elcome to season 19! It’s crazy to think that Formula DRIFT is almost 20 years old. The last few years have been a crazy ride that I’m sure none of us would have expected. COVID changed the landscape for everyone, but having weathered the worst of it in 2020, our 2021 season became time to prove what the sport is all about, and boy did that happen. On every single metric that we track, 2021 was the biggest and best year the sport has ever had. Every single live event was not only the biggest we have ever seen for each round, but each round was also a sold out event. The live stream broadcasts hit new highs, and we also saw arguably the closest championship in years. At the same time - for the first time - we saw a driver retirement, in Daijiro Yoshihara after 19 years of competing. Additionally, another veteran Vaughn Gittin Jr has decided to take some time off to develop other projects, but has said that he will be back. And yet, in their absence, the driver development has really taken off, and for the first time in FD history, vehicle car count will be maxed out with 37 drivers competing in both the PRO and PROSPEC Championship. The 2022 season smells like one that could make the record books yet again. This sport never ceases to amaze us with what it has the power to do, not just in motorsports, but also culturally. The sport, which many still consider a red-headed step child of traditional motorsports, has taken many steps in just the past two years in achieving mainstream acceptance. We want to thank all the fans, drivers, teams, and sponsors for the continued support through COVID, and we are so happy that last year was an explosive year that showed the power and resilience of the sport. We’re stoked to be back on the front lines of the Formula DRIFT grid, bringing you the latest FD content in all its many forms, and helping newcomers get acquainted with this larger-than-life, high octane, rolling car show. Last year, the 18th annual Formula DRIFT season staged an epic comeback after an uncertain year prior. You guys - the fans made it all possible, and we were happy to be along for the ride. This year, we can already tell that things are getting bigger and better. A BRIEF HISTORY OF FORMULA DRIFT 2003 AUGUST Drift founders Jim Liaw & Ryan Sage bring competition drifting to America by organizing an exhibition competition for the Japanese Series D1 Grand Prix at Irwindale Speedway. NOVEMBER An announcement is made at SEMA Show 2003 about the creation of the Formula Drift Championship series.

2004 FEBRUARY Road Atlanta paves the infamous "horseshoe" in turn 10, making it perfect for drifting. MAY Formula Drift holds their first ever round at Road Atlanta.

AUTO MANUFACTURER & TIRE CUP Introduced in 2013, the Auto Manufacturer Cup and Tire Cup will be awarded for the tenth consecutive year in 2022.

e all know that the Formula DRIFT Pro Championship and PROSPEC Championship rounds are the primary goals for all drivers on the grid, but there are two other competitions simultaneously happening within the Formula Drift season. Earning the top spot on each podium is obviously the goal for each driver at their respective events, but earning points towards the Auto Manufacturer Cup and Tire Cup can be considered just as important when it comes to sponsorships and industry recognition. For both of these competitions, the top two qualifying drivers eligible for each cup will contribute points to their brand’s standing in the series. Here’s a closer look and more detailed explanation of the Auto Manufacturer Cup and Tire Cup competitions.

AUTO MANUFACTURER CUP The Auto Manufacturer Cup competition is designed to showcase competition cars that utilize an engine which matches the manufacturer of the chassis. At each round, the top two eligible drivers from each vehicle manufacturer will earn points towards that manufacturer’s standings. These drivers are not from a predetermined selection, nor do they need to remain the same from round to round. Decisions regarding the engine and vehicle manufacturer eligibility are determined by Formula DRIFT's Technical Regulations Manager. For the purpose of this competition, cars are allowed to have engine swaps, but the engine itself must originate from the same manufacturer as the chassis in order to remain eligible for Auto Manufacturer Cup points. and chassis combinations for this cup can still earn points in regular competition, as well as for the Tire Cup. In 2021, Toyota found its way back to the top spot once again, after being temporarily dethroned by Ford the year

prior. The battle remained right between the two, as Ford’s second place spot was only 13 points behind Toyota. Nissan stayed in third place for the third consecutive year, with Chevrolet rising to fourth which sent BMW sliding into fifth place.

TIRE CUP Competition among tire manufacturers has always been fierce, especially in motorsports, but had never formally been recognized in sanctioned competition at Formula Drift until the Tire Cup championship was announced for Formula DRIFT’s 2013 season. At each competition round, the top two drivers on each tire brand will earn points towards the Tire Cup for their respective manufacturer. Similar to the Auto Manufacturer Cup championship, drivers earning these points do not need to be the same for each round, and do not need to be predetermined.

In 2021, Nitto managed to stay on top for a second consecutive year after toppling Falken’s four-year tenure on top thanks to widespread support on the grid, and consistent performance from their sponsored top-tier drivers. GT Radial, who joined the battle just last year, managed to rise to third place in just their second year in competition.

fter a difficult 2020 season, Formula DRIFT’s organizers had their work cut out for them in 2021. Introducing two new stops for the year, 2021 proved to be one of Formula DRIFT’s most successful years in history, setting the stage for an even bigger and better 2022 season this year. For this year, Erie Speedway is out of the rotation, and Utah Motorsports Cam-

pus - one of North America’s most impressive motorsports facilities - is placed into the fold for the second to last PRO event, which will also be the finale for the PROSPEC championship. The action for the year kicks off on April 1st with the perfect way to start the season on the Streets of Long Beach, and carries through the season to the grand finale in Irwindale on October 14-15.

Formula Drift PRO Championship The Formula DRIFT PRO circuit kicks off 2022 on the Streets of Long Beach on the weekend of April 1-2. After that, drivers and teams head out to Road Atlanta for the second round on May 6-7, before making the trip down south to Orlando for the May 19-21 weekend. From there, they’ll travel back up the east coast for one of the crowd favorites: Englishtown’s Old Bridge Township Raceway Park on June 9-11 weekend. The St. Louis stop comes shortly after on July 14-16, followed by a trip to Monroe, Washington for the August 5-6 event. After that comes 2022’s newest venue, as drivers make their way to the much anticipated Utah Motorsports Campus event for September 15-17. Finally, the grand finale takes place at the iconic Irwindale Speedway on October 14-15 to close out the season. A healthy mix of familiar locations and a new track should shake up the standings once again this year!

Formula DRIFT Link ECU PROSPEC Championship

Formula DRIFT partners with Acceler8 education program to help at-risk youth

What was once known as the “PRO2 Championship” was changed to the Formula DRIFT Link ECU PROSPEC Championship. The new name also brought in a handful of new rules, including a mandate for an H-pattern shifter, so no more sequentials at this level. Every PROSPEC driver is throwing those gear shifts themselves! Additionally, GT Radial is the single tire supplier for PROSPEC drivers. The popular series that feeds into PRO licensing continues to attract talented drivers from all over, and this year those drivers will be treated to events alongside the Pro Championship at Orlando, Englishtown, St. Louis, and Utah rounds.

As part of its ongoing community outreach, Formula Drift is proud to announce it has partnered with Acceler8 – a Californiabased automotive education and workforce development program. Established and run by Law Enforcement personnel, Acceler8 reaches high school students considered “at risk” due to behavior issues, academic status, family situations, and more. It also seeks to assist "opportunity youth," which the DoE identifies as students aged 16-24 who are neither enrolled in school nor participating in the labor market. The unique Acceler8 model pairs at-risk youth with volunteer law enforcement officers and automotive professionals. With all parties drawn by a common automotive passion, students receive support from stable adult role models at a formative time in their lives. They receive support to complete school, acquire skills that excite them, and prepare them for jobs in the wide automotive sector. As the Education Partner for Formula DRIFT, Acceler8 will invite youth from local communities throughout the 2022 national tour. The students will receive an up-close look at professional drift teams and the automotive industry while speaking to crews, drivers and FD personnel. They will also have the opportunity to watch their favorite drivers perform during the FD weekend. In addition to the student tours, Acceler8 will be on-hand at each round to demonstrate its automotive educational programs to all event attendees. If you’d like to assist the Acceler8 program, there are many ways you can help. The team is always in need of additional funding through grants, company sponsorship, or individual donations. Companies can also help by providing job training or placement for students who complete the program. S E T A D P U ODI BAKCHIS INVESTS IN A SPARE CHASSIS

Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis has spent several seasons in the upper echelons of Formula DRIFT’s rankings, and that’s something his sponsors have obviously enjoyed. Their help has allowed him to build up his “other” S14, a car he would use for demos, as well as a spare chassis in case of unforeseen catastrophic failure during the FD year. A Wisefab angle kit, a tubular front end, and a roll cage are just some of the newest additions to the spare S14 chassis over the off-season.

CHELSEA DENOFA FLOWING AND LOOKING EVEN BETTER Chelsea DeNofa’s RTR Mustang has been a rock solid chassis over the past few years, but there’s always room for improvement, right? With the help of a 2021 model’s intake manifold, DeNofa says it will provide more power through the entirety of the powerband. To top it off, his Mustang has a new livery to stand out on the grid!

RYAN TUERCK TRIES SOMETHING NEW Ryan Tuerck is always busy building something cool. Between his several drift demo cars, his FD Pro program, and the insane stuff like his Formula Supra, he’s always got something on the go. The latest addition to the Tuerck stable is an iconic piece of motorsport history in the form of a ‘90s Celica GT4 codenamed #BettyWhite. The plan is a well built 3S Beams engine and a proper heritage build to pay homage to the car’s motorsports history. We can’t wait to see this!

The new Z is set to become Forsberg’s new competition chassis. This is going to look great on the grid!

As one of the newest names in the Formula DRIFT Pro Championship grid, Travis Reeder is always looking for ways to keep his skill sets sharp during the off-season. In addition to getting as much drifting in as he can, Reeder also spent some time driving in Lucky Dog Racing League’s endurance races.

Michael Essa and his race program are always looking at ways to continually improve. This year, this improvement comes courtesy of a fresh engine with VAC Motorsports sleeves. This will allow them to go for a bit higher compression, with the goal of trying for 1,100 whp.

A closer look at Formula DRIFT’s newest stop.

ast year, the Formula DRIFT circuit saw the addition of both Englishtown Raceway and Erie Speedway stops for one of the most successful years in the series’ history. In order to keep things fresh and exciting once again this year, the stop at Erie Speedway has been replaced with a stop at Utah Motorsports Campus. Located in Grantsville, Utah, the 511-acre facility is Utah’s largest outdoor event venue, and is considered by many to be the finest and most diverse motorsports facility in North America. Racing surfaces include a 4.5-mile multi-configurational road racing track, a 0.9-mile karting facility, an eight-acre rock crawling course, a seven-acre skidpad, a 22-acre high-speed off-road short course with covered grandstand seating for approximately 14,000, and a unique rallycross course that hosts the Nitro World Games.

In addition to its motorsports activities, UMC specializes in creating customdesigned corporate and group events with conference and classroom facilities available complete with full catering and audio-visual options. In addition to the FD PRO teams, Utah Motorsports Park will also host the final round of the PROSPEC series, giving the teams an opportunity to shine ahead of the PRO Final at Irwindale Speedway just one month later. The weekend format introduced in 2021 will remain in place, with PRO and PROSPEC teams qualifying on Friday utilizing the Knockout Qualifying Format, which sees each driver run once before the bottom eight qualifiers run a second time to secure their qualification or risk elimination. FIRST OF ALL, OBVIOUSLY A BIG CONGRATULATIONS. THIS IS YOUR FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP WIN SINCE 2015, SO THAT'S A PRETTY BIG DEAL. HOW DOES IT FEEL NOW THAT IT'S ALL OVER, AND NOW THAT THERE'S ANOTHER SEASON ON THE HORIZON? So the curve - going through the season there's some ups and downs, right? It's like a roller coaster ride. And then some serious issues before Long Beach, the second to last round where I injured my shoulder pretty badly, and I was driving long beach with - not a big cast, but a lot of support - and managed to get a second place podium there. Going into Irwindale, I honestly didn't believe that we were gonna take the championship. Statistically, I thought that we had less than a 50% chance of clinching the championship, so when it happened that rollercoaster ride went into this crazy high. It's unbelievable to describe what it feels like, especially when you're competing against much better drivers and equipment than when we won in 2015. Everyone's gotten really good. So there was a couple of weeks there of pretty intense partying. We went to the desert, we were doing lots of fun stuff, burnt down a Razor to the ground, and like a lot of things happened in the aftermath.

It was a lot of fun. And then Christmas came around, everything kind of flattened out. And now I'm back to the daily grind. So you know, that championship is all in the past now. Obviously I'm proud of what it did, but it's all history at this point.

AFTER THIS MANY YEARS OF COMPETING, YOU'VE SOLIDIFIED YOURSELF AS A VETERAN. WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE LEVEL OF COMPETITION OVER THE SIX YEARS BETWEEN CHAMPIONSHIPS? I definitely [have] become a veteran. I have a couple gray hairs. Luckily, can't see them too well, but they're there. I feel like I say this every year that the drivers and the equipment gets better. It sounds like a cliche, but it's true. And I think that there's been some milestones throughout time with FD where drivers have come in - really skilled drivers from other parts of the world

- and really elevated the game: Diago in 2012, James and Piotr in 2017. And they kind of show us that next level of driving. I think that as good as James is, he's pretty much arguably the world's best at everything, perhaps, except really pushing the bar with car set up and really being innovative with that. And that's where I feel like Formula D excels. Formula D always brings these new ideas, right? This very American mindset of turning the Japanese sport into something of their own. I think when Piotr and James left in 2020, it left the field stronger, better, and hungrier than ever. I think there are several guys that are at the caliber of James and Piotr now. You know, Chelsea, Matt, Odi, and other guys too. I think it comes down to the harder the punches you receive, the more you learn. If you look at the top four in FD, now they're all these super nerdy deep into drifting guys. Like it's our lifestyle, right? So Odi has his specialties, Chelsea has this way of understanding drifting, and Matt is just absolutely 110% all-in on getting that championship. So it's really become this even more fierce motorsport, versus perhaps in the past it was part show and part motorsports.

IN PREVIOUS INTERVIEWS WITH OTHER CHAMPIONS, PRETTY MUCH ALL OF THEM HAVE MENTIONED CONSISTENCY IN DRIVING PERFORMANCE AS WHAT ELEVATES YOU TO THAT TOP SPOT. YOU'VE BEEN WIDELY CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST CONSISTENT DRIVERS ON THAT GRID. IS THERE A SPECIFIC ASPECT OF YOUR GAME PLAN, OR MAYBE YOUR OFF SEASON PRACTICE THAT LENDS ITSELF TO CONSISTENT DRIVING? Sure, I guess there is. I've sometimes been consistent and maybe even careful - to the point where it's a little boring, and I've gotten a lot of feedback over the last couple years. Stepping into the new Supra, I've been more aggressive. People like certain traits or certain parts of how I drive in that car, and it's something that I'm aware of. Whereas other drivers - perhaps like Mad Mike, one of my close friends and a fantastic driver he's always said that he's there to put on the show first, and then compete second, which I think is way cooler. But I, for whatever reason, think the coolest feeling is trying to win. And by doing that, I understood what you said about being consistent and trying to understand

the black art that is drifting. We're being judged and they're scrutinizing everything they see. So it's all understanding what they're really looking for. And sometimes I think as a judge it’s even hard to convey what you are looking for. So we're trying to just go by what wins rounds. How are people driving? Where are they careful? Where are they aggressive? When is it called for to be aggressive and just trying to do that. It's not rocket science, it's just this never ending quest of trying to learn the game, you know?

SO WITH THAT SAID, IS THERE ANY MAJOR CHANGE TO YOUR CAR OR YOUR TEAM GOING IN THIS YEAR? No major changes. Some housekeeping stuff, as Steph likes to call it. Some bits and pieces for the motor program. We're working on reliability, we're trying to make the car a little more crashable - which

may sound weird, but we're trying to understand more of how to build these different crash structures in the front and rear of the car to where you can take harder impact without bending the rails - making the way the rear part of the body kit attaches so that when I do hit the wall, or scrape the wall, it's a quick fix. We're not as savvy or good with building those parts of the car compared to a lot of the other teams like the RTR guys and a lot of those S14/S13 cars. Whereas I think we're stronger when it comes to actual car set up. I think we've gotten quite strong when it comes to understanding gearing, jacking, dynamic suspension design, basically. Still lots to learn, don't get me wrong, but we're trying to get better at the things that we're not good at, but the car's gonna look very similar. And for better or worse, you know, I don't like to rest on our laurels per se, but at the same time, there's not a lot of things that we can really fine tune within the rule book and the design of the car.

car. The budget is out of the picture - it’s still there obviously, but it’s more about the skills of the driver than a million dollar budget-built car. Emotions and everything has kind of settled down a little bit. But to win two championships in a row, you have to live through it to say. Definitely realizing it’s historial, and kind of a bar set for somebody to try and beat it. I’m happy, obviously. It took a lot of work, a lot of effort from the right people on my team, a lot of coaching, and being humble, and agreeing with what people tell me. Especially Michael Essa was a huge part of my success. He’s telling me what to do and how to do it, and it works even though I think it doesn’t make any sense, and in the end it pays off.

THE FD CHANGE FROM PRO2 TO PROSPEC BROUGHT IN SOME RULE CHANGES REGARDING CAR SETUPS. DID YOU NOTICE ANY BIG DIFFERENCES ON THE TRACK BETWEEN OLD PRO2 AND NEW PROSPEC COMPETITION?

FIRST OF ALL, CONGRATS ON THE FORMULA DRIFT PROSPEC WIN LAST YEAR. A SECOND CONSECUTIVE WIN IN THE SERIES. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE NOW THAT IT’S OVER? The season is over, but the experience is not over. Big news: we’re going for the third championship. I had a couple of bigger sponsors approach me and said they wanted me to continue winning in Prospec, and I’m all for it. Like I said on the podium when I finished the 2021 season, I’ll drive whatever a sponsor is going to pay for. Until that point I paid out of pocket and I drove what I could afford. Now a few companies we teamed up with said we want you to keep working and bringing up the level of the Prospec field to where it’s interesting to watch. More competitive, and not like a feeder series anymore, but parallel with PRO1. It’s more about the driver than the

My car was still legal for last year because it had a dog-box. The biggest rule change was no sequentials. After driving the M3 E46 chassis we found the dog-box shifts really good. To see a change, I don’t think it’s because of those rules, but just the level of driving and drivers definitely growing. I think every year it’s getting better and better - the whole sport evolves. Drivers in our field learning from other drivers, from PRO1 guys - there’s a lot of PRO1-backed drivers in Prospec, and that definitely shows. It’s definitely growing not only on track but off track in the pits. I can say I’ve definitely noticed a big change and uprise in competition.

you can’t focus on anything else but that if you want to be successful. Therefore I would really need a lot more financial support to go do PRO1, but as of right now we’re looking pretty good for the 2022 Prospec series.

LAST TIME WE SPOKE, AFTER YOUR PRO2 WIN THE SEASON PRIOR, YOU MENTIONED THAT THE GRADUATION FROM PRO-AM TO PRO2 BROUGHT A NEW LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM AND INTENSITY TO YOUR PROGRAM. HOW DID YOU MAKE THE ADJUSTMENTS FOR LAST YEAR? We basically took everything from the previous year and tried to improve it, and see what worked and looked professional, and what didn’t work or didn’t look professional - try not to repeat the same mistakes. Whatever did worked and brought us success; we embrace it and follow that path.

ARE THERE ANY MAJOR CHANGES TO YOUR CAR OR TEAM STRUCTURE AS YOU MOVE INTO ANOTHER PROSPEC CHAMPIONSHIP? One of the keys to the success of my team is that I was pretty consistent with who’s on my team. From round to round, and from year to year, and that built us up as a team where we can

communicate and understand each other and everybody knows what they’re doing. So as a team, it’s going to be the same. Same spotters, same mechanics, same support and stuff like that. Maybe we’ll bring another one or two guys on, because we’re planning to have an actual awning and bigger trailer for setup and stuff like that. And bigger sponsors! We have to represent them well because they’re really stepping up and helping us this year. For the most part, just improving in the pits as a team, meeting and greeting fans, and getting them whatever we can give away like some free stuff. For the car, we have to switch to LINK. By the way, LINK is going to be one of my big sponsors for this year. Shoutout to LINK ECU. We’re switching to LINK and all of their electronics that can be put on the car. Next year if I decide to go again, we’ll have to change the pedals and steering column, or build another car - we have a couple options. Hopefully I don’t have to do that, and go battle my bigger competitors out there. I’m excited for this year because even at Prospec it’s a lot of work - it’s a lot of dedication, time, and money. Hopefully this year will open new doors and more support for the following year, and hopefully we’ll win another championship. Going PRO1 is going to be full time. Basically for eight months you’re away from your business and work, and

LASTLY, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAY TO THE FANS OUT THERE? What I want to say is there’s a lot of negative stuff, like people saying it’s boring when they watch the stream, or talking down on some drivers. That’s not cool because people sacrifice so much, they pay so much, they put everything else aside to go, and basically dedicate their time, their effort, and their finances to be there. Not everyone will meet your level of expectations, so if you have some negative comments, hold them back. Try to go and do better if you think you’re better, but just appreciate the sport itself, the show, and if you think the livestream is boring, spend a couple hundred dollars, buy a ticket, and come see in person. You’ll see it’s not boring at all. It’s way more fun to smell some rubber and see all these things in action. Just support. If you don’t like somebody, don’t follow them. Find a person you really like and support them. Check out their sponsors, their tags, because it helps as a driver. You never know, you might need something as simple as an air filter for your car - even if you’re not a car guy or girl. Follow people that you like and their sponsors. Every little bit helps, so you might as well buy from that company that supports your favorite drivers. I think more positivity than any negativity is what I want to see.

he 2022 Formula DRIFT season will take place at eight different race facilities throughout America over the course of eight months, but the action and entertainment will be available even more frequently than the events themselves. For the main events, all eight rounds will be covered on live stream events broadcasted around the world, which will give viewers worldwide the chance to get up close and personal with the Formula DRIFT circuit from the comfort of their own homes. In addition to the regular broadcasts, several hours of new digital content will be available throughout the season, available on Formula DRIFT's online outlets, including their website, as well as social media channels. If you miss an event, don’t sweat it! The Formula DRIFT live stream portal will feature archives from the entire season, available for replay almost immediately after the initial broadcast.
