FOR MANY YEARS I'VE KNOWN CARY MICHIO INAYOSHI and the events he's involved in, which include Wheels N Meals and Shukai, so when he mentioned to me a new event he's organizing called CarNVL at Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California, it was a nobrainer for us to work together and get (more) people involved and engaged. "Dude, I'm going to have a ferris wheel at the show," I remembered him telling me. This brought me real excitement, because I felt that the vibe and hype of the show would be Instagram, social, and photo-friendly. He also mentioned many other activities in our conversation: bike stunts by Str8Up crew; kid zones

It seems like a lifetime ago when Roadster Shop debuted their “Rampage” racecar at SEMA 2014, a car which has since become an instantly recognizable second-generation Camaro icon, and arguably one of the most impressive second-gens ever conceived. Upon the initial debut of Rampage, Roadster Shop was already one of the industry’s most impressive builders, with more than 30 years of industry experience as of today. In the early 2000s, the shop transitioned to a larger location and began focusing on muscle car/pro touring chassis and suspension systems, and the production capabilities the shop has developed over the last 15 years were on full display in the race-ready culmination of all their efforts in the Rampage Camaro.
THE
Rampage Camaro was all business - a true, purposebuilt, pure-bred, bonafide badass racecar. As awesome as it was, it lacked the ability to legally cruise the streets, which turned images of the Rampage Camaro into a pipe dream for most street enthusiasts with posters of the race-ready second-gen Camaro in their garages. Of course, it wasn’t even a full day after the debut of the Rampage Camaro that people began asking what a road going version of the car would be like. Luckily for us, a mysterious client of Roadster Shop had the means to ask that question seriously, in the form of a real job for the Roadster Shop team.
“Road Rage,” as the project has been dubbed, is the answer to those questions regarding a road going version of Rampage. “Designed around a similar fender flare and diffuser package as the race car, Road Rage takes the visual impact of the original and adds Roadster Shop refinement, fit, finish, and road going manners that make for a truly unique GT car, at home on the track or the highway,” the guys at Roadster Shop tell us. That refinement, fit, and finish is exactly what makes this car so special, and those aspects are what made this build so challenging. “The biggest challenge was making sure Road Rage didn’t just look or feel like a nicely painted Rampage,” they said. “It had to have its own personality.” That personality comes in spades, courtesy of bespoke parts and details that do an excellent job of setting the car apart from its racecar predecessor. “As with most highly custom builds, the biggest challenges are the unknowns,” the crew remembers. “How do we build a thin, low profile rear window louver? How do we balance all the finishes together across so many parts and have it look cohesive? How do we maintain the impact of the concept sketch through to the final, physical object?” Thanks to an amazing team of fabricators, engineers, machinists, mechanics, paint and body guys, and their network of partners, they were able to check all the boxes. That thin, low profile rear window louver was created in-house as a one-off piece. The finishes and color scheme of the car

In addition to that impressive flushmounted rear louver, Roadster Shop designed and produced the widebody flares and both front and rear carbon fiber diffusers similar to those on the Rampage Camaro, as well as the lower valance, rocker extensions, and the F40-inspired mesh tail panel designed to fit Lotus Elise tail lights. On that back end there is also an integrated rear bumper and a custom fabricated deck lid spoiler. Tying it all together, and solidifying its true street vehicle status, is a stunning coat of BASF’s Glasurit paint, appropriately dubbed “Rage Blue,” with tasteful gold accents in the form of a grille surround and side stripes featuring the RS logo. That color scheme continues at ground level thanks to Forgeline wheels, a long-time partner of Roadster Shop builds. Over the years, For-

gline and Roadster Shop have worked in tandem to develop and bring to market all new wheel styles, one of which is the latest LS3C wheel you see here. With an 18-inch set in the front, and 19-inch set in the rear, the centerlock Satin Race Gold faced wheels are the perfect fit for some meaty Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, coming in at 315/30 in the front and 345/30 in the rear, an ample amount of tire to keep the power down. The lack of rear seating is only a minor compromise when you consider the rest of the interior. Not one to leave an aspect below par, Roadster Shop
got some helping hands from Avant Garde Design to bring the heat inside the cabin as well. The beautifully reupholstered interior features peanut butter brown leather, as well as CNC construction for some of the bespoke
components like the steering wheel and gauge pods. The custom center console features an Alpine Halo 9 head unit, paired to a JL audio system, and the whole thing is surrounded by the interior’s pièce de résistance - a roll cage that matches the upholstery, almost completely hidden from the outside. Just like its predecessor, Road Rage was built to have the wheels driven off it, so we expect that’s just what the owner has gotten up to since the end of its show floor touring - and that’s just what the guys at Roadster Shop wanted. “We don’t just build pretty things destined for trailers and shows,” the guys at Roadster Shop joke, reaffirming everything we already knew, “they are built to drive, and be driven hard.” Needless to say, we’ll be keeping our eyes on Roadster Shop as long as they’re doing what they do best - building the world’s coolest cars.

BY A L AC K O F R E S T R I C T I O N S As an automotive designer, Jose Gonzalez is a man who is used to meeting client demands for cars. “Sometimes frustration can set in when so many people have influence on a final product,” he says of his freelance work. “I always wondered what it would be like just to build one with my own two hands and not have so many constraints.” With 18 years of design work under his belt, including numerous SEMA cars, movie cars, racecars, and production car designs, he decided it was time to create a masterpiece of his very own.

knowing exactly what he wanted, but knowing it had to be something unique to stand out in the Detroit area, Gonzalez originally started looking at a Datsun 510. He knew he appreciated the more boxy cars of 1970s JDM. That’s when a good friend of Gonzalez pointed him towards JDM Legends, a renowned specialty classic JDM shop in Salt Lake City, Utah. As per his friend’s advice, he inquired about the iconic Hakosuka - the early ‘70s Skyline of every JDM fanboy’s wildest dreams. While on a waiting list of 15 other people chasing the same chassis, Gonzalez got

a call, and he happened to be ready with a deposit the moment it came up for sale. Given two options to choose from, a red one and a silver one, Gonzalez opted for the lower cost of the silver example, and flew to Utah to finalize the purchase.

As soon as he took possession of the car, he knew right away that it needed work. Even without proper build experience of his own to guide him, it didn’t take a professional fabricator to realize the previous owners in Japan had different ideas on how
to fix rust, and the body was in less than stellar shape. Unfortunately for Gonzalez, most Detroit shops wouldn’t touch the car with the amount of work needed on such a unique and rare platform, but he was lucky enough to have good friends in the car community
who would lend a hand. Soon, the car was stripped down to bare metal to do a proper restoration and build from the ground up. With a love for Japanese classics, as well as the core pillars of Japanese car culture, Gonzalez had a general

The racing history of the GT-R, from as far back as original trims from the Prince Motor Company all the way to the modern R35, was one of his primary influences, and he wanted to keep his Hakosuka true to its roots, with just the details setting

Building a period correct 1972 Nissan Skyline with a few modernized details is easier said than done, a lesson that Gonzalez would soon come to learn. “I did not know the build would cost so much. If I knew that I most likely would have opted for the 510,” he laughs, remembering his simpler desires early on. Luckily for us, he persevered, having fully committed to the platform. “I tried to keep
all brands original to the Japanese make,” he writes. “My overall vision was to have modern touches but keep the build simple, clean, and classy.” With a reupholstered interior complete with a cool pair of Bride Histrix seats, a rare set of seats chosen to keep the car period-correct, the car was ready for paint. A bright and beautiful Solid Red A54 paint job, the same paint you can find on the modern GT-R, was applied
by Ohio Paint Modification, and the car’s exterior was well on the way to a proper restoration. A set of special Marchal headlights add to the historical significance of the platform, but from there it’s all tasteful modernization. Carbon Signal supplied bespoke carbon fiber front and rear bumpers, grille trim, headlight and tail light bezels, and front splitter, which replace all chrome exterior components with beautiful carbon fiber pieces, working

perfectly with the Number 7 Racing Products custom adjustable spoiler. Inside the Hako’s cabin, you’ll find more of the same carbon fiber weave, with Carbon Signal’s instrument panel, as well as a carbon fiber steering column and carbon fiber Momo 6C steering wheel. Combined with the previously mentioned Bride Histrix seats, a set that took Gonzalez three years to acquire, the interior of the car is dark and simple, save for the “Blood Money” shifter from Nostalgic Grains and the red horn button in the center of the steering wheel - all simple, yet exciting additions to the 1972 interior. Rounding out interior comfort is a Kenwood audio system, complete with 6x9 speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer. At the ground level, the Hakosuka is equipped with a staple of JDM vin-
215/50/16 and 225/50/16 in the front and rear respectively. Behind the Watanabes is a Wilwood brake setup, featuring 2-piece 300mm rotors, and Forged Dynalite 4-piston calipers - an ample setup for stopping the lightweight classic on a dime. With the chassis looking proper inside and out, it was time to add a drivetrain. Of course, no classic car build is complete without its fair share of struggles, and that’s exactly what Gonzalez was in for. “Initially I built two engines, but since my knowledge was limited, both engines failed,” he tells us, remembering his two blown L-series engines. To save himself further heartbreak, and to be sure the engine was done right, he had the folks at Automotive Machine in Roseville build him the bottom end, and let Slovers Racing in California build a race-ready head for the L28, which would now be bored out to a 3.0L. tage racing - a set of bronze Watanabe R-Type wheels in staggered 16-inch fitment, 8-inches wide in the front, and 9-inches wide in the rear. Adding performance to the iconic looks is a set of Toyo R888R tires, measuring

By the time the block and the head came together, the L28 was equipped with Tomei forged pistons, E31 valves, ported and polished header and welded chamber intake, and a super cool set of triple Mikuni 44mm carburetors mated to custom gold velocity stacks. Now making an estimated 250 horsepower, almost double the L28’s original power, the rear half of the drivetrain would need to be able to handle the power it would be putting down. The thing that kept me going was all the people that say they’re going to do something and never get it done!” Determination to not let life pass him by is what Gonzalez needed to bring his magnum opus together. Hi, Jon! Could you please introduce yourself to our audience for anyone who may not already be familiar? My name is Jon Sibal, an automotive design artist from Southern California. As an automotive artist I create concept design renderings for builders and tuners to help them visualize their build. I’ve been involved in the SoCal import car scene since the early ‘90s, and doing automotive design work professionally for over 10 years. I’m also a comic book inker currently working on DC Comics’ Batman Earth One graphic novel.

Many of our fans know you for some of your wild vehicle renderings, but you do all sorts of work from livery to body kit design. What other work do you do for the automotive aftermarket? That is pretty much the bulk of my work load. In detail, I help automotive companies and independent builders with their design needs from logo designs, posters, brand and content creation, to full add-on and widebody kits, and oneoff build concept designs. I also used to do speculative renderings of upcoming models - basically an educated guess on how it may look based on the available information.

What got you into cars in the first place? I doodled a lot when I was young, mostly anime stuff like robots and spaceships. I soon learned that drawing cars was just as satisfying. I immersed myself in sports cars and race cars, and that got me hooked from then on. I looked at a bunch of books and magazines for reference, got model cars, even raced RC cars, but seeing them in person was very motivating. I couldn’t afford to own them, but drawing them definitely made me feel like I did.
Can you walk us through the design process of one of your renders? Design process varies depending on the project, but typically starts with getting as much info and details that will determine fee and delivery date. From there, I start preparing the vehicle in 3D, both for body kit design and concepts. A 3D model can also be used to preview the livery design more thoroughly. Modeling the body kit is done in Blender 3D, and wheels are done in CAD-based tools - all exported to Keyshot to render images. These can take a few days to a few weeks depending on the details. For designs that will go into production, everything needs to make sense and be buildable. Designing kits with proper proportions that work with the original lines of the vehicle is just as important as reducing any headaches in manufacturing. It’s a different approach to just creating some unrealistic, exaggerated car renders that might be fun to look at, but are not production-friendly.
What techniques and/or software do you use? Before I switched to designing in 3D, I used Photoshop to create renderings, and I still do for post processing and livery designs, along with Illustrator to generate vector files. But I use whatever I can to get the job done. I’m also exploring augmented reality and motion graphics to help with presentation. YouTube tutorials are great for learning techniques, and can help develop your own through practice and time.

reality What is your design rig setup like? My eight-year old iMac (3.4 GHz Quad-core i7, 32GB RAM, etc.) just took a dump recently, so I’m looking to invest in their custom spec, mid-level, pro set up. Single monitor setup with just a magic mouse - no tablet or anything. Just as long as it can handle my work flow, I’m content.
Do you know how many of your renderings have gone on to become real builds?
Has anyone ever surprised you by bringing a really ambitious rendering to life?
I don’t keep track, so I’m not sure of an exact number, but there are quite a few, and even more for the ones that I designed under NDA.
There are quite a few, but one that stands out at the moment is the C6 Corvette that Angie King of CarPorn Racing had built. The design idea was to give a C6 Corvette a C7 conversion with a full widebody treatment that’s wider than an H1 Hummer and a full clamshell hood front end. It was unreal even after seeing in person.
How do your renderings become real cars on the SEMA floor? Do people approach you for bespoke designs? Do some people see an already completed rendering and tell you they want to build it for real? I design body kits for a company on a consistent basis, but the majority of my other clients come from referrals. They typically already have a vision of what they want to build, but just need help with putting their ideas on paper that can be presented to fabricators and potential build partners. Some were inspired by my renderings and want to build it in real life - or a version of it. I work closely with them to decide the proper combinations, color, finishes, etc. When I can, I also try to help them get connected to the right parts manufacturer and/or vendor.
Some of your renderings and liveries are very unique to say the least. What are some sources of inspiration for you? Motorsport is a heavy influence for body kit designs where I try to find balance translating some of the elements for street applications like the CSF Radiators widebody Evo X project. The livery design inspirations vary greatly per clients’ needs, so I typically ask them for preference to narrow down the options. Inspiration can also be based on a product that a client wants to promote, such as in the Meguiar’s x TJ Hunt collab project we just finished recently.

reality Do you have a favorite artist?
Do you have a favorite project you’ve worked on? My personal cars will always be my favorite projects since I have full control on everything. My BMW E36 was the car that made me want to learn how to render. I wasn’t happy with any off-the-shelf body kits on the market, so I decided to design my own. I pieced parts together from different tuners, and redesigned them for cohesiveness. It made a big difference to have a rendering to convey my ideas to the body shop for proper execution.
Do you have a favorite car that became a real build from your own rendering? I would have to go again with a personal car, this time my RWB 964. I’ve always drooled over these builds, and was fortunate enough to help them launch their brand here in the states. After saving enough money I was able to buy a donor car, but it sat for another year until I was able to get the build going. I’m still in disbelief, but very thankful for everyone involved that helped me with it.
I have a few automotive artists that inspire me depending on which project I’m working on. Too many to list, but for concepts I look at Walter Kim’s stuff. When I’m stuck and not sure what to do, his work gets my creative juices flowing. I also admire Judson Bryan’s vector work. In the sea of vector artist out there his work stands out to me, as it gives me that OG Option Magazine style vibe. For the most part, anyone that has great creativity and sensibility in their designs will always grab my attention.
Who are some of your high profile automotive clients when it comes to renderings and livery design? I was fortunate enough to be involved with a number of builds, getting to work with a lot of talented people and companies throughout my career. Big thanks to a few friends like RJ de Vera that led me to work with Meguiar’s and more, Fred Chang that led me to work with Scion, Stan Chen at Toyo Tires, Pat Au that got me designing model cars at JADA Toys, John Pangilinan where we worked on past Ford and Hyundai builds, Papadakis Racing where we designed the body kit and livery for Fredric Aasbo’s drift car, Toyota Motors, KIA Motors, GReddy, H&R Suspension, Mountune, SuperStreet, IAD, CSF Radiators, Roborace, RSTRADA where I got to design the livery for couple of race cars and their client’s Porsche 918, and all the independent builders out there. You guys know who you are.
Is there anything we didn’t cover here that people get wrong about your line of work?
What are you working on these days? Anything you can tell us about? I have a few projects that I’m involved in that will be revealed at SEMA, but for the builds I can talk about now, one is a Porsche 912 being built by Austin Barnett of Billetworkz. I also got to render Rutledge Wood’s RWB backdate build, and helped him choose the proper wheel design for it. John Sarkisyan is bringing the heat again this year. I’m also excited to work with Stan Chen and Igor of CAtuned this year for an old school BMW build.
Some think that it’s easy to do what we do. It can be easy, but totally changes when your livelihood depends on it. The worst is when some think we’re just doing this for fun, and not as a real job, so they expect you to work for free or they offer to pay through exposure.

It's tough to say, but I'd say being on the set of the Gymkhana films are always a blast.

It was tough for the longest time to become financially stable. There were times when I would just ride with race teams to races in order to make it there. I would sleep on hotel room floors because I could not afford hotels. I did anything I could to make it to the events.

The Stance air cup suspension system uses a Viair 380C compressor for its proven durability and performance. The main control unit comes pre-wired and assembled, making it easy to install, and does not require additional parts. The cup is CAD engineered and made from CNC cut billet aluminum and hard anodized. When the air cups are not being used, the coilovers have the same performance and ride quality as if without. With the click of a button, the system provides up to two inches of lift.
EnduraPro and EnduraPro Plus are high-performance OEshape shock absorbers. Designed to use with the vehicle's original spring and upper mount, their lower spring seat is shaped identical to the OE shock absorber. the past several years, air suspension has been all the rage in the show circuit, as well as on the road, and even sometimes in unique track builds. For some enthusiasts, air suspension has become a must-have modification to dial in their stance and ride quality, adding “airing out” to their car’s bag of tricks to impress the crowds at shows and meets. With the growth in popularity of air suspension, companies like Air Lift Performance have to keep innovating and developing their state-of-the-art air suspension systems for new platforms whenever possible. Being ISO 2015 certified and TUV certified as a production facility, this family-owned company maintains the commitment to excellence that has set it apart since 1949. A mainstay on stock cars during the first two decades of NASCAR, this Michigan company quickly built a reputation for innovation in the heart of American automotive country. So how does that work? Every vehicle is different, with varying suspension layouts and geometry, so we can assume the process requires some precision planning from the research and development department. We sat down with Ian Cain, a CAD designer at Air Lift Performance, and one of 30 or so team members that it takes to launch products, to get an idea of what it takes to build a new air suspension system from scratch, using a new vehicle.
Before we start, can you introduce yourself to our readers? I’ve been working here for 12 years starting out with CAD, specifically for the performance division. But realistically I'm in charge of following the project from start to finish from an engineering standpoint, from concept all the way down to “we are ready to build.”

How does the process of choosing the next platform to develop for take place? We have an advanced product quality planning group that assesses the market data, so that could be stuff that we’ve found as requests on our website, and/or stuff that’s brought to us from our dealers as requests, and they say there’s a market for them. Then we’ll create a business case for it with projections and estimated annual usage. Collectively everyone agrees on “yes, this is something we should do,” and that’s it, let’s do it.
Where do you source the new platforms to develop once you’ve decided on the candidate? If we happen to know somebody, or if we happen to have it in the shop already - like somebody that works here has it - we start there. We have recently started doing a bit of outsourcing - actually finding them and paying for them long term for testing, with an understanding of what we’re going to do, how many miles we’re going to put on it, and how it’s to be brought back to whoever has it. In some cases, we also buy them. There’s a bunch of different ways we can attack it.

You mentioned you oversee things from concept to final product, can you walk us through the stages of a brand new system all the way from conceptualization to vehicle teardown, R&D, and then building and finalizing the suspension? So when a vehicle is selected, we then do online research and find out: “Is this something we’re going to need immediately to come up with a concept?” or if it’s a simple one where we’ve got a lot of clearances, we have a general idea of
what air spring we're going to use, and it’s quick and easy. If we need a vehicle, because we’ve got questions about how close things are, then we’ll find one - either go to a dealership and crawl underneath it to review it, or rent one. Actually we did rent a vehicle for a trip. We brought a 3D scanner, and we scanned the components, and brought it back for later development when we finally kicked that project off. In cases where we think there’s going to be significant development, we use that 3D scanner, come up with a concept, and then order prototype parts. We verify they work, and by that we mean we’ll probably order some actual components for the vehicle like lower control arms
and spring seats, and then we’ll take those prototype parts and mock them up against it, make sure they’re conceptually going to work, and then we’ll schedule a vehicle in. When we get the vehicle, we assess how the vehicle arrives whether it's on stock suspension or aftermarket suspension. We’ll catalogue everything from tire pressures to ride heights in its current state, and then we’ll go do a ride evaluation on a specific route that we take, and rate it. On disassembly, we will take photographs for our instruction manual, so we’ll have that portion in there ready to go. From that point, we then start trying to actually install our product, whatever our prototype happens to be. Any snags along the way, we’ll iterate if necessary, taking pictures as well for our instruction manual. Once it’s installed, we’ll cycle through the suspension, verify that we have all of our clearances, and iterate as necessary again, button everything up with torque specs, align the car, and then go do a ride evaluation on the same route we had done the stock one on. Then we assess it along the same lines. Real world testing is not limited to just one ride evaluation,

You mentioned your stuff goes through a lot of review once you have it installed and tested. What’s the most common thing that sends you back to the drawing board? but varies depending on the complexity of design. Some applications may dual path tens of thousands of road miles along with strenuous rig testing before signing off. We go through our criteria and verify: “Did we hit our marks on what we expected our suspension to do for our customer requirements?” and if we didn’t, we make changes, and do it all over again. If we did, we’ll continue on with creating our component drawings, assembly drawings, and drafts for our instruction manuals to hand up to the marketing folks to put into our format. We go over any sort of test plans for validations that are in unique conditions, not just our standard practices, and go through that testing as necessary. Once we have our drawings all figured out, as to what our components are going to be, verified by a couple different eyes, we’ll put it all on a plan for what parts need to be ordered, what parts need to be manufactured, and go from there. That’s kind of our engineering release to the organization. From there it’s inspections, and during the build process we’re verifying that everything works to our prints, and that there aren’t any build material changes or drawing changes that need to be updated.

The thing that makes us go back to the drawing board is what air spring we’re able to fit in there, and if the advanced planning group isn’t happy with what air spring fits, and they want something else, then it’s going back to the drawing board and asking how we can achieve this. That’s a case of market perception, and making sure the market is happy with what they’re getting in an appearance sense. When they pull it out of the box, what is their expectation? What are they planning on getting? And does it work with whatever size wheels they decide to choose? We’re definitely in the industry where big, wide wheels are important, so if we have a spring that is longer and affects the ability of people to have wide wheels, that’s a start-over point for us.

How long does it usually take to make an air suspension system from scratch on a new platform? From an assigned business case that says “go ahead and start doing this,” it’s about six to eight months, assuming there aren’t any hurdles in the way, or unique testing that needs to happen.
So what does Air Lift Performance do to ensure you have an edge over your competitors in the market? Marketing, testing, and developing a solution that fits, works, and lasts. That is one of our key differentiators. Some competitors have a product that does work, however sometimes the way they apply it isn’t in ideal conditions for people who just bolt it in and go. Sometimes they just need to read the instruction manual, and if they don’t, they’re going to have problems. Yes, we have some of that as well, but a lot of what we spend our time on is a simplified solution to make the customer experience easy and enjoyable.

Many of you, I’m sure, have seen cars at shows that are fully wrapped in vinyl to accomplish a color change, or you may have even seen cars that have just a few parts wrapped, like the hood or roof for a partial wrap. Let’s take a look at a third kind of wrap - the printed wrap. When most people think about vinyl wraps they think about style and show cars, but in this case we are taking our track-prepped 2017 Mazda MX-5 and we are utilizing the abilities of a printed vinyl wrap to help create a custom and unique livery. This will help it stand out and represent the sponsors/partners that support it on the track.

the time came to get this project started, we reached out to Anthony Fisher, the owner of Tailored Auto Styling in Portland, Oregon, to pick his brain on all things vinyl. Anthony grew up around cars, with a special thanks to his grandparents who drove autocross events, and though he knew that he had a passion for cars, modification and car culture, he was not passionate about being a mechanic or doing that type of work. After trying his hand at welding, and owning his own custom apparel company with his wife, Anthony found himself doing more
vinyl decals, stripes, and graphics work , until he started messing around with full vehicle wraps. Fast forward to the spring of 2017, after getting trained professionally to wrap cars, Anthony and his wife Mickeala founded Tailored Auto Styling. We asked Anthony to cover the basics on the different types of wraps, and elaborate on what was possible with each. Anthony explained that in the shop they typically use 3M or Avery branded wrapping vinyl. In this specific case we were using 3M vinyl. Most customers do one of three things: a partial wrap, a full color change wrap,

or in our case, a printed wrap. A partial wrap is most commonly seen on the hoods and roofs of cars - typically you will see cars with roof panels wrapped in black, or hoods wrapped in carbon fiber. You will also see owners who want to completely change the color of their car, but are not willing to commit to the permanence of paint, or the higher cost, so they will simply have their cars wrapped in a material like 3M’s 1080 series vinyl film. Lastly, you have situations like ours where a full color change would be a great start, however, we want different colors, patterns, and small details all over that car that simply wouldn’t work with color change vinyls. This is where printed wraps come into play.
Simply put, a printed wrap is a clear or white piece or wrap vinyl that is specified for printing and is fed through a large industrial wide-format printer to have a design printed on it. After the print is completed, it is usually laminated to give the color and design a specific top layer finish, such as glossy or matte. The lamination also acts as a form of protection to help the ink last longer, as well as protect it during installation. The printed option allows for more possibilities, whether it is matching specific colors that don’t exist in vinyl films, creating unique designs such as wild gradients, or patterns, or even textured designs like reptilian scales. In short, printed vinyl gives you more freedom and creativity

with minimal limits. There are even options to print on reflective materials to have your design really stand out. The capabilities with printed vinyls really are amazing, but with more intricate designs come more expenses when compared to more traditional applications of vinyl. Once we had broken down our options, we were ready to begin the printed wrap process. The first thing that Anthony wanted to know was the purpose of our build. Was it

a show car? A track car? What was the goal of the car? What story were we trying to tell? After answering a few questions, we decided that it would be best to base the race livery around the driver’s custom helmet. Images of the helmet were taken and submitted to the house designer, who then takes the information and makes a small scale version of the vehicle. Shortly after, a few design iterations were created, and we were asked for our feedback. This process
lasted a few rounds as we went back and forth deciding on what would best fit our needs, and look best on the car, until the final design was decided on. At this point, once the final design was created, it was time for myself and Anthony, the shop owner, to sign off on the design and to get the printing process started. This is where this journey ends for now. Keep an eye out for part two of this story where we cover the install process and reveal the final results!

As much as vinyl wrap companies and enthusiasts will hashtag #PaintIsDead in their social media posts, the vast majority of the industry recognizes the fact that paint will never die. As stunning and intricate as some vinyl wraps may be, no vinyl will ever compare to the shine and luster of a fresh paint job, with depth you could get lost in for hours. While some enthusiasts may scoff at the often more costly paint process, there are just as many who know that a proper paint job is worth it.

paint, the possibilities are endless, but how exactly does the process differ for different paint finishes? What makes a matte paint stay that way? How does a satin finish blend the best of both matte and glossy finishes? How does a single stage paint differ from a fourstage paint? We sat down with BASF, one of the best paint companies in the world, to see exactly how different paint finishes come together.
The first step to any paint job is preparation. To ensure a proper job, the car, truck, bike, or whatever you have to paint has to be prepped for the entire process. We asked BASF what the most important parts of prep are: “The first step in prepping a car for refinish is cleaning. All panels to be refinished require thorough and proper cleaning, using both waterbased and solvent-borne cleaners. After the parts are clean and dry, the
preparation is solely dependent on the substrate. Substrates include raw plastic, primed plastic, aluminum, steel, galvanized steel, E-coat, old OEM paint work, as well as old aftermarket paintwork. In any case, after cleaning the next step is almost always sanding. The sanding grits used are chosen depending on what coating is being applied first - for example, spray filler, primer, sealer, basecoat/clearcoat or single stage paint. All paint manufacturers produce technical data sheets, and these contain all of the information needed on how to prepare a substrate for a particular coating.” With the car cleaned, sanded, and ready for paint, it is then time to make a move towards the actual painting process. As you may imagine, it’s not always as simple as just spraying paint on the prepared car and rolling it out of the booth - but it can be. We mentioned single stage paint, two-stage, threestage, and four-stage paint above, so what do those “stages” mean? I’ll let BASF explain: “Single stage paint is color and clearcoat in one. They do not do well in outside high-UV environments, unless they are protected by an additional clearcoat. Two-stage is basecoat and clearcoat, which is what 98% of the manufacturers use today. It simply means there is a color applied (stage 1), then a clearcoat (stage 2) to give

protection, shine and color clarity. Three-stage in general are pearl whites, however there are some other colors that are three stage, or tri-coats. This process utilizes a solid ground coat (stage 1), followed by a pearl coat (stage 2), and then lastly a clear coat (stage 3). Four-stage, or quad-coats, are becoming more popular. It is similar to a threestage, but a lot more complex. Lexus Structural Blue is a good example. First a solid color is sprayed (stage 1), followed by a metallic or pearl color (stage 2), then a candy or very transparent solid color (stage 3), and then lastly the clear coat (stage 4).” So where exactly does the finish of the paint come into play? Glossy, matte, and satin finish paints are all drastically different in appearance. How exactly does each one get sprayed? Let’s have BASF break it down.
GLOSS FINISH:
“After the application of the color coat - either basecoat or single stage - then clearcoat is applied. For a standard OEM repair, the base coat will have two full coats of clearcoat applied, with a small dry time in between coats. In the industry, we call the time between coats flash time. This designates how much time is required starting at coat one, and moving to subsequent coats. The more coats, the longer the flash. After the clearcoat is applied, the vehicle is allowed to air dry, or it is baked, depending on the environment. After the paint is cured, small imperfections are sanded out with a fine grit of paper, and then the vehicle is polished by machine to generate a high gloss.”
MATTE/SATIN FINISH:
“The preparation is the same for all paint work. Cleaning and sanding are required for 99% of paint operations done today. The key difference is that you are using a matte clearcoat. To clarify, a regular clear coat is 100% glossy in appearance. We put a flatting agent into the clearcoat, and that knocks down the gloss level to about 50%. This gives the appearance of a matte/satin finish (satin is no different than matte, with the exception of a 20% higher sheen). Just remember it cannot be sanded and polished when finished. Cleaning and preparation is critical for the success of a matte paint job, as any dirt inclusions will be visible after the paint work is complete.”

HOW DO THINGS LIKE PEARLS AND FLAKES FIND THEIR WAY INTO A PAINT? DOES THAT PROCESS CHANGE DEPENDING ON THE PAINT FINISH?
“When we match paint, we mix color from a formula. We add the pearls or metal flakes into the color when we mix a specific formula. Every color is different, so every mix is different. The manufacturers dictate colors, and then we must match them in the field using many types of toners. All colors are sprayed about the same, with minor adjustments being made on metallics and pearls.”

WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE OFTEN GET WRONG ABOUT MAINTAINING THEIR FRESH PAINT JOB?
“Brush style car washes are the worst. Brushless is way better, as it is not putting micro-scratches into the clear coat. All vehicles should be waxed at a minimum of twice per year, always using a clay bar prior to waxing. Fresh paint needs to be cured for about 60 days before applying wax or sealant because it needs to breathe. The wax can stop that process, and cause premature paint failure.”
CAN YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHEAP PAINT JOB AND A PROFESSIONALGRADE GOOD PAINT JOB?
“The two biggest areas are preparation and material type. A cheap paint job involves poor preparation, like not taking the car apart and/or poor sanding techniques. A good job will go through a full disassembly, followed by very stringent and thorough prep work. The second factor is the type of paint - they are not all created equal! There are clearcoats that are $75/gallon and clearcoats that are $500/gallon, and you are absolutely getting what you pay for. In general, the higher the cost, the better the UV protection, gloss, and longevity. Additionally, a $500/ gallon clearcoat will carry a lifetime warranty, and the $75/gallon will have none at all. Always go with the best material that you can afford, as it is absolutely worth it in the long run.”

JOEL WHITE Joel David White, or as many readers know him, @faithinmyfuture, was a passionate photographer and long-time PASMAG contributor who absolutely loved the car scene. A selftaught photographer, he was always working hard in the Long Beach area, scouting cars and meeting the incredible people behind the builds. With a portfolio spanning countless automotive media outlets, and numerous styles, Joel
was a great contributor to have on our team. His very first assignment with us was Giovanny Ayala’s Evo X, a #TBGLIVE winner from his area. From that day on, he was a member of the PASMAG family. Unfortunately, Joel lost his life in a tragic accident in May. While Joel may be gone, the impact he had on us, as well as countless car enthusiasts across the world, will last forever. We miss you, Joel. Rest in peace.
