WAY BACK WHEN WE DETERMINED WHAT MAKES A PROPER STREET CAR, I BOILED IT DOWN TO THREE MAIN FACTORS: RELIABILITY, COMFORT, AND STYLE. AFTER ADDRESSING BOTH RELIABILITY AND COMFORT IN THE PREVIOUS TWO CHAPTERS, I FINALLY REACHED THE CRESCENDO OF THE ENTIRE BUILD - STYLE. THE ENTIRE TWO-YEAR PROCESS OF TURNING SOMEONE’S OLD TRACK TOY INTO THE PERFECT STREET CAR HAD FINALLY REACHED THE HOME STRETCH.
IT’S
important to note that style is ultimately subjective, but some things are universal. Things like proportions, lines, color scheme, fitment, and overall composition are all factors in building a car in which all parts work together to create a cohesive theme or look. This meant that my S13’s badly-fitting OEM aero and mismatched gray panels were on the chopping block as I planned a total transformation from top to bottom. Luckily for me, BASF offered to partner up with us for this portion of the build, and I couldn’t be happier to have the world’s best paint company helping me out. They introduced me to Kingsmen Kustoms in Mississauga, an incredible custom shop that specializes in bringing dreams to reality. In a meeting with both BASF and Kingsmen Kustoms, we narrowed down the three things that make up any car’s style points: overall theme, fitment, and color scheme.

These parts give an aggressive look while still remaining relatively subtle overall. With all due respect to the “big wang gang,” little changes that you only notice upon closer inspection are definitely my style.

If you’re looking to build something that will remain timeless in its looks, you’ll need an overarching theme to tie everything together. Throwing everything that sticks at a car can result in overkill, even if it does take home the hardware at some shows (and there’s nothing wrong with that). For me, less is more. I’ve always had a particular affinity for period correct “OEMplus” JDM cars, and I wanted my 240sx to emulate the style of the golden era of 180sx drift cars, even if I don’t drift (I know, ironic name for the project). In addition to lowering the car substantially, a full RPS13 Type-X aero kit, the same offered from Japanese OEM Nissan at the time, was the key to simple Japanese styling, and would be a perfect fit for the Type X tail lights I installed back in Chapter 1. I still wanted to spice things up just a little bit for that OEM-plus look, so I sourced a D-Max roof spoiler, a low profile Origin Labo trunk spoiler, Origin Labo +20-mm vented fenders, some Ganador mirrors, and N1-style front bumper vents originally made for R33 GT-Rs.
FITMENT
When we use the word fitment, the first thing that comes to mind is wheel and tire fitment. While that was also addressed in previous chapters, fitment, when it comes to overall style, also refers to the fitment of body panels, aero, and other aftermarket exterior modifications. Sure, I could just unbolt my old pig-nose front bumper and bolt the Type X front end in its place, but the gaps between panels would persist. This is where Kingsmen Kustoms’ expert eye came in handy. With careful measuring and some neat body shop tools I had never seen before, like a contour measuring
gauge, Claudio La Gatta and his family team got to work ensuring my Type X aero would fit to the body with minimal gap between pieces, and cleaned up the rough body. Because the fenders and spoiler are fiberglass, unlike the Type X kit, which is easily workable polyurethane, some trimming and fitting was required to achieve perfect fitment. Ultimately, that ended up being the easy part, as the front end of the car had been slightly warped after a long life. A bit of tough love and manhandling of the front end, and the S13 started to look straighter than I had

ever seen it, with equally spaced gaps between hood and headlight on both sides, as well as proper fitment for the new fenders. If you’re tackling panel or aero fitment at home in the garage, it’s good to keep in mind that polyurethane will become easier to shape with heat, whereas fiberglass requires trimming and fitting repeatedly until it fits right. Patience is key, so keep and eye on your body lines, gaps between panels, and symmetry on both sides of the car as you take your time fitting aero.

began two years prior, and it would work really well with the new deep chrome coating on my Nismo wheels. Thanks to some help from an assortment of 3M prep products, my 50 shades of gray paint was stripped off, and the body was sanded, blocked, and primered. Once non-paintable areas were masked off, it was off to the spray booth for a multi-stage process. First the base coats, then the mid-coats with extra pearls, and finally a protective clear coat for the glossy effect. The final product is a custom blend, derived from Porsche’s Jet Green Metallic paint (also a BASF product), with a special blend of bluegreen pearl in the mid-coat in order to give the paint added depth. When the car was revealed to me after being away for a month behind closed doors where I couldn’t watch the process unfold, I was utterly speechless. The paint changes hues depending on the lighting and the angle you look at it, and the combination of the deep green and the flashes of blue pearls in the light blend the subtlety I was seeking with the wow-factor I secretly wanted the whole time.

THE FINAL PRODUCT
When I first embarked on this project two years ago, I had no idea what I was in for. The process of taking someone’s old gutted track toy and bringing it back to perfect street comfort was a long journey, with lots of work and related stress along the way, but I learned so much from the whole experience that I would happily do it all again. The car was made reliable, comfortable, and finally, thanks to BASF and Kingsmen Kustoms, cleaned up to what I consider peak street style. None of this would have been possible without the friends and partners who helped me every step of the way, and that’s what this whole crazy scene we all know and love is really about, isn’t it? All together, the stylistic transformation came together even better than I had ever imagined. The aero additions give the car a subtle yet aggressive look I was after, without going overboard, and the deep paint lends even more to that theme when coupled with the deep chrome powdercoat on the wheels. All in, the recipe equates to an OEM-plus look that I think will remain timeless as

my time of ownership with this car extends beyond this project and into the future. It’s been more fun than I’d ever had getting to this point, but it’s still a relief to be “finished” - at least as finished as I needed with respect to the project. For now, I’ll be enjoying the car on the road and at the track, instead of at the back of a shop. Finally, the perfect street car.

Calvert’s take on Toyota’s pickup is something that we think McFly would tell his girlfriend he’d own one day if Back to the Future had taken place in 2017, plus it’ll make anything from Huey Lewis and the News and beyond sound out of this timeline.

OR THOSE THAT MAY NOT ALREADY KNOW, MOBILE ELECTRONICS COMPETITION ASSOCIATION (MECA) IS A LONG-STANDING CAR AUDIO CHAMPIONSHIP GOVERNING BODY THAT HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 1999, way back when the booming popularity of car audio was just beginning to take over the scene. Almost two decades of showcasing SQL and SPL competitions, show and shines, lighting exhibitions, and even competition for kids has gained MECA a prestigious position at the top of the mobile electronics industry, and is considered the pinnacle of audio competition by many audio enthusiasts. In 2016, the MECA community lost one of their best, a close friend and advocate by the name of Chris Zenner. A charter member and R&E committee member for the club and contest organization, Zenner was instrumental in the rapid growth and success of MECA as a whole. Remembered as a music lover, as well as a sound quality fanatic, a new award was added to the possible accolades for future MECA shows - the Zenner SQL Best of Show award. The Zenner SQL Best of Show award combined the prowess of overall sound

quality, install quality, and RTA Freq Out scores, culminating in an award that properly honors Zenner, who was often referred to as “the human RTA.” This year, the winner of the prestigious award was a man by the name of Robert E Bess, who runs Audio Specialists. Based in Clarksville, Tennessee, the shop churns out a good amount of custom audio builds, so it’s no surprise that Bess has the experience required to build a show-stopper. The build that took home the award for Bess is his 2005 Acura TL, a build he says he is proud to call the best sounding car in the world. Sure, that’s a bold claim - but Bess can back it up. Having built world class audio competition cars since 1991, long before some of our readers were even born, it’s safe to say he’s got an ear for audio detail. Not to mention the fact that he went into this very build with intentions to build a competition-dominating vehicle with the experience he had picked up over the years. When it comes to overall sound quality, sometimes less is more. You won’t find a comically large wall of 100 speakers in the back of the Acura TL - this build is all about making it

sound right. As far as raw hardware goes, nine-inch drivers are found in the doors, and a pair of 15-inch subwoofers handle the bass demands. Supplying the power between the in-dash iPad and the speaker sets is a collection of six Zapco amplifiers. Of course, hardware isn’t everything, and even a finely tuned system such as Bess’ needs to impress judges on all fronts to win the Zenner, so installation had to be just as showstopping as the system sounded. This is where Bess’ years of experience at Audio Specialists started to show. The
trunk is a beautiful display of cascading amplifiers, each one with a transparent top plate. Between them, below the custom Zapco nameplate, a set of switches. One for spot lights, one for “alien lights,” and one for a fan. The unique bits don’t end in the trunk, either. Under the hood on top of the battery cover is a cleverly integrated XS Power power supply and battery charger unit, alongside some special terminals. Inside the cabin, things are kept neat and clean with an in-dash iPad installation so sleek that it looks like a factory upgrade, located just above a Sony head unit and a neatly integrated digital volt gauge. With all of this and more to take in when judging Bess’ TL, as well as the absolutely impeccable sound quality emitted from the system, it’s no surprise to anyone who has seen or heard that car that Bess takes home the Zenner award hardware and prestige. Congratulations to Bess on a quality build done well! We’re sure Zenner would be proud.

NATURALLY,
as BMW didn’t offer a version of the V8 used in the M3 GTR, Porsche complained that the car was more of a prototype and went against the rules, so ALMS rolled out new stipulations for its racers: make a road-going version of the race car available to buy in two continents. In response, BMW made 10 M3 GTRs available to the public (only actually building six) that were detuned to 382 horsepower. The following year, ALMS went even more aggressive on the rules, stating that 100 cars and 1,000 engines would have to be made for sale in order for a team to not incur penalties. As a result, BMW chose to pull out of ALMS, but went on to win first and second place with two cars in the 24 Hours Nurburgring in 2004 and 2005. Also in 2005, the E46 M3 GTR made its appearance as a modified street car in the Need for Speed: Most Wanted video game, touting its silver and blue livery, and capturing the hearts of a whole generation of budding car enthusiasts - nine-year-old Andre Klebleyev included. “I Googled the car the same day I saw it and found out it was an E46 M3 GTR, which made me want an E46 M3 ever since,” he explains of his fascination. “Although I love JDM platforms and have had six JDM cars prior to getting the M3, I knew I’d get it eventually.”

As you can imagine, owning an E46 M3 seemed like a dream, financially, to a young guy like Klebleyev. Opting to go for cheaper price tags and cost of maintenance, he’s owned an assortment of Subarus and Nissan S-chassis along the way, with his last being a kouki- and RHD-converted 1995 240SX with an RB20 swap. After fooling around with the car in the show scene, and even dipping his toes in drifting, Klebleyev’s bank account was draining with the strain of the problematic

RB engine, so he sold it for cash and looked for his next project. As fate would have it, a clean, manual E46 M3 coupe priced for a quick sale had become available not too long after he’d said goodbye to the 240, and so Klebleyev pulled the trigger on making his childhood dreams a reality. All along his life of owning modified cars, Klebeleyev has done anything and everything to them himself to save dough, so when it came time to own a high-maintenance M3 and turn it into the car he remembers from the video game he loved, it was only natural that it would come to fruition in his singlecar garage. “I’ve loved cars since I was a kid, but I’ve never had the money to pay people to do the work, so I was simply forced to learn to do it myself,” Klebleyev says. “I fell in love with doing it all myself.” This attitude, plus a no-what-ifs thought process led to what Klebleyev calls “V1” of his tribute to the Most Wanted M3 GTR. The first version of the M3 was completely remodelled with DTM FiberWerkz’s E46 GTR widebody kit, plus a carbon fiber roof and vented hood. Though it is labelled as a “GTR” kit, it’s not totally accurate to the kit on the car from the video game and nowhere near wide enough, but being as it was one of the most accessible on the market at the time, Klebleyev installed it and painted it in the Need For Speed livery himself, then decided to pair it with an APR GT250 wing for a race-worthy look. Saving some cash on some used KW V1 coilovers and a previously enjoyed set of concave APEX EC-7 wheels, he was able to splurge
on a pair of Recaro SPG seats for the front of the car to be even further accurate to the GTR. One more detail that Klebleyev was set on making true to the on-screen car was its side-exit exhaust, which he fabricated himself and even cut, welded, and tunnelled the floor to bring to life. The whole process of turning a stock E46 M3 into a GTR replica took Klebleyev from about October of 2017 to March of 2018, which is great pace for one dude in his garage. Only a month later though, and the itch wasn’t scratched. Klebleyev had ordered a custom widebody kit from a manufacturer in the UK that would be much closer to the Need for Speed GTR in looks and width, and while he waited, he had an FIA-spec eight-point roll cage fabricated, as well as some stiffer springs in the mail for his KW coils. As the summer of 2018 turned to fall, the gears of PASMAG’s Tuner Battlegrounds Championship started

MOST WANTED to spin again, and Klebleyev, still waiting for his kit to come from across the pond, chanced it and entered the playoffs with a car in pieces. In the Stage one elimination round of September, 2018, Klebleyev rallied his sizeable following on Instagram and YouTube to amass 1,799 votes - 793 more than the next closest competitor - a pace that he would keep for the rest of the competition. While it was humbling to see so much support on his end, the stress quickly piled on as he had less than two months, if he made it to SEMA, to finish the next iteration of his M3! After three stages of TBG voting, leaving only three more before SEMA, the widebody finally arrived, though not exactly as Klebleyev imagined. Test fitting of the front and rear bumpers went poorly and the front fenders needed some working over as well to fit the rendering in his mind. With voting going so well and the reality of showing off the car at SEMA getting closer and closer, Klebleyev dove right in. He reshaped the front and rear bumpers for fitment, shaving the exhaust cutouts from the rear, while also cutting out spots for the M3 vents, as well as lower vents in the front fenders. Soon, the BMW was primed and painted, again, by Klebleyev in his single-car garage, just as he learned that he would be one of the finalists in the TBG Championship. He picked away at final touches on the car all the way up until the moment it went on the Vegas-bound car hauler. The next time he saw his creation, it would be at SEMA. “It was pretty surreal,” Klebleyev recalls of learning he was in the top two. “The first thing that hit me was, ‘Holy crap, I’m going to Vegas with my car!’ SEMA itself was amazing and I loved seeing all sorts of builds with insane amounts of effort and thought

I was drooling over all the purpose-built race cars there.” During the week of competition at SEMA, Klebleyev and his girlfriend, Rachel (a different Rachel, not our other finalist), hustled hard for votes online and completed many of the challenges we issued during the show. On the final day of competition, Klebleyev had earned 128 hashtag votes, 179 points from the Editor’s Challenge, and 2,963 clicks of the gold star button on TunerBattlegrounds.com for a total of 3,270 votes, crowning him your Tuner Battlegrounds Champion of 2018. Since winning, Klebleyev hasn’t stopped for a second. He drove the

There’s something to be said for a car that can do it all, and that’s definitely been a driving force behind the lasting legacy that is Subaru’s WRX STI. Over the years, we’ve been treated to witnessing the STI name dominate both on- and off-road, as well as be transformed into some impressive creations through the show circuit and beyond. There’s something even more to be said for someone who can take such a potent platform, and make it excel in all avenues without sacrificing any functionality. We think that Rachel Ellingsen has done an outstanding job with her WRX STI, and we’re not alone - hundreds of people voted her through to the final round of 2018’s Tuner Battlegrounds Championship.

fascination with cars started at a young age, watching her father work away at rebuilding a motor, while she sat on a pile of spare tires and handed him a wrench here and there between explanations of different parts and tools and how they work. Fast forward to 2010 and Ellingsen had finally acquired a car to channel that inherited passion into: a 2000 Acura Integra GSR. “Little did I know, this car was going to be my gateway drug to a neverending addiction of financial havoc,” she laughs, thinking back. Her first test would come only three weeks later, when a small electrical fire started in the engine bay that left her with two options: fix it or make

it faster. Naturally, a K-swap was in order, and thanks to an extra push from her husband, Gabe, who owns a pretty sweet 1,200-wheel-horsepower S2000, the Integra soon had a fullybuilt, all-motor K20/K24. The engine was assembled and installed by the couple in their garage, with a few friends pitching in to help out along the way, like wiring master Aniel from AP Racing. The Integra is still a work in progress, so while it’s fine and dandy to have a money pit, you need a car you can actually drive. That’s where the STI comes in. “I really hadn’t ever ventured into the Subaru world until Gabe, my husband, told me about an STI for sale one day,” Ellingsen explains. “Right away, I was hooked, even though I had never been inside one and literally knew nothing about them.” Looking for more information about the Subaru she just bought, Ellingsen joined a Facebook group called “Oklahoma Subies” to pick up some tips and tricks from local like-minded owners. This is where she realized the mistake that she had just made. A post on the group from an excited

new owner of a red 2015 WRX STI made her realize what was wrong: that STI was the one she wanted, not the used one she had just picked up! Not long afterwards, her very own Lighting Red STI showed up at the dealership, and was ready to be molded into Ellingsen’s vision. “Originally, I had purchased the car with the goals of just having bolt-ons, coils, and wheels, so it would be a nice-sounding daily,” she recalls. “Every time I added something, I would find out that if I just upgraded one other corresponding item, it would significantly enhance the whole performance of my car, and here we are!” This build philosophy of “just one more part” eventually led to the tasteful mixture of aesthetically pleasing and functional components we were treated to at SEMA in Las Vegas. Wrapped in Avery Dennison’s Roaring Thunder color-shifting vinyl and treated to a host of carbon fiber goodies, like the bare Seibon front fenders and hood, plus the APR Performance canards and 67-inch GTC-300 wing, the Subaru projects an air of performance that it can absolutely back up. Ellingsen’s favorite modification, her Air Lift Performance air suspension system, makes that all possible. “My favorite thing about my car is the combination of being able to go to the track, have a ton of fun making passes, and when I'm done, pressing

that air-out button and being able to look great,” she says, proudly. “I love being able to disprove people about air ride not being a trackable suspension.” Swapping over her Work Durandals to some Gram Lights 57DRs on Advan Sport tires, Ellingsen then airs up to a functional height, runs some passes at the track, and when she’s done, she then airs out and heads home. She also isn’t stock under the hood, which ironically enough came about in the same sort of way her Integra did. After a solid day of sending it, a ringland failure on cylinder four (#SubaruProblems) put a pause on her fun and left her with two choices: fix it or make it faster. Due to her history with issues like this, we already know the choice she made. The STI’s EJ257 boxer was rebuilt with a Supertech valvetrain, CP 10:1 pistons, Manley H-beams, and a much juicier fuel system to support some new boost, plus compatibility with E85. One of Forced Performance’s Zero ball bearing turbos was planted on the engine, the top-mount intercooler was swapped for a front-mount Mishimoto offering, and through the COBB AccessPort V3 and running E85, the Subaru puts out a dyno’d 530 horsepower and 537 lb-ft of torque - 225 more horses and 246 more lb-ft than a WRX STI rolling off the showroom floor. With such a complete build and a solid backing from her club, Team Diverse, Ellingsen entered her car in the Tuner Battlegrounds Championship, thinking she could do fairly well. It wasn’t until Team Diverse’s Oklahoma chapter was screaming and cheering across a local pizza joint while watching the final point standings live stream that she realized just how far she’d come.

“After the final announcement, I kept reminding my husband, ‘Holy crap, we’re going to SEMA!’ Ellingsen chuckles. “Pulling up to SEMA and seeing the transport truck that picked up my car put it all into perspective. Watching the car roll out and into the Las Vegas air, it was like I heard my brain say, ‘Here we go!’” Ellingsen and her husband hit the ground running every day of the competition, completing virtually every one of the Editor’s Challenge obstacles we could throw at them, and Ellingsen even came home with the fastest NASCAR lap around Las Vegas Motor Speedway at Richard Petty’s Driving Experience, courtesy of McLeod Racing. Unfortunately, her social following and pull couldn’t quite match her competitor’s, causing him to pull ahead and win, but Ellingsen was totally positive about the outcome. “Naturally, I was bummed,” she says. “I had prepared myself earlier in the day and reminded myself that I had just spent a week in Vegas though, so no matter who won, we both had a pretty awesome time.”
