T
he origins of the Scion brand grew out of parent company Toyota’s desire to capture a younger North American car-buying demographic. Toyota, a brand typically associated with a more mature crowd, had largely been unable to capture the attention of more youthful consumers. Initial efforts, such as Project Genesis in 1999 (which included such models as the Toyota Echo, MR-2 and Celica), failed to produce strong sales figures. With its second attempt (Project Exodus), Toyota enlisted the services of digital design company Fresh Machine to help develop a new brand. Executives hoped the new vision would be embraced from the start – this was the beginning of Scion.

In 2003, Scion’s first year, there were only two models: the xA and the xB. The xA was a compact and rather vanilla offering, but the xB was something totally different – boxy and bold, offering an exciting look at things to come. Internally, Toyota executives were aware that an expanded model lineup would be required in order to keep up with a growing customer base. Today, Scion’s lineup includes five
models and Toyota has managed to achieve what it was looking to accomplish with Scion: introducing younger buyers to its brand family. The median age of a Toyota customer is 54, but at Scion it’s just 39. What makes Scion so different from other manufacturers is the manner in which its cars are sold. Although Scion models can be found in Toyota dealerships, the
brand is separated into its own boutique-like department. Scions are also available in just one trim level which helps to simplify the buying process. Being packaged in this way doesn’t make them any less customizable, however. In fact, buyers have a wealth of custom Scion and optional TRD parts and accessories to choose from, including subwoofers, body kits and custom exhausts. When Formula Drift drivers began piloting Scions, whether heavily modified or not, it helped to legitimize the brand in the custom car community. Being embraced by the FD community has also served to elevate the brand as a premier platform for rear-wheel drive conversions, engine swaps, chop tops and more.

Similar to the origins of the xB, the ist Concept was based on the first gen Toyota Vitz/Platz platform, designed to offer the flexibility of larger SUVs with the advantage of better fuel economy from a smaller vehicle. To match that mantra, the ist was equipped with a 1.3L 2NZ-FE or 1.5L 1NZ-FE I4 engine. 2003
xA
Introduced alongside the xB wagon in California, the xA was one of the first Scion models to enter the market in 2003. Although the car was discontinued in 2006, it provided a good starting point due to its low price. The xA was a subcompact with a standard FF layout, sharing the same 108 hp 1.5L VVT-i engine as both the Scion xB and the now-discontinued Toyota Echo. The car was sold exclusively in California initially as a way to spark demand for the new brand, but by late 2003 it was available nationwide in the U.S.
xD
Introduced at the Chicago Auto Show in 2007, the Scion xD is essentially the replacement for the xA, which was discontinued in 2006. It carries the quirky and customizable spirit of the xA, while improving on key aspects, including a new 1.8L engine that replaces the xA’s 1.5L. It is based on the second generation Toyota ist platform, featuring all-wheel drive, an automatic transmission, and an engine that produces 128 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. It may not seem like much, but the xD boasts excellent fuel economy and can be easily customized with the number of Scion and TRD accessories.
Scion xA
The Toyota ist was rebadged as the xA for sale in the US market, but offered with only the 1.5L 1NZ-FE engine. Customers had the option between a 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmission, and it received a minor facelift in 2006 before importation from Japan ended, marking a change in direction for the Scion brand. 2006

Newly redesigned on the same platform as the first gen ist, it was available with a 4-speed Super ECT trans for the 1.8L 2ZR-FE engine or Super CVT-I for the 1.5L 1NZ-FE engine, which was also available as an allwheel drive option. 2007 Chicago Auto Show – Scion xD
The xD, an evolution of the xA, was a rebadged second-gen Toyota ist. It used a different front fascia than the second-gen ist, but the 1.8L engine was carried over from Japan. Because the 1.5L 1NZ-FE engine wasn't included, North America also didn't receive the all-wheel drive option.
xB
The Scion xB made waves immediately due to its unconventional shape. This is the 5-door hatch which started the trend of cool, boxy urban vehicles. The original xB was essentially a rebadged version of the Japan-only Toyota bB, which was based on the Echo/Yaris platform. The second generation xB, released in 2007, is in Scion’s current lineup. It is less boxy than its predecessor, but still retains many of the design cues the xB is known for. The newer model is also much more powerful, with horsepower and torque figures (158 hp / 162 lb-ft), that are up significantly over the previous model (108 hp / 105 lb-ft.) Although sales have dropped since the introduction of the tC, the xB occupies an important spot within Scion’s lineup.

Toyota bB
Based on the Toyota Vitz/Platz platform, better known as the Yaris and Echo, the bB was available in both 1.3L I4 2NZ-FE and 1.5L 1NZ-FE engines, mated to a 4-speed automatic with available all-wheel drive. 2003

Toyota rebadged the bB as a Scion for sale in the US and switched to bucket seats instead of a bench seat up front. The shifter was also mounted to the floor instead of the column. The 1.5L 1NZ-FE was the only engine available, although the xB was offered with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. 2005
NY Auto Show – t2B Concept
Named after “Tall-two Box,” the t2B was designed by Calty Design Research in California and built by Five Axis. Utilizing a 2.4L I4 engine and 4-speed

automatic transmission, the t2B was offered with upper-level features, including a remotely-powered rear hatch, a tri-level instrument panel with information ticker, dual moonroof and eye-popping suicide doors. 2007 Chicago Auto Show - Scion xB (Second Gen.)
Styled as a 5-door version of the t2B concept, the second-gen xB Concept was less boxy and much larger than the first-gen (2.8-inches wider, 12 inches longer, 4-inch longer wheelbase, 600 lbs. heavier), and included the 2.4L I4 2AZ-FE engine and 5-speed manual and 4-speed sequential transmissions.

tC
Introduced to the Scion family in 2005, the tC (short for 'Touring Coupe'), was the sportiest Scion to date, with a more powerful engine relative to its older siblings. One of the defining features of the tC is its all-glass roof, roomy interior, and unique hatchback design. For those residing north of the border, it was also one of the first Scions to hit Canadian showrooms in March 2011. The tC is currently in its second generation, featuring a new engine (180 hp / 174 lb-ft of torque), carried over from the Toyota Camry. For the 2014 model year, the car receives a mild styling refresh with a new grill, hood, headlamps, wheels and more. Its agile design makes it a highly soughtafter choice for tuners and hardcore track enthusiasts alike.

Evolution of the Scion tC 2004
NAIAS – tC (First Gen.)
Designed as a successor to the Toyota Celica, the initial tC shared the chassis of the Toyota Avensis (UK) and was based on a low-cost platform with many standard features and numerous optional features as a selling point. The 2.4L 2AZ-FE straight-4 engine was available 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual. For the 2008-09 model years, the tC received several upgrades including a revised grill, new headlights and taillights.

NY Auto Show – FUSE Concept
Serving as the basis for the secondgeneration tC, the FUSE Concept wasdeveloped by Toyota's Calty Design Research team in Newport Beach, California and built by Five Axis. Inspiration came from the “HAKO” Super GT race cars of Japan, but included radical design and technology including a wrap around windshield, color-customizable headlights and foglights, and a sensitive steer-by-wire system. The interior featured dual display 10.5-inch monitors in the dash, while on the outside, butterfly doors and slide-out tailgates – which turned into a curb-high bench with fold outspeakers – were unexpected surprises that definitely drew the attention of the crowd.
NY Auto Show – tC (Second Gen.)
Building on the ground breaking FUSEconcept, the second-gen tC shared a similar quarter-panel window lineand was powered by a 2.5L I4 2AR-FE engine. Available with both a 6-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission, the tC was built on the thirdgen Toyota Avensis platform and began sales in 2011 with a more aggressive body kitand was rebadged as a Toyota Zela in Central America, China, Middle East, and South America. 2013

Redesigned for 2014, and using cues from the Scion FR-S, the 2.5L 4-cylinder tC has a new audio system with touchscreen, marking an industry-first asthe only non-luxury brand to feature a touchscreen audio system as standard equipment across its entire lineup. The new 6-speed automatic transmission also featured Dynamic RevTechnology adopted from FR-S for themost sports-inspired Scion tC yet.

iQ
Scion is known for introducing cars to the North American market that really stand out fromthe competition. This statement is especially true when it comes to the iQ. Released in 2011 as a 2012 model, the iQ is focused on being a city car – an ultra-compact design with high fuel efficiency that is perfect for downtown dwellers. According to Scion, the i stands for individuality, innoavation, and intelligence, while the Q stands for quality and the iQ’s cubic shape. The Scion iQ Concept was built by Five Axis, the same outfit that created the Scorpion Pioneer DJ set we spotted at Pioneer’s DJ Art Mix in the last issue of PASMAG. The iQ features unique shapes inside and out, reflected especially in the center console and interior door panels. Although it is a small car, the iQ maximizes its interior space with under-seat storage trays and folding rear seats, a surprising addition for this type of car. It has a 1.3L 4-cylinder engine that produces 94 hp along with a continuously variable transmission, which, with minor upgrades, can make this little sprite more fun than a go-kart.
Evolution of the Scion iQ 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show – Toyota iQ Concept
Designed by Toyota’s European design studio ED2 in France, the iQ was created as an “Intelligent solution to urban transport.” Barely three yards in length, the iQ Concept still had four seats, but in a 3+1 configuration.

Geneva Auto Show – Toyota iQ
Carrying over the iQ Concept's momentum, the Japan-only Toyota iQ (which refers to individuality, innovation, intelligence and quality) came with a super-small 1.0L inline 3-cylinder with 5-speed manual, a 1.3L I4 with 6-speed manual, or a 1.4L diesel I4 with 6-speed manual, all with optional CVT transmissions. The iQ was awarded the Japanese Car of the Year in 2008 and, in a move questioned by many in the automotive world, was also badged as the Aston Martin Cygnet in 2011. The high-priced iQ came with the 1.3L engine and 6-speed manual (or CVT option) to comply with European fleet average emissions standards. 2010

Shown a year before as the Scion iQ Concept with Five Axis custom work, the redbadged Toyota iQ went on sale as a Scion in the U.S. in 2011 and in Canada in 2012. Equipped with a 1.3L 4-cylinder engine with CVT, an all-electric Scion iQ EV (Toyota eQ in Japan) was later launched in 2013.

FR-S
Released in mid-2012 as a 2013 model, the highly anticipated FR-S is Scion’s first true sports coupe. Developed through a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru (the former built the chassis while latter took care of the drivetrain), the goal was to create an authentic and affordable sports car. Needless to say, they succeeded. The car pays homage to Toyota AE86s of years past, which were known for being affordable, perfectly-balanced, rear-wheel drive cars. The flat architecture of the boxer engine allows it to be mounted low in the chassis, giving the car an optimal center of gravity. Coupled with 200 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque out of the box, the FR-S is quite the performer. Low-mounted front seats and a driver-oriented cockpit further increase the feel of the car, putting the FR-S in the sight lines of enthusiasts. With a sharp design and a focus on performance and customization, the FR-S is the epitome of Scion's vision for what a performance car should be.
2009 Tokyo Motor Show Toyota FT-86 Concept
Using design cues from the FT-HS and a 2.0L Toyota-Subaru D-4S boxer engine mated to a 6-speed manual, the FT-86 Concept utilized a modified Subaru Impreza platform. According to chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, its unique Shoujyouhi red color was based on the color of a Japanese monkey's backside!
Evolution of the Scion FR-S 2007 North American International Auto Show - Toyota FT-HS Concept
Named the FT-HS (Future Toyota Hybrid Sport), the front engine, rear-wheel drive, 2+2 sports car was equipped with a 3.5L V6 hybrid engine tuned to deliver approximately 400 hp, with projected 0-60 mph time in the 4-second range. The powerplant used capacitors that discharged electricity for bursts of speed, similar to an F1 KERS system. The FT-HS was designed by Toyota’s Newport Beach, California research and design team (Calty), and the Advanced Product Strategy Group (also based in California). The body was designed to be lightweight and sculpted with “free-form geometrics” for natural aerodynamics.

2011 Geneva Auto Show Toyota FT-86 II Concept
A refined successor to the FT-86, the FT-86 II was designed by the Toyota European Design and Development Centre (ED2). It featured redesigned front and rear bumper, tail lights and head lights, and added a rear spoiler and side vents. It was announced that the production model would be known as the Toyota GT 86, or the Toyota 86 in Japan. 2011
NY Auto Show - FR-S Concept
An even more refined FT-86 II concept was re-badged as a Scion for the North American market and unveiled at the New York Auto Show just months later. Dubbed the FR-S (frontengine, rear-wheel drive sport), the new car went on sale in the second half of 2012. A throwback to longhooded, rear-wheel drive cars of days gone by, the FR-S design was inspired by the lightweight and well-balanced AE86 'Hachi-Roku' Corolla.

This tC has also been converted to right hand drive; a world first. A custom carbon fiber wrapped interior and EAT SLEEP RACE door inserts can all be observed while strapped into the Takata Racing Pro LE race seats with four-point harnesses. A custom radio housing holds the bespoke OEM Audio+ interface in place, which is paired to a Reference 400CF complete audio system and direct-fit subwoofer enclosure. “This tC is a modern day hot rod with clear Japanese roots,” Croll said when asked to describe his Scion. “It has the uniqueness, style and power to win this competition.”

Josh Croll of Croll’s Customs was chosen to represent Pennsylvania. Croll owns his own shop, so all work done to his car was in-house. A cleaner, European-style is apparent in the lines and shape of the exterior. An eye-catching hotrod orange was chosen to grab the attention of showgoers and the judging panel. AeroCatch hood latches and an exhaust vent on the hood, paired with a one-off wide body kit prove that this tC is serious business. Pop the hood and you see the custom three-inch stainless steel hood exit exhaust that leads to the “Ram Horn” turbo manifold. His competition was Seattle’s best and NAMSAYIN transportation lifestyle brand owner, Walter Franco, who teamed up with DTM Autobody to complete his custom tC with VIP style. To start off the luxurious feel, Franco went with classic pearl white paint. Five Axis front spats and side skirts give the car a classy, yet aggressive feel, and an impressive custom chrome wrap gives the VIP vibe Franco wanted. The custom fender flares make room for the drop provided by an Air Zenith air suspension system onto 20x10 and 20x11.5 Avante Garde F410 concave wheels rocking 24-karat gold hardware. Open the doors and you’ll know what it’s like to have keys to the VIP. Torres Upholstery handled the custom leather and Alcantara work without a hitch. Diamond leather seats and floor mats, paired with a wood grain dash and brushed aluminum gauges by Wise Concepts

Hydrographics make this Scion feel more like one of its older, richer Lexus siblings. “We aimed to reach that next level within the VIP style with performance capabilities and a good sense of design cohesiveness,” Franco said. “This build represents the new direction I want to bring to the industry and the skill represented here in the Pacific Northwest.” He wasn’t lying about this tC being capable. The VIP style carries on into the engine bay with a clean PASSWORD: JDM carbon fiber valve cover shroud, polished stainless steel intake system and TRD exhaust – and even more gold hardware. But this tC is also packing some serious heat; a NOS Sneeky Pete 75 shot nitrous system. A Pioneer head unit controls a full HERTZ Energy audio system that’s hushed by Dynamat all around so no matter how loud listen, you’ll still look classy from the outside. The third competitor is Young Tea, who is well known in California as the co-founder of the Scion FR-S community, FRS86. “The tC popularized the concept of a costeffective and easy-to-modify coupe, and that principle inspired this SEMA build,” Tea said regarding the thought process behind his build. “We want to show people what you can build in the garage, and that you can be proud of your car.” Tea and his team aimed to build their “Simpli-tC” concept to earn respect at the track, but also be a daily driver. On the outside, the tC keeps most of the factory design cues while extending the fenders and adding an MV Designz lip kit to announce its presence. Around back, the custom dual-outlet diffuser fits around the titanium-tipped ARK Performance quad exhaust. The “Lite Teal Pearl” by House of Kolor is a unique paint choice and really helps the car stand out. An AirREX air suspension system allows this tC to easily go from ‘low and show’ to ‘track ready and go.’ In order to boost track times, Tea and his team installed a Garrett T3/T04E turbocharger and Dezod Motorsports turbo kit and for show respect, they chose a Downstar Dress Up kit and powder coated engine cover. A Sparco L777 leather steering wheel and Reflex racing pedals gives good track
feel and show appeal while you’re strapped into custom reupholstered racing bucket seats and Sparco four-point harnesses. To really give this tC its own tune, Tea installed a Pioneer audio system to bump at the show or get you in the zone before you hit the track. At the SEMA Show on November 6, 2013, a panel of judges scrutinized the custom tCs and chose the winner of the ninth Scion Tuner Challenge. “Showing off the three Tuner Challenge builds ahead of SEMA lets more Scion enthusiasts see the incredible creativity and craftsmanship that went into these tC vehicles,” said Steve Hatanaka, Scion Marketing and Special Events Manager. “We hope builders will be inspired by the versatility of the tC as displayed by our custom builders. Our panel will have a difficult job choosing the ultimate winner.” After much deliberation, Young Tea and his back-to-basics “Simpli-tC” build were crowned champions of the 2013 Scion Tuner Challenge and he was awarded $10,000 for his efforts. “The design, labor and creativity that went into the Simpli-tC build stood out for our judges and will impress fans at the SEMA show and at home,” said an impressed Hatanaka. “All three builders took the 2014 tC in directions that will help inspire Scion owners to make their vehicles their own. There are no limits."
"It may have been a dash to the finish, but the car looks amazing thanks to the team’s hard work,” Tea said after the win. “With the new styling, the tC was a great platform to take on this challenge, and it inspired our team to bring out a concept we believe in. Stay true to who you are.” Second place went to Walter Franco, with Josh Croll taking third. It was a hard fought competition where each entry produced awardwinning builds. The redesigned tC is an easily-modified platform for shows, tracks, and everything in between. With an exploding parts catalog, the 2014 model is ready to deliver on the Scion vision of clean, fast and mind-bending builds, and the 2013 competition is proof of that.

Once again, Scion brought plenty to the table, showcasing how its latest and greatest car, the FR-S, is capable of being modified in an endless number of ways. These five FR-S builds are perfect examples of how far tuners can go to make the car completely their own. We’ve also thrown in the Strictly Business Scion xB for good measure because, let's face it, it's just another example of Scion greatness.

Steve Aoki needs no introduction in the DJ world – or anywhere else for that matter. Neither does this car, after it nearly stole the show at SEMA. Featuring a fully-functional mixing station, a decked-out Pioneer sound system, American DJ fog machine and strobe lighting, there literally couldn’t be a car more suitable for one of the world's biggest DJs. If that wasn't enough, performance modifications to this mighty FR-S include an MVDesignz five-piece aero kit, TEIN springs, and a GReddy exhaust and intake. This build was designed to show how the FR-S could be modified to suit anyone and, considering Aoki himself helped influence the design process, it's fair to say the build was a complete success.

Bulletproof Automotive is known for providing massive power gains to already-fast cars and its new FR-S Concept One is no exception. The Concept One is its take on transforming an FR-S into a supercar, which means numerous changes had to be made in order to warrant that title. For one, the engine was rebuilt to fit a Powerhouse Amuse turbo kit and Borg Warner turbocharger. As well, the entire body was rebuilt by hand to accommodate a wider stance. Bulletproof didn’t forget about the interior, reupholstering it completely with Alcantara and adding Recaro race seats and carbon fiber trim for good measure. The concept is sitting on 19-inch Volk Racing wheels with Toyo R888 tires, and although the flatfour remains, the advanced turbo system bumps power to 500 hp. Considering the suspension was upgraded to track-spec as well, we can say it definitely deserves the supercar title.

When looking at the Urban GT Sport Coupe, you really get a sense of how dynamic the Scion FR-S chassis is. This car looks like something straight from the future with its concept camera mirrors and custom body panels sprayed in matte grey aluminum paint. But it isn’t all about looks – a TRD cold air intake resides under the hood, along with suspension components from Bilstein. A Digi-Tec ECU and a Remus exhaust ensures a rise in power from the standard 2.0L boxer engine. The body kit is especially stunning. Among its many features are a new grill, bumpers, fenders, and even a headlight conversion. The larger rear diffuser looks especially great against the gray finish. Black HRE Performance wheels finish the look on the outside, while white, diamond-stitched seats give this FR-S a luxurious appearance on the inside.

FR-SScion's 10th CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY AT SEMA The FR-S may have stolen the show at this year's SEMA, but the xB is still a highly coveted Scion in the tuner world. Its boxy shape is a definite departure from the traditional and tempts enthusiasts looking to take their creativity to the next level. Created by Jeremy Lookofsky of Cartel Customs and Dominick Vitelli of Quality Coachworks, this Strictly Business Cartel xB literally shows how far mods to the xB can be stretched. This is more of a limousine than anything else; it includes a Mac Mini computer with onboard Wi-Fi, a large display, reclining rear seats and much more. The interior was inspired by airline travel, with plenty of legroom (perfect for the entrepreneur always on the move) and AccuAir air suspension for amazing ride comfort. A two-tone paint scheme by Abe’s Custom features hand-laid black pin striping, and suicide doors add to a truly unique appearance.

Although this FR-S didn’t receive as much attention at SEMA as the other four, we caught a glimpse of it outside the Las Vegas Convention Center Central Hall and thought it was too good to ignore. This project car comes from Speed Element Performance and features a Rocket Bunny wide-body kit on M Technica Aero two-piece wheels. The stance is perfect, with the wheels sitting just millimeters from the bodywork. The most interesting piece might just be the huge ducktail spoiler integrated into the trunk lid, which, paired with the rear diffuser, changes the appearance of this FR-S drastically from others on display. Finally, the DC Sports exhaust and Perrin Performance intake ensure that it sounds as good as it looks.

Each build is totally unique, almost down to the last bolt and screw. As PASMAG readers, I am sure we all remember her C63 AMG that is now in the 900-hp range and still being driven to this day.

T his how the story begins...
Jonathon has always been a fan of cars, mainly European and high-end exotics. One day while he was bored at home, he began to research various platforms that captured his interest. Then the Scion FR-S popped into his head. It became even more desirable after watching multiple videos of supercharged and nitrous-fed versions on YouTube. Oddly enough, he stumbled on a video of my own car (the StayCrushing FR-S) and fell in love with the lines of a widebody FR-S. He likened it to,“a supercar for a fraction of the price; an import that finally looks like an exotic and can perform like one too.” Jonathon consulted his sister on how they should go
about a build and, literally that very same day, he returned from the dealership with the car. No time was wasted at all. Within a week the car was torn down and the madness began. A top-shelf build like this one this isn’t cheap, but no expense was spared on the Lux Motion wide body, the Satin BASF magenta paint, and a turbo kit dipped in 24-karat gold! If you have to ask how much the dip costs, you probably shouldn’t do it on your car. Nineteen-inch Aristo wheels paired with six and eight-piston CEIKA brakes fill in the extremely wide wheel arches, and Megan Racing coil-overs and suspension arms are

used to dial in the ride height. One of the most shocking aspects of the car is the interior. Custom Dimensions went to work and tore apart the entire inside to create one of the most unique interiors you’ll ever see in an FR-S. Top parts such as CUSCO edition BRIDE seats and Takata race harnesses are used to hold the driver and passenger in place. A Pioneer head unit with dual Alpine subs deliver ear-popping sound, while a 10-farad capacitor bolsters the electronic madness inside this car. There’s even a PS3 in the trunk! One thing to remember about Jamie’s builds is they not only break necks, but they have the power to back them up. Jonathon opted for the Full Blown Motorsports turbo kit and added nitrous on top of that. This setup puts 350 horses at the wheels, which for a car of this size and weight is more than

enough. Bishop Auto handled the assembly and dialed in the finished product. To handle the power, an ACT clutch and flywheel were enlisted after the stock clutch was destroyed due to the power increase. A Quaife LSD has been added to ensure that both rear wheels get equal power at all times. The build made its debut at Spocom and left everyone in shock and awe. The multi-thousand dollar audio/interior setup grabbed most people’s attention initially, but it was the engine bay that caused everyone to lose their mind. Needless to say, the satin assassin absolutely destroyed the competition and won “Best FR-S/BRZ of Show.” The prize and was a giant sword trophy, which is fitting since Jamie is a weapons enthusiast. To date, this joint project between Jamie and Jonathon is one of the most radical FR-S builds ever, sporting a huge amount of power and just about every suspension component around. It seems that every build Jamie touches not only becomes a trophy winner and neck breaker, but a true work of art that can be appreciated by even non-enthusiasts. With more builds on the horizon, we at PASMAG fully expect the Jamie and Jonathon show to entertain us for years to come.

hen the original white paint needed a refresh,, Ma transformed the car with a Bape-inspired d M monochrome camouflage treatment that wass featured eatured in this magazine, as well as several others. The carr was reintroduced to the public with the Gulf colors, a schemee that mixes a retro-inspired livery with the most modern automotive brand of the 21st century. Outside, Ma’s build is simple. A Kenstyle lip kit complimentss the stock body lines, while DAMD Lover Soul fender flares accentuate the stock shape. Stance comes via AirRex air ride suspension to keep the xB low to the ground. Work Equip 01 wheels give the car a timeless look, while Falken Ziex 512 tires grip the road. An adjustable air suspension kit and aggressive - but reasonably-wearing tires – give Ma the look he wants without sacrificing regular road use. Under the hood, the 1.5L 2NZ-FE motor was given a healthy 20% bump in horsepower and torque thanks to the GReddy roots-style supercharger, which was produced for a

short period of time. Airflow is managed by a K&N intake, DC Sports header and DC Sports exhaust, while cooling is handled by a slew of Mishimoto products. All miscellaneous holes in the engine bay were shaved and the entire bay was sprayed battleship gray. The numerous wires were tucked by B3 Tuning for a clean, hot-rod look. Due to the low displacement of the stock motor and relatively low boost, the car still produces good gas mileage but has enough pep to get up to speed when merging on to Southern California freeways. Inside the cabin, the car was given a race theme while still maintaining creature comforts. Sparco Evo 3 race seats are paired with a custom 4-point roll bar from Oink Fabrications to provide safety in the event of any off-road excursions. The NRG steering wheel and quick release short hub replace the bulky stock unit, while DEFI gauges and an ATI e-Pod allow Ma to keep an eye on the engine vitals. A ScanGauge also allows him to monitor gas mileage and error codes. All engine mapping is handled by a GReddy eManage piggyback system mounted in the glove box along with a pair of gauges to monitor the air suspension.
Rounding out the build, Ma teamed up with Jensen Mobile to provide a full array of stereo components. Because he has put well over 100,000 miles on the odometer, he felt it made sense to also upgrade the sound system with this build. With that in mind, Ma installed a system controlled by a Jensen head unit, with 6.5-inch 3-way speakers in the doors and 4-inch speakers in the dash and rear to supplement the sound. All power comes from a Jensen 4-channel amp, and the entire installation was handled by AutoFashion in San Diego, California. The speaker boxes were wrapped in leather, along with the door cards to provide a luxurious feel and appearance. As stunning as the car is, since this feature was shot, Ma sold his xB in an effort to focus on his family and new projects. Considering the car was his most photographed build and the one that has logged the most miles, it was a hard but necessary decision. In fact, since selling the xB in mid-2012, Ma has gone on to build more than 10 magazine and SEMA cars, serving notice that the xB is far from being his final build!

here’s no denying the Supra is the preeminent performance car in Toyota’s lineage, but it is also one of the most heralded cars in the tuner world. When Ryan Tuerck started building his 2013 Formula D competition car, he knew the heart of the Supra would play a major role in his build. Really, it wasn’t a matter of 'if' a 2JZ-powered Scion FR-S would make its debut in Formula D, but when. Tuerck gave the people exactly what they wanted, and now he is kicking butt and taking names in North America's premiere drift series. What started as a bone-stock FR-S has been transformed into one of the most competitive cars on the Formula D grid. Built by the team at Portland Speed Industries, headed by Jason Oefelein in Portland, Oregon, the car was transformed from stock to FD-ready in just two short months. Upon its arrival at PSI, the first thing removed from the car was the FA20 powerplant. Having little time to develop it, a decision was made to swap it with the Supra's standard 2JZ-GTE. While the stock 2JZ block is good for producing big horsepower numbers,

Oefelein and his team went with a 3.4L displacement block to help improve the torque and power range. A Brian Crower stroker crank was paired with Brian Crower 264 cams and a Supertech valvetrain to provide the power at the block. Turbo duties are handled by a Garrett GTX 4294 turbocharger with a pair of 38 mm TiAL wastegates and a 50 mm TiAL blow-off valve for exhaust pulses. Intercooler and exhaust piping was fabricated from Vibrant Performance Piping by PSI. The engine management is handled by an AEM V2 EMS system, powering the motor to more than 800 horsepower and 700 lb-ft. of torque on the PSI dyno. With power comes heat, and dissipating it is a high priority with this build. Complete with a hand-shaped scoop feeding the fins, the Mishimoto radiator was moved into the trunk. Charge air is cooled by an ETS intercooler while an oil cooler helps keeps temperatures down. Looking at the interior, it is clear the car was built with a purpose – any parts that weren't absolutely essential were discarded. An aluminum rear firewall keeps the

place by Takata harnesses when the car slides sideways. A 10-lb. nitrous bottle sits inconspicuously behind the rear seat to feed the Holley NOS wet system, which helps spool the turbos and give the car an added shot when it needs just a bit more. The only other element in the passenger cabin is the FD-spec full roll cage, fabricated completely in-house by PSI. In the first two Formula D events of the season, Tuerck and his Retaks team landed the car in the Top 8, a reward for the hard work by PSI and the Retaks team at the track. While Tuerck has yet to claim his first Formula D championship (he finished 14th in the final standings in 2013, the highest position for an FR-S driver), the car has quickly proven to be competitive and one of the most feared on the track. Tuerck's previous two career FD wins came behind the wheel of a Pontiac Solstice, and he fully intends to capture his next one in this FR-S.

he first thing that meets the eye is the brilliant two-tone finish featuring House of Kolor’s Electric Blue with black accents and hand-laid pinstriping. Among the other striking features, the roof is completely removed, paying homage to generations of chop top lovers with a mix of old school hot rod design and the new micro car trend. The body work doesn’t end there though – the doors are also chopped and capped and the side skirts have been extended and molded together with the front and rear fenders to create a unique, seamless
look. All of the custom exterior panels are made of metal, another nod to hot rodding since most body work done today uses fiberglass or other composites. But it’s on closer inspection of the body work that this car reveals what makes it the ultimate pit support vehicle. At the rear of the car is a Snap-on tool box custom-molded into the rear bumper. And yes, the drawers really do open and there really are tools in there. Better yet, they open via a remote actuator, just in case you aren’t already the coolest person on pit lane. The rear bumper area even houses a Snap-on tools floor jack.

ALL OF THE CUSTOM EXTERIOR PANELS ARE MADE OF METAL, ANOTHER NOD TO HOT RODDING SINCE MOST BODY WORK DONE TODAY USES FIBERGLASS OR OTHER COMPOSITES. The exterior is second to none, but that doesn’t detract from the interior work, which starts with the Alpine speakers and subwoofers that adorn the custom fabricated door and kick panels once you open the doors. The stereo system features two 10-inch Alpine subwoofers, six Alpine component speakers and three Alpine amplifiers. The multitude of speakers sit amongst one of the best looking custom interiors we’ve ever seen. Every inch of the Scion’s interior is covered with black carbon fiber and gray upholstery and even features a custom molded iPad dock which controls the entire vehicle through Red Eye Automation. This car is also a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot utilizing an AutoNet mobile device. Further inspection reveals more tools and pit equipment as well. Molded into the center console, you will find space for a Snap-on wireless impact gun, and in the back is a set of jack stands, two spare tires and wheels. This car truly has everything you need to perform a pit stop in style. Anyone who has ever lifted a full tool box or a floor jack knows these things aren’t lightweight, so to compensate CARTEL had to beef up the suspension. To accommodate, an AccuAir airbag suspension setup was chosen. The airbags can support the extra weight while maintaining a comfortable ride, allowing the car to be slammed to the ground for even more style points. The car was also mini-tubbed in the rear in order to fit the 19x9.5 Lorenzo WL028 wheel and Toyo Proxes 4 tire combo. At the front are a matching set of WL208s in a smaller 18x8 fitment. Finishing off the four corners, Wilwood was tasked with stopping the world’s coolest toolbox with a big brake kit complete with six-piston front calipers, four-piston rear calipers, and gigantic 12-inch rotors. The only part of the car not heavily modified is the engine and drivetrain, which features an upgraded ACT clutch and Torco oils. After all, who needs an upgraded engine when pit lane speed limits are just 10 mph?

FOR THE CANADIAN EDITION OF THE FR-S TUNER CHALLENGE, SCION CHOSE THREE TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE IN A GAUNTLET OF COMPETITIONS TO TEST NOT ONLY THE PLATFORM’S TUNING POTENTIAL, BUT THE SKILL OF EACH TEAM AND THEIR PASSION FOR MOTORSPORT THROUGH 11 ROUNDS OF COMPETITION. EACH TEAM WAS GIVEN A BRAND-NEW FR-S AND $15,000 TO GET THEIR RIDES UP TO SPEC FOR THE CHALLENGES THAT LAY AHEAD.

WHITE NORTH he teams were free to seek sponsorship for parts and work and the stakes were high – the winners were allowed to keep their car, while the two losing teams had to hand over the keys and all of their mods. The cars had to retain the original 2.0L boxer engines, street legal rubber (with a maximum 160 tread wear rating), and most of the Scion branding and styling. The winner of each challenge racked up 10 points for their team, while second and third place earned seven and four points respectively. Scion officials selected the team leaders. Canada’s West Coast is represented by British Columbia’s Team VCMC. Heading it up is Richard Basford, employee of a market research company, 10 year member of VCMC, and driving instructor. Team Top Tuner has built many magazine feature cars, most of which have graced the cover of PASMAG. Edmund Manasan,
a self-proclaimed industry visionary and also involved on the business side of an automotive website, heads the team. Driving for Top Tuner is Sasha Anis, 2012 champion in the Canadian Touring Car Championship. Quebec is represented by Team Swag Racing, led by native Dany Bernier, also known as Babu. He is well known to his fans for his appearances on Quebec TV and radio. He’s been behind the wheel of a Canadian Touring Car Championship race car, dabbled in drifting, and is the former Director of the now-defunct DMCC (Drift Mania Canadian Championship). Round 1: Autocross , was held in August 2012 at Molson Centre in Barrie, Ontario. Basford, very much in his element, came away with a fastest time of 57.90 seconds and 10 points for VCMC. Top Tuner’s Anis drove to a 59.34 and Babu showboated his way into third with a 1:07.20 time.

A week later, the teams met up for the
Round 2: Driving Skills Challenge at St. Eustache Raceway in Quebec. This test required drivers to complete the fastest 10 laps while keeping a ball from bouncing out of a bowl mounted to their hoods. Babu successfully drove without having to go back for another ball or do any re-laps for an easy victory. Top Tuner had less pit stops than VCMC to come away in second place. The results tied all three teams with 14 points each. Round 3: Gymkhana took place at Edmonton's Castrol Raceway in October. Babu set a hard time to beat with a 54.9-second run, but Anis beat it with a nitrous assisted 53.8. Basford closed out the three with a 55.1-second lap. Top Tuner now leads the competition. Returning to Castrol Raceway for Round 4: Drift , it appeared to be a clean win for Babu, but a spin on his final lap put him in last place. Anis secured another win for Top Tuner with some aggressive driving, while Basford settled for the runner-up position. A Canadian challenge can’t be without ice and snow, so Round 5: Ice Racing was on the frozen lake at the Mecaglisse Race Track in Quebec. Studded tires are a must here and some teams switched back to standard suspension setups. Basford’s new turbocharged power backfired on him and resulted in a second-place finish behind Anis, who took his third win in a row for Top Tuner. Babu had a

bit too much fun on the ice and slid into third place. Next was Round 6 and the West Coast’s turn to host a trio of events: Time Attack, Drag Race, and a Show n’ Shine. Mission Raceway in Mission, B.C. was the first stop for Time Attack. VCMC had home field advantage as Basford instructs at the track. Unsurprisingly, he came away with the win, but Anis was just a second shy of Basford’s 1:15.1 run. Later that day, the Round 7: Drag Race took place. The Swag boys from Quebec were simply outgunned, so the final drag showdown was between Top Tuner and VCMC. Basford got lucky as Anis abused his juice a bit too much at a crucial moment, which resulted in a sparkplug malfunction.
The teams then took to waxing and detailing their rides for the Round 8: Show and Shine event at Importfest Vancouver. Even though Swag had a projector running a classic NHL videogame on their door (perhaps the most Canadian thing ever), there was not enough work done to the car itself to bump it up from third place. VCMC let showgoers climb in their spotless car, but were no match for the hard work that went into Top Tuner’s winning FR-S. It was back to Quebec, but this time at Circuit ICAR for the Round 9: The Media Challenge The teams turned their keys over to three automotive journalists who started by lapping a standard FR-S before hopping in the teams’

Round 10: Endurance took place at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario. Time attack, drag race, and drifting all fit into the single event and one challenge's worth of points. Anis kissed the wall in morning practice and bent a lower control arm, but luckily, a local enthusiast offered a replacement part off of his own car so Top Tuner can still compete. VCMC dominated in both the drag and time attack events. Top Tuner had to withdraw their car in time attack due to other issues with the car. In
the drift showdown between VCMC and Swag, Babu came out on top, but Basford and VCMC won the day overall to take home the 10 points. Round 11: People's Choice , also the final competition, was an online popularity contest. This challenge was also worth twice as many points (20 for 1st, 15 for 2nd and 10 for 3rd). In the end, Top Tuner pulled away with 14% more votes than second-place VCMC. After a year and a half and 11 rounds of challenges, the final margin came down to just two points. Top Tuner edged out VCMC and were ecstatic about winning the car. First, they thanked Scion Canada for sponsoring such a unique set of events. Like their counterparts
in the U.S., the folks at Scion Canada are staunch supporters of motorsports and tuning culture. The FR-S offers hardcore track racers and grassroots enthusiasts with an amazing platform to build upon, and this Tuner Challenge was just a perfect example of that.

T
he brainchild of Antonio Alvendia and Kevin Tidewell, the roots of 86FEST date back to the 1990s and the AE86. Back then, while most people in the car scene were attending car shows and import drag racing, Alvendia and his friends were competing in SCCA autocross. He owned a front-wheel drive Toyota, but soon noticed the fastest guys had rear-wheel drives, so he hunted down his first AE86 – a 1985 Corolla GT-S hatch with a factory LSD, and let's just say the rest is history. When the 86 platform was announced, Alvendia (of MotorMavens) and Kevin Tidwell (IWSTI) put their joint passions, vast AE86 knowledge and industry contacts together to brainstorm an event that celebrated those front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars that brought them to where they were in the first place. With some help from Moto Miwa (Club4AG), and his experience in track events and autocross, 86FEST was born. Some people might think 86FEST is just a carryover from the AE86 Festival in Japan, but the show in North America is truly original. Now entering its third year, 86FEST is anticipating its biggest event yet, which is hard to imagine considering the previous turnouts.

While a number of spectators gathered trackside to watch their friends participate in the 86FEST autocross experience, most attendees were in the vendor village busy shopping for parts and participating in the 86FEST Parts Raffle. For two years running, the 86FEST Raffle has remained the most popular element of the show, providing attendees with the chance to take home over $15,000 in performance parts and accessories from top name brands like Hawk Performance, HRE Wheels, Innovate Motorsports, Vortech Superchargers, GReddy and Jackson Racing, to name a few. Daryl Sampson, Marketing Manager at Turn 14 Distribution, one of the nation’s largest performance parts wholesale distributors, recognized how 86FEST offers a unique, large-scale event that gives brands the opportunity to connect to enthusiasts, taking a great deal of interest in 86FEST and the popularity of the 86 platform. “We were really excited to brand our company within the 86 community and show support for our vendors – speed shops all over the nation who sell parts for these cars,” Sampson said. “The show is fantastic, it’s a really great crowd. the autocross, while others purchased new upgrades at special, show-only prices. Attendees shot tons of photos and videos, uploading thousands of them to their social circles and engaging in the social contests offered by many of the official sponsors. If you don't already know how popular the 86/ FR-S platform is from the number of magazine covers it has appeared on over the last year, the sheer number of parts and accessories available from every major aftermarket manufacturer are a great indication, especially given the car is just a little more than a year old. Alvendia and Tidwell knew when Toyota and Subaru introduced the 86 platform that 86FEST would be popular, but they had no idea it would become this popular this soon. “Compared to its inaugural year, 86FEST has grown a lot,” Alvendia said. “This time around, we were able to spread the event out a little more, so people weren’t as closely packed in, and that has worked well. We wanted to spread the cars around so the car owners could easily interact with all the vendor that set up booths. I have been to automotive events all over the world, and our event has more [FR-Ss and BRZs] than I have ever seen in one spot.”

Despite the distance, cars came from all over the United States, including race cars, track cars, show cars, enthusiast cars and every SEMA FR-S/BRZ. Beyond the cars, vendors and models, there were also racing stars. Formula Drift pro driver Ken Gushi – the poster boy for Scion’s FR-S print and TV campaigns – was in attendance for the second year in a row. “Last year we really didn’t know what to expect and, in the end, the result was really overwhelming and we decided to plan a greater presence this year,” he said. “The crowds were great and we saw the overall support of the community for the FR-S/BRZ twins. So we knew that coming back to 86Fest this year would be that much bigger.”
Gushi’s team, GReddy Performance, had a great display as they brought out his race car and personal street car. After the success of 86Fest II, it is clear this can't just be called a car meet. It is something that even general enthusiasts are circling on their calendars. The quality of onand off-track competitions, the showcases and events throughout the weekend reveal a level of preparedness and execution from lessons learned. Thankful for the fan support and amazing atmosphere, Alvendia said, “We look forward to growing this event and thank everyone for their suggestions, feedback, and participation in making 86Fest a success this year and for years to come!”
