IN AN INDUSTRY FILLED WITH HUNDREDS OF CAR SHOWS AND MEETS, a brand new concept emerged from the minds of some of the top event producers in the scene. The Atlantic City Enthusiast Summit (ACES) was created to give automotive enthusiasts, car competitors/ builders, and industry brands a place to interact throughout an action-packed weekend experience at the Showboat Hotel, an iconic landmark on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The venue offered the ACES team a chance to host

a truly unique social gathering with an appeal to all genres within the car community. The main portion of the car show went down on the old casino floors. The weekend’s festivities kicked-off with a Friday night rooftop party and meet in the venue’s huge parking garage. The summit ultimately culminated in the Final “Lucky 7” vehicles - selected from different vehicle genres (JDM vintage, JDM modern, Euro vintage, Euro modern, Domestic vintage, Domestic modern, and
4x4/Jeep/Trucks). Those builders then battled headto-head for the event’s Best of Show award while the rest of the vehicles competed for several other “Wild Card” awards. When the dust settled it was Eddie Soto from BadBunnyCrew and his super-detailed 2016 Lexus GS F that took home the Best of Show honors. With several restaurants and bars inside The Showboat Hotel, Vegas-style entertainment and gambling at the Hard Rock Hotel and Oceans Resort both right next door, the Atlantic City Enthusiast Summit truly did provide a bit of something for everyone all within one convenient and inclusive location. Aside from the car show competitions, the weekend featured live entertainment for both the older and younger generations with a Saturday night party at the Diamonds Club inside The Showboat. Enthusiasts also registered for the Tarmac Attack attraction where drivers could register for daily hot lap sessions at Bader Field, an abandoned airport on the inter coastal waterway just a few blocks from the hotel. The response from the competitors was massive, and we can only hope to grow this event and other attractions throughout the year branded to the ACES collaboration team.

NINETEEN YEARS STRONG, the OC Car and Truck Show has become more than a car show - it has become a tradition. The people behind the scenes at the event pride themselves in the car builds as well as the builders. It’s really about the people behind the cars and the car crews that have made the past two decades something special. The weekend included an indoor and outdoor car show on Saturday, culminating in a stack of cool awards including the Top 5 Battle of the Beach “Big Wave” awards – going out to the top five vehicles overall across a truly diverse show floor – featuring anything classics, modern muscle, lifted trucks, mini trucks, tuners, and some of the East Coast’s finest modern builds as well. The OC team works with a professional judging team, hand selected by eJudged Digital Judging each year, and continues to pride itself on accurate and fair results. Sunday featured an all-outdoor truck show hosted by East Coast Minis. The Shoreline Showdown, as it’s been called, has become an all new tradition of OC Car & Truck weekend – now in its third year, and continuing to grow and

showcase some truly innovative and timeless truck builds. 2020 will mark the event’s 20th anniversary, and plans are already in the works to celebrate the milestone. So many interesting individuals, outstanding teams, and unique vehicles have been featured on the Ocean City Convention Center’s floors over the years. The OC Car & Truck Show team will no doubt want to pay tribute to that, while also keeping an eye on the future of the automotive scene on the “eastern shore” of the United States. LiveWire Media and Events has a diverse history in event production. They’ve kept this event going strong for two decades. In August they will host their huge Jeep Week production throughout Ocean City and the surrounding area. They also just operated an amazing music and extreme sports festival called the Jellyfish Festival, bringing a giant stage set-up, mini ramp and Monster Energy Moto X freestyle ramps right onto the beach! We can’t wait to see what is in store going forward.

BMW’s E9 model is an often overlooked chassis from the prestigious German automaker when you ask the average enthusiast about their favorite BMWs. For our friend Willy Izaguirre, however, the E9’s stunning body style and its racing heritage make it an all-star among the Bavarian lineup. Introduced in 1968, the E9 saw a handful of factory iterations in its eight years of production. Perhaps the most iconic of its versions is the 3.0 CSL, introduced in 1972 as a homologation special to make the car eligible for the European Touring Car Championship. Just 1,265 were ever built, and none were ever sold in the United States.

you may have guessed, what you’re looking at here isn’t quite an authentic 3.0 CSL - but something even crazier. After the original BMW E9 2800 CS, and just one year before the homologation special that came five years after the original E9, BMW had mass-produced the 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi models. Izaguirre was looking to build something unique for SEMA when legendary automotive artist Jon Sibal posted a wild widebody render of a BMW 3.0 CSL to his social media. Right away, he knew what he had to do, and his very own BMW E9 build was underway. Izaguirre's storied build history would expand yet again. Upon contacting Sibal, Izaguirre got the go-ahead from the legend himself, albeit with a bit of a nonchalant approval. Being a popular render artist, Sibal is used to people saying they’re going to build his insane designs in the real world, and never hearing
back, so needless to say when Izaguirre rolled into the Toyo Treadpass at SEMA 2018 with a widebody 3.0 CSL clone based on Sibal’s rendering, he was highly impressed. The widebody is obviously completely custom made, designed to match Sibal’s rendering as closely as possible. It was completed by Clason Point Body Shop, and it took about eight months to get proportions and lines absolutely perfect. Included in all the body work is a custom spoiler which is remarkably similar to the one on the 3.0 CSL racecar, with the main difference being the use of a carbon fiber blade in the midsection. All in, the car now sits seven feet wide - just barely fitting on the trailer that was used to bring it to the show. The inside of the classic BMW looks as purpose-built as the outside, with a hint of civility sprinkled throughout. While much of the interior components have been stripped

Ensuring all of that power makes it to the ground is the responsibility of every component underneath the car from the firewall back. Mated to the S52 is the factory E36 M3 ZF transmission, a proven gearbox that can handle ample power without a hiccup. From the driveshaft, through the differential, and across the axles, that rotating power is at the mercy of Toyo R888R tires, which keep the power readily usable. Those Toyos are wrapped around BBS Magnesium center-lock wheels, measuring 17x9.5 up front, and a whopping 17x15.5 in the rear - which not only fills out the widebody nicely, but also allows the lightweight BMW to maintain some semblance of grip.

out and deleted, the pieces of the interior that remain are impeccably crafted and well-suited to the car’s style. Speedhut custom gauges look almost OEM in the Carbon Fiber Elements dashboard, and Izaguirre’s Nostalgic Grains LEGO driver shift knob adds some signature character. Perhaps the coolest aspect of the interior is the story of his carbon fiber bucket seats with their mid-sections wrapped in BMW M fabric. Izaguirre’s mother is a seamstress by trade. When she saw that he was pouring his heart into yet another build, she proposed that she could help him do something on the car when she came to visit her grandchildren. When she showed up, she offered to stitch the center sections of the seats with the BMW M fabric. Halfway through the job, her machine jammed, and being such a loving mother, she opted to finish the job by hand. We often joke about blood, sweat, and tears going into some builds, but in Izaguirre’s case, that saying is literal. Because of the intricacy of the stitching, his mother had pricked her fingers numerous times while finishing the seats, and thus the Izaguirre family’s actual blood is sewn into the fabric of this car. The 3.0 CSL clone is now part of the family legacy. Any pretense of civility ends when you take a gander in the open engine bay. There’s a good reason this E9 remains sans-hood. Where you one found the now-outdated 3.0L engine which was responsible for the 3.0 CS’ moniker, you’ll now find the heart of a BMW E36 M3, the iconic BMW S52 inline-six - an S52B32 3.2L to be exact. Fully built from the ground up by JG Technik LLC in North Brandford, Connecticut, and sporting a big top-mount Precision Turbo 62/66 turbocharged with an OCD Works T51R mod, it’s immediately apparent that this power plant is no joke. Supported by a Schmuck Built turbo manifold, intercooler, radiator, and all titanium fabrication, as well as a VAC Motorsports oil cooler, the S52 is capable of 764 wheel horsepower - a significant bump in power from its stock form, and more than triple the car’s original power.

All in, the 3.0 CSL clone built by Izaguirre is one of the most unique vehicles we’ve ever laid our eyes on, and it’s no surprise that sponsor Toyo Tires selected it for a center spot in the Toyo Treadpass of SEMA 2018. The year was 1992. The Space Shuttle Endeavour had just launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, expanding humanity’s frontiers and establishing a new milestone in engineering ingenuity. Not long after that, another engineering marvel was rolling off the line of BMW assembly plants - the BMW E36 M3 - the first BMW 3-series to feature rear multilink suspension, promising state of the art handling prowess. Sure, it was no space shuttle, but it was close enough for any driving enthusiast to consider it a rocketship of their own.

away from the launch site of the Endeavour was a young Tony Abad, watching television, not knowing his life would change from here on out. “The Ultimate Driving Machine” is how BMW advertised their line of M-cars on television at the time, specifically the iconic E36 M3 of the era.

Throughout his early teenage years, that slogan was repeated over and over in advertisements for the car. The idea of owning one of those ultimate driving machines began to take hold, but he was still too young to pursue the idea seriously. Eventually he came of age, and ended up driving a Volkswagen Golf

R32 of his own. “It was a great car,” Abad says, “but it was too heavy and just didn’t have what I wanted.” Looking for the greener grass on the other side, he occasionally browsed cars for sale near his Texas home. It was only a few years later when a super clean, unmodified 1998 BMW M3 popped up for sale. The television commercials he
saw throughout his years as a teenager came rushing back to memory - this was the car. Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger, not yet knowing what was in store for him. After about a year and a half of driving and enjoying the car in its stock form, the ultimate driving machine started to feel like it needed more.
Some coilovers, a set of BBS RC wheels, and a cold air intake temporarily scratched the itch. “I thought I was on top of the world,” Abad laughs, remembering how simply things started out. “Then the car needed maintenance work.” After some repair bills and another year of using the car as a daily driver, the trouble of finding parts and
affordable repairs for the M3 started to wear on him, and a friend’s advice on swapping the engine began to sound like a good idea. Abad decided to throw caution to the wind, and picked up a 5.7L LS1. Knowing there was a Vorshlag swap kit available to make the LS and T56 transmission install a bolt-in affair, he was

confident it wouldn’t be too much of a hassle. From a mechanical standpoint, he wasn’t wrong, but an unexpected turn of events in his personal life landed the M3 on the backburner. He took that time off to slowly acquire and hoard parts, as well as research other E36 builds for inspiration once he got back into it. Broadway coilovers with air suspension provisions, a rare set of Felony Form front and rear overfenders, and a set of custom staggered OZ Hartge Design C wheels with wide barrels were just a few key acquisitions during his time off. When 2014 rolled around, his friend Manuel Gomez - the same friend who talked him into the LS swap in the first
place - opened the doors to his new shop, Midnight Performance. From then on, Abad’s build was back on track. The LS was undergoing a full rebuild, so Abad sent the shell for body work and a full respray, at which point the Felony Form overfenders were mounted, new trims and moldings were put in, and the engine bay was cleaned up to make room for a sleek LS install. With the car back in his hands, it was wheeled into Midnight Performance for proper assembly. The LS1 is already a relatively potent powerhouse as it sits, but in order to make the entire swap worth it, the Chevy V8 has been bolstered with Diamond pistons, Manley rods, ported
and polished 243 heads, a ported LS6 intake manifold paired with an Aldo Welds custom intake, and a Texas Speed Torquer V3 cam. Coupling all
of the internals and improved airflow goodies with Fore Innovations fuel rails, as well as cooling components to keep temperatures down, the LS1 churns out a healthy 475 whp. As expected, the LS1 and its mated T56 transmission fit in perfectly thanks to Vorshlag’s kit, and once the drivetrain was in, Abad and Gomez turned their attention to the rest of the chassis to ensure the build was cohesive and functional. A big brake kit courtesy of a 996 Porsche, a Sparco strut bar, and a half cage built by Ben Sipson were all powdercoated a bright lime green by Scott Coates in order to add a touch of color accent to the fresh black paint. The interior was put together alongside the half cage, and features suede pillars and a suede headliner,

an OMP 320 Carbon S steering wheel with matching lime green accenting, a carbon fiber center console, and sleek MKAH delete plates for the door cards, rear seat, and glove box, all of which had been removed. Abad stays safe and snug in a set of Recaro Pole Position seats, held in place by a Racetech Magnum 5-point harness, and all of his car’s data is visible on Racepak’s IQ3 digital dash. The exterior of the M3 was already a timeless look, but Abad wasn’t done just yet. Since the air suspension system allowed him to sit as low as possible, the rest of the car had to follow the aggressive style. With Felony Form front fenders and rear overfenders, he was off to a good start. A healthy dose of carbon fiber was in order thanks to an AC Schnitzer carbon fiber front lip, DTM Fiberwerks carbon fiber side skirt extensions, a carbon fiber rear diffuser, and a Mashaw LTW carbon fiber spoiler. DJ Auto provided some sweet projector headlights, and a Final Form and Rize Japan collaboration set of LED tail lights helped finish off the aggressive looks out back. Abad’s original intentions were to build an E36 that could keep up with newer generations of the M3, and since his build took a drastic turn, he

has long surpassed his original goal and built a more show-worthy car than he ever imagined. The car has been considered “done” for about a year and a half, but he says he finds himself wanting to change things up every now and then, and looks forward

Does the GTI before you look unlike any Golf you’ve ever seen before? It should. That’s because very few of the visible parts on this car are available for purchase anywhere. Jason Bos isn’t your average Volkswagen enthusiast. Instead of catalog shopping for parts to improve his 2003 Golf GTI’s driveability, appearance, and overall quality, Bos took it upon himself to put in the hard work himself. Having worked as a machinist and fabricator for nearly two decades, he decided he would learn some new skills to experiment on his own car.
“I'VE
always enjoyed making things, whether it's from fabric, metal, or wood,” Bos tells us, reflecting on his hands-on nature and how it applied to car building. “A car is just a large canvas that lets you try different things.” That big blank canvas was a playground for Bos in the early stages of the build. Bos has owned the car for six years, but its current iteration started about three years into his time with the car, and lasted another three years to reach the point it’s at now. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all. One of the most incredible and immediately noticeable features on this build is the super wide widebody kit. No universal ABS plastic fender
flares here - the pieces of this kit are all hand-made by Bos himself out of sheet metal, after learning some new skills and making some new tools for his machines to help stretch the material with minimal tooling marks. Bos extends a thank-you to Empire Fabrication, an American fabrication company who gave Bos some advice on the process when he called for some help. Once he had figured out the right way to craft a proper reverse curve in the metal, he was proficient in the process by the time he reached the last one.

DIY GTI With his custom fender flares made, he added a splitter, metal side skirts, and spoiler brackets, all hand-made to match the car’s growing widebody aesthetic. With the GTI now several inches wider on each side, the rest of the car’s components needed to work in tandem with that. Matching the car’s width at the highest level is an APR GT250 carbon fiber spoiler attached to Bos’ custom spoiler brackets, reaching almost as far out as the fenders themselves. From top to bottom the car is full of custom surprises, and at ground level you may notice something extra unique. If you know your wheels, you’ve probably spent a bit of time examining the very special Enkei RPF1 wheels in a three-piece variation. You might be thinking to yourself that three-piece Enkei RPF1s don’t exist - and until Bos came along, you would have been right. After splitting a set of RPF1s on his lathe, he had lips and barrels sourced by Righteous Garage, and put together the world’s first three-piece set of Enkei RPF1 wheels, complete with 6-inch lips up front, and 7-inch lips in the rear, with the entire assembly held together with gold M7 hardware. Once completed, the custom RPF1s measured 18x11.5 up front, and 18x13 in the rear. Adding the final finishing touch to the custom wheels is a special JB MaF center cap to let people know just who made them. Allowing the Toyo tires to tuck beneath the wide metal fenders and achieve perfect fitment is a full Air Lift Performance air suspension system, which is managed by a tank, compressor and hardline setup displayed beautifully in the trunk. That trunk setup sits just beneath a green painted,

custom fabricated roll cage, and atop a completely reupholstered trunk floor, complete with diamond-pleated leather and a JB MaF CNC-machined logo plate. Flip a switch, and the internal trunk access door opens via air actuation to show off the battery, compressor, and Zapco 1000-watt amplifier that powers his JL Audio 8W7 subwoofers in a custom enclosure. The entire trunk setup was designed and fabricated by Bos himself, making for an incredible show display that he can truly take pride in. Once the show-worthy nature of the vehicle was well taken care of, Bos directed his attention to ensuring the GTI’s performance matched the aggressive looks. In the three years before he had amassed enough metalworking skills to commit to the car’s transformation, Bos had added a bigger turbo,

He also took this time to install a South Bend stage 2 clutch and a Peloquin LSD. All of that performance preparation paid off in the summer of 2018. After acquiring and hoarding a handful of parts over the years, it was time to make some power. A Precision 5858 turbocharger would replace his old
turbo, and Bos’ fabrication skills would once again come into play as he made his own turbo manifold, intercooler piping, and custom machined Hemi throttle body made to fit on his SEM Motorsport intake manifold. Fuel delivery was taken care of by a Walbro 450 fuel pump and Grams performance 1000cc injectors, and a custom tune from Doman8 brought the entire system into harmony to make a potent 450 estimated wheel horsepower. Since completing the GTI, Bos has earned numerous prestigious acco-
lades at shows both local and abroad. After building a custom bagged trailer last year to bring the car to far away shows, the urge to drive the car more has been taking hold, and he says he will be doing a lot more of that this year. Ultimately, the build was not only a stellar show piece, but also a great learning experience for Bos to hone his skills. He tells us that his next build will utilize those same skills to create something more performance oriented, and less show-car. Whatever it is, we’re here for it.

WHEN
We have all had goals and promises that we made to ourselves back in our adolescent years. Whether it’s a giant house you wanted to buy, some super model you wanted to marry, or a tropical island that you wanted to retire at by age 30. Let’s be real - a lot of us never came through with those promises. Not to bum you out, but that’s just how reality works. There’s a point in your life where you just sit around with your high school friends talking about the good old days and how great things would have been if you just came through with one of those promises. That’s part of getting old. Don’t feel too bad because you’re part of the majority. There is a small handful of people in our world’s giant population that do keep their word to themselves, and Jonathan Huang of Claremont, California is one of them. The promise is his Dakar Yellow 1998 BMW M3 convertible, and like most things from the 90’s, with the exception of Nokia cell phones, classics like this E36 never go out of style.
we first asked why he built his E36 M3, Huang told us that it was out of nostalgia. It was his favorite car growing up, and he vowed that he would buy and build one when he was able to afford it. Sounds familiar. Like many of us, he was just a broke college kid with a passion for cars. His first Bimmer was also an E36 body, but a 325is that he received as a graduation present from his parents. He built that up through the years with parts he could find online or at local shops. Fixing up cars wasn’t as easy back in the day. Young bloods will never understand the challenges of browsing internet forums over slow dial up internet. From that small taste of the sweet nectar, he longed for the day that he could afford the beefed up version of his original 3-series. While Huang’s M3 dreams seemed far from reach, he never strayed from the vow that he made to himself. Between studying and attending college classes, Huang spent the majority of his time flipping through AC Schnitzer catalogs and checking off every single part for his future car until his pen ran out of ink. All he could think to himself was that one day, he would own his dream car. In 2014, one of his boys got him feeling young again so he started scouring the internet to look for the M3 that had his palms sweating back in his teenage years. On April Fool’s Day of that year, he found his car on eBay. So here we are, over 20 years after the production date of his M3 and Huang is feeling more and more content with his build. He did, however, ravage through a series of very luxurious rides through the past two decades from a Lexus SC430, to a BMW M5, to a couple of Aston Martins. As you can see, Jonathan

He goes on to tell us that one of the biggest challenges that he ran into when building his M3 was trying to keep it period-proper to the ‘90s. It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s hot right now, but then this yellow masterpiece wouldn’t be true to form. Nearly the entire car is engulfed head to toe in AC Schnitzer body parts and accessories. If it isn’t carbon fiber this then it’s DTM that. Everything had to be authentic for the car to be perfect in his eyes. For millennials, think of it as the equivalent of having your closet and wardrobe

Technique Tuning programmed ECU. He ran into a bit of a snag when the original tuner went MIA on him and ran off with his cash. His car almost ended up being an expensive door stopper rather than the 400-plus horsepower, show-stopping, asphalt abuser that you see now. We didn’t take Huang for a big audio guy, but he reiterates that his favorite and most expensive component of the car is the Brax sound system from Germany. German car, German audio - seems like a good fit. Huang must have maxed out more than a couple of credit cards orchestrating the combination of Brax speakers
filled with Supreme and Off White gear - just to keep things relatable. Huang mentions that he went with AC Schnitzer because the name sounded very “German” so that all worked out well as the body parts complimented the Dakar Yellow superbly. German cars aren’t known for being nimble and lightweight. Tack on all of the body armor and 18-inch Type II Rennsport wheels, and he was pretty much trying to push a tank around if he kept the engine stock. Huang was well aware of this, so his next focus was on pumping up the horsepower with a Dinan/Vortech V2 supercharger, exhaust, and

and limited edition Denon head unit and controls. If Huang really kept everything period-specific, we can only imagine that he’s bumping some 90’s gangster rap while he battles the Southern California traffic in the Inland Empire. A cool, but probably dangerous side story comes along with the acquisition of Huang’s M3. Car lovers are notorious for putting a build ahead of their significant others, and Huang was no different. While his wife was in the hospital going into labor with their first child, he was out working on his car. Thankfully, everything worked out and he was able to make it there, and still witness the birth of his son. We don’t highly recommend this to anyone that values their own lives. Huang originally built this car for his own self-satisfaction until he eventually decided to flex a bit and enter it into some car shows. In both 2018 and 2019 Bimmerfest events, he was able to rack up two trophies, one of them being “Best of Show,” which isn’t too shabby considering that his M3 is over 20 years old. That’ll show the newbies what’s up.If you haven’t yet inspired yourself, then use Huang’s E36 as inspiration. Maybe you won’t get to marry Tyra Banks, and the chances of retiring on Fiji before your dirty 30 birthday bash have long gone by, but at least you can still hang onto that last thread of hope that owning your dream car might be a possibility. That would definitely liven up your next college reunion.

AN FAVALARO PICKED UP HIS 2016 SCION FR-S in late August of 2015, and almost immediately went over to Nextmod with plans to modify it. After a bit of planning, he decided it would become his first real build in the car scene. Inspired by numerous extensive builds he found on social media, he transformed his FR-S into a true show piece with the help of some important sponsors and friends. “I wanted a vehicle that had a large number of aftermarket parts available so I was able to stand out from the crowd and make a build unlike anyone else has built in the FRS/BRZ scene,” he tells us. That wide array of aftermarket parts availability helped him shape his build with carefully selected parts from across the globe. Having built a 2007 Dodge Caliber previously, he already had a grasp on aftermarket modification, so he knew to shop for quality parts right away, and thanks to Nextmod, those parts were attainable.
