ISSUE PREVIEW
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
Y
eah, that just happened. You picked up a badass truck magazine and thought, “Wow, this is pretty awesome. Where did this come from?” Then you took a closer look at the cover and saw your old friend, PASMAG. That’s right; Performance Auto & Sound Magazine has forayed into the world of 4X4s, lift kits, four-link suspension, and unparalleled torque. We’ve stepped into the realm of trucks and we have got to say, we’re really enjoying the view. Now, just because you’re used to getting the latest and greatest in the tuning and modifying sport compact scene from us, it doesn’t mean that we were running around with our heads cut off when it came to this issue. We come from all walks of automotive life, and found that trucks are one thing that we can all agree are awesome. When you open your magazine further, you’ll find you’re right at home. As usual, we don’t slouch in the content we deliver, and we deliver a bit of everything. Our truck issue is chock full of features that will inspire you to build and hit the dirt. That burly white Ford you see on the cover is the Complete Customs F-250, and it’s on the cover for a reason. We challenge you to find a build that competes with this pristine off-road powerhouse. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Tjin Edition F-150. This 10
PASMAG
slammed pickup has been the talk of the talk for a while now and we have the inside track on the ridiculous work that went into taking a truck and dropping it mere inches from the ground. On another plane of its own is driftmonster Ken Block’s RaptorTRAX. Taking the SVT Raptor and slapping Mattracks on it is something just crazy enough for Block to pull off, and we talk with him about what this mountain slayer is all about. Now, before you think we went all Ford on you, we’ve got some goodness for the Cummins and DuraMAX fans. American Force is all about making your truck look damn fine, but this monster Ram 2500 they have concocted just begs for attention. Bright green, lifted, tuned, and rocking some custom wheels, you’ll want in on what they’re drinking over there. Pitbull Motor Toyz has also been busy fitting their Silverado to be ready for battle. Under the WWII bomber scheme, there’s some serious Focal audio happening. Last, but definitely not least, we have a Jeep Wrangler that was born out of a love for audio and rallying. This thing hits the backcountry and blasts it’s own theme song in the process. Not going to SEMA this year? No worries! We have some truck previews right here that are going to be the talk of the show (and for a good while after, as well). Stay ahead of the curve with these awe-inspiring builds that are poised to drop jaws in Vegas:

HPI PERFORMANCE CUSTOM CHEVY PICKUP At last year’s SEMA show, the husband and wife team of HPI Customs brought a 1966 Chrysler Imperial powered by a Paxtonsupercharged Viper motor, which they lovingly named “The Tyrant.” This year, they teamed up with Vortech Superchargers to bring this custom Chevy pickup to life. With tons of Chevy performance goodies and a modern touch, this truck is sure to go over well with enthusiasts of all ages.
TOYO TIRES KROQ CHEVROLET
S I LV E R A D O D U R A M A X H D D U A L LY
Toyo Tires teams up with the ever-popular KROQ FM radio station to bring this Chevy Silverado Dually to SEMA 2014. As well as a one-of-a-kind design, this Chevy will showcase American Force dually wheels wrapped

1973 BOSS F-100
New to the SEMA fray this year is On The Ground Designs. Jason Jones set out to start a lifestyle brand that would appeal to enthusiasts and builders, and he hopes to show what his company is all about with his 1973 BOSS F-100 truck at SEMA 2014. Teaming up with concept designer Tavis Highlander and making power with a Vortech Supercharger, this truck just might set a new standard for these popular ‘70s pickups.
SOUNDSTREAM 2012 JEEP JK UNLIMITED SPORT
Someone had to build a sweet Jeep, and Soundstream has it down to a science. Of course, the audio system is comprised of outstanding Soundstream goodies. The killer combo of a Bulletproof six-inch lift, custom Rock Krawler coilovers over the DUB Monster Edition wheels and R1 Concepts brakes scream off-road. Flat fenders, a one-off roof rack, and some Smittybilt XRC bumpers make sure you get the hint.
in Toyo’s Open Country tires. Banks Power and Bud’s Diesel will be making the DuraMAX blow smoke. On top of the truck, a custom roof rack with integrated horns will make sure this Silverado is heard as well as seen.
This F-250 is sure to be a standout with its aqua-blue accents and suspension components, and brushed aluminum vinyl wrap. A worked-over turbo diesel sits under the hood and an air ride system ensures that the Ford looks great over its Hostile wheels and Toyo tires, no matter the height. Inside, the interior is custom upholstered, and Kicker brings the noise.
We strive to bring you the hottest and newest products to outfit whatever vehicle it is that you drive. If you’re looking to upgrade any area of your truck, look no further. Our Buyers Guides have all of your audio needs in check, and we've got some additional goodies to deck out your ride. We also have a full-on Wheel and Tire Guide, so if you are wondering what to fit under your recently lifted or lowered fenders, we’ve got you covered. So, hit the shows, the country, roll some coal, or spin some tires...just take us along for the ride. There’s so much stuff in here, you won’t want to put us down anyway! We sincerely hope you enjoy this inaugural Trucks issue of PASMAG. Now what are you waiting for? Get out there. We’ll fit in your glove box.

YOU. NO. LONGER. HAVE. TO. THINK. OR. TALK. LIKE. A. ROBOT. Aren’t you tired of trying to remember ‘command’ words, pause between those words and follow complex and carefully choreographed routines to use your car’s voice recognition feature? Well, we certainly were so that’s why we invented Intelligent VOICE powered by Google. With Intelligent VOICE, you can simply speak what’s on your mind, without thinking about how to say it, or force yourself to go through rehearsed queries. For instance, just say the entire address of the destination you want to go – no need to specify the state, city, street, and house number one at a time – or simply state what you feel such as “I’m hungry” for a list of nearby restaurants. Intelligent VOICE gets it quickly and conversationally and delivers what you are looking for every time. Intelligent Voice Available Now on Clarion’s All New NX604 AVN System

SURFACE PREP Surface preparation is easy when coating your truck bed. First, you want to wash the surface to remove any dirt or debris. After you wash the surface, wipe it down with a good quality wax and grease remover.
Now that the surface is clean and the truck is masked to avoid any unwanted overspray, it’s time to mix the Shake & Shoot. Mix only one Part A can at a time. Use all of the material in that can then mix up the next Part A can.
SANDING Next, sand the area with 120- to 150-grit sandpaper, or a nylon cup brush on a buffer. The better the sanding is on the surface, the better the adhesion on the bed liner – so make sure to sand thoroughly. If any areas look shinny or glossy, you need to sand more! After sanding, blow off the surface of any sanding residue and re-clean. Any areas of rust or large areas of bare metal should be treated before proceeding. Now you are ready to mask your vehicle. Additional masking may be needed depending on your experience.
MIXING IS EASY Step 1: Pour Part B into the Part A can, up to the white fill line, and replace the caps on both Part A and Part B. Step 2: Make sure the cap is snug on Part A, and then shake the can vigorously by hand for two to three minutes. The mixture should be smooth in consistency. Step 3: Remove the cap and apply. Attach either the Schutz-style spray gun (shown) and spray, brush or roll the coating onto the surface. Continue the above steps until all areas are coated. Your applied coating should not exceed approximately 10 mm in wet thickness. If you would like to apply an additional light texture coat, allow the first coat to flash before applying the texture coat. Allow the finished product to dry and enjoy your professional looking results! It’s that easy to protect your investment!
MASKING Mask all of the surrounding areas to the application to avoid any overspray or roller spatter. If you are spraying, cover all areas with a plastic cover to be safe.

PICKUP TJIN EDITION LOWERS THE BOOM ON THE FORD F-150
BY JORDAN LENSSEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ICON MEDIA
W
hen you’ve got as much experience as Neil Tjin, finding a new way to challenge your craft is always at the pinnacle of your priority list. You have to challenge to progress, and yet, time and time again, he and his group at Tjin Edition seem to succeed, with crowd-pleasing results every time. In this, one of his latest projects in coordination with the Ford Motor Company, Tjin pushes the boundaries of what can be done with the iconic F-150 pickup. Typically left to the devices of contractors and off-road enthusiasts of North America and the world over, the longstanding and industrystandard flatbed was given to Tjin to push it to the limit of design, customization and creativity. Tjin approaches every build with a formula; it makes his vehicles instantly stand out in the crowd, while being unapologetically recognizable as a project from the man who was instrumental at the dawn of the sport compact movement in the early ‘90s. His ability to infuse personal tastes that speak to the end viewer is a special part of each project, and here, it’s no different. At a time when lifted and off-road styles are taking over the trucking airwaves, Tjin’s F-150 challenges those sentiments by being massive despite its size. There’s a reason nothing else like this exists, and it’s simply the planning and work required to pull it off. Sure, installing a lift kit offers a whole host of issues to tackle, but after talking with Tjin, lowering his F-150 onto the three-stage Accuair e-Level/i-Level air suspension system was beyond anything even he ever imagined.
38
PASMAG
TUNING ESSENTIALS // 2014 TRUCKS SPECIAL EDITION
“The whole suspension setup took over 300 hours to complete,” he says. “Honestly, had I known it would’ve taken that long, I probably never would have done it. But the payoff was worth it and I was able to gain a lot of experience to put toward my current [truck] builds.” Ford’s F-150 has been the subject of numerous lowered builds in the past, but the 2013 that Tjin was commissioned suffered one major flaw. It wasn’t the result of error, but rather the sheer lack of aftermarket suspension parts. “We were taking parts from the F-150 Lightning, the Raptor – basically anything that would fit – and had to customize or fabricate a ridiculous amount of parts,” he says. The idea was to get the F-150 as low to the ground as possible, so that meant sourcing, cutting and welding components all over. The team picked Chris Alston’s Chassisworks as the supplier for the majority of their components, ranging from arms to bars and linkages, and although the Tjin team chose from the cream of the crop, the setup of the Tjin F-150 was far in the opposite direction of what the parts were intended for.
“Even with our parts sourced, the team at Unique Fabrications had to build 90-percent of the suspension [because of how low it sits],” Tjin says. For many, it would have spelled defeat, but Tjin had a vision and sought to make it a reality. The truck’s glued-to-the-ground stance is nothing short of extraordinary. Firstly, in show mode, or Accuair setting no. 1, the F-150 literally sits frame-to-the-floor. There’s a noticeable thud when the CAC airbags are dropped all the way down, and to accomplish this took more than just suspension work. Unique Fabrications, Adam Carpenter and Josh Freeman had the responsibility of lifting a number of components to make sure the F-150 could sit and do so safely. The gas tank, four-link suspension, rear valance and subframe all had to be raised three-inches to avoid being crushed by the truck’s 5,000+ lb. gross weight. Then there’s the rear frame tubing, which underwent surgery to allow for proper fitment of the hulking 24x12-inch one-off Rotiform Six-Shooter wheels and Falken tires which, anywhere else would appear

preposterous, but here, fit perfectly. Inside is Baer’s six-piston big brake kit, painted in matching red and stamped with the Tjin Edition logo. A simple button push on the e-Level controller lifts the F-150 to mode two for driving, and in mode three, it actually stands three-inches above stock ride height. And you thought it was just dropped. For Tjin, this truck was all about doing something different. The bodywork was another major undertaking in itself. The custom Axalta color pallet is an ode to his brother-in-law Osbert Huang, who Tjin says has basically trademarked gunmetal grey clothing. DTM Auto Body was tasked with incorporating a number of Ford trademarks that are subtle
enough to make you think it’s 100-percent F-150, but as Tjin explains, it’s anything but. “The bed and rear fenders are all metal and taken from a Raptor. The front fenders are all Raptor and cut and lowered by 1.5 inches to line up with the F-150 hood, which we kept. We also wanted to keep the grill from the F-150 to stick with the factory appearance, but then we took two Raptor front bumpers and welded them together to make it sit lower and match the rest of the truck.” At the back, Tjin wanted the F-150 to be devoid of any obtrusive OEM bits, so DTM installed a rear valance, molded it into the rear fenders and modified it to match the outer body lines of the truck bed.

Above the cab, Ray at Webasto installed two separate, motorized sunroofs, which not only required a great deal of chopping, but reshaping the entire roof to match the glass profile. Under the hood, the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost received Vortech’s intercooler and tuning treatment and Royal Purple fluids. On the exit side is a custom-made Magnaflow exhaust system and Unique Fabrication tips that push the stock output an extra 80-horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque for 445 and 520, respectively. Tjin’s F-150, while appearing to be all about stance, is anything but. Today, it is the force behind Tjin Edition, towing the company’s best fabrications across the country on a weekly basis as part of the Tjin Edition Roadshow. The F-150 took SEMA by storm last year, and this time, it will be hauling Tjin’s latest creation – a Ford Expedition – which is set to build on the pickup’s momentum in every way. We can’t wait to see it.

f there is one person out there who is game for just about anything, Ken Block makes the cut. This adrenaline junkie is well known around the world for doing the sickest skids this side of everywhere. If you don’t know who Ken Block is, I’ll give you a second to catch up on his viral video portfolio. Time’s up. What most people aren’t aware of is that before the drifting and sliding madman he is today, Ken Block totally had a crush on snowboarding. He still does. One of Block’s first videos is a shoot for a DC Shoes snowboard bit. To spice things up and make it more than just some guys on boards with edgy punk music, Block thought it would be a rad idea to incorporate his Subaru rally car into the mix. He wasn’t wrong. The video of him jumping off of snow ramps and towing his pro-boarder buddies took off, and so began his journey to Internet infamy. Block’s latest online endeavor is totally different from his past ones. He’s not drifting

KEN BLOCK’S RAPTORTRAX SHREDS MOUNTAINS
the autodrome or skidding around Universal Studios. He’s back where he started, playing in the snow. Except now, instead of shredding powder in a Subie, this time he’s slaying the mountain in his new RaptorTRAX. What is a RaptorTRAX? It’s not a velociraptor that runs on train tracks; it’s actually more awesome than that. Block has taken a Ford SVT Raptor, supercharged it, given it the Hoonigan touch, and slapped on a set of Mattracks, which are like tank treads for the snow that can fit on your ride. How did this all come about? “Well, one of my passions is snowboarding, so I wanted to come up with a dope project that would combine my desires to shred powder with a cool vehicle concept,” Block explains. “I'm a huge Raptor fan and I happened to have a set of Mattracks lying around. One thing led to another, and the next thing I know, I've got the RaptorTRAX sitting out in my shop garage!” Easy as that. Well, sort of. The donor Raptor came courtesy of Ford, as it was a past SEMA project. Block then sat down with his army of awesome wizards at Hoonigan Racing Division and came up with a killer concept. The concept, truck, and Mattracks were sent out to the Raptor pros at Special Vehicle Concepts (SVC) in SoCal, and they put this burly beast together. “When I first saw it roll into the workshop I freaked out a little bit,” says Block. “To have an idea in your head and then have that turned into a rendering, which then becomes a tangible object that you're sitting behind the wheel of is an incredible feeling. I was really stoked when I finally saw it in person!”

As cool as the RaptorTRAX is, it’s also a bit of a chubster. It turns out that adding massive treads to your truck causes some weight issues. Who knew? To make up for the new tank legs, King came through with Pre-runner dampers and custom-valved bump stops designed specifically for the RaptorTRAX. SVC also worked some magic while stitching this thing together, and provided upper and lower control arms and modified long bars. The 6.2-liter V8 in the Raptor isn’t anything to sneeze at, but to be on the safe (and awesome) side, a Whipple supercharger was added to bring the RaptorTRAX up to 600 horsepower and haul some mass. On the inside, it’s about comfort and safety. Wouldn’t you want to ride in comfort and peace of mind while demolishing fresh powder? A full rollcage from SVC provides some rigid protection and is then wrapped in suede, just like the headliner, because treschic rollcages are totally in right now. A set of five-point harnesses drape over some Recaro Sportser bucket seats, which really add to the tranquility for Block. “My Recaro buckets helped make the cockpit not only comfortable, but way safer as well, since there's always that off chance that the truck goes off the wrong side of a mountain face.” Block says it like it’s no big deal.
TUNING ESSENTIALS // 2014 TRUCKS SPECIAL EDITION
The Mattracks do pull a lot of attention, but the rest of the truck is pretty badass. A custom Hoonigan camo wrap clings to the Raptor body and some Glassworks Unlimited wide front fenders make the truck look a little more menacing, while adding some room for those gigantic treads to do their work. The SVC front bumper and skid plate combination is a winning one and gives the RaptorTRAX even more of a tank vibe. Fifty- and 30-inch light bars from Rigid Industries take up residence on the roof and front bumper, respectively. There are even some rear-facing spotlights for Block’s buddies, who can strap into the bed-mounted waterproof Recaros while getting some late night shreddage in. One thing is for sure: this beast gets some use. “So far, I’ve run it in Aspen during the X Games and up at Baldface Lodge in Nelson, B.C.,” Block says. “Hopefully this coming winter I can get out and run it at home in Park City.” That’s why Block calls Park City, Utah home; he can walk out his door and be on the slopes, and it’s just a short drive from more than halfa-dozen sweet resorts. Just a PSA to all of you skiers and boarders in Park City – if you hear reports of a beastly figure devastating the slopes, it’s not the abominable snowman, it’s just your friendly neighborhood Ken Block.

COMPLETE CUSTOMS FORD F-250

cKinney, Texas has a rich history in the Lone Star state. Incorporated in 1848, it’s positioned in the north side, just 30 miles from Dallas, where the fertile land made it the perfect point for agriculture in the area. The growth of textile mills, corn and flour industries exploded with the expansion of the Houston and Texas Central railroad in 1872, leading to the creation of one of the earliest textile mills in the country – the Texas Cotton Mill Company. Today, McKinney is rated as one of the best places to live in the country. It’s vast farmland provides plenty of resources, and one of the biggest playgrounds in the northern state. So suffice to say, pickup trucks play a big part in work, and play. Shaun Freilich is one of those people with whom that sentiment resonates with. The grandson of a classic car collector, he was introduced to automotive builds and restorations from a young age. He started building vehicles in his grandparent’s wrecking yard in Lucerne Valley, California and took that experience to trucks, crafting his hobby and laying the groundwork for the F-250 you see here. The turning point in his career came in 2008, when, after working extensively with numerous other builders and suppliers, he was approached to build RBP’s SEMA truck. The blue-on-white flame paint scheme and matching boat/trailer
combo was such a hit that he returned to the show for 2010. Making the most of his experience and his contacts inside and out of the show, Freilich was persuaded to push his hobby into a full-time career, so he created Complete Customs just one year later. “I started the company back in the summer of 2011,” Freilich says. Through [my previous SEMA projects], I met a lot of really cool people in the industry. Some of the owners of the companies we were getting parts from, they kind of persuaded me to open a shop, being that I was in Texas and the economy was good at the time. So I went ahead with the shop in McKinney – it was a single bay, 3,000 square-foot building.” It was just after celebrating their first anniversary that Freilich and his company returned to SEMA in 2012 – again with a Ford, and again with a blue-on-white paint scheme. But this time it wasn’t planned. Freilich was actually building a 12th generation F-Series for a private customer, but after working with the stronger, more definitive body design, he saw it evolving into a beast of its own. “The truck was already built when we received it, it had wheels and tires and a lift kit – not the greatest parts – but it had stuff on it,” Freilich says. “[The owner] saw some of our most recent work and said, ‘I want you to build me the baddest F-250 possible.’ So I sat down with him to see what colors and what direction he wanted, and once that conversation was over, I thought it would be an awesome SEMA build. “He said, ‘Here’s the keys, here’s the check book, go do your thing.’” Commissioning the talented group at KEGMedia to develop a render of the car, it wasn’t long before the sponsors and suppliers wanted part of the action. Freilich would make his return to the RBP booth just four years after debuting his first SEMA truck, and the progression was obvious.

The pearl white paint came straight from the factory, but with stone chips and dings, CC made sure to expertly match each exterior upgrade to the original color – no easy task. The minimal blue accents stick to the clean theme while contributing just the right amount of electricity to make it pop. The 24-inch, twopiece RBP Revolver wheels are paint-matched, and each of the eight spokes detailed using the same blue, which on closer inspection, hides a customized set of Kelderman 8to10 four-link air ride suspension components.

“It’s a full bolt on kit – there’s a little bit of welding and fabrication, for sure. It’s the premium kit, but we custom powder-coated it and chromed out the accessories to match the rest of the build.” What’s more, with as much as 10 inches of travel, the F-250 is extremely versatile. At six inches of wheel clearance, it’s an easy entry and comfortable ride height for rural or suburban drives, but a flip of the switch and the Kelderman kit balloons to an incredible 14 inches, wheel to fender. Paired with 800 lb-ft of torque from the Ford 6.7-liter turbo diesel and the chunky treads of the 24-inch Interco SS-M16 tires, and regardless of the job or location, this F-250 will get there with little to no effort. The OEM front and rear bumpers were replaced with RBP’s offerings, stamped with the company logo, complete with double tow hooks on each end and a cutout to make room for a front-mounted six horsepower Bulldog winch capable of pulling a 12,000 lbs. of anything from anywhere. In terms of detail, Complete Customs left no stone unturned. Nowhere is that more evident than on the RBP RX-3 grill and custom Plain & Simple headlight assembly, which are paintmatched in the factory pearl white, then accented with blue bolts and lens housings. Even the RX-3 chrome side steps received a fresh blue coat in the logo detail. When you get inside, it’s evident how encompassing this build really is. The blue suede headliner is stamped with the CC logo, the entire dash is dressed in blue, and Roadwire Leather Interiors drape the seating, finished with stitched logos in the back and headrests. From the driver’s point of view, he has complete control of performance and sound, starting with an H&S Black Maxx Programmer that displays more than 20 vital engine statistics (four at one time), and on-the-fly tuning with four power levels to pump sound through the monstrous MBRP stainless exhaust.

For audio of a different kind, Pioneer’s flagship AVIC-Z140BH head unit controls an array of Rockford Fosgate components, including a T1000-1DB1 sub amp, a custom-enclosed set of P3 subwoofers, and a T400-4 amp that sends sound to T2 6.5-inch component speakers. It’s this type of work that proves why the company is so deserving of its name and why it exists in the first place. But ask Freilich, and he doesn’t forget his roots and the people who helped get him here. “Roland Trudell of RBP was one of the key people that influenced me to open a shop,” he says. “I worked with him for the first time at SEMA in 2008. He introduced me to a lot more people in the industry and paved the way for me to do this, schooled me on what to do and what not to do. I owe it all to him. If it wouldn’t have been for him – teaching, encouraging and persuading me – I probably never would have opened Complete Customs.

“During the remodel and building prep for the first shop, a young gentleman walked over named Luis Salas,” Freilich says. “He saw what I was doing and asked to work for me. I wasn’t really looking to hire anybody that early, but I did, and he’s my lead guy now. He’s been with me since day one.” Last year, Complete Customs upgraded to an 18,000 square-foot facility and opened a new location in Odessa, Texas, and they show no signs of slowing down. Just three years later, the company will be hitting SEMA in full force with a seemingly-impossible amount of projects – 17 to be exact – which includes 16 trucks and two new undertakings that will display the company’s growth even further: a brown Audi A5 with paint-matched wheels and a Cadillac CTS Wagon that we can’t wait to see. Complete Customs might be in its infancy, but when it’s spread across some of the busiest booths at one of the industry’s biggest shows, you know it’s here to stay.

his truck is the exact opposite of subtle. An eight-inch suspension lift is usually enough to get looks on the street. Custom aluminum bumpers garner a few more scopes. Add in a bright green paint color that Marvel might just sue you for, and you’re snapping necks everywhere you go. This is what life is like for Albert Diaz and his family. And they love it. “We can’t go anywhere without people honking the horn and waving and giving us thumbs up,” Diaz exclaims. “It’s insane the amount of attention this truck gets.”

DAILY DRIVEN GREEN MONSTER
With its paint job alone, it’s not hard to imagine how much of an attention magnet this 2013 Ram is. If you didn’t know better, you’d think you stumbled into the middle of the set of an Avengers sequel during one of Hulk’s smashing scenes. As mentioned before, this truck isn’t just obscenely green, it’s also large and in charge. This is courtesy of an eightinch boost in height from Mcgaughys Suspension. This all-in-one kit is essential if you want to see above it all, as well as have the legs to stretch over any terrain. To complement this, Diaz added four-link suspension in the
front end and had some custom rear traction bars made up. This is hilarious considering Diaz’s past ride. “My previous car was an Infiniti G35, slammed with 20x12s on it,” he laughs. “That’s totally, extremely the opposite of what this is.” It’s the total, extreme opposite, save for a set of killer wheels. Having the hookup with American Force, Diaz set out to make his set stick out from the rest. A foursome of black, eight-spoke Master FP8 wheels with matching green trim were sourced in 24x14 with a negative 73 offset. As you can imagine, the dishes on these things

are serious. Not letting the space go to waste, Diaz called up one of his buddies to wrap the barrels in a custom graphic scheme. “It’s a buddy of mine up in Canada,” says Diaz. “He does graphics and he had them on his wheels last year at SEMA. He said, if I wanted to, he’d make me a set for my truck. I said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it!’ He made the graphics there and we installed them here in Miami.” These wheel wraps are like I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter; you just can’t tell. The custom stickers are super high quality and cleanly installed, which makes them looks like an urban Michelangelo got in there and went to town with his brush. “He figured out a way to get the right curvature on the sticker so that when you laid it down, it completely wraps all the way around,” Diaz explains. “It’s just like putting on a sticker; just take your time and put it on nice and even.”

Carrying on with the beastly exterior, Diaz threw on some American Force aluminum bumpers. The front bumper, besides giving the Ram a rugged feel, features a seamless lighting install. All bulbs on the truck have been converted over to Wurx Industries LED bulbs. Six, count ’em six, Rigid Industries LED lighting kits illuminate this truck. The underbody lights have been swapped out with some green LEDs, which make the Hulk known at night. An interesting addition is AMP Research’s Power Steps. They were added to keep the wife happy with the green beast, which, let’s be honest, is the most important. “When we bought the truck, my wife was pregnant at the time and she was like, ‘I don’t feel too good about this because you want to lift it. I can’t pick the baby up there,’” recalls Diaz. “I ended up putting in the AMP Research Power Steps to make it easier.”

Now, fans of the Ram will know the 2500 is already a capable truck with its 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel, resulting in it’s bestin-class towing award for the millionth year in a row. To add a bit more kick and some fuel economy, Diaz turned to Bully Dog. “Nobody really makes anything for the ’13 or newer Dodges,” Diaz says. “Bully Dog does; they came out with this programmer. It’s a little tuner, not anything crazy.” The Bully Dog Triple Dog diesel gauge tuner is an all-in-one system that displays all the read outs you need to know from your Ram, but also provides an up-to 140 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque upgrade in some instances, as well as a more economic fuel map. A powerhouse that sips at the pump? Hell yeah. “It’s a management system that tells me everything that’s going on with the truck,” Diaz explains. “It tells me exhaust temperature, miles an hour and fuel consumption. I didn’t get it for power, I got it for fuel economy.” With a big green monster right out of a comic book living in his garage, Diaz is thrilled with his first diesel build. It backs up its crazy looks with just the right amount of performance for a daily driver, that keeps his family safe from anything Miami can throw at it. If anything should happen to Mark Ruffalo’s version of the Hulk, this Ram is a shoe-in for the next Avengers movie.

hen you think Jeep, you think tried and true off-road capability and a ruggedness that just won’t give up. Jeeps don’t get stuck, they just venture further into the thick of it. While this romanticized view of the off-road American icon still holds true today, unfortunately the numbers these represent are few and far between. The majority of Jeeps on the road these days have been turned into manicured pavement princesses and grocery getters, instead of land-conquering 4x4s. It’s kind of like when your buddy stopped showing up for football on Sundays and started following Dancing With The Stars religiously. 58

TUNING ESSENTIALS // 2014 TRUCKS SPECIAL EDITION
When Brian Sherman purchased his 2013 Jeep Wrangler, he had a build plan that would not only stay true to the Jeep’s off-road roots, but would also put a tasteful twist on things. Sherman is the Director of Business Development at Maxxsonics and an admirer of Jeeps and their off-road lineage. “[I've] always loved Jeeps, but never owned one,” says Sherman. “The wide range of customization options available made it a good option for us. The new engine and transmission combination responds well to performance upgrades, making it a good performer off-road.” Sherman and his family have been competing in car shows and sound offs for years. They started in the JDM scene with Hondas, then worked their way up to Euros. Their Audi S4 was actually featured in our magazine on two separate occasions! What was the allure of moving from luxurious, European road floaters to rugged, American trail runners? “I grew up in rural Pennsylvania in a small town that hosts the annual STPR (Susquehanna Trail Pro Rally),” explains Sherman. “This Rally America sanctioned event introduced me to high performance vehicles at an early age. Watching rally legend John Buffum slice through the trees near my childhood home in a highly modified UR Quattro is a memory I hope I never forget.” With thoughts of rally madmen ripping through the trails in his head, Sherman set out to find the perfect set up for his Wrangler. However, with an aftermarket slightly shy of a Honda Civic’s, part choices were going to be tough. After gaining inspiration from SEMA in 2012, he had an idea of where he wanted to go. When searching for some proven legs for his Jeep, Sherman sought out the accessible and proven Rough Country for his needs. Rough Country shocks, springs, and sway bars make up the capable suspension, while the lift kit provides 3.25-inches more space between the Jeep’s belly and the ground. To conquer any terrain, sturdy wheels and big rubber are a must. Sherman chose a set of hard alloy Black Rhino Moab wheels in 17x9-inches all around, which were then wrapped in some
fatty Falken Wildpeak A/T tires, measuring in at LT35x12.5 a piece. With shoes like that, an Airaid intake, and a Superchips ECU under the hood, he's going wherever he wants, whenever he pleases. To complete it’s rugged exterior, Warn Industries was Sherman’s best option for his Wrangler. Elite series front and rear bumpers add some armor, while a Zeon 10S winch in the front and swingaway tire carrier with a full-size spare and Hi-Lift jack leave no questions about what this Jeep does in its spare time. If that’s enough of a hint for you, a Rogue-4 50-inch LED light bar dominates the front roofline for those evening jaunts through the backcountry. N-Fab removable steps give the kids a leg up when they’re getting taxied around, but they get right out of the way when it’s business time. With the Wrangler off-road ready, this is where Sherman saw fit to throw his own spin on it. A Pioneer AppRadio 3 acts as the helm to the audio system with more features than you can shake a muddy tire at. To get tasteful, quality sound from all around, MB Quart’s RCM216 6.5-inch component system is utilized. MB Quart RKM116 6.5-inch coaxials round out the rear fill. In the back, a custom enclosure can be seen shining the Jeep logo proudly in red. Inside, the box houses an MB Quart PWM304 12-inch DVC subwoofer, sealed with Boom Mat sound deadening spray. Boom Mat makes up the Jeep’s headliner too, which keeps the silky smooth tunes thumping inside the Wrangler. To get such smoothness, an MB Quart RM740.5 five-channel amplifier and two Maxxlink VHC-5V3 five-farad capacitors filter through the passive crossover up front. This is all tuned by Arc Audio’s audiophile grade PS8 processor. Of course, quality components take quality wiring, so Maxxlink steppped up with upgraded V3 4 AWG power wire, VDB3 distribution blocks and upgraded ground wires with VGT2 distribution. This Jeep really does it all. It can pick the kids up from school, demo some tunes at a car show, and then take off into the country to tackle the trials of the trails. One thing’s for sure, this Jeep goes wherever it wants and it thumps all the way there.

ome of us dreamed of being an astronaut or pilot when we were younger. Sean "Pitbull" Baisden didn’t end up behind the controls of an F-22 when he grew up, but he did end up behind the wheel of a Silverado that gets pretty high up with its lift. Before Baisden became the equivalent of a Chevrolet Sky Captain, he honed his craft on his mother’s car. He was pretty irked when she came home from a shop appointment visibly upset because a garage had ripped her off. “I told her, ‘You’ll never have to have your car worked on again by anybody else,’” Baisden says. “From that day on, I fixed her car for her. I’ve been turning wrenches since I was 14.” It didn’t take long before he went from oil
60
PASMAG
16.11 Orca Silverado.indd 1
changes and brake checks to performance mods. Baisden’s first car, a 1970 Chevelle, was the first platform that got him into the supercharging and tuning ways of hot rodding. After tinkering and building big, bad, fast cars, Baisden found himself setting up his own garage. A move to California from Texas turned out to be the next stage of Baisden’s career. In Cali, he found himself drawn to the blend of function and form in the street scene. “I got more into the styling of the vehicle; more lips, big wheels, tires, lowering, etcetera,” Baisden recalls. “I would still do exhaust and supercharging and nitrous and all that stuff, but I definitely got more into the street side of it.” Having a good grip on both sides of the
spectrum, Baisden sought to do something for himself. He fell in love with the new styling of the 2008 Chevy Silverado, and even though he already had the ‘06 model, he decided to make the newly face-lifted 2500HD his own. “The truck, I actually bought brand new in December 2008 as a Christmas present to myself,” Baisden chuckles. “In two weeks, it was lifted, had a complete interior, stereo, gears, exhaust and intake.” In two weeks, Baisden had built up a Silverado that would make any Chevy-head drool. The truck was then shipped to paint where it received a tribal flame paint job in gunmetal grey with candy red flames and suspension components. Now that it was performing and looking good, it was complete, right? Not quite.

“The truck was done for a couple of years and then I wanted to take it to the next level, so I completely re-did it,” he says. Baisden dove into the suspension first. Kelderman four-link systems in the front and rear, as well as AccuAir air suspension all around ensure that the Chevy has the legs for any situation. The AccuAir suspension also gives Baisden three selectable ride heights from inside or outside of the truck from what he calls “ride height” all the way to “show height,” which is 13 inches in lift. Another component that Baisden swapped out was the independent front suspension, which has been converted into a solid front axle set up. “The Chevys, in my opinion, ride the best because of the independent front suspension, but that’s also their weak point if you’re going to four-bar them,” Baisden explains. “The Fords and the Dodges are solid, but they don’t ride as nice as the Chevy. So I fixed the weak link by putting a solid front axle in it and a 13-inch lift.” As a military fanatic, Baisden hoped to one day build a vehicle to carry the theme of a WWII
62

bomber. The Silverado would be that lucky recipient. The old flames were sanded off and each panel of the truck was treated to look like smaller, individual panels. By use of directional sanding and very convincing paint work, the Chevy looks and feels like it’s riveted together. “We ended up using Scotch-Brite and sanding each panel – after we painted it – a different direction and it gave the grain that we were looking for,” Baisden says. “Then we built a six-rivet template with a hole punch and the painter went to town putting all the rivets on the truck.” When Baisden says, “went to town,” he means that his painter went around the truck, hand painting each rivet. Every single one has three steps: black for the rivet itself, white for the light reflection, and shadowing under each of them. There are over 2,000 hand-painted rivets on this truck. “Everybody at the shows just wants to come up and touch it,” laughs Baisden. “They always ask, ‘Is this a wrap?’ I love seeing the reaction from people.”

ESSENTIALS
2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 4X4 Crew Cab Long Bed A subtle touch, but one that Baisden found necessary as the owner of a 2500HD that now looks like a member of an armed forces fleet, are the crosshairs in the fog light bezels. Each one was laser cut and welded in. Oh, and they’re milspec, in case you were wondering. Already looking like the bomb on the outside, Baisden made sure that the inside could blow its occupants away as well. The dash is completely redone and features a gorgeous dual-DIN touchscreen Alpine X009-GM head unit. The front door panels are also customized to hold a tweeter, a 3.5-inch mid, another six-inch mid and a six-inch subwoofer each – all from Focal. If that isn’t enough, the rear doors house tweeters and the 3.5- and six-inch mids. A couple of six-inch subs don’t make a 12, so Baisden installed two
12-inch Focal subwoofers, which fire downward to shake like an airstrike. All of this is connected with Scosche wiring and fed through a Focal 900.1 digital subwoofer amplifier and two 900.6 digital mid-range amplifiers. With a whopping four subwoofers integrated into the system, some may think that it’s a little too bass heavy, but Baisden disagrees. The Focal speakers are as musical as they are pulse pounding. After all, this is his daily driver. “I really just try to stay on functionality,” Baisden says. “I use the truck. It’s functional and it works.” And that’s how it should be. If you need Baisden, he’ll be towing his toys out into the desert, ripping around on the sand, and sitting back with a cold one. After all, a pilot needs to enjoy his time off, too.
