DIRECTOR'S DISPATCH Turning the Corner
I’m writing this in late September. The trees still hold their leaves. There is more than an occasional need for air conditioning.
Then again, I wore a sweatshirt as I took my early morning exercise today. Morning light comes through windows at an angle that makes my blood feel different. It is the first of the months that end in, “brrr.”
So, like any mortal my thoughts turn to endings and beginnings. For you even more so. By the time you read this, the year-end holidays will be well in sight. Personally, that end of the year feeling is comfortingly familiar, but this year is different here at the Pink Palace. And January will be truly two-faced. We’ll look back at the change in our CTI Theater. Now we have the capacity to show 3D movies and also feature length ones. So, you can see such movies as Pocahontas and Polar Express on our giant screen. And we will look ahead. By early next year—March, we hope— we will have full-dome video capability in our Planetarium. That means any video that can be rendered on a computer screen can be shown on our 51-foot dome. There is more change coming…a re-imagining of our beloved Mansion and then a full-blown re-invention of all our exhibits. We hope to cap off this parade of changes in 2019 with a new exhibit hall on regional history, in time for our City’s Bicentennial. You can see some of the drawings of what is in store on our website at www.memphismuseums.org/master-plan. I would truly appreciate the chance to tell you more about our plans in person and to hear your thoughts on them. If you would like to do that, please call or email me: 901-636-2371 or steve.pike@memphsitn.gov. Thanks!

Ask Dave! •Most Popular Scarecrow Contest: Sea Scare by Abbey Vincent’s Family Project (left) "With the recent lunar eclipse in October, I'm wondering if you have a list of total lunar eclipse dates for the past 10 years or so? Also, do you have any info on the Metonic Cycle?"
Thanks for your questions! Yes, I have a list of past total lunar (and solar) eclipses. In fact, it goes 4,000 years into the past and 1,000 years into the future! It is the Five Millennium Canon of Lunar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000 (2000 BCE to 3000 CE) by Fred Espinak and Jean Meeus. If you want to search for it online, it is a 2006 NASA publication (catalogue #) NASA/TP-2009-214172. Next, to paraphrase, the Metonic Cycle is the period of about 19 years that it takes for moon phases to repeat their relative pattern. Thus both Solar and Lunar eclipses in the same Metonic cycle will repeat on nearly the same day of the year, every 19 years (or 6,939 or 6,940 days), depending on leap years. Although it was known to ancient Babylonian astronomers, this period/cycle was independently discovered by a Greek astronomer named Meton around 430 BCE. – Dave Maness, Planetarium Supervisor

HISTORIC PROPERTIES An Unexpected Gift The second-floor hallway rug at Mallory-Neely had definitely seen better days, but when Joe Remmers was brought in to determine whether or not the rug’s curled and torn edges could be repaired, his visit brought welcome news the staff never expected to hear.
Old Rug
Take your family on a historic tour!
New Rug
Remmers, owner of J. Remmers Rug & Specialty Cleaners, is a leading expert in oriental rug repair and restoration –so he knows his rugs. Joe's family has been in the oriental-rug business for over 100 years and he got his start at age 12 by working in his father’s shop. After seeing the Mallory-Neely rug, Joe knew it was beyond repair. ”No amount of money is going to be a long-term help for the rug.” That’s when Joe decided to donate an exquisite, richly colored, 13’ x 9’ Persian Mashhad rug to the MalloryNeely House. Joe said he chose this particular rug because of its appropriateness for Mallory-Neely – based in part on the year it was made and its splendor. The wool from which the Mashhad rug is woven provides longevity even in high traffic situations. And, if the rug donation wasn’t enough – he also volunteered his services to clean Mallory-Neely’s entire rug collection! When asked what had inspired him to go this extra mile, he smiled, “It was important to me that these rugs be cleaned correctly, and I knew there was most likely not a very substantial budget to provide for that.”
Joe’s passion and generosity are evident. “I’m not a guy blessed with a lot of financial resources, but I believe it is incumbent of all Memphians to take ownership of their city – which includes its history. If we don’t do it, who will?”

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT The card simply read: Max doesn’t often have the chance to enjoy such bounteous nature. Canopy and lawns are foreign to his neighborhood. He started off that day feeling a bit nervous – what would he find there? Would there be snakes? What about tigers? Would he get bitten or chased? Worse, would it be boring? Instead of being scared or bored, Max left exhausted yet exhilarated! Back at the library, he wrote this note (pictured left).
It came with similar cards from Carlos, Maitea, Emil, Douglas, Mayes, Reid, Delia and Tytus. These children and their teachers participated in Explore Memphis!, the summer program of the Memphis Public Library & Information Center. On a particularly hot day, they stepped off the bus and entered a whole new world at Lichterman Nature Center.
Max needs experiences such as this. And we can continue to provide them – with your help. While this summer field trip to Lichterman is but a memory, Max can benefit from the lively learning offered at the Pink Palace Family of Museums’ facilities year-round. This Holiday Season, please help us share with Max the Magic of Science – Holiday Edition. The educational components are listed below,* but for Max and his friends, the magic is in watching snow appear before their eyes! Learning why tinsel is so sticky! And so much more!
Max walked along wooded trails and learned about lotus pads and poison ivy. He enjoyed the sound of his shoes on the wooden bridge, and eagerly waited his turn to feed the fish in Mertie’s Lake. Later, Max entered a giant forest and walked among the treetops – at least that’s how he felt on the 25 ft. raised walkway into the old-growth trees. In the Backyard Wildlife Center, Max watched in delight as the Curator showed off some turtles, giggled when he touched a skink (not a skunk!), and shuddered at the poisonous spiders (safely behind glass). He and his friends pressed their hands and faces to the glass as they joined a giant tortoise in his underwater habitat. The resident hawk haughtily exhibited bird behavior.
With your gift today, the world of discovery will continue to be opened. We’ve done our part by preparing top-quality “lively learning.” Please join us in this effort! You will make a difference in Max’s life. And your reward will be to hear him say, “Thank you!” *1,000 children grades 2-6, many from Title I schools; 45-60 minutes; supports curriculum standards related to: TN Sci:1,9, MS Sci:1a, 2a, 2b, 2e, 2f, and AR Sci:1,5
