ISSUE PREVIEW
WE ARE THE
CHAMPIONS!
I
f you couldn’t tell from the cover, we’re pretty excited about Anthony De Guzman and his one-of-a-kind Supra finally getting their cover. He’s the champ after all. Beating out all other competitors, he’s joins the ranks of Salik Zaki and his Scion xA from last year’s Tuner Battlegrounds Championship competition. Anthony isn’t the only one who’s eyed or eyeing a championship title in this issue, though. Our Formula Drift feature is Odi Bakchis’s Nissan S14, which is currently propelling him to the leader of the points board. Kendall White and his FR-S named “Stay Minty” by his fans is cleaning up at any and every show it stops at in and around the country within a country, Texas. See what went into making the seafoam green 86 the freshest out there. We also have four Tuner Battlegrounds hopefuls in this issue. Each of them won the #TBGLIVE competition at their respective shows and earned themselves a print feature, too. Will they chase the championship spot at SEMA in Las Vegas? Our in-house champ, Garry Springgay has been working like he’s competing as well. See some readers get their questions answered by the man himself in his Sound Advice Q&A session. If you’ve been holding out for your Project C6 fix, Garry has you covered. In this installment, he takes us through the wiring of his safety systems, as well as the construction of his woofer box. Not enough Springgay? He’s also been busy testing the latest and greatest audio products. A DSP-equipped amplifier and a summing device to mesh with your complicated OEM audio systems are on the menu this time around. Our trending section is bringing you the latest in the lifestyle, so make sure you get your fill there. We enlisted Rick Di Corpo to cover Waterfest 21, who brings us up to speed on what’s going on in Quebec with the Hellaflush law, and what’s being done to fight back. A quick, corrective note for our Japan Special issue. The article “How to Import a JDM Vehicle” incorrectly stated that Jeff Peabody imported and registered the Skyline R32. In fact, it was Kyle Erspamer who imported the vehicles along with author Ashley Barone. Mr. Peabody took the photo of the Skyline. Alas, thanks for picking us up and enjoy the issue! Be sure to let us know what you’re working on at letters@pasmag.com, we always love to see what you guys are up to. Who knows, maybe you could be competing in Las Vegas next year!

WATERFEST 21
RACEWAY PARK ENGLISHTOWN, NJ Taking place at Raceway Park, New Jersey, Waterfest attracts tens of thousands from all over North America to a two-day trade show that showcases over 100 of the very best vendors the industry has to offer. Back for 2015, Volkswagen Motorsport presented a whole lineup of modified Beetles, including the Red Bull GRC Beetle piloted by Tanner Foust. Waterfest veteran vendors APR, Revo and Unitronic were on-site battling out the war of the VW/Audi performance upgrades, while Underwraps Automotive, Bag Riders and Air Lift Performance took aim at slamming as many dubs as possible on air suspension. During Waterfest’s golden years, the spectators took it upon themselves to bring much of the burnout and reckless action of the controlled environment of a race track to the public roads of the surrounding neighborhoods. Naturally, this forced a police crackdown that left many wondering if Waterfest would survive. To cope with this pushback from the local community, Afterfest was created as an official after-party that’s filled with burnouts, low car limbo contests, DJs and live performances, and an invitation-only Show & Shine contest.

Understanding that keeping both vendors and spectators happy while putting on an entertaining show is no easy task. The folks at Waterfest have proven that in the competitive world of VW/ Audi car shows, the more smoke, sweat and sacrifice that gets put in, the greater the outcome at the end of the day.

Q: Hello, I am an installer for a small car audio shop in a rural part of northern Manitoba. We don’t get a lot of requests for super custom stuff, but I want to step up my game and learn a few new tricks. I have seen a lot of photos of trick looking subwoofer enclosures with curvy shapes. I want to learn how the pros get those amazing shapes and how much work it is compared to a typical MDF box. I would really like to see a how-to article in PASMAG that shows how to do this and a lot of photos would help! Jason K. - Manitoba, Canada A: Hello Jason, I also began my installation career in a rural town in eastern Saskatchewan, so I know where you’re coming from. Many of the “curvy” subwoofer enclosures you see photos of are made by stretching a fabric material over the basic structure and then covering the fabric material with fiberglass mat and resin. This is a good way to make a strong, good looking enclosure, but working with fiberglass is something that takes practice to get right. It also requires either working outdoors or an extremely well ventilated shop, as the resin fumes are strong and can cause discomfort for some people. The glass fibers can also cause irritation, and you need to wear a respirator when working with the stuff. If all that sounds too intimidating right now, another way to add a curved surface to a subwoofer enclosure is to use a special type of plywood that is designed to bend easily in one direction. This material is known by several trade names: Bend N Ply, Wigglewood, Bendy Board, etc. When I use this material, I buy it in either 0.375-or 0.5-inch thickness and use two layers of it glued together. And, to answer your request for an article with photos, in an upcoming issue I will be using this flexible material as part of the subwoofer enclosure for Project C6. So stay tuned for a complete how-to on making a subwoofer enclosure with some curves.

Q: I work in a very busy shop near NYC. The installers here are paid a commission for each piece we install, so we need to get the cars in and out of the shop as fast as possible. We have a lot of problems with alternator noise in the systems we install and it takes too much time to fix the noise. I would like to know what is the best brand and series of RCA cable to use to get rid of the alternator whine. Rayvon T. - NYC, USA A: Hi Rayvon. Thanks for the question, but I’m afraid you might not like my answer. I have been installing car audio systems for almost 40 years, and I can tell you that there is no magic brand or series of cables that is going to solve your problems. I can also tell you that I have made a lot of loyal customers over the years by fixing problems caused by shops like the one you work for. Yes, you can do your best to minimize noise by using a high-quality brand of twisted pair signal cables, but nine times out of 10, alternator noise problems are caused by improper or hurried installation practices. You mentioned your shop is very busy, and you prioritized getting cars done in a hurry. To me, that is a huge red flag. When we’re in a hurry, we tend to take shortcuts. Stuff like not taking the time to run the RCA cables as far away from the power cables as possible, and making sure that when they do get close together, they are as much at right angles to each other as possible; or not properly grounding the amplifier and using a seat bolt or other such location as a ground; or not taking the time to remove paint and properly use a star washer on your grounds; or using multiple ground points simply because it’s convenient and faster. All of these will contribute to noise problems, and the time you saved taking the shortcuts will be lost and even more will be spent doing things over. Remember, if you don’t have time to do it right, you certainly won’t have time to do it over. To minimize alternator noise problems you should always use high-quality twisted pair cables, run the low level signal as far away from high current power cables as possible, use a good ground point and ground everything to the same spot, make sure the vehicle’s battery is in good condition, and use equipment that has proven to be quiet when correctly installed. When you are very busy, following the above ground rules will go a long way to saving you time in the long run and preventing comebacks and complaints. I’ll leave you with one more quote to consider, “Do what is right, not what is easy.” If you decide to take my advice, I’ll guarantee that your comebacks and complaints will go way down, you’ll make as much money or more than you do now and, when you go home at night, you’ll know that cars you worked on were done properly and safely. What’s that worth?

Arc Audio SRI Review
Many new vehicles come with various features such as OnStar or navigation systems that make head unit replacement difficult and not your best option. If you have been struggling for an inexpensive solution to interface an aftermarket audio system to your car’s OEM system, your struggles are over. From the clever folks at Arc Audio comes the SRI, an OEM integration device that is specifically designed to level match and sum two- and three-way OEM systems to a fullrange output. With a host of other OEM integration related features, at a very affordable $279 USD, the SRI will likely be a popular choice.
Features The Arc Audio SRI is a sixchannel Signal Restoration and Integration module, capable of summing three separate stereo inputs to a single pair of stereo outputs. Included in the SRI circuitry is a signal sensing turn-on circuit for use with OEM systems that do not have a separate 12-volt trigger lead. In addition to the six channels of high-level input, the SRI features an auxiliary input for easy interfacing with a different source, like your personal music player or gaming console. The included wired remote control provides main aux switching control, as well as level control of the aux source.
BY GARRY SPRINGGAY
Connections to the high-level inputs are made using removable four-wire connectors, and they are clearly marked for channel and polarity. Summing of OEM signals is accomplished via simple summing switches. To correct for the occasional OEM signal that is intentionally wired out of polarity from the factory, a pair of 0-180 “phase” switches are also provided. The SRI is a flexible product and provides several different system configuration possibilities. It can be configured to take three different input signals and convert them to a single fullrange output, or you can choose to have a full-range output and a non-summed subwoofer, or a summed woofer and full-range output with rear fill, or just use it as a level control for three-way output with no summing. If your OEM system does not

all green LEDs, then you increase the gain by adjusting the three gain pots on the top of the SRI. Once you see a flashing orange LED, you know you have matched your radio to the SRI. Should you experience any sort of noise issues, the SRI has a three-position ground isolation switch allowing selection of the appropriate setting to eliminate the noise. have a remote turn-on wire, you have a couple options. You can simply connect the SRI’s remoteon terminal to a switched source of 12 volts at the fuse box, or you can take advantage of the auto detect function. Robert Zeff ’s patented bridge mode detection circuit will turn the unit on and off by sensing the signal directly from the OEM head unit. Note that this signal must be applied to the left channel of input three to function properly. Once connected, the SRI can provide a 12-volt trigger for your amplifiers using the dedicated remote output connection. Setting up the SRI is pretty straightforward thanks in part to the logical and well-labeled controls, as well as the included setup CD. Simply play the CD and turn up the radio volume until the level indicating LEDs turn orange. If you reach full volume on the radio with

and stereo separation are also very good. The unit simply works exactly as intended. The output impedance, a critical specification in this sort of device, is among the best I have ever measured at a very low 22 ohms. From a sonic perspective, the SRI is completely transparent. In my listening tests, I cannot detect any hint of its presence in the system, which is precisely the goal. The perfect amplifier was once described as a straight piece of wire with gain. Well, the SRI comes close to that description as a level matching and summing device instead of an amplifier. When properly set up, it’s not even there.

The Mosconi D2 80.6 is an ideal amplifier to use as an upgrade to an OEM system. The amplifier can be used in six-, five- or threechannel modes, as each pair of channels is also bridgeable. Four channels can be used to drive front and rear speakers while the remaining two channels can be bridged to subwoofers. Further complementing the OEM application is the amplifier’s ability to be turned on and off via the autosense circuit using either DC offset or

capable of 80 watts per channel at four ohms, or 100 watts per channel at two ohms. If that doesn’t sound too incredible, consider this: the Mosconi D2 80.6 measures only 7.9 x 5.7 x 1.6 inches! This makes it one of the highest power density amplifiers we have ever tested, and its tiny size is only part of the allure. With six channels of amplification and full on-board DSP tuning capabilities, this amplifier is a viable solution for almost any audiophile.

actual musical signal to control the amp, eliminating the need for a dedicated remote on wire. All of the controls and connections are found on one side of the amp to make installations clean and tidy. The D2 80.6 can accept either high- or low-level input signals or, if you have the correct output, you can take advantage of the optical input and output SP-DIF connections. The amp will accept eight-gauge power cables and the speaker outputs are on a Molex plug with pigtails, sort of like a head unit. Apart from the typical Mosconi build quality and attention to detail, what really makes this amplifier special is the vast DSP tuning ability that is built-in. There are simply too many functionality and variable possibilities to go into full detail about everything, but I will list the various functions available and provide a screenshot of that adjustment in the software. TEST REPORT And if all that still isn’t enough, the D2 80.6 can be equipped with an MOS-BTS Bluetooth module to permit streaming audio directly to the amplifier. The MOS-BTS module supports A2DP and will play back AAC, MP3, PCM, FLAC and even WAVE files. The amplifier is also compatible with the Mosconi RCD remote controller allowing control of sub volume, presets, balance and fader.
LISTENING For my auditioning of the D2 80.6 I use the amplifier to drive two pairs of components and a single 12-inch subwoofer. The incredible capabilities of the DSP tuning make it easy to get the setup I want, but I have to admit to just playing with things for a while because it is fun to compare the sonic differences in things like crossover slopes and various alignments. When I finally get down to some serious listening, the diminutive amplifier certainly doesn’t disappoint, providing authoritative power and superb sound quality. I listen to my usual eclectic variety of music and find the Mosconi amplifier always up to the task. As I usually do, I write down my thoughts as I listen to the

various songs on my playlist. On the paper are the following comments: • More powerful sounding than expected. • Fun to play with. • Natural sounding top end, not at all brittle or hard sounding. • Surprising bass performance on a single subwoofer, with good control. • Runs warm, but not overly hot. • Sonically very pleasant, sounds exceptionally good for Class D with this much DSP functionality.
Each channel has a phase inversion function, and again, multiple channels can be grouped.
Yes, I like it quite a bit.

PERFORMANCE/BENCH MEASUREMENTS The next day, I move the Mosconi into the test lab and connect it to my measurement equipment. As I expect from my listening session, the amp measures very well, and meets its published performance specifications, but does not exceed them significantly.
CONCLUSION Input channels can be mixed together as desired to feed the outputs. This allows you to combine input channels of differing frequencies and blend them as desired.
The input signal can be EQ’d independently to compensate for OEM equalization.
The Mosconi D2 80.6 is a very special amplifier that has capabilities far beyond the typical car stereo amplifier. It is built with sonic performance as the focus, but includes more than enough tuning functionality to sell itself on that alone. Mosconi products typically appeal to people who demand top quality and exclusivity and are willing to pay for it. With a suggested retail price of USD $1,599 the D2 80.6 continues that tradition. mosconi-america.com MosconiAmerica
A 30-band fully parametric equalizer is available for each pair of channels. The tuning capabilities are mind boggling.

e g a r a G s Garry’ PROJECT C6 BY GARRY SPRINGGAY
STAGE 4: Blind spots and bass boxes
When we last left the project, the sound deadening and Morel speakers had been installed, as well as all new battery and charging cables. The next phase of the build required layout and installation of many of the peripheral devices and systems. In addition to the audio system, the Grand Sport is also getting an Escort STiR Plus remote-mounted radar detector and a set of the Laser Shifter Pro laser shifters.
Because the STiR Plus has a small remotemounted control head and separate display, I wanted a mounting location that would allow them to remain concealed even when functioning. After looking around the Corvette’s interior a bit, I found that both the control panel and the display unit could be custom built into the unused ashtray space. I fabricated a mounting panel from 0.25-inch ABS plastic and figured out a way for the cables to be routed, while still allowing the ashtray door to open and close. As I was building the panel for the radar detector, I noticed the factory lighter socket would be a great spot for a pair of USB connectors, so they were also added. 44
PASMAG
With those two bits in place, the next task called for the Escort’s remote-mounted LED warning light to be integrated into the car’s heads-up display. By doing this, I will get a visual warning right in my field of view, even if I have the radar controls hidden from sight. Getting the LED mounted in the heads-up display and its wire run to the control module took a couple of hours. While I was at it, I also removed the car’s OEM center speaker in the dash and replaced it with the Escort amplified speaker so the detector’s alerts will be heard loud and clear. The control module for the STiR Plus will be mounted in the passenger footwell, on the back of a custom ABS panel. It will share that space with the next system to be installed, the control module for the Ryveen proximity sensors.

As the rear of the Corvette has limited vision, I decided early on to install front and rear proximity sensors and a rear camera. The front proximity sensors will help prevent damage to the C7 carbon front splitter to be installed in the near future. While I had the complete interior out of the car, it was a perfect time to build and install the wiring harnesses for the radar detector as well as the Ryveen gear. I also ran a few extra wires in the harnesses, just in case I decide to add something else in the future. The car will use a single proximity sensor in the center of the rear of the car, as well as two in the front. Because I didn’t want to cut holes in the new carbon fiber diffuser, I mounted the rear proximity sensor on an accessory dress-up item that goes between the car’s exhaust pipes. With that in place, I mounted a Clarion CC510 rear camera on the license plate frame and it virtually disappears. The wires for the proximity sensors, rear camera, radar head and laser shifters were combined into a harness and wrapped with more Tech-Flex sheathing, and with some patience, fished through the OEM wire loom at the firewall. The Rydeen proximity sensor system includes a nice little display that shows your distance to an obstacle, as well as a small self-contained speaker that emits a warning beep increasing in frequency as you get closer to an obstacle. For the Corvette, I mounted the LED display on the top of the dash, attached to the removable center grille. The speaker found a home in the location vacated by the left rear stereo speaker.
Porject C6_Oct_Nov_2015 v2.indd 2
With most of the ancillary wiring in place, it was time to begin construction of the subwoofer enclosure. For the Corvette, I wanted something a little different: a hidden woofer. Early in the design phase, I had decided the subwoofer enclosure would also double as the amp rack. Complicating things a little was the additional requirement that the car’s removable roof would still be stowed using the OEM brackets. This meant the rear side of the enclosure could be no more than about seven inches high. To ensure there was adequate air space for the Audiomobile GTS2112 woofer, the enclosure would be 11 inches high in the front, and drop to seven inches in the rear. To further complicate the design, I wanted the woofer hidden, which meant it would be down firing on an angled baffleboard. This further reduced available enclosure volume and made the woofer’s modest mounting depth the deciding factor on the angle of the mounting baffle. More than a few hours were spent mocking up various designs, calculating volumes, making changes, etc. Finally, I arrived at a design
that had an interesting shape, sufficient volume and adequate woofer clearance on both sides of the woofer. The only drawback to the design was that, because of the curves used to provide all the required clearances, it would be a bit of a challenge to build. I briefly considered fiberglass, but that was too easy. I thought it would be fun to build the whole thing from 0.75-inch MDF to show folks it can be done with a little geometry. I calculated the required angles to fit each strip into place, and cut and fit them one at a time, glued and air nailed into place. Then the entire enclosure was given a thin coat of filler and sanded. When it got close to where I wanted it, I applied a coat of primer and then block sanded it to ensure an even surface. The enclosure will be wrapped in vinyl, so it needs to be smooth and straight. Finally, it was test fit one last time and the top put in place to ensure clearance. Tune in next time to see the audio system finished and the interior of the car completed. Then it will be time to add some horsepower and exterior bling!

ODI BAKCHIS’ FORMULA DRIFT NISSAN 240SX STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW JENNINGS
F
ormula Drift’s roster is filled with drivers from diverse, global backgrounds, and Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis is no exception. Originally from Lithuania, he immigrated to the United States at the age of eight, bringing with him a motorsports background that runs in the family. His father was a professional boat racer in Europe, so it was only a matter of time before Odi could get behind the wheel (or in his case, handlebars) of something fast. Motocross gave way to rally racing and, in 2009, he turned his focus towards professional drifting. Now, in 2015, he is gunning for the FD title in his latest entry: the Feal Suspension / ARK Performance / Nitto Tire Nissan 240SX. At first glance, Bakchis’ Nissan may look pedestrian. There are no whale-tail carbon wings, canards or miniature side mirrors. Don’t be fooled by the sleeper attitude. Bakchis is a quiet guy, but once the visor goes down on his racing helmet, he is just as formidable as any of Formula D’s champions, and his car reflects this. The coupe’s bodywork has been replaced with Dynaflex panels, each serving an important purpose. The front and rear bumpers are more bendable, allowing Bakchis to give love taps to the walls and other race cars without being disrupted. The hood is a carbon fiber vented design to help relieve hot air from the engine bay. His fenders are each 50mm wider than stock, opening up space for a set of sticky Nitto NT05 tires. The rubber is wrapped around the first of many signature mods created specifically for Odi. STR Racing provided a unique edition of its 902 series flow-formed 18-inch wheels in Bakchis’ favorite shade of hot green. It all adds up to a simple, effective philosophy: make room for everything that matters and let the driver do the rest. No gimmicks, just raw design.

Under the bonnet, the engine has to be ready for quick acceleration, and punishing torque that will light up the rear tires on command. To accomplish these tasks, he turned to CBM Motorsports for a crate LS7 V8 engine. Normally, it would put out around 540 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, but that just wouldn’t cut it at the top tier of drifting. Add on a Fast LSXR intake manifold, together with a larger Holley EFI 105-mm throttle body and Fujita air intake, and the engine breathes in exponentially more air. On the back end, Hooker headers feed down to a custom straight pipe exhaust for a lossless exit. The recipe is finished with a dash of nitrous injection to deliver upwards of 650 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. Bakchis’ LS7 may not have the highest output in the sport, but its naturally-aspirated, instantaneous feedback perfectly suits his aggressive, no-hesitation tarmac pirouettes. Moving from the power unit to the corners, a quick peek beneath the 240’s fenders reveal Bakchis’ personal project: the suspension. As President and CEO of Feal, Bakchis not only enjoys some high-quality parts without added cost, he can also fine tune them for his own specific driving style. The Feal 441 drift coilover setup he employs has been tested and refined season after season, even getting input from other Formula Drift drivers that also use the suspension. All Feal coilover kits come with Swift springs, one of the most sought after names in the business, giving the car a stable ride height and consistent travel. The 441 application is also suited to another component within the wheel well: the steering components. The only way to maintain an extreme angled slide and prevent the car from turning into a full-on 360-degree spin is to give the driver more ability to countersteer. Enter Wisefab,

a company that is quickly becoming the drifting equivalent of Coca-Cola for steering arms. Bakchis employs their S14 FD-legal kit on his 240, increasing the turn lock from 37- to 65-degrees! The kit also features camber control, meaning that even though both front wheels are tilted inward when the car is facing straight ahead, the contact patch isn’t largely reduced or degraded in extreme turning. The arms rotate together with the bump of the suspension, smoothening out front end jar and making the car much easier to drive. For Bakchis, it means whenever he flicks the steering wheel from side-to-side, he knows there won’t be any mechanical surprises to correct for. Everything works together to help him perform slides the judges award extra points for. Speaking of steering, the interior continues the theme of unique parts just for Bakchis with a custom wheel by Grip Royal. This full suede rim has black machined spokes and signature “723 Bakchis” branding against the left side - a visual reminder that this driver isn’t your average owner/privateer. The steering wheel is attached to a NRG quick release hub for easy removal on entry/exits to the tight cabin. A few inches farther up sits the Holley Performance EFI touchscreen dashboard. Long gone are the days of oversized tachometers that belong in Hollywood’s early 2000s movie franchises. This new era of tech has ushered in a fully configurable unit that can display and control everything from engine temps to fuel delivery, all in a compact package that fits nicely under the stock meter hood. The rest of the interior is business as usual: a full roll cage to FD’s safety specs, along with Sparco bucket racing seats and Sparco six-point harnesses. Bakchis mated his CBM LS7 to a Tex101A four-speed transmission and ClutchMasters dual plates to handle shifting duties. Beside the gear knob, a specialized ASD handbrake module
connects to the secondary set of rear calipers for locking the rear wheels at will. Stopping power has been upgraded all around with an EBC Nissan Z32 brake kit and EBC Yellowstuff pads. The grip that sits atop Bakchis’ handbrake lever is another unique feature. No, that’s not from a samurai sword; it’s actually Bakchis’ old Scott dirt bike handlebar grip - a keepsake that has stood by him faithfully through multiple S14 builds. Bakchis has consistently upped his drifting game year after year. In his 2011 debut, he earned Formula Drift’s Rookie of the Year award. Last year, he claimed his maiden podiums, first in N.J. and later in Texas, helping to earn himself fourth place overall. Now, with this host of upgrades to his Nissan 240SX, Bakchis feels more confident than ever about challenging for the overall championship in 2015.

THE DE GUZMAN SUPRA’S JOURNEY TO THE TOP BY MICKY SLINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY BRIAN

o matter what the sport or competition, being the champ isn’t easy. It takes determination, focus and oh so much work. Anthony De Guzman, our 2014 Tuner Battlegrounds Champion, is no stranger to any of those words. He knows what it means to put in the work to succeed and chase your vision until it’s a reality. And, as those of you in Winnipeg know, he’s no stranger to building some pretty noteworthy cars. See, this isn’t De Guzman’s first time being featured in PASMAG – he took a feature spot way back in our October 2008 issue with his insane twin-turbo Infiniti G35. The car that started it all for him, however, was a 2002 Toyota Celica (also PASMAG featured in June 2004) that he and his twin brother both pitched
52

in to buy and modify when they were 17-years-old. It turned out to be fairly successful. “We built [the Celica], kept going with it and it kept winning a lot of awards,” De Guzman recalls. “Eventually we stopped working on it in ’07-ish.” So, just a year after hitting the pause button on “DA TWINZ” Celica, De Guzman had already snagged a G35 and had it in PASMAG feature condition. That’s impressive. But, if you know Anthony at all, you know he doesn’t sit on one car for long. He just so happened to stumble upon the next one while he was browsing around Kijiji one day. “I saw this Supra and it was pretty beat up, but I just looked at it and thought, ‘Yeah, this is something I could work with,’ De Guzman explains. “It was

beat up and the paint was blue and it had a really bad body kit. The motor actually had low compression, too, so I had to put a new motor in. That’s how it began. I bought it off of Kijiji as a diamond in the rough.” Ripping off the old gaudy body kit and painting the car a spectacular mixture of Lamborghini Balloon White and Lexus Starfire Pearl paints, with a few other tasteful updates, things were looking up. The engine was swapped out and the new 2JZ got a friend in the form of a Boost Logic Stage 3 single turbo kit. This brought the facelifted Supra up to just over 700 horsepower. De Guzman trimmed it out just right with a sprinkle of JDM bits and
an impressive custom trunk audio install and called it done for a while. That was until he saw something interesting as he was flipping through his latest issue of PASMAG. He saw the words “Tuner Battlegrounds” and his interest was piqued. “I was curious and I went on the Performance Auto & Sound Facebook and Instagram pages and found out it was a competition,” De Guzman laughs. “I applied on my phone, maybe two weeks before the deadline. It was just a last minute decision I made lying in my bed on my phone!” With a sizable personal and professional network of friends, family and colleagues, De Guzman dominated his way through the ranks of the TBG Championship competition, taking on everything from Civics to GT-Rs. He had finally met his match in Vegas at SEMA when he came face-to-face with Moses Awad’s carbon fiberclad 370Z. The night before the decision, the polls were neck and neck, with no clear winner in sight. When we woke up the next day, De Guzman had the lead by a mile. He credits everyone back in Winnipeg with the victory. “I reached out to my network, my friends, family, everybody and it was a good team effort,” says De Guzman. “My city, Winnipeg, really helped me out because they wanted someone from Winnipeg to make it that far.” “‘Supra’ was also the word on everyone’s lips while it was shown off to those at SEMA. It helps that the car has a cult following, but De Guzman also encouraged those interested

to look closely at both competitors’ cars and pick whichever one they liked better, with no hard feelings if it wasn’t his. His charm and sportsmanship probably also played a large part in his win in Las Vegas. Everything wasn’t all sunshine and daisies on his way to Vegas, however. De Guzman was hit with what everyone building a car for SEMA is hit with: the SEMA crunch. He says that without the help of his friend Wayne Fabian of Wayfab Creative, the car wouldn’t have been close to done come showtime. “Getting the stereo done was a challenge in itself,” De Guzman recalls. “I texted my buddy Wayne and explained that we had exactly a week to get the car done. He couldn’t take it in right away because he obviously had to finish his customer stuff first. He took it in on a Wednesday and went crazy that night, then to Thursday morning and Thursday night.” 56
PASMAG
“Friday is when the truck said they were coming to pick the car up,” he continues, laughing. “Wayne went at it for two nights straight working non-stop on that stereo. I think I have a picture of him sleeping in the Supra at like 4 a.m. or something!”
Another close call for the Supra were the one-off gold-plated Niche Grand Prix Mono II forged wheels in 19x10 (front) and 19x12 (rear) that the car donned for it’s Tuner Battlegrounds debut. They were ready just in time for the show, and were actually shipped out to a shop in Las Vegas where they were installed on the first day in front of the crowd! You’ll no doubt notice the Supra you see here is not the car we saw at SEMA. That was all our fault, as we gave our winners time to update their cars. De Guzman took the word “update” as “transform” apparently. We’re not complaining though. The wait has been worth it. The guy turned his engine up 100 more horses to 800 for heaven’s sake! De Guzman says the whole SEMA experience triggered his next Supra phase. “I’m walking around SEMA going, ‘Oh that’s a nice car, that’s a nice car,’” he says. “As soon as I got home, I made a wish list of what I wanted and made a list of companies I needed to contact. Then it was a process of giving them my ideas, giving them my vision and seeing who wanted to work with me.” One noteworthy piece of the puzzle are the one-off, first-oftheir-kind neo-chrome brake calipers from Neo Motorsport.

The process of getting that finish right is pretty tricky and Neo tells us that it took a few attempts to get them perfect. The crucial upgrades to De Guzman was going widebody and getting his Supra on air – a huge theme at SEMA. With Airtekk air struts taking up the corners and the tried-and-true Air Lift Performance management system providing the up and down, the next item on De Guzman’s wish list was the legendary Varis Ridox
widebody kit. It was actually iffy whether that element would make it onto the car. After having a broken English conversation with Varis Japan, they pointed him to Bulletproof Automotive to get the kit, but there was a huge wait to come. “That was one of the last pieces of the puzzle we were waiting for, but it made it,” De Guzman says. “There was a strike at the Long Beach port, so it took a long time to get from Japan to California. Then I had to get it from California to
Canada. It was worth it and all the trouble I went through getting it.” Above all though, De Guzman’s favorite aspect of the car lives in the back seat. Wayfab Creative worked its magic once again, using the previous Hertz Hi-Energy 12-inch HX300D subwoofer, HDP1 amplifier and custom enclosure install as the basis for the new custom air setup Fabian was to tackle. After exchanging verbal ideas as well as sketches, the two decided to combine both of their wishes and really show everyone what Wayfab was capable of. “It took him like a month-anda-half of working on the side,” De Guzman exclaims. “When he was done, I was like, ‘Are you serious right now? Is this real life?’ It was his first time doing air ride!” Can you say talented? That’s amazing! Really, the whole car is. It’s the product of dedication and focus to a vision that, at the end of the day, De Guzman can call his own. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Building something that’s all your own. Becoming a champion along the way isn’t so bad either.

layed out. It’s a phrase we use to describe something that’s overused to the point that some may find the fact that it exists an annoyance. For example: Minions, widebodied cars, Frozen, stock GT-Rs at car meets and even modified 86 platform cars in general (for the record: these aren’t my personal views – I’ll never ‘Let It Go’). To expand on the last item on that list, it seems that some have come down with a case of FR-S/BRZ fatigue. “Oh, another FR-S.” “Oh, another Rocket Bunny 86.” That’s why we like Kendall White’s build so much. It’s the muchneeded refresher; the after-dinner mint that allows you to make your move on your date. In the case of this minty fresh take on the
FR-S, it was originally going to be vastly different than the car you see here. It was originally going to be a track rat, however, past experience took the build in a different direction. “I just don’t like breaking stuff,” White laughs. “If I spend $1,000 on a spoiler and I hit a wall, boom, there goes $1,000. If I have a show car and put $50,000 into it, then I’m going to try to keep that as perfect as I can.” Understood, but no one is safe from the low car blues. Even though he’s running an air system, the infamously terrible highways of Texas, where White hails from, have claimed quite a few of his front lips. One would ask, “Why not trailer the car?” White still likes to drive it, just to a certain radius.

“I put a boundary as to how far I travel,” explains White. “If a show is past four hours away, I’ll hire somebody to haul it for me, but if it’s within a four-hour radius, I’ll drive it.” White probably put the high-end Seibon Carbon front lip and Driveway Labs front splitter combo on the front of his car to deter him from having any more front lip casualties while he’s rolling along the potholed roads on 18x10-inch Avant Garde F130 wheels with a full Airlift Performance air suspension system. Seibon Carbon product actually takes up residence on the hood, the trunk, side skirts, rear spats and even the rear “diffuser.” You’ll notice carbon fiber all over this car, as it’s the secondary color to White’s theme of seafoam green and carbon. The seafoam green is such a great color, but how did the Tiffany-esque hue become the main deal in that equation? It all started with seeing an early ’60s Chevy pickup in seafoam at a car show a couple years back. “I absolutely loved it when I saw it,” says White. “When I eventually bought my car, I had some stuff done to it and went to a show a
Stay Minty FR-S.indd 4
couple towns over from where I live now and they had the same exact truck there – it was a different person’s, but it was the same color and everything. I saw the color a long time ago and fell in love with it and when I saw it again, I was still in love with it.” The rest, they say, is history. This isn’t just one of those wheels, suspension and pretty colors cars – this build checks off all the boxes. Under the hood, past all of the Password JDM dress-up bits, is an Inline Racing custom turbo system that lays down 310 horsepower – 110 over stock is enough to have the need for some upgraded rear axles and carbon driveshaft from the Driveshaft Shop. Not one aspect of this FR-S has been ignored in an effort to achieve show car perfection. Inside, everything has been touched up. JPM Coachworks has worked magic by wrapping almost everything in suede with a minty stitch to tie it all together. Of course, there are carbon fiber items on center console and gauge pods to tie the theme together. Even the Cusco four-point roll cage is color-matched in seafoam green.

CUSTOM ENCLOSURES WITH ROCKFORD P2 10-INCH SUBS AND VIAIR COMPRESSORS HELP TURN THINGS UP TO 11.”

“Since SEMA, I’ve fallen in love with the interior,” gushes White. “I took everything out before SEMA, boxed it all up into two or three big, big boxes and I sent it out there and said that I needed it done a couple weeks before SEMA. I got the stuff three days before the truck came to pickup the car for SEMA! It was a huge time crunch, but it was so worth it.” As with any show car with air ride worth its salt, it needs to have a trunk install happening. Well, when White pops the lid, jaws are dropping. Dual air tanks in – you guessed it – seafoam green are paired with their Viair
compressor counterparts and feature some amazing bronze hardlines by CVT Designs that snake around the trunk. To turn things up to 11, there are also two custom sub enclosures (courtesy of Integrity Concepts) that house a duo of Rockford Fosgate P2 10inch woofers on each side. An MTX 600-watt amplifier takes on the task of powering these loud twins. With all that said, possibly the most impressive part of this 86 is how it came together. Yes, there are many names on this car, but this isn’t a case where a part was sent out and then handed to the
shop. There are a few names on this car you can’t see, and they belong to White’s friends and his late father and brother who supported him and helped put every part on this car, all from the little garage under his townhouse apartment. “I’m very proud of myself and my friends for helping me do that,” says White. “I never thought I would graduate high school and have a completely built show car by time I was 24-years-old. It was a lot of sweat, tears and beers.” No matter which way you look at it, this car puts the FR-S back in “fresh.” You can’t hate on that.

The PASMAG Re-FIT project is a collaboration with Honda Canada to create the perfect blend of style and performance for the third-generation Honda FIT. A global success, the FIT was given the special PASMAG treatment to showcase the versatile platform at major Canadian auto shows across the country. Highlighted by a long list of performance and JDM upgrades, PASMAG sourced a Mugen body kit straight from Japan, while a set of WP Pro brakes sit nestled behind six-spoke Fast Hayaku wheels for some motorsport-inspired style. Bisimoto Engineering developed a special one-off Pulse Chamber muffler and axles to give the Re-FIT the sound and stability it deserved, which is enhanced by a set of Tein Street Flex coilovers and Cusco front and rear sway bars. The PASMAG Re-FIT project drew wide fanfare at Honda booths across the Canadian auto show landscape, and highlights why Honda continues to be a top platform choice for enthusiasts and tuners worldwide.

The first Scion Erik purchased was a 2007 tC in 2010 for its reliability as a daily driver. In early 2014, he found the opportunity to purchase one of only 2000 tC RS 8.0's available and his days of buying purely for reliability were over. Erik has worked as a technician for the past nine years, with almost three of those years at an independent aftermarket shop catering to the "high line" brand and European vehicles. Erik has worked on everything from minor modifications to full-blown race cars. His favorite aspect of this build, believe it or not, is that it is daily driven. Erik's belief is that this makes the build more unique and is born out by everyone's look of disbelief at shows it sets his ride apart from the rest of the clean cars that sit in garages most of the year. The biggest challenge he faced was a tire and wheel combination that would look aggressive while still allowing him to drive it daily comfortably.

or Brandon, the Evo has long been a dream. It was always his first choice in video games and, even after owning two other Mitsubishis, the Evo was always on his mind. To hear Brandon describe it, the 2013 Evo drew him in. He had gone to the dealer for service on his 2009 Ralliart and the Evo, complete with its new shade of blue, called to him – he knew then that he wasn’t leaving without it. The Evo’s pull only grew from there. Before purchasing it, Brandon had never significantly modified a car. In fact, when he bought it he promised himself he wasn’t

going to modify it – that resolution only lasted about three months. The build process started with little things and grew from there – Brandon likes to think the car itself pulled him into building. This build, which has been achieved through careful saving and hands-on hard work, has opened Brandon’s eyes to the intricacies of car modification. He wants his Evo to stand apart from others, with a look that is unique. He has certainly achieved his dream!

amuel Di Tommaso got into car modifications as so many of us do; his friends were into it and so he gave it a try. To hear Samuel describe it, his modifications started out simply enough, with wheels, suspension and a subwoofer the passion grew from there. He purchased this Golf GL in 2005, but it wasn't until 2007 that he began to modify it. What began as a hobby with friends, grew into much more. In fact, Sam is so dedicated to this car, which he describes as his "first love," that he rebuilt it from scratch after the interior caught fire. The fire, which happened in 2012 while he was working on welding the shaved engine bay at a friend's house, could easily have scrapped the car entirely. But for Sam, the better choice was to strip it and do a full makeover. For the rebuild, he chose parts based not on brand, but on quality. Sam estimates he spends about $5,000 a year on parts, and is so happy that he has been able to create a finished product of this caliber.

avid Quang of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has long had a passion for Hondas. He has worked on eight custom cars, including a 2008 Honda Civic Si fa5 and a 2008 Acura RL Elite, but it is clear that this 2006 Honda S2000 is his baby. David comes from a family of mechanics and after completing part of his mechanic apprenticeship, he began to work for Honda as a sales manager. Although he modified and drove other Hondas, it has always been the S2000 that he desired; even at 16, he knew it was the car for him. He's been saving and
planning since he started working and, in 2011, he was able to purchase the car of his dreams. He has dedicated the last four years to customizing the S2000, pouring about $70,000 into the car in the process. Along with his brother Donald and friend Benji Tran, everything from the chassis to the suspension has been modified. The fender flares and wheels, which give the illusion of width, are his favorite parts of the car. Many of the parts David used are difficult to acquire in North America, but he wanted to use only highquality Japanese parts to set this build apart. This attention to detail and desire for perfection made the project time consuming, which was a challenge as David did all the work himself while working full-time. David credits his club, the G106 crew, for providing inspiration throughout the course of the build. They have certainly helped him achieve his goal of turning heads on the road!

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON
At the halfway point in the 2015 Formula Drift PRO2 season, we’ve begun to see a separation in the standings. Of the 36 drivers who have made a qualifying pass, 21 have qualified for the Top 16 tandem rounds so far. Six have pulled away from the rest of the field, having scored at least 100 championship points. In total, eight drivers from the PRO2 class will earn their Formula Drift PRO license for the 2016 season, so there’s still plenty to fight for from all drivers on the roster!

Heilbrunn has been the class of the field at the first two events, qualifying first in both Florida and Seattle and earning an event win and a second place finish. Heilbrunn is originally from Peru, but earned his PRO2 license from the Just Drift ProAm series in Southern California. His speed and tandem experience has shown through in each round, and he is the clear favorite to win the season championship with a 50+ point lead after just two events. We feel that Heilbrunn could easily be competitive in the PRO class, and is likely to be a mainstay in the coming years of Formula Drift.
Evans sophomore season has gone well, earning a win at the Seattle event and qualifying well at both events. Evans is the only Sikky Racing driver in the PRO2 series after his teammate Dan Savage won the PRO2 championship in 2014, and has carried the torch well. Evans finished fifth in 2014, and is looking to improve his finish this season. As the owner of Sikky Manufacturing, who makes V8 mounts for many import vehicles, Evans is technically mixing work with play at each round. We are already seeing improvements in Evans’ tandem skills, and expect him to also become a mainstay in the Formula Drift PRO class in coming years.
Kugay has been a driver we’ve kept our eye on the past few seasons, and his experience in the Formula Drift paddock has helped him develop his PRO2 program quickly. As one of the main crew members for Kenny Moen, Kugay’s car has many parts in common with Moen, and Kugay has been able to learn the ropes of the series alongside the Achilles Tire team over the past few seasons. Kugay has also competed in Europe previously, and is a mainstay in the Golden Gate drift program in Northern California. After earning his first podium in Seattle, Kugay tells us he’s aiming to finish the season strong and continue his momentum in to the Formula Drift PRO class for 2016.

While a rookie in Formula Drift, Gray likely has more seat time in his car than any other driver on the grid. Operating the Powervehicles drift car rental program at Ebisu Circuit in Japan as well as exporting Japanese cars to Europe, Gray has hosted many of the PRO and PRO2 drivers over the years. Gray is making the long commute from his home in Japan for each round much like Daigo Saito, Robbie Nishida and Masashi Yokoi, and he has told us that he plans to compete in the PRO class next season assuming he earns a license. Gray’s four-door Toyota Chaser is one of our favorite cars on the PRO2 grid, and his experience in the chassis has brought him strong results so far.
Hailing from Georgia, Hull has grown up around motorsports and is ready to show his driving prowess. With 10 years of experience around asphalt, dirt and road racing, Hull has focused on building not just a powerful drift car, but a reliable one. Hull has earned a pair of strong qualifying results, and his ability to keep his car running and sideways has allowed him to win several tandem battles as other drivers have either broken or spun out. As simple as it sounds, sometimes the simplest approaches in racing turn out to be the most successful ones. His V8-powered S14 sounds similar to several other V8-powered cars on grid, but only because the formula is tried and true.
As the most experienced driver in the PRO2 grid this season, Briggs has high expectations for himself. In his fourth season of Formula Drift, the Canadian is pulling double duty in both the PRO and PRO2 class for a second consecutive season. Briggs has stayed faithful to the Nissan badge, previously driving a pair of S14s as well as a 350Z in competition. His current SR20-powered S14 is one of the only four-cylinder cars on the PRO2 grid, but has proven to still be competitive. A second VQpowered S14 is in the process of being built, and may make its debut later this season, if not early in 2016.

“BOOK SMART” OR “STREET SMART”? I am a one of a kind girl! I’m educated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. As for work - it’s a secret; I’m living a double life. Let’s just say I’ve been in the financial industry for over 10 years.
HOW WOULD IT MAKE YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE LEFT IN A ROOM FULL OF STRANGERS? I feel like I can spark up a conversation with anyone and make them feel comfortable. To sum it up, I’m pretty approachable. I can talk to strangers about anything and I laugh at my own jokes.
