best things about living in Memphis is the people who call it home. Our community is an eclectic mix of bakers, businessmen, musicians, and restaurateurs, among other occupations, but it's the artists who live here who really make this city special. See some of the most talented, unique, and creative individuals this city has to offer at the Pink Palace Crafts Fair! Now in its 41st year, the Crafts Fair is the one of the largest events of its kind in the Mid-South. Craftspeople of all size, shape, age, and color gather in Audubon Park

for a shopping event filled with fantastic items you can't find anywhere else. Walk through the tents and you'll see everything from pottery, paintings, and jewelry, to handcarved furniture, and even toys for the kids. And that's just the crafts tents. There's also homemade fudge, soup mixes, and honey fresh from the beehive for sale, and with Christmas right around the corner, there's no better place to start searching for gifts. Shopping not your thing? Don't let that stop you from enjoying this family-friendly event! In addition to all the amazing items available for purchase, visitors to the Crafts Fair can enjoy watching live demonstrations by Craftspeople and a plethora of delicious food from vendors like Pronto Pups and the Museum's own Bella Caffe. There's also tons of great activities for kids, a petting zoo, and live entertainment. Don't miss out on the fun and your chance to be a part of this beloved Memphis Tradition!

September

Spend a day in the life of two ficticious radio DJs as they banter about astronomimcal topics and a universe of stars! Although some of the humor and astronomy may be too advanced for children, kids will love the special effects, beautiful pictures and stories in this show. And speaking of special effects, Planetarium Supervisor Dave Maness says, "We pull out all the stops on [them], with the result that this is the closest thing to a light show that we offer." Dave's favorite thing about the show? "I am always impressed by the high quality of the soundtrack and the specially composed musical pieces used in this program. They could have been produced in any of the professional hit-making studios right here in Memphis." 5

40 Years of Crafts fair: Staff favorites May 11 - September 29, 2013

"Daybreak in the forest" by Mary Jorgenson I like this piece because of the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Mary Jorgenson says that she gets her inspiration from nature, which is apparent in the vibrant colors of her piece.

"Tubby Dog" by Wayne Dorn Made of metal and full of character, this "Tubby Dog" never fails to bring a smile to my face as I pass by. Never has hard, cold metal seemed so warm and cuddly!

Picked by: Caroline Mitchell Carrico, Exhibits

"Oak Vase Carved & Appliqued" by tracy wilson This is so unique and beautiful. It is a striking display of nature portrayed and hand-crafted into art.

"Untitled" by Tully Hall Spotted and beautifully crafted, this playful wooden giraffe smiles down at me reminding me of an old rocking horse I frequently rode as a child. My nostalgic inner child screams, “Ride it! but alas, I am advised by security to only admire its magnificence from outside the glass case.

Magevney House reopens to the public September 7, 2013

See the Magevney House in all its historical glory! This small, white clapboard cottage was built in the 1830's and was home to Irish immigrant, Eugene Magevney, the first permanent schoolteacher to reside in Memphis. Furnished as a typical middle-class antebellum home might have been in 1850 and featuring several personal possessions of the Magevney family, it is one of Memphis' oldest remaining residences. Renovations are almost complete, and the Magevney House will be reopening to the public September 7, 2013! The house will be open the first Saturday of each month, from 1 p.m. to 4p.m. Free admission.

Blast from a crafts fair past The Pink Palace Crafts Fair is almost here! This October the Friends of the Pink Palace Family of Museums will be holding their 41st Annual Craft’s Fair. As a Mid-South tradition, the Pink Palace Crafts Fair has generated many fond memories and we’d like to share some of those with you! Dating back to the early 70’s, these photos show the roots of this beloved family-friendly event: music, crafts, and good ole fashioned fun.

Bella Caffe gets crafty with daily specials! What is your favorite item that you've ever had on the

The Debris Grilled Cheese. This came from visits to New Orleans when I would goto Mothers & buy The Ferdi. The Ferdi is a classic PoBoy (some would say the original PoBoy) made from Roast Beef, cabbage, & “Debris” (The drippings from the roast beef that sink to the bottom of the pot & have been soaking in AuJus). When we do the Italian Beef sandwich, the same thing happens to our beef, it breaks apart & soaks in the AuJus. We then take those drippings & add it to a grilled cheese. Glorious. Daily Specials board and why?

Has any one special item ever done so well that you've

If you're a fan of Bella Caffe, you know that hanging on the wall behind the counter is a "Daily Specials" board featuring delicous food and beverages that you won't find on the regular menu. In addition to the best coffee you'll ever taste and the most heavenly brownie you'll ever bite into, these unique items will leave your tastebuds wishing they could run away and marry the menu. Bella Caffe owner Mitch Buckner tells us more about these specials and how he creates them: How do you decide what your Daily Specials will be?

In the past I have earned the nickname “Dr Concocter” when having to create things out of nothing due to running out of ingredients or just coming up with stuff based on a limited amount of ingredients. This has moved into the daily specials. What do we have in the fridge that would mix together to make a good special? Sometimes we actually order items just for a specific special, other times we make the special based on what we’ve got available.

Drinks are usually easier to implement into a regular menu item (or at least seasonal menu). The White Irish Mocha is one of those that started out as a special but has moved into a regular menu item. On the food side of things, I think the Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese would probably do well as a regular menu item. Or the Memphis Blues (BBQ, Blue Cheese, Chipotle Cole Slaw, & Smoked Cheddar). Do you take suggestions/ideas for Daily Specials? Of course. We can only have some much creativity! considered adding it to your regular menu?

find us at the crafts fair!

Is each item on the Daily Specials menu a never before seen menu item/a new idea for a drink/sandwich/etc that

We keep an ever running list of totally new ideas but we also throw in old favorites too. Especially when we’ve got a busy day & aren’t feeling very “crafty.” Even when we do old favorites, we try to change them up a little so its always a little bit different.

you thought you'd test out?

Where do these ideas come from? Would you say they are inspired by your own imagination or by dishes that you have seen and wanted to make your own version of?

All of the above. A lot of them are completely from what I think up (or what the rest of the guys in the kitchen think up) but some times they are from dishes I’ve seen from other places. Sometimes it’s a mixture of the 2, we see something we like & we recreate it.

For more than 80 years, many of those moments that let the future in for our kids have happened at the Pink Palace Family of Museums. The door might have been opened by a star show, a hands-on science demonstration, a tour of a historic house, a live animal program at the Nature Center, an IMAX® film, or the shrunken head. But for many kids none of that would have happened without the generosity of people like you. That is why we call our program of free admission for kids from Title I schools, Open Doors, Open Minds. People like you keep those doors—and minds—open. And we need your help now to keep them open. Last year 171,000 kids’ minds were opened here, and 75,000 of them came for free because of your generosity.

Does what we do at the Pink Palace make a difference? Here is what one second grade teacher, Lilla Pivnick, wrote about her class’s trip to the Pink Palace: “My students were amazed by what they saw at the Pink Palace. It truly did open their minds. For many, this was their first museum visit.” So, please help open a child’s mind. Open their door to the future. Please use the enclosed form to make your generous gift now.
