n behalf of the entire Green Savoree Racing Promotions team, we’d like to welcome you to the 2022 Grand Prix of Portland!Twomajor headliners are in store for this weekend’s festivities. On Saturday, the ARCA Menards Series West stops at PIR for the second time this year. Points leader Jake Drew will be looking to repeat his June race win at the track. Then on Sunday, be here when the green flag drops on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES at 12:30 p.m. for some of the greatest racing in the world. With the championship on the line, the top five drivers in the season points standings Josef Newgarden, 2019 Portland winner Will Power, the second all-time winningest driver in INDYCAR history Scott Dixon, 2022 Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson, and last year’s race winner and series champion Alex Palou will battle it out on the very challenging Portland International Raceway. The Road to Indy ladder series will round out this fantastic race weekend. The future stars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES will be putting on a show. Champions will be crowned in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship and Indy Pro 2000 presented by Cooper Tires both featuring doubleheader races, while Indy Lights drivers continue to fight for the scholarship to move up to the big leagues. We thank every single one of them for their hard work and dedication to making this weekend one for the history books. We also like to extend our deep gratitude to our dedicated partners and sponsors for their support in helping make this spectacular weekend possible. Finally, a special thanks to the City of Portland, Portland Parks and Recreation, Friends of PIR, and the Portland International Raceway team for helping us put on a great show. Dear
The look of these cars is reminiscent of INDYCAR SERIES favorites of the 1980s and ‘90s, and driver skill is paramount as the low-downforce machines slip and slide on this challenging road course. Trust me when I say you will be able to see how hard the drivers must work to achieve maximum speed.
10 GRAND PRIX OF PORTLAND
12 GRAND PRIX OF PORTLAND nd those are the former champions still fighting for the Astor Challenge Cup in one of the most competitive seasons in series history. Mix in three drivers chasing their first claim to the Astor Chal lenge Cup -- Marcus Ericsson, the winner of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge; secondyear star Scott McLaughlin and ever-capable Pato O’Ward -- and the final push to the title could prove to be a slugfest. But the driver to watch might be the one most familiar to these pursuits.SinceJuly 1, a span of seven races, Dixon has scored the most points in the series, climbing from sixth in the standings to third place. He is within 14 points of Power heading to this weekend’s Grand Prix of Portland at Portland International Raceway. Dixon always seems to have another gear when it comes to this time of the year. Thirty-one of his 53 career wins have come after the calendar flips to July. The point, he is relentless to the finish. “I’ve been in many (champion ship) situations, and I think prob ably the biggest one that was like was with (Juan Pablo) Montoya (in 2015),” Dixon said. “I think (the series awarded) double points (in that year’s final race), but we were 60 points out of the lead, or some thing – maybe more. “That’s the point. You are never out of it until you are. (You) keep digging.” WILL POWER IS CLINGING TO THE NTT INDYCAR SERIES POINTS LEAD WITH TWO RACES REMAINING, AND SCOTT DIXON IS CHARGING TOWARD A RECORD-TYING SEVENTH SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP. JOSEF NEWGARDEN REMAINS A THREAT TO SCORE HIS THIRD SEASON TITLE, AND ALEX PALOU HASN’T WAVERED IN HIS BID TO REPEAT AS THE SERIES CHAMPION.

Here is what Dixon and the other title contenders must dig through the rest of the way: While the battle is tightest among the top four – Power, Newgarden, Dixon and Ericsson are separated by just 17 points –Palou is just 43 points in arrears. Next to Dixon, McLaughlin has been the summer’s hottest driver, posting five top-four finishes in the past seven races, including the July 3 win at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Dixon has won two of the past seven races, in Toronto and Nashville, and he is a former race winner at World Wide Technology Raceway. After this weekend, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES concludes its season and West Coast swing with the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Sept. 11. the point. Few drivers had to adapt more quickly to disappointment this season than McElrea. He crashed out of the lead after starting from the pole in the season-opening race in February in his Indy Lights debut. McElrea admits it took awhile to recover and adapt from that disappointment.“AfterIcrashed at St. Pete I was pretty upset, obviously,” McElrea said. “And then I was trying to force it a bit much, and when you're driving trying to force a result, it usually doesn't end up that well. You kind of drive pushing and thinking because you feel like you have to win rather than just wanting to win. It's two different things.” So, McElrea adapted a new mindset before his victory at Mid-Ohio. And the results –winning back-to-back poles and races at Mid-Ohio and Iowa -speak for themselves. “When I kind of put that to the side and went back to just trying to enjoy it and letting everything
cElrea, 22, enters the final three races of the season with wins on the natural road course at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and on a short oval at Iowa Speedway in Andretti Autosport’s No. 27 car. The July hot streak has lifted him to lead the rookie of the year standings in Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires. This is McElrea’s first season in Indy Lights after finishing third last season in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. Many of the drivers he is racing against are in their second season in Indy Lights, which is an advantage. “(Belle Isle) was a new track for me and all the other rookies in the field versus Sting Ray (Robb) and Linus (Lundqvist) and guys who are in their second or third year,” McElrea said.

And McElrea is confident that this adaptation and continued work effort will pay off this weekend.“It’sgoing to be, for sure, a big learning curve but a big learning curve for everyone,” McElrea said. “I have a really good team around me, and I'm really confident and in what they're going to supply us and how we can work together with them and my teammates to hopefully get a head start over the rest of the field.” The New Zealand-American also is keeping his eye on a fu ture driving in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. If he finishes in the top three in the championship he’ll earn an invite to the NTT INDY CAR SERIES Combine Test, where he’ll get a test in an INDYCAR SERIES car. “For me, it's been a dream come true,” McElrea said. “I finished second and third in both the Road to Indy championships before this. I won championships in my career before, but to win Indy Lights, the last championship in the junior categories on my journey to INDYCAR, would definitely be the cherry on top of my whole junior career. “You know, it's everything I've worked for,” McElrea said. “To be here and to win that championship would just be everything. One-hundred percent pushing for that always, like everyone else is in the field, and to be in the position I'm in is still going to be a big push to claw back that deficit. But it's a good feeling to be up and second in the points in this really good second half of the year so far.” “...but to win Indy definitelyINDYCAR,championshiptheLights, lastinthejuniorcategoriesonmyjourneytowouldbethecherryontopofmywholejuniorcareer.”

Foster also emerged on top in his oval debut at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in May before adding more wins on the road courses at Road America and Mid-Ohio and the demand ing Toronto street course. He now needs merely to start each of the three races and claim just one fin ish of 11th or better to put the title beyond the reach of his rivals.

Foster, who hails from Basingstoke, England, but is now based in Los Angeles, Calif., gained extensive open-wheel experience in Europe before resetting his career goals this year toward a future in North America. The 2017 British Formula 3 champion posted a particularly impressive drive at Road America, where he stormed from last on the grid to fourth.Braden Eves (Jay Howard Driver Development), from New Albany, Ohio, and Josh Green (Turn 3 Motorsport), from Mount Kisco, N.Y., have won one race apiece and remain in the mix at least for the runner-up position in the Mexicanchampionship.rookieSalvador De Alba also has impressed in a second Jay Howard-run Tatuus PM-22. Despite his previous ex perience having been limited al most exclusively to heavy stock cars, competing in the NASCAR Peak Mexico series, De Alba gained a first open-wheel win after teammate Eves’ car failed post-race technical inspection at Indianapolis, and recently backed up that performance with a dominant victory in the VP Racing Fuels Oval Challenge of St. Louis at WWT Raceway. There is plenty on the line for drivers on the middle rung of the Road to Indy ladder and all will be decided this weekend. 26 GRAND PRIX OF PORTLAND
A ROWE HOLDS
nother slice of history could unfold this weekend with Myles Rowe poised to become the first Black driver to win a championship on the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires. Rowe, 22, from New York, N.Y. currently holds a 23-point advantage over his closest rival, Michael d’Orlando, 20, from Hartsdale, N.Y., in the battle for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship and a scholarship valued at $406,925 to ensure graduation onto the next step of the Road to Indy open-wheel development ladder, the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, in 2023. Rowe’s Pabst Racing teammate, Jace Denmark, from Scottsdale, Ariz., also remains firmly in the title contest, just three points behind d’Orlando who is seeking to become the 10th Cape Motorsports driver to win the championship in the past 12 years. The top three protagonists have waged a tremendous season-long battle for the top spot. It all began on the streets of St, Petersburg, Fla., in February when Denmark emerged on top following a last-lap clash between Rowe and young Canadian Thomas Nepveu, who had led all the way after starting on the pole position for defending champion team DEForce Racing. Rowe rebounded to take victory the following day, despite having started only sixth on the grid, and then truly marked himself as a bona fide title contender by winning the first of two races at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.Rowe, who earned his first Road to Indy race win last year at New Jersey Motorsports Park,
D’Orlando, who made his USF2000 debut in 2018 and now holds the records for most series starts in the Road to Indy era (59), as well as topfive (37) and top-10 (43) finishes, has taken a season high five poles to add to his three wins. He entered the season as the favorite for top honors after finishing second in the 2021 title-chase and, like Rowe, knows he needs to win the crown in order to guarantee progression onto the next step of the ladder. And then there’s Denmark, who has crept stealthily into the picture. The youngest of the title contenders at just 18, Denmark also is on a roll, winning the most recent race on the streets of To ronto, Canada, and riding his own streak of five podium finishes. It is an intriguing battle. Adding a little more spice to the mix, Pabst Racing is still seeking its elusive first drivers’ champi onship. It is perfectly positioned to do so, although juggling the desires of not one but two hungry young chargers has historically proven difficult. In that same vein, third-generation racer Jagger Jones, grandson of 1963 Indy 500 winner Parnelli, also seeks to end his rookie season on a high. Jones drives for Cape Motors ports and has pushed teammate d’Orlando to the limit on several occasions already this year. Jones has all but wrapped up the Rookie of the Year honors over yet an other Cape driver, Nicky Hays, but he still has designs on adding to his first victory in Alabama. The pressure is on. Thick in the championship battle, Michael d’Orlando trails Rowe by only 23 points with a tripleheader race weekend on deck at Portland.
Jace Denmark sits third in the points and is also in the championship mix.
With the success of Rowe and Denmark this season, Pabst Racing is poised to claim its first drivers’ championship.
28 GRAND PRIX OF PORTLAND competing as a rookie for the new Black-owned Force Indy team, had begun his sophomore season with guaranteed funding only for the first few races, but his blistering form soon convinced his primary benefactor, Penske Entertainment, to continue its support. He has repaid the faith in style, emerging with a new-found consistency as he rides a streak of 10 top-six finishes, including three more wins, into this weekend’s Cooper Tires Grand Prix of Portland season finale. But Rowe fully understands the job is not done.
