Dear Honda Race Fan, Welcome to another action-packed weekend of racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, highlighted by Sunday’s Honda Indy 200, featuring the cars and drivers of the NTT IndyCar Series. This weekend’s race will feature many of the most talented racers from around the world – and manufacturer competition from Honda and Chevrolet – fighting for both race victories and the series championship. So far this season, Honda has won four of nine races as the company seeks to repeat as INDYCAR Manufacturers’ Champion in 2019, and holds a 59-point lead over rival Chevrolet. Honda-powered drivers to watch this weekend include Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach race winner Alexander Rossi; defending series champion and four-time Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon; local favorite and 2015 Mid-Ohio winner Graham Rahal; former series and Indianapolis 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay; the popular James Hinchcliffe; rising young stars Colton Herta and Santino Ferrucci; and native Ohioan Zach Veach. Since 1994, Honda has been synonymous with success in Indy car racing. For the past 25 years, no other manufacturer has won as many races and championships in both Championship Auto Racing Teams and IndyCar competition. In CART, Honda won four manufacturers’ championships in a nineyear period against competition from Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. In IndyCar, Honda has won two Manufacturers’ Championships and an unmatched 12 Indianapolis 500s since 2004. We hope you enjoy the races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, one of the most beautiful road racing facilities in North America, where American Honda has had a relationship that dates to 1994. Have a great weekend!

WELCOME LETTERS
Dear INDYCAR fans: Welcome to the Honda Indy 200 race weekend at the iconic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, one of the most popular stops on INDYCAR’s NTT IndyCar Series schedule. We are committed to providing a great fan experience this weekend through outstanding entertainment, competition and value. Sunday’s main event is Round 13 of a challenging 17-race NTT IndyCar Series schedule in 2019 – one widely regarded as the most diverse and demanding in all of motorsports. In addition to historic permanent road courses the likes of MidOhio, Portland International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the series also makes stops at tight, urban street circuits in St. Petersburg, Long Beach, Detroit and Toronto, as well as traditional Indy car ovals including Texas Motor Speedway, Iowa Speedway and World Wide Technology Raceway (formerly known as Gateway Motorsports Park). The annual centerpiece of the schedule is the Indianapolis 500, whose 103rd running in May produced the first French citizen to win the 500 since 1914 when Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud held off Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in dramatic fashion. Just as with Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is steeped in Indy car history. This weekend marks the 35th time that the open-wheel, open-cockpit machines will roar around the 2.258-mile course, dating to the first race in 1980 won by legendary Johnny Rutherford. Over the years, some of the greatest names in the sport have won at Mid-Ohio, including Ohio natives Bobby Rahal and his son Graham, Mario and Michael Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Al Unser Jr., Alex Zanardi, Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon. The racing heritage is as deep and impressive as the twisting, undulating Mid-Ohio circuit. Whether you’re a veteran fan who has watched many of the greats race here before or are visiting Mid-Ohio for the first time, we’re excited for you to witness the incredible non-stop action. Alexander Rossi will defend his 2018 victory this weekend, but must fend off the likes of five-time Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon, hometown favorite Graham Rahal, and fellow Indy 500 winners Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Tony Kanaan and Takuma Sato to do so. Dixon also is a former 500 winner. This year’s race marks the return of the sleek Indy car that debuted in 2018. The Dallara IR-12 chassis is adorned this season with the universal aero kit for all entries that features a fast and sexy look reminiscent of favored Indy cars from the 1980s and ‘90s. The aero kit – tested for the first time on a road course at Mid-Ohio – produces less downforce than the previous generation, making it tougher to drive. Watch as the cars roar through the corners this weekend; you should notice them sliding more as the drivers work harder in the cockpit to keep them under control while pushing them to the limit. You will also be able to see the NTT IndyCar Series stars of tomorrow in competition as all three rungs of the Road to Indy developmental ladder sanctioned by INDYCAR – Indy Lights, Indy Pro 2000 and USF2000 – are in action. All told, the three support series will stage six races this weekend, so each day is jam-packed with on-track excitement. While here, we invite you to tour the interactive INDYCAR Fan Village and sign up for INDYCAR Nation, the official fan community for all things INDYCAR. Complete your weekend experience with an autograph and/or photo with an accessible INDYCAR driver. And don’t forget to download the INDYCAR Mobile app on your smartphone to get behind-the-scenes features to help you follow the race, and follow the NTT IndyCar Series online at IndyCar.com, on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (@IndyCar). Thank you for your continued support. INDYCAR truly appreciates your attendance. We’re glad you can experience the speed, action and excitement that define the NTT IndyCar Series. Enjoy the weekend! COLTON HERTA Young Honda driver Colton Herta has been one of the biggest stories of the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season. The son of former Ohio racer Bryan Herta, Colton became the youngest driver ever to score an IndyCar Series victory when he won the March 24 INDYCAR Classic at Circuit of the Americas, just two weeks prior to his 19th birthday. BY BRUCE MARTIN

ess than three months later, Herta also became the youngest pole winner in IndyCar history, when he took his Harding Steinbrenner Racing Honda to the fastest qualifier time at Road America. Next up is a trip to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the Honda Indy 200 at MidOhio, a track where his father experienced some of his early racing successes in both the Indy Lights Series and CART in the 1990s. “He [Bryan] has a lot of fans there and in turn, I

have a lot of fans from growing up and racing around there in USF2000 and Indy Lights,” Colton said. “I feel at home here [at Mid-Ohio]. I love the track and I love the place. It’s my favorite track in the United States. I enjoy going there. It seems like we are going to have even softer tires than last year and it will be even faster and I’m looking forward to that.” Young Herta loves the speed and the challenge that MidOhio presents to a driver. “It’s busy through the back

Bryan Herta The Ohio roots run deep in the Herta family. For NTT IndyCar Series team owner Bryan Herta, a trip to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio means a return to the Buckeye State, where his professional racing career got its start. Herta began his racing career driving for Ohiobased teams, such as Tasman Motorsports in Indy Lights, and later for Team Rahal when it was based in Hilliard. “I did run a lot of laps around Mid-Ohio, and for many, many years, it was a home track,” Herta explained. “In many ways, it feels like a homecoming. In all honesty, it’s nice because I get to see a lot of old friends, but they are all important races. I don’t come in thinking this one is more important to do well because they are all important to do well. It’s a track I like to go back to because I enjoyed racing on it when I was younger.” Today, Herta is a co-owner of the No. 98 Andretti Autosports Honda driven by Marco Andretti. He is also a two-time Indianapolis 500 winning team owner. The first was in 2011, when the late Dan Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500. Five years later, it was thenrookie driver Alexander Rossi winning the 100th Indianapolis 500 in 2016. Back when Herta’s career started as a driver, Ohio played a major role in his career and his life. “I lived in Ohio for the better part of six or seven years,” Herta explained. “We made a life there. My daughter was born there. From a personal standpoint, I have an

section and down Thunder Valley,” Herta explained. “There’s a good combination of high-speed corners and some low-speed corners. It’s a really fast track with the ability to pass as well, and that is very rare. My father has done well there. He got the pole there at least once in CART. I know he was leading one year and had a tire failure.” “The family connection is really big, because a lot of my dad’s fans love the fact he drove for Bobby Rahal. He also

went to Ohio State, and he lived in Ohio during his early IndyCar career. A lot of people connect with that and in turn, he gets a lot of love there. I love going there. He is a fan favorite and it’s awesome to see.” Colton is driving a Honda for Harding Steinbrenner Racing for 2019, while father Bryan is co-team owner of Marco Andretti’s No. 98 Honda at Andretti Autosport. In addition, HSR shares an engineering agreement with Andretti through its Andretti Technolo-
gies subsidiary. “Andretti Technologies does a ton for this team,” Colton said. “The cars are fast because the series is so competitive. You need a fast driver and a fast car. I’ve gotten a fast car everywhere I’ve gone. We’ve been so fast everywhere and have had a really good car. I attribute a lot of success this year to the car and to the guys.” Herta’s father is in charge of the race strategy for Marco Andretti, but remains full of support and
advice for his son at Harding Steinbrenner. “Colton grew up around this,” Bryan said. “That is part of why he has been able to transition so easily - because he has been in this environment, this paddock, really his whole life. He came to the Long Beach Grand Prix when he was just two weeks old. He has been coming to races since he’s been alive. Colton is doing a fantastic job. Harding Steinbrenner is giving him fantastic cars. I don’t see any reason why they

affinity for the area. When we used to race in Cleveland and Mid-Ohio, we did a lot of racing in and around that area. I feel like there are a lot of great IndyCar fans there and that raises the event when you have really, died-in-the-wool IndyCar fans coming out like we do at Mid-Ohio, that makes things that much better.” Although he was born in Warren, Michigan and his father attended the University of Michigan, Herta chose The Ohio State University where he majored in economics. “I went to Ohio State, and majored in economics. I was born in Michigan and my dad went to Michigan,” Herta said. “Definitely, when Michigan plays Ohio State, I’m rooting for the Scarlet and Gray.” Although Herta fell just short of getting his degree from Ohio State, his college years have had a lasting impact on his career as both a race driver and later as an NTT IndyCar Series team owner. “There is a discipline to learning that benefits you, no matter what you do,” Herta explained. “Whether you use your degree or not, there is a discipline to learning how to study, how to apply yourself, how to meet deadlines for tests, how to meet deadlines for projects. All of that is the same in any business venture. I think the educational experience really helped me a lot on the business side of racing, even though the particular subject I studied wasn’t directly related to racing.” While at Ohio State, Herta started
third and finished fourth in the Indy Lights Series race at Mid-Ohio in 1992. The next year, Herta won the Lights race at Mid-Ohio, starting from the pole for Tasman Motorsports. From there, Herta moved up to Indy cars, first as a test driver at Newman Haas Racing, then racing for AJ Foyt in 1994. The following year, he moved to Chip Ganassi Racing. He won his first pole at Phoenix in 1995, finished second at Cleveland and fifth at Mid-Ohio. In 1996, Ohio-based Team Rahal hired Herta to drive the Shell car in CART. He finished fourth at Mid-Ohio that year and drove into Victory Lane at Laguna Seca in 1998 for his first career CART win. It was the first of two-straight wins for Herta at Laguna Seca. He joined team owner Michael Andretti’s IndyCar team in 2003 and scored a victory at Kansas Speedway that year and Michigan International Speedway in 2005 when he won from the pole. Time has moved on and Herta is now more famous as the father of 19-year-old rookie driver Colton. But his returns to Ohio bring back special memories to the man and his family. “Ohioans still have the Rahal home team to root for and maybe a little bit, the Herta’s, too, because we did spend time there,” Herta recalled. “Even though we live in California now, it was our home for many years and we still feel a great fondness towards the area. I’m humbled to be claimed as a hometown guy.”

“To be a professional race car driver and this is the way you get to earn a living, is pretty darn cool...” shouldn’t go there and be competitive at Mid-Ohio.” Bryan Herta was one of Colton’s heroes as an IndyCar Series driver, for obvious reasons. But Colton also had three other drivers that he put into the “hero” category. “I had three heroes not including my Dad. My Dad was one, but when he was driving for Andretti it was Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti and Dan Wheldon. They were spectacular in that era, too. They dominated from 2004 to 2007. They were my heroes. They were the fastest guys and the guys winning

the most, for sure. When I was young, I used to go to every race up until about third grade. I loved it. Now, it does get a little tiring when you have the back-to-back races. Indy was tough because I didn’t get home for two months. Every time you get to the race weekend, it’s worth it because I just love to drive.” Herta has been able to successfully follow his father’s career path to become an NTT IndyCar Series driver. He has all the promise and potential to become a star. “To be a professional race car
driver and this is the way you get to earn a living, is pretty darn cool,” Colton said. “I always step back after a frustrating day and remember that I get to earn a living by driving a race car.” As a Herta, however, there is this college football game played every November that pits the famed Ohio State Buckeyes against “that school up North” as former coach Woody Hayes used to call the University of Michigan. At times, it has become a Herta Family Battle because Bryan attended Ohio State and Colton’s grandfather [Bryan’s father] went to Michi-
gan. “They are so against each other,” Colton said. “They are always placing bets on all the different football and basketball games. Whenever there is a game, he is cheering for Ohio State. I don’t really care who wins, it’s just whoever I want to wind up more that day – my dad or my grandfather. “My girlfriend goes to Southern California, so I have to be a big USC fan for her. But I only care about racing.”

MEYER SHANK RACING AT M I D - O HI O
With the team being based just 50 miles away, and decades of hard-earned highlights at the track, Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course have become synonymous through the years. This weekend the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio marks Meyer Shank Racing’s second NTT IndyCar Series outing at its home track. BY SUNDAY MANAGEMENT GROUP / PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEYER SHANK RACING
m
eyer Shank Racing’s IndyCar program has shown significant growth over the past year, with an expanded race schedule for 2019 which sees Jack Harvey taking the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda to 10 rounds of IndyCar competition. The Mid-Ohio round will be the eighth IndyCar race of 2019 for Harvey and Meyer Shank Racing as the team aims to continue its progress. The season got off to a fast start for the team, with a run to seventh place in qualifying and a top 10 finish at the opening round in St. Petersburg. Harvey followed that up with another top ten finish at Circuit of the Americas. But the highlight was yet to come for Meyer Shank Racing. Kicking off a big month of May, the team entered its first Indianapolis Grand Prix, a track
that Harvey has had tremendous success at in Indy Lights competition. That experience translated well into IndyCar, as Harvey started and finished third at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to mark the first IndyCar podium finish for MSR at only its 11th IndyCar outing. With a strong start to the season the team hopes to impress not only in front of its home crowd, but also at the site that holds so much history for Meyer Shank Racing and team owner Mike Shank.
Having gone from racer to team owner, Shank built his business from the support of several Columbus area companies. Roberts Service Group, Rocky Fork Co., and CAP Fixtures have been a part of the team’s growth for nearly a decade. Along with the team’s growing partnerships with AutoNation and SiriusXM, MSR has prioritized supporting locally. “It’s really important to me to help out locally,” said Mike Shank. “Many of our sponsors

have been with us since the very beginning and have stuck by us even when times got tough. Over the last few years, they have all really stepped up to get this IndyCar program up and running. I am forever grateful for what they have done and it’s my mission to give them the same benefits in return.” The journey at Mid-Ohio began when Shank was just five years old, attending races as a fan with his father. It didn’t take long for Shank to get behind the wheel at his home

track, taking his first laps right after high school. Shank – ran one IndyCar race in 1997 in Las Vegas - went from racer to team owner building a small Atlantics team of crew guys, some of which still work with the team today. A big highlight in the team’s open wheel career was a pole and victory in the Atlantics Series at Mid-Ohio with driver Kenny Wilden in 1999. “Mike (Shank) and I met in 1997 which is when we planned to go Atlantics racing
in 1998,” said Wilden. “In 1999 we finished second in the championship and I was working with Dale Wise and Darin Pigg [who are still with MSR today]. Mid-Ohio is one of my favorite tracks of all time and it was a special race with it also being Mike’s home track. We had a great car that weekend and I was so happy to get the win for him. Mike was probably the best team owner that I have ever worked with, and I think that was because he was also a racer at heart.”
With nearly two decades as team owner under his belt, Mid-Ohio has since been a staple on the team’s schedule for its sports car program. From 2004-2013 MSR competed in the IMSA Grand-Am series in Daytona Prototype competition. The team saw the likes of Ozz Negri, Paul Mears Jr., Michael Valiente, Zak Brown and John Pew drive for Shank at Mid-Ohio – just a few of the 22 different drivers that ran with the team. One of the original Meyer

Shank Racing employees, Dale Wise, is a backbone to the organization and still plays a role as lead engineer on the sports car side. “Things have really changed since we ran Atlantics back in the day,” said Wise. “We had a very small team of maybe 7-10 guys for two Atlantics cars. I had met Mike when he rented space in my shop to prep his cars and as he became busier, I started working with him more and before you know it, I was full time working with Mike.
Back then we just had two dually trucks with a fifth wheel and went to races. Its amazing how things have changed especially with data systems. There just wasn’t much out there to process data, but now we can really analyze everything with a lot of detail.” After the merger of the ALMS and GRAND-AM series, there would be a four year hiatus before MSR returned to MidOhio in 2018. Coming back with the all new Acura NSX GT3 in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar

competition, the GT-Daytona class was all new territory for the Columbus-area team. MSR immediately saw success at Mid-Ohio with Katherine Legge and Alvaro Parente scoring a second place finish during the Acura Sports Car Challenge in 2018. Just two months later, Shank would see a life-long dream come true as his team made its first NTT IndyCar Series entry at Mid-Ohio. This goal dated back to even before 2011, when Shank was at MidOhio with the GRAND-AM series and placed in his order for a Dallara DW12 chassis right from the confines of the Mid-Ohio media center. After a successful application, the team took delivery of the chassis at the shop based just outside of Columbus later that year but the dreams of running in IndyCar were quickly stripped as Shank was unable to obtain a competitive engine. Seven years later in 2018, MSR made its IndyCar Mid-

“Since 1975 or 1976, I’ve been going to Mid-Ohio and from the first time I saw IndyCar racing there as a kid, I was trying to figure out a way to compete at Mid-Ohio in an Indy Car” Ohio debut with Jack Harvey in the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda. “Since 1975 or 1976, I’ve been going to Mid-Ohio and from the first time I saw IndyCar racing there as a kid, I was trying to figure out a way to compete at Mid-Ohio in an Indy Car,” Shank told RACER. “It didn’t work out for me with driving but owning a team and being part of it that way means a lot. If you think about the arc of a career, this is pretty
special.” To this day Meyer Shank Racing has had 23 race entries at Mid-Ohio since 2004. The team has claimed three second place finishes and three top five finishes. With the sought-after victory in sight, MSR is hoping to collect that first win in front of its home crowd. “What Mid-Ohio means to our team doesn’t need a big introduction,” said Harvey. “It’s one of those races that we circle on the schedule every year to really do a good
job at in front of Mike’s home crowd. We go into the weekend as we do any other, but there is definitely that bit of added pressure to have a good result. It’s been our goal to qualify in the top 12 and finish in the top ten and I hope that I can do that front of his friends and family. That’s what we are always looking to achieve, Mid-Ohio is just a little more special.”

hen Scott Dixon looks back upon his fifth NTT IndyCar Series championship, what comes to mind first about the 2018 season is how he emerged from a cloud of dust in the nextto-last race with an epiphany. The 38-year-old New Zealander remembers fearing the worst when caught up in a first-lap mishap in Turn 3 of the Grand Prix of Portland on Sept. 2. Four other cars, including Marco Andretti’s flipping over two, were basically knocked out of the race. But Dixon’s No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda emerged relatively unscathed, and still running. He stayed on the lead lap and surged back to finish in fifth place and actually widen his points lead by three over Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi. Then, by finishing a conservative second in the season finale, the INDYCAR Grand Prix of Sonoma, Dixon secured championship No. 5, leaving him behind only the great A.J. Foyt for the most in Indy car history (seven). In a legendary career where Dixon remembers too well the close calls of championships lost when on the other side of that scenario, his Portland premonition proved prophetic.
“I’ve been in so many championships and lost in a ton of them that you kind of get the sense when somebody is going to win it, just because things like that happen,” Dixon said. “When I drove out of that (at Portland), I was like, ‘I think we’re going to win this thing.’” He distinctly recalls how instinct took over and he was able to keep his car running.
“Luckily, I pulled the clutch,” Dixon said. “Sometimes, it’s just second nature, you just do it automatically. In that situation, it’s just one of those things I did. In hindsight, too, they (the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team members on the scene) weren’t going to start me at any point. They were still tending to people who had crashed a little harder. So I would have gone several laps down, too, if the engine wasn’t running. “For one of the safety guys to see me kind of yelling, ‘Move the truck!’ – he had to back the truck up and I was able to pull away, then I was able to stay on the lead lap – the writing was on the wall. Internally, I was like, ‘This is a really good sign.’” When Rossi saw a replay of the melee, he shook his head in disbelief. “(Rossi) had the same conversation with me after the race: ‘I can’t believe you got out of that,’” Dixon said with a smile. His uncanny ability to overcome adversity summed
up a determined drive to the championship. “Maybe we weren’t the quickest in all the places,” Dixon said, “but it was just going to be the championship that we fought through and ended up capturing.” There were other pivotal moments when Dixon was in a bad way, yet bounced back. He had only one top-five finish in his first four starts and sat seventh in points, then qualified 18th for the INDYCAR Grand Prix on May 12 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. “The craziest race for me was the INDYCAR Grand Prix,” he said. “We started from near the back and finished second. We almost drove through the entire field. That was a rocket ship. That was like a win.” After a “blah” Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil, where he spent most of the day between fifth and eighth place but salvaged third in the double-points race, Dixon was steadily climbing back toward the front. He won the next race, the first of two weekend races at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, a 42nd career triumph that tied Michael Andretti for third on the all-time list. Combined with a third-place run the following day, Dixon was suddenly in second place in the points, just five behind Will Power of Team Penske.

“It was really cool to have (wife) Emma, (daughters) Poppy and Tilly, the whole family together for the last race. They will never forget that. That was the best part for me.” Dixon led the last 119 laps to win the next race, the DXC Technology 600 at Texas Motor Speedway. He not only passed Andretti for career wins with his third victory at the track, he seized a championship lead that wouldn’t be relinquished through the second half of the season. “Texas was just domination for us. The car was so hooked up for us. It’s always nice to shoot some guns there,” Dixon said, alluding to the track tradition of having the race winner fire six-shooters filled with blanks in victory lane. Another key moment came in July at the Honda Indy Toronto, where defending series champion Josef Newgarden of Team Penske won the pole but brushed the wall on an early
32

restart. Dixon, who had qualified second, seized the opportunity to win his third race in six starts. He had a 62-point lead on Newgarden, who finished the race in ninth. “Had he won that race, he would have been a closer title contender,” Dixon said of
Newgarden. “Obviously for us and the back half of the season, that was a big change.” In the season’s final five races, the “Ice Man” always lurked near the front. All were top-five finishes. The season finale was a double-points Sonoma showdown with Rossi.
Dixon finished second to wind up 57 points ahead of Rossi, who was seventh in the race. “It was really cool to have (wife) Emma, (daughters) Poppy and Tilly, the whole family together for the last race,” Dixon said of the postrace celebration. “It’s the first time we had ever done that for the championship. They will never forget that. That was the best part for me.” Knowing that the fifth career series title pushed him ahead of Mario Andretti, Sebastien Bourdais and close friend Dario Franchitti on the all-time list, leaving him behind only Foyt, Dixon sensed his latest milestone seemed to take on more public significance. “Going from four to five, maybe in the media mindset, it was a big shift,” he said. “I think four was still quite an achievement, but five, it seems to have changed the noise a little bit. And to be the second person to ever do that outside of A.J., that’s pretty cool, right? “We chase victories and over this period of time, to finally get to this point where you’re starting to knock on the door of some pretty big things, it’s really cool to reflect on that. Now it’s all about No. 6.”

SEASON TO DATE
INDYCAR CLASSIC MARCH 24
The competition continues to get tighter and more exciting in the NTT IndyCar Series. Through the first half of the 2019 season, no fewer than six different drivers have reached victory lane – setting up what should be another thrilling Honda Indy 200, not to mention the rest of the season. Here is a recap of the season to date through the Honda Indy Toronto on July 12. FIRESTONE GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG
MARCH 10
When Josef Newgarden ran longer, harder and faster in a middle stint of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, it paid off with victory at the end. Newgarden kicked off the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season victorious by 2.8998 seconds over reigning series champion Scott Dixon. It was the 11th triumph of Newgarden’s eight-year career but first on

History was made in more than one way at Circuit of The Americas this weekend. In addition to the INDYCAR Classic bring the first NTT IndyCar Series race at the renowned track in Austin, Texas, Colton Herta became the youngest driver to win an Indy car event. The beneficiary of an opportune full-course caution period, Herta led the final 15 laps and won by 2.7182 seconds over Josef Newgarden. At 18 years, 359 days old, the secondgeneration driver became the
the 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary street course that incorporates a runway of Albert Whitted Airport. “I feel like we executed today,” Newgarden said. “We were very patient in the beginning of the race. We had a different tire strategy again today, and it really paid off. I actually think it’s what helped us create the opportunity.”
The win by Newgarden extended Team Penske’s run of success at St. Petersburg to nine victories in the event’s 16-race history. It was also the 204th win all time by the Indy car team, most in the sport, and returned Chevrolet atop the podium after the engine supplier went winless on temporary street circuits last season.
youngest to win an Indy car race, breaking the mark previously held by Graham Rahal, who was 19 years, 93 days when he won at St. Petersburg in 2008. The race was just the third in the NTT IndyCar Series for Herta, who finished second in the 2018 Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires championship before moving up to Harding Steinbrenner Racing this year. Herta was humbled to join the list of Indy car race winners that includes his father, Bryan, who had four victories in a 12-year Indy car career and is now co-owner and race strategist for the car driven by Marco Andretti. “Just to be up with the names of people that have won (a) race, I’m going to live and die an Indy car winner, which is spectacular in itself,” Herta said. “Yeah, it’s a great record at a young age. To be standing up here kind of feels surreal. “We were not expecting (to win). I think we were going to get a podium (top-three finish) – I think we had the pace for that – but holy crap, man! … It’s spectacular!”

HONDA INDY GRAND PRIX OF ALABAMA APRIL 7
Takuma Sato drove flawlessly – almost – to win the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by AmFirst and throw his name firmly into the NTT IndyCar Series championship conversation. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver made Scott Dixon a Barber Motorsports Park bridesmaid for a record sixth time, beating the reigning series champion to the finish line by 2.3874 seconds. It was the fourth win of Sato’s 10year NTT IndyCar Series career, with the 42-year-old from Tokyo becoming the third different driver – each from a different team – to pull into victory lane in three races this season. “This is because of the team, they did a fantastic effort,” Sato said. “My car was superb!
“It’s probably the cleanest race I ever won. ... I think we come here with the hopes, always do, but honestly never really, really expected to be this much of a domination.” Starting from pole position after winning the NTT P1 Award the day before, Sato led 74 of 90 laps on the 17-turn, 2.3-mile permanent road course that hosted the NTT IndyCar Series for a 10th straight year.
ACURA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH APRIL 14
Al Unser Jr. may be “King of the Beach,” but Alexander Rossi is driving toward INDYCAR racing royalty at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. For the second straight year on the iconic NTT IndyCar Series street course, Rossi dominated the competition. The Andretti Autosport driver led all but five of 85 laps from the pole position to become the first back-to-back winner at Long Beach since Sebastien Bourdais won three in a row from 2005-07. “We were able to get a race car I was really happy with,” Rossi said. “Winning the pole is huge come Sunday because it allows you to hopefully be in front leaving Turn 1 and
really just control the race from there.” Driving the No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda, Rossi cruised across the finish line 20.2359 seconds ahead of Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden – the largest margin of victory at Long Beach since Unser Jr. captured one of his record six Long Beach victories by more than 23 seconds in 1995. Four of Rossi’s six NTT IndyCar Series career victories have now come when the 27-year-old Californian started from the pole position. The win also moved him into second place in the 2019 championship standings after four of 17 races, trailing Newgarden by 28 points.

INDYCAR GRAND PRIX
103RD INDIANAPOLIS 500 PRESENTED BY GAINBRIDGE
MAY 11
Simon Pagenaud overcame the elements and the competition to win the INDYCAR Grand Prix in thrilling fashion. Pagenaud passed five-time NTT IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon for the lead on the next-to-last lap on a rain-soaked Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and pulled away to collect the 12th victory of his Indy car career. “What a way to start May!” said Pagenaud, who won his third INDYCAR Grand Prix by 2.0469 seconds. “The car was fantastic; the car was awesome all day. We had something for everybody.” Starting eighth in the 85-lap race that ran from start to finish in varying levels of rain, Pagenaud charged from sixth place in the final 18 laps in treacherous conditions to collect his first win since the 2017 season finale. When Dixon, the reigning series champion, slid a little wide exiting Turn 7 on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn circuit, Pagenaud dove his No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet inside Dixon’s No.
MAY 26
9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. The two cars made light side-to-side contact in the series of corners before Pagenaud exited Turn 9 in front. “It was a matter of being in the right position,” Pagenaud said. “I pushed all race. When the rain came, I wasn’t sure it was going to work. Surprisingly, it was just the best out there. When Dixon was really struggling with his tires, you could see that. “I was just braking as deep as I could to catch him. I wasn’t really planning on passing him there. He made a slight mistake.”
Simon Pagenaud completed his May mission with the biggest win of his racing life, capturing the 103rd Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in a duel for the ages and extending Team Penske’s dominance at “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Pagenaud edged Alexander Rossi by 0.2086 of a second following a thrilling clash over the final 14 laps on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval that had the crowd at the world’s largest single-day sporting event on its feet and screaming with excitement. It was the seventh-closest finish
in Indianapolis 500 history. “It’s amazing. It’s another dream come true, and the biggest dream of my life come true,” said Pagenaud, a 35-year-old native of Montmorillon, France. “It’s hard to fathom, really. It’s really hard to process it right now, but I’m just filled with a lot of joy.” Pagenaud and Rossi swapped the lead five times in the closing laps, the last when Pagenaud roared his bright yellow No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet outside of and past Rossi’s No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda heading into Turn 3 on the 199th of 200 laps. From there, Pagenaud wasn’t to be denied in collecting his first Indy 500 triumph and 13th career NTT IndyCar Series victory. On the heels of his win May 11 in the INDYCAR Grand Prix on the IMS road course, Pagenaud became the first driver to win more than one NTT IndyCar Series race this season and second Team Penske pilot to win both IMS races in the same year – following Will Power in 2018. Rossi, the 2016 Indy 500 winner as a rookie, overcame two lengthy pit stops for refueling issues, charging back from midpack to contend for the win. But he couldn’t get around Pagenaud after the decisive pass.
CHEVROLET DETROIT GRAND PRIX PRESENTED BY LEAR, RACE 1 JUNE 1
A timely pit stop catapulted Josef Newgarden to victory in the rainshortened opener of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear doubleheader, as well as back into the NTT IndyCar Series championship lead. Newgarden won the race by 0.8237 of a second over Alexander Rossi and capped a perfect day at Belle Isle Park for team owner Roger Penske, whose team also won the IMSA sports
36

car race in the weekend event promoted by Penske’s group. Newgarden made his lone pit stop of the 75-minute race on Lap 17, among the first drivers to switch from Firestone’s grooved rain tires to dry-condition slicks. As Newgarden entered pit lane, a full-course caution was called when Ed
Jones’ car slid into a tire barrier in Turn 7. “I think when we pitted was the right time to pit,” Newgarden said. “You could tell the rain tires were starting to go off, the rears were overheating terribly because it was getting dry. We pitted at the right time and the yellow helped us even further. It was a great call.” Newgarden was
never headed over the final 25 laps. It resulted in the 12th win of the Tennessean’s eight-year NTT IndyCar Series career and second this season. The start of the race was delayed more than an hour after a thunderstorm moved through the area. INDYCAR adjusted the race from its scheduled 70 laps to a timed event, with 43 laps completed when the checkered flag waved for Newgarden.

CHEVROLET DETROIT GRAND PRIX PRESENTED BY LEAR, RACE 2 JUNE 2
On the same day he was bestowed an honor by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Scott Dixon wrote another chapter in his royal Indy car history. And took a majestic dip in the Scott Fountain to celebrate. Dixon recovered from a crash and last-place finish the day before to win the second race of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear doubleheader. The victory was the 45th of the five-time NTT IndyCar Series champion’s career and moved Dixon within seven wins of tying Mario Andretti for second on the all-time Indy car list. Dixon crossed the Raceway at Belle Isle Park finish line 1.9419 seconds ahead of rookie Marcus Ericsson, who posted his first podium finish. Before the race, it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II appointed Dixon the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his services to motorsports. It came as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognizing achievements of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom. Dixon’s native New Zealand is part of the British Commonwealth.
DXC TECHNOLOGY 600 JUNE 8
Josef Newgarden came seemingly from nowhere to win the latest electrifying NTT IndyCar Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. The 2019 championship leader fended off Alexander Rossi over the final 10 laps to capture the DXC Technology 600. by 0.8164 of a second and collect his 13th career win, third this season and first on a superspeedway. “Feels awesome to win here,” Newgarden said. “I knew we’d get it done here at some point. We’ve had fast cars (but) it never has materialized. Tonight, it happened.” Starting seventh in the 22-car field, Newgarden didn’t
lead until Lap 190 of the 248-lap event on the 1.5-mile, high-banked oval. A lightningquick final pit stop on Lap 198, accompanied by equally fast laps before and after the stop, put the 28-year-old Tennessean in position to retake the lead on the 202nd lap, and he never surrendered it. “I knew once we pitted and basically got back to where we were before the pit stop on the green-flag sequence, we had such a fuel advantage on everybody,” Newgarden said. “If we could get to the lead, I could crank out super-quick laps and jump everybody. That’s what we did.”
a huge testament to the whole organization.” Starting second, Rossi passed pole sitter Colton Herta on the first of 55 laps around the 14-turn, 4.014-mile Wisconsin road course and was never
headed. The only lap Rossi didn’t lead came on the last of his three pit stops in the caution-free race. He returned to the top of the leaderboard when Graham Rahal made his last stop a lap later.
REV GROUP GRAND PRIX AT ROAD AMERICA JUNE 23
For Alexander Rossi, an utterly dominant drive to victory in the REV Group Grand Prix presented by AMR was just the tonic he needed. The Andretti Autosport driver led every lap but one Road America’s demanding, high-speed permanent circuit, winning by 28.4391 seconds over Will Power. It gave Rossi a second commanding victory in the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season and the seventh of his four-year career. More impor-
tantly, it closed the 27-year-old Californian within seven points of the championship lead with seven races remaining. “It was probably one of the best race cars I’ve ever had,” Rossi said of his No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda. “We have been quick through the whole season, but we just haven’t really had it come our way as many times as we want, for one reason or another. To come out and be able to do what we did today is

of the season – the 14th of his career – on France’s national day. The pole sitter led 80 of the 85 laps in the No. 22 DXC Technology Chevrolet and held back five-time series champion Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing in
the late going to score his first victory on the 11-turn, 1.786-mile temporary street circuit. “I’m very proud to fly the French flag here in a cousin country, which is Canada,” the Indianapolis 500 winner said. Pagenaud’s position atop the leaderboard was threatened only a couple of times, the first being in the initial dash to Turn 1. Dixon challenged him but couldn’t execute the pass. From there, Pagenaud built an 8-second lead before incurring traffic
in the final laps. Dixon drew close but settled for his 44th career second-place finish (fittingly second on the sport’s all-time list). Alexander Rossi of Andretti Autosport finished third, one position ahead of series points leader Josef Newgarden of Team Penske. The first four finishers left Exhibition Place as the top four drivers in the standings. Ontario native James Hinchcliffe of Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports finished sixth in his home race.

Carlin will run the No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet at Mid-Ohio alongside Max Chilton and the No. 59 Gallagher Carlin Chevrolet, but a driver had not been announced as of press time. The No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet has seen multiple drivers this season with Patricio O’Ward, Sage Karam, and Charlie Kimball all taking their turns piloting the car.
In 2018 Chilton joined the newly formed Carlin team. His best result to date came at the 2017 Indianapolis 500 where he finished 4th, after leading a race-high 50 laps. INDY LIGHTS
Ohio native Ryan Norman enjoyed the fruits of success at Road America.
PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES
More than 140 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires competitors have graduated to the NTT IndyCar Series since the advent of what was initially known as the American Racing Series in 1986, including all but three of the 33 series champions. There seems little doubt that this year’s two primary contenders, Oliver Askew, 22, from Jupiter, Fla., and Rinus VeeKay, 18, from Hoofddorp, Netherlands, are set to follow in their footsteps.
D
espite being separated by almost four years in age, the two former stars of the karting world have been vying for supremacy since making the switch to cars in 2017. They locked horns firstly in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship, wherein Askew emerged victorious, then again last year in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, when it was VeeKay’s turn to hold the upper hand. VeeKay and his family had attracted support from the Dutch motorsports federation, as well as some well-established sponsors, to take the first step onto the acclaimed Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires. His preparation included a full slate of testing and a preliminary attack on the MRF Formula 2000 Championship in India prior to the start of the 2017 North American season. Unsurprisingly, he hit the ground running with three podium finishes in his first three starts. VeeKay came upon a buzz-saw combination in the form of Askew and Cape

Motorsports, but second place in the championship, with three wins and 12 podiums from just 14 races, clearly marked him as a future star. VeeKay built upon that platform in 2018. He swept both Indy Pro 2000 races on debut at St. Petersburg, Fla., and ended the season a convincing champion for Juncos Racing. His reward was a scholarship prize of more than $600,000 to make the move
into Indy Lights for 2019. Once again the amiable Dutchman has made a strong start with three victories from the opening eight races. For Askew, the route to Indy Lights was rather more complicated. Neither he nor his family held any connections in the car racing industry. He didn’t have any significant sponsorship to his name either, but he managed to create a few crucial opportunities. Earning a Team
USA Scholarship allowed him to meet some influential insiders, impress during two end-ofseason Formula Ford events in England and secure an entry into the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout. Askew once again stepped up, claiming the top prize and ensuring a future for himself in USF2000. Six wins from the opening seven races set him on course to win the championship and

another Mazda Scholarship to graduate into Indy Pro 2000 for 2018. The year, from his perspective, was disappointing with only one win, three poles and third place in the final points table, but he had done enough to attract the attention of Andretti Autosport, the season’s dominant Indy Lights team, and ink a contract for 2019. Askew hasn’t looked back. He began with a podium at St. Petersburg and seemed poised to score his first win in Round Two after qualifying on pole position, only to find himself parked heavily against

the wall in Turn Two following contact with arch-rival VeeKay. Undaunted, Askew bounced back to win twice at Circuit of The Americas, then gained the points lead with a thrilling victory in the Freedom 100 Presented by Cooper Tires in front of a huge Carb Day crowd at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Askew and VeeKay will continue their battle for supremacy this weekend in the Cooper Tires Indy Lights Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Both have shone at the undulating 2.4-mile parkland circuit in the past, with Askew winning

from the pole in USF2000 and VeeKay scooping both Indy Pro 2000 races last year, but there are plenty of other potential winners looking to grab some of the limelight. Prime among them are two more Andretti Autosport Dallara-AER IL-15s piloted by Aurora, Ohio, native Ryan Norman and Robert Megennis, from New York, N.Y., both of whom have already tasted the fruits of victory this year, and a second Juncos entry for Canadian Dalton Kellett. Both Norman and Kellett notched up podium finishes at MidOhio in 2018. David Malukas,
from Chicago, Ill., is the youngest driver in the field at age 17 but has already made his mark by securing a podium finish on his USF2000 debut at Road America in 2017 and a pair of dominant Indy Pro 2000 wins at the same venue last year. The transition to Indy Lights has proven difficult but Malukas already has one podium finish to this credit and has clearly benefited from the skills of BN/Team Pelfrey stablemate Toby Sowery, from Cambridge, England, who began his Indy Lights career with a pair of podium finishes at St. Petersburg.

COOPER TIRES USF2000 CHAMPIONSHIP BY Jeremy Shaw
T
he Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship represents the first step on the highly acclaimed open-wheel racing development ladder, the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires, which provides scholarships and other awards worth more than $2.5 million so that talented young drivers may progress all the way from the grassroots of the sport to the NTT IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500. Last December, for the third year in succession, 20 drivers
under the age of 25, from as far afield as Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom, were invited to attend a shootout at the Bondurant Racing School in Chandler, Ariz. Up for grabs was a $200,000 Mazda Scholarship to progress into USF2000, which has been at the forefront of driver development since being imported from Europe as a national championship in 1990. Since then it has seen a host of talented alumni make their way up to the pinnacle of the
sport, including Greg Moore, Paul Tracy, Jimmy Vasser, Dan Wheldon, J.R. Hildebrand, Dane Cameron and Spencer Pigot, to name but a few. Hunter McElrea is the most recent youngster who aspires
to follow in their footsteps. Born in Southern California to New Zealand parents, McElrea earned his ticket to the scholarship shootout by winning last year’s Australian Formula Ford Championship. His prowess
Colin Kaminsky (left) and Hunter McElrea both hope to emerge as Number One this weekend for Pabst Racing.

both on and out of the car, despite an extraordinarily deep and talented field, ensured he was a deserving winner. McElrea, 19, had previously showed his capabilities with a series of quick lap times for Pabst Racing in the annual Chris Griffis Memorial Test at Indianapolis both in 2017 and 2018, so it came as no surprise when he confirmed he would be joining the two-time and defending Team Championship winning organization for his rookie campaign in North America. McElrea took to the Tatuus USF-17 like a duck to water, finishing on the podium in six of the first seven races this season, including a well-deserved maiden victory at Pabst’s home track, Road America. Unfortunately for McElrea, he has found himself ranged against another extraordinarily talented rookie in Braden Eves. After making an impressive one-off appearance at the end of the 2018 season, Eves, 20, from New Albany, Ohio, joined reigning and multiple championship-winning team Cape Motorsports and promptly won

the opening four races on the bounce to take a commanding championship lead. The Capes also field another pair of Tatuus USF-17s for series veteran Darren Keane, from Boca Raton, Fla., and Puerto Rico-based rookie Reece Gold, who is one of no fewer than three 14-year-olds in the series this year. Fast but almost totally bereft of any good fortune during the opening half of the season, Keane has nevertheless bounced back in the points table and is sure to be a leading contender in this weekend’s Cooper Tires USF2000 Grand Prix Presented by Allied Building Products. An intensely competitive field will include at least another dozen potential winners. Prime among them is the four-car squad from Pabst Racing, with McElrea joined by veterans Colin Kaminsky, from Homer Glen, Ill., who has already claimed two pole positions this year, and Brazilian Bruna Tomaselli, the only female in the field, plus rookie Yuven Sundaramoorthy, who, in common with his team, hails from Oconomowoc, Wis.
New Albany’s Braden Eves has opened up a commanding championship lead.
Former karting star Jak Crawford has learned quickly since joining DEForce Racing.
Others to keep an eye on include Australian teenager Cameron Shields, who convincingly won on the Lucas Oil Raceway oval for Newman Wachs Racing, and 14-yearold teammate Nolan Siegel, from California; the pair of DEForce Racing entries piloted by Manuel Sulaiman, from Puebla, Mexico, who already has a brace of podium finishes to his name, and yet another 14-year-old, Jak Crawford, from Houston, Texas, who stunned onlookers by finishing fourth in two of his first three races; another former karting star, Christian Rasmussen, from Denmark (Jay Howard Driver Development); fast-emerging second-generation Brazilian
racer Eduardo Barrichello (Miller Vinatieri Motorsports); and Englishman Matt RoundGarrido (BN Racing), who has amassed plenty of experience and race wins in UK Formula Ford 1600 competition over the past few years. In addition, Legacy Autosport will enter two cars for Indiana natives Zach Holden, who already has a podium finish to his credit this year, and former karter and graduate of the Lucas Oil School of Racing Timmy Pagliuso, who will be taking a little time off from his regular job as inside rear tire changer for Team RLL’s Takuma Sato in the NTT IndyCar Series to make his USF2000 debut this weekend.

he opening four weekends of this year rebranded Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires each saw a different driver dominating the results sheet. As such no firm favorite had emerged to claim a scholarship prize worth almost $600,000 to graduate from the middle step of the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires openwheel development ladder to the top step, Indy Lights, in 2020. Popular Road to Indy veteran Thompson, from Red Deer, Alb., had been the first to shine in St. Petersburg, Fla. His team, Abel Motorsports, is new to the series this year but Thompson, 21, is a relative old hand after finishing second in the 2018 title-chase to Rinus VeeKay. Thompson also had placed second and third in two prior seasons of competition in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship. The combination took the Florida streets by
storm as Thompson parlayed a pair of pole positions into two race wins. Contrast that with his fortunes in the next two races on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Grand Prix road course, where the team struggled to find an optimal setup and Thompson qualified toward the back of the field. Thankfully, strong racecraft and a few slices of good fortune enabled him to salvage a pair of fifth-place finishes, but that was far from what both he and the team had expected. Instead, Swedish rookie Rasmus Lindh stepped up to the plate for the defending champion team Juncos Racing. After finishing second in his rookie North American season last year in USF2000, Lindh, 18, has been by far the most consistent qualifier since graduating to Indy Pro 2000. He made an excellent start from the outside pole to snatch the lead from Thompson in
the St. Petersburg opener, and while he was unable to keep the more experienced Canadian behind him and could manage only fourth in Race Two it was clearly only a matter of time before he would claim his first Road to Indy victory. Sure enough, that came in convincing style at Indianapolis, where he doubled up in Race Two to snag the points lead. Fellow rookie Danial Frost, from Singapore, also has impressed with the Exclusive Autosport team after stepping up from merely a partial season of USF2000 in 2018. The 17-year-old marked his graduation by finishing fourth in Race One at St. Petersburg, then claimed a hat-trick of podium appearances which extended through the Indianapolis GP weekend. Next time out on the LOR oval he was a dominant force. Frost was fastest at the pre-race test by an astonishing half-second margin, and while that advantage diminished in the race, he was never seriously challenged en route to a well-deserved maiden win. The fourth weekend of the season at Road America saw Kyle Kirkwood emerge as top dog. The 20-year-old from Jupiter, Fla., completely dominated last year USF2000 title-chase, winning 12 of the 14 races and claiming a Mazda Scholarship to move up one step on the ladder this year. He found the transition to IP2000 rather more challenging, and it certainly didn’t help that his arrangement with RP Motorsport USA was

signed only a few days before the start of the season, which meant he had virtually no testing with which to familiarize himself with the significantly faster Tatuus PM-18. Of course, Kirkwood already had useful experience of more powerful cars after also blitzing last year F3 Americas championship, but his victory aspirations were countered by incidents in the first race at St. Petersburg and the second race at Indianapolis. He struggled a little, too, at Lucas Oil Raceway, where he couldn’t maintain his outside front row starting position and was pipped to the final podium place on the last lap by an opportunistic Lindh. Road America provided the turning point. After qualifying third, Kirkwood quickly dispatched polesitter Thompson in the opening race before romping away to a clear victory. He started third again on Sunday but once again soon made his way forward, diving past fastest qualifier Lindh with an incisive move, then holding fire under pressure to secure the weekend sweep. The same quartet of drivers were to the fore in the most recent races two weeks ago on the streets of Toronto. Only this time honors were shared fairly evenly. Frost and Kirkwood each claimed a race win, while Lindh and Thompson scored a

brace of podium finishes apiece. Accordingly, the championship remains nicely poised as the protagonists arrive for this weekend Cooper Tires Indy Pro 2000 Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio for Rounds 10 and 11 of the 16-race season. Lindh currently holds a handy 30-point advantage, 237-230 over Thompson, but Kirkwood and Frost lurk menacingly on 205 and 202 points, respectively. All of the contenders have experience at Mid-Ohio, with Thompson securing a pair of USF2000 fastest laps in 2016, plus a race victory in 2017, while Kirkwood claimed a sweep of all three USF2000 races last year. Let’s see if he can maintain that form this time.
Left to right: Sting Ray Robb, race winner Danial Frost and points leader Rasmus Lindh shared the podium at Lucas Oil Raceway.

ntense, close racing is the hallmark of the Battery Tender ® Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires ®. Over the course of the first six rounds, the Mazda MX-5 Cup drivers have delivered nearly 1,000 passes with a 3.6576-second total margin of victory. Now heading into the second half of the season, the top three spots in the points championship are only separated by eight points. With more than 30 cars slated for the Mid-Ohio 200, fans can
expect another thrilling pair of races from the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup drivers.
THE COMPETITION
The 2018 double-header at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course saw both race wins decided by last-lap passes. In the first race, the then 14-year-old Robert Noaker, set a Guinness World Record and made Global Mazda MX-5 Cup history as the youngest person to win an IndyCar-sanctioned race after climbing from 15th on the
grid. Fresh off of a win at Road America in June, Noaker (No. 13 Sick Sideways Racing) returns to Mid-Ohio’s 2.258-miles of winding and undulating natural terrain. But before he can repeat his success from last season, he will have to face 2018 Mid-Ohio winner and 2018 Vice Champion Bryan Ortiz (No. 4 Copeland Motorsports). During his previous visit to Mid-Ohio, Ortiz won the weekend finale with a breathtaking pass in the closing moments of the race. Ortiz enters the weekend third
in the championship, trailing championship leader Drake Kemper (No. 99 Sick Sideways Racing) by only eight points. Adding to the competitive storyline is the rookie championship battle, which will see the winner emerge with $75,000 in support from Mazda. Leading the rookie points is 2018 Mazda Road to 24 Shootout winner Michael Carter (No. 08 Copeland Motorsports), who scored his first pole and podium finish at Barber Motorsports Park

earlier this year. Carter, 16, won the Mazda Road to 24 Shootout along with $100,000 in support from Mazda toward his 2019 Mazda MX-5 Cup season and has scored a total of five top-10 finishes so far in 2019. Fourteen-year-old Tyler Maxson (No. 74 Copeland Motorsports) and Gresham Wagner (No. 99 Sick Sideways Racing) are also rookies to keep an eye on this weekend. Maxson, who is second in the rookie points, has scored six top-10 results so

The secret to this level of competition starts with a field of hungry racers, a focus on parity and consistent rules to deliver low-cost racing. Ahead of the 2019 season, Mazda introduced a new two-class structure: ND1 and ND2. The ND2 is the new version of the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup car, equipped with the 7,500 RPM
SKYACTIV®-G 2.0-liter engine available in the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which debuted at the beginning of the 2019 season. The ND2 class utilizes the new, 181-horsepower version of the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup car, while the ND1 class still features the previous generation Global MX-5 Cup car.
CHAMPIONSHIP PRIZE
Racing with cars that start on showroom floors, it is the driver that makes the difference. The 2019 ND2 class champion will receive a $200,000 career-
advancement scholarship from Mazda to use toward the Mazda Road to 24 ladder while the ND1 class champion will receive a $100,000 scholarship that can be applied to the 2020 Global Mazda MX-5 Cup championship. The Rookie of the Year in the ND2 class will receive a $75,000 scholarship from Mazda. Nikko Reger won the inaugural award last season and is now competing in the IMSA Prototype Challenge.
PARTNERS
The Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship is owned by Mazda North American Operations, and the series continues to benefit from the support of title sponsor Battery Tender ® and presenting sponsor BFGoodrich Tires ®, both of which have renewed their support of the championship, while Andersen Promotions continues with its third season as the promoter of the series.

SPEED ENERGY STADIUM SUPER TRUCKS: BRINGING JUMPING TRUCKS TO THE MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE
When Stadium SUPER Trucks made its pavement debut in 2013 at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, fans were wowed at what appeared to be a Baja desert race heating up the downtown Long Beach waterfront circuit. The small but durable trucks were catapulted from man-made ramps at more than 100 mph, launching drivers nearly 20 feet high and 150 feet down course.
W
hat they actually witnessed was a racing series that has quickly garnered the attention of extreme sports enthusiasts worldwide, referred to as SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks. Robby Gordon, a NASCAR and IndyCar veteran, created the series to bring the excitement of off-road truck racing to large crowds of race fans in metropolitan markets. “I like to say that NASCAR and IndyCar racing brings fans to the race track and Stadium SUPER Trucks racing brings fans to the fences,” Gordon said. “When people see these trucks fly it blows them away. We raced in front of more than a million people last year and millions more on television, and we are very excited about where the series is going. Bringing the trucks to MidOhio, and pairing with the NTT Indycar Series for the inaugural Stadium SUPER Trucks at Mid-Ohio is really cool and it will give all the great race fans of Ohio something to be excited about.” Now internationally acclaimed, the series has sparked an interest in several NASCAR and IndyCar notables – Greg Biffle, Rusty Wallace, Casey Mears, Boris Said, Justin Lofton, Arie Luyendyk Jr., Paul
68
|
Tracy, Davey Hamilton, E.J. Viso and Jimmy Vasser to just name a few. But there’s plenty of room for aspiring racers, too, which is something Gordon values. Gordon built the series’ foundation with a vision of an even playing field – competition based purely on driver skill. Unlike other racing leagues where vehicles are constructed by individual teams, SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks features identically prepared trucks for each driver. Not only does this raise the level of intensity on the course, but also makes the series more affordable for drivers. “Auto racing is a tough sport to break into,” Gordon said. “It’s not just about skill, it’s about funding. There are so many talented racers vying for a chance and a very small percentage of those

actually see their hobby turn into a career. My goal with Stadium SUPER Trucks was to help more drivers fuel their passion for motorsports.” Twenty-five year old Matt Brabham is a testament to Gordon’s business model and is one to watch during the Stadium SUPER Trucks debut at Mid-Ohio. The Australian native clearly knows his way around a racetrack working his way thru the open-wheel ranks, and finding a home in Stadium SUPER Trucks the last five years claiming 15 wins, and 52 podium finishes. Stadium SUPER Trucks at Mid-Ohio marks the series’ second scheduled race in a stretch of five races in seven weeks. Look for the trucks to hit the circuit on Friday afternoon with a 30-minute practice/ qualifying session at 12:35 P.M. which will set the starting grid for Saturday afternoon’s SST at Mid-Ohio Race No. 1 at 12:35 P.M. Sunday afternoon the trucks will hold their Mid-Ohio Finale at 2:05 P.M. just ahead of The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio for the NTT Indycar Series. For more information, visit www.stadiumsupertrucks.com or follow updates via Facebook at Stadium SUPER Trucks, and on Twitter and Instagram @SSuperTrucks.

Gamma Titanium Aluminide. Jets use this stuff for a reason.
BorgWarner’s EFR™ Series super-cores and turbochargers are built using Gamma Titanium Aluminide. This lightweight, high-strength material is close to 50% lighter than its Inconel® counterpart and helps to deliver quick engine boost when needed. No matter if it’s on the road or in the sky, nothing comes close to the boosting sensation delivered by Gamma-Ti.
