Among those wheeling the sleek machines around the circuit this weekend will be past Toronto race winners Sebastien Bourdais, Scott Dixon, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Josef Newgarden and Will Power. Dixon used the victory here last season – the third of his career at Toronto – to catapult him to a fifth season championship.
Dear INDYCAR fans:
You’ll also see Indianapolis 500 champions Tony Kanaan, Alexander Rossi, Takuma Sato and Simon Pagenaud running wheel to wheel with hometown favorite James Hinchcliffe, not to mention racing legacy names Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal.
Welcome to the Honda Indy Toronto, one of the favorite events on the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series schedule for drivers, teams and fans alike. INDYCAR is committed to providing a great fan experience this weekend through outstanding entertainment, competition and value.
The competition will be fast and furious, not to mention unpredictable. The fact that seven different drivers have won in the past 10 Toronto races is testament to that.
The Honda Indy Toronto is one of the longest-running events on our calendar. The fact that Indy cars are into their fourth decade competing on the streets around Exhibition Place speaks volumes to the success of the event and to you, the fans, who annually make this one of the preferred stops for us.
In addition to the NTT IndyCar Series competition this weekend, you can see our stars of tomorrow in action. All three levels of the Road to Indy presented by Cooper Tires – the INDYCAR-sanctioned development ladder for drivers and teams – are racing on the streets of Toronto as well.
This weekend’s race is the 11th of a demanding 17-race NTT IndyCar Series schedule that is the most diverse in motorsports – consisting of events on urban temporary street courses such as Toronto, permanent road courses like Road America and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, short ovals such as Iowa Speedway and superspeedway ovals like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Indy cars first competed in Toronto in 1986 and this year’s event will mark the 35th race here, so it is truly one of the crown jewels on the INDYCAR calendar.
While here, we invite you to take in a driver autograph session to get a signature or photo with your favorite INDYCAR drivers. And don’t forget to download the INDYCAR Mobile app powered by NTT DATA on your smartphone to get behind-the-scenes features to help you follow the race. Also, follow the NTT IndyCar Series online at IndyCar.com, on Facebook and on Twitter (@IndyCar). Thank you for your continued support of this great event and of INDYCAR. We truly appreciate your attendance this weekend. We’re glad you can experience the speed, action and excitement that define the NTT IndyCar Series.
Whether this is your first INDYCAR race or you’re a savvy, veteran fan, we’re excited for you to witness the incredible on-track action. We invite you to take in as much as possible and enjoy it all.
Enjoy the weekend!
The NTT IndyCar Series car – the Dallara IR-12 chassis powered by 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engines from Chevrolet and Honda – features the universal aerodynamic bodywork kit used by all entrants that debuted last season and has drawn rave reviews for its flashy look and placing driver skill at the forefront.

SEASON TO DATE T
he competition continues to get tighter and more exciting in the NTT IndyCar Series. Through the first half of the 2019 season, no fewer than six different drivers have reached victory lane – setting up what should be another thrilling Honda Indy Toronto, not to mention the rest of the season. Here is a recap of the season to date through the REV Group Grand Prix presented by AMR at Road America on June 23.
FIRESTONE GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG
History was made in more than one way at Circuit of The Americas this weekend. In addition to the INDYCAR Classic bring the first NTT IndyCar Series race at the renowned track in Austin, Texas, Colton Herta became the youngest driver to win an Indy car event. The beneficiary of an opportune full-course caution period, Herta led the final 15 laps and won by 2.7182 seconds over Josef Newgarden. At 18 years, 359 days old, the secondgeneration driver became the
MARCH 10
When Josef Newgarden ran longer, harder and faster in a middle stint of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, it paid off with victory at the end. Newgarden kicked off the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season victorious by 2.8998 seconds over reigning series champion Scott Dixon. It was the 11th triumph of Newgarden’s eight-year career but first on

The win by Newgarden extended Team Penske’s run of success at St. Petersburg to nine victories in the event’s 16-race history. It was also the 204th win all time by the Indy car team, most in the sport, and returned Chevrolet atop the podium after the engine supplier went winless on temporary street circuits last season.
the 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary street course that incorporates a runway of Albert Whitted Airport. “I feel like we executed today,” Newgarden said. “We were very patient in the beginning of the race. We had a different tire strategy again today, and it really paid off. I actually think it’s what helped us create the opportunity.”

youngest to win an Indy car race, breaking the mark previously held by Graham Rahal, who was 19 years, 93 days when he won at St. Petersburg in 2008. The race was just the third in the NTT IndyCar Series for Herta, who finished second in the 2018 Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires championship before moving up to Harding Steinbrenner Racing this year. Herta was humbled to join the list of Indy car race winners that includes his father, Bryan, who had four victories in a 12-year Indy car career and is now co-owner and race strategist for the car driven by Marco Andretti. “Just to be up with the names of people that have won (a) race, I’m going to live and die an Indy car winner, which is spectacular in itself,” Herta said. “Yeah, it’s a great record at a young age. To be standing up here kind of feels surreal. “We were not expecting (to win). I think we were going to get a podium (top-three finish) – I think we had the pace for that – but holy crap, man! … It’s spectacular!”

HONDA INDY GRAND PRIX OF ALABAMA APRIL 7
Takuma Sato drove flawlessly – almost – to win the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by AmFirst and throw his name firmly into the NTT IndyCar Series championship conversation. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver made Scott Dixon a Barber Motorsports Park bridesmaid for a record sixth time, beating the reigning series champion to the finish line by 2.3874 seconds. It was the fourth win of Sato’s 10year NTT IndyCar Series career, with the 42-year-old from Tokyo becoming the third different driver – each from a different team – to pull into victory lane in three races this season. “This is because of the team, they did a fantastic effort,” Sato said. “My car was superb!
“It’s probably the cleanest race I ever won. ... I think we come here with the hopes, always do, but honestly never really, really expected to be this much of a domination.” Starting from pole position after winning the NTT P1 Award the day before, Sato led 74 of 90 laps on the 17-turn, 2.3-mile permanent road course that hosted the NTT IndyCar Series for a 10th straight year.
ACURA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH APRIL 14
Al Unser Jr. may be “King of the Beach,” but Alexander Rossi is driving toward INDYCAR racing royalty at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. For the second straight year on the iconic NTT IndyCar Series street course, Rossi dominated the competition. The Andretti Autosport driver led all but five of 85 laps from the pole position to become the first back-to-back winner at Long Beach since Sebastien Bourdais won three in a row from 2005-07. “We were able to get a race car I was really happy with,” Rossi said. “Winning the pole is huge come Sunday because it allows you to hopefully be in front leaving Turn 1 and
really just control the race from there.” Driving the No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda, Rossi cruised across the finish line 20.2359 seconds ahead of Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden – the largest margin of victory at Long Beach since Unser Jr. captured one of his record six Long Beach victories by more than 23 seconds in 1995. Four of Rossi’s six NTT IndyCar Series career victories have now come when the 27-year-old Californian started from the pole position. The win also moved him into second place in the 2019 championship standings after four of 17 races, trailing Newgarden by 28 points.

INDYCAR GRAND PRIX
103RD INDIANAPOLIS 500 PRESENTED BY GAINBRIDGE
MAY 11
Simon Pagenaud overcame the elements and the competition to win the INDYCAR Grand Prix in thrilling fashion. Pagenaud passed five-time NTT IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon for the lead on the next-to-last lap on a rain-soaked Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and pulled away to collect the 12th victory of his Indy car career. “What a way to start May!” said Pagenaud, who won his third INDYCAR Grand Prix by 2.0469 seconds. “The car was fantastic; the car was awesome all day. We had something for everybody.” Starting eighth in the 85-lap race that ran from start to finish in varying levels of rain, Pagenaud charged from sixth place in the final 18 laps in treacherous conditions to collect his first win since the 2017 season finale. When Dixon, the reigning series champion, slid a little wide exiting Turn 7 on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn circuit, Pagenaud dove his No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet inside Dixon’s No.
MAY 26
Simon Pagenaud completed his May mission with the biggest win of his racing life, capturing the 103rd Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in a duel for the ages and extending Team Penske’s dominance at “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Pagenaud edged Alexander Rossi by 0.2086 of a second following a thrilling clash over the final 14 laps on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval that had the crowd at the world’s largest single-day sporting event on its feet and screaming with excitement. It was the seventh-closest finish
9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. The two cars made light side-to-side contact in the series of corners before Pagenaud exited Turn 9 in front. “It was a matter of being in the right position,” Pagenaud said. “I pushed all race. When the rain came, I wasn’t sure it was going to work. Surprisingly, it was just the best out there. When Dixon was really struggling with his tires, you could see that. “I was just braking as deep as I could to catch him. I wasn’t really planning on passing him there. He made a slight mistake.”
in Indianapolis 500 history. “It’s amazing. It’s another dream come true, and the biggest dream of my life come true,” said Pagenaud, a 35-year-old native of Montmorillon, France. “It’s hard to fathom, really. It’s really hard to process it right now, but I’m just filled with a lot of joy.” Pagenaud and Rossi swapped the lead five times in the closing laps, the last when Pagenaud roared his bright yellow No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet outside of and past Rossi’s No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda heading into Turn 3 on the 199th of 200 laps. From there, Pagenaud wasn’t to be denied in collecting his first Indy 500 triumph and 13th career NTT IndyCar Series victory. On the heels of his win May 11 in the INDYCAR Grand Prix on the IMS road course, Pagenaud became the first driver to win more than one NTT IndyCar Series race this season and second Team Penske pilot to win both IMS races in the same year – following Will Power in 2018. Rossi, the 2016 Indy 500 winner as a rookie, overcame two lengthy pit stops for refueling issues, charging back from midpack to contend for the win. But he couldn’t get around Pagenaud after the decisive pass.
CHEVROLET DETROIT GRAND PRIX PRESENTED BY LEAR, RACE 1 JUNE 1
A timely pit stop catapulted Josef Newgarden to victory in the rainshortened opener of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear doubleheader, as well as back into the NTT IndyCar Series championship lead. Newgarden won the race by 0.8237 of a second over Alexander Rossi and capped a perfect day at Belle Isle Park for team owner Roger Penske, whose team also won the IMSA sports

Jones’ car slid into a tire barrier in Turn 7. “I think when we pitted was the right time to pit,” Newgarden said. “You could tell the rain tires were starting to go off, the rears were overheating terribly because it was getting dry. We pitted at the right time and the yellow helped us even further. It was a great call.” Newgarden was
car race in the weekend event promoted by Penske’s group. Newgarden made his lone pit stop of the 75-minute race on Lap 17, among the first drivers to switch from Firestone’s grooved rain tires to dry-condition slicks. As Newgarden entered pit lane, a full-course caution was called when Ed

never headed over the final 25 laps. It resulted in the 12th win of the Tennessean’s eight-year NTT IndyCar Series career and second this season. The start of the race was delayed more than an hour after a thunderstorm moved through the area. INDYCAR adjusted the race from its scheduled 70 laps to a timed event, with 43 laps completed when the checkered flag waved for Newgarden.

On the same day he was bestowed an honor by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Scott Dixon wrote another chapter in his royal Indy car history. And took a majestic dip in the Scott Fountain to celebrate. Dixon recovered from a crash and last-place finish the day before to win the second race of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear doubleheader. The victory was the 45th of the five-time NTT IndyCar Series champion’s career and moved Dixon within seven wins of tying Mario Andretti for second on the all-time Indy car list. Dixon crossed the Raceway at Belle Isle Park finish line 1.9419 seconds ahead of rookie Marcus Ericsson, who posted his first podium finish. Before the race, it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II appointed Dixon the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his services to motorsports. It came as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognizing achievements of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom. Dixon’s native New Zealand is part of the British Commonwealth.
DXC TECHNOLOGY 600 JUNE 8
Josef Newgarden came seemingly from nowhere to win the latest electrifying NTT IndyCar Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. The 2019 championship leader fended off Alexander Rossi over the final 10 laps to capture the DXC Technology 600. by 0.8164 of a second and collect his 13th career win, third this season and first on a superspeedway. “Feels awesome to win here,” Newgarden said. “I knew we’d get it done here at some point. We’ve had fast cars (but) it never has materialized. Tonight, it happened.” Starting seventh in the 22-car field, Newgarden didn’t
lead until Lap 190 of the 248-lap event on the 1.5-mile, high-banked oval. A lightningquick final pit stop on Lap 198, accompanied by equally fast laps before and after the stop, put the 28-year-old Tennessean in position to retake the lead on the 202nd lap, and he never surrendered it. “I knew once we pitted and basically got back to where we were before the pit stop on the green-flag sequence, we had such a fuel advantage on everybody,” Newgarden said. “If we could get to the lead, I could crank out super-quick laps and jump everybody. That’s what we did.”
a huge testament to the whole organization.” Starting second, Rossi passed pole sitter Colton Herta on the first of 55 laps around the 14-turn, 4.014-mile Wisconsin road course and was never
headed. The only lap Rossi didn’t lead came on the last of his three pit stops in the caution-free race. He returned to the top of the leaderboard when Graham Rahal made his last stop a lap later.
REV GROUP GRAND PRIX AT ROAD AMERICA JUNE 23
For Alexander Rossi, an utterly dominant drive to victory in the REV Group Grand Prix presented by AMR was just the tonic he needed. The Andretti Autosport driver led every lap but one Road America’s demanding, high-speed permanent circuit, winning by 28.4391 seconds over Will Power. It gave Rossi a second commanding victory in the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season and the seventh of his four-year career. More impor-
tantly, it closed the 27-year-old Californian within seven points of the championship lead with seven races remaining. “It was probably one of the best race cars I’ve ever had,” Rossi said of his No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda. “We have been quick through the whole season, but we just haven’t really had it come our way as many times as we want, for one reason or another. To come out and be able to do what we did today is

ake a racing star from Oakville, Ontario, add his boyhood pal and fellow racer from Guelph, Ontario, bring them together on an NTT IndyCar Series team co-owned by a man from Calgary, Alberta and the result is “Team Canada.” This year, “Team Canada” has added a little bit of Swedish flavor to the mix. of Toronto at Ontario Place for the annual Honda Indy Toronto. It’s an event Hinchcliffe attended for the first time when he was 18 months old in 1988 and has been at the race every year it has been contested (there was no race at Toronto in 2008). Robert Wickens of Guelph raced at Toronto last year. He is currently recovering from a spinal injury sustained in a wicked crash at Pocono Raceway on August 19, 2018. He has made significant progress in

his recovery with hopes of one day returning to racing. Meantime, he remains a key member of “Team Canada.” Ric Peterson of Calgary co-owns the team along with former IndyCar Series race driver Sam Schmidt. Arrow has increased its involvement from team sponsor to team partner this year. New to the team is former Formula One driver Marcus Ericsson of Sweden. He made 97 F1 starts before joining Arrow Schmidt
Peterson for the 2019 season. A quick learner, Ericsson finished second to race winner Scott Dixon in the second race of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix on June 2. The 28-year-old Ericsson has earned “honorary status” as a member of “Team Canada” by the leader of the team, Hinchcliffe. “Sweden is like the Canada of Europe – super nice people, they are OK with Winter, they like hockey, they use Snowshoes and

they are good at recycling,” Hinchcliffe said. “It’s been great to have him on the team. Of the guys I’ve met coming over from Europe, specifically on the F1 side of things, he came over with more of an open mind and a desire to learn and be a part of it than anyone else. “Other drivers that have come from F1, think it’s a backwards step approach. It’s not until they get in the cars and see how much fun they are to drive, how close the racing is, they see how close the community is, their attitude really changes. “Marcus showed up with a great attitude and I think his appreciation for the series is high and has gotten even greater. He put out a really nice message after the 500 on his social media about starting to understand just how spectacular of an

“He’s an honorary Canadian now, except when it comes to hockey,” Hinchcliffe said. “He’s not good enough for that.” event it is and the magnitude of it. All of the drivers talk about the Month of May and the buildup to it and not really getting what all the fuss was about. “Now, he has a whole new appreciation for it. “He’s been a tremendous asset to the team from a morale point of view, from a technical point of view, he’s been great.” Ericsson has fit in perfectly with the team. He is a former F1 driver who is willing to learn the much different form of racing in IndyCar. And, he is also learning the unique culture of Canada. “We both love hockey, both countries do,” Ericsson said. “Fortunately for me we usually beat the Canadians.” Hinchcliffe jumped in and said, “Blatantly not true. Anybody with a Google can tell you that’s a complete lie.” Ericsson replied, “All right, we can agree to disagree on that. I think so far, it’s all good guys in our team. It’s been working really good.” Hinchcliffe paid Ericsson with a compliment, especially since the driver entered the June race at Texas Motor Speedway with the highest finish of the season for “Team Canada” with his second-place at Detroit.
“He’s an honorary Canadian now, except when it comes to hockey,” Hinchcliffe said. “He’s not good enough for that.” Ironically, “Team Canada” is based in Indianapolis – the “Crossroads of America” and the home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500.

Peterson joined forces with Schmidt several years ago to create one of Honda’s top NTT IndyCar Series teams. One of the biggest races of the year for this team is the annual street race at Exhibition Place – the Honda Indy Toronto. “It is big for us,” Peterson said. “It’s a super busy weekend for us because there is so much going on and our drivers get pulled in every direction. It’s an important race for us. We haven’t won it yet, but we plan on doing that this year. “Marcus fits in like a Canadian. And we can’t say enough about how important Robert Wickens is to our team, even though he is not driving this season. “I don’t think people know how much we really do miss Robert. He was very, very important to this team and he still is when he comes back. It’s very important because Robert is an inspiration to the whole team, but also a big help to Marcus and his first

year in IndyCar. Robert has been a big help to him. We really like having him around.” Hinchcliffe and Wickens have been friends for years, back to their boyhood days when they were both competed in Karting. By watching Wickens make tremendous improvement in his recovery, Hinchcliffe admits it helps him keep his life in perspective. “It’s funny, people used to say that about me, I say that about him, and he says that about people he sees at rehab,” Hinchcliffe said. “It’s all relative. For me, Robby’s attitude towards this whole thing has been such a huge part of his rehabilitation, but also the people close to him coping with it. “I don’t see it any more. There was a picture of him from the Indy 500 Banquet, Him and Carly standing on the Red Carpet. It took me a second to see him as standing. I don’t see him as sitting or standing, I see him as Robby. I’m happy we are at that point and I think he is comfortable at that point.
“He is going to keep pushing. He is going to walk one day and I’m almost not going to be that surprised. I’ll be happy; but not that surprised.” Wickens has attended several NTT IndyCar Series races this season, including the season-opener at St. Petersburg, Florida and the entire “Month of May” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“He is going to keep pushing. He is going to walk one day and I’m almost not going to be that surprised. I’ll be happy; but not that surprised.”

Wickens will be at Toronto to help support the efforts of “Team Canada” in this big event for Canada’s largest city. “On track, if not on track, Robby is still a huge part of this team,” Hinchcliffe explained. “To have two Canadian drivers and a Canadian team owner, it’s pretty special. It’s a one in a million odds thing that we would both end up in the same organization. For us, there is an added passion to racing there, in our backyard, for Robby and myself and being in Canada for Ric Peterson. “I’m excited for Marcus to get there and see it for the first time. I think he will love the city and love the event. “It’s important for all of us as the unofficial Team Canada to give the Canadians a good result to cheer for.”

TOP 5 THINGS That Make
HONDA INDY TORONTO GREAT
HONDA FAN FRIDAY PRESENTED BY ONTARIO HONDA DEALERS ASSOCIATION On Friday, July 12th, as the gates open for the 2019 Honda Indy Toronto, you will be greeted by a smiling volunteer in a blue shirt holding a bucket. They’ll extend the bucket out to you. Stop for a moment and drop a couple coins or a bill into it, and they will thank you for helping a child in need over the roar of the engines. Then, you will get to experience everything the motorsports festival has to offer due to your voluntary donation. This is Honda Fan Friday presented by the Ontario Honda Dealers Association. An awesome day, for the 10th year running, where fans from all over the Greater Toronto
1
Area can gain entry to the Honda Indy Toronto simply by making a voluntary donation in support of Make-A-Wish Canada. There will be no shortage of on and off-track entertainment, and the grandstands will be open for patrons to enjoy throughout the day. Over the last nine years, Honda Indy Toronto has raised over $690,000 for Make-A-Wish Canada, with the Honda Canada Foundation matching each Honda Fan Friday donation dollar for dollar. At Honda World, those looking to contribute to Make-A-Wish Canada further can enter a raffle with many unique prizes to be won, or fans can sign Canadian James Hinchcliffe’s firesuit - the same suit he will put on before Sunday’s big NTT IndyCar Series race.

4 TORONTO SKYLINE With a population of 2.93 million people, it sounds like an exaggeration that an IndyCar race would be right in the middle of the busy city, but alas, that is exactly what we have done with the CN Tower peaking over the Princes’ Gates as festival-goers congregate onto Exhibition Place.
2 HONDA CANADA Going on 11 years together, the partnership between Honda Canada and the Honda Indy Toronto has never been stronger. Honda’s fingerprints can be found all over the festival, from the Honda Speed Zone, Honda World and the Honda Junior Red Riders. It is a sea of Honda red. In the Honda SpeedZone, you will find interactive games from Toronto’s favourite sports teams, Honda’s misting tent, inflatables, complementary cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn presented by Honda and so much more to keep your children smiling and happy all weekend long. At Honda World, those looking to contribute to Make-A-Wish Canada further can enter the Make-A-Wish Canada raffle which many unique prizes to be won or fans can sign Canadian James Hinchcliffe’s firesuit - the same suit he will put on before Sunday’s big NTT Data IndyCar Series race. Right next door, the Honda Junior Red Riders - a place where your little ones can test their dirt biking skills in the middle of a race track!
3 PADDOCK ACCESS The open access in the NTT IndyCar Series is unprecedented in motorsports. The Paddock is like the “locker room of motorsports” by comparison to hockey, football, basketball or baseball. It is better known as the garage area in the racing industry. Whenever the cars are not on the race track during an event weekend, they will be found inside the Paddock. Race teams are assigned a space for housing each car and accompanying equipment, and the impressive, purposebuilt transporter trucks transform into a fully functional temporary garage for a race weekend. A real hub of buzzing activity, this is where all of the backstage action goes down. Race teams and drivers use this area as their ‘office’ for the weekend. Team meetings are held to strategize and review performance while mechanics vigorously make precise adjustments to the cars between on-track sessions, looking for every little tweak to improve the cars performance.

5 FESTIVAL OF FOOD While festival staples Tim Hortons, Pizza Pizza and Pinty’s Bar and Grill will be available all weekend long, Honda Indy Toronto, in partnership with the Food Dudes, is very excited to bring the Truck Stop again. A variety of different cuisines will be available to sample each day. Some must-eat food trucks are: Food Dudes - of course! Smoke’s Poutine - a Toronto favourite! Dang Good BBQ - all things barbeque Get Your Own Taters - Tater tots for everyone Kitchen Empire - Specializes in comfort food HK Food Station - Japanese cuisine And many more waiting to be tasted!

LP DUMOULIN’S Fight to Make Pinty’s Series History
WHEN LP DUMOULIN STARTED HIS NASCAR CAREER IN 2009, LITTLE WAS KNOWN ABOUT THE FORMER OPEN-WHEEL AND GRAND-AM STAR. AS TIME PROGRESSED, DUMOULIN WOULD START TO CEMENT HIMSELF AS NOT JUST A SERIES MAINSTAY, BUT AS A FIERCE COMPETITOR WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT. By Alex Gallacher // Photography by LAT Images

umoulin started 2018 with a bang. In the season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP), he put his No.47 WeatherTech Canada / Bellemare Dodge in victory lane for the first time since his first championship season in 2014. As the weeks went by, his car consistently improved. Scoring only one finish outside the top ten all season long, it was clear Dumoulin was a favourite for the title. “There are some wins that you get by dominating the race,” said Dumoulin. “That race we had a really good car starting up front. But we had some issues with that car. My shifter knob broke early on in the race and my shoe got caught under the throttle. Then the windshield brace just broke. We had a lot of stuff happen and I just said ‘OK if we can bring this thing home on the podium, I’ll be happy with it.’ “At one point Ranger was coming with much fresher tires. I had something for Lacroix but when I saw Ranger coming I just had to stay with the leaders and wait to see what was going to happen. I was there to take advantage of late race problems and we won the race. For all of the problems we had, the many years before and the journey we have had building our own team, it really tasted good even if we really stole it at the end. “A win is a win,” Dumoulin added “It’s always great no matter what. That win
really helped create some momentum for the season and really took the pressure off our shoulders, now we are back in the Winner’s Circle and now we can compete for more wins.” A deciding point of the season came in the strong growth of Dumoulin Competition’s oval track program. This program made an immediate impact with Dumoulin scoring two oval track wins while giving himself a chance to win a few more as well. For a driver who had previously been known for his road course skill, his team’s improvements in the oval track program made Dumoulin a serious threat week in and week out. With a majority of the season taking place on the tight confines of bullrings across the country, Dumoulin knew the importance of a strong oval track car. “The two oval wins were a big deal but we also had contending runs going on in Chaudiere and Saskatoon” said Dumoulin. “I think all season long I felt that I had a strong oval car. We have 13 races through the season and four of them are on road courses and nine are on ovals. So it’s really important to be good on these types of tracks. “Knowing that my car was good on the ovals, made me feel great. To win again this season was a testament to the very hard work we did years before to got into the Winner’s Circle. We were building the

NASCAR PINTY’S 2019 SEASON IS OFF TO A ROARING START! Fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of NASCAR Pinty’s since the 2018 season wrapped up at Jukasa, and this year’s races have not disappointed!
CASTROL VICTORIA DAY SPEEDFEST
CANADIAN TIRE MOTORSPORT PARK
The 2019 season opened at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with the traditional Clarington 200 race that marks the start of the race season for so many. The season opener saw the return of some familiar faces to the Pinty’s line up, including Jason Hathaway and Alex Labbé. With a full 23 cars registered to race, it was bound to be an action-packed race. Gary Klutt got his weekend off to a great start, setting a new track record and qualifying for the pole. Some of the credit for the faster overall track times went to the new General Tire tires, which build up grip faster then the previous tires. Kevin Lacroix, who qualified second, also beat the previous track record for a strong second qualifying position. The race got off to a strong start but the 22 Racing team faced disappointment early, when Alex Tagliani shredded a right tire on lap two. David Thorndyke also had a frustrating race, with a fuel pump issue that saw him complete only 12 laps. In the end, the podium was a trio of familiar faces: Lacroix, Ranger and Klutt. Lacroix’s late tire change pit strategy paid off and he was able to make a dramatic pass of Ranger in the final laps of the race. The Bumper to Bumper team was especially excited as last year they had been thwarted in their late pass attempt and had had to be satisfied with a second place finish.
APC 200
JUKASA SPEEDWAY
After heavy rain forced a race delay, it was Andrew Ranger who took the checkered flag at the first oval of the season. Ranger took the lead on lap 122 and survived a late charge from Lacroix who took advantage of a late restart to press forward in the field. The race saw NASCAR Pinty’s history made with the first lap ever led by a female driver - Julia Landauer led lap 72 and was up front for most of the race before suffering a late race crash moved her down to 15th.

“Many people have put a lot of hard work in to support me throughout my career in order to win this championship” team and building a lot of equipment in the early days, and while we were getting a lot of podiums we were not getting a lot of wins. To get the car and the team into a winning position, it gave me and the whole team a boost of confidence.” When the checkered flag finally flew for the season-ending Pinty’s Fall Brawl at Jukasa Motor Speedway, it was all smiles for Dumoulin and his team. Outlasting a grueling points battle with the likes of Alex Tagliani and Cole Powell, 2018 was a showcase for Dumoulin. Scoring a careerhigh three wins (CTMP-1, Edmonton, Riverside), eight top fives and 12 top tens, Dumoulin capped off another dream season. Clinching his second Pinty’s Series title he edged out Alex Tagliani by a slim margin of 7 points. Winning the championship in any sport is never a solo effort. Any race car driver
knows that the support system required to race in a sport like NASCAR can be astronomical. For Dumoulin, he credits his success to a long list people whom he couldn’t have done it without. “Many people have put a lot of hard work in to support me throughout my career in order to win this championship,” Dumoulin said. “This has meant so much to me. For my family and friends and all the people who have been supporting me and always cheering for me in the good or hard days, it was a little bit of a heads up saying ‘Hey, that’s why we never give up, why we work hard, why we go through tough stuff and just keep on digging and here we go.’” “That was an awesome year. That’s one thing, you do it for your friends and family and for the people who have been supporting you in the past.”

BUDWISER 300 AUTODROME CHAUDIĂˆRE
The Budwiser 300 saw a rookie atop the podium, with Raphael Lessard securing the win in his debut appearance. This was an especially remarkable feat, given that the last time a driver claimed the checkered flag in their debut was at the inaugural NASCAR Pinty’s Series race in 2007 (Don Thomson Jr). Lessard, who is only 17, grew up minutes from Autodrome Chaudiere and was thrilled with the results. This one race partnership saw the Kyle Busch Motorsports and Toyota Racing Development driver work with a new crew and car. Despite the inherent challenges of a new set up and team, Lessard was still able to dominate, leading from lap 137 until the race was called for rain at lap 286. The rest of the top five were familiar faces, including Kevin Lacroix who finished second for his third straight podium finish. Thanks to consistently strong showings, he is now in the points lead going into the Toronto race weekend. Alex Labbe started from pole position but would have to be satisfied with a third place finish. Andrew Ranger and Alex Tagliani rounded out the top five.

ore than 140 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires competitors have graduated to the NTT IndyCar Series since the advent of what was initially known as the American Racing Series in 1986, including all but three of the 33 series champions. There seems little doubt that this year’s two primary contenders, Oliver Askew, 22, from Jupiter, Fla., and Rinus VeeKay, 18, from Hoofddorp, Netherlands, are set to follow in their footsteps. Despite being separated by almost four years in age, the two former stars of the karting world have been vying for supremacy since making the switch to cars in 2017. They locked horns firstly in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship,

wherein Askew emerged victorious, then again last year in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, when it was VeeKay’s turn to hold the upper hand. VeeKay and his family had attracted support from the Dutch motorsports federation, as well as some well-established sponsors, to take the first step onto the acclaimed Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires. His preparation included a full slate of testing and a preliminary attack on the MRF Formula 2000 Championship in India prior to the start of the 2017 North American season. Unsurprisingly, he hit the ground running with three podium finishes in his first three starts. VeeKay came upon a buzz-saw combination in the form of Askew and Cape Motorsports, but second place in the championship, with three wins and 12 podiums from just 14 races, clearly marked him as a future star. VeeKay built upon that platform in 2018. He swept both Indy Pro 2000 races on his debut at St. Petersburg, Fla., and ended the season a convincing champion for Juncos Racing. His reward was a scholarship prize to make the move into Indy Lights for 2019. Once again the amiable Dutchman has made a strong start with two victories from the opening six races. For Askew, the route to Indy Lights was rather more complicated. Neither he nor his family held any connections in the car racing industry. He didn’t have any significant sponsorship to his name, either. But he found a way to open a few doors and create some crucial opportunities. Askew’s first step was to earn a Team USA Scholarship, which allowed him to meet some influential insiders and
Dalton Kellett looks to impress in front of his home crowd.
impress during two end-of-season Formula Ford events in England. More importantly, he secured an entry into the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout. Askew once again stepped up to the plate by claiming the top prize and ensuring a future for himself in USF2000. Six wins from the opening seven races set him on course to win the championship and another Mazda Scholarship to graduate into Indy Pro 2000 for 2018. The year, from his perspective, was disappointing with only one win, three poles and third place in the final points table, but he had done enough to attract the attention of Andretti Autosport, the season’s dominant Indy Lights team, and ink a contract for 2019. Askew hasn’t looked back. He began with a podium at St. Petersburg and seemed poised to score his first win in Round Two after qualifying on pole position, only to find himself parked heavily against the wall Robert Megennis took pole for Andretti Autosport in Indianapolis.

in Turn Two following contact with arch-rival VeeKay. Undaunted, Askew bounced back to win twice at Circuit of The Americas, then gained the points lead with a thrilling victory in the Freedom 100 Presented by Cooper Tires in front of a huge Carb Day crowd at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Askew and VeeKay will continue their battle for supremacy this weekend in a pair of races which will comprise the Cooper Tires Grand Prix Presented by Allied Building Products to commence the second half of an 18-round campaign. There are plenty of other potential winners from among the small but highquality field, too, including Askew’s two talented teammates, Robert Megennis, from New York, N.Y., who scored his first win for Andretti Autosport on the Indianapolis Grand Prix road course, and Ryan Norman, from Aurora, Ohio, who led most laps in the Freedom 100 before finishing mere inches behind Askew on the dash to the checkered flag. Dalton Kellett, originally from Stouffville, Ont., and a graduate of Queen’s University, will surely have plenty of local support as he pilots a second Juncos Racing DallaraAER alongside VeeKay. David Malukas, from Chicago, Ill., is the youngest driver in the field at age 17 but has already carved quite a reputation for himself by securing a podium finish on his USF2000 debut at Road America in 2017 and a pair of dominant Indy Pro 2000 wins at the same venue last year. The transition to Indy Lights has proven difficult but Malukas already has one podium finish to this credit and has clearly benefited from the skills of BN/Team Pelfrey stablemate Toby Sowery, from Cambridge, England, who began his Indy Lights career with a pair of podium finishes at St. Petersburg.

he Red Deer, Alberta native will drive the No. 8 Abel Motorsports Tatuus PM-18 in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires this weekend, the second rung on the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires ladder. The Road to Indy is the premier development ladder system in the world, awarding scholarships to the champions of each of the three series to help the drivers (and teams as well) progress up the ladder. The winner of the top rung of the ladder, the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires series, will earn a scholarship package into the 2020 NTT IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500, which is Thompson’s ultimate goal. 2019 marks the fifth straight year that Thompson has raced on the streets of Toronto and for the popular Canadian, racing in his home country is one of the season highlights – as it is for fans from all over Canada who call Thompson their own. “It means everything, to carry the home country flag,” said Thompson. “I wait 12 months to return here every year, as do all the fans I’ve built here over the past four years. And for my partners, all of whom are from Canada, it’s our most important race weekend. I want to go out and give the people of Toronto the races they deserve!” Thompson has been involved in the championship fight in all four of his Road
to Indy seasons, finishing a close second to his teammate in the 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship, and second to Rinus VeeKay in the 2018 Indy Pro 2000 title chase. He currently lies in fourth position in the Indy Pro 2000 championship, with a sweep of both pole positions and both victories at the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. (coincidentally, the only other street course on the series’ schedule). Thompson hopes that this is the year he can break through for that elusive title win, and the chance to race in Indy Lights. “I’ve had some bad luck that took away some of my chances at the scholarships but it’s what keeps me coming back, and what keeps my partners coming back to support the series and my career. I wouldn’t have a shot at Indy Lights without the scholarship. This is the only developmental series in the world that gives back to the drivers

on every level of the ladder: not just a trophy and a handshake, but support. Hopefully one day I can reap the benefits!” But two formula car races this weekend aren’t enough for Thompson. The talented driver has earned considerable success in his first season of sports car racing, contesting both the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA and Canada this year. Thompson holds second place in both series, with five podiums in six races in GT3 US (including a victory at Mid-Ohio) and three podiums in four races in GT3 Canada (including the most recent event on the streets of Montréal, in support of the Formula One race). Thompson will contest two Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada races on the streets of Toronto in the No. 3 SCB Racing Porsche, making for one busy weekend. And how different are the two cars? Very, says Thompson – especially when jumping between them on the same day. “These two cars are about as opposite as you can get – though I’m not telling the team owners that! One is a 2500-pound sports car with 500 horsepower and the other is a light, nimble, 300-horsepower formula car. I’m not sure you could find two more completely different cars that require two totally different driving styles, and drive them on the same weekend! I’ve got a good-sized task ahead of me, doing a reset every time I get into the car to go out and perform my best. I’ve had two double header weekends in sports cars (Thompson also drives an Audi R8 LMS GT4 in the Canadian Touring Car Championship) but not combining the two. I’ve done back to back tests so I have an idea of what I’m up against, but hopefully that experience has prepared me.” Thompson knows the focus required not just to compete but to win in both cars this weekend. He plans to put his head fully into the game in order to bring home maximum points for both championships. “I have had good success on the street courses this year, with two wins at the Grand Prix of St. Pete and a podium at Montréal. So I know what it’s like to drive both cars in these conditions. I envision just bouncing back and forth between two cars all weekend long, shutting out the world and going to work in a race car. It will be such a busy weekend on the race track but hopefully I can come away with strong finishes – and hopefully four wins. I’m eager to take on the challenge!”

McElrea will be hell-bent on setting that record straight and finally claiming his first win, but he will be pushed hard by teammates Colin Kaminsky, from Homer Glen, Ill., who has shown excellent speed this year, Brazil’s Bruna Tomaselli, the only female in the field, and rookie Yuven Sundaramoorthy. Others to keep an eye on include Australian teenager Cameron Shields, who convincingly won on the Lucas Oil Raceway oval for Newman Wachs Racing; Frenchman Alex Baron, who finished second on the oval for Legacy Autosport and won two races last year; the pair of DEForce Racing Tatuus USF-17s piloted by Manuel Sulaiman, from Mexico City, who already has a brace of podium finishes to his name and yet another 14-year-old, Jak Crawford, from Houston, Texas, who stunned onlookers by finishing fourth in two of his first three races for DEForce Racing; and another former karting star, Christian Rasmussen, from Denmark, who displayed impressive form while making his debut on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., earlier this year for the Jay Howard Driver Development team.
his rookie campaign in North America. McElrea has taken to the Tatuus USF17 like a duck to water, finishing on the podium in four of the first five races this season. Even so, he has found himself ranged against another extraordinarily talented rookie in Braden Eves, who won the opening four races on the bounce to take a commanding early championship lead. Eves, 20, from New Albany, Ohio, made an impressive one-off appearance at the end of 2018. Since then he has joined reigning and multiple championshipwinning team Cape Motorsports alongside series veteran Darren Keane, from Boca Raton, Fla., and Puerto Rico-based Reece Gold, who is one of no fewer than three 14-year-olds in the series this year. Keane has been fast but almost totally bereft of any good fortune during the opening five races of the season. Nevertheless, he has bounced back to third in the points table and is sure to be a leading contender in this weekend’s Cooper Tires Grand Prix Presented by Allied Building Products. An intensely competitive field will include at least another dozen potential winners. None of them are more hungry than the four-car Pabst Racing squad, which has secured the fastest race lap in six of

o firm favorite has emerged from the early stages of this year’s rebranded Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. At stake is a scholarship prize to graduate from the middle step of the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires open-wheel development ladder to the top step, Indy Lights, in 2020. Talented Swedish youngster Rasmus Lindh moved to the top of the points table for defending champion team Juncos Racing after sweeping both road course races on the Indianapolis Grand Prix circuit in May, but his advantage was tenuous. Parker Thompson (Abel Motorsports) and Danial
Frost (Exclusive Autosport) had enjoyed similarly impressive showings during the opening three weekends of the 16-race season, while Lindh’s teammate, Sting Ray Robb, also remained firmly in contention after scooping a trio of podium finishes. Popular Road to Indy veteran Thompson, from Red Deer, Alb., was the first to shine in St. Petersburg, Fla. His team, Abel Motorsports, is new to the series this year but Thompson, 21, is a relative old hand after finishing second in the 2018 title-chase to Rinus VeeKay. Thompson also had finished second and third in two prior seasons of competition in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship.

The combination took the Florida streets by storm as Thompson parlayed a pair of pole positions into two race wins. Contrast that with his fortunes at Indianapolis, where the team struggled to find an optimal setup and Thompson qualified toward the back of the field. Thankfully, strong racecraft and a few slices of good fortune enabled him to salvage a pair of fifth-place finishes, but that was far from what both he and the team had expected. The next round, on the Lucas Oil Raceway oval, had been the scene of a dominant performance by Thompson in 2018, but this time there was disappointment when his third-fastest qualifying time was annulled due to a breach of the technical procedure regulations. Raceday wasn’t much better as a 10th-place result saw him slip to fourth in the points. Thompson will carry momentum into this weekend as a three-time winner in USF2000 on the streets of Toronto. After finishing second in his rookie North American season last year in USF2000, Lindh, 18, from Gothenburg, Sweden, has been by far the most consistently fast qualifier since graduating to Indy Pro 2000. He made an excellent start from the outside pole to snatch the lead from Thompson in the St. Petersburg opener, and while he was unable to keep the more experienced Canadian behind him – and could manage only fourth in Race Two – it was clearly only a matter of time before he would claim his first Road to Indy victory. Sure enough, that came in convincing style at Indianapolis, where he doubled up in Race Two to snag the points lead. Fellow rookie Frost, from Singapore, also has impressed after stepping up from merely a partial season of USF2000 in 2018. The 17-year-old marked his graduation by finishing fourth in Race One at St. Petersburg, then claimed a hat-trick of podium appearances which extended through the Indianapolis GP weekend. Next time out on the LOR oval he was a dominant force. Frost was fastest at the pre-race test by an astonishing half-second margin, and while that advantage diminished in the race, he was never seriously challenged en route to a well-deserved maiden win. Robb, from Payette, Idaho, also can be expected to challenge for race wins during this weekend’s Cooper Tires Grand Prix Presented by Allied Building Products. Like Lindh before him, a maiden victory would

where he couldn’t maintain his outside front row starting position and was pipped to the final podium place on the last lap by an opportunistic Lindh. Intriguingly, Kirkwood and Lindh were among the USF2000 pacesetters last year on the streets of Toronto, with Kirkwood securing two wins and Lindh posting the fastest race lap each day. Let’s see if they can maintain that form this time.

appear to be just around the corner for the third-year Indy Pro 2000 racer. Kyle Kirkwood will be another man to watch. The 20-year-old from Jupiter, Fla., completely dominated last year’s USF2000 title-chase, winning 12 of the 14 races and a Mazda Scholarship to move up one step on the ladder this year. But he has found the transition to Indy Pro 2000 rather more challenging. It certainly didn’t help that his arrangement with RP Motorsport USA was

signed only a few days before the start of the season, which meant he had virtually no testing with which to familiarize himself with the significantly faster Tatuus PM-18. Of course, he already had useful experience of more powerful cars after also blitzing last year’s F3 Americas championship, but his victory aspirations were countered by incidents in the first race at St. Petersburg and the second race at Indianapolis. He struggled a little, too, at Lucas Oil Raceway,

“Toronto is a pinnacle track on the calendar... You don’t really have much else on the schedule that you can go to that prepares you for Toronto, so it’s kind of just being thrown in the deep end.”
K
icking off the second half of the season here at Toronto means an all-out dash for the championship, which wraps up with two rounds at Road America on Aug. 2-4 and the finale at Mont Tremblant on Sept. 27-29. Leading up to Indy Toronto, though, GT3 Cup Challenge Canada started off its season just down the road at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville during the annual Victoria Day SpeedFest. Jeff Kingsley in the No. 16 Policaro Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car took his first career victory in the season opener by a narrow 1.104 seconds. Kingsley, from Ajax, Ontario, is eager to continue his winning ways at Indy Toronto this weekend. “Toronto is a pinnacle track on the calendar,” said Kingsley. “It’s obviously pretty demanding, but you also have to be calm at the same time. Adjusting to that is a bit different. You don’t really have much else on the schedule that you can go to that prepares you for Toronto, so it’s kind of just being thrown in the deep end. “With such little track time in the previous year, you just have to go for it and learn it all over again because even though you’ve been there before, it’s a bit
unfamiliar to you. I’m looking forward to being back, especially with the Policaro Motorsports/Liqui Moly guys, and can’t wait to be there for a local race.” In Round 2 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Roman De Angelis in the No. 79 Mark Motors Racing Porsche took the checkered flag. De Angelis enters the 2019 season eager for a championship after finishing runner up in the title hunt last year. De Angelis and Kingsley are two of four drivers pulling double duty in 2019 between GT3 Cup Challenge Canada and its USA counterpart – Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama. The other two are Parker Thompson in the No. 3 SCB Racing Porsche and Alan Metni in the No. 99 Kelly-Moss/AM Motorsport Porsche. Why is that an important statistic? Both GT3 Cup Challenge series competed simultaneously last month at the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. It was a stacked field with 39 Porsches battling around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The four drivers competing in both championships earned points towards both the GT3 Cup Challenge Canada and the GT3 Cup Challenge USA titles. Capitalizing on the opportunity was De Angelis. The 18-year-old won both rounds in Montreal, which was coincidentally the

site where he captured his first GT3 Cup Challenge Canada Platinum victory just one year prior. Meanwhile for Metni, Indy Toronto will be the first real street course he’s ever competed on. “I’m very much looking forward to it,” said Metni, who competes in the Platinum Masters class for drivers 45 and older. “I think it’s going to be a blast. I’ve never done a true street circuit before and I’ve only seen this one before on a simulator, so I’m looking forward to doing it in the real world.” And although he’ll be a rookie on the Indy Toronto circuit, he’s well aware of how quickly the walls can come up on a car here. “That actually heightens the excitement and the energy level,” added Metni. “Real consequences on a race like that make it that much more fun to do well, so I hope to do well.” For Rounds 5 and 6 of the season, GT3 Cup Challenge returned to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park last weekend for the second and final time of the year. For results, please visit IMSA.com. GT3 Cup Challenge Canada action gets underway in Toronto starting Friday, July 12. The two practice sessions will take place at 9:25 a.m. ET and 4:15 p.m. Timing and scoring will be available at scoring. imsa.com. Fans at Indy Toronto are invited to attend the Driver Autograph Session on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to meet and take photos with all of the series drivers. The autograph session will be held in the Enercare Centre. Qualifying for Race 1 will take place later that day at 12:15 p.m., with the 45-minute race going green at 4:15 p.m. Race 2 is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. For updates throughout the weekend and for the remainder of the season, please visit IMSA.com, Porsche.com/Canada or on social media using the hashtags #GT3Canada and #IMSA.

hat they actually witnessed was a racing series that has quickly garnered the attention of extreme sports enthusiasts worldwide, referred to as SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks. Stadium SUPER Trucks will once again be apart of the Honda Indy Toronto in 2019 after previously competing at the event in 2013, 2014 & 2016. Unlike the Indycars and other series of the Road to Indy, the Stadium SUPER Trucks will add four 36” tall aluminum ramps to the racecourse as obstacles for the drivers to navigate. Robby Gordon, a NASCAR and IndyCar veteran, created the series to bring the excitement of off-road truck racing to large crowds of race fans in metropolitan markets. “I like to say that IndyCar racing brings fans to the race track and Stadium SUPER Trucks racing brings fans to the fences,” Gordon said. “When people see these trucks fly it blows them away. We raced in front of more than a million people last year and millions more on television, and we are very excited about where the series is going. We are also thrilled to be back to Toronto in front of some great Canadian motorsports fans.” Now internationally acclaimed, the series has sparked an interest in several NASCAR and IndyCar notables – Greg Biffle, Rusty Wallace, Casey Mears, Boris Said, and Paul Tracy to just name a few. But there’s plenty of room for aspiring racers, too, which is something Gordon values. Gordon built the series’ foundation with a vision of an even playing field – competition based purely on driver skill. Unlike other racing leagues where vehicles are constructed by individual teams, SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks features identically prepared trucks for each driver. Not only does this raise the level of intensity on the course, but also makes the series more affordable for drivers. “Auto racing is a tough sport to break into,” Gordon said. “It’s not just about skill, it’s about funding. There are so many talented racers vying for a chance and a very small percentage of those actually see their hobby turn into a career. My goal with Stadium SUPER Trucks was to help more drivers fuel their passion for motorsports.” Twenty-One year old Sheldon Creed is a testament to Gordon’s business model and a driver to keep your eye on in 2019. The California native clearly knows his way around a racetrack claiming back-to-back SST World

Championships in 2015 & 2016, and claming the ARCA Racing Series Championship in 2018. Creed will compete full time with the Gander Outdoors Trucks Series in 2019 all while dropping back to SST for select races throughout the year. Another driver to watch in the SST Honda Indy Toronto will be 2018 SST World Champion Matt Brabham of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. After capturing the open-wheeled USF 2000 and Pro Mazda Championships in 2012 & 2013, Brabham competed in IndyLights, IndyCar, and Supercars but the young Australian has found a true home in Stadium SUPER Trucks mastering the difficult to drive trucks with
6 wins in 2018 and 13 podium finishes. Brabham and his Carlisle No. 83 will no doubt be a contender in the SST Honda Indy Toronto Classic. The SST Honda Indy Toronto marks the series’ first scheduled event of the 2019 SST World Championship season outside of the United States. The high-flying trucks will be in action on Friday with a 30-minute practice session, followed by feature races on both Saturday and Sunday. For more information on SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks, visit www.stadiumsupertrucks.com or follow on Facebook at Stadium SUPER Trucks, and on Twitter and Instagram @SSuperTrucks.

ROOKIE RACERS
Back by popular demand, the Honda Indy Toronto Rookie Racers will get up-close access drivers and cars, and have hands-on opportunity to learn how racing cars operate and receive a Rookie Racers Membership kit. Saturday, will be filled with on-site activities involving some of race car drivers and teams. Sunday during Pre-Race for the NTT IndyCar Series, your child will get the chance to high five EVERY driver on the starting grid! The Rookie Racers ‘Membership Kit’ is jam-packed with gifts from Cooper Tires, Tim Hortons, Honda, Grain Farmers of Ontario, and more!
FAMILY-FRIENDLY
Not only are kids 12 and Under FREE to enter #indyTO, FREE to ride the GO Train to the event, but they also have FREE access to the IndyCar Paddock all event weekend long. After checking out all the cars, and maybe getting a few autographs, head over to the Honda Junior Red Riders exhibit to get your child on a dirt bike in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Need a minute from the hustle and bustle of the Honda Indy Toronto? Check out the kids entertainment and family rest zone.
PADDOCKS
The Paddock is like the locker room by comparison to hockey, football, basketball or baseball. It is better known as the GARAGE area in the racing industry. Whenever the cars are not on the race track during an event weekend they will be found inside the Paddock. While the NTT IndyCar Series Paddock requires a Paddock Pass, the support series paddocks (including the new Stadium Super Trucks!) is completely free.
HONDA SPEED ZONE
A space meant for your kids! Interactive games from Toronto’s favourite sports teams, Honda’s misting tent, inflatables, complimentary Cotton Candy, Snow Cones and Popcorn presented by Honda and so much more to keep your children smiling and happy all weekend long. The Honda Speed Zone is a part of Thunder Alley, alongside other contests and exhibits, food trucks and vendors and merchandise.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO
FOOD
Looking for lunch? Of course, long time event fav Pizza Pizza will be all over the festival grounds for your enjoyment. Event-goers can also find a variety of options by visiting The Truck Stop - a village of food trucks from The Food Dudes and a selection of other local mainstays located by Thunder Alley. The Food Dudes are the new festival partner for all Honda Indy Toronto eats.
HONDA WORLD
It’s Honda’s 50th anniversary! Check out their museum to see how Honda has changed over the years or play the Honda Passport game - collect a game card, collect a stamp from the areas noted on the card, bring it back to Honda World and collect a prize! Want to get your blood pumping? Test your goalie skills at Honda Virtual Reality Hockey Shootout or take a lap around the Monza racetrack at the Acura NSX Virtual Reality Race. Looking for a cool place to watch #indyTO? Stop by Honda World to watch on the big screen!
CAA MEMBERS’ LOUNGE
CAA Members, don’t forget to check out the member’s only lounge inside the EnerCare Centre. Come inside from the heat and cool off in the relaxing space that will feature comfy lounge seating, free giveaways, an on-site contest to win 2020 tickets and more!
With every big win comes a big celebration! Make sure to head over to OLG Winner’s Circle after each race to watch as race car drivers, from as young as 17 to as old as 40, celebrate with style (and maybe some bubbly!). Nothing beats being there as the winner hops out of his car in excitement after such a crazy race.
BEER GARDENS
Walk through the gates at Turn 1 and you’ll be greeted with the Pinty’s Pub and Grill. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy a fantastic view as the green flag waves and the cars take their first turn in true competition. Want a different view? Across the track at Turn 4, just past Thunder Alley, you’ll find the Miller Lite Deck, a new raised beer garden platform to enjoy with big screens, table service and much more.

Gamma Titanium Aluminide. Jets use this stuff for a reason.
BorgWarner’s EFR™ Series super-cores and turbochargers are built using Gamma Titanium Aluminide. This lightweight, high-strength material is close to 50% lighter than its Inconel® counterpart and helps to deliver quick engine boost when needed. No matter if it’s on the road or in the sky, nothing comes close to the boosting sensation delivered by Gamma-Ti.
