The MP series coilovers offer the most features and the best quality for under $1350. HSD Coilovers use a Monotube damper design favoured by high end suspension companies and each kit is TUV approved. This level of quality and performance is usually found on much more expensive suspension products.

HIGH QUALITY MONOTUBE DAMPERS Cheaper aftermarket dampers use a twin-tube design with low pressure gas whereas our Monotube damper design uses large diameter pistons and a much higher gas pressure to better stabilise the oil within, even under extreme and prolonged use.

ISSUE PREVIEW

WE’RE FURIOUS! ARE YOU?

W

elcome back to what has shaped up to be a fairly Japan-heavy issue of PASMAG. I mean, we’re good with that. Are you good with that? Great. Right away, we have the latest and greatest from the land of the rising sun. Adam Zillin ran around the Tokyo Auto Salon snapping some great photos and provides some insight into where the industry may be going. Zillin also sat down with members of the RH9 group, who happen to be the founding members of a little thing called Mid Night Club. There are some really interesting tidbits in there for just about anyone who’s interested in how things got rolling. The latest trends from Tokyo and North America are covered in our “Trending” section. The skinny behind KUHL Racing’s engraved GT-R and Ford’s new Focus RS are here, along with some great shots from Garrett’s Boost Festival and Wekfest Hawaii. There’s even a rundown of the champs from IFO this past year, and our Hot New Products pages are filled with the best. Get filled in. Are you looking forward to Furious 7? Of course you are! Why did we even ask? We take a look towards the movie, but also a look back at the rest of the franchise. The actors all took turns answering questions like: “Which car was your favorite of the series?” or “What was your favorite moment on set?” It’s all here. On the mobile electronics side of the ledger, we start to dig into Project C6 with Garry Springgay, who shares his detailed plans for the audio system and provides valuable planning insight to both newbies and pros. Cabe Sipes does the right thing in “Cabe’s Corner” and admits when he’s wrong. Follow Cabe through a botched build that made a client unhappy, and how he made everything right and kept his integrity. That’s very valuable stuff right there!

The reason you’re picking this magazine up and flipping it open is because of that awesome cover car, let’s be honest. This GT-R – or #BLKHAMR as it’s known on the web – totes one of North America’s first Rocket Bunny kits for the Nissan R35, as well as a lot of blood sweat and tears. There was some struggle to get here, but looking at the car we can say it’s definitely worth it. There is another Skyline in this issue of PASMAG too, and it’s the Kenmeri that belongs to Liberty Walk’s Wataru Kato. Done up with traditional stylings taken to the extreme, we can guarantee you will never see another Skyline that looks like this one. A VIP Lexus GS300 also takes up residence here. Built up with only the best and most trusted parts, it’s not hard to love this car. The hidden touches under the hood and in the trunk are definite bonuses and really bring home that JDM VIP feel. If you haven’t started flipping madly through the pages already, we commend you; you have strong willpower. As always, let us know your thoughts on our social feeds (@ PASMAG and facebook.com/pasmag) or at letters@pasmag.com. Thanks for picking us up. We know you’ll enjoy your stay.

THE LEGEND OF THE MID NIGHT CLUB: PART 1 INTRODUCING RECORD HOLDERS 9 (A.K.A. RH9)

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM ZILLIN

"Keep in mind, the Japanese were running eight-second passes in R32s before many of us were born or knew what a GT-R was."

NO DOUBT, MANY OF YOU READING PASMAG HAVE HEARD OF THE “MID NIGHT CLUB.” THIS GROUP OF LEGENDARY STREET RACERS NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION; THEY’VE BEEN THE FOCUS OF BOTH ARCADE AND CONSOLE VIDEO GAMES – EVEN TO THIS DAY – AND HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED SOMEWHAT OF A MYTH FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS. THE PEOPLE AMONG THEIR RANKS MAKE UP THE BIBLE BELT OF STREET RACING INFAMY IN JAPAN. I know a lot of the members of Mid Night personally, and am good friends with some of the senior ranking personalities in the group, but the entire premise of Mid Night is still shrouded in secrecy for very specific reasons. Working my way up through the chain of command – even as a member myself – in order to bring some of these stories to light proves quite the task. Let’s just say that you don’t simply walk into their shops or offices and casually get the skinny on the back story. It has taken me 10 long years to get to this point – if that’s any indication of the egg shells I continue to negotiate. As I continue down this rabbit hole (one that will very likely lead to

some light at the end of the tunnel), let us stop along the way so that I can introduce you to another very important group that you have most likely never heard of: the RH9 group. This particular series of insider columns starts with an overview of what the RH9 group embodies, with the aim of placing a spotlight on some of its core members. First is the name. RH9 stands for “Record Holders 9.” Specifically speaking, all tuners accepted into the group had to be capable of building cars that could blast down the quarter-mile in nine seconds or less. Yes, the original idea of the group was based on drag racing; pure zero-yon stuff that later developed into what we now know as time attack. During the early 1990s, the R32 GT-R was, naturally, the weapon of choice for most members, but a few members specialized in equally deadly machinery like the Lancer Evolution, which could be tuned – even at that time – to monstrous power outputs of over 700 horse-

power. More on that later, though. Keep in mind, the Japanese were running eight-second passes in R32s before many of us were born or knew what a GT-R was. Do you feel that? It’s gravity suddenly weighing down on your thoughts! I feel it too, so don’t worry. Although my issue is with being old enough to remember. Some would say too old, but I digress. The RH9 group, in stark contrast to the Mid Night club, didn’t want to be associated with (or stuck to the stigma of) street racing. It was illegal, it was risky and it could have damaged – or even worse, destroyed – their business integrity. At that time, street racing in Japan was akin to the Wild West, where manufacturers went to battle against each other for superiority in the showroom and on the street, with tuners taking the baton for how far they could push the envelope of performance – and the law. Some of the greatest cars to ever come out of Japan did so during the tuning equivalent of the “golden years” between 1985 and 2000. Everything you have ever loved or revered about hardcore Japanese machines began, in a major part, with this group. This is the real JDM. In respect to the RH9 group specifically, the quest for profesAPRIL // MAY 2015

RH9 exists to excel; to push the tuning boundaries as a collective. It still does today. It’s not as if they had a choice. Instead, they were spoiled for it. But above all, being legitimate was paramount. There’s a lot to go through and, personally speaking, I’m extremely privileged to have the connections I do. Among them is one of RH9’s early “adopters” – although that is a rather unintentionally dismissive assessment of a man who is one of the major pillars in Japanese tuning, and arguably the most seasoned and experienced Evo tuner on the planet. As you’ll find out in the next edition of these editorials,

sional legitimacy in lieu of the law, and the desire to build their businesses around this premise, led the members to go from what was initially a non-profit organization to a full-fledged corporate entity in 2003. Yes, RH9 is a current and actual corporation comprised of the who’s-who of tuning in Japan. Which tuning brands are involved in this group, you ask? Does the name Top Secret ring a bell? How about JUN? Endless? What about Top Fuel or Phoenix Power? The presidents behind these tuning giants are all original members and still are to this day. In fact, the RH9 group is comprised of 36 active companies that co-exist to push the envelope of tuning, honing their skills in the workshop by producing monsters, only to then take each other on at the track. It’s not just a locally-centralized group either. The tuners making up RH9 stretch as far south as Okinawa and as far north as Hokkaido. There’s a lot of densely-packed societal space in between. Importantly, the track is where RH9 wanted to clearly differentiate themselves from the street racing scene. Legitimacy – at least in respect to accolade and the money it brought in – had to be earned at the track or strip. It started with a few of the original members renting track time to simply do

what they loved to do. But back then, track time was expensive, so they actively enlisted other tuning entities to support their efforts. Rapidly, tuners small and large joined one by one, forming what was essentially a tuning crusade, the likes of which Japan had not previously experienced. Heady stuff indeed. This crusade is part of the reason time attack was born. At the very core of the RH9 group, competition against each other meant pushing their cars and spirits to the limit on the track in order to one-up the competition. It was fierce. It led to sales, infamy and broken relationships. “All’s fair in love and war,” as the saying goes. One major boom for the group came in the form of print advertising, since print ads equal business and, at that time, Daijiro Inada’s Option magazine was at the forefront (and still is) of all that is holy in tuning circles within Japan. Because many of the smaller workshops couldn’t afford spreads of their own, as a conglomerate advertising under the RH9 group, the tuners facilitated cheaper inserts for everyone concerned. It was a marriage of sorts. The marriage didn’t last for some, but we’ll leave the dirty details out of this delicious automotive cocktail for now.

"Does the name Top Secret ring a bell? How about JUN? Endless? What about Top Fuel or Phoenix Power? The presidents behind these tuning giants are all original members and still are to this day."

Tazawa san bucked the trend of monster GT-Rs by harnessing his WRC rally experience and channelling it into Mitsubishi’s legendary platforms in the VR4 and Lancer Evolution. He still holds the accolades to this day. The story about his foray to Malaysia to compete in a Jackie Chan-sponsored drag event is the stuff of legend – and promises to be a rollicking good read.

TUNING

It occurred to me as I sat down with Tazawa san to discuss his personal and professional involvement in the RH9 group that I was privy to something significant – something almost unheard of outside of Japan, and something I am very honored to bring to the readers of PASMAG. It’s a labor of love. Now that I’m on the topic, I keenly remember being invited by Smoky Nagata to attend an RH9 reunion party at last year’s Tokyo Auto Salon – the first of its kind ever staged – and I marveled that it had never happened before that day. That’s not to mention the alcohol-fueled hijinks that took place at a certain bar a short while later. On stage that night were people I looked up to as a teen. They were all under one roof. I had to pinch myself to make sure it was actually happening. It was a display of unity, a show of force. It was profound to see the “group” coming together to reinforce that RH9 is still an actual group instead of individual tuners, which many casual observers think is the case. There is unity in chaos, on many levels. But for you, dear readers, I feel that in order to get the most out of this series of articles, you will need to grasp the key concept that, in Japan – intrinsically, inextricably – the group is more important than the individual. It always has been. It always will be. This is why a group like RH9 can exist. Because they co-exist. There’s a lesson in this for all sorts of people living outside of this amazing country. Traditionally, us “Westerners” have always trumpeted individual endeavor and, while that is well and good, the Japanese continue to operate on a different wavelength. Without it, a group like RH9 would never have been created, not to mention, stand the test of time.

"NAYSAYERS SUGGEST THE TUNING INDUSTRY IS ON THE DECLINE IN JAPAN, BUT THE RECORD-BREAKING TURNOUT QUICKLY PUT A CORK IN THAT ARGUMENT."

2015 TOKYO AUTO SALON Story & Photography by Adam Zillin THE TOKYO AUTO SALON IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST EVENTS of the year, with loads to see and do. The 2015 edition was no different. This year was even bigger than the last. Naysayers suggest the tuning industry is on the decline in Japan, but the massive, record-breaking turnout of 309,649 people quickly put a cork in that argument. The tuning industry in Japan isn’t on a downward turn, but rather on an upward swing. THE LATEST TRENDS, FULL THROTTLE

What is also very clear to see is that certain patterns have definitely emerged over the last few years. Specifically speaking, in the way the show (and it’s participant layout) is arranged. Notably, the Euro tuners took up the bulk of the east hall once again, while the hardcore Japanese builds (and builders) took up the west. It's ironic, when you think about it. Around the center hall, it was a little bit of a free-for-all with major auto manufacturers, brand producers, tire suppliers, niche shops and small-time tuners vying for attention. There was also the new edition of the “Tuning Legends Arena” in the event hall, where some of the greatest names in Japanese tuning proudly showcased their creations, old and new. If the tuning industry in Japan is likened to a varied and colorful selection of fruit on a platter, the TAS is the supercharged MixMaster that whips it into a heady smoothie bursting with vitality. The D1 was, of course, back in the event arena to do tandem demo stunts for a five-deep crowd, which included the world’s most expensive drift car: OTG and Imamura’s Nascar V8-powered Lexus LF-A. Sanctity or sacrilege? You be the judge. That said, one overriding impression hit home very clearly as I walked the halls on the strictly “insider only” Thursday set-up and soaked in the frenzy that is the weekend free-for-all...

Wheels. Naturally, they were everywhere. You name the manufacturer, brand, color, design or size and the TAS had it covered. I can’t remember the last time I saw this many wheel manufacturers at any previous “salon.” There were literally dozens and dozens of manufacturers on display. Many, like the foreign owned Forgiato stand, with its baby blue C7 Vette on point, had dozens of individual designs to ogle at. Forgiato, as many know, is the go-to brand for widebody tuner Liberty Walk. Speaking of widebodies, Kei Miura, the mastermind behind Rocket Bunny, showed that the over fender movement is not slowing down, with incarnations of the kits being designed one after another and applied to an increasingly diverse variety of chassis codes. What started out with 180SXs and S13 Silvias only a few short years ago has now become a global phenomenon, and the cash cow is being milked for all it’s worth. I personally draw a very firm line at cutting away exquisitely crafted sheet metal in order to stick FRP over fenders on a bull or a horse, but that’s just me. Or is it? As ostentatious (and, in some cases, outlandish) as many of the large displays were, the impression implied was that wheels have become the single-most influential modification any consumer of automotive modifications can make for their car in recent times. This is just as important a consideration for manufacturers of wheels as it is for respective brand managers looking to make their profit margins fatter in the Japanese market. Not to mention, for the consumers who love the increasing variety to choose from.

The fight for traction and market share, wheel-wise, will be fiercely fought this year and in years to come. There will be casualties on all fronts. Some brands will survive, while others will fall by the wayside. One thing is certain: millions of consumers, myself included, are sick to death of the “form > function” argument, so those who survive in this tempestuous wheel market will be the ones who deliver products of the highest possible standard. What is good to see though is that quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail (price of course being a factor) are what consumers seem to be looking for – especially in wheel selection – and, while the tried and tested brands like Rays and Enkei will always be hallmarks, there is a definite swing toward foreign brands that possess the same quality, but with different styles, price points and applications. There was literally something for everyone when it came to new kicks. Indeed, because manufacturing processes have advanced so quickly in the past few years, the gap between the haves and have nots, quality wise, is widening. This is why I was convinced that, not only has the diversity of wheel manufacturers increased at the 2015 TAS, quality had also taken a big step. It seems, for all intents and purposes, that taking the “cheap route” on wheels just isn’t an accepted practice anymore. As they say, quality over quantity. Naturally, if you haven’t ever visited the Tokyo Auto Salon, you are definitely missing out. I logged more than 30 miles on foot just traversing the halls over the four days, and the hot springs I went to at the end of each day were a welcome relief. Was I tired? Damn right I was. Am I looking forward to 2016 already? Damn right I am! Are you coming?

FURIOUS 7 LOOKING BACK AT WHAT WILL MAKE THIS THE BEST FAST AND THE FURIOUS YET. THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS IS ONE OF FEW MAINSTREAM movie titles that the tuning community holds dear to its hearts. The latest film, Furious 7 will be even moreso, not only because it promises to be the hardest-hitting chapter of the series, but because it also marks the final title with Paul Walker, a.k.a. Brian O’Conner. For that, it gives us all the more reason to watch in amazement what this franchise has become. Vin Diesel (Dom), Walker and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Agent Hobbs) return to lead cast favorites Michelle Rodriguez (Letty), Jordana Brewster (Mia), Tyrese Gibson (Roman), Chris “Ludacris” Bridges (Tej), Elsa Pataky (Elena) and Lucas Black (Sean) and a slew of international action stars including legends Kurt Russell and Jason Statham. Following the success of Fast and the Furious 6, the crew plans full well on taking that momentum to the big screen once again, for the latest – but perhaps not the last – chapter of the film that defines our culture. Will we find out who killed Han? What’s the story behind the new villian? What happens to the series’ biggest character, Brian O’Conner? There are plenty of questions that we can’t wait to find out, and plenty of memorable moments upcoming, so let’s take a look at some facts and the cast’s favorite moments that make The Fast and the Furious so great. GET THE FULL PICTURE

INSTAGRAM.COM/PASMAG

FAVORITE MOMENT ON SET:

FAVORITE CAR OF THE SERIES:

Tyrese Gibson: My favorite moments are between takes, when jokes are flying and we’re just bonding as a family and doing what we do on set. We pride ourselves on being a family on and off camera. Showing up to support Furious 7 is probably going to be one of the most important moments. Instead of us looking at it as an opportunity to finish the movie, it became a real responsibility on behalf of Paul Walker. We hope to make [a lot of people] proud, internationally, around the world.

Vin Diesel: Every car that I’m in speaks to and represents the character of Dom Toretto. But my all-time favorite car would have to be the black Charger. It was originally [Dom’s] father’s car, so it’s a connection of Dom Toretto to his past. Each film produced another wonderful piece of machinery, and anyone who loves Mopar will love any of the cars associated with Dom Toretto.

Jordana Brewster: It was on Fast and the Furious 5, it was shot in Puerto Rico, and it came as a surprise. I remember getting to work that day and seeing a harness in my trailer and said, "Why is there a harness in my trailer? What am I going to be doing today?" It turned out I had to jump off a building. On the same day, I slit my hand open, and I remember being like, "You can super glue it," and I was really trying to make myself look cool in front of Paul, and he was like, "She’s being really tough." He was really proud of me. That stunt was really special to me because Paul was so patient and sweet and endearing, and taught me how to do it properly so I didn’t look like I didn’t know what I was doing...I felt like I earned my stripes on that day.

Michelle Rodriguez: [The Charger] is just an iconic symbol of that loyalty to the American muscle car. I think it just symbolizes the entire franchise in one car. Paul Walker (from 2013): [Of my own cars in the series], I really like the 2JZ in the Supra. I love that motor, it's a lot of fun. The Supras are a f*ckin' kick in the pants. I finally got one — I got a '95, a white one with really low miles — it's got under 30,000 miles on it. It's all stock. I'm so tempted to build that thing up because that one was really fun. Remember how ridiculous they looked with those wide body kits on the Supras? They looked mean! That car is really, really — that's a fun car. The RB26 in the R34 is a really fun motor, although super temperamental; not nearly as reliable as the 2JZ. But an RB26, whether it's a R32, R33 or R34 Skyline is a really fun car.

BEST FIGHT SCENE: Ludacris: The best fight scene in all of the Fast and the Furious movies – the Rock vs. Vin Diesel. It was like Godzilla versus King Kong. That was the first time you saw a little bit of a kink in [Toretto’s] armor. Vin Diesel: The fight that I take the most pride in is Dom and Hobbs in the Fast and the Furious 5. Breakaway walls, glass shattering – it was more than just physically exhausting, it was emotionally exhausting. It took us a week to film that, all day. The whole crew played a role in creating this fight sequence by creating the right environment. I remember Dwayne Johnson – who has had a professional career in wrestling – at the end of the week saying this was the most exhausting fight that he’s ever been a part of. Michelle Rodriguez: [Dom vs. Hobbs] is my favorite fight scene in the franchise. I’m just so in love with watching the two beasts go at it! I thought it was iconic when they were doing it, and now that it’s done, I still think it’s the best.

FAVORITE LOCATION: Vin Diesel: There are so many great locations, so it’s really hard to pick a favorite location. There have been places that we’ve shot, like Rio, London, Puerto Rico, and then there have been those locations that have had very significant meaning; the Dom Toretto garage, and the Toretto house are significant places in our story – so they both have a special meaning for me, as both an actor and a producer.

FURIOUS FACTS

Thought you knew everything there is to know about FnF? How about these facts...

MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE: Paul Walker (from 2013): I just like to work hard, to be honest with you. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, I want to work hard — I want to feel good about what I'm doing. If I believe in what I'm doing, then I'm bringing the good, that's it. When I start wondering, or when I start questioning, when I start doubting — that's not the environment I want to be in. Especially when you're surrounded by people who are committed to the cause, it's pretty bitchin'. You're always one-upping, doing better, bringing a little more. Obviously the payoff that you're hoping for at the end of the day is that the fans are going to go (see the movie) and they're going to give it a stamp. That's all that matters, is the people that have been watching this franchise, especially for the last 10 or 12 years — if they're happy with what we've done, that's when I'm really stoked. I can go to sleep at night just knowing that I've done the best I can, but I'm not going to lie, when they appreciate the hard work that I've done, there's nothing better. That's just the rainbow sprinkles on top of the frosting. It's a great feeling and we've been fortunate enough to experience that more than a handful of times with this. We keep going out and people are like, ‘F*ck ya, bring us another one!' That's a pretty damn good feeling when people appreciate what you've been doing.

KUHL RACING’S CUSTOM CARVED GT-R PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM ZILLIN

KUHL RACING IS KNOWN FOR THEIR NUTTY PAINTJOBS AND OVER-THE-TOP AGGRESSIVE BODY STYLINGS. KUHL’s GT86, which was shown off at last year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, sported a silver metallic paint with engraving from ARTIS. This “3D Ultimate Engraving Metal Paint” technique was used on an R35 GT-R for 2015’s iteration at TAS, but this time things got wilder. The Love Lark “Aero Monster” kit was patterned with scales, crisscrosses, stripes, and even a floral design on the bulging front fenders. It’s not paint, and it’s not carving. So, what is it? Intaglio printing. A surface, shaped to the curvature of the car’s panel, is carved with the pattern that will be shown. The carved surface, which is pretty much a stamp at this point, is pressed onto the panel of the car while it’s painted to give the effect. The same technique is used on money and those fancy business cars with embossed fonts, just on a much smaller scale. ARTIS has this down to a fine art. And you thought custom engraving your grandmother's iPad she doesn’t know how to use was impressive… FILL 'ER UP

FORD RELAUNCHES RS BADGE WITH ON POINT AWD FOCUS KEN BLOCK CONSULTED. KEN BLOCK TESTED. Ken Block drifted Ford’s new rally-worthy Focus RS through a gymkhana-style obstacle course in front of a live crowd at its debut in Cologne, Germany – the site of the first RS debut and the Ford 15M RS in 1968. The Focus RS outputs more than 315 horsepower through a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost with upgraded cooling, cylinder heads, gaskets and block liners, but its all-wheel-drive technology is what really captures the highlights. It features torque vectoring front-to-rear and side-to-side, controlled via dual clutch packs on either side of the rear axle. As much as 70% of torque can be distributed to the rear, with 100% of rear wheel power able to be sent to either side, all measured at 100 times per second. Sheer awesomeness. Block also pushed for the manual six-speed – the only available transmission – making this a Focus we really, really want to see in GRC, and perhaps even WRC competition.

TIRE STENCILS ARE THE BOMB

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KC IMAGE, CHAD DONOHOE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KC IMAGE

THESE DAYS, WHEELS ARE A BIG DEAL. They’re a build in themselves. Three-piece construction, with a custom finish and bolted together with powder-coated hardware that accentuates the other color choices. Different colored lug nuts - some complimentary, others used to stand out – are also a huge part of a wheel build. Now, it turns out that spikes have taken the top spot for custom wheel accessories. Spiked lugs aren’t exactly new. They’ve been available for the truck market for a while, and aftermarket companies have been making cheesy spiked lug nut covers for years. Specialized companies like Downstar, have started making spikes for the import crowd that don’t look cheap or ridiculous on your wheels. If you’re really into it, you can get air valve stem caps or even carry the trend into the engine bay with spiked bolt replacements for certain components. Are you getting the point? If you’re interested, you can hit up Downstar and their Bolt Boys division for all your spiked needs on downstarinc.com.

YOU PROBABLY HAVE SPRAY PAINT IN YOUR EYES if you haven’t noticed the tire bombs going on at shows or on your favorite builds. Large, white letters spell out the tire manufacturer’s name or maybe even a club moniker or motto. As usual, this is something that started in motorsport and eventually trickled down into the modified scene. One of its most notable uses would be on RWB Porsches. Many of Nakai’s creations have an “Idlers” logo spray bombed on the sidewalls of the tires. These stencils are pretty cheap and can be ordered through certain tire manufacturers and aftermarket companies in the proper size for your rubber. To get the words on the wall, you’re going to need to determine if you have a peel-off stencil, or an old fashioned one. The classic ones can be taped on the tire and sprayed with spray paint or primer, then removed after it’s dry. A peeloff is applied like a decal: Stick, peel for access to the stick-on stencil (use tape for extra stick if needed), spray your paint, and peel off the stencil when dry.

“When it comes to tuning your system, there isn’t much the DSP PRO can’t do. It features independent channel configuration, nearly infinite adjustable highand low-pass crossovers, various crossover alignments and even a custom user-made alignment. The unit also offers extensive equalization, level control for each channel and digital signal delay. The ability to connect an optional microphone (MTK1), and included RTA function will be a huge plus for many car audio competitors.”

“The goal of the MLK 1650.3 system is to provide a wide bandwidth output with a natural timbre. To achieve this, FEA simulations (Finite Element Analysis) were performed on the midrange woofer and tweeter, followed by extensive in-vehicle listening sessions to achieve the design team’s desired results. When the engineering work was completed, a new surround-to-basket attachment system was created, called “Boundary Free Surround.” The method of attaching the surround means a larger cone surface, which we all know moves more air. The surround itself is manufactured from pure IIR butyl rubber for excellent mechanical and thermal stability.”

“In the sealed enclosure, the performance of the 7512-22 certainly doesn't disappoint. The very bottom of the audible register is easily apparent, as evidence by easily reproducing the subdued kick drum in Livingston Taylor’s Grandma’s Hands. This is a listening test I perform frequently, as many woofers fail to reproduce these extremely low frequencies at normally audible levels. Switching to some well-recorded rock and roll, I play Dire Straits’ Heavy Fuel and Marc Cohen’s Walking in Memphis. The bass on both tracks sounds clean and natural, with good timbre and very little overhang. The plucked bass sounds fat and round as it should. Bass heavy tracks like the Pussycat Dolls’ Don’t Cha and Yello’s Oh Yeah are reproduced with convincing authority, and the MTX woofer shows no signs of stress or bottoming, even though my amp is driving it at the full rated power.”

“The DVA6 is equipped to playback virtually any type of media including DVD, VCD, CD, MPEG4, MP3, WMA, and the usual variants. It includes an AM/ FM tuner, multiple auxiliary inputs, and has full Bluetooth connectivity. “Big deal,” you say. “A lot of head units do that.” Yes, but rather than just another app-centric head unit that revolves around requiring your smartphone for operation, the Rydeen DVA6 is an actual Android-powered multimedia receiver. Because the unit has its own special automotive version of the Android OS built in, it’s automatically Google centric!”

SOUND ADVICE

WITH GARRY SPRINGGAY

Real world questions from readers like you! Have a question about car audio or electronics? Send it to us at letters@pasmag.com!

Q: Hi. I have a question that I have not been able to find an answer for, and everybody tells me something different. I’m 19 and my car is a 2008 Chevy Cruze. I have had a good system in my car for two years, over 1,000 watts, and no problems. About a month ago I bought some cheap and cool LED lighting kits off the Internet. The kits include LED strips that can change color and can be set to flash with my music, which my girlfriend loves. They also can be dimmed and turn on and off with the dome lights. Very cool! But ever since I put these LEDs in, something is wrong with my amp or speakers. When they flash or I turn them to full bright, or sometimes even when they change colors, now my speakers have this loud buzzing noise. If I shut the stereo off, the buzzing goes away, so I guess it’s the amp. Can you tell me what is wrong with my amp or what I need to do to get rid of the buzzing?

Otthman R. – NYC, NY

A: Hello Otthman, thanks for the letter. What fascinates me about your question is that until you installed the LEDs, your audio system had no buzzing noise, yet now you blame the amplifier? This doesn’t quite make sense my friend, but it is a common reaction when the latest and greatest modification to your ride causes a problem. We don’t want to admit that the new thing we installed is the issue, so we look to blame something else. In your case, it’s probably worse since your girlfriend likes the LEDs so much. I still remember the influence a happy girlfriend had on me when I was your age, so I won’t be too tough on you. Your buzzing problem is caused by the way the LED lighting is controlled. Rather than adding resistance to lower the voltage like we would do with a regular bulb, most LEDs are controlled by something called PWM. This stands for pulse width modulation, which basically means a method of rapidly switching your LEDs on and off controls the perceived brightness. PWM controllers work at a fixed frequency, and change the “on” time of the current going into your LEDs. For example, take an LED that is lit at the rate of 50 times per second. If it was on and off for equal periods of time it would be on for 0.01 seconds and off for 0.01 seconds. This is called a duty cycle. But when you look at it, the LED will ap-

56

PASMAG

pear to your eye to be on constantly at a fixed brightness. It appears always on because it’s switching faster than your eyes and brain can notice. Now if we change the duty cycle to on for 0.0025 and off for 0.0075 seconds, the LED would still appear to be constantly on, but only one-quarter as bright. This is how PWM circuitry controls the brightness of lighting. Your buzzing problem most likely comes from a poor power supply design in the PWM controller. When the transistors in the controller are switching on and off, they can cause noise to be fed back into the vehicle’s electrical system, or in extreme cases, radiated noise can be picked up by the RCA cables. First, determine where the noise is entering by disconnecting the RCA cables from the amps inputs. If the noise is gone, move your RCA cables as far away as possible from any and all of the LED wiring. If the noise is still there with the RCAs disconnected, it’s entering via the vehicle’s power wiring. If you want to prove to yourself this is the problem, simply disconnect the LED power and ground from your car, and temporarily power the LED system with a separate battery (like a motorcycle battery). The noise will be gone because it has no way of getting into your vehicle’s power wiring. The bad news is that correcting this problem is quite difficult, unless you can live without the LEDs. You could try using a power filter on the input of your amplifier, but make sure it’s rated for the maximum current draw of your amp. More than likely this won’t help much anyway, due to the relatively low frequency nature of the noise. You can also try sourcing the power for your LEDs to a different spot and changing the ground path. In some cases this will help, but probably won’t totally eliminate the issue. The best way to fix this problem is to find different LED lights that use a better power supply design – which aren’t going to be cheap. Good luck with your lights, and your girlfriend! Q: Hi, I am a long time subscriber to the magazine and I read every issue cover to cover. I have never written for help before, but I have a problem that seems like no one can fix. I drive a 2009 Ford F-150 four-door pickup with a Pioneer AVH P3300BT, a Pioneer GM-D9500F amplifier and two pairs of Polk db5251 component speakers. I also

Facebook: garry.springgay Website: cogentaudiolabs.com

have a Memphis MCX 1.1100 sub amp driving an Alpine SWS 12-inch woofer. I installed everything myself, and I think it sounds great most of the time. The problem is my amp cuts out sometimes, but only when I go around a left hand turn. If I drive in a straight line, everything is fine. But if I make a left hand turn, the coaxials cut out on the right channel. When I go straight again, the music comes back. I have had the radio out twice and rewired the amp. The problem still happens. Help!

Roger R. – via email

A: Hi Roger, thanks for being a loyal reader. It’s nice to know all the late nights and hard work that goes into PASMAG is being appreciated! Your problem might sound weird to some techs, but when you’ve crawled under the dash of as many cars as I have, it’s actually something I’ve seen several times before. It sounds to me like the problem is not in your radio or the amplifier. Based on what I’ve seen in the past, I’m willing to wager you installed the crossovers for those Polk speakers inside of each door. And I’m also going to bet that you didn’t insulate the connections after you screwed down the wires to the Polk crossovers. It sounds to me like you were in a hurry (or just didn’t think about it) when you installed the speakers and crossovers. The condition you describe where the sound cuts out on one side and then comes back is typically the amplifier going in and out of protection mode. It sounds very much to me like something happens when you make a left turn that causes a channel on the amp to become shorted and engage the protection. Maybe a crossover slides into something, or is held against something by the G-force of the turn. Then, when you straighten out the truck, the crossover moves away from whatever it’s touching and the amp recovers and plays normally. Since we know what side protects, you should remove the door panel(s) from that side and check the installation integrity of the crossovers. Remember: you can’t just drop these in the bottom of the door and hope for the best. If this was my problem to fix, I would re-do the mounting of all four crossovers, making sure they were securely fastened in place. Then you should prevent this from ever happening again. Good luck to you!

CABE'S CORNER

BY CABE SIPES

the audacity to say my build wasn’t impressive. Let me stop right here and point out problem number one; which is being overconfident and not listening to your customer. Okay, back to my misplaced outrage. I immediately messaged him back letting him know I was on my way so we could go over the problems. As soon as I walked in and looked at the vehicle, I realized I hadn't let the paint cure long enough. It had pin-holed everywhere. I figured that was the problem. Although it sucked, I was going to have to repaint the whole thing. At least it wasn’t the actual build he hated, or so I thought. He explained that the paint looked bad, but he also didn’t like the amp rack. He wanted more lights and TVs. I couldn't understand how this went from “Go crazy and build anything” to all of these items he wanted. Then I heard the words that made me realize my mistake. My client sells cars and informed me that he was going to try and sell the car I built. The problem is, I didn’t build him a sellable car, I built him a show car that would need to be maintained by me if there was ever a problem. Once I realized he was going to be selling the vehicle, I knew I had to take it back and completely rebuild the entire install - for free. So, two weeks later and a near $3,500 loss, the vehicle was completed and ready to be sold. Let me repeat that, a $3,500 loss to my shop. If you just read that and said to yourself, “Screw that!” then you should stop working on cars. That $3,500 was the price for my pride and to keep my client happy. If you’re not willing to admit you were wrong and make it right, you won’t last very long dealing with the general public. Instead of focusing on the negative of the situation, let’s explore why I cost myself that much loss and trouble. What was missing from my mental tool bag?

COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN Don’t overlook your most important tools As an audio fabricator, I spend most my time working with my tools and my imagination, but one of the most important tools to have is good communication skills. This month I'm talking about something that I have recently dealt with firsthand. I was hired to build a vehicle for a client who runs a car dealership, and we never really discussed anything about the build other than the vehicle and the price. Actually, his exact words were, “Do whatever you want, go crazy with it, just make it visually cool.” With that in mind I did just that, and built a vehicle that to be shown. I dropped the vehicle off, proud of myself for another job well done and planned on following up with the client in the morning. I was on my way to see him when I received a message that said, and I quote, "Not real impressed with the build.” In the 20-plus years I have been building cars, I can count on one hand the number of people who didn’t like the finished product. That being said, I had grown quite arrogant and was outraged that he had

GUIDING YOUR CUSTOMER My first mistake was assuming my customer and I have the same definition of crazy and cool. I personally love loud bass and big shiny sub boxes, but I found out later my client likes lights and TVs. When we first be-

Untitled-4 1 CabesCorner.indd 2

gan discussing the vehicle and the build, I should have had a pen and paper, writing down ideas and suggestions from my customer. I needed to be his guide in this crazy aftermarket world and I failed to lead him. If I had asked the right questions like, “Are you selling this vehicle?” then I would have avoided this entire situation. In my years of confidence and experience, I had forgotten the simple art of asking and listening.

ASK QUESTIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BUILD Since this situation occurred, I have adopted my old ways of designing a build with a customer. In the past, I used a handy cheat sheet that addressed all the questions I would need answered to build the right type of car for my customer. This cheat sheet has the standard name, vehicle, address, etc. you would normally find, but then I had my own personal questions that would narrow down my customer's "type." An example would be: “Is the customer male or female?” This may seem like a silly question, but if I told you that I could tell if the person that drives a car is male or female just by looking at the radio, would you believe me? We did a study on this years ago at Best Buy and 90 percent of all female drivers will turn down the treble on the radio, while males will turn it up. The reason for this is because women are typically more sensitive to high frequencies. So if my customer is a female, instead of mounting the tweeters in the A-pillars or high on the dash, I might install them off-axis from her ear. Another question is: “Do you like your radio to dim at night or do you like it bright?” This question will help me decide whether I should put lighting in the foot wells and interior. If they like it dim then they are

2015-02-02 2:29PM PM 2/20/2015 1:01:09

probably sensitive to light when driving at night. The last thing you would want to do is add a bunch of LEDs in the cabin that might distract them. One of the other strange questions I ask is: “Do you have sinus problems?” This may seem way out there, but many people who have never had a full system in their car have no idea what the experience is like and, if they have sinus issues and I install four 15-inch subs, the experience will not be pleasant. You can have good bass without the pressure, so knowing the answer to that question will help me build them a system they can enjoy. At the end of the day there is no such thing as too much information, so ask your customer anything they are comfortable answering. WHY THE WEIRD QUESTIONS? Have you ever been tricked into realizing something about yourself through questions that were completely unrelated? That’s what I’m doing with these types of questions I ask my customers. If you have ever asked a customer what size subwoofer they want, and how many they want, without also asking them what type of music they listen to, you are doing them a disservice. Guide them to the answers you need because,

2:29 PM

CabesCorner.indd 3

most of the time, they don’t know themselves. Most people will not understand time alignment, crossover slopes, band pass, ported, FLAC, MHL and/or any number of the other technical details that need to be addressed. These are all terms we have come to know and, if you make same the mistake I did, it can cost you. My mistake was assuming and not listening. I assumed that I knew best and knew what the customer wanted. I didn’t bother myself with trying to explain what I was going to do; I was going to build it and watch him praise me for my greatness. Well, $3,500 later, lesson learned.

TEST REPORT

Clarion VX405

Multimedia Receiver Review For those who need a connected multimedia receiver so you don’t miss a single bit of your favorite content, Clarion has just introduced the all new VX405. Designed for full smartphone connectivity and loaded with all kinds of source capabilities – and a new, easier-to-use interface – the $499.99 (U.S. MSRP) double-DIN source unit should be a favorite for anyone who needs to interface with either an Apple or Android based smartphone.

Features and Functions The all-new VX405 is equipped with a high quality six-inch TFT touch screen display with crystalclear 800x480 resolution, as well as very good video playback. Fully equipped with a great AM/ FM tuner, DVD playback and compatibility for almost any type of digital media (MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC audio files, AVI, MP4, MPEG and 3GP video), it also offers built-in Bluetooth connectivity, including the usual profiles for hands-free telephony, as well as importing your phone book and

A2DP/AVRCP streaming. Still want more? The VX405 has SiriusXM and Pandora Internet radio, so you’ll never be looking for entertainment. Tagging of songs for future lookup on iTunes is also supported. Naturally, you’ll need an active data plan and a connection via 3G, EDGE or Wi-Fi, and the Pandora app loaded on your smartphone. What really makes this unit special is the HDMI input (cables and HDMI to MHL adapter if needed, are sold separately). Now you can mirror your smartphone and most of your smartphone apps directly on the VX405. This makes it possible to stream internet content, play games, or use the navigation app already in your phone. Your phone is still used to control the app, but the display is now shown on the screen of the VX405. You can even have your phone’s navigation app on screen and play your favorite audio source at the same time. The degree of connectivity you’ll experience depends on which smartphone you have, but the VX405 is compatible with most Android or iPhones. When it comes

to controlling your iPod/iPhone, you can either select the normal mode where all of the controls are done via the unit’s touchscreen, or with “Simple Mode” (the default mode on iOS), you can change songs and settings directly from your Apple device. It’s perfect when a passenger wants to play DJ on a long road trip. Speaking of road trips, the VX405 can be a savior with dual zone functionality and rear seat video output to keep the kids entertained. To that end, there are two auxiliary inputs, a 3.5-mm front panel mounted connection, and a dedicated pair of RCAs on the rear panel. Other rear connections include an input for a rear view camera and a steering wheel control adapter (sold separately).

Audio The audio section of the VX405 boasts a four-channel MOSFET amplifier with an advertised power of 19 watts per channel into four ohms, and three pairs (front/rear/ sub) of two-volt pre-amp outputs. Also included are selectable

frequency high- and low-pass crossovers, a three-band equalizer with nine adjustable frequencies, and a variable Q. Clarion’s Magna Bass EX loudness contour is also included to provide a richer, more pleasant listening experience at low volumes.

Controls and Ergonomics I’ll preface this section with an admission that for the last few years, I have been less than impressed with the Clarion user interface. Thankfully (and at long last) the VX405 is a complete departure from the old stuff with a completely updated and redesigned GUI. I’m very happy to report that the new interface is a vast improvement from the previous slow and clunky one. Thank you, Clarion. Frustration here is no longer an issue. Regular readers of my reviews know that I consider a head unit’s ergonomics to be a critical aspect in day-to-day use. The Clarion VX405 gets high marks in this regard, thanks to its rotary volume knob and a large screen with easy-to-understand and use icons.

TEST REPORT You can also customize the screen so that your most used sources are always at the ready, which reduces the time searching for the source you want. The new GUI allows you to access the settings menu icon from any screen, a handy and welcome feature for the “tweakers” out there. I have no problems when it comes time to pair my Android phone to the VX405. My iPod also connects readily. I test iPod connectivity with a Gen-4 Classic and iPod Touch. By using the appropriate cables, I’m able to get audio and video playback and the controls are intuitive. When I connect my Android phone via HDMI/MHL cables, I’m able to view apps such as CoPilot, YouTube and even my web browser on the head unit screen, all while audio plays in the background. All of these functions work easily and correctly the first time I try, which is more than I can say for the other units I tested recently.

Listening I move the VX405 into my listening room and connect it to my reference studio amplifiers and loudspeakers. I begin my listening session with the DVD of Joe Bonamassa’s Live at Royal Albert Hall. The sound and video quality is superb, as is the image on the 27-inch monitor connected using the VX405 video output. Everything works exactly as intended when I experiment with the EQ and crossovers. I use as many sources as possible during the listening: CD and DVD discs, my iPod, a USB drive, and the built-in tuner. Overall, the sound is pleasant and smooth. I experiment quite extensively with what may be a very useful feature for many users: Clarion’s Magna Bass EX. This is a volume dependent loudness contour, which can provide as much as 14 dB of boost when the unit volume is at the lower positions. This compensates for our ear’s inherent insensitivity at low frequencies and makes the music much fuller and richer sounding. As the volume increases, the unit automatically reduces the amount of boost to prevent unwanted boominess and woofer damage. As the volume reaches maximum, the EQ effect is automatically reduced to virtually zero. It’s a nice feature, especially when you typically play your music at lower volumes, but still want to experience the whole sound.

On the Bench

Conclusion

Moving back to the test bench and connecting to my trusty and brutally-accurate Audio Precision analyzer, I put the Clarion though the usual battery of tests. The VX405 measures as close as it possibly can to the published specs, which comes as no surprise after listening to it. THD measures low at around 0.02 percent and stereo separation is excellent, as is the signal-to-noise performance from all sources. Output impedance is a respectable 100 ohms. The built-in amplifier delivered just over 18 watts per channel, and the pre-outs also meet their two-volt rated output.

The Clarion VX405 offers a number of features and functionality for the price, particularly if you need smartphone integration and a very flexible audio platform. Whether you want the convenience of adding your phone apps to the screen, streaming audio, or dual zone entertainment to keep the back seat entertained, the VX405 can do it all. Slated for availability in Q2 2015, check one out at a Clarion dealer near you.

STAGE 1: Planning the Audio System

Regular readers of PASMAG already know that Technical Editor Garry Springgay is a bona fide audio geek and has been making a living in the audio industry for over 30 years. But what most of you don’t know is that he’s also a pretty serious gear head; just as much into cars and motorcycles as he is audio. He’s had more than his share of fun toys over the years. Since his teens, Garry has owned and built over 70 cars, including a Vega with a 427 cubic-inch big block in it, a Lotus Esprit, an early 911, several GM F bodies, a 1971 Hemi-powered Roadrunner and a handful of Corvettes including a ‘57, ‘67 and ‘77. He has held SCCA and NHRA racing licenses and regularly attends the Bondurant Driving School. Just as passionate about life on two wheels, he has owned over 30 motorcycles from 15 different brands, and currently has eight (or nine) in his garage. Also in Garry’s Garage is an assortment of more tools and equipment than some professional shops. How many people own a modern tire-changing machine? Garry does.

66

Before you can order up a trunk full of gear and start pulling your car apart, it’s always best to have a detailed plan. If you properly and thoroughly design your system, it can save you a lot of time, effort and, most importantly, money! Out of the gate, you have to be realistic about your goals and your budget. Take a couple of hours and walk around the car, looking at what you have as a starting point. Sit inside and think about where the speakers will go, what features you want in the radio, where the amps will go, and how things come apart, etc. Make notes, writing pertinent things down that you may forget later. (see photo 1) Be realistic. Don’t just hope that you will figure out a way to get six 15-inch woofers into your Mustang. Determine how much

space you can devote to the audio system, how much electrical load it will present to the vehicle, what you want it to sound like when you’re done, and finally, how much money you are willing to spend. If you have plenty of wants but are short on funds, consider doing the system in several stages that can be spread out over time to allow your bank account to be replenished between stages. You can break down a plan into several separate sections. For example: • Vehicle prep – sound damping, insulation, fixing existing issues • Source Unit – features, required specs • Amplification – size, current draw, cooling, features, power • Loudspeakers – type, proper fit, impedance, sound quality • Subwoofer – space required, type of enclosure, sound quality • Peripheral Electronics (ie. signal processors, rear view camera, radar detection, proximity sensors, custom lighting) • Wiring – gauge, routing, protection, harness building

Once I have the basic outline on paper, I begin to narrow down the features I want, how much power I need, what will fit, and so on."

Everyone will document these things differently, but you should do something to keep track of the plan. I begin with a simple sheet of paper, writing down my ideas and requirements as I go. (see photo 2) Once I have the basic outline on paper, I begin to narrow down the features I want, how much power I need, what will fit, and so on. You will use this as a sort of shopping list to keep from forgeting some critical feature that the “deal of the day” doesn’t have. This is also the time to take basic measurements of the vehicle’s interior and determine how much sound damping material you will need, what needs fixing or replacing (ie. carpet, moldings, trim, old switches that quit working 10 years ago) and other maintenance items. Write everything down in point form, and when you think the list is complete, jump online and determine a budget. This is the step that usually causes some form of compromise. Just be careful where you cut corners.

68

PASMAG

130_Gary_v2.indd 2

For example, when you think you just have to get your hands on that shiny new amp, don’t forgo the Dynamat just for a few more watts – you’ll be sorry. Beginning with a quiet cabin is one of the most important aspects of a truly pleasing system, and you will appreciate it even when the stereo is turned off. Don’t skimp on your wiring either. Saving $100 on a wiring kit can reduce the amplifier’s performance to something that was much less than $100 cheaper. The last thing you shouldn’t skimp on is your choice of speakers. The speakers are the single most important component when it comes to the ultimate “voice” of your car. Nothing else makes as big of a difference to a system’s sound as your speaker choice. You can safely trim the fat on amplifier power and features, head unit features, the number of subwoofers and limiting the add-ons. The existing radio may be good enough to drive your system. Maybe you buy a new, high-power head unit and forgo extra amplifiers for a while. Or maybe you can make do with 500 watts instead of 1,000. The audible difference is small, but those dollars saved can add up quickly. Once the gear has been selected and the plan adjusted for the budget, you can start getting into the nitty-gritty. Draw a rough outline of your vehicle on a blank piece of paper (make it large enough so that it takes up the whole page). You don’t need to be Chip Foose here – a basic outline is good. Draw where each piece of equipment will be mounted. Be neat, because this sheet will fill up fast. Once you have all the gear drawn in place, add connection points like the fuse box, battery, and ground points. Don’t assume where these are, look closely at the car and figure it out now – the time spent here will save you much more in the future. On a separate sheet, make a list of all the wiring that will be needed. How many wires go to each location? What gauge and what color? What can be run together in a harness, and what goes by itself? (see photo 3) Stay tuned, because in the next issue the plans unfold and the wrenches start turning. I’ll be stripping out the Vette’s interior and installing all of the sound deadening and extra insulation!

hen one is passionate about their craft, it is often said that they put a part of themselves into their creations. If it’s writing, maybe it’s their voice. If it’s art, maybe it’s their likeness. With cars though, it’s a lot of personality and a part of your spirit. Nowhere is this more apparent than with Wataru Kato’s “Kenmeri” Skyline. “Liberty Walk means ‘walking freely’,” Kato says. “Don’t let the rules prevent you from enjoying your free movement; enjoy what you love to do without bothering others in any way.” If you don’t know who Kato is, please educate yourself. Google it. Ask Jeeves if you really have to. Better yet, you can see an interview we did with Kato at the Tokyo Auto Salon last year on PASMAG.com. This guy really is in a league of his own. You can really see the personality that Kato injected into his GC111 Skyline. If you look at it dead-on, it looks like its splitter smile and tilted headlights give off

70

that same mischievous and playful face that its owner does. Maybe the bumper-mounted oil cooler symbolizes the cigarette that dangles out of his mouth. The rest of the car is outlandish, but in the best possible way, as one would expect from Liberty Walk. It’s modeled in the popular Japanese shakotan (extremely low) and kyusha (modified Japanese classic car) stylings for that throwback flair with a no-cares-given attitude. Partnering with Mizuno Works, Kato and his Crew at LBW really worked their magic. Sure, you could look at this hacked up vintage car and be mad about it, but could you really stay mad at it? Didn’t think so. Since shakotan was the main influence here, Kato’s Kenmeri is suitably super low. At its lowest point, it’s about five or six millimeters from the ground. Mizuno Works’ short stroke shocks provide peace of mind, knowing that the wheels aren’t going to throw off the fender arches when the car goes over a bump.

Kato isn’t very concerned about name brands when it comes to his personal cars, so you won’t find Work or Volks or BBSs beneath the overfenders – which are the widest Mizuno Works offers. Instead, you’ll find custom widened steel wheels. Measuring 14 inches around is the norm, but the 10-inch front and 13-inch rear widths are just what Dr. Kato ordered. Wrapped around the steelies are vintage Advan racing rubbers in 225/525 R14 and 245/525 R14 front and rear, respectively. These tires aren’t made anymore and no other manufacturer tackles those measurements, so until Kato can convince someone otherwise, the cracked and stretched Advans are here to stay. The rear of the Skyline is completely shaved down. No bumper, no recess for 72

a license plate; just smooth. Two Nissan Cherry taillights have been implanted and tilted to match the front. Just above those is Mizuno Works’ three-piece ducktail spoiler, adding to an already timeless silhouette. Under the hood, Mizuno Works outdid themselves. The factory L20 has been lifted and replaced with an L28 straightsix for higher output and more wail. The addition of a balanced crankshaft from an LD28, forged pistons and connecting rods from AS Watanabe, Kameari Engine Works camshaft, and some machining work have resulted in a 3.1L stroke up and some extra power under Kato’s foot. Inside the Kenmeri, you won’t find diamond-stitched custom seats or fancy headliners. The interior takes a heavy influence from Japanese endurance

racers and as such, is absolutely gutted. Aluminum and FRP paneling makes up what were once the door panels and dash. Under the custom dashboard is a Carrozerria head unit, which feeds tunes to Kato from behind via a pair of speakers of the same make. The steering wheel and seats are both competition models taken from other vintage Datsuns. A plethora of switches, lights and gauges, as well as a half cage that takes up residence in the rear, all give off that motorsports vibe. Those switches are also part of a unique start-up ritual that needs to be performed to wake the Kenmeri up it doesn't have a key after all. The steps on the piece of paper hanging from the dash are as follows: 1. Open the hood and turn on the battery. 2. Turn on switch two and “accelerate properly” to 2,500 rpm. 3. Turn off switch two. 4. Push the red button. That’s legit. By now, you’ve surely noticed the awesome photography by Phillip Awad. Now look at this layout and take out every image that’s set in the parking lot with the Ferris wheel in the background. Those almost didn’t happen. Somehow we found the Skyline, or maybe, it found us. “The Ignited event is happening and I was combing the event space for Kato and his crew,” recalls Awad. “I assumed the car would be there, but it wasn’t.” The Skyline was nowhere to be found because it was stuck. The rollout from SEMA caused an incredible

amount of traffic. Kato, his crew and the Kenmeri were waiting in gridlock for so long that the car ran out of gas! Not able to get the fuel the Skyline needed to run (it takes high-octane or “hai-oku”), the LBW crew was forced to push the car into a large, empty parking lot. “When I eventually found him, there was his Skyline, the Aventador, and a few of the people from his crew had their cars parked,” Awad continues. “I pulled one of the Don’t let the rules guys aside and asked prevent you from him if he could ask enjoying your free Kato-san if it was movement; enjoy okay to shoot his car. what you love to do Kato was 100 percent down to shoot, but without bothering when I asked to take others in any way.” it off the lot and go - Wataru Kato somewhere a little more exclusive, he put his hands up in the air and said, ‘No gas!’” Awad can’t really believe what he just heard, but shakes it off and suggests, “Well, why don’t we push the car and put it in front of the Ferris 74

wheel?” With ample parking space it was easy enough but, of course, a crowd had formed and started taking pictures and following the car. “At one point I’d say that there were 50 or so people just standing in front of the car,” says Awad. “I wouldn’t say it was mayhem, it was more like a party.” With all of his new friends there, he didn’t know how many good shots he’d get. In the end, he decided to just go with it. The atmosphere was great and it complemented Kato’s creation very well. We think so, too. “It was spur of the moment and I just gave up control,” smiles Awad. “Because Kato ran out of gas, I was able to find him in the Ignited lot. It was a fortunate series of events.” We say it was meant to be. A party setting in a parking lot after what seems like devastation is so fitting for Kato and his car. Just before this, Kato’s 458 was rear-ended. He simply got out, put on a headband and started screaming, “BANZAI!” This is a guy who makes the best of a bad situation. Kato’s Kenmeri is a work of passion and has just the right amount of him in it.

ife’s a journey, or so the saying goes. Cliché? Perhaps. But for many of us, getting to where you want to be is never a direct route. There are detours, stops and dead ends, but for those set on making it to their final destination, the ride is always worth it. Case in point: Rothsen Valdez and his GT-R. It’s one of the meanest and most intimidating wide bodies – let alone GT-Rs – we’ve ever seen. As one of the first of two Rocket Bunny Godzillas in North America, it’s most certainly the cleanest. The fit and finish on this GT-R is unlike anything we’ve seen since – well, remember our sideways issue with that Liberty Walk? Ya, this GT-R is so sharp we just had to put another one on the cover. But while this might look like a simple idea to put together a monstrous rocket-winged bunny, it’s really more like a diverse chronology that has culminated here.

See, automotive runs through Valdez’s veins. He grew up – and still lives – mere minutes away from one of North America’s greatest race tracks: Laguna Seca. The Fast and the Furious dropped, then 2 Fast 2 Furious, and for him, it was all about Brian O'Conner's R34. He was a kid getting his kicks off of hanging out with his friends until, at 15 years old, he found himself as a teenage father. “For the first time in my life, I held my son in my hands and said I have to change,” he says. “From that point on, I started focusing on school and just doing me, taking care of my girlfriend and my son.” It was at that point he decided it was now or never to pursue his passion for cars, and before long, he found himself

working as a detailer at a local Mitsubishi dealership. The Lancer Evo was his mark, but as a young kid supporting his family on a detailer’s salary, he knew where he was simply wasn’t enough. Sure, his Integra GSR was street tuned and he’d installed his own Turbonetics drag kit, but the car – and his salary – just weren’t where he wanted them to be. He was gaining a reputation in the street scene and surrounded by cars every day at work. The speed bug hit hard and he was digging his heels in deep. Hearing the conversation from his sales co-workers, Valdez saw the potential to grow within the company while earning a considerably larger salary and more freedom. Taking the step

at just 18, he decided to enroll in a unique opportunity offered by Mitsubishi that trained their new and existing sales team with the skills required to succeed. Like a new sponge, Valdez soaked up all the information and made some key contacts with his enthusiastic personality. “Mitsubishi was bringing these renowned trainers from all over the country,” he says. “I received priceless advice for nothing and I ended up working with them for two years, and that’s where I met Brian Verdin.” Verdin played a key role in this whole Nissan story. He knew Valdez’s skill, he knew the R34 was his dream and, as the previous manager at a Nissan dealership closer to Valdez’s home, he told

him to make a quick phone call to his partner, Jack Yasin. Within a month Valdez was rejoined by Verdin, and 10 years later he doesn’t have a single regret. When he made the move to Nissan, Valdez had already worked himself up to a gorgeous red NSX. Having tuned and owned a list of Honda's and Acura’s best platforms, he wanted to explore. Naturally, when he found out he could own an R35 GT-R for less than anyone else, it became his goal for the next level.

“I LOVED THE LOOK OF THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TWO OR THREE YEARS - AFTER ALL IT IS A SUPERCAR BUT I JUST FELT IT COULD BE MORE...”

“All my coworkers have race cars. We’re a whole dealership that revolves around race cars,” he says. “That’s the whole culture, the whole lifestyle. When we go to work, we don’t go because we want to work – we want to talk about cars.” Needless to say, within three years, he was off to the races. The money he saved on purchasing the car went straight into building his newly-dubbed “BLKHAMR.” Starting with performance, the Garrett GT30 turbo, AMS prototype intake pipes, Mishi hoses, TiAL blow-off valve, wastegate, T1 GTR fuel rail, AAM dual fuel pumps, AAM titanium exhaust, etcetera, etcetera were all installed by himself. His buddies at Equilibrium tuned the car, and on the first dyno pass on 91 octane and 18 psi he broke 520 horsepower at the wheels. Having too much fun with his new toy, they filled it with some E85 and hit as high as 618 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to pull the shine right off a gold brick – or rip apart a beautiful VR38DETT, but Valdez decided to play with fire. Thankfully – and miraculously – nothing happened, and he opted for a re-tune when he installed his new AMS intercooler, still pushing 712 enormous horses. Next up was the handling. 80

PASMAG

Black Hammer GT-R.indd 5

With the advances in suspension technology, Valdez took a jump off the deep end and put his monster on air. Namely a full AirREX digital system that is paired with Whiteline lower front and rear sway bars, which he says gives him the perfect amount of comfort and improved steering input for his daily commutes to the dealership, and more than enough stability for weekend track events. If you’re wondering how air suspension can translate all that power, his quarter-miles are done at 10.22 seconds and over 137 miles per hour. “I had the performance just where I wanted it,” Valdez says. “I loved the look of the car for the first two or three years - after all it is a supercar - but I just felt it could be more, so I started to look at doing something with the body. I’ve always been a fan of the Japanese culture, so I told myself this car has to be built around that. All of my previous builds have worked around that.” So, what were his options? He liked the Liberty Walk, but the rear over fender didn’t suit his taste. He knew that competitors’ kits would start hitting the market soon after, and that’s when he laid eyes on the Rocket Bunny. “I saw that and said ‘I have to have this.’” The look of the kit alone was

enough to fuel Valdez’s desire to complete his project. With the help of Darwin Wongkar and Josh V. from RSV Forged, the Rocket Bunny kit was ordered straight from the source, and their connections overseas had it expedited via air freight in just three weeks, rather than the typical three months. Diamond Autobody was responsible for setting the car up in just 60 days for its planned appearance at Wekfest San Jose, but Valdez wanted to make sure everything was done right. That meant blocking his car to ensure a proper ride, cutting the fenders higher to accommodate the lowered stance, and welding and reinforcing each cut and sealing everything, all while seamlessly integrating the Bunny kit to the existing WALD rear diffuser and ZELE carbon side skirts. Beating the clock, the car made it’s debut at Wekfest and was impeccable outside and underneath, sitting on silver Work Durandal three-pieces without any sponsor decals. Still, it was more than enough to capture first place ahead of the only other Californian Rocket Bunny GT-R, cementing Valdez’s legitimacy as having the hardest-hitting widebody GT-R on the streets. Everything was coming full circle.

82

PASMAG

Over the course of his builds, Valdez used Sonic MS - now RSV Forged - on a number of projects. Having helped him obtain the now award-winning Bunny kit, when the U.S. wheel manufacturer was deciding on a 2014 SEMA vehicle to showcase it’s premier product line, Josh V. didn't have to look far. RSV offered Valdez a set of self-designed one-off wheels, and he barely had to think before saying yes. It transformed his GT-R into the beauty you see in these pages, putting it among the custom wheel elite. Fittingly, his RSVs are gold. Check the SEMA coverage and you’ll see the coverage his car got. His Instagram page (@ r0thsen_GTR) has over 11,000 followers and his love for cars is obvious. Perhaps most impor-

tantly though, you’ll see he’s as much about his family as his builds. It’s been a long road, and the best part is that they’re his biggest supporters. So, how do you follow up one of the cleanest Rocket Bunnies on the continent? Remember that whole thing about The Fast and the Furious and the R34? Check out his Insta page and you might have a clue. It’s proof that hard work pays off and dreams can become a lifestyle. Keep the clichés coming.

n the late ‘90s Kenji Nishimura owned an Acura Integra like many of his friends. As easy as they were to modify, Nishimura decided to part with his in favor of something more unique. His next car, a Nissan S14 styled after a Japanese motorsport called “drifting” that had yet to hit the US at the time, was much more unique, until the marketing of the sport in the US made it far more popular than

2015-02-20 9:52 AM

Nishimura wanted. The Lexus GS300 caught Nishimura’s attention because of its comfort as a daily driver, and potential to be built into a cool VIP car. More than 10 years later, the car has evolved into the fully tuned VIP that Nishimura never knew possible. He had seen several VIP-styled cars on the Internet, but none were on the show circuit in the Pacific Northwest at the time. The initial

plan for the car included minor mods, but it had to remain functional as a daily driver. Like many cars, an intake and Tanabe Hyper Medallion exhaust were some of the first to go onto the 300. Later, an SRT ECU helped maximize the horsepower, followed by a Nitrous Express kit - squeezing the most horsepower out of the stock 2JZGE motor without having to boost or crack it open.

Nishimura slowly cleaned the engine bay and upgraded several parts. A Mishimoto radiator setup and transmission cooler, Hose Techniques silicone hoses and TRD oil cap have all replaced the old stock. Several pieces in the engine bay have been chromed or painted to clean up the overall appearance, highlighted by a custom airbrushed Sakura hood by Nishimura’s Team Menace teammate Walter Franco.

The interior has also evolved over the years to its current setup. “When I was deciding how to upholster the interior, I saw a lot of VIP cars that just had black leather or suede,” Nishimura says. “But I think black is too sporty and didn’t fit with the theme I was going for. I wanted to have a nice luxury look that was still plush, with a factory influence.” The tan leather and chocolate brown inserts with diamond stitching provide that mix of plush and OEM-plus that Nishimura was looking for. Accessories that include Anceltion curtains and side tables, a slew of Junction Produce pillows and covers, and JDM Toyota Aristo doorsills and emblems help trim everything out. Several wood grain panels replace the dated color-matched factory inserts, and an RX300 wood grain steering wheel and 5ZIGEN wood grain pedals tip off the luxurious feel. Like many VIP cars, Nishimura went with a complete air-based suspension setup to provide the low look for show, while keeping the drive quality Nishimura needed. Air Runner components produce the proper look and feel, and Dakota digital pressure gauges ensure that he’s riding level and balanced. Intec lower control and tie rods keep the alignment tidy and within spec.

A custom Explosion body kit was modified to Nishimura’s specifications, filling several openings and modifying the grilles to provide cleaner lines and a refreshed look. BOUGIE BUSHIDO One of the most elaborate changes to the car is in the trunk. Initially, Nishimura had the simple false floor subwoofer box built to allow for continued use of the trunk, as the car was still a daily driver at the time. Famed drifter Tanner Foust, who saw the car at a drifting event at Evergreen Speedway, approached Nishimura and the two drivers turned onto the topic of a serious audio system. Foust, already sponsored by Memphis Car Audio, helped get Nishimura going on his initial sponsorship deal toward bigger and better sound. Once a more substantial enclosure was built, it was filled with a pair of Memphis Audio M1 10-inch subwoofers, powered by an M-Class two-channel amp. Under the box, a second M-Class four-channel amp powers the

All inputs are controlled from the Sony in-dash DVD screen. The whole system not only sounds heavily upgraded, but it's neatly installed away from passenger sight. Tattoo artist Keahi Hooe airbrushed the demon and sunrise theme on the box with meticulous attention to detail. It's is a clean, well-rounded and awardwinning Lexus, and Nishimura couldn't be more proud of the journey he's taken to get the car to this point.

They’ve all mentioned Nishimura’s GS as a major influence in their decisions. As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and while it would be hard to imitate the unique style that Nishimura’s GS300 has, it’s easy to see that this car was built with decisive decisions and Nishimura’s vision.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE LONG BEACH 2015 Formula DRIFT Season Preview STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON

Formula D’s six-month layoff between the final event in October at Irwindale and the 2015 season opener at Long Beach in April can be a bit boring for fans. Outside of the occasional SEMA announcement, there’s rarely much news about changes or updates to your favorite driver or team. This year’s offseason has been low-key in many aspects, but there’s still a lot you need to know before the first rubber is laid on the Streets of Long Beach. As an avid fan, you likely know that this is the fourth consecutive season that Performance Auto & Sound (PASMAG) is bringing you the Formula D Fan Guide, so as an official partner, we often get the scoop on these changes before the season starts. Here’s a quick guide to get you up to speed!

Formula Drift has seen steady growth beyond the US border, and 2015 will see the series galavanting across the globe to rounds in Japan, Canada, and China for the final.

FORMULA DRIFT HAS GONE GLOBAL FOR 2015

This major announcement was actually made before the 2014 season, but for the first time since 2006, Formula Drift will expand beyond the seven-round US-based schedule they have run over the last nine seasons to crown a true world champion. Three additional rounds have been added, including Japan (June), Canada (September) and China for the November final. The top eight drivers in the series (along with any event winners who aren’t already in the top eight) will be transported – all expenses paid – to China for the final event. There will still be a US champion based on the seven events inside the lower 48, but these three additional rounds bring a new element to the championship chase. If you’re a superfan of the series, it’s time to update your passport!

NEW CARS TO DEBUT AT LONG BEACH

One of the most exciting off-season developments is the announcement of new cars. Both Daigo Saito and Robbie Nishida announced new cars at the SEMA Show in Vegas – a Nissan GT-R for Saito and an Infiniti G37 for Nishida. These drivers are moving away from their Toyota-powered Lexuses that they drove the past two seasons, which included an OEM championship in 2013. Essa’s move to the Roush Camaro marks a third driver who is not only shifting to a new car, but a completely new manufacturer for the 2015 season. We’ve heard mumblings of as many as six new cars on grid for Long Beach, but none of these could be confirmed at the time of publishing.

FORMULA DRIFT VENTURES TO ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD IN HOMESTEAD, FLORIDA

After a one-year stopover in Miami and three seasons in Palm Beach, Formula Drift heads to a new home in Florida this June. Providing a great showcase for the fans, the oval-based track is similar to New Jersey, Seattle and Irwindale. Numerous track improvements have occurred over the past year and will continue until Formula Drift’s arrival for the third round of the Pro 1 series and the first stop on the Pro 2 calendar. Vaughn Gittin Jr. won the inaugural event at Homestead last year, while Justin Pawlak won the inaugural event at Palm Beach in 2011. Perhaps a Mustang will take the trophy at Orlando’s first event this summer? Only time will tell...

FORMULA DRIFT CANADA SERIES IS ANNOUNCED – PRESENTED BY SCION

Over the past several seasons, Formula Drift has been building a relationship in the Canadian market. Drift Mania was an affiliate of Formula D for several seasons, providing FD licenses to top finishers in the series, and several FD demos have been held in Canadian cities – most recently in Montreal in September last year. For 2015, a four-event series will be launched under the Formula D banner, with the final event being run simultaneously with the Formula Drift World Championship round at Autodrome St- Eustache. This is a major step forward for Canadian drifting, and should help to develop skilled drivers and publicity for the next step. FORMULA D CANADA 2015 CALENDAR Round 1: June 21 – Autodrome St-Eustache Round 2: July 18 – Montmagny Autodrome Round 3: August 7-8 – Trois-Rivières Grand Prix WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND September 6-7 – Autodrome St-Eustache

ROUSH ENTERS FORMULA DRIFT WITH A CAMARO/ MUSTANG TEAM

Roush is synonymous with racing, and for the first time in Formula Drift, the famed builder will field a two-car team. The brand has worked with drivers like Justin Pawlak over the past few years, who will field a Ford Mustang, while 2013 champion Michael Essa will drive a Chevy Camaro. Together, they have amassed six event wins and 12 podiums in Formula Drift competition. Combined with the expertise of the Roush team, look for both drivers to be popping champagne at some point in the 2015 season.

WHAT CAR DO YOU OWN? I currently have two cars: 1989 Nissan 240SX for the track and 2005 Lexus IS300 as my daily. I love both of my beauties. They are used and set up for completely different purposes. I'm always changing and trying to make my track car the best it can be, which will never die out. As far as my IS300 goes, I try my best to keep up with the maintenance since it is an older chassis. They both handle well for what I need, but it’s my goal to one day build the IS300 for the track as well.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? My biggest goal is to be in the mainstream industry of motorsport spokesmodels as a pretty face who can also drive. I want to compete at the Pro-Am level within regional circuits, and I'd love to be a female driver for tire demos, stunt driving, etc. Another goal of mine is to attain a marketing position in the motorsport industry for an aftermarket manufacturer.
