Mallory-Neely House hours:

All Critters Cute and Not It’s late 1978. Britain, Russia, France and the USA all performed nuclear tests recently. Anthropologist Margaret Mead died a few weeks ago. The first computer bulletin board was just posted. A Czech cosmonaut has gone up in space—the first from a country other than the USA or the USSR. An astronomer recently proposed that Janus and Epimetheus are two separate moons of Saturn sharing the same orbit. Of course, the most important event of that period was that our planetarium opened in its current location using a Minolta Series 4 projector. It was the best available back then. Now, thirty-five years later, we are updating our planetarium technology to bring you a new state of the art experience—full dome theater. Imagine anything you can render graphically on a computer screen…which is pretty much anything, right? Now imagine you can render that on a 50 foot dome floating over your head. That is full dome theater. The new full dome theater at the Sharpe Planetarium will open in early 2015. We will close the planetarium temporarily September this year. During the interim period we will still offer astronomy programs in the Mansion Theater. I could write volumes and never convey the level of improvement full dome theater offers. It’s like a great meal. Words don’t do it justice. You just have to experience it.

SHARPE PLANETARIUM Sharpe Planetarium Closing for Renovations! September 2014 – Early 2015 In the experience of our earliest ancestors, nothing could compare with the sight of a clear night sky sprinkled with hundreds of stars. Our “star struck” forefathers have been trying to make sense of it ever since. Starting with simple drawings, they created better and better models of the known universe. Through observation and testing of hypotheses, they built models like the ancient Antikythera (pictured to the left). The motions of these devices mimicked the clockwork motions observed in the heavens. It is no wonder that it took actual clockmakers George Graham and Thomas Tompion to build one of the first models of the modern solar system (pictured to the right). One was presented around 1704 to the 4th Earl of Orrery and the name Orrery stuck with the device. While solar system models allowed us to see a relatively small part of the universe in miniature, it would take a bigger leap in technology to make a realistic representation of a starry night. One attempt came in 1913 with the Atwood Sphere, a 17 foot wide hollow metal ball with precisely sized and placed holes that let light in to represent the stars in their proper locations. By the 1920s brilliant electric lights rapidly replaced the softer glow of gaslight. City nights would never be the same. Soon little starlight would reach the eyes of city dwellers anymore. The memory of starry nights and awareness of the Atwood Sphere helped spur Walter Bauersfeld and Rudolf Straubel at Zeiss to develop one of the first projection planetariums in August of 1923. The first public showing was at the Deutches Museum in Munich on October 21 of that year. The modern planetarium was born. From that year until the early 1980s this optical mechanical technology was the standard used around the world.

Show times: 9:45, 11:00, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, and 4:00. Wonders of the Universe During construction Enjoy constellations and related classical mythology, with historical notes and seasonal astronomical events. Hubble Vision 2 Ends in September when construction begins Embark on a breathtaking odyssey through the Universe, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. This one-ofa-kind instrument allows us to see to the limits of the observable universe, and to explore planets, star birth, supernovae, galaxy collisions, black holes, and more! Starlit Nights Ends in September when construction begins Take a guided tour through the summer skies showing seasonal constellations and telling some historical background and related stories from classical mythology. Visible planets and special astronomical events of the summer months included! For more information or show times, check www.memphismuseums.org

"Look for us to reopen early next year with a whole new look, new programs, and new capabilities..." Just over 30 years later, the Sharpe Planetarium is about to take a big step into the 21st Century. If all goes as planned, the planetarium should be closing soon for a few months of renovations. Look for us to reopen early next year with a whole new look, new programs, and new capabilities as we join the growing ranks of full dome digital facilities. Just when space travel is becoming a reality, this new digital projector will give us the ability to go where our imagination leads us. Until we get the “go ahead” to begin, we will continue with our already great programs Hubble Vision 2 and Starlit Nights or Autumn Nights. During the construction period, it is our plan to offer a “window” into the universe with a flat-screen program called Wonders of the Universe in the Mansion Theater or Discovery Theater. In this program we will keep you up to date with the stars of the fall and winter as well as give you a hint of what is to come in the new Sharpe Planetarium.

Congratulations to Dave Maness! The Memphis Pink Palace Family of Museums is proud to announce Sharpe Planetarium Supervisor Dave Maness has been named a 2014 recipient of the Paul W. Campbell Fellowship award, given by SEPA (Southeastern Planetarium Association). For more than two decades, Maness has been a member of SEPA. He spearheaded their annual auction funding the SEPA scholarship program. Dave also served as President of SEPA 2001-2002. 2

CTI 3D GIANT THEATER NOW SHOWING! Meerkats 3D Facinating Facts about Meerkats: • A study of wild meerkats in South Africa found that they could identify and differentiate the voices of different individuals within their clans. • Meerkats get all the moisture they need from their diet of roots and fruits. • Adult meerkats can kill and eat poisonous snakes and scorpions without being hurt because they've become immune to the venom. from livescience.com

Flight of the Butterflies in 3D Facinating Facts about Monarch butterflies: • The monarch butterfly is an ancient tropical species, millions of years old. • Thought to have originated in the Mexican and Central American mountains and valleys, it eventually invaded warming northern regions driven by its search for its precious food source, the milkweed plant. • The butterfly’s Latin name is Danaus plexippus, inspired by the Greek myth of Danaus, whose daughters fled their homeland to avoid forced marriages. • Females are darker colored and have wider bands of black scales along the veins. Males are slightly larger with two black pouches along a vein next to the abdomen. Locally sponsored by

Jerusalem 3D Facinating Facts about Jerusalem: • The most important resource that has allowed Jerusalem to flourish is WATER: it has a spring of fresh water that flows all year round, as well as the Dead Sea, Red Sea, and Sea of Galilee. • Jerusalem is like a jigsaw puzzle thousands of years old. Archeologists dig through the layered ruins of many different “Jerusalems” which are deposited on top of one another, like a city-sandwich! • Dozens of languages are spoken in Jerusalem today, probably because it is a highly travelled area, drawing visitors from many corners of the world. Tornado Alley 3D Facinating Facts about Tornado Chasers: • Because tornadoes normally travel from southwest to the northeast, it is usually safest for Chasers to park southeast of the tornado for filming. • Tornado chasers have to be careful of the lightning coming from the thunderstorms that produce tornadoes. In 1983, lightning struck right next to five tornado chasers. Luckily they all lived. • Tornado chasers are prone to car crashes. Sometimes tornado chasers get hit by cars fleeing the same storm they are chasing. • Hail is a common concern for tornado chasers, it can damage cars and weather equipment, as well as cause injury. from tornado-facts.com

Mallory-Neely-Magnificence Victorians are renowned for their love of elaborate décor, and Memphis’ own Neely family is no exception. The Neely’s’ love of the ornate is carefully preserved within the walls of the Mallory-Neely House, their family home from 1883 to 1905. Their wallpaper, furnishings, sculpture and artwork create a unique time capsule of the wealthy Victorian’s mind. For their parlor, James Columbus Neely and his wife Frances, chose a statue of Canova’s Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss. The original statue is in the Louvre in Paris, France. Catalogs of the day show cheap copies, but the Neely’s would settle for no miniature plaster version. Theirs is an exact duplicate worked by Italian craftsman Lupani Verdi, in solid marble and onyx. This copy is equivalent in weight to a Volkswagen Beetle. To accommodate that weight, the Neely’s built a brick column in their basement beneath the statue to keep it from falling through their floor!

Magevney House 198 Adams Ave, Memphis, TN 38103 Open the first Saturday of each month from 1–4pm. Visit us Saturday:September 6 and October 4! Free admission to the public!
