THE BIG SHOW, RIGHT HERE IN YOUR HANDS Photography by

A
nother SEMA show and car season has come and gone, and we’re still sifting through all of the awesome builds, products, and people we saw out in Vegas for the return of in-person SEMA. After the first hiatus in SEMA history, it was great to see the show come roaring back to life with all of the tire smoke and action we’ve come to know and love. In addition to hosting our Season 8 Tuner Battlegrounds champion, Kaylee Crayton, and her FR-S in our booth for 2021, we also got the chance to check out the Global Media Awards new products showcase. We had Jordan Lenssen browse the entire showcase product by product and pick out his top 10 while on site. You’ll find his top 10 picks in this issue, and he breaks down exactly why they’re such cool products. You may have noticed the unique RX-7 and R32 GT-R on the cover. Owned by Chelsie and Cole of Throttle Thrashers Garage in western Canada, these two builds took the crowds of SEMA by storm by climbing the ladder in SEMA’s Battle of the Builders. A big congratulations goes out to them, and we figured there’s no better way to celebrate their success than a double feature! You’ll also find coverage - and the winners of awards - from our Tuning 365 Tour car show stop in Atlanta from last year, as well as a variety of the latest products and builds. As always, thank you for reading. We hope to see you at SEMA with us next year!

TUNING 365 2021 CAR SHOW TOUR AWARD WINNERS
AT FORMULA DRIFT ATLANTA
// Best Lighting presented by Type S
MICHELIN RACEWAY ROAD ATLANTA
STORY BY RANDI BENTIA // PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE VERMONT, ANTONIO LOGAN, CHRIS GOSDA
It was perfect weather for the first stop of our 2021 Tuning 365 Car Show Tour at Formula DRIFT. All were expecting a worldclass drift competition, and while nobody was left disappointed, the same could be said by the collection of modified cars and trucks at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on May 8th. With over 100 registered competitors taking their chance to compete for an Editor's Choice award, and ultimately winning a print feature, our Tuner Battlegrounds online competition was as popular as ever.
First, Marqious Drennon received Editor’s Choice with his 1991 Acura NSX. Our contributing photographers, Lee Vermont and Antonio Logan, who were both on-site, chose Marquios for this award. So shout-out to those dudes for helping us out at the event! For the 2nd Editor’s Choice award, it went to Scott Buwalda and his 1991 Nissan Figaro - a full restoration piece with modern touches. Best Lighting presented by TYPE S Auto went to Rafael Capone with his 2017 Lexus ES300h. We couldn’t see much of his

fter a skipped year of in-person SEMA due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the big show was back with a bang for 2021. Returning to the in-person experience is something we’re sure all attendees were thankful for, as it had been too long without the sights and sounds of SEMA in Las Vegas. With an extra
year of prep time for builders, the heat of everyone’s A-game was to be expected. There were no longer any excuses about the SEMA time crunch! The overall layout of the show remained mostly the same from previous years, with a little bit more spread to accommodate social distancing. A cool new actionpacked addition was the final stage

“SEMA 2021. The largest event held at the Las Vegas Convention Center since the pandemic began shortly after SEMA 2019. We lost many along the road to get to SEMA 2021. We carried them with us as we saw the sights, sounds, and smells of SEMA 2021. SEMA 2021 was a SEMA like none before. Social distancing meant booths were spread further than usual, with planners leaving wide open spaces with seating to rest those tired feet. The ever-present smell of smoking tires hung in the air as people were drawn to the sound of cars burning rubber. SEMA 2021 seemed to be the year of the Ford Bronco, and there seemed to be a general push to promote the Overlanding Experience which took up a large part of the new West Hall. Off Road is in, and one of our favorite vehicles was the Tacozilla displayed by Toyota. If you need to get away, Tacozilla could whisk you away in comfort not provided by Godzilla, Raptor, or whatever mythical name best suits your ride for and adventure. As for adventures at SEMA, Tesla got in the game by going underground and connecting the entire convention center grounds by tunnel. It was very convenient to go from the back of the convention center South Hall to the front of the West Hall in a few minutes, a walk that could take up to 30 minutes. SEMA 2021 took place in the face of many logistical nightmares. Some cars were displayed without wheels because they were stuck on a shipping container still in port. Those who overcame those obstacles and took part in SEMA 2021 set the tone for future SEMA shows. It was great to see many friends at SEMA 2021. We will see you at SEMA 2022.”

of OPTIMA’s Ultimate Street Car Invitational taking place in the Bronze Lot for all to see. While some exhibitors from previous years couldn’t make it, attendees were probably happy with the extra room. An eclectic mix of EVs and combustion engine cars were found in all corners of the show, and of course, trucks were a big attraction as well. PASMAG’s 9th annual Tuner Battlegrounds Champion, Kaylee Crayton, had her 2013 Scion FR-S displayed in our booth, and a bunch of awesome contributors were there on the ground for us, bringing you the latest news and reveals from the show over the week. “SEMA 2021 this year was a bit of a relaxed rush, in being able to make it last minute. Arriving on Tuesday afternoon, I was able to check in and register easily and get starting on checking out the show. First surprise was the streamlined layout, with overseas vendors not on hand. So seeing bigger displays in some cases and nearly half used convention areas was interesting. This meant less walking, but with the West Hall opened up as a new display area - not really. Definitely more walking. Highlights for me were the Battle of the Builders area, air suspension with Accuair, the DUB show booth, Toyo Treadpass area, and Toyo Tires booth in general. Also seeing all the C8 and Bronco variants, and of course, the lifted trucks. Did I get to go to all areas? No, but this year after many years attending I was able to make it to the Ignited show and experience what that was about. Drift practice, and the SEMA cruise, then displays of the top 12 Battle of the Builders and final winner reveal for the public was done. Then followed the exciting drift displays which did not disappoint. I'll definitely be making a point to pace myself and make it to Ignited each year. Organization was also good for the event. Overall the big plus was Tesla’ss underground shuttle between south, central, and west halls. Also what made this show most memorable was meeting the YouTubers I follow, Shmee150, Rich Rebuilds, and Tavarish by pure chance. Seeing Rich's Tesla and Audi, and Tavarish's McLaren 765LT was a main highlight.”

his was probably one of the most talked about builds inside the Toyo Treadpass at SEMA 2021, and for good reason. This isn’t some elaborate wrap job or carbon fiber overlay - the entirety of this R32 GT-R’s exterior is made up of Garage Active carbon fiber panels, and so is most of the interior to match. The weight savings are real! In addition to looking insanely cool, the entire car only weighs 1,375 kg (3,031 lbs). When you consider that the 2.8L HKS stroker RB engine makes 1,000+ horsepower, and it uses an OS Giken OS-88 sequential transmission, this might be the ultimate street Godzilla build. The car was built by Garage Ac-

tive in Japan, but it was just so damn good that they had to bring it to display in the Toyo Treadpass. Other than the awesome carbon fiber pieces, lots of custom and one-off pieces separate this build from the rest. Did I mention the awesome custom wheels? I could go through each of the quality parts on this build like the custom full titanium exhaust or the HKS turbo setup, but what can I say that “1,000 horsepower carbon fiber R32 GT-R” doesn’t already say? This thing is badass. What’s even more impressive is that a red carbon fiber version of this car exists in Japan.

BRIAN SCOTTO´S HILLCLIMB− READY 1990 AUDI COUPE QUATTRO Photography by
Chris Gosda & Gerbie Reyes
nless you’ve avoided the automotive side of the internet entirely for the past two decades, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with Brian Scotto. The Hoonigan Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer purchased his 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro a whopping 17 years ago, and it’s been under the knife onand-off since then. While it may have only been “SEMA-ready” when it was on display for 2021 in the Hoonigan x Toyo Tires booth, the overall build and potential here are more than enough to land it in my top 5. What stands out immediately on first glance, other than the doubleround headlight conversion, is the Prior Design widebody kit. Yes, that’s the same German Prior Design that typically does high end kits for exotics. At some point they decided to make just 40 kits for the Audi Coupe Quattro, and we’re glad they did because this is one of the coolest looking Audi CQs we’ve ever seen. Adding to that Group B style is a set
U
of Rotiform wheels inspired by classic Audi racing wheels, but upsized to 18x12 on all four corners. Perhaps some of the most impressive parts of the build are in the engine bay. Where you once found the signature inline five-cylinder Audi engine at 2.2L, you’re now met with a bored and stroked version that’s up to 2.6L, and subsequently fully built. The turbo is positioned up top and is easy to remove, service, and swap with bigger turbos at will. The current setup can do an easy 700 whp, but the engine should be capable of over 1,000 horsepower if needed.
Set to tackle the hillclimb races across America, including Pike’s Peak, Scotto needed to be able to fit inside a roll cage with room for a helmet and more. Thanks to some impeccable craftsmanship from Rob Parsons, the roll cage is tightly fit against the A-pillars and roof, something big tall guys like myself and Scotto will appreciate. Overall, the amount of motorsport engineering that went into this car is hard to cover in the space we have allotted, but we’re positive you’ll see more of this car if you keep your eyes on Hoonigan and its respective partners over the next year.

CHRIS JOHNSTON´S TIME ATTACK FD3S RX−7 Photography by
Chris Gosda, Chris Oneal
here were a lot of FD RX-7 builds to admire at SEMA 2021, and all of them were special in their own way. It certainly wasn’t easy to pick a favorite from the bunch, but something about Chris Johnston’s Time Attack FD3S. Inspired by the Japanese time attack scene covered by Narita Dogfight, as well as his love for 90s JDM, this 1993 FD from the Fortune Auto booth checks all the boxes for me. When he lost an apex seal in 2015, the car was going to be down for a while, and he used that opportunity to plan out the build exactly the way he wanted it. He got his first rough ideas of how it would look by playing around with design options in Forza and Gran Turismo video games, and fine tuned his idea over time as he gathered parts and made changes to the overall vision. As it came together, his lifelong dream of unveiling the car at the SEMA show started to become a possibility.

A properly put together 13b REW with a half bridge port built by Eccentric Motorsports serves as the heart of the FD, with a Borg Warner EFR 8374 EWG turbo doing some of the heavy lifting to make good power. Part of what makes the FD stand out among the rest of the RX-7 builds is the beautiful RE Amemiya kit and accessories like the carbon fiber tail light cover. A healthy dosage of R Magic add-ons go the distance as well. The combination of the properly built 13b, the aggressive time attack styling, and all of the incredible work throughout makes this an easy favorite. There’s a lot to love here.

e got a closer look at this Lexus GS300 build in one of our video features for Tuning365, and I’m glad we did. Lately I’ve found myself appreciating the Lexus GS platform more and more, but I never expected to see something like this. This is a full blown time attack GS300, stripped and gutted, and built with awesome fabrication skills. One look at this car and you can tell that it’s all business. Making the extra power is a 2JZ-GTE VVT-i engine from a Toyota Aristo, bolstered by a CompTurbo CT379S-6467 turbocharger and supporting fuel system mods. Being a full time attack build, it also features a dry sump kit from Ross Performance, JiffyTite quick-release fittings, and a fuel cell with dual fuel pumps. ing DCT adapter system is the DCT transmission out of a BMW E92 M3. Engine tuning is handled on Haltech’s Nexus R5 ECU, and DCT management is handled by way of HTG Tuning’s DCT gearbox control unit. From the outside, it’s obvious this car is made for the circuit. If the centerlock RVL IVY Corsa wheels didn’t give it away, the aggressive front aero and a carbon fiber roof courtesy of Attacking The Clock Racing, as well as modified versions of SerialNine’s BREED overfender kit, hood and trunk are all among the most noticeable. Not to mention the enormous APR GT-1000 Dual Element chassis-mounted wing. All in, this is a pretty unorthodox choice for a time attack platform, and we’re all for it. The fabrication throughout is impressive, and it looks badass. We can’t wait to see Graves smashing laps in this thing.

his is another build that we got a closer look at with a video feature during our Tuning365 SEMA episodes, and how could we not? It’s not a stretch to say this might be the cleanest modified 300ZX we’ve ever seen, with lots of quality engine work to boot. Seeing this level of attention to detail in such a niche and rare chassis is something special. Since it’s in the Toyo Treadpass, you can already assume a certain level of quality, but this 1986 Nissan goes above and beyond in a few ways. Starting in the engine bay, a section which is no doubt a primary focus of this build, we’re treated to a beautifully assembled naturally aspirated RB build that looks to be floating in the perfectly shaved and wire-tucked bay. The block is from an RB25, and the head is a ported and polished RB26DETT head with a modified combustion chamber. A catalogue of quality internal parts make up the insides of both halves of the engine, and custom titanium parts complement the HNengineering carbon kevlar velocity stacks nicely. This ‘86 ZX is built to drive, so the rear subframe has been swapped out in favor of one from an S14 240sx. Techno Toy Tuning takes care of the front suspension arms, with Part Shop Max components for the rear,

GOOBI GLASS Every now and then a product comes along and we think, ‘Wow, this could be big.’ Goobi Glass is one of those things. The concept is simple: colored automotive glass that’s manufactured to order and available in virtually any color you choose 18,000 to be exact, but it’s hard to believe something like this hasn’t existed until its formal debut at SEMA. The world’s first patent technology for automotive glass, Goobi Glass is rooted in founder Sir C. Kingsley’s long knowledge of chromotherapy and the benefits of colour, and a lack of lasting or permanent solutions in the automotive industry. Able to manufacture anything from sunroofs to C-pillar windows using heat-stable colorants for a lasting product, Goobi Glass is also legal, so long as the color tint and intensity meets your jurisdiction’s tinting laws. Goobi opens the window (pun intended) to a new era of automotive customization, with some exciting potential for future design and application developments.
INTEGRATED ENGINEERING Carbon Fiber Intake System for Audi B9 S4, S5 & RS5, and C7 S6, S7 & RS7 Ask for the best manufacturers in Audi tuning, and Integrated Engineering will always be part of the list. With an update for B9 and C7 S and RS platforms, IE has brought their tried-and-tested carbon fiber intake systems to the latest generation of quattros. Intakes take a hard hit in countless forums for their misaligned costto-benefit ratio, but the truth is, they’re an integral upgrade for anyone upgrading their powertrain, if for no other reason than they help your engine breathe better, cleaner, and cooler. Even more, IE states added power gains of 16 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque.

TURBOSMART ESG50 Electronic StraightGate50 Turbosmart says the StraightGate50 allows for “truly advanced boost control strategies with virtually no limits,” and given the specs and 20-year history of wastegate technology packed into this thing, it’s hard to argue that the ESG50 isn’t a gamechanger. Liquid cooled with actuator temperature and valve position sensors, the 50mm fully electronic butterfly setup requires no hoses, no spring, no diaphragm or boost reference and features a zero back-drive gearbox to combat high drive pressures for uncompromised control throughout the entire boost range. Admittedly, the cost of the ESG50 will scare away the majority of consumers, but for those wanting the ultimate in performance and fine tuning, it’s an ingenious solution manufactured by the industry’s best.
KW SUSPENSIONS Variant 5 High Performance 4-Way Adjustable Coilovers When a suspension manufacturer with a history like KW is able to stir the pot on suspension news, it must be a big deal – and with the new Variant 5 High Performance Adjustable Coilover, it is. Building on their racing heritage once again, KW has brought that performance and reliability back to the streets with 4-way technology that gives drivers even further control via separate high-speed and low-speed damping adjustments. The result is a yet another incredible KW package that offers the ultimate in track tuning, while being even more tunable and street friendly for varying road conditions and surfaces. (*Side note: I’ve been surprised to hear how many people don’t know ST Suspensions is owned by KW. I’d be remiss to say that if KWs seem like too much from an application or pricing perspective, STs are a fantastic option using much of the same internal technologies and robust external construction as their bigger brother, at a fraction of the cost.)

LINGENFELTER PERFORMANCE ENGINEERING C8 LT2 Performance Design Carbon pTR Intake Manifold System The C8 Corvette was undoubtedly the most popular car at SEMA this year, so when you see names like Lingenfelter and Corvette on a new product, it’s impossible not to get interested. We all know Lingenfelter’s long history of Corvette and Chevy performance engineering products, and this LT2 Performance Design Carbon pTR intake manifold system is the latest in the company’s modern era. The perfectly-laid carbon fibre plenum is a sight to behold, and its hassle-free installation using factory connectors and zero calibration is the icing on the cake for a system that’s been tested up to 50 PSI and adds up to 25 hp out of the box (with 95mm throttle body). Comes with port injection provisions already built-in and optional fuel rails. It’s really a no-brainer for anyone looking to get the most out of their Vette.
RETROSOUND Denver Radio This is a great new product because it helps builders bring even the most peculiar vintage radio setups into modern day. The Denver is a full head unit replacement for smaller-than-typical openings at just 3.5 inches wide by 1.5 inches tall, bringing fully modern technology to hundreds of ’60 and ‘70s classic cars, including a long list of GM, Chevrolet, International, and import vehicles. The Denver is available in black or chrome, with rounded edges and push-buttons for a truly authentic look and feel, while also preserving your original dash. +1 for being a great sleeper solution for applications where originality is king.

NATURAL NIRTROUS Founder Dustin Woolf has been building cars since he was 14, and taking his experience with ice bags at the drag strip, has come up with an entirely new product to create a true cold air intake solution – ice cold in fact. Natural Nitrous uses zero nitrous, but instead is a stand-alone refrigerated induction system that uses a dual circuit, double-coil design to drastically cool the air charge and dehumidify moisture, thus creating more dense air, increasing horsepower and lowering emissions due to the complete burn of fuel. Again, genius!
VICTOR RACING ACT-C8 Active Aero Kits When I walked by the DRR1 display for the first time, admittedly I didn’t know exactly what they were showing, because all I saw was a C8 Corvette. Little did I know it was the world’s first active-aero C8. Yes, a niche feat to claim, but the market on these cars is so large, and this product so unique, that it got my vote purely for instinctual innovation and future platform potential. Remember when the C7 debuted with an adjustable rear wing plate on its track-bred Z06, and how big of a deal that feature was? Victor Racing has just taken the new-gen C8 and pushed it into yet another generation. The ACT-C8 “Smart Active Wing” uses a 70-inch carbon fiber airfoil controlled by dual fast-acting actuators for variable downforce. By simply connecting 12V power, the onboard sensors and software will automatically position the wing for five different positions including aerobraking and DRS. Yes, a drag reduction system – from one of the three user programmable presets. Imagine asking your other buddies if their car has DRS?! That alone is reason enough to make this a top pick.

Working Thin & Loud KICKER’S SOLUTION TO MORE BOOM WITH LESS ROOM
For decades, trucks were notoriously hard to add any real bass to. Why? The answer is air.
44
PASMAG
imply put, subs need air to move. Less movement usually means you won’t get deep bass unless you add significantly more power to the sub. That means the sub has to be beefier, which snowballs into a bigger amp to drive it. Naturally, all this extra power (and power handling) means more cost. Enter the concept of a thin sub. “Trucks were the motivating reason for us wanting to do a shallow sub,” recalled Aaron Surratt, KICKER’s New Product Development Manager. “We
S
#169 // SEMA // TRUCKS 11
talked about doing it for years. It was out of necessity: we wanted to fit subs in these tight spaces.” With the goal of big bass behind a truck seat, KICKER’s acoustic and mechanical engineers got to work making what would ultimately be the CompRT thin sub. KICKER wanted to solve the thin sub puzzle without breaking the bank. Mechanical Engineering Manger Kyle Ambrose was among those tasked with making it a reality. “Shallow subwoofers have been out for a while, but some are really expensive. We
wanted something more mid-range,” Ambrose explained. “We knew we wanted to stick with a ceramic motor (not neodymium) and would have to not add a lot of materials or super huge voice coils. That just increases your costs astronomically.” One of the keys to getting shallow on the CompRT was the bumped top plate, according to Ambrose. “Once we adopted that concept, it was a question of getting the suspension sunk down far enough that we were eliminating mounting depth,
yet maintaining clearances for the excursions we wanted.” Now that the woofer could move further without needing additional depth, the frame of the sub could be kept exceedingly shallow. In fact, the 12-inch version of the driver is under four inches deep, and still takes 600 watts of power (RMS rating). It was thin. It was loud. Now it was time to get the bass even deeper. Enter the CompRT loaded enclosure, equipped with a passive radiator. The near century-old concept of a radiator is similar to that of a port, delivering big-box sound yet keeping the enclosure exceedingly thin. “We decided to add a passive radiator to make it play deeper. We started playing with the width of the enclosure to accept the radiator, which made it sound much more like a big enclosure,” said Mr. Surratt. “We custom weighted the radiators for each CompRT enclosure. We altered cone weight, surround thickness and compliance to get just the right amount of resistance. We tried several versions of the radiator before we were happy, but the result was
worth it. We got a very thin enclosure to deliver far bigger bass, like a big box would.” KICKER’s development and testing process often involves a head-to-head reality check versus the competition, and the thin enclosure was no exception. After several tests both in the lab and in-car, Engineers and Project Managers alike were all happy with the looks, sound and reliability
of the loaded enclosure. The CompRT was born. Finding that bump in your truck is now not only achievable, but readily so. Whether you want a slick custom enclosure or one that fits right behind (or under) that back seat of your truck – you’ve got options. The CompRT raw sub and its square cousin the L7T are loud, nearly invisible, and universally awesome.
“WE TALKED ABOUT DOING IT FOR YEARS. IT WAS OUT OF NECESSITY: WE WANTED TO FIT SUBS IN THESE TIGHT SPACES.”

Tucked away in an alley of Penticton, BC, you’ll find partners Chelsie Losnoski and Cole Marten working away on a variety of projects at any given hour on any given day. The two of them make up Throttle Thrashers Garage - a shop that dabbles in a little bit of everything, but made its name rescuing and restoring R32 Skylines. Marten does a lot of the fabrication, and Lesnoski manages the body and painting side of things. With just the two of them running the shop, they’re quite the dynamic duo!
S
ome long time readers may recognize Losnoski’s RBpowered FR-S from years past, which was already a crazy and impressive build, but the two of them individually stepped up their game for SEMA 2021 with even more outside-the-box projects. Marten’s ongoing project leading up to the big show was his LHD-swapped 1991 R32 Skyline GT-R, and Lesnoski had her RX-7 FD3S in mind with big plans to shake up the game. Sitting out of SEMA 2020 due to the pandemic, the pair of them had some extra time to up the ante.
The results of their hard work became two of the most talked about builds inside SEMA 2021, and for good reason. Unconventional engine swaps were among the most notable modifications to each. Marten’s R32 engine bay boasts the iconic 2JZ, and surprisingly enough maintains the vehicle’s AWD drivetrain. Lesnoski’s RX-7 takes things even further - it’s the world’s first rearengine Audi 2.7L V6-swapped RX-7 FD. In fact, it might be the world’s first rearengine Audi 2.7L V6-swapped anything! The two of them truly delivered on uniqueness in their builds.
A closer look at Marten’s R32 Skyline reveals just how much the car has been altered. Veilside body panels like the front fenders, rear bumper, side skirts, and molded quarter panels stand out right away thanks to the car’s beautiful dark green paint job. Carbon fiber vents are found throughout the exterior, also molded into their respective panels. The front fenders are adorned by vents from the Ford Mustang, and the custom hood also features ventilation on the hood scoop in carbon fiber. The carbon fiber accents continue by way of the front lip, grille, lower skirts, and

the roof wing. ZLED tail lights and N1 headlights with retrofitted halo rings round out the entire look. Inside the Skyline, you’re met with an unfamiliar LHD setup. A custom dash and center console shift driver’s position to the proper North American side, and a steering rack from a 240sx bridges the new steering wheel position to the custom front subframe. Custom door cards and the majority of the interior is reupholstered beautifully in suede with yellow stitching, which matches the roll cage, as well as the hardware on his 17-inch Work Equip 05 wheels.
Sparco seats, a steering wheel, and shift knob make up the driver’s position, PRP Racing harnesses - in yellow of course - hold driver and passenger snugly in place. Of course, we can’t talk about Marten’s Skyline without mentioning its wild drivetrain. The 2JZ itself is built to the nines from the bottom up, and boasts a GReddy T88-34D turbo. Keeping the R32’s AWD intact with the 2JZ required a custom AWD oil pan conversion, and custom transmission adapter to the RB transmission, which has been raised in a modified transmission tunnel. The clutch kit from Action Clutch employs the best of both worlds: a 2JZ flywheel mated to an RB pressure plate and RB splined disc. With a custom firewall and a shaved bellhousing, the entire drivetrain setup fits nicely beneath the R32.

On the other side of the garage, you’ll find Lesnoski’s RX-7 - a true Frankenstein build in its own right. Certainly the world’s first RX-7 with a rear-mounted Audi 2.7L twin-turbo engine, there’s more than meets the eye at first glance, but that first glance is still appealing. A custom metal widebody with integrated ducting all over radically transforms the shape of the FD while staying true to its original form. Carbon fiber accents are found across the exterior, and a custom two-tone brown paint job makes every body modification pop. Custom peek-a-boo headlights and retrofitted triple-X taillights give the RX-7 a futuristic look. Like Marten’s R32, Losnoski’s FD features a beautifully reupholstered interior with TTG stitching on the seats so you know just who built this thing. The entire cabin is made up of custom pieces, featuring carbon fiber and

ETHAN MULLANI’S JOURNEY TO BUILD A 4RUNNER FIT FOR HOUSTON, TEXAS Story and photography by
Bill Braun
E
than Mullani’s 1996 Toyota 4Runner has an enviable distinction: it’s the biggest in the world. The working definition of “built not bought,” Mullani transformed it into a green and black beast (an homage to the Kawasaki Ninja.) “I got the truck when I turned 16,” Mullani recalled. “I had never thought of going anywhere with a big tire or lift kit. I had always loved the look of the 4Runner, especially the third generation.” Unlike so many projects that start out with a vision even before the truck gets off the lot, Mullani’s Toyota stayed stock for a decade before his ideas, and the transformation itself, started to take shape. “After seeing all the big trucks on the road, it just got to me,” He says. “Why can't there be a lift kit for this 4Runner? The most I could do is a little three-inch spacer on top of the coils. I could run some 285's, which was about a 33-inch tire. There was nobody that made anything bigger, which just ate me up. Finally, me and my friends said let's tear this thing down from the frame down. Let's build it as big as we want on the lift.”

4RUNNER For Ethan, four-wheel drive was more than a spec – it’s a mandatory part of the build. “I live in Houston, TX. We have a lot of mud, and a lot of weather, so four-wheel drive is big for us. No way I was going to take my prized possession that was a fourwheel drive and make it a two-wheel drive just because I wanted big tires. There had to be a way to keep it fourwheel drive.” Ethan and his friends pulled the factory suspension off the truck. With every click of the lift, the next generation of this 4Runner began to form. Now suspended six feet off the ground, they got to the angle they needed to use the 42-degree front drive shaft with a triple CV from High Angle Driveline. “We were able to achieve enough clearance to run

54-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Tires with a set of handmade 18-inch Atlas leaf springs.” A custom six-inch shackle, and a four-inch body lift from Russ Brooks soon followed, as did a Pro Comp Dual reservoir shock system that was custom painted to match. A set of American Force 20-inch Switch wheels were added, custom engraved with 2BIG4U logo in it. A straight axle conversion was next for the build. A Dana 44 was used off a Jeep Grand Wagoneer. “The 44 was the right length for what I wanted. A Dana 60 is common, but I knew I was going to build the axle anyway. I have big, upgraded gears in it with Yukon splines, a Chromoly shaft and Detroit locker front and rear. I also used a triple CV front drive shaft from High Angle Driveline in California. It’s built like a 60 so they can take a beating from those big tires.” With the suspension set, it was time to give the body some love. An AWC custom grill was added with a 24inch LED light bar in it, while the HID

Factory green halo lights with demon eyes were used in the front headlights. A custom Shockworks front bumper was adorned with a pair of monster hooks, and color matched to the green accents of the truck.
Inspired by the Kawasaki Ninja, Ethan asked Pat Maxwell to do the custom paint on the truck with GM Black, with Kawasaki Candy Lime Green accent. To get the colors right, the PPG paint was epoxy primed and
sealed, then six coats of PPG clear were added. The interior door inserts and headliner are covered with black Ostrich suede, while the seats are a color matched Katzkin leather with lime green accent stitching. Under the hood, six Yellow Top Optima batteries deliver power to the 4Runner, accompanied by a 300 amp alternator by DC power. A Pioneer CD/DVD player sends the tunes to a full Kicker Audio system, with a pair of KX2400 amplifiers dedicated to bass. Each sub amp goes to a Kicker Q Class L7 12-inch subwoofer,
while four Kicker KX400.2 amplifiers power the Q Class mid and high range 10-speaker setup, both in the truck and in a rhino-lined enclosure under the back bumper, equipped with a pair of Kicker Q Class 6x9-inch coaxial speakers. The stock 3.4L V6 motor was ported and polished, then equipped with K&N intake. A custom tune from Toyota added “a bit more pep to it.” “I started coming to the car show scene when I first built the custom lift in 2000,” Mullani recalled. “I knew then I had a vision. I had a lot of friends that had been in the scene for a while. Being
a spectator for all those years, I finally said I had to jump in it. At first you want to get the trophies. You want to have the first place or best of show. We got to that level and it was great, but you realize over time there really is more to it than just the hardware. Back when I started there were no kids. We were all in high school, partying. Now it’s twenty years later and I see those same guys with kids of their own at the show. In fact, you’ll see a lot of kids come up to the 4Runner and want to get pictures. I invite them to sit in the vehicle. I give demos to them. I just want to see the smiles on their faces and inspire them.” Mullani’s heartfelt belief is in the value of the lifestyle, and the family it garners, now and in the future. “It’s a legacy. It’s the family and the culture. Hanging out, talking about different builds. For me, if my builds inspire the next generation to build something cool – I don’t care of it's a skateboard, bicycle, car, truck, whatever it is – if I can inspire one person, then I feel like my time here is well-spent.”

ohn Wargo of The Custom Shop has a history of impressive and mind-blowing SEMA builds over two decades, and we were thrilled to see him back this year with an incredible truck built for a customer named Josh Spicer. The job was simple enough: Spicer asked Wargo and The Custom Shop to produce a C10 like no one had ever seen. He provided The Custom Shop with the cab and chassis, and told them to go nuts. While Wargo got to work on designing and rendering to bring the vision to life, they stripped the truck down to bare metal. Once they had the
Chris Gosda
truck’s rusty spots taken care of and the entire chassis cleaned up, shaved drip rails, flush glass, a stretched bed and tightened gaps were among the first priorities. The hood was treated to a ZL1-inspired hood scoop covered in copper weave carbon fiber, and a ZR1-style lexan window was put in to showcase the work beneath the hood even when it was closed. The Corvette-inspired style cues continued from there with Z06-style side scoops molded into the bed. The custom billet and copper carbon fiber bed floor is hooked up to a motorized mechanism that allows it to lift up and expose the custom frame beneath.
The tailgate itself is also motorized, as is the active billet spoiler on top of it. Beneath that, a custom diffuser serves as an exit point for the custom exhaust system. That exhaust is routed from the P1X procharged Ohio Speed LS3 in the engine bay. Yeah, this thing is wild. Inside and out, you can see the expertise of Wargo and The Custom Shop on full display. From the audio install, to the lighting, and even the little details like the ghosted checkers and C10 silhouette hidden throughout the truck - everything about this build is the best that SEMA has to offer. We’re positive that Spicer is happy he chose this builder for his special project.

he DeBerti father-son duo from North Carolina has been building badass trucks - among other things - for years now. You may recall their wild “Performance Truck” from a previous year, an absolutely insane, balls-to-the-wall widebody Toyota Tacoma powered by a NASCAR V8. This year they aimed to do something even crazier, and by all accounts they seem to have delivered, with one of the most talked about trucks of the 2021 SEMA show. Dubbed “The C10 Slayer,” this build isn’t your ordinary C10 by any stretch of the imagination. Jaws dropped at the big unveiling, and for good reason. There isn’t an aspect of this truck that doesn’t command your attention. out of the hood, there’s a lot to take in. For those unfamiliar with the duo, Doug DeBerti and his son Brad have been building cool things as long as Brad can remember. He practically grew up in the shop! They’ve accumulated numerous accolades at SEMA over the years, and this year they vowed to up the ante. The stretched chassis for the C10 Slayer was built between their shop and Scott’s Hotrods ‘n Customs. The axles in the rear are tandem axles, custom built by the DeBerti boys, and hung with a parallel four-link system. Cool suspension work includes a set of HydroShox hydraulic-over-springs. Coming into SEMA 2021, the DeBerti boys said they wanted to build something that would be remembered. We reckon a 1,000 horsepower 6-wheeled monster like this will do the trick. People will be talking about this machine for years to come!

his is the first time an auto manufacturer’s own build has made one of our top choice lists, but in this case, Toyota deserves the recognition for the Tacozilla build. Built on a Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport by Toyota’s Motorsports garage, the Tacozilla’s camper portion contains a full bathroom and kitchen, and boasts an interior standing room that can accommodate people over six feet tall. The camper cabin features a beautiful 3D-printed kitchen table that doubles as backlit wall art when it's stored in order to convert its space into more sleeping room. Tacozilla to navigate off-road trails with camper intact. The Tacoma itself is lifted about two inches for extra ground clearance, and it now sits on bronze TRD wheels wrapped in 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires. Less is more when it comes to a reliable off-road overlander. An extra battery was installed in the engine bay to power all of the additional upgrades. The entire thing is finished off with a retro 1960s-1970s yellow, orange, and bronze color scheme inspired by the Toyota campers of those eras. While this truck is only a prototype, we hope this serves as inspiration for other Toyota overlander builds. Toyota knows their trucks are a popular choice in that scene, and they knocked it out of the park with Tacozilla. We love everything about it.
