If the future is electric, then we are the future.

Experience some of the future right here at the Drive Festival. We look forward to showing you how Hyundai plans to continue to lead the way with the widest range of alternative powertrain vehicles in Canada▲. The KONA Electric was the first-ever all-electric sub-compact SUV in the country. The TUCSON, SANTA FE, SONATA and ELANTRA Hybrids offer Canadians the benefits of better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The upcoming SANTA FE and TUCSON Plug-in Hybrids will provide the flexibility and confidence of electric when you want it and gasoline when you need it. The innovative, hydrogen-powered NEXO continues to turn heads while emitting only water vapour. And later this year, Hyundai will introduce the IONIQ 5 — helping to set a new standard for electric vehicles and providing more alternative powertrain vehicles for Canadians. Visit Hyundai at the Drive Festival, experience our vehicle lineup, and test drive one today.

fter four long years of hard work spent planning and organizing, the inaugural Drive Festival, hosted at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is finally here. It’s been a challenge, but not even a global pandemic could keep Adam Ruppel, festival director and cofounder, and his team from turning this event from a concept into reality. Suffice

to say, the road to get here has been a long one and has taken some interesting turns along the way. In a recent phone conversation, Adam recounted some of the ups and downs of trying to create a new automotive event during a pandemic and how Drive Festival fits into the broader automotive cultural landscape in Canada. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

L Q: What is the Drive Festival? A: Basically, we’re doing an auto show but in a dynamic way. The event is movement – showing cars, test driving cars and showing them on our hill climb. We’re going to be running six cameras up the hill so people can see the action unfold on a Jumbotron all weekend. Q: How did the Drive Festival come to be? What was the inspiration? A: The main inspiration is the Goodwood Festival of

Speed in England. We have a hill climb which is the Dream Car Speed Run. Because nobody in Canada really knows what a hill climb is, we call it the Dream Car Speed Run. Ours is going to be a much smaller version than Goodwood, of course. We’re a first-year event, but we have some exciting cars that are partaking in the hill climb. We even have a Ford versus Ferrari, so we have an original (1966) GT40 and a 1967 206 Dino SP race car. So, we’ve got all these features lined up. Legendary Motor Cars is bringing vehicles, Pfaff is bringing a whole bunch of really cool stuff including the Pagani (Huayra Roadster BC) and McLarens. I also have a bunch of private owners bringing cars and some race teams are bringing

their race trailers and setting up in our racing area to showcase their setups. Q: What void does an event like the Drive Festival fill on the Canadian automotive calendar? A: This event is a bridge between motorsport and static car shows. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is less about the race than it is about getting a bunch of neat cars together and showcasing them in a dynamic way. That’s what we’re doing with our event. You can see these cars at the Toronto Auto Show, sitting behind ropes. The difference with our event is there’s going to be a pro driver or the owner, who are going to hop in them and do a two-kilometre sprint up a hill where you’re going to

Q: Had the pandemic not happened would the Drive Festival have taken place in 2020? A: Yes, we had it scheduled; we had Manufacturers, Sponsors, Exhibitors and Attendees all committed and then COVID just shut it down in its tracks. Q: Was Canadian Tire Motorsport Park the preferred venue from the beginning? A: Overwhelmingly, YES! It’s the only place in Ontario where we could do something like this.

see some of the world’s most exciting cars driving. If you kind of liken these cars to pieces of art, well the piece of art, a car, just sitting there statically isn’t that exciting. The most they do at car shows usually is rev them out, which is okay and is better than nothing, but when you see the car driving and revving and going up a hill it’s a whole different experience. When are you going to see an original GT40? When are you going to see a Pagani? I just got a Jaguar XJ220 coming, and all kinds of cool cars, like a Ferrari 812 Superfast. I’ve got

12

|

everything from the new stuff down to like regular GT3s and a Rothmans 944 Turbo Cup car. Q: How long has Drive Festival been in development? A: Since 2017, and by 2018 I started working on it and then it stalled out during the pandemic. Then last September I thought let’s kick the can and just lightly get it going again. The challenge with this event is that we had to put it together during COVID, which is a hard environment and last minute.

Q: How did your own experience factor into Drive Festival’s creation? A: I instruct there (at CTMP), and I’m an event promoter, so I produce mountain bike events and obstacle running live events and my business partner produces trade and consumer shows. I’m into cars, and I’ve usually had a Porsche and sometimes a race car, too. I have a race car, but it’s mothballed – that’s another story [laughs]. I’ve been instructing at the track for years. There are a lot of fragmented things in the (car) community. What isn’t covered is bringing people together for something that is different and special.

DREAM CAR SPEED RUN STO RY BY IG N I T I O N STAFF / IM AG ES BY DRIV E FESTIVAL

T

he Dream Car Speed Run was conceived of as a way for guests to dynamically experience the world’s most exciting cars. Individual owners were invited to pilot their cars up a two-kilometer hill climb individually, allowing guests

to fully experience each car as it passes. In addition each car that participates in the speed run will be displayed across the festival, so guests can take a closer look. The speed runs will be completed by the cars’ owners who will have the freedom and safety to complete the two

kilometer course at a speed of their choice. Cars are given a window of time and most should be able to make several passes on the course. Drive festival is expecting to showcase approximately 100 outstanding super cars; some of the highlights are included below.

FERRARI F40 As the successor to the 288 GTO, the F40 was designed to celebrate Ferrari’s 40th anniversary and was the last Ferrari automobile personally approved by Enzo Ferrari. At the time it was Ferrari’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive car for sale. The car debuted with a planned production total of 400 units and a factory suggested retail price of approximately US $400,000 (fivefold the price of its predecessor, the 288 GTO) in 1987 ($910,000 today). A total of 1,315 cars were manufactured with 213 units destined for the United States.

FORD GT The Ford GT is a mid-engine two-seater sports car manufactured and marketed by American automobile manufacturer Ford for the 2005 model year in conjunction with the company’s 2003 centenary. The second generation Ford GT became available for the 2017 model year. The GT recalls Ford’s historically significant GT40, a consecutive four-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1966–1969), including a 1-2-3 finish in 1966.

MCLAREN 675LT McLaren only made 500 675LT Coupe (without counting the special editions such as the MSO HS). The 675LT can accelerate from 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.9 seconds, 0.1 seconds faster than the 650S. 0–200 km/h (124 mph) in 7.9 seconds, 0–300 km/h (186 mph) in 25.9 seconds, 0–322 km/h (200 mph) in 31.2 seconds, and do the 1⁄4 mile (402 m) sprint in 10.3 seconds at 227.1 km/h (141.1 mph), continuing on to a claimed top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).

FERRARI F8 The Ferrari F8 (Type F142MFL) is a midengine sports car produced by the Italian automobile manufacturer Ferrari. The car is the successor to the Ferrari 488, with notable exterior and performance changes. It was unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show

FORD GT40, 1966 ORIGINAL The GT40 effort was launched by Ford Motor Company to win long-distance sports car races against Ferrari, which won every 24 Hours of Le Mans race from 1960 to 1965. The GT40 broke Ferrari’s streak in 1966 and went on to win the next three annual races. The Mk II’s victory in 1966 was the first win for an American manufacturer in a major European race since Jimmy Murphy’s triumph with Duesenberg at the 1921 French Grand Prix. In 1967, the Mk IV became the only car designed and built entirely in the United States to achieve the overall win at Le Mans.

FERRARI DINO 206SP, 1967 Named after Enzo Ferrari’s son, who passed in 1956, the Dino is unique in its design, history and inspiration alike. This particular Dino was featured on the cover of Issue 182 of Cavallino, a magazine dedicated to Ferrari history, in 2011. It has been verified as authentic by Ferrari, and its original owner is traced back to the iconic racing team Scuderia Filipinetti. Originally 50 were slated to be built, but only 18 of these beautiful race cars were constructed due to civil unrest in Italy and labour problems. DRIVE FESTIVAL 2021

DREAM CAR SPEED RUN

PAGANI HUAYRA ROADSTER BC, 2021 Pagani’s newest model, the result of a continuous and meticulous improvement work that sees the light after years of study and development. Roadster BC embodies the quintessence of Pagani Automobili’s artistic and scientific research, combined with unprecedented research on every aspects of the design. A completely new engine that boasts 800 hp, with one of the best weight-power ratios in the category, the Pagani V12 features a set of innovations, including two new turbos, a revolutionary hydroformed manifold, twin throttle bodies and four water- air intercoolers. The Roadster also BC features new, exclusive composite technologies based on carbon fibre and carbon-titanium that offer an increase of 12% in torsional rigidity and 20% in flexional rigidity compared to Pagani Automobili’s state of the art technology.

MCLAREN ARTURA, 2021 Underpinned by the McLaren philosophy of super-lightweight engineering, the all-new Artura is the distillation of every attribute inherent in a McLaren – distinctive design, unrivalled performance, dynamic excellence and engineering innovation – with electrification now bringing the additional benefits of even faster throttle response, lower emissions and being able to run in pure EV mode for emissions-free journeys of up to 30km. Exhilarating off-the-line’ performance sees the Artura achieve 0-100km/h in just 3.0 seconds, with 0-200km/h taking 8.3 seconds and 0-300km/h just 21.5 seconds.

MCLAREN M8E/F, 1972 The Canadian American Challenge Cup series was a unique experiment in almost complete freedom of design. So often in motorsports, strict limitations are imposed, but in the case of Can Am, just about anything went. Engines could be any displacement or design, with forced induction, outlandish aerodynamic aids, and even four-wheel drive permitted. The resulting cars. were very wild, and very fast, faster than even the contemporary Formula One cars, in fact McLaren`s own efforts were very successful in the series, amassing more victories than any other manufacturer (43) by the time the series ended in 1974. Their tremendous success began with their first monocoque car, the M6A of 1967. This car evolved into the M8A with the addition of a big block motor for 1968, and the M8B and M8D with further refinements for 1969 and 1970 respectively. The M8F was the ultimate development (aside from a pair of M20`s which were factory cars only and not available to the public) of McLaren`s successful Can Am cars, and featured a lengthened and strengthened chassis, 17 inch wide rear wheels, and revised aerodynamics. The intake stacks were staggered to smooth out the power delivery, and the combined effect of the 1520 pound curb weight and 8.3 liter engine were nothing short of spectacular, earning the moniker of “the ultimate laxative” as coined by the folks at Trojan Cars.

MERCEDES GULLWING, 1956 The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W198) was the first iteration of the SL-Class grand tourer and the. fastest production car of its day. Introduced in 1954 as a two-seat coupe with distinctive gull-wing doors, it was later offered as an open roadster. Built by Daimler-Benz AG, the direct fuel injected production model was based on the company’s highly successful yet somewhat less powerful carbureted overhead camstraight 6 1952 racer, the W194. In its enclosed aerodynamic coupe form, the Le Mans-winning 300 SL could only be entered from the top, requiring the innovative doors that were immediately christened “Gullwing.”

T

he forthcoming 2022 Hyundai Kona N is not only the latest addition to Hyundai’s growing high-performance N lineup but is also the first N model with an SUV body style. It offers a winning combination of versatility, spirited acceleration, agility and racetrack readiness. When the Kona N was revealed this past April at the Hyundai N Day showcase, the company also shared

32

N brand’s high-performance philosophy and hinted at future N models in the pipeline. Hyundai also highlighted its commitment to sustainable e-performance, giving a glimpse of the future direction for motorsport initiatives and how it will serve as a basis for upcoming N models. POWERFUL, AGILE PERFORMANCE

With technology inspired by motorsports, the N brand excels at delivering driving en-

thusiasm by providing racetrack capabilities and ‘corner rascal’ ride and handling in everyday sports cars. Kona N is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged GDI engine with an 8-speed wet dual clutch transmission (N DCT). N DCT is the enhanced version of Hyundai’s in-house developed 8DCT, an eight-speed wet-type dual-clutch transmission. To make it suitable for N models, the 8DCT received improvements in durability, allowing it to handle the demands of high-performance vehicles. With the 2.0-litre T-GDI engine, it gives the best performance

(NTS) — that maximize driving exhilaration. The powertrain delivers a maximum output of 276 horsepower, and with N Grin Shift, which can provide overboost for up to 20 seconds, the power is enhanced to 286 horsepower, maximizing driving fun. The engine offers flat power that ensures high responsiveness and improved acceleration for even more fun on the road or on the racetrack, thereby utilizing more of the engine’s potential. KONA N has a

maximum speed of 240 km/h and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, when Launch Control is activated. Hyundai Motor implemented N Corner Carving Differential, an electronic limited slip differential (E-LSD) on Kona N for control of torque distribution to driving wheels, delivering maximized fun when carving corners. Kona N also is equipped with 19-inch wheels with high-performance brakes and Pirelli P Zero summer tires.

The Kona N comes with Launch Control, Variable Exhaust System and most notably N Grin Control System, offering the same driving fun at all levels. N Grin Control System offers customers a high level of customization, with five distinct drive modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, N and Custom. These drive modes change the character of the all-new Kona N by adjusting the operating parameters of the engine, Electronic Stability Control, exhaust sound, and steering to optimise them for a variety of driving conditions. with its winning combination of everyday sports cars and its rapid rise in rally and customer racing. Together with its Motorsport division, N brand has logged victories at multiple races, including the FIA World Rally Championship, the TCR International Series, Pirelli World Challenge and Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race. Every high-performance N model — including i30 N, i30 Fastback N, Veloster N, i20 N, Kona N and

Elantra N — is designed by passionate experts and engineered at the Hyundai Motor Namyang R&D Center. Throughout the development, they go to the Nürburgring in Germany, one of the world’s most demanding racetracks, to undergo rigorous testing and validation. Through this painstaking process, N technology has been refined and born. N brand takes its name from Namyang and Nürburgring. Hyundai Motor is expanding its N and N Line lineup to 18 models globally through 2022, seven of which will be sold in Canada. The flow of new N and N Line models will include variants in each major vehicle segment, suiting the needs of all types of car enthusiasts. The 2022 Kona N will arrive at Canadian Hyundai dealers in late 2021.

NISSAN Z:

AN ICON REBORN STO RY A N D I M AG ES BY NISSAN CANADA

In 1969, a revolutionary Japanese two-door sports car made its North American debut in New York City – the Datsun 240Z. In 2021, an all-new, just as revolutionary, seventhgeneration version makes its global debut also in New York. This time, the nameplate simply reads “Z.”

hen the Z was introduced in 1969, it was a revolution. Since then, for more than 50 years, Nissan has brought style, speed, reliability and so much more to millions of enthusiasts around the world. While the six previous generations of Nissan’s iconic sports car all offered numeric designations, the long-awaited redesign will be known in Canada and North America overall simply by just one letter – Z. "The Z represents the joy of driving in its purest form and has helped shape Nissan's DNA as a passionate, innovative challenger," said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida. "Ever since the first generation, it has captured the hearts of car enthusiasts all over the world."

"Simply put, our goal is to make this the best Z yet, period. With each generation, we raise the bar, pushing the limits of Z and continuing to tap into the human instinct for that next thrilling journey”

THE ALL-NEW 2023 Z: THE REBIRTH OF AN ICON. The original 240Z was built to bring the joy and excitement of sports car ownership to as many people as possible – a car built for enthusiasts, by

enthusiasts. That spirit and heritage continues today with the launch of the latest reincarnation of Z. All 2023 Nissan Z models are equipped with a 400-horsepower 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo engine and

choice of 6-speed manual transmission with motorsports-inspired EXEDY® high-performance clutch, or a 9-speed automatic transmission with aluminum paddle shifters. With an increase of 68 horsepower and a 30 percent increase in torque, the engine is designed to deliver a sharp, yet smooth response to the driver’s input, along with an estimated 15 percent improvement in 0 to 60 mph acceleration. “Simply put, our goal is to make this the best Z yet, period. With each generation, we raise the bar, pushing the limits of Z and continuing to tap into the human instinct for that next thrilling journey,” said Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist of the new Z. “More than just powerful and agile, the 2023 Z is designed to be one with the driver for all kinds of on-road adventures.”

NISSAN Z: AN ICON REBORN

One of the defining traits of Z has always been its bond between the car and the driver – a physical and visceral connection, no matter the road ahead. That human-machine bond dominates the new Z, especially in the presence of the standard, 6-speed manual transmission. From a design standpoint, the all-new 2023 Z offers a sleek, attractive exterior with a silhouette that shows respect to its lineage. Its long hood and short deck are fundamentally Z, with a fresh look that is “love at first sight.” The design theme for the exterior and interior of the new Z was “tradition with modern technology.” Inside, the driver-centric cockpit includes a 12.3-inch customizable racing-inspired TFT metre display, available leather-appointed sports seats and an 8-speaker Bose® Audio system. "Inspired by the voices of thousands of Z owners and Z lovers, and ignited by internal conversations around the six generations of Z that have come before, we found ourselves gravitating towards the sketches that touched the high points of certain decades while remaining true to

“Ultimately, we created a Z that travels between the decades while being completely modern.” our vision of the future," said Alfonso Albaisa, global head of design at Nissan. “Ultimately, we created a Z that travels between the decades while being completely modern." The 2023 Z will be offered in Sport and Performance grade levels in the Canadian market, along

with a special Proto Spec edition, which will be available in limited quantity. The all-new, seventhgeneration 2023 Z, which drops its numerical prefix in North America for the first time, is scheduled to go on sale at Canada’s Nissan dealers in the first half of 2022.

s electrification continues to spread across the automotive industry, manufacturers of exotic sports cars are now also beginning to dip their toes into the electrified market, with new offerings that promise outstanding performance and improved efficiency. The forthcoming McLaren Artura, the British automaker’s first plug-in hybrid, provides a good example of how performance is evolving among supercar automakers. With the Artura, McLaren charts a new course with a car that carries not just a new design

40

and powertrain, but also an all-new platform, the McLaren Carbon Fibre Lightweight Architecture (MCLA). This high-strength, yet lightweight monocoque tub weighs just 82 kg (181 pounds) and is made from four types of carbon

fibre, with a new resin system and a new core material for that produces industry-leading strength and stiffness, according to McLaren. To that end, the Artura has a dry weight (no passengers or fluids) of 1,395 kg (3,075 pounds), and a curb weight of 1,498 kg (3,303 pounds).

The Artura’s hybrid powertrain is comprised of an all-new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine that puts 577 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque to the ground through the rear wheels via McLaren’s 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that includes

steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Working in tandem with the gas powerplant is an axial-flux electric motor that weighs just 15 kg (33 pounds) yet produces 94 horsepower. Combined output is rated at 671 horsepower and 531 lb-ft. of torque. As for the

battery pack, the Artura is equipped with a 7.4 kWh lithium-ion unit that can achieve an 80 percent charge in just 2.5 hours. On the chassis front, the Artura sports new suspension geometry that doubles the stiffness of the old system, while also adding hundreds of kilograms of downforce, according to McLaren. The suspension itself features aluminum double wishbones up front, with an upper wishbone and lower multi-link set-up in the rear, along with independent adaptive dampers. Drivers can tune the ride to their preference via comfort, sport and track driving modes. Another interesting piece of new tech being

rolled out in the Artura is McLaren’s first-ever electronic differential, which controls torque delivery across the rear axle. The new e-unit is smaller and lighter than the mechanical version and is being used in the Artura for better control when drifting and for improved traction while accelerating out of corners. In terms of design, the Artura’s lines are all-new, yet are also signature McLaren. “Low and lean. Minimal and powerful,” as the company puts it in their marketing materials. The Artura is a new interpretation of McLaren design language that is crisp and handsome, yet also functional. Airflow and heat management have been incorporated into the Artura’s bodywork, as has a low centre of gravity.

In the cabin, the Artura has a driver-oriented cockpit where powertrain and handling controls have been placed within fingertip reach of the driver. This has been done to create minimal distraction so the driver can keep their hands on the wheel and eyes focused on the road ahead. Speaking of steering, the Artura utilizes an electro-hydraulic

system to provide more precise feedback. Other cabin touches include new HD touchscreens, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. But here’s what you really need to know: while it is a plug-in hybrid, the Artura is still McLaren fast. 0-100 km/h in three seconds flat with a top track speed of 330 km/h. Enough said.

The 2022 McLaren Artura will arrive in Canada in late 2021 / early 2022.
