WELCOME BACK!

W

e’re glad you’re joining us amidst all the changes and flux in our daily lives. This issue we’ve chosen to focus on ways to get outside and which vehicles are best suited to help you get there. Looking at tow capacities, the reality of trailer maintenance, and driver comfort we consider what makes the perfect family/gear hauler. Lee Bailie takes us along on the launch of the 2020 Nissan Titan, with its refreshed interior and improved off road capabilities. Michael Bettencourt also takes a test drive of the Cadillac Live platform that allows shoppers to interact directly with Brand Ambassadors, without leaving the comfort of their homes. Our motorsports editor, George Webster, looks at how some racing series have adapted to the shut downs with virtual racing and fanless live events. If you’re looking to get outside, we explore some drivable destinations that offer a great escape. In addition to destination guides, we have included a deep dive into how to prepare your gear. From masks to coolers to sanitizing wipes we will help you get your trunk packed out to perfection, so you can travel confidently, secure in the knowledge that you are doing your best to abide by public health best practices. Wherever your travels take you this summer, we wish you a safe journey!

ALEXA COMING TO SELECT GM VEHICLES

IN OUR EVER MORE CONNECTED DIGITAL WORLD, drivers will

soon have the option of adding Alexa to their 2018-or-newer Chevrolet,

Buick, Cadillac or GMC. Drivers will be able to check the news, control their smart homes, or add to their shopping lists, all without taking their eyes off the road. Alexa will also be able to integrate with the vehicle’s navigation to offer turn by turn directions and will be able to play music as requested.

CELL SIGNAL

SAVER

AS MORE CANADIANS EMBARK ON ROAD TRIPS, having a secure cell signal has never been

so important. Getting caught between cell towers and having maps go down can lead to disaster quickly, so a cell signal booster might be the tool you need to give you peace of mind on the backroads. WeBoost offers Canadian-market specific boosters that allow multiple users and are installed without tools, making it possible to transfer between vehicles. With fewer dropped calls and greater hotspot capability, it is definitely something to consider if you’re planning to explore your province this summer. www.weboost.ca/products/drive-reach

INSURANCE RELIEF

ELUSIVE

According to a survey done by InsuranceHotline. com only a quarter of Canadians have received any insurance relief during the pandemic. Interestingly, even for the small number of Canadians who did get the relief, 64% deemed the help negligible. With more Canadians working from home and with driving habits drastically altered, the lackluster support from the insurance industry is notable. Of the drivers who did receive some relief the vast majority were in Ontario and Quebec (66%).

2020 KIA TELLURIDE SX LIMITED STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE BAILIE

I’VE ALWAYS BEEN INTRIGUED BY THE KIA TELLURIDE. FROM THE TIME IT WAS FIRST SHOWN AS A CONCEPT AT THE 2016 DETROIT AUTO SHOW, TO WHEN I FINALLY DROVE ONE FOR A WEEK FOUR YEARS LATER, THIS BIG AND BOXY THREE-ROW SUV HAS LEFT A MARK ON YOURS TRULY.

O

n the face of it, there’s nothing unique or groundbreaking about it. Many other manufacturers build similar SUVs targeted at the same audience (families), and in a similar price range ($45K – $55K). So what makes the Telluride special? Nothing really, at least not from a mechanical standpoint. The Telluride shares a platform with its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Palisade, and features the same engine and transmission. It even rides on the same wheelbase. Its 3.8-litre V6 produces 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque, which is paired with an 8-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. It seats either seven or eight passengers depending on trim. Just like the Palisade. No, I think what I find most appealing about the Telluride

12

IGNITIONMAG.CA :

is its aesthetic. Its rugged, squarish proportions give it an adventurous character that, for all its upmarket aspirations, the Palisade just can’t match. Kia isn’t afraid to take big swings in the design realm – something that could be said for almost all of its products over the past few years – and with the Telluride, they’ve really knocked it out of the park. From its wide, expansive grille, to its square LED headlights with their orange daytime

a boat to the cottage on a long weekend? No problem. Back woods off-roading? Anytime. The Telluride comes in four trims for Canada: EX, SX, SX Limited and SX Limited with Nappa (leather). I spent a week driving an SX Limited tester finished in Dark Moss (drab green) with a black leather interior. This trim comes filled to the brim with stuff, including 20-inch wheels, blind view monitor, dual sunroof, harman/ kardon premium audio, 360-degree camera, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel and a lot more. With all that kit, one might expect a pretty plush driving experience, and that was indeed my experience. My tester delivered a quiet ride, responsive handling for a big SUV and impressive performance from the 3.8-litre V6.

I THINK WHAT I FIND MOST APPEALING ABOUT THE TELLURIDE IS ITS AESTHETIC.

MAXIMUM TOWING CAPACITY: 2,268 KG. / 5,000 LB.

running signature, to sparing use of chrome and bracket-style taillights, the Telluride’s slab-sided, brick proportions transmit a sense of can-do. Take that longhaul family road trip? Check. Tow

But the Telluride earns high marks also for its utility. Beyond its 8-passenger seating, it can tow up to 5,000 lb., has 2,455 litres of cargo space behind the first row, four drive modes (smart, eco, sport and comfort) and three terrain modes (snow, mud and sand) for rougher roads. Or no roads at all. Plus, AWD Lock splits engine torque equally to all four wheels when the going gets tough. Bottom line, the Kia Telluride delivers the premium content buyers expect in this category, but in a package that isn’t boring and mundane. It offers proof that utility, capability and style need not be mutually exclusive.

T

he base 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Laredo) carries a list price of $43,186. It comes with a 3.6-litre V6 engine (295 hp / 260 lb-ft.) paired with an 8-speed automatic, standard 4x4 and a tow rating of 6,200 lb. Pretty good, but what if I told you that you could get the same vehicle with a 707-horsepower V8? Interested? Before saying yes be aware that this Grand Cherokee costs more than 2.5 times as much as the Laredo. Yeah, the sticker the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk carries ($113,745 base MSRP for my tester) is a bit of a buzzkill. Most buyers won’t contemplate forking over that much money even for a split second, but for the few who can and will, they’ll own a Jeep like no other. Because, for all of its other strengths, it’s what’s under the hood that really matters. The Trackhawk is powered by the same 6.2-litre supercharged V8 found in the Dodge Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcats. That’s right: 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft. of torque paired with an 8-speed automatic. It is by far, the most powerful SUV on the market and among the most expensive, for a nonexotic brand at least. Awhile back I had the pleasure of driving a green metallic Trackhawk tester courtesy of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Canada, and despite its massive engine and price tag, there’s more to this rig than gigantic power. For one thing, it comes absolutely loaded with content. Among its many standard

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE BAILIE

2020 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE TRACKHAWK features are 20-inch black satin aluminum wheels, Brembo high-performance front brakes, 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, Alpine premium audio, Nappa leather seating, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats and loads more. On top of that, my tester also has $14,995 worth of options. I don’t have space to list them all, but among the highlights are a rear DVD entertainment centre ($2,150), a signature leather-wrapped interior package with Laguna leather seats, leather-wrapped lower panels and more ($6,995), and a 19-speaker, 825-watt harman/ kardon high-performance audio system ($1,995). The other thing that stands out is, for all its gaudy performance credentials, the Trackhawk is still a Jeep, which means it can do Jeep things like off-roading and driving in snow, thanks to its Quadra-Trac SRT active on-demand 4WD system. It can haul, too. My tester has a tow package ($825) that comes with a Class IV hitch receiver, enabling it to tow up to 7,200 lb.

Make no mistake, the reason to drop $100K-plus on a Trackhawk is for the Hellcat powertrain, and I can attest that it is as advertised. A 0-100 km/h time of about 3.8 seconds is fast for any vehicle, much less an SUV. Track mode and launch control are also standard issue, and while I didn’t try them out this time, I have experienced both in the Charger and Chal-

lenger, and the 6.2L V8 does not disappoint. You’ll love its supercharger whine and will want to take it to the track and the dragstrip because, honestly, that’s what 707 horsepower is for. But if you decide to do a little off-roading on the way there or want to tow another track car home, the Trackhawk is ready. It’s a true sport and utility vehicle.

2020 LEXUS GX 460 STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE BAILIE

HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT THE SECOND GEN LEXUS GX HAS BEEN WITH US SINCE THE EARLY OBAMA YEARS (2009). WHILE ITS LIFE CYCLE MUST BE SURELY WINDING DOWN, IT HAS BEEN UPDATED FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2014.

T

he seven-passenger, body-onframe GX shares a platform with the Toyota 4Runner, but is powered by a 4.6-litre V8 (301 hp / 329 lb-ft.), rather than the 4Runner’s 4.0-litre V6. The 4.6 is mated to a 6-speed automatic with standard 4WD. The 2020 updates include a new front fascia with a revised spindle grille and new triple LED headlights, LED fog lights and combination LED rear combination taillights. On the packaging front, the GX now comes with standard kit, including MultiTerrain Monitor with Underfloor

Other changes include a new steering wheel and shift knob, along with a redesigned 4.2-inch multiinformation cluster display, an additional console USB port and updated alloy wheels. Courtesy of Lexus Canada, I recently spent some time behind the wheel of an Atomic Silver tester with a semi-aniline, Roja red interior. In addition to its long list of standard kit, my tester is also outfitted with the Executive Package ($6,000) which includes a Front Console Cool Box, 19-inch alloy wheels, P265/55R19 Dunlop tires, Trans-

mission Fluid Cooler, Rear Seat Entertainment System and more. The GX isn’t gorgeous by any

means, but its boxy profile has rugged appeal. Its aesthetic of sturdy, capable luxury has aged well, and the facelift give it a modern appearance. The cabin is a mixed bag, however. It is well kitted out from a content perspective, but the look and feel of things is a bit old. The steering wheel and gear shifter are new, but most of the surrounding touch panels and trim pieces are not and they look it. The recessed infotainment touchscreen is small, and it took a second press or two to toggle various functions a few times during my test. Same goes for the hard keys on either side of the screen, although they are handy as shortcuts. On the plus side, everything is smartly laid out. Controls and switches are logically placed, and general comfort is quite high. The GX’s boxy design offers good visibility and the second-row seating area has a good amount of space for normal-sized adults. The third row is better for luggage than people but is fine for small kids. Maximum cargo space is rated at 1,833 litres. Overall, space feels adequate, but it will depend on one’s needs. Compared to other sevenpassenger SUVs I’ve driven, the GX is on the smaller side. Generally, the GX’s performance is average. Acceleration from the 4.6-litre V8 is sluggish, brake feel lacks precision and there’s noticeable body roll in cornering. On the plus side, the GX makes for a good longhaul cruiser with impressive off-road capability and a decent maximum tow rating (2,948 kg. / 6,500 lb.). Overall, the GX gets the job done, albeit not with a great deal of pizzazz. While the Lexus GX 460 doesn’t excite, it comes loaded with premium content, a respected off-road pedigree and Lexus build quality, all for a reasonable price. The GX’s market is small, but those who invest know exactly what they’re buying. And there’s virtue in that.

IF RANGE ANXIETY IS KEEPING YOU FROM SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV), I HAVE GOOD NEWS: THE BATTERIES ARE GETTING BIGGER AND SO IS THEIR RANGE.

T

ake, for instance, the all-new 2020 Kia Soul EV. It can travel up to 383 km on a full charge, more than double that of the outgoing model. The range improvement is due to a 64-kWh liquid-cooled lithium ion polymer battery Kia is using in the top-level Soul EV Limited. Power output from the electric motor is rated at 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft. of torque which is put to the ground via single-speed reduction gear transmission that drives the front wheels. The battery can be charged in as little as one hour with a 100-kW direct current (DC) fast charger. It takes a little longer (75 minutes) with a 75-kW DC charger. With an AC Level 2 charger, Kia projects about 9.5 hours, and if you use an AC Level 1 (i.e. household socket), you won’t be going anywhere for a while: a full charge from dead takes about 59 hours (almost 2.5 days). Alternatively, the base EV Premium model is equipped with a 39.2 lithium-ion battery that produces 134 hp / 291 lb-ft. with a maximum range of 248 km. Despite being down on power and range, the smaller battery can charge in as little as 54 minutes with a 100-kW DC fast charger and in just over six hours with an AC Level 2. The EV Premium also costs $9,000 less than its more powerful sibling. Courtesy of Kia Canada, I recently test drove a black on black EV Limited for a week and came away impressed with its overall capabilities. Both Soul EV trims come loaded with much more standard content than I was expecting.

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE BAILIE

2020 KIA SOUL EV LIMITED $53,390 AS TESTED

The EV Limited comes with leather seating, heads-up display, heated and cooled front seats, sound-reactive mood lights, LED headlights and taillights, 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with embedded navigation and a lot more. The latter three items are also standard on the EV Premium. With so much standard kit on offer, the EV Limited feels quite luxurious for a subcompact crossover. The trim materials aren’t the most expensive but are handsomely designed and are pleasing to interact with, especially the seats, steering wheel and centre console controls. And the reactive mood lighting is something to behold at night. Very cool, indeed. In terms of performance, the Soul EV isn’t fast, but it is peppy. Sport mode (eco,

comfort and eco+ are the others) sharpens the car’s reflexes significantly but consumes more battery, a trade-off I could live with. Interior space is expansive due to the car’s boxy profile, both up front and in the backseat area. Total cargo space behind the first row is rated at 1,735 litres (530 litres behind

the second row, 663 litres with the cargo floor lowered). Overall, the Soul EV’s funky looks and extra battery capacity should be appealing to millennials, although many will likely opt for the EV Premium because, even with the $5K federal rebate, $53K-plus for the EV Limited might be a bit too rich.

2020 NISSAN TITAN NISSAN FULL-SIZE PICK-UP GETS AN OVERHAUL STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE BAILIE

PARK CITY, UTAH USA

elieve it or not, Nissan’s secondgen full-size Titan pick-up was first introduced almost five years ago, which can mean only one thing: time for a refresh. This is an interesting one for me as I was on the first drive press event for the then-new Titan in late 2015 and was eager to see how much had changed between that truck and the updated 2020 model. As it turns out, the amount of change Nissan has thrown at this truck goes far beyond a typical mid-cycle refresh.

truck, and its flanked by large LED headlights with distinctive signatures for both the main element and the daytime running lights. The vast hood looks cleaner and appears less bulbous. From the A-pillar back, the new Titan looks a lot like its predecessor, apart from new LED taillights and a tailgate insert that has a big Titan logo stamped into it. Other styling tweaks are more subtle and include restyled running boards, new wheel designs, along with a new skid plate and tow hooks on PRO 4X models.

NEW FACE

The outgoing Titan has a pleasing cabin environment, especially in PRO 4X and Platinum Reserve grades, and that feeling carries over to the new truck. More noticeable here is how lower grades, such as S and SV, also benefit from Nissan’s cabin freshening. One of the first things to catch my eye, for example, is the new touchscreen display, which is either 8 or 9-inches, depending on grade. These screens are mounted flush into the centre stack for a cleaner appearance and have been given a significant graphical boost.

The first thing that jumps out about the 2020 Titan is its new face. It still looks like a Titan, but the new truck has a bolder, squarer and more high-tech look than its predecessor. The grille remains massive, evoking the ‘powerful warrior’ design of its predecessor, but now has a more high-tech aesthetic. As other truck manufacturers have done, the new Titan will offer different grilles based on model. Generally, the giant rectangle grille appears slightly more raked than the one on the outgoing

Gone is the graininess and washed-out colour palette that plagues the units in older Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The new screens also come loaded with the latest tech, including standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. NissanConnect Services is also standard and offers over-the-air software updates, along with HD Traffic, Wi-Fi hotspot (subscription required) and more. The cabin also features updated upholstery options, depending on grade. For example, the leather seating in Platinum Reserve models is now a single colour as opposed to two-tone, and the cloth seating options in S, SV and PRO 4X models feature new designs and stitching (PRO 4X). New instrument panel graphics are also on tap as Nissan finally appears ready to retire its aging typefaces. Interior noise has been addressed with the application of standard acoustic laminated

glass for the windshield and front side windows. Another big change to note is the availability of a dual-panoramic moonroof, a first-ever feature for the Titan. Nissan says it’s one of the biggest in the segment and is the only vehicle in the category to offer both a roof of this type and overhead assist grips.

GOODBYE CUMMINS

One of the biggest changes for the 2020 Titan is under the hood, where the 5.6-litre Endurance V8

(400 hp / 413 lb-ft.) powers all models. A new 9-speed automatic transmission replaces the outgoing 7-speed with standard fourwheel drive (more on this shortly). The Endurance V8’s numbers, which represent gains of 6 hp and 23 lb-ft. over the outgoing engine, are best-in-class for both standard horsepower and standard torque, according to Nissan. According to Nissan Global Program Director for trucks, Rich Miller, the 5.0-litre Cummins turbo diesel is being dropped due to the

rising cost of meeting emission standards combined with the reality that gas-powered models far outsell their diesel counterparts. He also said money that would have been spent on updating the Cummins to meet tightening emissions standards was redirected towards other aspects of the Titan’s updating. Incidentally, Nissan reps indicated the company spent approximately $230 million USD on the Titan’s redesign. Regardless, the new Endurance V8 is an impressive engine designed to meet the needs of most truck buyers. In regular Titan form, maximum payload and towing are rated at 717 kg and 4,205 kg (1,580 lb. and 9,270 lb.) respectively, while in the larger Titan XD, those figures jump to 1,016 kg / 5,012 kg (2,240 lb. / 11,050 lb.). Note: Titan XD’s maximum towing figures apply to a gooseneck hitch. For a receiver hitch, the maximum figures are 4,894 kg (10,790 lb.). Payload ratings are the same.

TITAN AND TITAN XD

As is the case with the previous model, the 2020 Titan will be available as both Titan and Titan XD. Both trucks using powered by the same powertrain, but what separates them is size. The Titan XD is a fair bit bigger than the Titan – it’s 7.62 cm taller, rides on a wheelbase that’s 30 cm longer and is 37 cm longer overall. Its bed is also longer at 6.5-foot, while the Titan’s is 5.5. With respect to models, there are some significant differences between the U.S. and Canada. These are primarily due to the smaller size of the Canadian truck market and differences that exist within the segment here. The vast U.S. market can support a greater spread of models and configurations, but it doesn’t mean the Titans being sold in Canada are lesser. In fact, Canada’s fewer models are exceedingly well-equipped.

At any rate, Nissan Canada provided a list of differences, which I’ll summarize. The Canadianmarket Titan does not offer: twotone paint, Brilliant Silver Metallic exterior finish, SL trim, 4x2 (on any model), King Cab, S Utility Package and SV Chrome Package. Several other packaging differences also exist. So, what this means is Canadian-market Titans will be available in Crew Cab only with standard 4x4. The Titan is available in six grades: S, SV, SV Premium, PRO-4X, PRO-4X Luxury and Platinum. The Titan XD has three grade options: SV, PRO-4X and Platinum Reserve.

IMPRESSIONS ON AND OFF-ROAD READY Nissan brought a selection of U.S.-market pre-production Titans to Utah (the XD wasn’t available) in SV, PRO-4X and Platinum Reserve trim for sampling in and around Park City. For the on-road, I drove a fully loaded Deep Pearl Blue Platinum Reserve Crew Cab 4x4 with a rich brown leather interior. Apart from impressive acceleration response, I was struck by the quietness of the cabin. There are high-end luxury sedans that aren’t as tomb-like as this truck. Now, I wasn’t towing anything, so the engine wasn’t under load, but the serenity of the cabin is impressive, nonetheless. Two other facets that also stood out were the zero gravity seats which deliver a great deal of support and comfort, and the Fender audio system which sounds simply magnificent. Next, it was time to test the Titan’s towing capability. I drove a white SV carrying about 2,223 kg (4,900 lb.) of snowmobiles (including trailer) and took note of how quickly the Endurance V8 passes in the 80 – 110 km/h zone. Nissan says the new Titan is about a second faster here than the outgoing truck, and it does indeed feel quite responsive. I was also impressed by how stable

20

the truck was on the exercise’s Interstate route. After putting the truck in tow mode, I didn’t need to adjust the trailer sway control once and the 9-speed automatic shifted smoothly and didn’t hunt for gears. Finally, I drove a PRO-4X finished in Baja Storm (taupelike) on an off-road trail near our hotel which reached a height of about 305 metres (1,000 feet), and consisted of dirt, loose gravel and lots of bumps, but sadly no water crossings. No matter where the trails may take you, the PRO-4X is ready, with its standard electronic locking rear diff, hill descent control, Bilstein shocks, front skid plate, lava red tow hooks and 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. This truck is truly in its element after the pavement ends, and it had no issue conquering the uphill ascent of our test trail. In particular, the Around-View Monitor was quite handy navigating in tight confines over partially blind turns, and the hill descent control made coming down less white-knuckle than it could have been. Overall, I’d say that the rugged good looks of the PRO4X with its blacked-out trim, jacked-up stance and all-terrain tires make it the most attractive Titan to these eyes.

CONCLUSION

THIS TRUCK IS TRULY IN ITS ELEMENT AFTER THE PAVEMENT ENDS, AND IT HAD NO ISSUE CONQUERING THE UPHILL ASCENT OF OUR TEST TRAIL.

The many changes made to the 2020 Nissan Titan should appeal to truck buyers. While Titan sales are but a tiny fraction of those of entrenched players in the segment (2,807 sold in Canada in 2019), Nissan has built a truck that is as good as any available from its competitors. While the absence of a diesel option and fewer cab configurations may turn some buyers off, Nissan is wise to focus on consumers seeking a different truck experience. Nissan isn’t likely to load the Titan with incentives to chase the lower end of the market or to boost sales, and it probably won’t be positioned to compete on price alone either. However, all Titans come equipped with standard fourwheel drive, along with lots of cutting-edge technology (such as standard Nissan Safety Shield 360), style and performance. Nissan has called the Titan a niche truck, but the many changes being made should enable it to flourish in its corner of the fullsize segment.

after picking up this 2020 Cadillac XT4, the smallest of Cadillac’s three SUVs in its most athletic Sport trim, its lavish features, cooling and massaging seats and super comfortable ride had imparted an air of elegance and high-end refinement. But for an as tested price just north of $60,000, there were two useful features I found surprising it didn’t come with: one, a power rear tailgate that could be operated by a foot sweep, and two, an adaptive cruise control function, which is available on fully loaded Civics and Corollas at roughly half the price of this Cadillac. Luckily, Cadillac had set me up that day for a sampling of Cadillac Live, the brand’s unique livestreaming service available for anyone with questions on any new Cadillac, whether a customer or not. Any visitor to Cadillac’s U.S. or Canadian consumer site since last year can choose to start a Live session, which connects you with brand experts that can either answer a couple of questions on a particular model, as I had, or give you a fuller walkaround of the vehicle’s highlights. “If something like wireless charging is more important to you than,

2020 CADILLAC XT4 SPORT say, the twin-clutch all-wheel drive, we’ll spend more time on that,” said Zain, our Cadillac Live agent, who talks to you through your computer or phone’s audio and visual streaming, confirming early on that he can only hear you, but not see you. “It’s hyper-personalized.” Unlike the chat function available on most dealer or OEM sites, you can see him as he walks around the vehicle, showing it with a set of golf clubs in the rear cargo area, and sitting in the back seat to demonstrate its rear legroom. Zain said he was six-foot one feet tall, and had the front seat set for himself, and still had an inch or so to spare when sitting in the back. A cynic may have asked him for proof of his height or seat settings, but just those two aspects of the walkaround highlighted the advantage over the usual highly processed brochure-like photos of the cargo and rear seat areas available online. Zain was the one who told me that unlike most vehicles with a power tailgate that can be opened using your foot even with the key in your pocket and your arms full, the XT4 didn’t involve a foot sweep or kick under the rear badge of the car, but under the left rear corner of the bumper. RTFM, readers of the owner’s manual would say. Apparently

24

there’s a projected light with a Cadillac badge that shows where to kick at night, but I didn’t see any light on the sunny days I tried it. And Zain said he was receiving more and more calls from owners with specific questions like this, though the majority of his sessions were still from those looking to research a purchase or lease. As knowledgeable as these brand ambassadors clearly are, the adaptive cruise control threw him for a loop. After I had tested the cruise multiple times, I couldn’t find a way to activate the function that would actively have it automatically slow down

and speed up the XT4, and thought that I either didn’t have the option, or there may be a step to activate it I was missing. He showed me a button on the upper trim Sport steering wheel that he suggested indicated the car came with the feature, which my photos verified were on my car. The GM rep that had ordered the car soon confirmed that no, in fact my particular vehicle didn’t come with the Driver Assist safety package that contained that option. It is available, for $1,200 he said, but its omission is as surprising as much for the inclusion of so many other pampering luxuries

as its elevated as tested price for a subcompact luxury crossover. And it was a good reminder to always double check your facts, even from credible sources. Interestingly, the Cadillac Live program actually debuted in Canada last spring, before its U.S. launch in the fall. And the numbers bear out the program’s success: even with the cratering of the car sales market this spring due to COVID19, there’s been a 121% increase in Live sessions this May compared to last May in Canada, and a 73% increase in sessions from April to May of this year, as well as a growing piece of the Canadian luxury car pie,

WHAT’S GOOD: Sharply stylish, usefully roomy, abundant luxury features; heavenly cooled and massaging front seat options. WHAT’S BAD: Only available engine neither most powerful nor most fuel efficient in its class; shift paddles can be slow to respond, even in Sport; lots of options can make it pricy.

according to GM data. With so many work and social meetings happening online over the spring, there’s a growing comfort and confidence with using such livestreaming technology, which provided Cadillac a distinct advantage over other luxury automakers when retailers across the country couldn’t legally open the doors of their vehicles or sales departments. Though not perfectly smooth, or as compelling as actually driving the vehicles and live interactions with the materials and driving feel of the actual Cadillac on the road, this Live session gave me a better understanding of the XT4, and a new appreciation for how the brand is

pushing itself aggressively forward in a marketing sense. The XT4 Sport itself seems less ambitious from a product perspective, featuring the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain as the rest of the XT4 lineup, with no hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric version available. Granted, it’s an advanced little mill, with cylinder deactivation and start-stop standard, and capable of towing an impressive 3,500 pounds with the tow package. That said, its turbo four offers less power than the Sport’s rivals like the M version of the BMW X2 and the Volvo XC40, but worse fuel economy. Performance models from Cadillac have long been been designated with V-models, and Cadillac has already confirmed that its 310 hp CT4-V sedan will be available with an even higher performance-oriented Blackwing version for 2021. And while a person inside GM confirmed that there will be a Blackwing version of one of Cadillac’s SUVs unveiled this summer, online whispers suggest it won’t be new-for-2019 XT4. The XT4 does offer some appreciated driver involvement, with shift paddles to make the most of the XT4’s 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, as well as a Sport mode that also helps sharpen up engine response and suspension damping, though the nine-speed automatic is clearly geared to comfortable

smoothness over instantly sharp shifts. But its sumptuous interior, panoramic sunroof, and massage seats especially tend to encourage a more relaxed drive, with available WiFi and heated seats in the rear that should help keep back seat passengers happy on longer drives, in a body that’s one of the largest and roomiest in its admittedly compact class. If you’re more interested in performance at the pump, the allwheel drive XT4 Sport averages 9.7 L/100 km (10.9 city, 8.2 highway), with the front-wheel drive base XT4 coming in at a slightly more efficient 8.9 L/100 km. Both of these are notably thirstier than the similarly sized and priced Lexus NX 300h hybrid, with Cadillac reportedly skipping over hybrids and plug-in hybrids to jump straight to all-electric vehicles for its green vehicles – eventually. This will start with its upcoming mid-size Lyriq all-electric SUV, planned to be unveiled in April at the now-cancelled NY auto show, but will likely still be more than a year away when it’s eventually unveiled later this year. In the end, there’s ambition on the part of GM’s top luxury brand, but just less so in powertrain choices than features on its entry luxury Cadillac XT4 Sport.

AUT O R AC I NG I N THE TIME OF THE PANDEMIC

AUTO RACING IN THE TIME OF THE

PANDEMIC 2020 will go down in history as the year everything was shut down by the global pandemic known as COVID-19. It seems as if every aspect of our lives has been affected by this cataclysmic event – and this includes auto racing. I am writing this at the end of May and this pandemic is far from being played out but we can stop for a moment to reflect on some of the things that have impacted auto racing in the first half of this year.

he last time auto racing was completely shut down was during World War II when everyone’s energies were focused on what was needed fight the war. The automobile industry was turned over to the production of war materials, manpower was diverted to military ends, goods and services were prioritized to the war effort. In that context,

there was no place for auto racing. After the war, as things returned to a new normal, auto racing gradually revived and it has had a more-or-less continuous period of development and growth in all the years since. Early this year, the pandemic swept across the world and auto racing went silent again. This ‘novel corona virus’ was first seen in the city of Wuhan in China in late December. As the disease spread across the world,

the whole of Italy went under quarantine on March 9, the WHO declared the global outbreak a pandemic on March 11, on March 13 governors in NY, California, and other large states were ordering most businesses to close and for people to stay indoors, schools were being closed. The Chinese Grand Prix, set for Shanghai on April 19 was ‘postponed’. By this time, it was obvious that there was a real problem for

NASCAR returned to in-person racing in mid-May, with the requirement that all drivers and crew wear masks.

The American Grand Prix at Watkins Glen was IndyCar's first attempt at a virtual event.

auto racing. There were three big race events scheduled for the weekend of March 15: F1 in Australia, IndyCar in St. Petersburg and NASCAR in Atalanta. In the end none of these three events was held – either ‘cancelled’ or ‘postponed’, We have since learned that ‘postponed’ can turn often into ‘cancelled’ if the event can’t be rescheduled. In addition, race organizers were initially optimistic that this shutdown could be ended soon and a new date for their event found; this has proved to be difficult.

ONCE THESE THREE EVENTS FELL, ESSENTIALLY EVERY EVENT IN THE NEAR FUTURE OF MARCH THROUGH MAY ALSO WERE TAKEN OFF THE CALENDAR. " Once these three events fell, essentially every event in the near future of March through May also were taken off the calendar. So the racing world was shut down. As time

has gone on, events as far ahead as August – the Olympics, Pebble Beach Concours – were being cancelled or postponed. I maintain a calendar of race events for 2020 on the PRN website (prnmag.com/calendar) and I have been doing my best to keep it up to date as race events are cancelled and rescheduled. However, given the rapidly changing status of planned race events, I would urge you to make no firm plans to attend any race event this year. The various series and venue websites are probably the most authoritative source for this information, although even if events are still planned, it's important to remember that the rules are rapidly shifting all over North America. It must be noted that the official F1 website gives no calendar of 2020 race dates at this time, merely listing all the various Grands Prix that were originally scheduled for this year. Of note to Canadians, among the cancelled race dates are the three biggest race events in Canada: Montreal Grand Prix (‘postponed’?), Honda Indy in Toronto and the IMSA WeatherTech at CTMP. Only

the NASCAR truck race, scheduled for early September remains on the calendar for now. This big shutdown had a huge impact. For car racing fans, they had no live races to watch – and sport channels had no live sports event content of any kind. In this vacuum, the car racing computer simulations found a new home. In particular, NASCAR and IndyCar, working with the iRacing SIM, set up a schedule of virtual races with the series’ name drivers and set at virtual versions of familiar race venues, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This proved to be a popular diversion even if it was not the real thing. We soon learned that the skills for driving a real race car were not exactly the same as those for iRacing. Some drivers who have had years of SIM racing experience before coming into real racing – like William Byron, Scott McLaughlin or Charles Leclerc – in general the younger drivers – had a clear skill advantage over other, more established drivers for whom this SIM racing was a new experience. The World of Outlaws has produced some good short track dirt

racing featuring their stars and this has proved to be an engaging virtual series to watch; no doubt this lesser-known style of racing may have introduced many new fans to the real-life version of this racing discipline. It seems like almost every racing series has had its own virtual racing competition on some medium these days. Some have been on broadcast television and many are on various streaming services such as YouTube. Few have been able to attract a full slate of ‘name’ drivers and these other SIMs are mainly populated by computer racing fanatics instead. Lacking the name recognition with their drivers these

other virtual racing series have less popular appeal. This SIM racing became so popular that we saw some weird results. Darrell (‘Bubba’) Wallace wrecked three times and, rather that continue with a ‘damaged’ virtual car laps down he turned off his computer. One of his real car sponsors, Blue-Emu, cancelled their sponsorship of his No. 43 racer completely in retaliation. Kyle Larson forgot that his mike was broadcasting to the world and he glibly uttered an offensive word. While no one was claiming that this was evidence that Larson (who is mixed race JapaneseAmerican) was indeed racist in reality, all his major real car spon-

sors bailed and Chip Ganassi, his car owner, dumped him. Formula E also has its own virtual racing series. Recently, Audi team driver Daniel Abt was busted for engaging a SIM racing expert to act as a ringer and sit in for him in a virtual race competition. Not only was he disqualified and banned from the virtual race series, he has lost his ride with the real Audi FE race team. In IndyCar virtual racing, Simon Pagenaud has come under severe criticism for crashing Lando Norris out of an almost certain ‘win’ in their virtual Indy 500 race. As I write this in late May, there has been a movement to ‘reopen’ for business. Of course, the near

complete shutdown has had a huge effect of every country’s economy and there is a strong argument that business needs to start up again. One has to wonder how big an impact this shutdown will have on professional motorsport – especially F1, which is such an expensive enterprise that, without the steady stream of revenue generated by the series’ race promoters, many teams may go bust. To what extent does the ‘good of the economy’ argument apply to auto racing or sport in general in that they seem to be more-orless trivial entertainment rather that a foundation block of the economy. While these sports

enterprises may not be a large as many production-based industries, ‘entertainment’ including auto racing is a legitimate industry making a significant contribution to a nation’s economy – with a large operation and workforce adding to the GDP. In the case of auto racing, the fact that these economic arguments are often heard from special interest parties, such as a Grand Prix organizer looking for a government handout, may make it harder to convince taxpayers about the reality of the economic impact of this ‘entertainment’ or ‘sport’ enterprise. Of course, most people get it that the Olympics are first-and-

foremost about funding and profits – so too, the other kinds of big-time professional sport. Given the economic impact of the shutdown on auto racing and broadcasting, it is no surprise that – despite some scientists warning that a slower reopening would be better – there is a push to get racing going again sooner rather than later. Already we are seeing NASCAR back in business with a series of seven races over 11 days near the end of May – and a more normal resumption of race dates going into June – albeit still with a ‘no spectator’ regime. NASCAR had its first race after reopening at Darlington on May 17. They have published a tentative calendar for the rest of the season which includes a total of 31 championship race events, declaring a champion at Phoenix as originally planned. Originally IndyCar had planned a 17-race schedule but now it has published a new plan with just 14 race dates. The dates at Barber, Long Beach, COTA, Detroit, Toronto, and Richmond have all been dropped (with a second date added at each of the Indianapolis road course, Road America, Iowa and Road America). The first race (no-spectator) was pencilled in for June 6 at Texas.

IMSA ran its 24-hour race at Daytona before the shutdown but they never got to the next one – the Sebring 12-hour. Originally, the 2020 IMSA schedule had 12 race weekends; it is planning to reopen with a 160-minute race at Daytona on July 4, followed by a 160 minute race at Sebring in slots opened up by the cancellation of the Long Beach, Detroit and CTMP events. In all, they plan to run 11 race weekends including the Sebring 12-hour on November 14. The NASCAR Pinty’s Series has been forced to severely reduce its planned schedule of 13 races. The current published schedule shows just five races as definite with another three listed as ‘postponed’.

I talked to Jessica Menard who handles PR for the Quebecbased Dumoulin competition team which runs two cars – for the brothers Jean-Francois and Louis-Philippe Dumoulin – in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series. She told me, “[The brothers] are affected by the pandemic since they can no longer be on the track and moreover, it is not possible for them to exercise their profession as driving instructors. They do not plan to take part in races in the US. The goal is to be able to do a few races this year in NASCAR Pinty's. We're keeping our fingers crossed. She asked me to mention all their sponsors who have stuck with them thought this hiatus: WeatherTech Canada, Bellemare

Sage Karam won the inaugural IndyCar Iracing event, thanks in part to his vast IRacing experience.

Group, Mobil 1, Canac, TroisRivières Mitsubishi, MIA Bijou, Bernier Crépeau Chrysler Fiat. In addition she handles the PR work for young Rapheal Lessard, whose home is near Quebec City. This year, he has a contract with Kyle Busch to run the No. 4 truck in the full NGROTS series. He is not affected by the complications of border crossings since he had taken up residence in Mooresville, near Charlotte, and he ran in the truck race at the Charlotte speedway, part of the initial flight of NASCAR races in May. Lessard, who is 18 years old, has competed his secondary school education and he is now learning the ropes as a race driver under the tutelage of Toyota.

The limitations on international travel impact some series greatly. There are many ‘international’ participants (drivers, mechanics, etc.) involved in series like IMSA, WEC and, most importantly F1. In the case of F1, nearly all the teams (and their personnel) are based in England and the UK looks set to continue to impose a 14-day quarantine on anyone who enters the country from outside. This would shut down race team operations during that time, requiring a twoweekend quarantine before the next GP could run. So long as this kind of rule continues, it is hard to see F1 getting going again at all this year. Of course, NASCAR with all its people living in the US, is at the opposite end of this question. With the resumption of racing, we will be able to see all/most of these races on broadcast television but it may be a bit harder to keep up with the fluid scheduling of all these races. I recommend that you check out my long-standing George’s Race

Fan TV Listings on the PRNmag. com website (www.prnmag.com/ tv-listings). I usually update these listings mid-week each week but with the many changes to race dates (and hence broadcast dates and times) I have been trying to update the listings every couple of days until things settle into a pattern. With all the enthusiasm for this ‘reopening’ there is a tendency to forget that the COVID-19 is a deadly virus which as spread from country to country around the world and for which there is no effective vaccine. The best estimates predict that it will be a year or two before a vaccine is available, if ever. In the meantime, the only way to control the spread of the virus is to selfisolate, wear masks and keep our distance. Medical experts all say that, in the absence of these measures bring universally adopted, the virus will continue to be active and spread. Right now there a rush to ‘reopen’. Scien-

tists fear that this will produce a second wave of disease later this year that may be even more serious than the first. Already we are seeing a deluge of NASCAR races on television. IndyCar will be back in early June. IMSA in early July and who knows when exactly Formula One will start back up. There still may be a few bumps on the road back to a normal racing season, but if we hang in there, I am optimistic that the ‘entertainment’ will be back and that the bulk of the motorsports industry and its contribution to the economy will be up and running before too long.

ords like unprecedented, life-changing, and epoch-making seem to have lost their meaning as Canadians struggle to come to terms with the abrupt change to our social habits that came into effect in mid March. With a range of “physical distancing orders in place across Canada, we are all being asked to reconsider what our day to day lives look like. Many of us went from a daily commute and conversations around the office fridge to carving out corners of space in our homes for school desks, work files, and video conferencing. Instead of dinner out on a patio, we welcomed the long-awaited spring with backyard cocktails shared over the computer. Flower gardens are being replanted with vegetables and long-abandoned house projects are suddenly being completed.

Amid all the change, many Canadians are wondering what their summer is going to look like - can we go to our cottages? Is it possible to go camping? When can we travel to the lake to get on the water? What precautions do we need to take to allow us to visit with family and friends? With overnight camps cancelled in many parts of Canada and day camps still very much in question, parents with younger children are trying to wrap their heads around a summer with no break from constant snacks, endless meals, and complaints of boredom (despite the closets full of toys!) As Canadians work together to try and avoid a second viral surge, many are considering road trips and travel closer to home. In the US, travel research firm MMGYGlobal (mmgyglobal. com) confirmed that more than 50% of respondents are willing to travel between 400 and 800 km one way to reach their destination. Research also suggests that travellers are more likely to view their car as a safer means of travel, and that they are more likely to stay in their destination for a longer period of time. Generally, travellers are showing an interest in outdoor activities, where spacing is easier. While Canadian data is slow to emerge, it seems a safe guess that Canadian travellers are likewise looking to their vehicles as their primary means of escape. As airlines cut down their schedules, driving becomes the obvious choice. While provinces and territories have different ever-evolving rules in place, there seems little doubt that Canadians are going to be experiencing a summer very different from the one they planned and imagined. With that in mind, we are dedicating the next segment of the issue to exploring how we might be able to make the most of the summer we have. Let’s get rolling!

THE RE-B IRT H OF ROAD T RIPS

Across Canada, the sun is finally shining and it seems Canadians cannot wait to get outside! The BC Parks site crashed within minutes of opening camping reservations and Ontario has few private campgrounds that aren’t entirely sold out. Perhaps our excitement is understandable, as the current research suggests that the safest place to be (other than our own homes) is outside. As Canadians we are lucky to have a vast outdoor all around, full of lakes and trails for us to explore. Unfortunately, that still leaves the complication of getting to the trailhead or boat launch. We also need to prepare and pack differently, as local stores and restaurants are not guaranteed to be open and washroom facilities are limited or closed at most parks. How then can we best access the networks of trails and space, while still being responsible citizens? The easy answer is to be prepared. With careful planning and consideration for local residents we can minimize risk for ourselves and others. In the next segments you’ll find details on how best to pack up, clean, and plan for your road trip, whether you’re just going an hour north for the day or taking off on a crossprovince journey to explore.

If you’re new to exploring trails and waterways, it can be difficult to think of where to begin your search for a suitable day trip. Mapping programs, which are a wonderful resource in cities, can fall flat in more rural regions, with less coverage and unclear or inconsistent labelling. Luckily, each province, and most regions, have tourism sites with specialised maps highlighting their cycling or hiking networks. While many of the amenities listed in the maps (local wineries, rest stops etc) may be temporarily closed, these maps remain the best way to evaluate whether the terrain will suit your group. Another good trick, if you’re cycling, is to check for a local bike shop - they often have the most current information on trails and conditions. Here are some sites to get you started:

CAR

s l a t Ren Perhaps your current vehicle won’t tow the weight you need. Or perhaps your trunk space won’t accommodate much more than a backpack. No matter what the concern, it’s possible that you will be looking at renting a vehicle to make the most of your road trip. If you do rent, there are some points that require consideration.

CANCELLATION POLICIES

Take a careful look at the cancellation policy of the company you choose to rent from. With everchanging restrictions and the possibility of regional shut-downs, you’ll want peace of mind about how and when you can cancel. Make sure to note the last date for cancellation in your calendar and be sure to double-check current rules before confirming your booking.

CLEANING POLICIES

While we would suggest you aggressively clean any vehicle you rent, it’s also a good idea to check what the rental agency is doing to ensure that cars are cleaned between users. Are vehicles sitting empty for a set number of days? Are they using a disinfectant mist between rentals? When you pick up the vehicle, be sure to confirm that all the advertised cleansing steps were taken.

CALL THE LOCATION TO CONFIRM HOURS/AVAILABILITY

Most rental agencies are working hard to keep their website as current as possible, but it’s still a good idea to call the pick up location to confirm timing before you head over. It’s also wise to double check that the vehicle they are holding for you is exactly what you requested. This is especially important if you have reserved something with the goal of hauling or towing something - it would be very frustrating to arrive only to find out that a “comparable” vehicle is the only option and that it won’t be able to fit the canoe rack.

CLEANING

Clean the inside of your windshield, to prevent glare at night

Our cars have become even more important during this challenging time. With space at a premium, and many of us in tight quarters with loved ones, our vehicles have become sanctuaries. Safe spaces to get away for a minute, a way to see the world from a distance, and a good place for a conference call. However, we need to be mindful of the many surfaces in our car and their potential for transmission. This is especially important if you are transporting someone from outside your household. To that end, it’s a good idea to clean your vehicle as often as you clean your home. Not only will you reduce your risk, you’ll be better prepared to get going on your next adventure. Here’s how to get started:

Dust the dashboard and other areas

Vacuum the leaves, sand etc

Remove all garbage, and dispose of it at home Take a quick look around your vehicle - check that your windshield wipers are in good shape and remove any leaves or twigs from the wiper wells.

Wipe down all touch surfaces with a disinfectant wipe - steering wheel, gear shifts, on buttons, radio controls, all of it. It’s a good idea to test the wipe somewhere inconspicuous first, to make sure it won’t bleach or otherwise discolour your vehicle’s finishes.

PEST-EATEN WIRES - FACT OR FICTION?

It seems that stories of wires being chewed through are circulating regularly and they may be making you wonder if there is any truth to them and if there is something you should be doing to protect your vehicle. The simple answer is that cars’ wires are indeed a favourite chewing target for squirrels and other animals. While the reason for the chewing isn’t certain, most experts think it is linked to the soy byproducts used in wire casing, which can give off a “food scent” when the vehicle is warm. What then can you do to avoid the potential damage? The Canadian Wildlife Federation suggests applying a deterrent spray, such as bitter apple. Available at pet stores and veterinary clinics, they can help make your vehicle less appealing to critters. Another good idea, if you park in a garage, is to check for small gaps and fill them. If you park outside, try to keep the area around your vehicle clear of shrubs and tall grass. Finally, some experts suggest that driving your car regularly can help discourage critters from nesting.

GEAR TO CARRY sions,

i v o r p , s ) k t s e l a i o m t ( anitizer, s

In addition to the gear your family normally stows in the car, there are some items you’ll need to minimize your risk this summer. While this list is not exhaustive, it represents a good starting point. Before you leave home, check to make sure you’ve brought:

FACE MASKS FOR YOUR WHOLE FAMILY If you are using disposable masks, confirm you have enough for the duration of your trip. If you are using cloth masks, take an extra set in case someone misplaces theirs or it becomes dirty. Remember, current federal guidelines ask Canadians to wear a face covering when in spaces that don’t allow enough physical distance. In other words, you don’t need to wear a mask in your vehicle with your family, but you should wear a mask when going into the local bakery. Remember that wearing a mask is an act of kindness to the people around you, or serving you.

SANITIZING WIPES These remain a bit tricky to track down, but if you have a stock of wipes, keeping some in your vehicle and cooler is a good idea. This will allow you to wipe down items like your cellphone and door handles with ease.

WELLSTOCKED COOLER It’s gearing up to be a warm summer and it’s important to make sure your family has a well stocked cooler with ample water and snacks even if you are just going on a day drive. By bringing your own provisions you minimize your chance of exposure and also reduce the risk for the local residents. While it would be lovely to sit on a local patio and soak in the sunshine, having a properly packed cooler and a picnic blanket make it easier to be sure you are following public health guidelines and respecting the community you are visiting.

HAND SANITIZER

Mercifully, it has become easier to find waterless hand sanitizer. Make sure you have some handy in the vehicle, so you can clean your hands as soon as you get back in. Also stow some in your day bag and cooler so you can clean everyone’s hands before they eat.

PORTABLE POTTY

This is (obviously) not an item we would normally include on a road trip packing list. However, with many washroom facilities closed and trailheads several hours from the city, it might be a life saver. Another option would be to carry adultsized diapers, or a roll of toilet paper and a towel to create a semblance of privacy.

TOWING BEST With the closure of most in-park amenities, there is an increased call for bringing what you need for your adventure with you. By the time you’ve added the kayaks, SUPs, bikes and coolers to your vehicle you may find you’re out of room for passengers. Before rushing out to grab a trailer hitch, you’ll want to take the time to better understand your vehicle's towing restrictions and the rules for towing in your jurisdiction.

1

CHECK YOUR MANUAL

Every vehicle has a maximum towing capacity and going above it can cause serious damage. Your first step should be to find your manual and read the specifics for your vehicle. If you have a smaller SUV or sedan, you’ll likely find that you are restricted to a very low weight - likely about the weight of a small UHaul trailer. Even on vehicles with higher towing capacities, you often need to have a towing package installed before you can attach a larger item. Towing packages often include items like increased cooling and weight distribution, so don’t be tempted to simply assume that a hitch is all you are missing.

40

2

CONSIDER THE PAYLOAD RATING

A vehicle’s payload is the maximum allowable weight for the passengers and cargo combined. You’ll find the information on the sticker in the door jam of the driver’s side. Knowing the vehicle’s payload capacity will let you calculate the maximum hitch or pin weight you can support. As a general rule, a trailer puts 10% of its weight on the hitch, so you’ll want to add that weight to the weight of your normal passengers and cargo to be sure you are still within the vehicle’s allowances.

3

LOOK INTO A WEIGHT DISTRIBUTING HITCH

Each axle has a maximum weight, which can be easily overloaded between hitch weight, passengers, and gear. To avoid putting undue strain on your vehicle, you might want to consider a weight distribution hitch. These hitches, which range in price from $300 to over a thousand dollars, help even out the load on each axle. These hitches can also make it safer to tow, allowing for some peace of mind in inclement weather or rough road conditions.

4

RESEARCH THE REGULATIONS IN YOUR JURISDICTION

The rules for licensing a trailer vary by province. In Ontario, for example, trailers must be registered and have a valid plate, although unlike vehicles, the plate does not need to be renewed each year. While the process for registering the trailer likely won’t take long, it’s a good idea to check with your provincial website first to be sure you have all the correct paperwork at hand.

5

CONSIDER AFTER-MARKET ADD ONS

Not surprisingly, there are many accessories available for trailers - everything from back up cameras, extended mirror kits, outdoor lighting. It is a good idea to use your trailer before starting to buy add ons, to be sure they are something you would use. However, safety related additions, like back up cameras or hitch cameras, should be installed before you go on your first longer trek.

TRAILER Owning a trailer requires a lot more than simply buying a trailer - between the tow vehicle, the licensing, the hitch, storage, and yearly maintenance, it is a large commitment. Luckily, there are a growing number of trailer rental companies across Canada. Many of the newer app-based companies allow you to connect directly with owners who are looking to rent out their trailer to offset their payments (much like cottage rentals). The rental options are almost limitless. For renters who

are interested in moving from region to region there are RV buses, for those who prefer to stay in one location trailers are a good choice. One advantage to renting a trailer is that you don’t need to consider the weight restrictions of your vehicle. Many rental companies will deliver the unit to your destination and all you need to do is show up and start exploring. Of course, with a rental you’ll want to build in time to disinfect the interior, just as you would a hotel room or rental car.

There are trailer rental companies across the country. Many dealerships offer rental options, which can be a good choice if you are looking for something as close to factory standard as possible. If you don’t mind a unit with some personalization, going through an owner-share system might be a better choice. Here are some places to get started:

RVEZY This Canadian site is ownerdriven with individuals placing their trailers up for rentals up to several weeks long. Many will deliver, and some allow pets. Be sure to check for flexible dates and cancellation policies.

CRUISE CANADA This fleet is maintained by the company and is designed for shorter rentals.

GORVING.CA This portal allows you to connect directly with local dealers who have rental stock. They also have listings for RV Vacation rentals at campgrounds around the country. These rentals, which are a lot more like cottages, are a good choice if you’re sure about the location you’re looking for and you are comfortable with the park.

There are campgrounds across the country, ranging from private family-run acreages to provincial and national parks. Currently only some provinces are allowing camping reservations, and there is no guarantee that the sites will be open this season. With the complication of shared washrooms and showers (not to mention water taps), physical distancing can be a challenge even in the relative wilderness. If tent camping is allowed to go ahead, it would offer a relatively inexpensive way to escape the city. Here are some tips to get you ready.

RESERVE YOUR SITE AHEAD OF TIME

BUY FIREWOOD AT YOUR DESTINATION

Many popular parks book up as soon as their reservation window opens so if you’re hoping to stay somewhere like Ontario hot-spots Sandbanks or Pinery Provincial Parks be sure to lock in your site as early as possible.

The best way to prevent tree disease from spreading from region to region is to always buy your firewood where you are camping, preferably at the park itself. You may, however, want to bring your firestarter kit (paper, natural fire sticks) with you so you have some confidence you can get the fire going.

THINK ABOUT YOUR TRUNK SPACE REALISTICALLY It’s easy to create a long list of gear you want to bring camping kayaks, a canoe, airbeds, tents, the list never ends. What is finite is your cargo space. Take a careful look at what you have at your disposal before you decide you want to pack in a coleman stove, plus a portable BBQ.

42

MAKE A MEAL PLAN

PACK AN AXE

Much like truck space, cooler space is limited. It doesn’t take much to fill a cooler - between the milk, eggs, and beer you might be full already. Be sure you make a meal plan so you can think about how you are going to keep your food safe. After all, you don’t want to spend the weekend at the comfort station because you thought the hot dogs would be ok after they spent the night out of the cooler.

One of the most frequently forgotten items is an axe. Even if you pack just a small one, you’ll be glad you did when you are trying to break down the giant pieces of wood to get your fire going.

BE TICK AWARE No conversation about camping is complete without a reminder that ticks are an increasing problem all over Canada. In some parts of Ontario, health authorities don’t even check for lyme disease anymore, they simply treat people with the protocol. Make sure you check yourself and your party (including animals) carefully and regularly.

PACKING OUT A One of the challenges of a road trip is the packing. In a normal summer, it is hard to anticipate everything you’ll need and organize the trunk efficiently. With the added complication of trying to avoid stores along the way, the pressure to have everything to hand is extreme. To help get you going in the right direction, we’ve created a checklist and some reminder notes.

3 1 MEASURE YOUR TRUNK Take a careful look at how much room you have. Are you planning to fold down the seats? Do you have to carry a stroller? Does your car seat have to stay in the middle making it impossible to use the pass through? Be realistic about what you are going to leave in the trunk and measure how much space you’ll have left.

2 MAKE A LIST This will likely take several drafts to get right - start by writing down everything you know you need to make things run smoothly for your family. Do you need to pack a crib? Does your older child need space for a bike helmet? Are golf clubs mandatory? Try to start with the gear and then work your way down to clothes and cosmetics. Normally forgetting the sunscreen isn’t a huge issue, but with regional mayors requesting visitors not travel to local stores you’ll want to be sure to have extra on hand. Once you have your “normal” gear list edited, begin a list for the activity you are planning to try. Do you have straps for the kayak? Everyone’s life vest? A pump for the bike tires? Try to imagine likely scenarios and have a plan in place to be sure you are ready for the unexpected.

44

EDIT DOWN There’s a good chance your gear lists far outstrip the space available in your vehicle. You have a couple of choices - installing a new hitch and towing a gear trailer, investing in a rooftop gear box, or editing your requirements. If road trips are something your family enjoys, the first two options are a good idea - just be aware that orders are slow to arrive so it may take a while to get started. If you are hoping to return to air travel next summer, try to edit your list. Do you really need 10 shorts? Can your son survive with only two pairs of shoes?

4 PACK IT UP FOR A TEST The time to check you can actually fit in/ attach all your gear is not the morning you are planning to leave. Take the time to get everything ready in advance and try to put it all in place. Once you’ve got everything in, have your planned passengers climb in as well. Be sure everything is secure and that you aren’t setting yourself up for complaints about coolers in leg space for hours on end.

Trip Tips BY IGNITION STAFF

L

ike thousands of Canadian motorists, you want to be as prepared as possible for safe, confident and comfortable travels with family and friends this summer. To help keep you and yours motoring with maximum peace of mind, consider the following checklist of five important items to keep handy in your ride.

SUMMER TRAVEL UP FRONT CHECKLIST

Consider keeping these five items handy while travelling this summer

1

PORTABLE POWER

There are many external battery options that can store power for months, and fits easily in your glove-box. Able to boost multiple dead car, boat or ATV batteries, and to recharge Smartphones and portable electronics, a portable power pack offers big peace of mind in a small package. And don’t forget to toss a few extra USB charging cords into your ride, just in case.

48 46

2

QUALITY DRIVING GLASSES

A set of quality driving glasses can work wonders for safety and comfort on the move. A set from a reputable brand with quality polarized lenses will reduce eye strain, increase comfort, and improve vision quality in all conditions. If you're anything like us, having a less expensive back up pair is a good idea as well for when your good ones are in the other car

3

CLIF BARS

Skip the double-decker burger if you’re at the wheel for the long haul. When you’re sitting for extended periods, slow-digesting carbs and nutritionally-rich food are the name of the game for maintaining blood-sugar levels, energy levels, and alertness. A Clif bar, or a similar slow-digesting snack that’s high in protein and fiber, is ideal. Greasy, fatty foods are not.

4

EMERGENCY KIT

Bought pre-made, or created by stuffing a small plastic container with foil blankets, candles, snacks, batteries, a flashlight and some basic medical supplies, an emergency kit can be a real life-saver if an issue presents itself on the road.

5

PET MEDS

Travelling with the family pet is a reality for many Canadian drivers. Be sure to remember their needs: water, food, and especially, medication, if applicable. After all: pets make better travel companions when they’re healthy and comfortable.

NEED A ZIP CODE? We’ve all been at that isolated gas station in Pennsylvania late at night, trying to pay at the pump, when it asks for the Zip code for the card. Here’s a workaround you might not know:

1

TAKE THE NUMBERS FROM YOUR POSTAL CODE

—#—#—#

PRE ROAD-TRIP MAINTENANCE CHECKS Our quick checks can help ensure your ride is ready for summer travels with minimal time

2

CABIN AIR FILTER Like all filters, your ride’s cabin air filter needs periodic replacement as it gets clogged with trapped contaminants. Your owner’s manual outlines the replacement procedure, which is typically quick, painless, and requires no tools. Remember that a clogged air filter can wreak havoc with proper defroster operation, and can drastically degrade air conditioner performance, too.

###00 PROBLEM SOLVED!

BATTERY TERMINALS

Few things provide confidence during family voyages like knowing your ride is ready to handle the job with maximum safety and efficiency. Before your long-distance travels, consider our maintenance checklist to quickly confirm that your ride is tip-top, and ready to tackle the season ahead.

TYPE THEM ALL TOGETHER AND ADD TWO ZEROS

A common cause of vehicle electrical problems is a simple buildup of dirt and salt around the battery terminals. Cleaning these terminals takes mere moments with a wire-brush, and can help prevent frustrating electronics system problems.

TRAVEL INSURANCE While you are likely not heading across the border this summer, it's still important to consider insurance and restrictions as you leave your home area. Take a minute to check in with your travel insurance provider and confirm you are covered in the event you end up needing hospitalization in another province.

FLUIDS

SUMMERIZE IT

Break out your owner’s manual, and find out how to check your fluids. Engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid can typically be checked for proper level and condition in just a few minutes. If your ride is rear-wheel drive, or an AWD or 4x4, it has additional fluids that can be assessed by a mechanic. Remember that virtually all fluids in your ride require periodic attention and replacement for maximum durability and efficiency.

The procrastinators among us may still have winter tires and wipers installed, even though the cold weather is long gone. Winter tires wear out fast when used in summer, and may provide reduced handling and braking performance. Winter wiper blades may lift away from your windshield at higher summer cruising speeds, affecting visibility. Translation? If you haven’t already, get the winter tires and wipers off of your ride.

THE CIRCLE CHECK

With a simple circle check, you can confirm proper lighting system operation, tire condition, fluid levels, visibility, and more. Pop the hood, and check all fluid levels, including washer fluid. Then walk around your ride, confirming each tire is properly inflated, and free of excessive tread wear or any bubbling or tearing in the sidewall, which will require attention. Confirm all lights work as required, that all glass is clean, and that your license plates are visible and illuminated.

or many residents of Southern Ontario, Muskoka is the gateway to the North. Dotted with countless lakes, rocky outcrops, windswept pines, and big skies Muskoka is a welcome reprieve from the business of the city.

As we enter a summer like no other, it is also an ideal place to escape the confinement of city parks and busy streets. With all of Muskoka in Stage 2 of opening, there are also many opportunities to explore, with river adventures, camping, patios, and retail open for business. Before loading up the car with an overnight bag and dreams of a sunny patio, there are some points to consider. First, take the time to consider what you are hoping to explore in Muskoka - are you primarily going to get active and outside, or are you looking for a brewery with a great patio? Will you be spending the night (or week) or are you trying to stick to a day trip to minimize your potential exposure? Are you comfortable

Planning your route

There are several secondary highways that enter into the Muskoka region and thanks to the roads detouring around lakes, there are few very direct routes. Before beginning your drive be sure to check your favourite mapping app, to avoid being stuck on Hwy 11 while planned road work might be wrecking traffic havoc. Don’t forget to fill up on gas and check your tire pressure before you head out - there are few things as stressful as being stuck in 400-traffic while your car is on fumes!

Outdoor Outfitters

Muskoka is known as a paddler’s paradise, with pristine lakes and rivers and many well-established canoe routes to explore. If you are bringing your own canoe or kayak, there are many public boat launches dotted around the region (muskokalakes. ca/en/recreation/docks-and-boatlaunches.aspx#Lake-Muskoka) If you’re looking to rent a canoe or motor boat, you will need to plan ahead. Many outfitters are not offering single day rentals at this time, making researching and reserving ahead all the more important. Here are some of the options if you’re looking to rent a watercraft (or in some cases a bike!) Several of these outfitters also offer guided tours, which is one way to avoid short rental restrictions.

eating in restaurants or would you prefer to look at rental units with kitchens? Once you’ve narrowed down your goals for the trip, you should spend some serious time planning and researching the current operating procedures of the places you would like to visit. Ontario recently removed the restriction on short term rentals, so AirBnBs are now able to welcome visitors again. If you are looking for a longer rental, you may well find yourself looking further afield then normal, as many cottages were booked for month-long stays when the province was still shut down. One option to keep in mind if you are planning a weekend getaway are suite-style hotels or cottage resorts. Both often include a kitchenette, allowing you access to your own refrigerator and a place to prepare simple meals. This can be especially helpful if you are not comfortable eating-in at a restaurant. However, you’ll want to remember to thoroughly clean the kitchen area when you arrive.

Public Beaches and Boat Launches

The Muskoka region has a surprising number of public beaches that offer parking and washrooms without the crowds associated with places like Wasaga. Many have adjacent boat launches that allow you to get right out onto the big lakes. Before heading over, be sure to check for municipal updates. Below are some well rated options.

Bowyer’s Beach Park

This beach has public washrooms and picnic tables.

Kirby’s Beach Park

This shallow entry beach has lovely sand and public washrooms - just be aware the parking lot fills up fast.

Weismuller Lake

This beach has a raft you can swim to, but no washrooms.

Jaspen Park

This park has a beach, washrooms, and a pavilion (and is close to Don’s Bakery if you need a treat!)

After confirming your accommodations, you can begin to consider what activities you would like to explore. Muskoka has a wide range of outdoor tour operators and you can (with a bit of pre-planning) rent just about any type of watercraft to explore the pristine waterways. Be sure to check for restrictions on minimum days or length of rentals and any extras you may need to buy. If you’re planning to rent a power boat, be sure you have all the information you’ll need in hand

If you’re imagining bombing around on a PWC, you should also look at restrictions on the lake you’re exploring. Many have rules about speed and wake, to limit noise and make swimming more enjoyable. While some rental companies will provide a map for a “self-guided tour” you may want to research public boat launches and any potential current closures. Another great option if you are looking to get into nature is hiking. There are no shortage of trails throughout the region, in municipal conservation areas and provincial parks. With trails ranging from leisurely strolls to treks straight up rocky outcrops, there’s something for everyone in your group. One of the most popular is the trail to Huckleberry Rock, which is a natural outlook that provides a gorgeous sunset view. With free parking, and a clearly marked trail, it’s a special way to end the day.

52

If you do decide a hike is in your future, you’ll want to confirm what facilities are open at your destination before heading out - although provincial parks have opened up, there are still many restrictions, which in some cases mean there are no washroom facilities or parking is extremely limited.

Local Breweries Sawdust City Brewing Company

The brewery has a large outdoor patio that has reopened and a wide selection of beer including some that are only available directly at the brewery.

Muskoka Brewery

This stalwart offers a large patio and a number of taps that are only available at the brewery. Keep in mind that the patio is mostly in the sun, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Quayle’s Brewery

This farm-to-glass operation grows their own hops and prides themselves on a constantly changing draft list.

If a patio is more your speed, there is no shortage to choose from. With new craft breweries opening regularly and many old stand-bys expanding their offerings, you could spend a weekend exploring the various

offerings of local beer (although you would absolutely need a designated driver!) Before plotting your beer crawl, be sure to check for adjusted hours and operating procedures. While many locations have expansive patios (some with beautiful views), it is still a good idea to try and secure a reservation if you are hoping to visit during a busy time as capacity is limited. Finally, remember to respect the rules and treat the places you visit with care. In this summer of change, bringing your gear with you, planning ahead, and packing your patience are more important than ever before.

Canvas Brewing Company Although the inside of the tap room remains closed, the patio (with partial water view) has recently re-opened at this newcomer to the Huntsville scene.

Clear Lake Brewing Co This newer brewery has a patio and in addition to a wide range of beer, offers a selection of local food favourites.

L

ike a shimmering mirage, for many Canadians Vancouver is a standout oasis, a unique mix of temperate climate and big-city amenities. With looming mountains in the distance and ample parks and bike lanes, Vancouver has a reputation for being a picturesque and welcoming city. With current travel restrictions, you may be looking at Canadian destinations to replace planned European or North American travel this summer. If so, Vancouver might be just what you are looking for. Before booking your travel, however, please be sure to check current restrictions - BC is gradually reopening, but is still requesting that visitors limit their travel this Spring. The province is not currently asking Canadian visitors to quarantine on arrival, but that may change as the summer progresses.

54

Although most of Vancouver’s top attractions are currently closed, there are still many ways to experience the city, given the large number of outdoor attractions. Museums and other attractions are scheduled BC Place

to begin a phased reopening in June, although (of course) plans continue to evolve. If you’re visiting Vancouver for the first time, a good place to start would be a garden tour - between the UBC Botanical Gardens, Stanley Park, and the Granville Islands there’s lots of natural beauty to keep you engaged. There are many small tour operators who are continuing to offer tours with limited numbers of guests and reduced time slots. In addition many are offering very generous cancellation policies, to encourage bookings in this period of uncertainty.

interests. This is an especially good idea at the moment, as a small tour allows you to control the “social bubble” you’ll be spending the day with and also avoids mass transit which can be more difficult to clean. If you do decide to use a small tour operator, you can begin a dialogue ahead of time about what safety precautions you are most comfortable with and you can take pleasure in knowing you are supporting a local tourism professional (an industry that has been severely affected by the new reality.)

Olympic Village

If you’re going to be exploring on your own, your first stop should likely be Stanley Park. Long renowned as an urban oasis, this 400-hectare park is one of Vancouver’s most popular destinations. First opened in 1888, the park’s pavilion and concert bowl have drawn countless visitors eager to embrace summer events over the years. The park is comprised of several zones, including beaches, gardens, and landmark sculptures. Although guests cannot currently drive into the park, the city bus is still running and the park is open to cyclists

and pedestrians. The Vancouver aquarium, which is normally a highlight of the park, is temporarily closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try your hand at whale watching from the beach (and the aquarium is also posting a free live-stream if you’d still like to see the penguins). Once you’ve had your fill of Stanley Park, you may want to consider a day trip to Vancouver Island or a road trip up the Sea to Sky highway. Many small tour operators are happy to bring small groups over for the day and customize a tour itinerary to suit their

From Sea to Sky

Travellers to Canada’s Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast know just how well nature and modern infrastructure can co-exist. The West Coast embraces its surroundings, and does well to incorporate its beauty into daily life. Nowhere is that more evident than driving the Sea-to-Sky Highway – or more technically, Highway 99. It’s hard not to feel equally in awe and insignificant amongst the immense mountain ranges as you drive with the Pacific Ocean and Squamish River at the road’s edge.

Where to stay?

As a large, year-round tourist hotspot, there are plenty of accommodations at the major stopping points along the highway. Assuming most people will be starting their trip from Vancouver, here are some well-recommended accommodations northward. All properties have introduced new safety protocols to ensure guest experiences are as safe as possible, with everything from enhanced cleaning and altered amenities to staff re-training and newly-added room service options. Many are also offering flexible cancellations and summer savings to encourage bookings.

How to get there?

The Sea-to-Sky Highway is how you get there, so it’s more about where you’re going to. Highway 99 is 409 kilometres from end to end, but it’s where it meets up with Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver and into the Squamish River where this drive really begins to show its charm. The main, most direct and easily most scenic route from Vancouver to Whistler (and beyond), it’s simply gorgeous and made for pure enjoyment.

56

Nita Lake Lodge (Whistler)

Located not far from the Olympic athlete’s village, I can attest to the quality of food, service and amenities that reviewers rave about. Backing on to a picturesque setting of the lake after which it’s named, each of the 77 rooms (from $239 a night) are finished in stone and slate, glass, and wood trims and warm finishes reminiscent of the Northwest Coast, with a king-sized bed and gas fireplace to keep things warm and cozy all year, whether you’re biking, hiking, skiing or enjoying a good read.

Legends Whistler (CREEKSIDE)

Up to three-bedroom suites, this is a ski-out, ski-in hotel located at the base of Whistler Creekside. It offers quick access to the Creekside Gondola and excellent shopping and dining experiences with fewer crowds than the main Whistler Village. Legends’ fine dining and casual eateries are complemented by those in the surrounding area. Rates average from $175 per couple (one bedroom) to $370 (three bedroom), with activity and travel packages.

Cedar Springs Bed and Breakfast Lodge (WHISTLER)

This highly-recommended BnB is for those wanting a comfortable, home-like base for their adventures without spending their budget on accommodations. Eight rooms with a West Coast feel range from the single twin-bed room (with shared bath) to kings and double-queens with two twin rooms (and private bath) – perfect for the travelling family. Hot tub, guest living room and concierge service for activity booking/complimentary shuttle services. Rates from $125 to $259 per couple in high season.

Whistler

Currently, the Sea to Sky Gondola is open, with reduced hours and new safety protocols to allow for additional distancing. The gondola, which serves as a gateway to a larger park and trail system, is approximately $50 per adult for a round trip. You may be able to save a little by buying your ticket ahead of your visit, and there are family discounts for groups of four. If you’re feeling especially adventurous you can hike up to the summit

area and pay a greatly reduced rate to ride down (about $15). Although the cafe at the summit remains closed, there is lots to see and do as part of your visit. With walking trails, the Sky Pilot suspension bridge and viewing platforms, you can safely get outside and experience the beauty of the BC coastal region. Finally, as with all travel this summer, be sure to take the time to get in touch with the various attractions and tour providers you are planning to visit prior to your arrival. Keep in mind that regulations and recommendations are shifting rapidly and try to be as considerate and prepared as possible. Being flexible with dates and times will make your travel easier and more relaxing for everyone involved. If you are lucky enough to visit the Vancouver region this summer, take the time to explore the beautiful outdoors and remember to be kind to those helping make your experiences possible.

Q

uebec City has long been considered one of the most romantic destinations in North America. With 400-plus years of history, a charming old world city centre, and a seemingly endless array of bistros, there is never a shortage of picture-worthy vistas. While travel to Quebec City will be different this summer, there are many parts of the city and region that remain accessible and inspiring.

St. Lawrence River

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Quebec City’s old city centre is the most intact fortified city north of Mexico. Complete with walls and ramparts, the cobblestone streets wander in twisted paths towards the harbour. In this, the birthplace of French North America, visitors can experience fresh air art markets and unique storefronts that open onto the narrow streets. Although the region’s festivals and events remain on hold (gatherings of more than 10 people are not allowed) many attractions are beginning to open to visitors including museums and national parks.

One of the region’s national parks is a must-see for all Canadians - the Plains of Abraham. As most of us remember from our grade-school history classes, the Plains of Abraham are where the fates of British and French North America were decided. The (in) famous battle between Wolfe and Montcalm is now the site of a national park, complete with a full museum, nature trails, sweeping views of the St. Lawrence river, and (normally) costumed interpreters. This

summer, the museum will be open as of the end of June, and guests are already welcome to explore the large open spaces. While you’re exploring Canada’s military history, you may also want to stop by the Citadelle de Quebec. Built between 1820 and 1850, the Citadelle is the largest British fortress in North America and remains an active garrison today. Perched

atop the highest point in the city, the fortress normally includes a changing of the guard ceremony as part of admission. Although the museum and guided tours are not currently available, the site is expected to open at the end of June. As you return to the maze of narrow streets within the old city walls, you may find yourself at Petit Champlain, a pedestrian-only street full of galleries and restaurants. Although restaurants are not

currently permitted patios, they are offering take away, so you can grab something delicious and take it off to enjoy picnic style at any number of scenic vistas in the neighbourhood. Before you finish up with the old city, be sure to check on the Basilica and the Place Royale, both of which have beautiful interiors and hundreds of years of history to share. Once you’ve explored the heart of the old city, you may want to take advantage of the beautiful countryside within an hour’s drive of the city. A good place to start is Montmorency Falls. Located only fifteen minutes from the city, the falls are home to a number of attractions, including a cable car, suspension bridge, and double zip lines. The falls themselves are 83 m tall (which is a bit taller than Niagara Falls) and guests are able to climb up the adjacent 487 stairs if they are feeling adventurous. Also close by is the Jacques-Cartier National Park, a glacier valley full of rivers

and trails, where guests can hike, canoe and kayak with plenty of physical space around them. If you are up for another short drive Ile des Orleans is an enchanting place to explore. Accessible via bridge, a visit to the island is often described as stepping back into historic New France. The agriculture-rich island has historic shipyards and a wide array of local producers, including wineries, cideries, and small-batch cheese and dairy. Many of the structures date back to the mid-1800s and have been lovingly restored to showcase the rich history of the region. While you could easily spend a weekend exploring the various farms and

regions, it’s also an easy day trip from Quebec City, minimizing your need to switch hotels. There are many other local attractions to explore depending on what interests your group - from theme parks, to hiking trails, to museums, the region has a wealth of options. More than ever, it is best to call ahead to confirm the hours and operational procedures for places you plan to visit - being prepared can save you untold frustration. As you explore this beautiful and culturally vital part of Canada, be sure to take the time to reflect on how lucky we are as Canadians to have such cultural and agricultural wealth in our own backyard.
