FROM THE TRACK TO THE STREET, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship roared into town this past July for the July 7-9 weekend. Prototype racecars, LMP3, GTD PRO and GTD classes were just some of the incredible racecars on full display at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario - the only Canadian location where you could watch the IMSA WeatherTech Championship. Among some of the world's wildest racecar competition were the IMSA
We found time between trips from the spectator bleachers to the beer garden to wander into the open paddocks and pits, and chat with some friends of ours - the team at JDC Miller Motorsports, and some of the partners we know and love: LiquiMoly and Unitronic, both of which play an integral part in the JDC Miller Motorsports race program. We also got a chance to chat
with one of the drivers of their Gen2 Audi RS3 TCR racecar, and owner of a similar Audi street car, to see where the crossover between street and track takes place with their partners.
The LiquiMoly partnership was chosen for a variety of reasons. Not only is it regarded by the team as the best oil in the business, but it also holds all of the OEM approvals for their genre of applications, being so Euro-focused. They use LiquiMoly in their street cars, as well as their racecars, which stands as a testament to the quality of the LiquiMoly products at play in the harshest conditions that their racecars can put them.
The partnership is also mutually beneficial. With all of the development JDC Miller Motorsports and Unitronic do on both the street and the track, there's a plethora of practical and useful data to use for LiquiMoly, and in turn, that helps their partners make sound decisions when it comes to oil. LiquiMoly also helps inform Unitronic customers on recommendations for oil standards and which products to choose, as well as why! Knowledge is everything, after all.

You hear that bump. It’s the ubiquitous association with someone’s massive subwoofer system. That pulsing power that fills you with curiosity and, quite possibly, a bit of envy. Big sound usually means a lot of subwoofers, lots of amplification, and an enclosure that takes nearly every square millimeter of available trunk space - but does the box always have to be so bloody big?
Passive radiators (AKA Reflex Subwoofers) have been around since the 1930s. The use of radiators allows an enclosure to be far smaller than its ported cousins, because of the similarities in resistance to the active subwoofer accompanying it. The goal of the box size and port together create resistance. At the end of the day, that resistance is the tuning frequency of the box, which helps to determine the performance of the speaker and how much power it can take.
Think like a scale, with the box on one side and the active sub on the other. The sub wants air but the box resists, creating pressure. This battle for atmosphere happens hundreds of times per second. Want less resistance? Change the box. The sub plays deeper but it may not play louder. Want a little more punch to the bass? Tighten the box up. It won't play as deeply, but the higher frequencies and the impact will make that kick drum really kick.
“But what can I do if I don’t have tons of room in my trunk for a big enclosure?” you ask. Here’s where the reflex sub comes into play. Tuning a ported enclosure usually comes down to the port length and enclosure size. As those two sliding scales move, so does the response of the sub. Now
“resistance is the tuning frequency of the box, which helps to determine the performance of the speaker and how much power it can take”
as changing the port and enclosure size. The resulting resistance changes the tuning frequency, without needing additional airspace like you would with a ported enclosure. Ultimately, you get a far thinner enclosure that performs like a much larger one, without sacrificing power handling or frequency response.
One misconception is that passive radiators are strictly for subs. In fact, KICKER has been using radiators since 1980, when company Founder, Steve Irby, made his very first production fullrange enclosure. A pair of 6.5-inch drivers and piezo tweeters accompanied a single 10-inch radiator in the center. The enclosure was meant to be a full-range solution installed in the back of a single-cab truck. In recent years, radiators have made a resurgence in the KICKER lineup.
“We revisited passive radiators about a decade ago,” says Aaron Surratt, KICKER’s New Product Develop-
“KICKER has been using radiators since 1980, when company Founder, Steve Irby, made his very first production full-range enclosure.”
ment Manager. “We wanted to make a subwoofer that saved space, but took gobs of power and played low. The radiator helped us do that. The design trickled down to the CompRT
loaded enclosure, and then to other projects.” Currently, KICKER makes a trio of subwoofer lines, built to take up minimal space under a truck seat or in a cargo area. All three are less than seven inches deep.
Surratt pointed out that without the radiator, the only way to get the enclosure to play low is to include an extremely long port, which increases the size of the overall enclosure. The radiator solves that problem. Even in high SPL applications, where extreme volume and extraordinarily deep bass are commonplace, a radiator can still take the place of a port, and lower the required size of the enclosure without sacrificing performance.
The tradeoff is cost. As of the publishing of this article, research showed the price of passive radiators ranging widely from $13 up to $235,
depending on the brand, materials, and feature sets (mainly if the radiator is adjustable or not). Deeper bass often requires additional resistance, so the adjustability of the radiator allows the DIY enthusiast to play with varying weights to find the best balance of bass and efficiency.
Ultimately, deciding on a tuning solution is a matter of convenience and price. The majority of sub enclosures that feature a passive radiator are intentionally thin, made for the crowd who don’t want a big box, don’t want to build their own, and just want it to work. However, if you are more of a mind to tinker and make things sound perfect for your particular taste, grab some wood, a few subs (both active and passive), then ponder the possibilities. The results can be truly impressive.
In the concrete jungles of the San Francisco Bay Area, where every turn of a corner reveals an automotive tale, Jimmy Tu's Nissan GT-R emerges as a builder’s magnum opus. Jimmy, now making his way as a full-time real estate investor, is no stranger to the symphony of Japanese steel and engineering. In fact, he’s been at this game of speed and style since 1998. Nearly two decades deep in the game, he decided it was time to make his mark - permanently.
As a disciple of Japan’s iconic Option 2 videos, and an avid reader of every tuner magazine he could get his hands on - PASMAG included - Tu's automotive journey is a tapestry woven with the threads of creativity and individuality. He’s been around long enough to watch the dominant styles shift in the sands of time. From crazy paint jobs and wild body kits or conversions, to the timeless and subtle influence of the late ‘90s and early 2000s JDM scene, Tu has seen it all. His builds reflect his eclectic tastes over the years, and are a fusion of audacious custom work and subtle, rare Japanese-inspired details. It’s a rolling testament to his appreciation for all styling eras of the culture.
It’s a rolling testament to his appreciation for all styling eras of the culture.
The GT-R, the undisputed monarch of the Japanese automotive world, was the natural canvas for Jimmy's latest vision. The twin-turbo AWD V6 platform has always stood out to him as a dream car. Once a seemingly unattainable vehicle, Tu began his latest build saga with the acquisition of a 2015 R35 GT-R in late 2020, as a blank canvas awaiting transformation. LTMW got the honor of first cuts to the GT-R, with the installation of the Rocket Bunny V1 widebody kit and an Air Lift Performance 3P air suspension system being among the first modifications Tu opted for.
Unsatisfied with just aesthetic modifications to get the ball rolling, the car was then treated to SPE Engineering’s flex fuel page, Injector Dynamics injectors, Hellcat fuel pumps, HKS intakes, and downpipes before getting a quick tune for a little bump in power. Queue the snowball effect; more on that in a moment.
Before he tipped the scales of modification to the radical end of the spectrum, the car was vinyl wrapped, and during that downtime Tu had Shawn from HBP Built fabricate a custom titanium exhaust system. The bespoke exhaust featured a full 4-inch center exit, and some of the coolest exhaust tips ever made - the Boost Logic F16 fighter-jet style titanium tips.
The pivotal moment would occur when Jimmy crossed paths with Jesse at Worx Kustomz in Newark, CA. Together, they brainstormed and birthed a vision of a GT-R that defied convention. A one-of-one design emerged, from a custom front bumper to GT3-inspired side skirts, a symphony of exclusivity. Daniel from Con10der
crafted front splitters, canards, and a rear diffuser, adding the final strokes of bespoke artistry that would stay in place until the final iteration.
Jesse and his team also spent some time on the interior, reupholstering every surface in genuine Bride fabric. Kevlar Bride Stradia II reclinable bucket seats cradle the R35’s occupants, secured by Takata 4-point harnesses, and a custom 4-point roll cage from Studio RSR rounds out the interior transformation. Even the trunk exudes the same bespoke ethos, with Jesse's handcrafted subwoofer enclosure adorned with Bride fabric. The windows bear an eye-catching detail - a mark of Tu's vision - hand-etched with a design inspired by Horiyoshi III, making it a true one-off.

The ball was already rolling faster than Tu had expected, so he continued to leverage the experts in their respective fields to execute his vision. Finish Logic wielded their mastery to powdercoat the HKS intercooler piping, charge pipes, intakes, Ultra Racing strut bar, and Agency Power harness bar in a Flaming Candy Gold finish. Ed at Mobile Solutions brought a touch of futuristic technology with
a custom T-Rex Tesla-type screen, merging the cutting edge of tech with JDM tuner sensibilities.
The wheels are three-piece Work Meister S1s, a wheel that Tu had always regarded as the pinnacle of Japanese wheels, uniquely tailored for the R35 platform by way of some suspension wizardry from Dan Chandra from ModsGarage21. The Meisters, with their outer lips etched in the
same design as the windows, found their crowning glory with Baid Polish's Prismatic Universe finish and 24k gold hardware, before being wrapped with Toyo Proxes Sport tires. Stopping power is handled by Project Mu by way of SCR Pro rotors and Type PS pads.
Remember when we mentioned the snowball effect taking hold? Well it didn’t take long before the exciting nature of what Tu’s GT-R had become called for more jam. Ben Linney of Linney Tuning was in charge of finetuning the beast once HKS GT800 turbos, a GReddy Type 06 intercooler, supporting mods for the upgraded turbos, and a Shep Stage 2.5 transmission were in place. The end result was a potent 719 horsepower to all four wheels, with a transmission that could take the added abuse.
As a final crescendo to complete the R35’s total transformation from top to bottom, LOK's LCW Wraps cloaked the GT-R in a Madeira Red hue with a stunning vinyl wrap, a hue both bold and befitting of this oneof-one creation. In every contour, in every etch, Jimmy Tu's GT-R emerges as a singular opus, a testimony to the boundless possibilities that pulse within the heart of automotive artistry. This is not just a car; it is a statement, a symphony, and a legend in the making.

Mike Martino is a name that some of our audience will be familiar with, having appeared in past video and print segments of PASMAG. An avid drifter by day, and incredible designer by night, Martino combines his passion for style at his shop, Design Shop REACT. In addition to assorted work for a variety of clients, a big portion of Martino’s work is centered around automotive styling, namely in the realm of designing, printing, and installing some of the best liveries the world has ever seenincluding those for his shop’s drift team, Car Shop REACT, among many other high-profile individuals in drifting and motorsport.
We wanted to get the low-down on the subtle intricacies in the art of livery design, so we sat down with one of the best in the business, and got him to explain what he does these days, and the processes behind a good livery. Martino, take it away, and tell us how you got here, what Design Shop REACT is, and then walk us through the process of creating meaningful liveries for a car.
Design Shop REACT is just an expansion on a dream I had of taking my abilities and turning them into a profitable company moving in the direction I want. My life's become so drift-oriented or caroriented because I wanted the business to become
an extension of that. I could design for anybody and anything, for instance a construction company or a company that has zero relation to what I like, but I prefer my niche where my heart is truly in it, and I can confidently push my work forward.
In short, I would say Design Shop REACT is a print and design studio, but really and truly my bread and butter has always been design, and that's where it started so I'm a design studio first. I'm here from morning to morning sometimes, just constantly doing something - even if I'm not doing something workrelated, just being here at the shop is the atmosphere I have to constantly put myself in so that I don't ever feel lazy or unmotivated. Being at the shop allows me to try more things, shape more ideas, talk to certain people, or just hone my craft.
When it comes to car liveries and design, we try to curate the “cool” factor when it comes to automotive design. Cool is entirely subjective, but I try to hit the mark where I think a design is cool, the customer thinks it's cool, and then if people who see it in the wild think it’s cool, that’s just a bonus. That's what I've been trying to do with a lot of the guys that I'm working with and how I've positioned myself. There's guys like Jimmy Oakes, for instance. He's been a huge part of this year's expansion, and we've built a friendship because of our business together.
Before we get into a customer’s ideas, there's some back and forth with them to try and figure out what they like. You want to take the car into consideration. If I’m being honest, I turn down some requests for design if I see the owner doesn’t really take care of the car, or has a bad reputation. My work is what people come to me for, so if it’s misrepresented that could have a negative impact on future projects.
I also have to mention that most people want to copy someone, or at least take very heavy inspiration, and most others have zero idea what they want to do. Every once in a while you get the guy who actually knows what they want for the most part. I try to give each customer ingredients to cook their meal. I’ll show them racecars from certain eras that might fit their style - maybe an old like ‘80s JTCC racecar. I also try to learn about them first. I’ll look at their instagram to see their car tastes, their personality, and more, so I will do a little bit of research on that and come up with my concepts based on their preference in styling.
A lot of the time now - especially with some high profile drivers and teams - they will have actual brands they're sponsored by that have corporate looking logos, whereas a lot of the Japanese brands - which is where most of my style comes from - look good basically anywhere in a livery. I tried to make my own logo a mixture of the two: complicated and old, but a little modern while still simple, so it would look good on anything with some slight alteration at most. I have variations of my logo, but they’re all cohesive.
Sponsorship logos are where the concept can change before it begins, because if the logos don't look goodor if they have a big sponsor list - that can determine whether it's going to be very brand heavy or if it's going to be more graphical. I may steer clients in a direction that they might not know they wanted. Sometimes I have to help them figure out the concept as a whole. Sometimes it’s about finding where their tastes in cars and their personality or brand image overlap. If someone
likes more Americanized things that will be a huge factor in what the design looks like because you're going to have someone who thought they wanted Japanese style because it’s such an iconic style, but after seeing it they don’t like it, so sometimes I have to go through a quick rough rendition to get their feedback. Then we’re on the same page.
Ultimately, if there is a base story or a base theory to a livery, I can come up with something with shapes and colors and positions, but if there isn't something to base it on, I have to come up with something based on the factors I’ve learned about them before.
That's how my process is. I can’t always force myself to design. I have to be in the right mood, otherwise you're going to get a subpar product from me and I don’t like that. I want it to be my quality, or what I think you're going to be happy with.
Sometimes it’s something I like that the customer may not like initially, but it gives us a starting point. Typically if you're coming to me for my style of design, there’s a good chance I can help guide our ideas into one.
The first step is to open up Illustrator and then close it, because I realize that I'm not in the right mindset to design. That sounds like a joke, but that's typically what happens almost every time, and then I'll go downstairs and print some stuff, or walk around the shop, clean up something, maybe put on some music or watch some videos.
Once my brain is working creatively and it’s time to make some designs, the first step is Adobe Illustrator and about 100 Google Chrome tabs of ideas, shapes, and colors. The initial design steps are all about colors. I have my pantone book right behind my desk - I'm always looking at colors. I like to work with two main colors first: your base and your accent color. All the other stuff falls together as I go, like adding a third color that works in tandem with the first two, maybe for logo reasons or visual appeal.
Once I get to Illustrator, I'll start with a render of the car. Sometimes I’ve already got one made, like an S13 or S15, for example. From there I'll take my base color, starting with whatever color their car is. A lot of choices are based on the base color. Front Street Tom’s car, for example, is
Millennium Jade - so it’s got a lot of green to it. The second you add a red it becomes a Christmas car, and the same applies if you have a red car and you add green - so I try to avoid that right away. I try to avoid holiday color schemes from impeding what I’m working with, as many people will automatically think of the holiday when they see it.
The next step is figuring out my shapes. Does the customer want something flame looking? Do they want something traditional tribal looking? A lot of people like the rip/tear style, or splashes, which I’m personally not a big fan of because it almost always looks like the included brush pack from Adobe. The shapes dictate a lot of the aura something gives off. I like abstract shapes. I find a shape that I can contour or make work with the body lines or the body kit. I always try to either make a shape or scribble something that I think works best, and then try a bunch of iterations of that shape. If it isn’t working, I’ll move on. Sometimes I find my shapes in the most random images. There was one I found in a picture of
a desert road. It had a cactus, but it was destroyed - it looked like it was hit by a car or something - and it was in such an orientation that I traced it out and it became a good shape, so I used it on a livery. I’ve even taken the shape of a letter like a “Q,” and cut it up or altered it to make it look good on a door line or a quarter panel. There’s a purpose for everything.
Most of the time, the next step is to leave it for the night because when I come back in the morning I hate it. Other times, though, I know I already like it when I’ve saved it, closed it, and then looked at it on my phone on the way home. If it looks good on my phone, I'll look at it on my tablet, then on the computer screen to visualize it in real life. What I try to do is find a photo of that person’s car and I'll quickly impose the design on their car. From there it’s a quick checklist before I send it to the customer. Do I like it? Are they going to like it? Do I see
problems with it? Is this my style? Am I doing too much or too little? Is this within the scope of what they came to me with? Is it missing anything? Do I need to explain anything?
I design specifically with print in mind. Because print is also one of our specialties, I always consider things like line strokes, the amount of bleed, rounded edges, sharp edges, colors merging where a cut will be, and a slew of other things. There's a lot of prep work to it, and that's why it can cost so much money. If you sent my files unprepared to another printer they would have to spend hours getting it ready for print.
It's not automatically ready for print when you're designing it - you have to add bleed, you have to properly lay it on an artboard, and you have to set it up so that it fits within your print roll. There are equipment constraints.
Most of the time, you can't just print the side of the car and be done. This part can be a day's worth of work on its own, but if I'm sending my design to someone who's getting it printed locally to them, I try to set it up for that printer, so the printer enjoys what they're doing - I know what it’s like to get bad files, and I don’t want to do that to someone else. There's so much to do in quality print setup that people don't realize - I could talk about that part for hours.
Once it’s down to actually printing the material, you need to have a good printer. I'll go to drift events and see some work I can’t believe someone paid lots of money for. I’ll always have a high standard of print quality. That’s a massive factor in making a livery look good - probably one of the biggest. If the printer can’t showcase the details of a complex design, what’s the point?
In the same vein, you also need to have quality print materials. There’s a big difference between an air-egress vinyl or a calendared vinyl. Air-egress
vinyl allows air to escape through microscopic passageways, whereas calendared vinyl - the stuff that you use for things like outdoor signage - does not have that, and it's not good at conforming to complex shapes. The airegress allows me to lay the vinyl on and squeegee out bubbles, or lift the vinyl to reposition it easily. I often use what I call my “house brand,” which is Arlon vinyls, but I've used and still use 3M, Avery and every brand there is that's top notch, or at the top of the industry. I just have so much good feedback on Arlon stuff. This isn’t an ad for Arlon, either - I just really do find it better and much more affordable here.
You also need a good laminate material. I laminate with a minimum five-year gloss or matte laminate. You have to laminate your materials for it to last. Most inks are good for five years, but do you park in the sun every day? You've seen what the sun does to paint. You need the correct laminate to go with the correct print material. For instance, they shrink at different
rates, so you want the shrink rate of your base vinyl material to match that of your laminate.
The timeline of a print all depends on the design, but for the most part it’s all the same. It gets printed, you take it off the printer, go over to the laminator for either gloss or matte lamination, then to the plotter so it can cut everything out right, and then go onto the table in the production room to weed it all out. Then you premask it, cut it up, and organize it.
If I’m sending a design out, I have a pretty extensive documented instruction booklet if I'm not installing it. It’s labeled well, and very detailed - things like explaining which pieces go first, second, and so-on for a seamless install. I have to eliminate room for error so at the end of it all I can roll it up, put it in a box, and send it out with confidence. That's a part of the craft most people aren’t aware of until they do it.
If I'm installing it, and don’t need to reference an instruction booklet, I can get started right away. Where I want to install it is in a clean shop. That's why my shop is as clean as I can keep it. I hate installing in a dirty or dusty shop. I do mobile installs sometimes, so I'm sitting on the floor a lot, and it can compromise the materials. Not only should it be clean, but you want to have good lighting.
Step one is to wash and dry the car. Then have your shop space clean, and have the tools that you're comfortable with. Each installer has their own tool sets they like to use. I have a bunch of different tools that help with the install, and a really good knife
that’s comfortable in my hand. That’s actually a big part of it. If I'm upside down or underneath the car I like a knife that has a little bit of weight to it but isn't too heavy. It sounds weird, but those things make a big difference on a good install. You also want a good sharp blade that doesn’t dull every two seconds. Spending the money on your tools is just like that of a mechanic - it’s worth it. I also have good squeegees, and good buffers on the squeegees so they don't scratch the vinyl.
For laying out vinyl and ensuring it all lines up, I have magnets that I use when the car isn’t all fiberglass. Other than that, you can use good quality painters tape. 90% of the time you're
improvising on install when it comes to some little things because cars have so many different shapes, and unless you have a perfect 3D-scan and have a full render with exact measurements, you're never going to get it exact, so as a designer and and an installer I look to see what looks best. If it doesn't line up how it's supposed to, I make it look how it should on the car in that situation, and as you do more of them you develop a better eye for it.
There are also some techniques to ensure long-term durability - the most important of which is something we call post-heat. You do it with a full vehicle wrap, and you should do it with any vinyl. You post heat it because vinyl has memory designed into it. Using a heat gun and an infrared thermometer, we heat up the vinyl to a certain temperature which kills the stretch memory in it, causing it to stay exactly where it is. It essentially resets the memory of the material to the shape it’s in now.
You also want to ensure your edges are down flat. If one edge is up and it rains, the water gets in there and it will spread. To avoid this, you need to clean around all the edges, and make sure everything is cut the way it needs to be cut. The usage of the vehicle determines some of this as well. For example, if it’s a show car, or a car with ample wheel clearance, I’ll wrap right around the edges with a big cut margin to go all the way around the panel, whereas on my drift car, I’ll cut it short at the wheel arches because I’m likely to rub tire or fling burnt rubber into those edges, which would compromise the material.
At the end of the job I always try to appreciate the overall result and really try to make sure the client is more than happy with how things went, or what they turned out to be. My number one goal is to make sure the client’s vision is executed right and there isn't anything left on the table. It's their car and their hard work, so it should be appreciated in all aspects from anyone involved.

Luckily, the boys at Dress Up Bolts had plenty of experience with this, and knew that older Evo valve cover hardware was a perfect fit. ORACLE
Unboxing
UNBOXED
ORACLE Lighting is one of the biggest names in the lighting game, and they've been a friend of PASMAG for many years. When PASMAG Editor, Adam Gordon, reached out looking for an underglow solution that would tie in engine bay lighting for his 1990 Nissan 240sx, ORACLE Lighting stepped up and went above and beyond with one of our coolest unboxing care packages to date! Included in the package was a Dynamic ColorShift LED Underbody Kit and a 6-piece RGB LED Engine Bay Lighting Kit for Gordon's car, a ColorShift Fiber Optic Interior Lighting Kit for Rich's Lexus ES350, a Demon Eye ColorShift Illumination Kit for Julia's Hyundai Genesis, and last but not least, a Wrangler JL Cargo LED light for Patrick's Jeep 4XE. Like we said, above and beyond. Watch Gordon dig into these products in this unboxing, and explain where each one will end up and why, and also stay tuned for some installs!
ORACLE Lighting is best known for their wide variety of lighting solutions. From universal applications, to niche and model-specific lighting products, the product lineup is impressive and all-encompassing. When we had reached out for an unboxing, we were spitballing ideas on how to use an underglow kit to also add engine bay lighting to the project 240sx with additional LED strips. Rather than hack something together, ORACLE had the solution - two separate kits: One underglow kit, and one specifically designed engine bay lighting kit. With a quick visit to Design Shop React, installation was a breeze. Even though we used a lift and a second set of hands, both of these kits are simple and straightforward enough that anyone should be able to make quick work of these installs in the driveway or garage.

Installing the ISC V2 N1
Coilovers on a Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Story
y Hyundai Genesis Coupe, nicknamed “Suki,” is my first car, and the first vehicle I’ll be modifying for myself. Modification can be a daunting task, and one of the first and most important modifications you can do for your build is to upgrade your suspension. To make sure we did everything right, we trusted the experts at ISC Suspension to guide me through the process.
When I decided to make this next step in my build, I went to ISC Suspension's website. They had a few options for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which initially left me unsure. I daily drive my car, so I wanted to ensure I got the right suspension that would complement that driving style. I gave them a call and they guided me in the right direction. I decided on the V2 N1 Coilovers with the Front Triple S Spring Upgrade, Street Comfort/Sport Suggested Spring Rates and Street/Sport valving option.
I also upgraded to the gold titanium hardware, and grabbed some coilover covers to protect the investment. The parts arrived quickly and I was ready to begin the install, as soon as we unboxed them on Tuning 365 TV.
Then came the big day – installation. I'm not a certified mechanic. I've actually never done an install as big as this, but I was excited - and nervous - but mostly eager to learn. First I unpacked the ISC coilovers. First impressions are important, and ISC did not disappoint. The black and gold combo gives off a premium vibe, and I had opted for the titanium hardware, which was a nice touch. When you're modifying your car, the small details count. Even though no one is going to see my hardware or the coils themselves, ISC still decided to make these coilovers beautiful, which I appreciate.
With a friend's help, we raised the car and got to work.
Overall, the front coilover installation went smoothly. A few bolts were removed, we pulled out the stock suspension and slipped in the new coilovers. Easy. However, we hit a small snag when we couldn't figure out which coilover was meant for which side. ISC to the rescue! A quick FaceTime call later, and we were back on track. It was reassuring to have the manufacturer's support at our fingertips.
Moving on to the rear suspension, we faced the typical hiccup – stubborn bolts that just wouldn't budge. That's par for the course during an install like this. One of the things ISC mentioned when we FaceTimed them was to adjust the rear dampening before installing the rear suspension. We missed this step initially, because - well, you know how installs go. Since the Genesis Coupe doesn't have any trunk access to the rear suspension, we had to remove the rear suspension again to adjust the dampening. Frustrating, but a good lesson learned.
Alongside the coil-overs, I had Toyo Proxes Sport Tires (235/35/19 front and 265/35/19 rear) and Niche Essen Wheels (front 5x114.3, 19x8.5 35mm, and rear 19x10 40mm) from Wheel Pros. These additions significantly changed the car's look, performance, and fitment. I wasn't just lowering the car on stock wheels, I was lowering the car on an aftermarket wheel and tire setup and trying to figure out a whole new fitment. With this entirely new set up I needed to get some spacers. I ended up using 25mm on the front and 20mm on the rear to achieve a flush look that I'm really happy with.
We did a couple height adjustments, maybe 3 or 4 times, to get ride height to a place where I was content. I had to keep in mind that the suspension was going to drop at least a quarter of an inch over the settling
period. I set it to a height that I was 90% happy with, then once it fully settled I knew I'd get that extra 10%.
After the installation, it took a month of driving to feel the full benefits of the coil-overs. The ride felt very different from the stock suspension – in a good way. On regular roads, the ride is smooth and planted when taking corners. Of course bumpy roads are less forgiving, but that's the trade-off for the improved handling and aesthetics of the car. For daily driving, this setup is perfect for me.
Throughout this journey, ISC Suspension's support was constant. From helping me make the right decision on product, pre-installation tips and tricks, to troubleshooting in real time, they were there every step of the way. In the end, my experience with ISC Suspension coilovers wasn't just about upgrading my suspension. It was a journey of making mistakes, learning, and gaining the confidence to work on my own car. ISC Suspension's dedication to quality and customer satisfaction made this transformation not only possible, but also incredibly rewarding.

A coilover air cup kit is a happy medium between actual air ride and static coilovers. In fact, it takes the benefits from both, and for the most part leaves behind the negatives associated with each. That might sound too good to be true, but it’s the truth! Air cups do not sacrifice performance like a traditional air bag, and coilover air cups have the ability for instant height adjustment when needed just like air bags.

The infamous Mid-Night club, also known colloquially as Mid-Night, was a legendary and notorious group of Japanese car enthusiasts that operated from the late 1980s through the majority of the 1990s. It gained notoriety for its high-speed street racing activities on the highway loops of Tokyo and surrounding areas. The club initially started as a small gathering of car enthusiasts who shared a passion for highperformance vehicles. Over time, it grew into a more organized group that became known for its late-night races on public roads, with high speed requirements to even join them.
Mid-Night Club played a pivotal role in shaping underground car culture in Japan. The group was known for pushing the boundaries of speed and technology, and their activities set the stage for what would later become a global phenomenon. Members of Mid-Night were often at the forefront of automotive technology. They pushed the limits of their cars, experimenting with various mods and tuning techniques. The influence of Mid-Night on tuning culture cannot be overstated. Cars associated with Mid-Night, like the R34 Skyline and Toyota Supra, achieved instant notoriety among aftermarket enthusiasts. Documentaries, books, and videos of Mid-Night would go on to influence generations of car enthusiasts for years to come. One of those enthusiasts was our friend Austin Barnett, owner and operator of Billetworkz.
Barnett’s name is one that might ring some bells if you’re a long-time reader, or maybe if you’re a SEMA vehicle aficionado. Formerly gracing the halls of SEMA, as well as the cover of
an issue of PASMAG was his previous build - a Subaru WRX hatchback with an RB26DETT power plant built under his Billetworkz name. Wild as it may have been, that build was just a stepping stone on the way to his latest dream car, which would be built in collaboration with Mike Heim of Quality Custom Rides. When we met up with Barnett at SEMA 2022, he had
something new to show us: A 1976 Porsche 911 with its original air-cooled boxer engine removed and replaced by a Subaru EJ25. Before you ask (everyone does), no, it’s not the engine from his previous WRX.
The influence of Mid-Night is immediately apparent. The Auto Garage TBK front and rear bumpers give the sophisticated Porsche 930 a dose of JDM flair, and serve as a fitting allusion to Mid-Night Porsches of the past, including the infamous Yoshida Specials 930 - the prized possession of Mid-Night Club’s chairman Eichii Yoshida, and direct inspiration for Wangan Midnight’s “Blackbird” Porsche - or even the current Vice President’s own 964. Almost too

on-the-nose, the paint is a variation of Midnight Purple III by Cande Shop. Even the GT Racing RSR 3.6 rear deck lid hints at the modified Frankenstein nature of this unique 930. These design choices are subtle to most, but for fans in the know, those are the first things they notice. The 930’s appearance is a fitting tribute to the Bayshore Route’s golden era, without saying it outright via unearned window banners or knockoff Mid-Night decals.
For the most part, that is where the similarities with the Bayshore route’s street racing Porsches ends. There’s no 600+ whp monster behind the cabin, but that doesn’t make the engine setup of Barnett’s Porsche any less impressive - especially since high-

stakes street racing isn’t on his to-do list. That said, it’s no slouch either.
The EJ25 in the rear consists of an IAG900 long block and stage 4 heads, with air flow bolstered by a Corsa Veloce intake manifold and a Garrett G30-660 turbo. Fuel demand is met by ID3000 injectors, and the whole engine setup is managed by LinkECU. All in, it makes a conservative 450 whp and 400 lb-ft of torque, with potential
for more if desired, and it looks incredible thanks to Barnett’s fabrication and color-coordination.
The drivetrain is a showcase in a bit of mechanical wizardry, as you might expect. The transmission is plucked from a 2006-2007 model WRX, and the differential setup uses a reverse ring and pinion gear setup to accommodate for its backwards setup. The transmission itself is equipped with
a PPG gearset with straight-cut first and second gears, and a helical cut third and fourth. Competition Clutch handles the twin-disc clutch demands of the added power and Frankendrivetrain, and EMPI chromoly axles with Porsche 930 CV joints ensure that power makes it to the ground without too much drivetrain drama.
The classic Porsche is given some modern touches in the cockpit, without

Recaro Classic LS seats keep the vibe of the era alive, while an Exact Art reupholstery job sets it apart with a leather and alcantara medley featuring purple stitching throughout, including a rework of the custom Momo steering wheel from Carbon Fiber Element. Completing the theme in style is one of Barnett’s own Billetworkz cre-
ations, their Purple Cosmic Space Tall Teardrop shift knob atop the Numeric Racing short shifter kit.
While the car won’t be doing high speed laps of the Bayshore route anytime soon, this 911 could certainly handle it, and the aura of that capability is exuded in its appearance. The result of several years work, and the help of some incredible build partners like Jon Sibal and Mike Heim of Quality Custom Rides, has turned Barnett’s dream Porsche that he purchased back in 2018 into his dream build thanks to an esstimated 4,000 hours of combined work over the course of the build. Barnett's magnum opus was inspired by his late father. His dad is directly responsible for his passion for cars. Having seen the renders of the Porsche by Jon Sibal before his passing, we know Barnett's father is proud of what he achieved with this one. Nestled in the hills of Lancaster County, PA, Barnett’s 930 makes itself at home on the twisty roads, open highways, and parking lots of local coffee shops - a true do-it-all vehicle true to the Porsche 911’s ethos.

The road to this spot was one of the most nerve-racking trails I’ve taken in a while. It was one of the narrowest shelf roads I’ve driven and had some o -camber spots along the way. That’s what you want, right? A 500-foot drop, o -camber, and nowhere to turn around.
In one spot it was so tight my mirror was 2" from a rock face while my tire was on the opposite edge of the road. Good thing I was prepped to handle it.
