We are proud to introduce the VF / Series made with flow forming technology, a unique approach to wheel manufacturing. The flow forming process maintains the integrity of the design while improving grain-structure of the aluminum, creating a stronger, thinner, and lighter forged-like rim barrel. Flow forming is the answer to the market’s demand for lightweight wheels that are more durable and enhances overall vehicle driving performance.

ISSUE PREVIEW
CONNECT
WELCOME, WELCOME,
WELCOME. T hank you, our loyal PASMAG readers, for joining us deep into the season for yet another issue chock full of amazing content. In this issue, we go big. And not just pretty big. We’re talking huge. We even add a bit of Euro flair just for the fun of it. For this, our August/September issue, we’re featuring some of the latest and most talked about cars, installs and personalities from the tuning world! So, where to begin? For starters, our industry insider Adam Zillin tackles the tuning resurgence from his home base in Japan, and Garry Springgay follows that up with his award-winning audio advice, this time focusing on the importance of batteries vs. capacitors. He's also been chained to his test bench to bring you some real results in our six car audio test report previews. Jacob Leveton is also back as our regular Drift Insider, examining Canada's contribution - past, present and future - to Formula DRIFT. Our Trending section looks at the latest movement taking over the Euro scene and beyond, while our event coverage features AutoCon L.A. – the site where incredible builders, innovative vendors and beautiful people get together to showcase the best the industry
has to offer. Want to get there but aren’t quite sure where to start? In the second installment of our OEM Tuning Platform, we feature the 2015 Subaru WRX and look at what’s possible with one of the tuning scene’s most successful cars of all time. ‘Nuff said. Or, perhaps you want to get down and dirty with an install. Well, why not take a lesson from the best of the best? We’ll take you through a custom Wilwood Engineering brake install on a massive LS-powered RX-7 time attack car and learn the finer details of brake science. We go deep with Jordan Innovations to see just how they selected the kit for their time attack machine. Hopefully it'll make choosing your next set of stoppers as easy as taking candy from a baby. Not that we’d know how easy that is... In Cabe’s Corner, Mr. Sipes breaks down the importance of electrical systems. His latest project car – a 2005 300C – is getting overhauled with a fully motorized audio install and a supporting cast of parts and accessories from PASMAG supporters. Phase two of Project Ground Pounder shows just how the door panels, speakers and sub enclosures are coming together as George Dimitriadis goes through his Mount Everest of a build, a.k.a. his Hummer H2. And that’s not even all of it.
In Tuner Tribe (cue the new Instagram account name battle in 3, 2, 1...), we look at what China is doing in the industry. There are some seriously big things coming out of the East, and with a projected 120 million vehicles on the road by 2020, it’s definitely worth taking notice. This PASMAG exclusive feature will look at some of the more interesting attractions we came across during our recent trip to Beijing. Our Legends series also continues; this time we’re going inside the innovative mind of not one, but two partners in crime: Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage of Formula DRIFT. When it comes to motorsports, they are the modern inventors of sliced bread, and that bread is continuously being baked into plenty of other motorsports deliciousness here and abroad. We said this is a big issue, and while it’s already big enough, bigger is ALWAYS better. There's plenty more exclusive features and content you won’t want to miss. We expect that you’re already flipping through the pages to get caught up. If not, we apologize for keeping you for so long. But congrats for getting this far! Enjoy!

LOST & FOUND Japanese car enthusiasts are a sentimental, opinionated and loyal bunch. Aren’t we? For many of us, the last great era for Japanese sports cars occurred during the ‘80s and ‘90s when Mazda, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Nissan duked it out on and off the track. They were able to do so because Japan was experiencing an economic boom unrivaled since the post World War II era. Japan was flooded with cash and spent it like it was never going to run out. But, as we all know, the bubble burst. Suddenly and without warning, the wells ran dry, leaving all the major Japanese automakers scrambling to cover mounting losses in a shrinking industry. Thousands of jobs were lost and dozens of projects were shelved as the entire country plunged into a recession it is still fighting to recover from. Companies like Mitsubishi

JAPANESE SPORTS CARS GETTING THEIR MOJO BACK BY ADAM ZILLIN
"The JZA80 Supra, R34 GTR, FD3S and NSX are ideal definitions of what a halo car embodies." were on the verge of bankruptcy. There’s a reason Renault owns Nissan, you know. We must remember that any project from a manufacturer that is worthy of our attention is inextricably tied to its financial bottom line. A sports car from a manufacturer, especially a Japanese manufacturer, is a luxury they must be able to afford or justify. It’s easy for us as enthusiasts to forget this point. Japanese manufacturers especially make awesome sports cars – if they can afford to. It’s not a lack of passion, dedication, precision or interest, but rather a result of finances, viability and regulation. Sports cars in the Japanese market are an expendable addition to a lineup that is supported primarily by the appliances that the majority of the prospective buyers end up buying. So, you can understand that, if no one is buying its regular, run-of-themill offerings (the cars we have absolutely no passion for), there is a much greater chance we won’t see anything of interest on the other side, either. This explains, at least in part, why an entire generation of enthusiasts was lost
to the annals of time. For 10 to 15 years, us gear heads have had very few offerings to choose from. This is also one of the main reasons why there is a rapidly growing interest in – and passion for – “Halo” cars from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Not to mention the models Japan kept for itself while other markets were left out. The JZA80 Supra, R34 GT-R, FD3S and NSX are ideal definitions of what a halo car embodies. We love them all, even if we prefer one over the other. We joke about which one is better, but deep down we are all grateful any of them even exist. After all, many of these cars were the main motivation for us getting involved in cars in the first place. This in turn leads us to sentimentality. We hunger for a revival. We hope the manufacturers are listening to us. We remember how awesome things used to be. How often have you heard someone, in verbal or mnemonic form, say that they “...miss the good old days,” or they want this or that manufacturer to “...bring X, Y and Z back?" This entire conundrum, which has only recently started to decode into an understandable format, is most clearly seen amongst today’s Japanese youths. There’s a distinct and unmistakable lack of passion amongst teenagers and 20-somethings in Japan that has it, quite frankly, setting off alarm bells. The disconnect is startling.

Tuning Insider
These young men and women prefer to drive “kei cars,” play video games and keep to themselves. They aren’t looking for a “sports car.” Kei cars or “one-box cars” are a major boon for manufacturers in Japanese car culture today. I don’t particularly like them because they are essentially nothing more than customizable appliances and are viewed as such. I mean, where is the passion in starting or stopping your microwave or washing machine? If, on the other hand, you told me you like the Honda Beat, Suzuki Cappuccino or Mazda AZ-1, you will definitely have my interest and attention; those cars were built with passion. They are all awesome little cars, despite only having bike-sized engines backing them up. In stark contrast to Germany, Japan has given up on the horsepower war. Consider BMW, Mercedes and Audi. These three companies have been at each others throats for as long as I have been alive, and to this day, they continue to build staggeringly powerful and luxurious machines out of the box. Each company has a specific flavor and specific division dedicated to creating the most intense versions of their regular offerings. As they say, one sword sharpens another. Japanese manufacturers, on the other hand, have abandoned their passiveaggressive attitudes toward each other in favor of an ultra conservative and introverted perspective toward the industry. They have become massively risk adverse and are watching their bottom lines closer than ever. It’s hard for any of us to apportion blame when the financial reaper looms over the entire industry with a sickle of bankruptcy. But things are changing, albeit slowly. In November 2011, I was at the official launch for the Toyota 86 at Fuji Speedway. It was there I got to drive the 86 as hard as I liked on the short course, and I was blown away by how good it was as a pure driver’s car. It was spectacularly easy to throw around with just enough power to ensure the grin never left your face. It was cheap. It was well made and it screamed, “Modify me!” Most of all, it was real. I could feel it communicating with me through the seat of my pants. All the speculation, rumors, backbiting, petty complaints and Internet conjecture flew out the window when the car actually broke cover. After such a drought, here was a sports car Japan could be proud of. All of us enthusiasts 22
PASMAG
drank deeply from the spring, hoping it wasn’t a mirage we were experiencing! Looking at the car now, the 86 is one of the most successful sports cars Toyota has made in over a decade, with sales in many markets greatly exceeding expectations. And that is just dealer sales. The aftermarket industry has gone absolutely bats#!t crazy over the car and its twin, the Subaru BRZ. I, for one, am not surprised in the slightest. We also believed in the promises Toyota were making. Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota, actually apologized for the “lost generation of enthusiasts” and vowed, in public, to make it right. That man has my gratitude and respect. Since 2011, things have really warmed up nicely and we are looking at not only a resurgence in the sports car sector, but also in the rivalries between manufacturers. This means that the current generation is coming around. This also means there are good things on the horizon for the next one. It’s obvious there will always be the heavyweights like the GT-R, created purely out of passion and brand intent. But there also appears to be emerging markets in the “middleweight” and “bantamweight” divisions with Honda, Nissan and Toyota all pledging to make smaller and more affordable sports cars in rear-wheel drive configuration. This, in turn, means head-to-head competition on the sales room floor, and that is healthy. We’ve got a raft of new concepts from all the major manufacturers to look forward to and it seems, for all intents and purposes, that the Japanese car makers are starting to take a much more serious look at the sports car segment of the market again. They are actually aiming at getting young people back into the sports car market. Take the Nissan IDX concept for example. I absolutely love it! The IDX is basically Nissan telling the world, “Enthusiasts, we have not forgotten about you.” Love it or hate it, you can’t deny that Nissan’s consideration is a good sign. All of this may be swell and dandy, save for one thing. Hybrid technology. My advice? Get used to it. It’s not going to disappear and will increasingly find its way into mainstream sports
vehicles coming from Japan and aborad. This is the future. It is unavoidable and it is in our best interests as enthusiasts to embrace that future while remembering the good old days. Speaking of good old days, even Honda is getting back into Formula 1 next year with its 1.6-liter turbo unit. Can you understand the significance of such a move? What do you suppose it all means to the average enthusiast? It means that Honda’s hybrid turbo technology will eventually filter down into their sports cars – and that’s a great thing! Any time I find out that Honda is getting serious about top-shelf motorsport, I know something significant is about to take place, since motor racing is a great barometer for manufacturer intent. Honda especially. Back on the road car front, Nissan and Honda claim they are respectively finishing production for a hybrid GT-R and NSX in 2015 and I, for one am looking forward to seeing what they end up with. If the McLaren P1, LaFerrari and Porsche 918 are any indication, Japanese hybrid technology in proper, purebred Japanese sports cars is a very exciting prospect indeed. The way I see it? Embrace the past. Remember the future. You can quote me on that.

SOUND ADVICE
BY GARRY SPRINGGAY
COMMON BATTERY DOS AND DON’TS With the car audio season in full swing, I thought now would be a good time to address a few commonly misunderstood or unknown issues that can go a long way to getting you the best possible performance and life from your battery. Because I get so many questions on the topic, I’ll also share the facts on when to use a capacitor, and when to use additional batteries. With gel cell or AGM batteries, you need to pay close attention to the charge voltage, and never use a cheap, basic battery charger on them. These types of batteries require a charger designed specifically for them, with both temperature compensation and voltage regulation. The appropriate charge voltage depends on the battery temperature. A warmer battery requires less voltage and, if too much charge voltage is applied, the current accepted by the battery increases. This, in turn, increases the temperature of the battery even more, and you have begun a cycle called “thermal runaway,” which will eventually damage the battery. Gel batteries are less susceptible to thermal runaway than AGM batteries, but caution needs to be applied to both designs. If you have a very limited budget, an old school wetcell battery will still provide reliable starting. But it can’t be expected to have the performance or lifespan of a gel or AGM battery. If you have an application where you play your system for long periods of time without the engine running, you may want to look into a gel type battery to give you optimum deep cycle operation. Excellent for car audio applications because of their low internal resistance (typically below 0.01 ohms), high quality and high performance AGM type batteries are available from several different companies. Here in the lab, when I need additional current to supplement my 900 Ampere power supply, I rely on the HC series batteries from Kinetik. Specifically, I use the HC16 model, which has taps for 12- and 16-volt operation, a handy feature when testing high current amplifiers designed to work at higher battery voltages. The Kinetik batteries have proven to be ultra reliable and last a long time, even when not in use.
With gel cell or AGM batteries, you need to pay close attention to the charge voltage, and never use a cheap, basic battery charger on them.
BATTERIES VS. CAPACITORS • Before I get into which one is right for your system, I must point out that there are many grossly overrated (literally) and cheap capacitors out there, and this has caused people to lose confidence in capacitors that are properly built, fairly rated and significantly improve the performance of an audio system. If you have ever installed a capacitor and it made virtually no difference, chances are the cap you bought was vastly overrated. To prove my point, I have taken apart large, heavy capacitors that were labeled and sold as two-Farad devices, but had tiny 300 microfarad caps inside the can with the weight coming from a lump of concrete or tar dumped in the bottom! Just have a look at the picture… In other words, there’s no free lunch. You simply can’t buy a real two-Farad capacitor for 50 bucks. • Batteries have much more energy storage capability than capacitors, making a battery the right choice if you have typical momentary current demands that are far in excess of your alternator’s output. • Batteries (even the good ones) cannot match the ESR/ ESL performance of a good capacitor. For the best audio performance on typical dynamic program material, a high-quality capacitor will improve the current delivery to the amplifier, preventing rail sag and muddy bass. • Multiple batteries should always be of very similar construction to minimize electrical resistances and voltage losses between them. Never parallel batteries of dissimilar chemistry or construction.

RAT STYLE
No, it isn’t some newly discovered move from the Kamasutra. ‘Ratting’ your car may seem new, but people have been rolling in rusted-out cars with the “ain’t care” attitude since the 1920s. Back then, American cars were the original rat rods, but the Euro scene has since taken that crown, with VWs being the undisputed champs. From classic Beetles to last year’s Golf, they’re rocking the rust. There are even a few Porsches (how dare they!) that haven’t had their tetanus shots. But running the rust doesn’t mean their rides are junk. While some go classic rat and drive a scrapyard on wheels, others use the rat style for looks and pack some serious business under the panels. They’re probably in better mechanical shape than your ride!

Basketball season’s over, and by now the Miami Heat probably have their third-straight championship in hand (that’s our prediction at press time, anyway). The offseason is tough, but why not get in on the hardwood action yourself and deck out your car – or trunk at least – like a basketball court?! All the cool kids are doing it, and some nice slabs of hardwood will suitably match your Jordan 12s or whatever kicks you happen to be wearing. If you’re not the high-top wearing type, a smooth wax job will give you a show-winning shine and sock-slippery goodness. There are a ton of color options and finishes, or you can beat it up for an old, weathered look. Think of the possibilities!

HEADLINERS
It never ceases to amaze us just how often headliners – a major part of a vehicle’s interior – are overlooked. Surprisingly, most don’t give them a second thought. Solid colors, suede, velvet, murals or even studded Louis Vuitton if you’re feeling extra snazzy; you can even take a page out of Rolls-Royce’s book and baffle it, install some lighting and create a starry-night sky. Besides, almost anyone can do it with the right materials, a little bit of time and some spray glue. Is it trending? We actually had a hard time finding photos to include here, so it might not be all the rage yet, but give it some time and we should start to see some cool interior ceilings.

BAG IT UP!
EEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKCH. It’s not a nice sound. Scrapes, scratches, broken bodywork – it’s a hefty price to pay for the beauty of a low, static ride. It’s even more painful when it happens loading your car to head to a show. But we came across the biggest bagged innovation since bags themselves – the bagged trailer. It gets low and puts on a bit of a show at the same time but, more importantly, show cars, racers and lowriders can now ditch the two-by-fours and any other questionable devices for a safe load-up. Bag it, load it, lift it and tow it! How’s that for a sales pitch?

THINGS LIKE VINTAGE LUGGAGE AND FAKE FUEL CELLS ARE THE MOST POPULAR CHOICES AND THEY CAN FOOL ALMOST ANYONE.
SUBPRISE! Traditionally, the main idea behind custom sub enclosures has been about showing off. But a new trend has flipped that idea on its head. Now you have to find them. Hiding your subs in custom enclosures that look like commonplace trunk objects has swept most scenes, Euro in particular. Things like vintage luggage and fake fuel cells are the most popular choices and they can fool almost anyone. A sealed box enclosure is your best bet; just make sure there’s enough room to include your chosen disguise. You can run your cables out the back in whatever stealthy way you choose. This should be a game at shows and meets. Anyone up for a round of sub and seek?
HIPS AND LIPS
Rocket Bunny and Liberty Walk are giving all kinds of love to the exotics and Bimmers, but there’s none for your VW. What’s the deal? It’s all good, buddy. Rotiform has your back. One of the biggest names in the game has teamed up with Euro Magic in Japan to create a new kit for your little Mk2. The kit is made of fiberglass and consists of a duckbill front lip and flared bolt-on fenders on all corners. The lip will set you back $680, while the hips will run you $850. Don’t worry four-door or big bumper MK2 owners, the kit will fit you, too. So, what are you waiting for? Get ‘em while they’re hot! PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROTIFORM

RACKS ON RACKS ON RACKS Go to a Euro meet and you can bet you’ll be met with a sea of roof racks. It’s no secret that racks have become a crazy trend amongst enthusiasts. Almost every Euro we see these days has some sort of rack or basket on top. Some install them as a necessity since they’re active people who need to haul bikes and kayaks and such, but others use them like bags from Goodlife Fitness; it gives off an active vibe, but you really only use it because it looks good and it’s convenient sometimes. Roof racks can really set off a build though, A ratted-out ride with a rack full of spare parts and junk can really tie together the look and score you some extra style points. We’ve even seen racks wrapped in festive lights at Christmas time. Stand out from the crowd and get creative! PHOTOGRAPHY BY INTUNED ONLINE

TUESDAY
STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY RANDI BENTIA
Since 2010, Eurokracy has provided European automotive enthusiasts in Canada with an annual show at the Napierville Dragway in Quebec, delivering the best and most entertaining Euro experience possible. The Show & Shine competition draws hundreds of cars and thousands of attendees, but they’ve also added a handful of attractions to encourage enthusiasts from all over North America to witness and experience Quarter-mile Drag Racing, the “Neck Breaker,” Burnout, Best Stance and Mobile Dyno. And let’s not forget the parties – these guys definitely know how to party! The organizers of Eurokracy, Rick Di Corpo, Jesse James and Sergio Da Silva, all carry the same passion as the event’s attendees and competitors. The years they’ve spent organizing, attending, and capturing the essence of the European aftermarket automotive scene is revealed in their current project cars.

European exotic isn’t something you hear too often, but it’s got a great ring to it. Usually it’s a term that’s reserved for the rarest of Ferraris or Paganis, but in human form, Christine Elle is perhaps one of the greatest examples. The Filipino, Chinese and Spanish beauty is, put simply, the perfect mix of all three. Elle was born and raised in New Jersey, but has since moved to the bustling and evolving borough of Brooklyn – home of some of the greatest retaurants and coffee joints in NYC – which is a great thing, because she’s a caffeine-aholic and loves exploring new joints, whether they’re shady holes in the wall or high-end eateries. She also graduated cum laude, loves travelling, partying and exploring and drives an MX-5 on weekends. Currently, Elle is working towards enrolling in a Master’s program (she loves school), but in the meantime, she also works as a registered nurse. Yes. She is the complete package. So much so that we’ll even let it slip that her favorite band is the Spice Girls. What she really wants though, is someone to teach her how to drift her Miata. Take a number and have a seat.
WHAT SHE REALLY WANTS THOUGH, IS SOMEONE TO TEACH HER HOW TO DRIFT HER MIATA.

utoCon’s growth has been impressive to witness over the last few years. In 2010, the show was held in an underground parking structure in the City of Industry, and presented as a charity-type event as they collaborated with the U.S. Marines and Toys for Tots. Many of my friends and industry partners were either attending or playing a major role in the event, so I made sure to make it out. The vibe was fun, laid back - more of a meet then a show - and the collection of toys gathered for children was great to see. In the five years since it started, AutoCon has grown and evolved into a full-blown mainstream event. It has shed smaller event partners, and moved on to collaborate with some of the biggest companies in the business – both automotive and media-wise. I have

attended each year from the beginning. To say that the 2014 event was the biggest and grandest yet would be an understatement. Held in late April at the Pomona Fairplex, AutoCon L.A. kick-started the California show season with a bang. The caliber of vehicles at the event was impressive and diverse, ranging from new era Italian and Japanese supercars all the way to old school classics and gorgeous restomod builds. Liberty Walk displayed its newest builds, namely the freshly-painted Ferrari 458 Italia and R35 GT-R, while everything from an E28 BMW and early ’70s Skyline 2000GT could be found. High-caliber S2000s and many other Honda/Acura builds were present, as well as track-inspired Mitsubishi EVOs and turbocharged and swapped Datsuns. The list goes on. From Japanese to European, they were all there. A major highlight had to be that of the GT-RR Signature Build from Bulletproof Automotive. Featuring full carbon fiber panel replacements from Overtake and a completely refinished Alcantara and carbon fiber interior, this R35 is in the early stages of a top secret overhaul that will surely drop jaws upon its completion some time next year. From humble beginnings to mainstream notoriety, AutoCon has established itself as a necessary event to attend and participate in.

Today, 3M is changing the way consumers think about paint protection with the launch of the Paint Defender System, a new solution that is smart, accessible, and convenient. DEATSCHWERKS DW65V 265 LPH FUEL PUMP FOR 1.8T VW/AUDI $249 | Deatschwerks.com DeatschWerks has expanded its fuel pump range to cover Volkswagen and Audi 1.8t applications. Brand new for 2014, the DW65v fuel pump is the company’s first application-specific fuel pump for the European market. Like the rest of DeatschWerks’ DW65 pump series (DW65c and DW65a), this “v” version flows 265 LPH and can support 500 hp. It is characterized by a special 100% drop-in fitment for applications that don’t take a standard-size fuel pump. The DW65v has the same pick up points as the factory pump and utilizes a system identical to stock to maintain the bucket’s fuel level, avoiding fuel starvation at low fuel levels or in high cornering. Comes with an industry-leading three-year warranty.

Snell SA2010 approved.
PIAA SI-TECH SILICONE FLAT WIPER From $28.99 | piaa.com
Wipers don’t get much credit until you actually need them and, like many of us, I waited until the absolute last minute until making the switch to a fresh set. Thankfully, PIAA sent us a pair of their Silicone Line wiper blades for PASMAG to test. These blades feature a low-profile, frameless design for smooth operation, and the aerodynamic lip ensures they stay firmly planted on the windshield. Most importantly, though, is the silicone-impreganted rubber, which left an invisible film on my windshield that, after wiping, helped bead water off the windshield for a clear and streak-free view. At a price that’s comparable to the competition and durable construction for rain, sleet or snow, they’re definitely worth checking out. - JL

Contact for pricing | ebcbrakes.com
Contact for pricing | ebcbrakes.com
EBC’s USR rotors feature a narrow profile slot pattern that helps to cool and de-gas brake pads at speed, ultimately deterring brake fade. Slots help to promote even pad and rotor wear while the rotors will not develop uneven grooves and never have to be resurfaced. The black geomet and phosphate coating helps protect against corrosion. Sold in pairs.
Perfect for street use on high-horsepower imports, European sports cars and muscle cars. EBC Redstuff brake pads reduce rotor wear and emit up to 80% less dust than OEM pads. EBC’s Redstuff pads have a higher heat range than OEM pads and a strong resistance to brake fade.

If you’re in the market for a high end set of components and your car can accept a three-way system, you owe it to yourself to audition the PPI P.65C3s. This is a truly great sounding speaker system; in my opinion, it ranks up there with anything else in the $450 to $500 range, which is where these live. The sound is unlike anything else out there, and there aren’t enough ‘oooo’s’ in smooth to describe it. Plus, if you have never heard Air Motion Transformer tweeters perform before, that’s reason enough to bring a couple of your favorite CDs to your local PPI dealer and give them a listen. They’re not built to appeal to everybody, but if you fancy yourself as something of an audiophile, they may be for you.

This is one of the most power dense amplifiers I have tested to date. The awesome amount of power developed by the T400X4ad is fantastic, but if you are going to drive it hard on a regular basis, make sure you give it a fighting chance to rid itself of heat. The amplifier sounds great, and the special Punch EQ circuitry provides a better balance of sound when you have road and wind noise to overcome. The amplifier is very well built, and like other Rockford Fosgate products should be an exceptionally reliable performer.

STOCK TO STACKED IT’S NEW, MUCH IMPROVED, BUT IT’S NOT PERFECT BY SHAUN KEENAN
The WRX has been a popular choice amongst enthusiasts since its 1992 debut. New models came out in 2002, then again in 2008, but as it grew older, it also grew softer. Only since the model branched away from the Impreza platform in 2011 did it begin to return to its roots. Now, the 2015 model is more powerful, refined and all-around better than it ever has been before.
The fact the new WRX (and STI for that matter) only comes in one body style might have something to do with it. No, it has everything to do with it. Not having a hatchback meant that engineering and development efforts didn’t have to be split. Whereas the previous models leaned more toward rally performance, the 2015s have been procured to dominate road courses and endurance
races – the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in particular, though it’s more of a STI thing. I had the chance to drive both cars during a Subaru Canada Club Event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (previously Mosport) not far from the PASMAG office. It wasn’t a full day of flat-out, white-knuckled lapping, but it was a great opportunity to get some seat time and feel out some of the changes. Both cars performed night-and-day better than their predecessors for a myriad of reasons, but for now I’m going to focus on the WRX platform as its appeal is a bit wider. Its tuning potential is also somewhat of a question mark as there are big changes all over compared to the STI. For starters, the two-litre direct-injected twin-turbo FA20 Boxer engine with multimode VDC system is entirely new. It sends 258 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque through

The factory ventilated 315 mm front brakes with four-piston calipers, and 286 mm solid rears with two-piston calipers are quite good for everyday use, but if you’re looking to show off – either at the track or at car shows – then bigger, better stoppers are in order. with some adjustable Recaro sport buckets. Or, if you’re looking for more performance-oriented kit for track days, something racier like a Sparco with five-point harnesses. The digital boost gauge with peak function is a nice factory upgrade, but you’ll be able to gain greater control over the turbo system by installing a boost controller such as the GReddy Profec, and dialling it in even more. Also, it won’t be long before somebody gets a hold of this bad boy and creates a special program/chip to maximize engine performance. Of course, one could buy the 390-horsepower and 290 lb-ft STI and call it a day (surely there will be some who go that route), but the WRX offers plenty of tuning options to get it where you want. THE SCIENCE OF STOPPING WILWOOD STOPS 1,000 HP FD RX-7
STORY BY MIKE BONANNI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILLIP AWAD

any would think a car’s braking system is one of its simplest and easiest components to understand. Bigger is better right? You may be surprised to learn how much engineering and thought actually goes into designing a brake system for a car. There is a long list of things to consider that can adversely affect your car’s stopping capabilities. For most of us, we simply choose a brake kit out of a catalog and bolt it on to our car without realizing the research and development that goes into making it work. Fortunately for us, we have guys like Jeff Jordan of Jordan Innovations and companies like Wilwood Engineering, both of whom have the knowledge and the tools to create the ultimate braking systems for our cars. We caught up with them recently to learn more about their process as they design and test a new braking system for Jordan Innovations’ 1,000 hp Mazda RX-7 time attack car. When you’ve got a 2,700-pound Vortech supercharged LSX-powered time attack car producing over 1,000 horsepower and US Touring Car Championship (USTCC) GT levels of downforce, you know your car is capable of some very high speeds. Unfortunately, all the horsepower and downforce in the world means nothing if you can’t slow it down.

Wilwood Brakes_v2.indd 1
A good braking system is the key to producing a fast lap time. If you’re wondering how something that is designed to slow you down can make you go faster, let me explain. A car is only eating away at a lap time when it is accelerating. Unfortunately there are things on a road course called corners, which you must slow down for in most cases. The later you hit the brakes, the less time you spend slowing down, thus giving you more time on the throttle to eat away at that lap time. A fast lap, however, is not just about how late you brake and how fast your car decelerates. Ultimately, it is up to the driver, and a driver must be confident in his brakes to to push the car to its absolute limit. So, in addition to stopping power, a brake manufac-

"When the team looked at the numbers, what they found is over 1.4 g of braking force, an unbelievable improvement over the stock braking system." turer has to think about consistency, reliability, pedal feel, brake proportioning and a long list of other things to give the driver the confidence he/ she needs. When first building their monster time attack RX-7, Jordan Innovations solicited professional sports car racer and Formula Drift driver Conrad Grunewald to do the initial track testing. At the time, the car was still equipped with the factory brakes, which worked fine when the car was stock with 750 less horsepower and much less downforce. Grunewald reported back that the factory brakes made the car almost undriveable, performing well below its capabilities. To fix this, Jordan Innovations turned to the experts at Wilwood Engineering to design and manufacture the ultimate brake kit for the FD RX-7. The first step was planning out which components they would use to match the RX-7’s master cylinder and brake proportioning. After careful thought, they pieced together what will ultimately become the be-all brake kit for the Mazda RX-7 FD. On the front, the brake kit features Wilwood’s new Aero 6 calipers with its patented Thermolock pistons, which reduce caliper operating temperatures to extend seal life and improve performance and consistency – a must-have for track applications. The calipers are paired with Wilwood’s GT 72 Curved Vane Spec-37 14.25-inch two-piece rotors with custom machined

anodized aluminum hats by Jordan Innovations. Jordan Innovations also designed and machined 6061 aluminum mounting brackets to make the kit a complete bolt-on replacement for the factory brakes. Paired with a set of Wilwood PolyMatrix B compound brake pads, the team and Grunewald went back to the race track for more testing. Even though the Jordan Innovations RX-7 was still utilizing stock rear brakes for this test, driver feedback and lap times improved greatly with the addition of the new bespoke Wilwood front brake kit. Grunewald reported that the car now could decelerate quicker than it could accelerate, which is a lot to say considering the car in question has 1,000 horsepower and weighs only 2,700 pounds. Although the stopping power has been increased exponentially, the balance with the stock rear brakes still wasn’t there. The new front brakes were doing a vast majority of the work, but armed with the mountains of data they gathered on the front brakes during the test, they could now accurately match a rear brake kit to complement the front. Back from testing, the Wilwood and Jordan Innovations engineering teams poured over the data and came up with the rear brake system, which features Wilwood’s Forged Narrow Superlite 4 ST calipers, 12.88-inch GT 48 Curved Vane two-piece rotors, Wilwood PolyMatrix B-Compound pads and custom rotor

hats and mounting brackets from Jordan Innovations. Professional sports car racer and Formula Drift driver Carl Rydquist was tasked with the duty of driving the time attack RX-7 for the final brake test where he reported nothing but praise about the new brake system. Once again, the team gathered mountains of data and feedback from the driver. When the smoke cleared, the team had far exceeded their own expectations. The car was no longer limited by its brake system. The feedback from Rydquist suggested that the stopping power was there and the braking was also exceptionally well-balanced, inspired confidence and was easy to control. When the team looked at the numbers, what they found was over 1.4 g of braking force - an unbelievable improvement over the stock braking system. It took several months for a team of engineers from Wilwood and Jordan Innovations to develop and test a new brake kit that can handle loads of force, yet can be bolted onto an FD RX-7 with simple hand-tools. Anyone can purchase this kit through Jordan Innovations with the confidence of knowing that it can hold up to a 1,000 horsepower FD, regardless of what you throw at it. WE NEED MORE POWER CAPTAIN! The most critical upgrade is often overlooked
Some of the most common questions I get asked are: “Do I need to upgrade my alternator?”, “If I add another battery will my system be louder?” In a perfect world, I would tell everybody to upgrade their alternator, battery and wiring, but this can be a very expensive investment that’s not feasible for everyone. To answer these questions you must do some math. Instead of throwing Ohms law and a bunch of formulas at you, I will give you the basic variables to help you decide what components you need to upgrade, if any.
• Mechman Alternator
82
PASMAG
ALTERNATOR The alternator is your vehicle’s electrical power plant. It is responsible for all current once the car has started. Car manufacturers normally design a vehicle to have an alternator that uses 60 percent of its capacity to run the car. This means you have 40 percent left over for any aftermarket items. To make this simple, let’s assume you have a 100amp stock alternator, which would leave you 40 amps
of current for aftermarket equipment. Using the basic power formula (voltage X amperage = power) we can determine that 560 watts is the most amplifier power you can run using this alternator. (For those of you coming up with 480 watts as the answer, you need to know that a 12-volt alternator puts out 14 volts when running.)That may seem pretty good, but it’s not exactly true because you must also factor in items like heat, the age of the stock alternator and the quality/gauge of the wiring used by the manufacturer. If doing math isn’t something you’re interested in, then the easiest way to tell if you need to upgrade your alternator is to park your car and turn on the lights and A/C. Then turn your audio system up 75 percent and look at your headlights. If they are dimming and flickering with the bass, then yes, you need to upgrade your alternator. Otherwise, you run the risk of burning up the current alternator from overheating. High output alternators (available from companies like Mechman) can be built up as high as 360 amps. Once you use a high output alternator you will be amazed at how much better your audio sounds. It will quickly bump this upgrade to the top of your list when doing future builds. WIRING If you are a car audio veteran, you have probably heard the phrase “big three upgrade.” This refers to upgrading the wiring from the alternator to the battery and engine block. If you upgrade the alternator, then a wire upgrade must be done. The correct wire gauge for your amperage draw is critical. The easiest way for me to explain the correlation between amperage and wire gauge is the analogy of the milkshake and the straw. Make a thick milkshake and grab a tiny straw (think coffee stir stick). The milkshake represents the current from the alternator and the straw represents the wire. You are the amplifier that is trying to draw the current through the wire from the alternator. When you try drinking the milkshake with the small straw your head will feel like it’s going to explode. This is exactly what happens to your amplifier if the gauge of wire running from the alternator to your battery is too small. If you are unsure of what gauge to use, you can use a wire gauge chart to determine the correct size.

BATTERIES The main job of the battery is to start the car. That’s it. Once the car is started, all of the current comes from the alternator and is routed through the battery so it can replenish itself from the current draw it just gave to start the car. There are many types of batteries available from companies like Batcap by Xstatic that are a level above anything you will find at your local auto parts store. Rapid charge and discharge batteries allow your alternator to focus on powering your audio system rather than charging the battery. They also have the ability to handle the extremes of massive current draws that would prematurely destroy a standard battery. Remember, the alternator routes through the battery, so all of the current being drawn from the alternator will pass through the battery. If your plan is to add multiple batteries, just realize that you are not creating additional current like you do when upgrading an alternator. Rather, you are creating a greater
2014-05-30 2014-03-31 2:22 3:42 PM
reserve. This reserve will allow you to play your system longer when the car is not running. One of the biggest mistakes I see is when people add an extra battery onto the stock alternator to fix dimming headlights. The fact that it works makes it harder to explain why it’s wrong, but what you have done is added a bigger reserve that the system can draw from so the alternator is shielded from the effects of being too small. Now, this same alternator that was already too small is being tasked to keep two batteries fully charged while the audio system draws from them. This will not end well. It will more than likely leave you stranded with two dead batteries as well as a fried alternator. CONNECTIONS All these upgrades are useless if your connections are not solid. A loose connection, whether it is a ground or battery terminal, will cause unwanted resistance in the flow of current, leading to heat. I know you have all seen a battery with corrosion over the terminals. That can be caused by a loose connection that causes an influx of heat around the terminals,

which the acid reacts to. The same goes for an amplifier with a loose connection – it’s struggling to get the current it needs and is made to work harder because of it. Upgrading your electrical system is the best thing you can do for your audio system by far. You will notice higher SPL, more headroom and less distortion. The average cost of an upgrade can easily be $1,000, but the benefits far exceed the dollar figure. I am not just referring to the sound, but also the expensive repairs and towing charges when your stock equipment inevitably fails.

t’s always important to have balance in an audio system. In this case, balance is having sufficient mids and highs to match up against low end bass reproduction. I’ve run the gamut of mids and highs over the years, from coaxials to Pro Audio 8s and 10s and component sets. For this rebuild, I decided to go with Car Audio component speakers for my mid and high frequency requirements. Now, a set or two would be more than enough for a typical system, but on Project Ground Pounder we will be running a total of 20 component sets in this vehicle. Yes, you read correctly.

FRONT DOOR
As mentioned during our Phase 1 feature, the speaker choice for the build is RE AUDIO. After discussions with Nick Cimino from Core Industries, the Canadian Distributor for RE AUDIO, it was decided the RE AUDIO RE 6.5C component set with the one-inch silk dome tweeter and 6.5-inch midbass driver would be the perfect choice for this build. Afterward I sat down with John Wolak, owner of Ultimate Autosports, to discuss the layout of the doors and how to build them. One mandate I had was to keep them as stock as possible. Now I know what you’re thinking, stock is like an oxymoron in this particular situation. But to me, stock is keeping as much of the door skin as possible without having to rearrange and relocate vital parts of the door, such as the handle, buttons and armrest. I believe we were able to attain a happy medium in the end. Tops on the build list was to measure the doors, see what space is available and how many speakers could fit. Once we measured and saw the available space, a digital design was created in AUTOCAD to arrange the speakers. A few different designs were tried, and the final one was chosen because it not only looked the part, but it also had the perfect blend between the speakers and panel.
REAR DOOR A little clarification; Project Ground Pounder requires that quantity of speakers due to the amount of subwoofers being used and the bass they will reproduce. Phase 2 will cover the building of custom door panels and the installation of the speakers in those door panels. The door panels will account for 11 out of the 20 total component sets (seven sets in the front doors and four in the rear doors) with the remaining nine installed in other parts of the vehicle.

The panel pieces were first cut from ¼-inch MDF for fitment purposes. Once the design was cut and test fitted successfully, the panels were re-cut in oneinch MDF. I then had matching grills made for both the front and rear doors. The next step was to cut the stock door panels and begin the process of molding and fiberglassing the MDF panels to essentially create a new door panel. When molding and fiberglassing the panels, it’s important to fit the pieces tightly against the door skins in order to create a good seal and fitment. Make sure there is enough clearance between the door panel and the side of the seats when they are closed. The following steps are pretty straightforward, including plenty of sanding and more fiberglassing until the fitment is spot on.

e learned many things about the Chinese tuning industry during our interview with YASN’s General Manager Xie Yu at SEMA last fall. But we learned so much more by traveling to China’s capital city and seeing things with our own eyes, and by asking even more questions of those in the industry we traveled so far to talk to. Of course, it helped to have Dennis Sutardjo, YASN’s International Region Manager, show us the ropes and translate Mandarin for us. And even though he is a native of Thailand, the message came through loud and clear. We attended YASN’s CIAACE show, toured some of Beijing’s automotive parts markets and visited a handful of 4S OEM dealers, but one of the main highlights was our visit to what’s known as the Ku Che Xiao Zhen. Also known as Tuner Tribe, this 110,000 square-meter indoor/

outdoor complex of automotive shops and businesses is dedicated to China’s emerging modified street car culture. Established in 2009 with investment from the Nanmofang Township Government of Chaoyang District, Beijing City, and with additional support from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce, the Tuner Tribe is the only commercial street in China dedicated to tuning car culture. Several life-sized Transformers statues made entirely of automotive scrap seemingly keep watch over the parking lot, offering a hint of the creativity and construction skills the players in this marketplace are capable of. We saw more wheel and tire, vinyl and tint, detailing and other shops, including a Bombardier/ Can-Am powersports retailer, but the Tuner Tribe is home to at least a dozen independent tuning shops that have been licensed to modify. Some of these shops are the exclusive Chinese distributors for imported tuning products, including recognizable European brands such as AC Schnitzer, AF Design, CEC, Hamann, HRE, JE Design, KW Suspension, MTM, Novitec, Vogtland and many more.

Dennis had arranged for us to speak with a few shop owners here, and we made some new friends by our own accord. One of them is Barnett Deng, the owner and founder of Auto Craft Evolution (A.C.E.), a shop dedicated to tuning largely Japanese sport compacts. A veteran of the tuning scene himself, Deng’s aspirations to modify and customize cars comes from his love of motorcycles. He’s been part of Beijing’s tuning scene for more than a dozen years, and is as much at home racing on the track as he is the street. He looks to be in his mid to late 30s, which is typical of the tuning demographic in China. During our visit, his employees are eager to show off the fruits of their labor. In this case, the showroom features a clean and smooth midnight purple Mazda RX-8. There is another red RX-8 in the immaculate service area alongside a nice Toyota GT-86. The latter has been tuned for high performance street and track use with a 420-horsepower GReddy turbocharger kit and all sorts of ACE chassis parts. There are Mitsubishi Evos out in the parking lot, and Deng himself arrived at the shop in a tuned Evo 6. A close inspection of the cars tells me these guys really know what they’re doing.

Deng services many different Japanese makes and models at his shop – one of 18 A.C.E. locations throughout China; with others located in Beijing, Shanghai, Hongzhou, Shenzhen and Tianjin – as well as the more popular German platforms. I’m surprised to learn, however, that cars like the GT-86 don’t sell very well (at least in Beijing) because of the simple fact they don’t hold a lot of status, which, in China, is what people care about. They like to show off and get noticed, just like we do. That said, the rules and regulations surrounding vehicle modifications in China – performance mods in particular

– are badly out of date. Fortunately, this problem is being worked on, and could see major strides by the end of 2014. There are three key things that are being worked on. The first is shop licensing, and this is already being done in Beijing. Shops need to be certified as safe, trustworthy and knowledgeable when it comes to servicing and modifying vehicles. They also must be responsible for keeping track of changes. Deng escorts us to his back shop and explains that this spray-painted piece of cardboard is his shop’s license. The next, even bigger challenge is to change the regulations. We’re talking
about an industry potentially worth billions of dollars many times over, so this is being taken very seriously. In fact, Deng told us about a committee he sits on that’s been formed to tackle the whole matter of developing the new regulations for tuning safety, exhaust emissions and noise. With constituents from the government (state and local), law enforcement (police and bylaw enforcers), environmental groups, OE manufacturers, parts manufacturers, tuning shops, the media and enthusiast clubs participating in the discussion, the committee is looking to other parts certifications organizations such as TUV and JASMA to come up with its own set of rules. Regulations for interior modifications are already in place. Some regulations for exterior mods are also in place, however, there are more in process that will impact the legality of body kits and add-ons like spoilers, lighting and other exterior accessories. Finally, the regulations for performance mods would be the final phase. We were told to expect some kind of announcement later this year. The final piece of the puzzle will be to change the vehicle inspection requirements. Current laws require owners to satisfy inspectors once
every two years for vehicles that are up to six years old, once every year for vehicles seven to 10 years old, every six months for 11- to 19-year-old vehicles and every three months for vehicles older than 20 years. Cosmetic things like paint, vinyl wraps, window tint, wheels and tires, and all kinds of interior modifications are allowed. They are also tracked closely with before and after photos that stay with the inspection file. Interestingly, failed inspections don’t come with harsh punishments, but rather small fines. Many enthusiasts just build these costs into their project budget, and pay to play, if you will. The wheel and tire market saw explosive growth once the regulations were loosened. The same is likely for the performance parts market. The Tuner Tribe is also expected to grow once the market opens up, and there are plans to open a tuner vehicle showcase that will feature many of the local shops’ best and coolest cars, and provide a place for Beijing’s growing number of enthusiast car clubs to come and hang out with like-minded people. Even in China, that’s what it is all about. Next in our series on Tuning in China is a closer look at one of Beijing’s preeminent tuners – the 100 Tuning Club. Stay tuned!

rom its emergence in the mountains of Japan, to being nursed in secret, to race track demonstrations, to finally shoving its way boldly into the heart of import car culture, no recent car trend has caught on quite like drifting. Now, after a full decade in the United States, we are happy to pronounce the motorsport of organized drifting alive, well and clutch-kicking its way into its teen years. With its continued growth, issues and questions are ever-present, so we felt the need to sit down once more with Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage, co-founders and still the guiding forces behind the burgeoning Formula DRIFT worldwide empire. We wanted to know about the early days as well as where this dynamic sport is heading in the not-too-distant future. Who first said, “We should start a drift series here in the States?” Jim Liaw: I don’t know actually. I do know that after putting on a hugely successful D1 event at Irwindale, we knew the U.S. needed and wanted a pro drifting series. Ryan Sage: I think what happened was that it became apparent after the D1 event that guys like Millen, Gittin, Hubinette and Forsberg were no joke. They were excellent drivers and extremely marketable. I think at that point, and with the nudging of companies like Yokohama, it was pretty clear what we were supposed to do.
94
PASMAG
What was the biggest hurdle you faced in the early years? JL: Perception. Lack of understanding. Within the industry, we created so much hype for the D1 brand that, for the first few years, we were always challenged with “what’s the difference between Formula DRIFT and D1?” Outside of the industry, but within general automotive culture and traditional motorsports, we were freaks and misfits. Not many people could understand how race cars could be judged in competition, and few people respected the skill level or drifting drivers. We clearly remember those days. “Drifting? What’s that?” What is the biggest hurdle now? JL: We have grown bigger and more wellknown, but there is still a hurdle to overcome in terms of educating new fans about the nuances of the sport as well as business people about the value of it. For example, we are probably live streaming, for free, to more people than any other motorsports series in the world, but many companies have yet to embrace this kind of new technology. RS: The biggest hurdle used to be getting people to realize the amazing nature and massive potential of this sport. Now, the biggest hurdle is getting people to realize the amazing nature and massive potential of this sport. Wait did I just repeat myself? Ha ha, well yes, I still feel the same way. I don’t think Formula DRIFT really gets the respect it deserves outside of our market as contrasted to comparable sports who clearly have less fans, less media, less content and are entirely less progressive.

What is the wildest technical advancement? The invasion of the domestics, the V8s, the radical nitrousjuiced 2JZ single-turbo, or something else entirely? JL: For me it is something unseen and rarely discussed beyond the team: suspension setup. FD teams have matured so much in terms of how they are setting up their cars for each driver, for different types of tracks and for different power outputs. It is not something new per se, as race teams have done this type of work for decades, but within the world of drifting and specifically within the FD field, the knowledge base and experience for setting up a pro drift car has advanced so much that these guys are definitely leaders and innovators globally. RS: Probably the biggest advancement has been the fabricators’ ability to create vehicles that can have so much horsepower, but maintain such high grip levels with non-racing compound tires.

Ideally, how big would you like to grow? How many events per season would you like? JL: We know there are many markets that want us. We are not ignoring them, but we need to be very careful of how we grow and expand. One of our primary objectives is to establish a multi-stop world championship series. The other is to establish a proper ladder system where drivers and teams can work their way up to the pro level via the challenging ladder series. RS: Within the next five years, I’d like to see us get to 10 to 12 events domestically, with a handful of international events and continuing to build out the World Championship.
2014-05-30 5:50 PM
Racing
What’s your favorite drifting venue? JL: I like each round for different reasons, but as an overall event, I really love our second longest-running venue Road Atlanta, and Irwindale Speedway. Atlanta offers a very festive, communal environment filled with barbecues, fan signs, tents, et cetera all to serve the purpose of fans having a great time enjoying the best drifting in the world. Irwindale is like the “Hollywood” of drifting events. Everyone in the industry is there. But not just that, the intensity, the energy of Irwindale is literally electrifying. RS: If you put a gun to my head, I’d say Road Atlanta purely based on what has happened there and the uniqueness of the event venue; it is unlike our other events.
If you could start over again, are there things you would do differently the second time around? JL: Obviously, in hindsight, there are a lot things I can do differently. But instead of thinking about things I could have done better or differently, I try my hardest to progress, mold and re-mold what we are doing, evolve and adapt. I prefer to think about where to go from here versus where we should have gone. I also learned to trust my instincts, and not be swayed by others. RS: There are definitely things that I would do different, but I say that knowing that the decisions we made, and the things we did do, inextricably made us who we are today. In that sense, I am okay with it.
Which chassis, that hasn’t competed already, would you like to see go sideways? JL: There are definitely a ton of cars that would be awesome in FD, but to be realistic (not thinking about an Aston Martin drifting), cars like the Cadillac CTS, newer BMW M3 and Z4, upcoming Lexus RC F, or even having Dodge back would be really interesting to see. RS: It would be fun to see some exotics get in the mix, but realistically, I think there is a lot of room for the European market-based cars.
What do you consider your biggest accomplishment or best moment? JL: We outlasted all the naysayers within and outside of the industry; we made it 10 years and we are still going strong. The other thing is that we are able to create opportunities for people and companies. As a direct and indirect result of Formula DRIFT, jobs and careers have been created: photographers, graphic designers, mechanics, public relations people, etc. For me, seeing that we created so much opportunity for
people is an accomplishment I am proud of. RS: Without a doubt the series is the biggest accomplishment. The sum of the parts will always be bigger than any particular thing. If I had to boil it down to a moment, it would probably be the Red Bull Drifting World Championship. I think that was the moment we staked our flag in the international drifting community. What were your biggest surprises? JL: I am always surprised by people. Sports in general, because of the stress, drama, camaraderie, etc. It brings out the best and worst in people, and I have seen both sides of it at both extremes. RS: The fact that this is what I do for a living. I never could have conceived of this as a child or as a young adult. This opportunity that I have now came purely to us in a brief moment, and it was at that moment that Jim and I jumped on it. Toughest challenges? JL: There are actually many. Making the right decisions; issues like do we expand or not, go international or not, how to handle a particular situation. Though I can get input from staff, teams, sponsors, etc., it is still quite an isolated position I am in. Finding balance; between work

and family, between working your tail off and becoming a workaholic. RS: They are multi-tiered. One aspect is always being involved in advocacy of the sport, promoting it, telling the stories of its power, even after 11 years. The other aspects have to do with balance. When you have so much going on professionally, it is hard to have a traditional, regular life. The hours are unbalanced. The stress comes in extreme waves, and the landscape is constantly changing. Therefore, you have to design your life around that and try to figure out what is important to you and what is going to make you happy given the circumstances. Have you mulled over any new technical assists to help with judging next year? JL: This has been the most common topic of the last decade. “With every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction,” as they say in physics. You add one tool and it takes away from something. What people don’t know is that we

have invested thousands of dollars in testing potential tools for judging. RS: Earlier this year we had a very expensive telemetry system tested at one of our events. It was pretty interesting to see how it works and what it can do. In my opinion, there is a place for more technology, transparency and data, but drifting will always have and need a human element. What’s coming next for FD, as far as technology is concerned? JL: Enhancing what we have. For example, we brought live streaming into play about three years ago. At the time in all of motorsports, we were one of the first, and we were definitely the first to make a big push. I think to everyone else it was just second thought. Maybe it is because we have such a unique audience that is young, educated, diverse and tech savvy that we continue to push new technology. It seems this season everyone
is catching on and making a push into this space that we have forged. RS: The next phase of innovation will be in how content and data is consumed at live events and through what portals. More judging data, more angles, aerial footage, real-time metrics and fan engagement on those portals. More stuff like that. What does it cost (approximately) to start competing in FD these days? JL: The dollar figure can vary from less than $100,000 to almost $500,000 depending on your setup. In addition, there are countless hours of planning, prepping, building, testing and driving; that is a huge part of the cost. RS: At the low end, one could run a team for under 75k. That’s pretty low when you compare that to other motorsports, but yet those others haven’t got the reach and power we do. FD, hands down, is the best bang for your buck in motorsports.

As we look back on 10 years of formally-organized professional drifting, do you think of yourselves as visionaries? At the time you founded Formula DRIFT, did you feel like you were engaged in something trend-setting? JL: I definitely do not think of myself as a visionary. Ryan and I were as much fans and enthusiasts as we were two guys who wanted to organize events as part of our business. I did feel we were onto something new, something that could reshape the motorsports world. RS: I realize that some people will say those words or think what we have done is trend-setting or visionary within the context of this industry, but I don’t go there. That’s not how my brain works. The instant you believe you are of that kind visionary person, you run the risk of drinking your own KoolAid and making more of yourself than there really is.
Do you have any advice for people coming up through the sport? JL: Be prepared. Don’t rush in. Be optimistic and realistic at the same time. Be genuine. RS: For drivers, know what you want to do. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Make sure you write down a plan and then go after it. Don’t just think it. Write down your goals and then put them into action. Look at those goals all the time and remember what you want. We cannot say it any better than that, so we won’t. Walk, run, fly or motor boat to your nearest Formula DRIFT event this season and discover for yourself what all the fuss is about.

he BMW Z4. It’s a car you don’t often see in tuning circles, and rarer still in hardtop form. As a sportscar, it might be the Bavarian automaker’s truest offering: the long front end, short cockpit and almost non-existent tail section lends itself perfectly for great balance and optimal racing characteristics. Think Shelby Daytona Coupe or Datsun 240Z. Its capabilities urged the brass at BMW USA to enlist a GTLM version for the 2013 American Le Mans Series campaign and again as part of the newly-formed Tudor United SportsCar Championship for 2014, where it sits consistently at the top of the timing sheets. Compared to the Z4 M built by Slek Designs, the Team RLL Z4 GTLM is likely the only Z4 on the continent with as much carbon fiber. Even then, it probably still falls short. The work done to the exterior of the car is immediately obvious. On close inspection, the carbon fiber is ridiculously tight-woven, with each seam butted perfectly to one another. We’re talking Beyoncé flawless. As far as carbon fiber builds go, the attention to detail is second to none, and even more impressive considering that it’s built by a couple of full-time college students. The Z4 M made waves at SEMA 2013 as one of the most creative builds on the floor. Typically, projects like this requires vast resources that only a million-dollar operation can offer, but Alberto and Eulises Torres, cousins and co-owners of Slek Designs, simply know how to put their talents to work. Like many of us, their foray into building began as with model cars when they were still just kids. From there it was on to Japanese vehicles before starting on string of Bimmers. Prior to the Z4 M, Slek Designs dove into the 1M, a stunning white widebody E92 M3, and an F10 M5. The 1M gave them their first taste of worldwide recognition, while the M3 opened a ton of doors as part of the SEMA 2012 lineup that also included sponsorships from Savini Wheels, Autowerks Suspension and Nitto Tires, all of whom have supported Slek throughout the company's existence. When it came to Slek's next project, the Z4 was the perfect specimen. Along with being a different platform than most builders choose, each body panel on the car can be easily unbolted and removed. And with a composite manufacturer and designer at their fingertips, the sky was the limit. The only thing working against them was the six-month timeline leading into SEMA. To make the deadline, Alberto and Eulises doubled their staff and focused all of their efforts on designing, molding and meticulously manufacturing each panel – 13 in all. At the same time they were organizing sponsors, parts and building the car in time for the show...while attending school. And you thought you were busy. The simplicity of the design is what really separates this build from the rest. From afar, the bare carbon works perfectly with the classic gold RSV Forge 19-inch wheels and color-matched sticker work. There’s nothing overbearing or in your face, but as you get closer, the Slek body work enhances the BMW’s beautiful silhouette in every way. The carbon process which created this piece of art is rare in the world of aftermarket constructors, but Slek Designs can basically build or replicate any part of your car in carbon fiber. The fitment on the Z4 is perfect, thanks to durable materials made using a special carbon honeycomb matrix and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding process (VARTM) akin to what is used AUGUST 2014

SOURCE OF FIBER in aerospace and Formula One applications. Put bluntly, it's top quality, built to last and the final result speaks for itself. The front bumper and splitter suck in plenty of air and provide just the right amount of downforce; on the hood are twin cooling outlets reminiscent of the Z4 GTLM race car; behind the front wheels are giant vents that improve airflow through the body and down the side of the car into a set of rear intakes, which can be routed to help cool the rear stoppers. At the tail end, Slek’s intricate design utilizes four air outlets in the rear quarter panels and bumper to allow air to escape while connecting the widebody work with the main structure. The custom trunk and built-in duckbill spoiler completes a package that makes it look like a Dinan on steroids. In the end, weight savings on the body work total an incredible 300 lbs. That reduction is felt throughout the car; in its handling, cornering and, most importantly, its power output. The S54 engine and VF Engineering supercharger kit push 570 horsepower, but the response is greatly increased thanks to a lightened load. The VF is also the fastest supercharger kit available for the Z4, making this a scary opponent in any situation. The RSV Forged wheels? They were built to be show ready and track capable with help from monstrous Nitto Invo tires (275 mm front and 345 mm rear) and Ksport Kontrol Pro coilovers, which offer 36 levels of adjustable damping and are designed specifically for road racing. Inside, things are kept simple. This is a BMW after all. But again, Alberto and Eulises decided

SOURCE OF FIBER that if the car ever has to prove itself on the track, Status Racing FIA-approved carbon seats, five-point harnesses and a gold SAE Motorsports custom roll cage will continue the color theme and keep the driver and passengers secure. As for the audio, forget it. There’s a stock system, but it’s doubtful that anyone looking at this car will care. It’s built to show and go, and does exactly that. The BMW aftermarket is a beautiful, but less commonplace. It’s a marque with extensive brand loyalty and a beloved history. The quality of workmanship of this Z4 M continues to turn heads of enthusiasts young and old, and resulted in one of the highest honors in the BMW tuning community when it captured the Best of Show at MFest VIII this year. The response was so good that Slek decided to make the kit available in both carbon fiber ($24,999) and fiberglass options ($14,000). If this is what a couple of college students can achieve while still in school, just wait until they get out into the free world.

Audi A3 16.04-August.indd 1
Some things just go together. Like peanut butter and jelly, or three-piece forged wheels on a built VW. Others less so. Such as dipping your fries into your milkshake (it’ll change your life), or going all Japanese on your German hatch. Jose Romo’s Audi A3 is what happens when you’re raised on JDM, but fall in love with the Euro scene. It’s all good though, because like putting chips on your sandwich (you’re welcome), it totally works. It’s not like Romo was new to the scene and just didn’t know the distinction between the two. You see, building cars has always been in his family – he grew up on it. “My pops always had cars lowered with wheels, like 13-inch Daytons on his Toyota Tercel,” Laughs Romo. “My uncle had a crazy VW Bug he built. I have always been into it.” Things started off in the form of a 1999 four-door Honda Civic with a full Bomex body kit, some interior parts, suspension and wheels – “just the basics,” according to Romo. Unfortunate circumstances intervened, however. A student driver was stalled directly in his path but, with traffic on either side of him, Romo knew that swerving to avoid the car wasn’t an option. He just didn’t have enough time to stop, so he was forced to bite the bullet and hit the stationary student. “That car ended up being totaled.” An enthusiast without a car is just not right, so Romo’s top priority after the accident ordeal was over with was getting a new ride. This time he found himself leaning towards an Audi. Romo
even went to the dealer with an A4 in mind as his next purchase. Just as he was looking over some models on the lot, something changed his mind. “Suddenly a truck appears with a load of new A3s,” recalls Romo. “It was a brand new model in 2006. I was like, ‘This is something different, a sport hatchback from Audi.’ I test drove it and fell in love with it.” With a new 2.0L TFSI (8P), Romo was ecstatic. He had never owned a turbocharged car before and made sure to put it to good use. Before he locked in on the A3, Romo knew he was going to modify whatever car he chose. His friends at High End Performance, and even his family had encouraged him to do so. “My friends and family have always been there when I needed help with parts,” says Romo. “They always give me advice on what, and what not to do with the car. If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know what I’d have!” What Romo has now though is a bad little piece of machinery. From any angle, you can see the JDM styling cues. When looking at it head-on, the yellow running lights and fog lights are definitely JDM-inspired. Romo gave his Audi some shades with a light smoke on

the headlights and taillights. The stock grill has been blacked out with the lower bits punched out to reveal the intercooler hiding just behind the Oettinger front bumper. For a bit of charm, Romo bolted on a “SOO SEXZ” vanity plate. Indeed. The Rieger skirts and rear bumper are matches made in Euro heaven for the Oettinger bumper, giving the car just the right amount of aggression. Adding to the aggression is the Audi’s stance. D2 Racing coilovers lower the pulled fenders over the 19-inch SSR Professor SP3 wheels, which are sporting MayRun MR500 tires. If you take a peek past the spokes on the SSRs, you’ll see some baby blue Rotora calipers that clamp onto some 13-inch slotted and drilled rotors. On the outside, custom carbon fiber panels go from hood to trunk and cut a nice contrast on the unique pale lime green paint. Under the Seibon Carbon hood it is nice, simple and looks just right. A K&N air filter attached to a polished Neuspeed intake pipe winds around the engine. Polished to match the intake, a EuroSport custom front strut bar keeps things rigid. A carbon Neuspeed engine cover sits over the turbocharged inline-four,
which is being manipulated by Revo Stage 2+ tuning software. EuroCustoms up- and downpipes carry exhaust gasses to and from the Audi turbo and out the MagnaFlow exhaust with a nice note. “I think that it’s something different,” says Romo. “Like, it has more of a JDM style than Euro and people trip out when they see it.” The A3 definitely isn’t what you’d expect, and Romo has carried the theme into the cabin. The first thing you’ll notice is there’s Bride everywhere – the brand, not the newlywed. Bride carbon-Kevlar Gias Lowmax buckets with Scroth harnesses looped through them take the place of the cushy Audi seats. Red Bride fabric is used on the rear seats and the hatch cover to get the message across. Matching red suede coats the door inserts, headliner and A-pillars. Carbon fiber door inserts sit

Romo didn’t skimp out on the audio side of things. Smack in the middle of the dash is a Sony XAV-A1 head unit with an in-dash display. From there, Romo has access to Sony tweeters, Alpine Type S speakers and 12-inch Alpine Type E subwoofers. A Rockford Fosgate LED capacitor and AudioControl Bass Epicenter helps to ensure the Audi shakes the ground as well as people’s heads.
Romo built this A3 in hope that it would be known at shows, and to hopefully get a magazine feature (here you go, buddy!). He also says that one day he would like to track it. But, what about those out there who have the same goal and want to build up something nice to show off? “It takes time and yes, anyone can build their dream car,” says Romo. “Sometimes you will have your ups and downs, but I never thought I’d have a car like this. I worked hard.” Oh, and one more thing: “Always drive your show car. I daily mine all the time because it’s nice and I won’t hide it in the garage.” Damn right.

M-PRESSIVE GMG WORKS ITS MAGIC ON E92 M3 STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC EIKENBERRY
long time ago in a land far, far away known as California, a small shop with a big name began building Audi and BMW race cars. Because they were very good at it, they quickly progressed from those humble beginnings to converting legendary automobiles from Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari into fullfledged, track-scalding weapons. But they never forgot their roots. One fine day, when approached by a doctor from the nearby burg of Las Vegas, they agreed to turn their attention to his E92 M3, to see what beastly changes could be performed. This is no fantasy fable. That shop is the famous Global Motorsports Group, or “GMG” as they are commonly known as, and the result is this wickedly fast 2009 M3. Naturally, some things had to go. Namely, most of the interior. The dash and paddle shifter-equipped steering wheel remain, as does the airbag and power windows. Owner Fabryce Kutyba’s technicians are alchemists, not sadists. The 1.5-inch TIG-welded OD chromoly tube safety cage is copied from BMW’s own GTR version, and has more pickup points than a crowded bar on ladies’ night, all boxed and reinforced, or course. Competition gear from Sparco and Sabelt provide secure seating arrangements. Simple aluminum panels covered with Alcantara suede hold the door release handles and power steering controls. The radio and its related amplifiers were binned along with the speakers, and a proper fire extinguisher substituted in their place. Spartan? Certainly. But flawlessly executed nonetheless. This is

not your local drag Honda’s stripped interior. It oozes class, refinement and competence. Lead technician, Sergey Zherobnenko, a major player in the planning and construction phases, has modified the drivetrain with Turner Motorsport solid mounts under the engine, transmission and differential. The entire subframe assembly has been reengineered with GMG-built heim-jointed control arms. The only notable exceptions are the massive M-Sport lower aluminum control arms. GMG turned to JRZ for a one-off set of coilovers with remote reservoirs mounted in the trunk. The coilovers use lightweight Eibach springs and attach to reinforced upper perches; the farther out the spring is placed, the smaller and lighter a spring can be for the work it performs. StopTech’s GT-spec semi-floating brakes, with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers were called to duty, along with braided steel lines, Endless RF 650 high-temp brake fluid, and Endless high-friction pads.
“WITH ROCKS PINGING CONSTANTLY OFF THE STRIPPED UNDERCARRIAGE, I GOT A TRUE SENSE OF WHAT A WORLD-CLASS DRIVER IN GT3 EXPERIENCES...”
AUGUST 2014
Performance GMG BMW_V2.indd 1
2014-05-30 4:29 PM
Special forged and machined 19-inch wheels were built, with the nine-inch wide front units weighing just 20 pounds each. The rears offer up 11 inches of meaty tire-carrying capacity. For our test day, we got to sample Hoosier R6 tires, which aren’t even remotely streetlegal, but damn if they weren’t fun to drive! With rocks pinging constantly off the stripped undercarriage, I got a true sense of what a world-class driver in GT3 experiences, in terms of noise level at least. I also got a quick taste of the power those drivers get to play with, which is something not readily apparent in a brief glance at the engine bay. The internally-modified, increasedcapacity air box is wrapped in heat-reflective gold foil, which is eye-catching and functional, but aside from that and the strut brace-mounted JRZ reservoirs, most of it appears to be standard M-Sport V8 fare. Much of the magic cannot be seen, including the custom x-pipe exhaust system
with low-restriction axle-back dual muffler design utilizing GMG’s World Challenge sport mufflers. The engine oil and the SMG transmission fluid coolers are upgraded with larger Setrab cores to deal with track-generated heat. But the biggest trick is reserved for the software, and GIAC massaged the S65B40’s engine management into a whole new realm of fun. Their motto apparently is “All violence, all the time.” With the electronic nannies deactivated, this M3 takes on an angry nature, as if it were mad at being packaged in a lowly street chassis. Every touch of the throttle is crisp, and the engine never stops pulling, even while screaming near redline. The exhaust note is a perfect basso profundo, which increases in volume up to the roar of a small jet before the SMG bangs off the next crisp upshift. Slowing down allows the software to show off, blipping the eight individual throttle bodies to perfectly

match the revs on each downshift. It truly is magic, and far more maniacal than the as-delivered M3. This is a car you tame, not drive. And that’s the difference, friends, between a tuned car and a race car, even one with a paper-thin veneer of civility such as this. Street cars limit you. Race cars don’t. They are built to be apex-seeking missiles, guided only by the Mark 1 eyeball and the best your meager reflexes can muster. There’s no fancy body kit, no giant wing, only raw speed packaged into an unassuming white shell. We have no doubt GMG could transmute its abilities into catalog-friendly bolt-on parts if they wanted to. But they won’t. Exclusivity matters. That right there might be the most impressive part of all.

RETURN TO FORM ANTHONY ANDERSON’S DROOL-WORTHY WAGON BY MICKY SLINGER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF VOSSEN
B
Between driving an Audi RS6 on the tops of the mountains of Liechtenstein during a trip to Wörthersee, and drooling over Brian Henderson’s B7 Avant build at SEMA, Anthony Anderson badly wanted to modify an Audi estate. Anderson’s Audi wagon blessing came in the form of a burnt orange 2013 A4 allroad. After taking a break from Euros to build a beautifully-bagged Infiniti G25, Anderson felt the need to go back to his comfort zone. “I loved Euros and had to go back to my roots,” explains Anderson. “I feel like no one builds wagons in the States, and for those who do, it’s a small demographic.” This build would be different for him in terms of platform, but not execution. Anderson is known for slapping on some killer wheels and bagging his builds for the perfect, head-turning fitment. 116

It’s no surprise then that he sprung for the Accuair B8 Sport kit. Pair that with 20x10.5-inch Vossen VFS2 wheels on low-pro Toyo Proxes T1 Sports for a sweet setup. The e-Level air management lies in the trunk with stainless steel hard lines that snake down and drill into the hardwood flooring, which occupies the floor of the boot as well as the rest of the allroad. GIAC Tuning recommends a performance exhaust system for full gains from their Xplus ECU tune, so AWE’s Touring Edition dual exhaust with a resonated down-pipe and
custom three-inch mid-pipe were installed to take advantage. Although audio isn’t installed at this time, a Hertz two-way system, two ES 250.2 subwoofers, a pair of HDP5 five-channel amps and Audison bit Ten signal interface processor wait in the wings to bring the noise. After attending Wörthersee this year and combing through the field, Anderson admits that a set of RS5 Recaro seats and R8 stock rotors would look right at home on his allroad. We have yet to see the last of this B8 estate, and we’re totally okay with that.

CANADIANS INVADE FORMULA DRIFT BY JACOB LEVETON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON & JEREMY ALAN GLOVER
Over the past few seasons, Formula DRIFT has continued to invite a growing number of international drivers. While the European, Asian, Australian and New Zealand drivers have garnered most of the press, the Canadian contingent is not only larger than ever, but starting to turn some heads. With Formula D launching a World Championship in 2015, there’s even talk of one round taking place in Canada. We wanted to profile the past and present Canadian drivers in Formula D, as well as take a quick look at the Formula DRIFT Canada exhibition event that is scheduled to happen later this year.
PAST
PAT CYR
ALEX LEE
IAN FOURNIER
2011 / 2012 / 2014
2011 – 2013
2010 – 2012
Pat Cyr’s battle-scarred AE86 was quite competitive in Canada, with a handful of podiums in the DMCC before heading to Formula D in 2011. Unfortunately, he got stuck in the middle of the V8 invasion and, while his S2000-powered Corolla was able to make the Top 32 in three of four rounds he attended in 2011, he wasn’t able to win a tandem battle. More recently, Cyr built the first Scion FR-S drift car in Canada; and, there are rumors his 2014 preparations will see him rejoin the FD ranks for three or four Formula D events in the U.S. once it’s dialed in.
Alex Lee initially competed in Formula D in his Toyota Cressida, but quickly moved to a second-generation Lexus GS 300. Lee earned a Top 16 finish in Seattle in his rookie year in the Cressida, but struggled to find success in his Lexus. His Chevrolet V8-powered Lexus is one of the better looking cars to come out of Canada, but failed to qualify in the three events he entered in 2013.
Ian Fournier’s four-door Skyline is one of the most unique cars on the grid. It’s also the only four-door Nissan Skyline to ever compete in Formula DRIFT. Fournier earned a Top 8 at the Irwindale season finale in 2010, making him the first Canadian driver to earn a pair of tandem victories in the same event. Lately, Fournier has been competing in local events and ProAm, but his driving style lends itself well to Formula D competition and he may make it back to the ‘big leagues’ if he can find the right sponsor.

PRESENT
2013 FORMULA DRIFT ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
DAVE BRIGGS
MATS BARIBEAU
MARC LANDREVILLE
2012 – Present
2013 – Present
2013 – Present
Dave Briggs has had a rocky start in Formula D, failing to qualify his NASCAR V8-powered 350Z in a few events before switching back to the four-cylinder S14 chassis that he previously used in DMCC competition. Last season, Briggs looked much more comfortable in the S14, even earning a Top 8 finish in Florida and matching Fournier’s Top 8 at Irwindale as the single highest finish for a Canadian driver. Briggs had a great battle with Vaughn Gittin Jr. in Long Beach to push the former champ to a onemore-time battle. Look for Briggs to continue his improvement throughout the season.
Mats Baribeau burst onto the Formula D circuit last season to take top rookie honors and is looking to continue that success this season. His engine program has been improved, and now he is pushing out more than 700 horsepower. His entire chassis is also getting a revamp for 2014, including a new steering angle kit from Figs Engineering and improved reliability all around. Baribeau’s style is a bit more conservative than others, but this should lead to fewer mistakes.
Marc Landreville earned a Top 16 appearance at his first Formula D event ever in New Jersey last season, but he was unable to put together the funds to run a full season. Landreville has an increased focus on Formula D for 2014, and has earned two Top 32 finishes in his first two events of the season. Landreville has more experience in Quebec than any other driver currently competing in Formula D.
FUTURE
FORMULA DRIFT CANADA
St. Eustache, Quebec August 31 to September 1, 2014 Formula DRIFT announced its first full-fledged competition event in Canada. Set to take place over the August 31 long weekend, Formula D professionals will face off against Canada’s top drivers in a one-event shootout with more than $10,000 in prize money on the line. While the full Formula D drivers list wasn’t confirmed at the time of press, drivers from Achilles Tire, Falken Tire and Hankook Tire are
in discussions to appear at the event. Previously, Formula D drivers have participated in exhibitions at IndyCar’s Honda Indy Toronto and Grand Prix of Edmonton, but only select drivers like Ryan Tuerck, Matt Waldin and Miro Ovcharik have competed in Canada’s former Drift Mania (DMCC) series, and never under the Formula D banner. A full drivers list will be posted at www.formuladriftcanada.com once confirmed.
With Formula D’s World Championship coming in 2015, and two or three of those rounds set to take place outside of the U.S., many have surmised that the Autodrome St. Eustache could potentially house one of those international rounds if this shootout event goes well. The site has been called ‘Canada’s House of Drift’ and the event could be the first page in the next chapter of Canadian drifting.

K
KYLE MOHAN’S V8-POWERED MAZDA RX-8 STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON
Kyle Mohan’s drifting pursuits have been synonymous with the Mazda rotary engine. Working at famed engine builder Mazdatrix made it easy for him to decide which motor would drive his drifting pursuits; the Wankel engine has been in every drift car Kyle has piloted in Formula D competition since he was a rookie in 2007. As drifting expanded globally, the need to adapt to changing conditions required Mohan to consider an option that wasn't on his radar previously: a Chevy V8. With competition increasing from the likes of Vaughn Gittin Jr., and Daigo Saito, Mohan knew the FC RX-7 he initially shipped to China in 2008 might not be up to snuff any longer. He began working on a new chassis,
122
PASMAG
and the result is the RX-8 you see here, which was completed in just six weeks. As Formula D rules have ebbed and flowed over the years, the chassis is relatively simple compared to other top-tier builds, so Mohan wanted to test out a few ideas on Chinese competition car before building his second RX-8 for the 2014 Formula D season. First, the radiator was moved to the rear to allow for better airflow in the engine bay and to help balance weight distribution. A Mishimoto dual-pass aluminum radiator was mounted in the trunk, meaning custom hard lines carry water from the engine bay to the trunk. An AIT Racing carbon scoop was molded to the roof to feed the radiator, which shares the trunk with the eight-gallon fuel cell, Radium Engineering surge tank, and Walbro in-sump fuel pump. The biggest changes were made under the hood, where the stock Renesis motor was replaced with a hulking Chevy LS1. Mohan fabricated the engine mounts and created a swap kit that is available for other RX-8 owners

interested in using a Chevy LS engine. The motor was refreshed with a plethora of OEM parts including an LS9 cam, LS6 intake manifold, LS3 timing cover and updated cam sensors, new General Motors MLS gaskets, and a new GM high horsepower oil pump. Supplementing the OEM upgrades were several aftermarket changes including a Comp Cams rocker arm install, Moroso drysump oil system, intake and exhaust porting, bowl cut valve seats, a handported throttle body, and custom accessories bracket to help with hood clearance. Power is pushed through an Exedy twin-disc clutch and lightweight flywheel to a Tex Racing four-speed dog box NASCAR transmission with custom gear ratios. Mohan’s employer Mazdatrix built a custom driveshaft, while the stock RX-8 rear end was rebuilt by Kyle Mohan Racing with 4.1, 4.44, and 4.7 final gear ratio options. Power is spun through the polished XXR 531 wheels, turning GT Radial Champiro SX2 tires in the rear, while Champiro HPY tires control the direction up front. An FD3S RX-7 steering rack was bolted in, complete with custom tie rods, spindles, and modified lower control arms for increased steering angle. Inside the RX-8, a Sparco Corsa seat and four-point harness keep Mohan in place. A mix of AEM and Autometer gauges were placed in the center console to monitor engine vitals. Mohan fabricated Kevlar dash panels to fill in the holes, and a K-Sport hydraulic E-brake is used to break the rear tires loose on command. Baker Precision braided lines and Brembo blank rotors replace the OEM units. Outside the car, the bodywork was kept simple. Carnage is common in the World Drift Series in China, so easy repairs are a must. An

AIT Racing body kit was paired with Mazdatrix / AIT Racing rear widebody flares to give the wheels plenty of room. A carbon hood and roof save weight, while a rear wing adds downforce. Just days after we shot this car, it was shipped to China for the World Drift Series. Unfortunately, shipping delays prevented the car from debuting late last year, but Mohan had the RX-8 ready for the next round and has been tearing it up since. As the first Chevy LS-powered RX-8 drift car in the world, Mohan expects to turn heads when the first World Drift Series sideways pass is made in China.

LIVE WINNER SPOCOM NorCal
JEFF ISIDRO 1999 Lexus GS 300
Jeff Isidro took top honors in the first Tuner Battlegrounds: LIVE competition at the SPOCOM NorCal event, beating out five other challengers with his pristine VIP Lexus GS 300. Coming out of Stage 1, he led the pack by just a single vote ahead of Samuel Piazza’s 2010 Chevy Camaro, a Top 8 finisher in last year’s Tuner Battlegrounds: Battle for SEMA. Isidro carried that momentum into Stage 2, recruiting fans through intensive Facebook and Instagram campaigns to vote via the LIVE text-tovote system. In the end, he
managed to edge out Piazza by just 18 votes for the title. Although his GS looks straight VIP, Isidro chose the platform because of its versatility. The interior is currently dressed in beautifully cross-stitched leather with Junction Produce treatment, and the exterior is clean and classy. Isidro hinted his future plans may include a drift or GT VIP build. We can only imagine how hot that would look. The TBG: LIVE @ SPOCOM NorCal event standings are online at www. tunerbattlegrounds.com/ standings/spocom-sanfrancisco-2014-standings.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Sexy glamour with a twist.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SHOOT? Anywhere outside – I love scenery more than anything. I can do studio shoots too, but there’s so much more character when you shoot on location. Whether it’s Downtown L.A., or somewhere in the desert, I love all the textures and colors that the camera picks up around the subject. It just seems to tell more of a story that way.
MOST MEMORABLE PHOTOSHOOT? Shooting Jesse Jane and Vida Guerra are both shoots that I had the most fun with. I’ve been a huge fan of them both for years, and it was my pleasure to be able to work with them.
