Dear INDYCAR Fans, Welcome to this weekend’s Honda Indy 200 at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, a traditional and fan-favorite race on the 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES schedule. INDYCAR is committed to delivering a comprehensive fan experience through outstanding entertainment and competition as our athletes defy all obstacles presented by Mid Ohio’s challenging 2.4-mile road course. Whether this is your first INDYCAR race or you have been attending races for years, we are excited for you to witness the spectacle of the sport. This weekend has a vibe like few others and is a destination event, so we urge you to take in as much as possible and enjoy it all. INDYCAR has the most diverse lineup of tracks in motorsports, with superspeedways, short ovals, permanent road courses and temporary street circuits. The collection makes for a true proving ground as elite athletes compete for the most challenging championship in motorsports. The car used this weekend is one of a kind, featuring a sleek look with the most advanced safety components available. Honda and Chevrolet provide the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engines, and no tire manufacturer can match Firestone for reliability and competitiveness. You likely will notice INDYCAR’s revolutionary driver-protection Aeroscreen that debuted on all cars in 2020. The look of these cars is reminiscent of INDYCAR SERIES favorites of the 1980s and ‘90s, and driver skill is paramount as the low-downforce machines slip and slide on this challenging road course. Trust me when I say you will be able to see how hard the drivers must work to achieve maximum speed. You should find that INDYCAR offers some of the most daring and defiant athletes in sport, including six-time and reigning series champion Scott Dixon. While at this beautiful facility, we invite you to download the INDYCAR Mobile app powered by NTT DATA on your smartphone to get behind-the-scenes driver features, live timing and scoring, in-car cameras and more information to help you follow the action. Also, follow the NTT INDYCAR SERIES online at INDYCAR.com, on Facebook and on Twitter (@INDYCAR). Thank you for your continued support. INDYCAR appreciates your attendance this weekend. We are glad you can experience the speed, action and excitement that defines the series. Enjoy the weekend!

Dear Honda Race Fan, Welcome to another action-packed weekend of racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, highlighted by Sunday’s Honda Indy 200, featuring the cars and drivers of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this past year a challenging one for everyone, and we truly appreciate your continued support for Indy car racing and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Through continuing to race and entertaining our loyal fans we can play a small part in trying to get back to normal. This weekend’s race will feature many of the most talented racers from around the world fighting for both race victories and the series championship. Honda has won four of the first six races this year – including our 14th triumph at the Indianapolis 500 with Helio’s epic 4th Indy 500 Victory. The INDYCAR Manufacturers championship is on a knife-edge, the team at Honda Performance Development (HPD) are working hard with our race teams to try and extend our consecutive INDYCAR Manufacturers’ titles to four in 2021. Honda-powered drivers to watch this weekend include Colton Herta, winner on Sunday in last year’s double-header race weekend; and defending, six-time series champion and five-time Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon. Other Honda star drivers include Formula One veteran Romain Grosjean; seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson; Columbus native and 2015 Mid-Ohio winner Graham Rahal; former series and Indianapolis 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay; the popular James Hinchcliffe and Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi; two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Takuma Sato; and rising stars Alex Palou and Jack Harvey – the latter driving for Ohio-based Meyer Shank Racing, fresh off their stunning Indy 500 win. Since 1994, Honda has been synonymous with success in Indy car racing. For the past 25 years, no other manufacturer has won as many races and championships in both Championship Auto Racing Teams and IndyCar competition. In CART, Honda won four manufacturers’ championships in a nine-year period against competition from Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. In IndyCar, Honda has won the last three INDYCAR Manufacturers’ Championships and an unmatched 14 Indianapolis 500s since 2004. We hope you enjoy the races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, one of the most beautiful road racing facilities in North America, where American Honda has had a relationship that dates to 1994. Have a great weekend!

t 24, the young driver from Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, Spain, is already a race winner after driving his No. 10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to victory in the season-opening Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Even for those who did not know Palou before this past Memorial Day Weekend, a world-wide audience witnessed his tenacious ability and savvy that nearly won him the 105th Indianapolis 500. Palou led 35 tours of the 200-lap race, and was in the lead when fellow Honda driver Helio Castroneves passed him with just two laps remaining in the race. Castroneves’ No. 06 Meyer-Shank Racing Honda went on to defeat Palou by just 0.483 to become just the fourth four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and the first to accomplish since Rick Mears in 1991. “To be honest, I was sad and a bit down the first three minutes when I jumped out of the car, but then I realized I was in the Indy 500 driving for Chip Ganassi Racing and I was second,” Palou recalled. “There was only one person who was prouder and happier than

me and that was Helio Castroneves, who worked so hard for this race. And it was an awesome battle to be honest. We kept fighting until the end and demonstrated we are capable of it, but he was a bit braver this time. “It was his day.” As the summer months began, Palou left the Indianapolis Motor Speedway leading the NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings with a 36-point margin over teammate Scott Dixon. Three races later, Palou is ready to continue that battle for the title in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio in a “Fourth of July Weekend” celebration of speed. “Since the beginning of the season, the No. 10 NTT DATA car has been super good,” Palou said. “We are trying to keep improving and doing the best we can. We had continuous podiums at Indy road course and Indy 500 and won the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at the start of the season so we are off to a great start.” Last year, as a rookie driving for Dale Coyne Racing with Team GOH, Palou finished 12th and 23rd in a September doubleheader at Mid-Ohio. But he is confident his return in 2021 will see him running at the front. “That’s the goal,” Palou said. “We will have some courses and races where I will be super strong like Road America and Mid-Ohio. We will fight with Scott Dixon all
the way to the end and hopefully a Chip Ganassi Racing car will be the winner.” While America was getting to know Alex Palou in 2020, they discovered an enthusiastic young driver. His reputation of being fast and fearless preceded him, but what they discovered was his engaging personality that made him an instant hit in the INDYCAR paddock. “He's actually one of those really nice guys,” said six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott
Dixon, one of his three teammates at Chip Ganassi Racing. “There has to be some underlying thing going on there somewhere. None of us have found it yet, but no, he's a really nice person. His family -- I've met his dad a few times now. Everyone is just super nice. “It's great to have somebody that's easy to work with as a teammate. Some drivers can be somewhat difficult, but he is extremely willing and wanting to learn, asks a lot of questions, sends a lot of text messages to try and just do a better job. “He's been a real pleasure to work with through these times, the same with [other teammates] Marcus [Ericsson] throughout the season, and obviously, Jimmie [Johnson], as well. Yeah, he's just a super nice person. “I think Alex is more of a kind of an ‘under-the-radar’ type of person. He's not very ‘in your face’ or anything like that. He has a pretty relaxed personality, and just wants the results to speak for themselves.” Palou was quite flattered at Dixon’s positive assessment. “Wow, I didn't know he felt like that, so that's really cool,” Palou

said. “That's amazing. I'm just in a happy place. I am racing cars in the U.S. I'm driving INDYCARs and I'm driving for the best team. They gave me the opportunity to be here talking with you guys and winning races, so that's why I'm always smiling, always positive, and I'll keep like that as long as I keep racing. “Like Team Goh and Dale Coyne, they were able to take me from Japan to the U.S. to INDYCAR [in 2020], which was a crazy move, and they made it happen. They gave me the chance to show everybody what I could do, and to have the opportunity to drive with Chip Ganassi Racing today. “I owe everything to Team Goh, to Dale [Coyne] and to Chip [Ganassi]. To be honest, I've been really lucky in life.” There are several other things to know about Palou. When he drove the No. 10 Honda to victory in his first-ever start for Chip Ganassi Racing, he joined Michael Andretti and Dan Wheldon as the only drivers to win in their Chip Ganassi Racing debut. That’s something that such greats at Juan Pablo Montoya, Alex Zanardi, Scott Dixon, and Dario Franchitti were unable to do. “It feels amazing,” he said. “I think those names you said, they won 14

more than one time, and they won championships. They are 10 steps ahead of me. It's just a start. It's just the beginning for me. But for sure we couldn't start better with Chip Ganassi Racing. When he won at Barber Motorsports Park, he became the second Spaniard to win an INDYCAR race, 16 years after Oriol Servia. “It's just amazing, but I think it was part of the job, so when you are part of a big team and a successful team like Chip Ganassi, they give you all the tools,” Palou said. “Like you have everything you need to win, and that's why you see so many successful drivers. “Last year I was struggling a bit, rookie year, pandemic going on, didn't know any of the tracks. But now we had this opportunity, and I think we started out strong, but we've got to keep it up.” Also, when Palou wins a race, his reward is a nice, big plate of fried chicken. “Maybe tonight I can have a good dinner,” Palou said after his season-opening victory at Barber Motorsports Park. “But tomorrow I have to go 8 a.m. and train to prepare for St. Pete, because that's what we do, and that's what I'm going to do tomorrow. “I like fried chicken after a race. I think that 80% of the drivers will
HONDA INDY 200 at MID-OHIO Presented by the HPD Ridgeline
tell you that after a race we need something that is not good for our body, and that's what I'm going to have tonight. Fried chicken. And fries. Lots of fries.” In just his second year in INDYCAR, Palou is part of a “destination team” at Chip Ganassi Racing. That’s one of the top teams in the series and one where a driver can make a permanent home if he is successful. “That's all I wanted, to be in a position to be part of a winning team, a historical team.” Palou said. “The No. 10 has so much history behind it, so many like race wins and championships. It's amazing.
“I believe it, but it's difficult to believe that I am in this position with these opportunities. So, I cannot thank enough all the Chip Ganassi Racing, but especially Chip for the opportunity that they gave me for this year. “I think it's the opportunity that you search since you start on karting. But then when you move up, that's the dream. That's the biggest dream. It's amazing to have the opportunity this early.” Palou is confident that he will be in the battle for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship, which this year will be decided at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on September 26. “It's achievable,” Palou said. “That's the end target, but that's not what I'm thinking now. I'm thinking about Mid-Ohio, free practice, qualifying, and hopefully gets lots of points and hopefully be on the podium and hopefully win the race. “This championship is so long that you need to take it one race at a time, and yeah, maybe when it's three races to go we can start talking about what's really the championship or how is it going. But at the moment let's focus on MidOhio, try to do the best result we can there. That's what we're going to try to do all year.” If Palou is successful in reaching his goal of a championship, expect to see him celebrate with a plate or two of fried chicken. “And don’t forget the fries,” Palou said. “Lots and lots of fries.”

hen Bobby Rahal was at the height of his NTT INDYCAR SERIES racing career as a three-time CART champion and 1986 Indianapolis 500 winning driver, he often packed up the family for MidOhio. Beginning in 1989, that included a son named Graham. The precocious youngster loved his trips to Mid-Ohio, where he would get rides on golf-karts and seek out the Domino’s Pizza delivery cart for a nice, hot slice of pizza. “The first trip I remember, I was very young,” recalled Graham, now 32 and an NTT INDYCAR SERIES star at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. “There used to be a Domino’s Pizza at the track in one of those huts. They used to have the golf karts going around selling Domino’s Pizza and I just loved it. I remember being a little kid, getting a slice of pizza, and going for golf-kart rides with guys on our hospitality staff. “Then, I remember vividly as I was six, seven or eight years old I would go to the track and stay with my dad

in the motorhome and sleep up front. I remember those days so well. It helped shape my love for the sport, and shape my love for Mid-Ohio. I remember that so clearly as a kid people cheering so hard for my dad. “I live for that, every year. To go back to Mid-Ohio and be a part of that is still extremely special for me.” Beginning this year, Graham Rahal gets to pass this time-honored Rahal family tradition to the newest member of Rahal family, introducing a new generation to Mid-Ohio: daughter Harlan Ann. Even though she is less than a year old, and probably won’t remember it, it’s important for Rahal and wife Courtney to introduce his daughter to a place that means so much to his family. “To have her at Mid-Ohio is going to be tremendous for me and Courtney. To go back to a place that shaped my life in so many ways,” Rahal said. “It will be awesome to have her come and be a part of it, come see the race track, go for golf-kart rides and do the things I did as a kid.” Young Harlan Ann has already
HONDA INDY 200 at MID-OHIO Presented by the HPD Ridgeline
been exposed to her father’s world in INDYCAR. He carried her in his arms to the stage during driver introductions to the 105th Indianapolis 500 in front of 135,000 spectators and millions more on television. The look on her face was one of bewilderment, but the look on her father’s face was one of pride. “No doubt, to have Harlan with me, there is nothing in this world like it,” Rahal said. “The connection you have with her, nothing else will ever beat that. I’m certainly very lucky to have her and it was a special day to share with her, for sure.” There is something about having a child that changes one’s perspective. Rahal can attest to that in the 105th Indianapolis 500.
It was on Lap 118 when Rahal made a scheduled pit stop as he was in the hunt for the victory in the biggest race in the world. But when Rahal’s No. 15 Honda left the pits, the left rear wheel on his car had an issue and was not tight. As soon as he left the pit exit, the wheel came off, sending Rahal into a hard crash in the Turn 2 wall. The driver was shocked that his shot at an Indy 500 victory was over in an instant. He was visibly upset that another chance at Indy got away as he kneeled down and slapped both hands onto the track surface. As Rahal’s emotions ranged from anger to shock to bitter disappointment, the angst he felt vanished as soon as he arrived at his motorhome
and saw Harlan Ann look up at her father and smile. That put it all into perspective for Graham Rahal. “There is no doubt about it,” Rahal recalled. “After all the disappointment, to be able to go back to the motorhome, see a big smile on her face when I walked through the door, it puts life into perspective. It changes the way you think about absolutely everything in life. I’m still mightily disappointed. This will be a year of a great opportunity missed, but I do know to have her brought a whole new excitement, energy and smile to my face that when I got back to the bus made it all significantly better.” A race driver will experience more heartache than victory in a career and the driver who was born in nearby New Albany, Ohio can attest to that. He hopes to turn around what began as a promising season at the Honda Indy 200. The biggest victory of his career came at Mid-Ohio in 2015 and Rahal would like to celebrate a win at MidOhio with his daughter in 2021. “I feel very good about it,” Rahal said. “I’m excited to go back home.
"The fans make Mid-Ohio great, so I think it would be really cool to see what kind of fireworks show the fans can put tother. I think it would be great to see.” I think we should be very strong. I expect us to be very, very good and competitive, as we were last year. We had a pair of fourth place finishes here last year. We would like to improve on that. I do think it’s a track we can win at, I know we can, and I know we can be very competitive. “At this stage of the season, we’ve had way too many ‘oopsies’ - like at Indy and St. Pete - that hurt our championship. Now, we have to win some races and that is what we are going to try to do.” Traditionally held later in the summer, this year’s Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio moves to “Fourth of July” weekend. “I hope it will be really good,” Rahal said. “I’m excited. We have
some good fields out there to have good fireworks show. The fans make Mid-Ohio great, so I think it would be really cool to see what kind of fireworks show the fans can put tother. I think it would be great to see.” It’s also another race where Honda Performance Development can showcase its racing product in a head-to-head competition against rival Chevrolet. “Honda did a great job at Indy,” Rahal recalled. “The engines were very close this year, but on race day from a mileage perspective and everything else, Honda did a wonderful job giving us the tools needed to run up front. It’s been great to see. We look forward to the rest of the year to see what we’ve got.
“It’s been very good. The fuel mileage is great, and reliability is very strong. I expect really good things. [Honda Performance Development President] David Salters and his team continue to push the envelope and get better. I think they are continuing to take it to new levels, and we are appreciative of that.” Honda, Mid-Ohio, and the Rahal family, it’s all a part of a legacy that puts a smile on Rahal’s face, reminding him of the happy days of his youth and a chance to introduce that to his daughter. But Rahal admits that Mid-Ohio was also the site of some of his unguided boyhood mischief, including one infamous episode simply known as “the sunglasses story.” “There used to be a company called Ice that sold sunglasses,” Rahal recalled. “I was young and went in to look at them. I stole a check out of my mom’s checkbook in the bus and I wrote a check out to these people. I couldn’t have been more than six or seven years old. I wrote out a check, signed it and gave it to them. “How the hell a six- or seven-yearold knows how to write a check, I don’t know how, but in the end, I went over there, got my sunglasses, came back to the paddock area with my new sunglasses and later the guy that was running the stand comes over to my mom and says, ‘I’m not so sure this is legitimate. Can you take a peek at this and let us know if it is fake?’ “My Dad put me on the spot in front of everybody in the motorhome and ripped my ass. The next day, we were due to head out to the track, and we used to fly in a helicopter from our house in Columbus to the track every day. I didn’t want to go. I was so embarrassed; I hid in the woods until he had to go. I got to hang out at the house with somebody all day while everybody else went to the track. He wanted me to go to the race, but I was so mad and embarrassed that I hid from him so he wouldn’t take me. “There isn’t a young Graham story left to be told at Mid-Ohio, but I hope someday there are young Harlan stories that we can share.” It’s all part of the Rahal Family tradition of summertime days, and a bit of mischief or two, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

INDYCAR TAKING GREEN FLAGS WITH DEFIANT MOMENTUM, STARS IN 2021
“Defy Everything” is more than the NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ slogan for the 2021 season. It is its mindset. STORY BY INDYCAR / IMAGES BY INDYCAR PHOTO
F
rom attacking the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, where danger lurks in all four corners, to the aggressiveness needed to conquer street racing and to rumbling through picturesque road courses with a nimble Dallara chassis powered by a beast of a Chevrolet or Honda engine, INDYCAR unapologetically defies anyone to find a more dynamic and diverse series. The 16-race schedule is challenging every element of these athletes’ talent. Necks must withstand sustained loads in high-speed cornering, the bruising bumps of a temporary street circuit and the intensity of side-by-side racing with many of the best drivers ever to pass through this discipline. Championship hopefuls are trying to get the best of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, a living legend in open-wheel racing. Dixon has entered the conversation of one of the best to ever drive in INDYCAR, pursuing a record-tying seventh series title. Only A.J. Foyt has won as 18
|
many, and no other driver in history has won more than four. In terms of overall wins, Dixon has joined Foyt and Mario Andretti as the only drivers with more than 50. If it’s maximizing speed over a single lap, there have been few quicker than Team Penske’s Will Power, who could tie Andretti’s alltime mark of 67 poles by year’s end. But get this: Andretti achieved his total over 421 events; Power reached 62 in his first 235. INDYCAR is a healthy mix of old and new. Helio Castroneves of Meyer Shank Racing, who won his record-tying fourth Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in May, leads a group of drivers showing that 40 is just an age to defy. Chip Ganassi Racing has three such drivers: Dixon, Tony Kanaan and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. Power, Sebastien Bourdais of AJ Foyt Racing, Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport and Ed Carpenter of Ed Carpenter Racing are also part of the group. Takuma Sato of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has won
HONDA INDY 200 at MID-OHIO Presented by the HPD Ridgeline
two Indianapolis 500s presented by Gainbridge in his 40s. INDYCAR’s fearless young stars could care less. Andretti Autosport’s Colton Herta is the youngest race winner in the sport’s history – 18 years, 11 months, 25 days – and he still has two more chances to become the youngest winner of the Indianapolis 500. Rinus VeeKay of
Ed Carpenter Racing doesn’t turn 21 until September, and he earned his first series victory in May in the GMR Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren SP turned 22 in May and won two of the first eight races this season. The youth movement seems to go on and on: Alex Palou of Chip
Ganassi Racing and Pietro Fittipaldi of Dale Coyne Racing with RWR are 24, and Ed Jones of Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan is 26. This group helped INDYCAR realize seven different winning drivers in the season’s first seven races, with Palou, Herta, VeeKay and O’Ward victorious. Through nine races, O’Ward and Palou were the only drivers to win at least twice. You think Johnson isn’t trying to defy something? After winning 83 races and a record-tying seven season championships in NASCAR’s Cup Series, he is challenging INDYCAR’s best with all the passion that put his stock car racing resume alongside Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. Johnson is driving Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 48 Carvana Honda on the road courses and street circuits this season; Kanaan is driving the car on the ovals. Romain Grosjean spent 10 seasons in Formula One, scoring 10 top-three finishes. But when it came time to choose his next path, he saw INDYCAR’s intense form of racing too intriguing to pass on.
Like Johnson, Grosjean stepped out of his comfort zone as a seasoned Grand Prix driver to give this ultracompetitive series a try in the No. 51 NURTEC ODT Honda fielded by Dale Coyne Racing with RWR. He’s one of many with considerable F1 experience, including Juan Pablo Montoya, Marcus Ericsson and Kevin Magnussen. Ericsson earned his first series victory in the opening battle of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit in June. Scott McLaughlin could have lived out his racing career in Australia’s top series, the V8 Supercars Championship, where he won three consecutive season titles from 2018-20. But he wanted to measure himself in the series he has long watched on television (cheering on fellow New Zealander Dixon, no less). As a Team Penske driver, he must beat three championship-winning teammates – Power, Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud – before even trying to tackle a host of other bad asses await. Andretti Autosport also has a host of elite athletes. Hunter-Reay won INDYCAR’s 2012 championship and the 2014 Indianapolis 500. Alexander Rossi is also a “500” winner, capturing the 100th Running in 2016. James Hinchcliffe has won the NTT P1 Award for capturing the Indy 500 pole on that iconic IMS oval, and it seems like a foregone conclusion that Herta will one day leave his indelible mark on Indy. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has a pair of stars always in the hunt. Sato, who in 2020 became the 20th driver to win a second “500,” has won races on all of INDYCAR’s configurations: superspeedways, short ovals, road courses and street circuits. Graham Rahal finished third at Indy last year and, like Sato, has six INDYCAR wins in his career. INDYCAR’s field features drivers from around the globe. Challenging the Americans at home are drivers from Canada, Japan, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, France, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, England, Colombia, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates. The North American-based series has teams owned by U.S. driving legends A.J. Foyt, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti and Bobby Rahal, with competition coming from former drivers Chip Ganassi, Dale Coyne, Sam Schmidt and Michael

Shank, along with European-influenced entries from Arrow McLaren SP and Carlin. An electric new street race Aug. 8 in Nashville, Tennessee, and the season finale Sept. 26 in Long Beach, California, headline the exciting street circuits remaining on INDYCAR’s schedule this season. The Big Machine Music City Grand Prix in Nashville has music icon Justin Timberlake among its investors, and INDYCAR will race around Nissan Stadium, home to the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, for the next several years. The race features crossing the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge, a landmark in the city of country music’s soul. The atmosphere of the inaugural event figures to rival that of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, which has been attracting throngs of INDYCAR fans since 1984. INDYCAR’s 2021 season seemingly has storylines at every turn, from Paretta Autosport fielding an Indy 500 team primarily of women with Simona De Silvestro as the driver in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” It had support from Penske Entertainment through the company’s 20

Race for Equality & Change program introduced in July 2020. Pietro Fittipaldi, the grandson of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi, is upholding the family name. Remember, Pietro’s cousin, Christian, finished second in the “500” in 1995 and had a successful INDYCAR career, winning races on a road course (Road America) and a superspeedway (Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California). Fittipaldi’s younger brother, Enzo, is competing this season in the Road to Indy program’s Indy Pro 2000 series, and their uncle, Max Papis, is one of INDYCAR’s stewards. Several INDYCAR teams are enjoying an unprecedented period of expansion, giving the NTT INDYCAR SERIES its largest full-time car count in years. Meyer Shank Racing is one of these teams, winning its first Indy 500 with Castroneves in a part-time role alongside Jack Harvey, who appears set to become one of the next first-time series winners. MSR, like RLL, is building a new state-of-theart headquarters that exemplifies INDYCAR’s growth. The Hondas and Chevrolets used in INDYCAR operate from a 2.2-liter,

In 2018 Chilton joined the newly formed Carlin team, after spending his first two seasons in the series with another team. His best result to date came at the 2017 Indianapolis 500 where he finished 4th, after leading a race-high 50 laps. Chilton is the first British driver in more than a decade and just the fourth in the last 24 years (Nigel Mansell - 1994, Mark Blundell - 1996, Justin Wilson - 2004) to have driven full-time in Formula 1 prior to joining the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

2020 marked the first full-season NTT INDYCAR SERIES effort for Meyer Shank Racing after three partial seasons of competition. MSR began its INDYCAR series journey in 2017 with an Indianapolis 500 start and the team grew to compete in six races in 2018 and then 10 events in 2019. Harvey earned his first INDYCAR podium at the 2019 INDYCAR Grand Prix, where he finished third.

he battle for this year’s Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires title is finely poised. The 20-race season reached its midway point two weeks ago at Road America, and the top three protagonists, David Malukas, Kyle Kirkwood and Linus Lundqvist, are separated by just eight points. At stake is a scholarship valued at almost $1.3 million which will enable the champion to compete in a minimum of three NTT INDYCAR SERIES races in 2022, including the Indianapolis 500. And such is the intensity that there has been a different points leader after each of the four most recent races. Malukas currently leads the way for HMD Motorsports on 54

David Malukas is riding the crest of a wave.
Kyle Kirkwood (28) and Linus Lundqvist are both unbeaten at Mid-Ohio.
235 points, with Andretti Autosport’s Kirkwood and Sweden’s Lundqvist, who drives for Global Racing Group with HMD Motorsports, tied together in second on 227. Malukas has finished on the podium previously at Mid-Ohio and also has the benefit of some previous Indy Lights experience at the track in 2019. But he cannot match the records of his two primary rivals. Fellow American Kirkwood swept all three Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship races here en route to the title in 2018, then won both Indy Pro 2000 Championship races the following year on his way to another scholarship. Sweden’s Lundqvist, meanwhile, enjoyed a similarly emphatic debut last year when he won both Formula Regional Americas Championship races, chased home each time by teammate Malukas! Lundqvist, a former British Formula 3 Champion, went on to claim the FRA title with consummate ease. Aside from this trio, Toby Sowery (Juncos Racing), Alex Peroni (Carlin), Benjamin Pedersen (Global Racing

his weekend’s USF2000 Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio Presented by Cooper Tires triple-header is likely to prove pivotal in terms of determining who will win this year’s Cooper USF2000 Championship – and a scholarship valued at over $400,00 to ensure graduation to the next step on the Road to Indy ladder for 2022. With 10 of the 18 races already in the books, six different drivers from four different teams have tasted the
fruits of victory, but no one has yet managed to distance himself from the pack. Brazilian Kiko Porto currently leads the way for DEForce Racing, thanks to a streak of five top-five finishes, including a pair of wins. Hot on his heels, though, is Yuven Sundaramoorthy, a university student from Delafield, Wis., who has won three times for Pabst Racing. Sundaramoorthy, now in his third full year of USF2000, took full advantage of his experience in the most recent race at

Rookie Thomas Nepveu (2) emerged from a frantic pack to win at Road America.
Road America, where he fought back from an early incident which dropped him almost to the tail of the 25-car field to finish a solid sixth. Josh Pierson (Pabst Racing), from Wilsonville, Ore., is one of the youngest protagonists at just 15 years of age, but is already into his second season at this level. He is also one of only two drivers to have finished all 10 races among the top 10 and currently lies third in the points table. With five podium finishes already to his credit, perhaps that first win is just around the corner? Other seasoned campaigners include Michael d’Orlando, from Hartsdale, N.Y., who secured his maiden victory here at Mid-Ohio in
2020 for Cape Motorsports, and Exclusive Autosport’s Christian Brooks, from Santa Clarita, Calif., who has won twice this year and seemed to be on a role until unfortunately missing out on another secondplace finish at Indianapolis when his car’s rear diffuser failed to meet the technical specifications in postrace inspection. Brooks was out of luck again at Road America but is anxious to return to the winner’s circle this week. This is turning out to be a stellar season for USF2000, with as many as 28 cars expected this week and almost all of them capable of challenging for the top step. It should be fun!

B
raden Eves and Christian Rasmussen have emerged as the primary contenders for this year’s Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, the second rung on the unique Road to Indy openwheel development program. Coincidentally, they have been the two most recent champions from the initial step on the ladder, the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship, with Eves, from New Albany, Ohio, claiming top honors in 2019 and Denmark’s Rasmussen scooping the lucrative scholarship last year. Rasmussen currently holds an 18-point edge after winning five of the last seven races for the Jay Howard Driver Development team, including the most recent outing two weeks ago at Road America, where he rebounded from a frightening accident in the opening
race to take a hard-fought victory in the second. Eves, though, knows all about overcoming adversity. His rookie season of Indy Pro 2000 in 2020 was cut short by a nasty crash at the Indianapolis Grand Prix circuit, but not before he had already made his mark with a win here at his home track, Mid-Ohio. Eves made a fairytale return with his Exclusive Autosport team by winning the opening race of this season at Barber Mo-
torsports Park and added a second victory on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. Both talented youngsters have made no secret of the fact that neither of them would have been able to take this next step without the benefit of the USF2000 champion’s scholarship. And the same goes for their aspirations of graduation to Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires in 2022. Only one of them – or perhaps some else altogether? – can claim
the scholarship prize valued at almost $780,000 to guarantee that progression. Among the other contenders are Eves’ Russian teammate, Artem Petrov, New Zealander Hunter McElrea (Pabst Racing) and Mexico’s Manuel Sulaiman (Juncos Racing), all of whom already have tasted victory this year. And then there’s Sulaiman’s teammate, 15-year-old Reece Gold, from Miami, Fla., who won one of the USF2000 races here last year and is desperately seeking his maiden Indy Pro 2000 victory after taking four positions and six podium finishes thus far....
Manuel Sulaiman took two poles and a win recently at Road America.

Students practice collision avoidance techniques, loss of control recovery skills, bad weather maneuvers through emergency lane change, wet braking, and skid car drills. On select dates, Double-Up Days will provide two students (teens and/or adults) the life saving skills provided in a traditional Teen Defensive Driving Program for one price. Many parents sign up for the Double-Up Day, so they can participate and also bond with their teen.

This course covers the physics and dynamics of precision driving then tests participant skills behind-the-wheel in intense off-track performance driving drills. The highlight of this entry level program includes an hour-long, on-track lapping session at day's end. Participants will also spend time driving the Honda S2000 roadster on an autocross course. > ADVANCED HIGH PERFORMANCE COURSE
Attack the same course that challenges the world’s top racers by breaking it down into smaller segments and repeatedly practicing those segments. Refine your new high performance skills, learn more precise lines and apply these during highspeed cornering and lead-follow lapping drills. The final step to open lapping includes instructor rides and passing drills before taking
the green flag for several hours of open lapping with controlled passing. All driving instruction takes place on the racetrack! > LAPPING PROGRAM

You will spend a full day lapping Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and see why the track is called the "Most Competitive in the U.S." The highly experienced instructors will teach you not only the fastest way around Mid-Ohio, but also the race craft to get you to the checkered flag first! > OPEN TEST AND TUNE: STREET CARS
Have you always wanted to get your street-legal car on the track at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course? This is your least expensive option! Each group will receive approximately three 20-minute Lead/Follow or Open Lapping sessions, depending on driver skill levels and track conditions. No SUVs, vans, or trucks are eligible to participate.
