Every year, OPTIMA Batteries hosts the OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational - a multi-stage event that spans several days, in which performance-built street car owners compete for the highest accolade: The Ultimate Street Car. 2021 marked the OUSCI’s first time with one of their challenges taking place at SEMA. The Peak Performance Challenge was hosted in front of a crowd in the aptly named OPTIMA Batteries Bronze Lot.

fter all was said and done, and the points for each challenge were tallied, only one driver and his car stood atop the OPTIMA podium, and that driver was Jake Rozelle with his 2003 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Corvette fans throughout the audience rejoiced with sweet vindication. As you might expect,
winning the entire 2021 OUSCI championship means Rozelle’s Z06 is no factory model with simple bolt-ons. The heart of Rozelle’s ‘Vette is a Lingenfelter Eliminator Series 800 horsepower LS7 with a sleeved block and a fully forged rotating assembly. The Lingenfelter LS7’s air flow is bolstered thanks to a Performance Design carbon fiber intake, a Nick

Williams 103mm throttle body, and 4.5-inch piping throughout, with ducting for added cooling effect. It also features a Dailey belt-driven dry sump mated to a Peterson 10-quart sump tank, and the entire setup runs on Ignite Red E90 fuel to get the most out of the potent V8. Power is routed through the drivetrain by way of a Centerforce triple disc clutch kit with a customized solid torque tube to remove vibration, through the T6060 transmission, and converging in a C6 ZR1 differential which has an OS Giken limited slip inside - and ZR1 axles to turn the 18inch Forgeline VX1R wheels wrapped in Yokohama A052 tires, which is only the beginning of the Corvette’s improved handling prowess. Suspension and handling is further enhanced thanks to a set
of JRi double adjustable coilovers with remote reservoirs, as well as LG Motorsports billet drop spindles, which lower the center of gravity and keep suspension geometry balanced. In order to accommodate the ZR1 differential and transmission, the rear subframe is custom built to hold C5 suspension components. When he started building, Rozelle originally intended to build the ulti-
mate daily driver. Today, he stands as the champion with the Ultimate Street Car, just a few years into modifying his Corvette and driving it hard. Inspired by Pro-Touring, Rozelle has achieved the pinnacle of performance-capable street cars that can still take his lady out to dinner when they feel like taking it, and that’s what OPTIMA’s Ultimate Street Car Invitational is all about. It’s not a bird, it’s not a plane - it’s Sherwin Pacquette in his awesome hillclimb-built Mitsubishi Evolution with the EXEDY livery.

ased out of New York City, Pacquette took a liking to racing early on in his life, as he entered the field as a young racer looking to make a name for himself out there. After attending a couple car shows with his newly acquired Evo X, he decided that car shows weren’t for him. He bought the car to be driven after all! Focusing on honing his own driver skills above all else, the Evo is built to a reasonable power level. With a stock turbo bolstered by Mishimoto and AMS bolt-ons, the 4B11T engine
puts down a respectable 362 wheel horsepower to all wheels, bellowing its signature song through a Tomei titanium exhaust. Ensuring that power makes it through the drivetrain efficiently, as well as ensuring it holds up for some longevity in the face of abuse, is EXEDY’s Hyper twin disc clutch kit a popular choice among motorsports enthusiasts who also appreciate some street use. see over its lifetime, and the exterior livery lets spectators know exactly what's up. Just about every aspect of this Evo’s build sheet is performance oriented, but Pacquette doesn’t skip over style just because it’s a racecar. The Konig Hypergram wheels are something he once saw on James Houghton’s time attack Type R, and immediately fell in love with. The lightweight flow-formed construction combined with the style is everything he wanted in a wheel, so he got himself an 18x11 square set for the Evo X. Wrapped in Valino VR08GP tires, the handling of the car was greatly improved, and only got better with the addition of Fortune Auto’s 510 coilovers and Whiteline Suspension goodies. After a few track days, Pacquette started to learn the ins and outs of his build, and his driving skills began to improve alongside the car itself. As his racing career started to take

change to the Evo’s already aggressive exterior. The front bumper is from Proteon Aero, who also supplies the side skirts, and features a headlight delete. Professional Awesome supplied diffusers, fender vents, side blocks, and the rods which hold the large alumilite custom splitter in place - something Pacquette is happy to show off the durability and strength of by standing atop it at any time. In the
rear you’ll find a Varis version 2 rear bumper complementing the aggressive looks, and an Aero Motions carbon fiber wing to tie it all together. All in, the car is a simply built racecar that focuses on reliability and honing driver skill - a solid recipe for success in the hillclimb world. “I personally feel that I chose just the perfect platform for hillclimb,” says Pacquette. “With the AWD system of the Evo, it’s a killer at the hills - even at the power levels I am at now. I may keep that power a bit
longer, only because I still feel I have so much to learn and so much more to push the car to its limits. I honestly want to focus more on becoming a better driver - not just to push my own limits, but the car's as well.” Whatever direction this build continues to climb, pun intended, we are along for the ride. The Formula Drift Pro grid is a competitive field to say the least. With more than 30 drivers competing at the highest levels of drifting in motorsports, standing out from the field of competitors can be a difficult task - especially as a privateer. Through a combination of impeccable style, a badass build, and a cult following, Ryan Litteral has managed to do just that. As the self-appointed general of the “RB Army,” Litteral is blazing the trail for competitive RB engine builds at the highest level.
I
t’s important to preface all of this with the disclaimer that Litteral didn’t have the best season in Formula Drift this past year due to a variety of factors, but the steps he and his team have taken, and the improvements they’ve made along the way do paint a picture of a very exciting future for the Formula Drift and Gridlife driver and his car, the RB26-swapped 1999 Nissan Silvia you see here. If style is a big focus of your professional drifting campaign, it’s hard to find a better chassis choice than the S15. If you’ve been following Litteral for a while, you’ll already know he was in a similarly styled S14 before this, but the S15 is the next logical step in the style and engineering department, so he made the jump for a new competition car. A 2F Performance body kit with LFC quarter panels, Origin Lab +75mm front fenders, a Car Modify Wonder hood, and GKTech mirrors go the distance in making the Silvia look the part. The awesome livery - perhaps one of the best looking in all of Formula Drift, admired by fans and other drivers alike - is just the icing on the cake.

Proper stance is achieved thanks to Feal Suspension coilovers, which are equal parts performance and style. Of course, style is only half the battle when it comes to competing at these levels. Having built RB engines for previous cars of his in the past, the RB is a platform Litteral is comfortable working on, but he knows there are no shortcuts and no half-assing anything on older engines in these upper echelons of drifting and power. By aligning himself with reputable brands that he trusts, he was able to tackle the monumental

task of preparing a Formula Drift ready RB26. The single-turbo RB26 in Litteral’s S15 makes a potent 903 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, largely thanks to a Borg Warner 9280 EFR turbo which is mounted to a Fuse manifold, as well as a supporting fuel system. The engine itself is built to the nines. A Bullet Racing Engineering billet RB26 block is the foundation for the whole build, and quality internals like a Callies Compstar crankshaft, Manley Turbo Tuff rods, and custom Mahle pistons do a lot of the heavy

lifting. An advanced Supertech valvetrain with Inconel exhaust valves and black nitride intake valves is a nice touch. The whole setup, which is impressive from top to bottom, sings its signature RB song through a 3.5-inch exhaust from DC Sports. Power delivery is handled by Clutch Masters’ FX1000 clutch kit, but that’s hardly the most exciting piece of the drivetrain. Lightning-quick shifts come courtesy of a 6XD billet 6-speed sequential transmission, and we wish we could include sound clips in print so you could experience the noises this car makes. You’ll have to consult the internet for that one. Power makes its way to a Winters quick-change rear end to spin those Heritage wheels wrapped in GT Radial Champiro SX2RS tires. Slowing the car down during left-foot braking events is a set of Powerstop 370Z Nismo brakes, mounted up via custom bracketry.

- ESSENTIALS Reading through the spec list of this S15 paints a picture of an absolute animal of a machine, and Litteral confirmed that when we spoke to him. “This car is just so animal in every way. The chassis is extremely responsive and accurate, and the engine pulls forever - with a redline of 9200 rpm and armed with a Borg Warner 9280 EFR at 32 psi, it pulls the entire way,” he says. “Dialing in the grip of the new GT Radial Champiro SX2RS thanks to Feal Suspension and Wisefab, it’s truly on rails and throws you back in the seat hard. With that being said it all equates to a very confidence inspiring driving experience.” With the 2021 season behind him, and lessons in hand going into the next season, Litteral is looking forward to his chance to prove to the world that his vision can hang with the highest caliber of cars on the Formula Drift grid. “This year was a trying year for myself and my team,” he tells us. “It definitely wasn’t easy, but we’re proud of the progress made and we are looking forward to kicking some ass on grid at Formula D in 2022. For many years, Advanced Clutch Technology has been at the forefront of the performance clutch market. They stay on top of the game by focusing on market research and development in the early stages of new products, and that’s exactly how the Mod-Twin clutches came to be.
W
hen developing a twin disc clutch for the Subaru WRX STi and Mitsubishi Evolution platforms, they knew that big power four-cylinder engines would have a lot of torsional vibration, which is notoriously hard on clutches especially hard on splines in the hubs. In their market research, ACT noticed that a lot of aftermarket options were race clutches adapted for street use, or clutches with significant trade-offs such as short clutch life due to wearing down of the splines, harsh engagements, low heat capacity, slow shifting which could be hard on transmissions, and pull to push conversions. The initial problem they found was that it was too difficult to get to spring centered hubs in such a small space between the turbo four-cylinder engines and their transmissions while adequately reducing torsional vibrations. The solution came in the form of an industry mould-breaker: The ACT Mod-Twin, a modular clutch kit in which both friction plates mount to one Mono-Drive hub. The modular kit allows customers to customize their clutch kit to their needs, as well as easily replace components in the event of wear. You can choose either organic or six-puck style friction materials, as well as

choose between a spring center or a solid center Mono-Drive hub. All wear surfaces are hardened to withstand the abuse we all know and love ACT clutches for, and each kit is entirely rebuildable. ACT’s requirements for the kit were simple enough: It had to hold big power, have good heat capacity, provide smooth and clean shifting, and be durable. Additionally, it also had to have a good pedal feel and engagement characteristics, and offer extended life on friction materials and the spline. It was an absolute must that the Mod-Twin be a pull type clutch, only use one hub, and be able to offer sprung or solid centers. Needless to say, the result has been a resounding success.
