SEASON 9 BEGINS. Eight years. Can you believe it?

early 100 competitors put themselves in the ring for the ultimate title over the course of 2020. Working with new challenges during a strange year, competitors faced new challenges this year, and had to get creative to fight their way up the ranks from the top 64 all the way to the final two spots. Typically, the finals would take place on the SEMA show floor, but this past year we had no SEMA to attend in person! Despite those challenges, the two finalists Kaylee Crayton and Karisa Andersen rose to the occasion, marking our first ever all-female final battle. Making things even more interesting was the fact that both of them were competing in a 2013 Scion FR-S, each one modified in their own unique way. A big congratulations goes out to both of these ladies for a hard fought battle. Of course, a Tuner Battlegrounds issue wouldn’t be complete without a closer look at many of the builds that climbed their way up to the top 64 spots, so we’ve dedicated some pages to you guys as well! Sprinkled among our usual PAS content is a variety of Tuner Battlegrounds content that we hope you will all enjoy.

In some ways, this is one of our favorite issues every year because it’s all about YOU! Among all the fun stuff we do, Tuner Battlegrounds brings us the closest to our audience, and we love to see the passion that goes into each and every build that climbs the ranks. ACHIEVING MORE PUNCH IN A SMALLER PACKAGE WITH SCIENCE. Whether you are looking for Earth-shattering bass, or something just to “fill the hole” in your sound, when you think of subwoofers, most think of trunkdominating enclosures that leave little left for anything bigger than a thermos.

etting that low end without sacrificing storage space is a tradeoff we’re all used to, and one most audio companies have imposed on the public for as long as car audio has existed. There is however, a solution: passive radiators. In 2016, Kicker reintroduced passive radiators - also known as “reflex subwoofers“ - into their enclosure designs in the form of the L7QB8. Their top-end Q Class subwoofer uses an all-aluminum enclosure design, equipped with a single eight-inch active subwoofer on one side and a passive radiator on the other. In total,

the entire enclosure measures a little under 10-inches squared. How can you get serious bass out of a subwoofer that small? In a word: science. The passive radiator does its job by providing a customized amount of pressure in the enclosure, much like a tuned port delivers – but using the radiator means the enclosure only needs a fraction of the space to do the same job as a tuned port. To borrow some marketing parlance: all the boom, with far less room. Aaron Surrat has been with Kicker for over two decades, and helped to reintroduce the radiator with the QB8. He helps create crossovers, designs enclosures, and works with acoustic engineers to fine tune the performance of the speakers themselves. He is also one of the very few people with the authority to approve the sound quality of a product before it goes to market. The design process is intensive at Kicker. Over 40 engineers work on the company’s products, using six electronic and acoustic labs in Kicker’s Stillwater, Oklahoma headquarters. On average, they take two years to develop a subwoofer, usually from the ground up. To customize the radiator, a series of changes are made. Weight is added to the cone, the size of the roll and its durometer (how stiff the surround

is) also changes to reach the goal. Once the changes are made, the new enclosure design is brought into the lab for a listening test. Each enclosure is tuned as low as possible without an audible loss in output. The goal is to avoid losing efficiency, which can happen if you tune the enclosure too low. Said Mr. Surratt of the L7QB8 “It worked out well and turned us onto making more enclosures with radiators.” The next radiator-equipped enclosure was the CompRT, made to fit behind or under a truck seat. “We wanted to make them small, but still get deep bass out of it. The radiator was the perfect solution.” He explained that small, sealed boxes acoustically limit the amount of deeper, bottom-end bass available. By starving the subwoofer of air, the sound is a tight, “punchy” bass typically associated with smaller enclosures. “It just didn’t extend quite as low as we wanted it to,” he said of previous experiments. “You need a long enclosure to fit enough port length for low tuning. It also takes some work to avoid port noise. Sometimes it requires a port so long it would technically have to extend out of the enclosure itself. With the radiator, we can keep the enclosure small enough to fit behind the seat. With the TRTP, we wanted to make something that worked well with really low bass. This was the first time we did a long-throw radiator, and it worked out well. The radiator throws farther than the active sub, so we customized it to ensure it tunes the enclosure to the target frequency range. It’s the best of both worlds.”

“When it comes to making your decision, the advice is simple: listen to the experts.” ($1.49/ft.). For aluminum? Raise the gauge up to 1/0 gauge of CCA ($0.89/ ft.). See the scale for their head-tohead comparison. The car stereo faithful often disagree with the frugal approach, as CCA is well documented to carry less current versus the same size OFC wire, while getting hotter in the process; not to mention that aluminum is nearly impossible to solder. This means that once you commit to cutting it off the spool, you’ll be hard-pressed to alter the length of the wire run without breaking out a welder. As for the 99.9% pure copper option, OFC typically comes in two “flavors” – tinned and un-tinned. The tinned version means that each in-

dividual strand of copper is protected with a thin coating of tin. This helps on two fronts: firstly, it inherently makes the cable more resistant to corrosion, which will invariably come into play in your engine bay. An added bonus is that the cable tends to last longer and deliver a more reliable amount of power over time, as the corrosion on an un-tinned wire inhibits the flow of electricity. As the wire is pre-coated, it also makes joining two cables that much easier if needed. The sacrifice made by tinning any cable is conductivity, as the tinning process does create a slight amount of power loss. Pre-tinned OFC is often the most expensive wire option as well, but as the saying goes: you get what

you pay for. The inherent protection, cooler operating temperature, and smaller diameter makes it an excellent choice for a stealthy, safe install. When it comes to making your decision, the advice is simple: listen to the experts. Ask questions - even ones you think may put you in the “noob” category. Simply put, if you care more about saving space, far higher efficiency, and lower heat levels, copper is the way to go. If you want a more economical option and don’t mind a comparatively larger gauge wire (or multiple smaller ones), CCA is what you’ll probably go for. Both will get the job done if run in the right way, and for the right power requirements. By far the biggest mistake you can make is the easiest one: willful ignorance. Heed expert advice and your system will get all the power it could ever want.

CA stands for Copper Clad Aluminum, an alternative to the more vaunted OFC (Oxygen Free Copper) cable. On the whole, CCA is a source of continuing controversy, especially among the old-school 12V crowd and car audio purists, given OFC is a far better conductor of power. So why would anyone use CCA? The most common reason is the simplest one: price. “CCA is a good value when used properly,” says Bill Greenberg, owner of 12-volt wire manufacturer KnuKonceptz. By “properly,” he refers to accurate power ratings, which the company prints on every product page. By adhering to the specs, the wire serves as an economical way to get the right amount of power to the system. If the user buys CCA with the expectation of equating it to OFC – that’s where the problems can arise. Excessive heat, high resistance, voltage loss, and potential failure of the wire itself are all pitfalls to be aware of and avoided – aluminum or not. “Right now, raw copper costs roughly four times that of aluminum, which works out because copper is about twice as conductive as aluminum.” Mr. Greenberg explains. “CCA is typically less than half the cost of OFC, so you could get twice the amount of CCA wire and still spend less than the needed amount of OFC.” The appeal to the budget-conscious consumer is more than understandable. Here’s an example: let’s say you require 100 amps of current draw (add all the amplifier fusing up in your sound system to get this value). many car enthusiasts before her, Karisa Andersen fell deep into the hobby long before she could even own a car. It goes so far back that she can’t actually pinpoint the exact thing that got her interested in cars, but she recalls playing with a lot of Hot Wheels cars with her brother and cousin back when she was much younger. Clearly some of it was passed down through the family, as she also recalls being taught to drive a stick-shift when she was just 11 years old. That lifelong passion propelled her into the heart of the car scene by the time she was old enough, and continued strong to earn her the 2nd place spot in Tuner Battlegrounds’ 2020 championship.

Before she could drive, Andersen knew she wanted to look out the front window and see a sports car that she had built herself. When she was just 15, her first vehicle became a 2000 Toyota Celica. She didn’t know where to start immediately, but it wasn’t long before she had picked up little mods and customization pieces for the interior. Eventually she worked her way up to performance modifications in the form of a cold air intake. Unfortunately, it was no more than two years later when that Celica was totaled in a tragic accident, but it was too late for her to back out now - she was hooked.

A few Toyotas later, including a tC in the interim, she stumbled upon the concept for the Scion FR-S online. Immediately she knew that was the one for her. A short time later, her friend who worked at a Toyota Dealership was looking out for Andersen, and let her know that a manual Series 10 edition of the FR-S had landed at their location. A few months later, that Series 10 was delivered to Andersen in person. Believe it or not, at this time she still didn’t really know what to start with in terms of modifications, but the car was so fun in its stock form that she got to enjoy it for a few years. Upon moving to Minnesota and marrying her husband, things started to get more exciting with the car. “He is a huge car enthusiast, and he is super handy when it comes to doing work on the cars. He is what fuels my passion and he points me in the right direction,” Andersen tells us. “That is when the build really started.” With the exception of some powder coating and retrofitting of lights, the pair of them have done the majority of the work on the car themselves, and she says she’s enjoyed every moment of the experience.

Originally, Andersen thought she was going to build a car for track usage, but as she started acquiring parts and taking inspiration from other cars, she started to shift her focus to something more show-oriented, as long as it could still hold its own on the track. Things like the Jackson Racing supercharger kit and APR carbon fiber cooling plate come into play here. When it came to choosing which parts would accentuate the build and make it show-worthy, Andersen placed a strong emphasis on part quality - not only for the tried and tested durability of the parts themselves, but also because proper fitment makes a world of difference when it comes to installation. Along the way, both Andersen and her husband worked tirelessly to transform the FR-S. Some of the biggest and most noticeable changes include the Rallybacker V2 widebody kit, Seibon Carbon hood, Battle Aero spoiler and splitter, retrofitted headlights and tail lights, and of course Andersen’s favorite modification: the colorshift vinyl wrap.

At ground level, the show-worthy presentation continues. 18-inch Work T7R 2-piece wheels, measuring 10 inches wide and 11.5 inches wide in the front and rear respectively, are wrapped in Federal 595 tires. That wheel and tire setup sits tucked behind her Rallybacker V2 fenders thanks to Air Lift Performance’s 3P air suspension system - another testament to the quality of chosen parts. It’s clear upon first glance that this FR-S is ready for the show circuit. Interior modification is where it all started for her, so it’s no surprise that Andersen’s FR-S interior is custom tailored to her standards. Blue lighting is everywhere, including the illuminated

Air Lift controller mount, and specific trim pieces were wrapped to match the exterior theme. One of the coolest pieces, which is sure to go the distance at shows, is the custom starlight suede headliner. Adding that special touch of JDM flare is a Vertex steering wheel, which fits the interior perfectly. Andersen may have made it far in Tuner Battlegrounds, as well as local shows with the car, but she still isn’t finished just yet. “I enjoy every moment working on my car,” she says excitedly, “I have learned so much over the last couple years and cannot wait to keep building it.” Whatever comes next, we’ll certainly be watching! something about looking to the stars that reminds us of our tiny place in the universe. Amid the endless expanse of stars and dark matter is our little planet, and there’s something oddly comforting about our universal insignificance amid lightyears of stardust. For Kaylee Crayton, that theme is ever-present in her adventures through the world of car shows and motorsports, and it shows itself clearly in her 2013 Scion FR-S. The 2020 Tuner Battlegrounds Championship title was awarded to Crayton after a hard-fought year of modifying, racing, and competing in our own championship along the way. With one foot in the show scene, and the other firmly planted on the racetrack, Crayton has been involved in cars one way or another for the better part of her adult life. Thanks to her father, she had her hand in the mechanical workings of motorcycles and jet skis long before she could drive, so cars were just the next logical step in her progression. Her journey into the world of cars started early, when she purchased her 2013 FR-S at just 17 years old. While the car was still in its stock form, she brought it to an Import Drag Racing Circuit event. Not long after that, she was on track herself. All it took was one trip down the drag strip, and she was hooked for life. “Drag racing is my passion,” she says, “so the first time I went down the track, I needed to go faster!” That need for speed would

slowly snowball into an impressive engine build and racing tenure. Inspired by Ali Afsher, owner of the world’s fastest BRZ, Crayton aimed to dispel the common claim that the FR-S platform was too slow for drag racing. After a few events, the need for speed took over, and the Scion’s engine was due for some upgrades. King’s bearings, Brian Crower valve springs, CP Carillo 10:1 pistons, and Manley H-Tuff connecting rods would bolster the FA20’s internals, while a Kraftwerks C38 supercharger with a pulley upgrade and a Grams Performance upgraded throttle body

would drastically improve air flow. Fine-tuned with an EcuTek RaceROM, the setup makes a respectable 280 horsepower at the rear wheels. That extra power is put to the ground by way of Nitto Neo Gen tires, measuring 225/40/18, and those are now recently wrapped around 18-inch Gram Lights WGI 57DR wheels - the spoils of victory from Tuner Battlegrounds 2020! Located just behind the front wheels is an RR Racing Sport Performance front big brake kit, adding extra stopping power to the whole ensemble. Performance enhancements taken care of, Crayton didn’t want her car to be just another weekend warrior, either. With a deep rooted love for the shows that got her into the scene, she wanted her FR-S to handle itself on the show floor as well. The Metro Wrap Galaxy vinyl wrap is the most noticeable modification from all angles - even with that big Battle Aero chassis-mounted swan neck wing - and was a key part of the reason the car was given the nickname “Nebula” by Crayton. Continuing that theme on the inside is Crayton’s handiwork in the form of a twinkling fiber optics starry night sky headliner, which makes for an absolutely breathtaking

THE METRO WRAP GALAXY VINYL WRAP IS THE MOST NOTICEABLE MODIFICATION FROM ALL ANGLES - EVEN WITH THAT BIG BATTLE AERO CHASSIS-MOUNTED SWAN NECK WING - AND WAS A KEY PART OF THE REASON THE CAR WAS GIVEN THE NICKNAME “NEBULA” BY CRAYTON.

show piece. Carefully applied support lighting in the form XK Glow underglow and interior lighting goes the distance in setting this FR-S apart as a true dual-purpose vehicle. Thanks to Air Lift Performance’s 3P Performance Series air suspension, Crayton gets to enjoy the best of both worlds in the suspension department as well. Over the years, Crayton amassed several awards on both the track and the show floor from numerous events. In 2019, she attended SEMA to meet the cast of All Girls Garage. The group and Crayton hit it off at the show, and she ended up getting the opportunity to do her supercharger install on All Girls Garage season 9! Despite a tragic spinning of a rod bearing just before they wrapped up filming on the track, Crayton was able to get everything back together in time thanks to MNR Racing.

Her time with the All Girls Garage crew left her feeling inspired. “It's a big challenge being ‘lady driven’ in a male dominant sport,” she tells us. “I've learned to continue to push through and win races and not let that stop me. I let my driving do my talking.” Since then, more car show awards and drag race wins have decorated Crayton’s record. The Tuner Battlegrounds Championship is just another in a long list of accolades for her! Since winning the Tuner Battlegrounds 2020 Championship, Crayton has added some new modifications to go with those new wheels. Status Racing seats custom tailored to her theme were one of the highlights, and a Nitrous Express kit is probably the most exciting. “My favorite modification

is my Nitrous Express kit,” she says excitedly. “I like having 100 horsepower at a push of a button.” From afar, Crayton certainly seems to be balancing performance and style in equal measures! With plans to possibly change from a supercharger to a turbo, we know for sure that Crayton’s racing tenure is only just beginning.
