THE ULTIMATE SEMA ISSUE
W
e're back from yet another exciting and exhausting SEMA show, and boy do we have a bunch of cool stuff to show you. The show gave us our annual fill of inspiration and admiration, and we can't wait to pass some of it along to our readers in this issue. Before we dive into the big show, we have a handful of other events to show you from the past few months, like StanceWars: Houston and the first ever Hot Import Nights show to hit Australia. In our usual fashion, we've also got two previous TBGLIVE winners to showcase, as well as a catalogue of some of the industry's latest and greatest products for all walks of enthusiast life. From there it's head-first into SEMA 2017, starting with our coverage of the show. We broke it down into various sections of the show floor so you can tackle it one section at a time. We imagine it hurts your feet a lot less to roam the show from a comfortable chair rather than walking the halls for days. We'll also take a look at all the excitement from the fifth Tuner Battlegrounds Championship, which surprised even us in terms of its overall reach and engagement during the show. The people have spoken, and the champion has been crowned. Finally, we'll round off the SEMA content with our team's favorite cars, as well as our top 10 picks for the Global Media Awards for new products. After SEMA, it's on to some cool tech, reviewed by our favorite audiophile, Garry Springgay, before we get into our feature vehicles. We know some of you are reading this for that Datsun 240Z on the cover, so brace yourself for some incredible build secrets in that CONNECT masterpiece. The 240Z isn't the only Z car in this issue, either. Jason Gale's 370Z is a work of art we've been eyeing since SEMA 2016, and we finally got it to grace PASMAG.COM our pages. In addition to the two beautiful Zs, we get up close and personal with last year's Tuner Battlegrounds TUNERBATTLEGROUNDS.COM Championship runner-up, Eric Guerette and his incredible hand-built Subaru WRX. PASMAG Lastly, we take a look back on an entire editorial year with our annual Tuning 365, a month-by-month look at PASMAG the last 365 days that we've miraculously managed to squeeze into this book. PASMAG As always, thanks for picking up PASMAG, and we hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putPASMAG.TUMBLR.COM ting it together. Thanks for another amazing year!

DECEMBER HOT IMPORT NIGHTS: AUSTRALIA 10 SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA 2017 Story by Dennis Shen | Photography by Devious Design Photography HotImportNights.com.au
@hotimportnights.au
Hot Import Nights presented by the Colab team hosted the very first HIN in Australia at Olympic Park. It was an action packed Sunday which featured 200 of Australia’s best modified cars, motorcycles, and pedal push bikes. There were various awards ranging from the hottest wheels, hottest engines, in car entertainment, and hottest car, but it was PASMAG’s Tuner Battlegrounds contest that turned heads. Once competitors got the hang of it they hit full force, and Clayton Pallster with his 2006 Subaru Forester was the clear winner of the Tuner battlegrounds trophy.
hotimportnightsau
HIN Australia was also the first of its kind to showcase the lifestyle elements with gourmet food trucks, the first ever Dance Delight contest held outside of Japan, B boy battle ground, a sneaker and streetwear swap meet, remote control racing plus gaming, and virtual reality. There was definitely something for everyone at the Sydney show, and the model lounge was one of the busiest areas fans congregated, thanks to the American Import models such as Vicki Li, Emily Lee, Ashley Vee, Courtney Riggs, Erica Nagashima, and Danielle Lombard. No model lounge is complete without the appearance of Miss HIN
contestants who also were signing and selling their merchandise to all their fans. Celebrity Timothy Delaghetto from MTV’s Wild ‘N Out was flown in to co host with HIN hostess with the mostess, Gwendolynne Gee. Together, they crowned the winner of Miss HIN Australia Melissa Grace, who went on to represent Australia at HIN Hawaii. It was an exciting first event with cars, girls, celebrities, gaming, and dance comps. We can’t wait to see what the team brings out next year and who will win the next Tuner Battlegrounds trophy!

NOVEMBER STANCEWARS: HOUSTON 18 THE LONE STAR CONVENTION & EXPO CENTER, HOUSTON, TX 2017 Story by Mike Tolliver | Photography by David Barnhouse StanceWars.com
@Stancewars
After the ravaging hurricanes, no one was sure if there would be any shows come late fall in Texas. Several of the events were canceled or put on hold until they could see what was going to happen. StanceWars was considering doing the same, but luckily, with the

StanceWars
change in venue from Minute Maid Field to Lone Star Expo and Convention Center, the event ended up just outside the city and outside a lot of the destruction. With new changes comes new expectations and StanceWars aimed to meet those, with the
new venue providing ample space, lush green grass, and more flexibility with hotels for guests coming to experience the weekend. As you pull up to any StanceWars experience, you always hear the music popping, see lines of people, and some of the hottest cars out there. This year, with the added space, the #Top100 role was quite simple, as they were able to stage all the cars in front of the main stage. The new venue also allowed a lot more VIP parking inside the gate. As usual, the fit and finish on everything from BMWs from VWs were stacked in sweet rows of fitment goodness. Surrounding that was a nice layout of vendors and sponsors, like Toyo Tires, Monster Energy, Funk Fashion, and Slammedenuff, as well as local Texas sticker shops and tire shops. StanceWars always provides a good experience, as it’s not just a car show to them; it’s about getting the car family together and having

EVENT SPOTTER'S GUIDE a good time. Throughout the day, prizes were being given away given off the main stage, especially as the crowd gathered for the air ride\static limbo. As day became night, the awards were ready to be given out and the crowd gathered once more to see what the fitment gods had decided. As the crowds dispersed about an hour later, StanceWars started up the VIP party with drinks flowing at Pappasito’s Cantina, where sponsors, vendors, car owners, staffers,
and lucky ticket holders enjoyed stiff drinks and appetizers into the evening. In 2018, StanceWars will be doing two- and three-day events across the nation. This new venue in Conroe, Texas, will be able to provide a solid three-day show from November 16th to 18th next year. While StanceWars will still be Saturday night, Sunday will be a European car show called “Sophisticated Euro” and an all old-school import event called “The Old School Reunion.” With all sorts of fun planned for next year’s StanceWars, it’s sure to be a three-day festival for the petrol head in all of us.

know how that goes. Inspired by the local car scene, as well as a close family friend who has always been into building cars, the desire to modify the Audi took hold. In addition to most modifications costing a lot of money, Da Cruz says that one major difficulty when building was a lack of variety in the aftermarket for the S5, but he still managed to pull together enough mods to build a show-worthy car. “My
favorite part of the build is the Liberty Walk widebody,” he tells us, referencing the car’s most stand-out feature other than its bright blue wrap. Watercooled Industries MD1 wheels complete the look at ground level, and they’re tucked under the fenders thanks to a full Air Lift air suspension system. In addition to a standard air tank, Da Cruz took a page out of the books of old low riders. The roll cage has a sectioned-off part which is used
as another air tank, pressurized by a compressor the same way. Da Cruz believes in dong things once, and doing them right, so he is very careful about what parts he chooses to include in the build. He mentioned Air Lift and Liberty Walk as reputable brands with quality products he can trust on his car. Believe it or not, the Audi S5 you see here is his first true build, and he tells us he’s not done with it yet. We can’t wait to see what comes next.

t one time, Clint Yesui owned a 2000 Toyota Celica GT-S, which he turned into a full blown show car, complete with an Xbox, a Playstation, and even a coffee maker. Owning that Celica made Yesui fall in love with the Yamaha 2ZZ-GE engine, and his research taught him that the Lotus Elise featured the same power plant. After reading more, he began falling in love with Lotus and their philosophy of performance through lightness. He had to have one of his own. It wasn’t long before he went and picked up a 2005 Lotus Elise, a car which he says is an extension of himself, perfectly reflecting his own personality. Inspired by the possibilities of modification, the build was on as soon as the car made it home, and Yesui had some ambitious plans. “One of the major challenges I experienced in the build was custom fitting and forming the carbon fiber bits to meet

my perfectionist expectations to fit as OEM in the interior,” he says, referring to the incredible amount of carbon fiber replacement parts inside the cockpit. Countless hours were spent trimming and fitting carbon fiber bits inside and out. The carbon fiber seats inside are one of a kind, designed and made in Italy by Eltech Italia, and a sponsorship from Greg’s Race Parts was key in acquiring quality Lotus aftermarket parts that included more carbon fiber for the exterior. While the Lotus was already quick, some people need a little bit more, and Yesui is one of those people. An Eaton MP62 super-

ADAM GORDON (AG): 2017 was my second year attending SEMA. The sensory overload of the first year was a little bit more manageable, but it didn’t stop me from completely running myself dry over the course of our five days there. Having an idea of some of the builds I was there to see did wonders in helping me plan my days of exploring the SEMA grounds, but I made a conscious effort to avoid some spoilers before arrival. As always, SEMA delivered plenty of surprises.

MICKY SLINGER (MS): SEMA number four for me is in the bag and one thing remains the same about the “big show;” it never gets smaller. Each year, a new area or hall is opened and filled with new product and vehicles, making SEMA even more massive. Being able to photograph early in the morning and staying after the crowds had left gave us some great visuals and gave us a feeling that we really had seen everything (unless, you know, there was some new hall opened up somewhere). SEMA is a beast, and I feel like we slayed it this year! AG: For many of us, the Blue Lot is where it all begins. As a popular load-in spot for exhibitors before the show officially kicks off, this is where we get our first glimpses of the overflow of SEMA vehicles that aren’t showcased in a particular booth. In a way, it resembles a parking lot car meet, something we’re all familiar with. Scattered around the Blue Lot is an eclectic mix of big trucks, widebody imports, and some real gems like the slammed

BLUE LOT rat rod towing a trailer on a custom hitch located inside its rear section. MS: Usually, I hit the Blue Lot pretty early, but this year, due to a lot of meetings as such, I wasn’t able to properly see until the last day! I’m glad
I made it out though. Some highlights include a Supreme-branded Audi, a stellar Pandem R32 GT-R from Vancouver, and Zwing’s drift Bimmer. Blue Lot houses such a cool mix of stuff. Lighter, daily driven builds, heavy hitters, ridiculous trucks – it’s all here.

silver LOT AG: I’ve always referred to the Silver Lot as the SEMA circus. For many attendees and exhibitors, the expansive Silver Lot, divided into three sections, is where most of the tire-spinning, rubber burning action of the show takes place. While Shell and Velocity Channel make up the two stages by the lobby entrance, Ford takes the “biggest display” award with the massive Ford Out Front clearing, complete with a walled-off section for drift demos and truck stunts on the ramp in the middle. Throughout the rest of the Silver Lot area, some of the show’s most impressive cars and trucks are scattered on all sides. Drawing a crowd near the front of the lot was the Baller Hauler, a constant attraction throughout the show.
MS: Silver Lot is the constant producer of loud noises and tire smoke outside of the main entrance. And while Ford Out Front’s noise-making drift circle can easily capture attention, it’s the cars out front of doors to the main lobby (increased security included) that make my jaw drop. Stan Chen’s impossibly clean “Crazy88” E30 M3, a potent Evo by Sheepey Built, and even a laid out, VIP-style Rolls Royce, completely trimmed out with Junction Produce goodies are just some of the fantastic builds parked up. I believe SEMA even opens this area up to the public on a certain day, and I think this strip is absolutely indicative of the level of builds you see indoors.

WHEEL & TIRE HALL AG: Whether show-worthy stance or track-ready performance is your game, the wheel & tire hall had something for everyone. There were many new exhibitors here this year – some names we recognized, and some that were completely new on the scene. As was expected, many companies used exotics and supercars to show off their latest wheel offerings, which gave us a closer look at some of the cars we usually only see on posters. Supercars aside, the hall was also home to some of SEMA’s coolest builds, including the Datsun 2+2 280Z built by Big Mike and Gas Monkey Garage at the Nitto Tire booth.
MS: Honestly, the Wheel and Tire Hall is the hall that I dread the most going in. There are always oceans of people ebbing and flowing through the doors, making it pretty crazy to try to get in and out of the hall. Once you’re in though, you’re treated to one of the most exciting halls of the show. Booth displays are huge and it’s all about the flash. If you’re looking for exotic cars and massive trucks, this is the place for you. I also got the chance to stop by the Konig booth and have a chat with Rob Parsons, aka Chairslayer, to speak about his plans for 2018 and his new charity which will gift a full drift car to a paraplegic driver! While I had my grievances about going into the hall, I had some great experiences.
TOYO TREADPASS AG: The Toyo Treadpass has become my absolute favorite part of SEMA every year. Tucked between the main hall and south hall, the treadpass is where team Toyo exhibits some of the coolest builds rocking their rubber. They certainly don’t skimp on quality here - most of my favorite cars from the show were found here. The exhibit does a great job of blending old school and new wave. Representing yesteryear’s greatest hits are Datsuns brought to jaw-dropping standards like Dominic’s 240Z and Daniel Wu’s 510, as well as a pair of Porsches that closer resembles fine art than anything else. Innovation isn’t left out here, either. A Rocket Bunny Lexus showcases Work Wheels’ newest, the CR3P.
28
MS: It kills me to think that some people might not see the Toyo Treadpass. It’s easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for, since it’s a small strip that joins two buildings. This strip is home to the most concentrated collection of meticulously-built vehicles at SEMA, and is a must-see for us every year. For example, smack dab in the middle of the display was Willy Izaguirre’s BMW E9 CSL build, which he built himself, straight from a Jonsibal rendering. And right beside that was Bulletproof Automotive’s 700-horsepower Evo X, wearing Varis’ newest widebody kit and the very first set of universal center-lock wheels from Hyperlock. Toyo Treadpass is just full of magazine front covers.

MCLEOD NASCAR EXPERIENCE AG: If you ain’t first, you’re last. This annual excursion thanks to our good friends at McLeod Racing is a highlight every year, but this year was extra special. Instead of just myself representing the PASMAG team at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Micky and our Tuner Battlegrounds competitors were also invited, so the competition was on! Changing things up from years previous, we no longer had an instructor sitting shotgun. This time we were strapped in by ourselves, only communicating with an instructor via the headset in our helmets. Micky may have beaten my top speed (by a pretty good margin), but driving real NASCAR racecars under the stadium lights at night is an unforgettable experience nonetheless. MS: GO FAST, TURN LEFT. SHAKE AND BAKE, BABY! I feel like I’m still riding the adrenaline from driving a NASCAR at night at a lit track. Last year, somehow, Adam was the only one available to make it out to the track with the good folks of McLeod Racing to go through the Richard Petty Driving Experience, and I was spectacularly salty that I couldn’t go. I had to get back at him by crushing his time in my first time driving a NASCAR ever (sorry not sorry, Adam). I’ve never driven anything that even compares to a NASCAR and I have a whole new appreciation for what the guys and girls of the sport do. While I may be happy with my top speed around the track, Jesus Sanchez’s (Tuner Battlegrounds runner-up) wife had us all beat with a score over 150 mph.
SEMA IGNITED AG: After the announcement that SEMA 2017 had come to a close, we loaded up our gear into the van, and made our way through the post-SEMA traffic towards the hotel before our flight home. In what has become an annual SEMA tradition, I jumped out of the van in traffic to get myself over to SEMA Ignited. Out here, that familiar sensory overload from the first time comes rushing back, as a parade of SEMA vehicles makes its way out of the LVCC and into the Gold Lot for the closing show. Greeted by
30
many familiar faces from earlier in the week, SEMA Ignited is a car meet that serves as a meeting point for everyone’s final goodbyes before we all take off to our respective corners of the world. By this point, my feet had lost all feeling, and my flight was leaving in a few hours, so I said my farewells and headed home. Until next year, SEMA! MS: SEMA Ignited, for me, is when a voice comes over the PA system and says, “The 2017 SEMA Show
is now over,” and before she can even finish, all the engines in each hall start simultaneously. It’s a deafening roar that’s followed by the smell of fuel, and I absolutely love it. Adam’s annual jumping out of the van to run into SEMA Ignited is followed by me going back to the hotel room and collapsing into bed for a nap before packing up for our red eye home. Adam tells me Ignited is a good time. I believe him.

RECAP OF THE COMPETITION AT THE BIG SHOW Story by
Micky Slinger //

Slinger & Taylor Vollrath
Five years of Tuner Battlegrounds. That’s such a mind-blowing sentence to be able to say. Five whole years of enthusiasts showcasing their builds through our competition for the chance to be on the cover of PASMAG and experience having their car at the SEMA show. Every year, the competition grows, setting new records in numbers of participants, as well as voters.
O
ne thing that remains the same, year after year, are the competitors and their nature. While things do get super competitive and tense at times, both parties always hold it together and handle victory or defeat with humility you wouldn’t necessarily expect in this day and age. These guys are people we’re happy to have out, representing PASMAG at SEMA. Jesus Reyes and Jesus Sanchez were no exception. Besides the wild similarity of first names, the Jesuses both own fantastic Hondas – Reyes has a widebody and supercharged S2000, while Sanchez runs a fitted and impeccably clean TSX. Both

named Jesus, both drive Hondas, and an S2000 and TSX have both won the TBG Championship in the last two years. Tuner Battlegrounds 2017: the year of coincidences! The coincidences stop there, however. This year, we changed up the onsite voting to include both business card ballots and badge scans to bolster the online options of voting: Instagram and Twitter hashtag voting, as well as one-click voting via TunerBattlegrounds.com. After the winner was crowned, we saw some truly staggering figures, especially in total hashtag impressions, which added up to 5,970,512 (almost six million!), and total hashtag reach, which found its way to 3,151,123 people!

Speaking of the winner, the victor of the 2017 Tuner Battlegrounds Championship is Jesus Reyes and his Honda S2000! Amassing 4,099 total votes (562 votes over Sanchez), Reyes comes home with a future PASMAG cover feature, a beautiful trophy made by Nostalgic Grains, a set of wheels from Rotiform, and a full air suspension kit from Air Lift Performance – not to mention the incredible experience of experiencing the SEMA show. Even in defeat, Sanchez was a real class act, offering an embrace to Reyes and letting him know that he deserved the win. That’s how you like to see a competition come to a close. It’s been crazy to see Tuner Battlegrounds go from an idea that was born in a boardroom at the PASMAG offices, to the social media monster it is today. The amount of people that approached us at SEMA alone to let us know they were building their cars up for the 2018 competition was staggering, so you can bet we’ll be working to make next year’s competition even more explosive and exciting. Thank you for all your support this year – we can’t wait to see you and your builds in 2018!

Kelly-Moss Road and Race VICCI Safari 4
In case you didn’t know, Kelly Moss makes some of the most amazing Porsches on the planet, mainly for their GT3 Cup racing program. This time around, they tackled the 964 platform to produce the VICCI Safari 4, and parked it right across from the PASMAG booth for me to stare at. The Safari 4 is all-wheel-drive and features a supercharged 3.8-liter flat-six that’s tuned to push out 435 horsepower. In true rally fashion, the Porsche is equipped with plenty of large, front-facing lights, heightened suspension travel, all-terrain tires, and a large handbrake lever ready to brake the rears loose. This car is built to be a fun-haver, and winning the “Best Off-Road Vehicle” award at SEMA, it seems that I’m not the only one who loves this thing.

Gunther Werks’ 400R This was the first car of SEMA to get me to stop in my tracks, and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. On the pre-show media day, we stumbled upon this shining red example of Gunther Werks’ 400R in the Meguiar’s booth. This was #00 of a total of 25 made, and on the last day of the show, 21 had been spoken for, with over 60 more requests still to be processed. This project is Gunther Werks’ reimagining of the most potent version of the Porsche 993 and requires a 993 Carrera 2 donor car from the ordering customer before anything gets started. A fully carbon fiber body, modernized interior, and a built engine from Rothsport Racing that’s good for over 400 horsepower round out this beautiful creation.
Hert’s “Twerkstallion” Mazda RX-7 The Twerkstallion is a car that I’m all too familiar with, but not in the form that showed up to the SEMA show. If anyone is familiar with Hert’s drift car shenanigans, you’ll know that his FC RX-7 was the definition of “missile.” Dented and shredded body panels and aero, a junkyard V8, and the reliability of a rollercoaster made out of popsicle sticks used to be the highlights of this build, but the new RX-7 is absolutely jaw-dropping. The BN Sports kit all around has been coated in some fresh red paint and a kickass, chromed-out livery from Factory83. In the engine bay, where the old Chevy LS heart used to sit, is a return to form: a rotary engine that’s been overhauled by Angel Motorsports. Seeing this car was like seeing Goku fighting Frieza and turning Super Saiyan for the first time.
Willy Izaguirre’s BMW E9 3.0 CSL
4
After seeing Jon Sibal’s rendering of the car, Willy asked him straight up if he could build a car based off his imagining. The artist granted him permission and wished him good luck in scratch building something with such extreme dimensions. Imagine his shock when he saw it at SEMA in the Toyo Treadpass for the first time! Starting with a rusted-out ’73 3.0 CS coupe, Willy reproduced the wide fenders and spoilers from the original “Batmobile” racecar in fiberglass. BBS wheels measuring 17x9.5 in front and 17x15.5 in the rear fill out the added width of the car, and a turbo’d S52 engine and 6-speed trans out of an E36 M3 give it racecar power and feel. There’s still more to come for the car as well, so keep an eye on @old_dtm on Instagram!
JJ Dubec’s Liberty Walk Acura NSX JJ Dubec may make purists pretty mad with his creations, but we can’t help that each one looks, sounds, and performs fantastically. After an R35 GT-R and a Ferrari 458 aired out and dressed in Liberty Walk, he set his sights on the brand-new NSX. With the GT-R and Ferrari having some platform development, he was able to pick and choose parts for those, but the NSX was fresh out of the box, so it took a little more creativity. Working with some great partners, JJ was able to piece together a full air suspension and exhaust system, plus a set of custom wheels to go along with his freshly kitted and painted NSX. This car was a show stopper on the floor for sure.

Dominic Le’s SR20-Powered Datsun 240Z
1
Anyone who knows me knows I’m a sucker for a Datsun 240Z, so thanks to my personal bias, this Datsun takes the #1 spot for me. As one of my dream cars, the 240Z has a special place in my heart, and Dominic Le’s take on the platform is one of my all-time favorites. Combining two of my favorite things, Le was one of two SEMA exhibitors to stick an SR20DET into a Datsun Z. What makes Le’s project all the more impressive to me is that most work was done in the garage. The custom drive-by-wire SR20 is surrounded by titanium bits – even the bolts holding everything together are titanium, which makes the details a pleasure to pour over. The suspension is made up of billet components, and the interior is full of homemade carbon fiber parts. Perhaps one of the car’s coolest details is the red reflective carbon fiber front bumper and splitter, which Le also made himself at home. All that time running Chasing Js has certainly paid off in skillsets. Adding the perfect finishing touch to blend old school cool with new age design is a set of Work Equip 40s in a gold finish that works well with the Datsun’s red exterior. Hell yeah, Dominic.
Slang500’s Twin Porsches
As much as I loved Mascunana’s Cayman, there’s something to be said for stock-bodied Porsches that have been crafted so finely that they don’t need big wings or exposed rivets to stand out, even among the cream of the crop at SEMA. Slang500’s matching Porsches are exactly that. With impeccable craftsmanship inside and out, including multiple custom engraved components in and out of the engine bay, Slang500’s steampunk-inspired Porsche 912 and Porsche 356 are the closest things to fine art I have seen in the car world in a long time. The matching 52 Outlaw wheels from Fifteen52 are the perfect finishing touches to bring these incredible builds together.

Dionne Mascunana’s Cayman Part of the reason I like Dione Mascunana’s Cayman so much is the fact that I wasn’t a huge fan of its first iteration. Some of you may remember a gray Pandem Cayman from SEMA 2016, one of the world’s first applications of the kit. While the kit was impressive, and a Porsche Cayman is always cool, it just didn’t quite do it for me. This year, however, Mascunana has turned the Pandem Cayman up to 11. With a bunch of custom aero pieces that he made himself, Spyder lighting accenting the exterior, Tarett suspension throughout, and plans to install a custom twin turbo setup after SEMA, this fighter jet Cayman became an instant favorite for me.
Fortune Auto S15
4
I’ve always had a thing for period correct JDM sports cars, especially those of the late 1990s and early 2000s variety, so it should surprise nobody that the S15 seen at the Fortune Auto booth is on my Top 5 list. The Vertex body kit, the Volk CE28SL wheels, the yellow Recaro seats and the absolutely stunning deep purple paint are just the beginning. Pop the hood, and you’re met with a beautifully-equipped RB26, complete with super rare ARC goodies, carbon fiber, and some of the most beautiful fabrication work on the show floor. Making it even better, the trunk features a full Sony audio system, installed beautifully in a way that keeps the trunk useable for everyday life. This is a perfect street car!
3 The Baller Hauler Where do I even start with the Baller Hauler and its AE86 cargo? Do I even need to explain? Just look at this duo! I’ve been stoked about this project since we saw the first pieces of custom work being done when it went viral online. When our friend Phil Blottie told us that Miles Shinneman was bringing the finished product to SEMA, I made it my personal mission to find this thing and pour over every detail. With a drift-ready AE86 on mismatched (yet still matching) wheels atop the 1993 Isuzu NPR hauler, this rig and its cargo were an absolute show-stopping duo at the show.

The dash cam market has exploded with options in recent years, with a plethora of options as to what kinds of technology you can have guarding your car and documenting your trips. I think Waylens may have just risen above the crowd with their Secure360 camera system. First things first, the Secure360 is a 360-degree camera that monitors your car while it’s driving and parked. While parked, the camera’s radar and accelerometer can detect events, which it then automatically backs up to the cloud via 4G-LTE bandwidth. You can also view these events live, streamed from the camera. There’s also built-in GPS to help find your car, and a 360-hour battery pack to keep an eye out for extended periods of parking. It’s got just about everything!
Yes, this system was developed for competitive karting, but let’s look at the technology here. The center of the Vantage CL1 data kit is Racepak’s D3 app. D3 provides complete instrumentation to your phone or tablet, while wirelessly gathering sensor data from the CL1 data box and uploading that data to the Racepak cloud. This data can be displayed through over 1,500 preloaded TouchMap 3D track maps that show where gains can be made – all from your smartphone or tablet. Incredible, right? I’m sure that the next step is to bring this accessible system to a track car soon, in what is surely the only good excuse to use your phone while driving.
0.66 Wheel $368/wheel | 3SDM-wheels.com While a large trend in the wheel industry right now is to reimagine certain wheel designs from “back in the day,” something that’s not often done is reimaging an era, especially an era of motorsport. This is something that 3SDM’s 0.66 wheel achieves. Just one look at the inset letters around the face of the wheel, long spokes, integrated concave fan, and the flat lip – all packed into a cast design – is totally reminiscent of turbofan rally wheels from the ‘80s. With the design coming from a European brand for Euro cars, that makes it even more legit. I can’t wait to see how owners will interpret the lines of the wheel and bring their own twists to it.

EVO Series Electronic Boost Controller $189 | ProsportGauges.com Prosport describes their new electronic boost controller as a “must have” if you’re running a turbocharged or supercharged car, and I totally agree. With just about every car coming out these days with some kind of boost, an electronic, customizable boost controller is a great idea to have, especially if you plan to modify further. The EVO Series Electronic Boost Controller is dimmable, comes in red or blue, can be programmed with warnings, and has two user-selectable boost settings, allowing you to monitor and control your boost on demand. Even better, the kit is plug and play with a wiring harness, a waterproof sender, mounting cup and visor, hoses and fittings, and even free tech support for life. Boost ‘til you die.

3.0 TFSI Ultracharger System $1,599.99 | GoAPR.com Did you know that the intake tract to the supercharger on 3.0 TFSI VAG engines is robbing you of horsepower? Generally, I’m of the idea that German OEMs are as efficient as possible, but while APR was poking around for R&D, they found that the cross-sectional area of the stock throttle body is about 25-percent smaller in cross-sectional area than the supercharger inlet, which causes some choking at higher speeds. APR’s new throttle body is 5-percent larger area than the SC inlet for unrestricted airflow. Paired with an included ECU upgrade, this system should provide a bump in power (APR claims up to 33 horsepower!) and looks to your engine bay.

Sparta Evolution
Thermal R&D

$1,299.78 | ThermalRD.com
Every year that I do product judging, there’s always something that jumps out at me from the showcase, and Sparta Evolution’s Triton R brake caliper was that one for me this year. Finished in shining, machined, and forged aluminum with red lettering painted in, it attracted me from across the room, and as I got closer, I noticed the gorgeous copper hardlines and through-bolt design. It’s a serious piece of equipment. The Triton R is designed with weight savings, heat dissipation, and ease of use in mind to get the best results under pressure. Available in four- or six-piston opposed variants, the R is 15-percent lighter and packs more ventilation than the standard Triton caliper, and is built to accept FMSI pad shapes for more choice. I’m expecting to see more and more at shows and on the track.
I was lucky enough to track the Civic Type R at Circuit Mont Tremblant in Quebec, Canada this year. I absolutely loved it. One thing that was hyped about the car was the exhaust system and how Honda had figured out how to eliminate drone and deliver an aggressive tone, but when we hit the track, I felt that the sound level wasn’t anywhere near what I expected. Right away, I wanted to see what the aftermarket had available, and a few months later, I was introduced to Thermal R&D’s offering at SEMA. Thermal retains the three-tip design, while widening the piping to three-inches and adding a Hemholtz resonator to reduce drone. The Thermal also has the most unique tip of other offerings out there and delivers a higher-pitched, more exotic note.

“Wow, this guy must have really liked the Type R.” Yes, I did. And I feel like a little more of a drop (maybe some smaller wheels) paired with a nice exhaust would make the car perfect. Eibach just so happened to offer a perfect little package with their PRO-PLUS system. The system is made up of a full set of lowering springs that brings the CTR down 0.8 inch and a set of sway bars that are adjustable to driver preference. The combination can tailor a car that’s bred for spirited driving to your taste, as well as reduce stopping distance and increase steering response. There, now the Type R is perfect.
Mazda MX-5 E Force Supercharger
$4,995.95 | Edelbrock.com Another car that I really enjoy is Mazda’s newest MX-5. I had a blast ripping through the canyons in California, and believed that the car didn’t need more power to be fun. I thought the same thing before I supercharged my personal FR-S. Edelbrock’s E Force supercharger mounts up nicely to the side of the Mazda SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine and fits under the hood without any issue. Built around the fantastic Eaton R900 TVS rotor assembly, the E Force supercharger brings an increase to the MX-5 of 50-percent with the full kit, which includes all installation hardware, added cooling, and an EcuTek tuning kit. It’s also completely bolt-on, so no worries about cutting or welding.
Heritage 6 Wheel $495/wheel | MOMO.com Can I just say that I’m so happy to see MOMO putting out really cool stuff again? Welcome back, guys. The new Heritage 6 wheel is the result of WELD’s recent acquisition of MOMO, which means that their wheel line is now custom and made to order. The design of the Heritage 6 is inspired by the race wheels used on the Ferrari 333SP and Porsche 935s of old, and it’s definitely apparent in the subtle styling of the wheel and MOMO namesakes, just under the lip of the wheel. With sizing available under 18 inches, I’m excited to see these wheels pop up on older JDM and Euro vehicles, as well as modern cars looking for some old-school flair. I missed you, MOMO.

Alpine ID X Series Complete System Review An all-inone system built with audiophiles and purists in mind.
O “Stereo music is much more than the ability of having two different sounds coming from each channel at the same time.”
46
bviously, there are a lot of high quality audio components available for our cars. Some people choose a system because it plays loud, while others may prefer tonal balance over raw SPL, but when you ask a true audiophile what they look for in a system, the answer may surprise you. Real audiophiles already expect systems to sound natural and be capable of volumes high enough to mimic the live event, so they tend to look for more subtle characteristics that are not immediately evident to a casual listener. ALPINE PRESENTS A PURIST’S PERSPECTIVE If we look at things from a purist’s perspective, the whole reason for listening to a stereo system is to try and recreate the feel, emotion, and realism of the actual event. Audiophiles spend countless blissful hours listening to their favorite recordings, not just for the music, but for the experience of the music. That means the audio playback system not only has to be accurate and natural sounding, but it also must recreate the original soundstage in front of the listener. Granted, some recordings
are better at this than others, but when it’s right, it can be amazing. This was the challenge accepted by Alpine’s engineers – to attempt to recreate the original experience as perfectly as possible. To achieve this would mean a complete redesign of their sound system philosophy and present significant technical challenges. To better understand these challenges, we first have to understand the basic principles of stereo sound. Stereo music is much more than the ability of having two different sounds coming from each channel at the same time. Everyone is probably familiar with the term “center image.” This refers to the ability of an audio system to create the illusion of the performer’s voice or instrument seemingly coming from a spot in open space exactly between the two speakers. When you get a system to do this spatial imaging really well, it’s pretty astonishing. The result is the ability to close your eyes and be able to “see” every performer across the width and depth of the stage, precisely where they were when the recording was made. To accomplish this, a stereo system must have the ability to very closely control
the arrival time and amplitude of every nuance of your music. If the system has errors in phase or frequency response, it can smear the stereo image and ruin the effect, preventing you from getting the most from the recording. Enter Alpine ID, or “Image Defined.” The goal for the Alpine ID products is to produce excellent tonal balance, dynamic range, and sound quality, all while creating a highly realistic sound stage. This new focus on stereo imaging permeates the entire line of products, from amplifiers and components to coaxial speakers and subwoofers. To accomplish the goal, Alpine created a whole new series of products that are specifically designed to be used together. The new X-Series amplifiers, speakers, and subwoofers are the first products that have been totally redesigned to meet the new Alpine ID spec. All Alpine ID-spec products are all-new designs, and should be used together for maximum performance. Alpine’s other products will likely also be redesigned to Alpine ID spec in time, with the eventual goal of all the Alpine ID-spec products having a “spatial imaging DNA” identified as unmistakably Alpine.

X-SERIES AMPLIFIERS The new X-Series amplifiers are designed with minimal phase shift and for maximum control of the loudspeaker cone movement. Minimizing phase shift keeps the audio frequencies properly aligned and allows the music to reach the listener’s ears in a way that preserves the soundstage and imaging of the original recording. By controlling the loudspeaker cone movement, the music is accurately reproduced with minimum coloration or distortion. The X-Series amplifiers are designed with a proprietary Alpine circuit design that simplifies the signal path while maintaining class-leading power density and reliability. A simpler topology results in less coloration and a reduction in phase shift, which is important to proper imaging. An exclusive dual feedback loop corrects any distortion in the signal and supports high frequency operation that exceeds the hi-res audio standard, all the way to 60 kHz. A cast aluminum heatsink design works by removing heat through the newly designed profile, with improved airflow and an increase in cooling surface area. Natural convection routes hot air though channels on each side of the amp and draws cool air in from below, eliminating the need for fan cooling. There are three new X-Series power density amplifiers: the five-channel X-A90V, the mono X-A90M, and the four-channel X-A70F.
@alpineusa
X-SERIES FULL RANGE SPEAKERS The X-Series speakers are built on a rugged cast aluminum frame and use Alpine’s proven HAMR (High Amplitude Multi-Roll) surround for great linear excursion. The speaker’s motor is designed with higher than normal linear force capability, thanks to the new radial neodymium motor structure. In this design, a pole-type neo magnet is located on the inside of the voice coil, rather than on the outside, as it would be in a traditional design. This improves the magnetic coupling of the voice coil and improves the efficiency of the delivery of power. An ancillary benefit is the magnet size is smaller, making for an easy installation in tight, confined spaces. The new nanofiber cone material is extremely lightweight and rigid, while maintaining good internal damping, an important factor in controlling unwanted ringing. When it came time to design the tweeters, Alpine selected carbon graphite material for its rigidity, while retaining the smoother sound of a soft dome diaphragm. The material allows for extended upper frequency response without harsh or biting sonics. There are three new Alpine ID based models, the X-S65C 6.5-inch two-way components, the X-S65 6.5-inch coaxials, and the X-S69C 6x9-inch two-way components.
@alpineusa
alpineusa
X-SERIES SUBWOOFERS Alpine’s X-Series subwoofers are also part of the Alpine ID design family and feature reduced distortion that can cause the woofer’s position to be more easily located. In order to increase output while reducing THD and maximizing transient response, the new subwoofers have increased control throughout the entire power range. With a linear Xmax of 24 mm, this woofer has 48 mm of throw, and is going to move a lot of air. There are dual spiders for precision control over the large dynamic range the system is capable of. To minimize distortion, dual shorting rings manage the voice coil’s motion in the magnetic gap, ensuring low THD and tight, accurate timbre from the lowmass, rigid pulp/mica cone. A center pole radial heatsink draws heat away from the voice coil and transfers it outside the motor for proper cooling under difficult conditions. The new X-Series woofers also feature the biggest HAMR surround yet, for linear cone movement throughout the large range of excursion.

Digital Time Alignment is on board to allow manipulation of the five channels of audio signal arrival times, to create the perfect soundstage for your listening position. Then there is a built in eleven-band EQ with various presets and user customizable curves, or a ProEQ function that allows you to select the frequency, boost and cut, as well as the Q of the filter. In addition to these tuning functions, a variable frequency two-way or three-way crossover controls the signals sent to external amplifiers, which are driven by three pairs of high performance pre-amp outputs. The subwoofer output also comes with an independently controllable level adjustment. Various audio source levels can be set independently in relationship to the tuner level. This prevents you from accidentally getting blasted out of the seat when you switch sources. A host of different DSP powered sound effects allow you to create a more realistic sound or soundstage from your favorite sources. A microphone for the Bluetooth hands-free function is included, and the unit is compatible with most factory steering wheel controls. (Adapter is required)

ence monitors, as well as a pair of 12-inch woofers driven by another studio amplifier. The signals sent to the amplifiers were completely controlled by the crossovers built into the JVC radio, as these amps do not have any sort of filtering built in. I have to say I am continually surprised at the very good sound quality available at such a low price these days. I did my listening with the EQ set flat, and the DSP sound effects off, and the results were very good. Sonic performance such as that found in this JVC was only available at the highest levels just a few years ago. Distortion and signal to noise both measured excellent for a reasonably priced unit, and frequency response was also sonically flat. Both the internal amplifier and the preamp outputs provided clean signals with good musicality and clarity. The controls operated smoothly and without any digital “zipper noise”. Music on regular CDs sounded open and natural, having good detail, no sense of compression, and without audible noise. Using a track I have with a 15 Hz note on it, I noticed from the movement of the woofer

cones that the unit had good bottom end output, and that should please the bassheads on a budget out there - you know who you are. This sort of low end response is fairly uncommon at the lower price points, so kudos to JVC for paying attention. While I can’t say it is as good as my $1,200 reference unit, I can say that the differences between them would probably go unnoticed by most average listeners.
ON THE BENCH As expected, the JVC KW-R935BTS measured fine, with no surprises. I would have liked to see the output impedance a bit lower, but for the price, I can’t complain. The built in amplifier delivered 17.8 watts x 4 and the FM tuner had good sensitivity, pulling in all of the local Phoenix stations without difficulty. AM performance was not quite as good, but still what I’d consider decent, especially if you live in an urban area. The 3.5-mm auxiliary input on the front panel will accept a full volt of signal without clipping, so it will be compatible with most any portable media player’s headphone output.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONALITY A large, easy to use volume control/menu selector knob is placed in the center of the panel, and a very easy to read LCD display is located just above it. To make it easy to read at greater off axis angles, the LCD is Vertically Aligned (VA) rather than the old Twisted Nematic (TN) technology. The display has large characters and a logical layout, providing information to the user with a quick glance. Buttons and controls are large and easy to use even with gloved fingers. The color and intensity of the front panel’s lighting is separated into two separate zones, one is the LCD information panel, and the other is the illumination used for other buttons and lighted trim line around the unit’s faceplate. In addition to intensity, these zones can be completely customized to your preferred choice of 49 different colors. The KW-R935BTS is also compatible with JVC’s Remote app, which will allow you to use your phone like a wireless remote via Bluetooth. The app can even display the radio’s screen on the phone, and adjustments to the audio can be made from the phones screen.
CONCLUSION The JVC KW-R935BTS is chock full of good technology. The vast array of sources and tuning capabilities it incorporates are going to be appreciated by anyone, whether making daily commutes or long road trips. And maybe best of all, having all this goodness available at a very reasonable price means the KW-R935BTS represents one of the best choices available in terms of value and functionality.

Pioneer TS-D12D2 12” Forceful, deep, and defined bass at incredible value, perfect for your choice of vented or sealed enclosures.
Subwoofer Review
I
f you’re serious about pounding out bass, then you already know you want a no-compromise, truly highperformance subwoofer that can handle the abuse it’s likely to see on a typical Saturday night. Well, this is the reason Pioneer created the D series of subwoofers. Pioneer calls these woofers “Forceful, Deep, and Defined,” and if you are a fan of strong bass, the D subwoofer could be just the woofer you’re looking for. The D subwoofers are available in 10- or 12-inch diameters and feature either dual two-ohm or dual four-ohm voice coil configurations. For this review, we’re going to put the TS-D12D2 through its paces here in the lab and see how it stacks up.
FEATURES The TS-D12D2 is a good looking, nicely finished product. The cone is made from aramid fiber interlaced injection molded polypropylene and has a smooth concave shape. The basket structure is heavy gauge stamped steel, and retains a 74-ounce double-stacked magnetic motor assembly. A molded rubber boot covers the magnet for cosmetic appeal. An injection
50
molded ABS trim ring adds visual appeal and nicely trims out the front side when installed. The large magnet structure drives the four-layer copper voice coil, which is wound on an aluminum former to dissipate heat efficiently. To aid the cooling process, the TS-D12D2 is also engineered with a vented pole piece, providing cooling air flow to the voice coil. Excursion is controlled by a butyl rubber surround and a metaaramid fiber spider. By introducing the aramid fiber into the cone and spider via a computer-aided manufacturing process, Pioneer greatly improves the strength and rigidity of the components without adding unwanted mass. Electrical connections are completed via nickel-plated, spring-loaded terminals that are generously sized and will accept 10-gauge wire easily.
mind, I chose to do my testing in an enclosure that comes in at 1.24 cubic feet, after the displacement of the woofer is subtracted. I chose this enclosure because it is designed to be used in sealed or vented modes, and it would simplify my testing. I began with the sealed enclosure and about 500 watts of good, clean power into the four-ohm load I made by wiring the dual coils in series. In this configuration, the woofer exhibited real “authority” in the output. I played a wide variety of music, from Donald Fagen to the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and the TS-D12D2 woofer performs admirably, no matter the tune, revealing excellent low extension and very good cone control. The brilliant bass line in Thom
Rotella's Friends sounds tight, musical and exceptionally well defined, which pretty much describes the overall sound character of the woofer in a sealed box. Then I switched to the vented type of enclosure, and the character of the woofer changed just as you’d expect. One important note when using a vented enclosure is to make sure you have a properly tuned subsonic filter on the amplifier. This ensures the woofer does not “unload” below the enclosure’s tuned frequency, which in my case was 36 Hz. A little of the very low frequency extension was missing, but the output was louder in general and had a musical punchy characteristic. This is exactly what the fans of vented enclosures are
LISTENING When it came time to listen to the TS-D12D2, I consulted the owner’s manual and found that Pioneer recommends either a sealed or vented enclosure, sized near one cubic foot. With that in

QUICK TECH SPECS looking for, and the Pioneer woofer doesn’t disappoint. During the vented session, I noted that extended bass notes, like those heard in Billy Idol’s Prodigal Son or Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s Not Fragile, were reproduced with serious authority. Another thing I liked about the Pioneer woofer was the lack of unwanted higher frequency output, which usually requires very steep crossover filters or lower crossover frequencies to remove. With the TS-D12D2, I could set the amp’s second order filter to 100 Hz without excessive high frequency output. This lack of high frequency “steering” is instrumental in getting the woofer to sound more like it’s coming out of your windshield than from behind you, and improves the overall sound of a system.

CONCLUSION
After an overnight cool down, the next morning I moved the woofer into the lab and measured the parameters and impedance curves using my Klippel R&D system. As expected from Pioneer, my measurements were very close to their published specifications and did indeed indicate the woofer could be used in either sealed or vented systems, leaving the preference to the individual owner’s taste.
The folks at Pioneer deserve to be commended for the incredible value these D-Series woofers offer. Whether you are looking for a sealed or vented system, or whether you have 100 or 600 watts of power, the same woofer can work for you. With one or two of these babies in your ride, you’ll have all the “Forceful, Deep, and Defined” bass you’ll ever need!.

THE MAGNUM OPUS OF A DATSUN BUILDER THAT STOLE THE SHOW AT SEMA 2017 Story by

Tucked into the suburbs of west Santa Ana, California, is a nondescript house not unlike any other house on the street, but behind the big single garage door is a working man’s personal workshop. If you were to take a peek into that garage on the right night, you would find Dominic Le hard at work on his magnum opus – his “last build for a while” after a long line of incredible projects – an SR20-powered 1971 Datsun 240Z with more character than many before it.

has made his name in the industry with multiple jaw-dropping Datsun builds, each one as incredible as the last. His build roster with Chasing Js, his own Japanese classic car resto-mod brand, is extensive. Two Datsun 510s, a 1973 Sunny UTE, and one of SEMA 2016’s show-stopper builds – the 1974 Datsun 260Z powered by a 1000-horsepower 2JZ. Before the 2JZ Datsun, all previous builds were powered by some form of SR20, and this year at SEMA 2017’s Toyo Treadpass, he returned to his roots with his dream car. “This car wasn’t planned to be a SEMA car,” Le laughs. “It was going to be my last build for a while, and I wanted a car just to have fun for drive-around time, but as the
T HE ISS UE
build progressed things got crazy.” One look beneath the hood at the titanium-decorated SR20DET lets us know that he’s not exaggerating – this thing is crazy. From front to back, the engine bay is decorated in a combination of burnt and unburnt titanium, providing a spectacular color scheme to the spotless bay. The SR20DET is bolstered with the help of a GReddy intake manifold, Tomei poncam, a combination of Manley and CP bottom-end internals, a Garrett GTX 3071r turbocharger custombuilt by Apexboost, and a long list of other go-fast goodies. Perhaps the most interesting part of the engine build is the conversion to a drive-by-wire system, courtesy of the DBW throttle body from a Scion FR-S. Le tells us that this is the world’s first drive-by-wire Z to his knowledge, and the first (if not the second) drive-by-wire SR20. Either way, that DBW system is a nice touch of modernization to the time-tested tuning icon that is the SR20DET. Electronic signals are handled by an Adaptronic M2000 ECU and custom harnesses courtesy of Rywire.

Part of what makes this 240Z so impressive is the fact that most of the car really was homemade. “Building a car at home is not the easiest thing to do,” he tells us, “and time management was really important since I only do this after I come home from my 9-5.” From the custom carbon fiber dashboard to the beautiful red reflective carbon fiber bumpers and front splitter, Le has certainly put in the hours to make this build unique. From the outside, the Datsun is eye-catching from all angles. The custom mixed red paint by
PPG stands out in any crowd, even among the cream of the crop in SEMA 2017’s Toyo Treadpass, and the custom reflective red carbon fiber is an attractive addition. Getting the car’s color scheme just right is a set of 15-inch Work Equip 40 wheels, tastefully finished with a Sprint Gold face and Bronze Anodized barrel for a modern take on a period correct look. At 9.5-inches wide in the front, and 10.5-inches wide in the rear, a set of JDM ZG flares widens the Z just enough to achieve a beefy and functional fitment with the Toyo R888R tires
measuring 205/50/15 up front, and 225/50/15 in the rear. With all that power and grip to boot, the Datsun needed to handle just as well - at least well enough to be a fun spirited Sunday driver. Most suspension components, like front and rear control arms, tie rods, and even coilovers with Swift springs, are custom made from billet. Providing rigidity to the chassis are custom front and rear strut bars made of titanium, courtesy of Chasing Js, and each one displays the brand name proudly on custom burnt titanium nameplates. The

details really come together in the places you can’t see from the driver’s seat. That said, the cockpit is no afterthought. Step into the 240Z's driver's seat, and you’re met with an impressive array of carbon fiber components. The dashboard, the seat backs, the center console, and even the door panels are all custom made Chasing Js special carbon fiber pieces. Some of the build’s overall themes are echoed inside as well. The steering wheel’s block-out horn delete plate is the same red reflective carbon fiber as the bumpers, and the floor mats, switch panel, and ATP short throw shifter feature the same titanium look found in the engine bay. All in, the entire build is one worthy of admiration and praise, and that’s exactly what Le received during his time at SEMA 2017. It wasn’t easy to follow up the 2JZ Datsun 260Z from last year, but by all accounts he seems to have succeeded thanks to a good network. “I only work with brands I can trust and people I can call
if there is a problem,” Le claims, naming Shawn from Adaptronic and Ryan from Rywire as his go-to electronics gurus. “This build challenged the heck out of me," he says. “From working with titanium to all the new electronics, one thing that I am grateful for that helped me out the most is keeping good people around.” He extends a big thank you to Shawn of Adaptronic, Ryan from Rywire, and of course, his wife Cindy for helping him run parts when he was either stuck in the office or under the car. With the garage build “finished” (is any build ever really finshed?), Le says that this is his last build for a while, and with two young children to raise and a full time job, that might be true for now. However, if this industry has taught us anything about passionate builders like Le, they always come back eventually.

GALEFORCE A hometown hero is someone to look up to. A local that excels in their respective outlet and lights up the field that they play in. Someone who, when they decide the time is right to exit that field, will be talked about for years after. In the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada, our hometown hero would have to be Jason Gale. The amount of class and quality he and his 370Z bring to any show they attend, even across the border, is unparalleled, and just like the play on words nickname he’s given the car, “GaleForce,” the car has swept across North America, leaving an impression everywhere it goes.

BEFORE
we get to where Ontario’s typhoon is now, let’s talk a little about Gale’s beginnings. You’ll be glad to know that he spent his first years of car building wrenching away on Hondas, just like most of us. It all started after installing an aftermarket stereo in a 1987 CRX Si, which gave Gale the push to chase after a career as a certified car audio installer. After getting a job at the best audio store in his area, the doors were open to build possibilities, and so a ’95 Civic hatch and Acura Integra soon followed. While Hondas were the cars he learned to wrench on, Gale had another car he pined for: Fairladys. And soon he made a huge switch, quitting his job for something different and selling his Hondas. Gale was ready for a project of a certain make and model.
“I always loved the Z cars from when I was very young,” Gale says, thinking back. “When the ads for the 370Z came out, I wasn't sure that I liked it until I actually saw one in person. Then I knew I had to have one. Now I'm back to building great projects again!” The first iteration of the GaleForce Z34 saw it in silver, wearing a JDM mix of a Mine’s carbon fiber front lip with Amuse side skirts and rear bumper. Next was a blue splash of paint, paired up with a full Varis’ Arising II kit and a set of gorgeous and lightweight matte blue gunmetal Volk TE37s. This leads us to the latest step it its evolution: Kamikaze. “My favourite aspect is the Varis Kamikaze widebody kit,” Gale gushes. “It was the first kit to be installed on a customer vehicle that wasn't Varis Japan’s own
demo vehicle and it’s the only full Kamikaze kit in North America.” While out in California to pick up the Kamikaze kit and get a proper install, Gale turned to Auto Explosion to set his kit even further apart from its sister kit in Japan. Instead of the exposed bolt install that most would use, Gale wanted to go molded for a seamless look, and instructed the crew at Auto Explosion to keep the body lines of the kit as they were meant to be, not filling in anything that didn’t absolutely need to be. The molded Z was then put through a fourstage painting process in a PPG custom blend of paint, specially named “GaleForce Kamikaze Blue.” The finished product is something to behold, as the Varis Kamikaze kit builds on the Arising kit and does it bigger in every way. Enlarged fenders take place on each corner of the car, looking like they’ve been shaped by a wind tunnel as they flow with and into the bodylines of the Z. To match

the added width, a carbon fiber lip splitter spans the distance from the outsides of each 285-wide flush front tire, while the rear is transformed into something that looks more akin to aerospace than automotive, with a huge carbon diffuser section and Varis’ 1,800-mm VSDC swan-neck wing channeling incoming air. This 370Z looks like it could take flight at any moment, and the molded body makes it seem like it would have almost no wind resistance. “I find influence from all types of builds,” Gale explains of his design choices. “I looked mostly to hot rods; their builds are timeless. They have mirror-like paintjobs and fine details. Japanese car culture provides me inspiration by pushing the envelope with original concepts and designs, as well as utilizing
exotic materials, such as titanium and carbon fiber.” Once the car made it home, it was apparent that the TE37s weren’t going to cut it under the fenders anymore, offset-wise. Not wanting to stack spacers, Gale looked into getting a custom set of wheels built, and HRE happened to have what he was looking for. Choosing the Classic 300’s tried and true mesh design, he spec’d the fronts to 19x10.5 and the rears to 19x12.5 – the perfect fit for the Kamikaze fenders. Gale even speci-

fied for the set to be as light as possible, so extra milling was done during the construction to get the 300s as close as possible to the weight of the outgoing TE37s. Bringing the 370Z down to hardpark height is a full AirRex air suspension system, which is upgraded to let Gale use his smartphone to lift or lower the car from the inside or outside, and a full set of SPL suspension adjustment arms specializing in camber and caster to dial in the Z’s stance. Tying together the front struts is a piece that Gale is particularly proud of: a Top Secret burnt titanium strut brace. As with any Top Secret part, they’re produced in very small batches, but this part is especially exclusive as one of only three in the entire world. Apparently, this single part took over two years to source. While most of the parts listed up until now seem more showoriented, this Z still has plenty of go. Under the hood is a Boosted Performance turbo kit, which features a single Precision Turbo 6266 twin-scroll turbocharger and a Treadstone Performance

intercooler, and when paired with the overhauled fuel system and R/T Tuning custom tune, GaleForce puts out a very respectable 522 rear-wheel horsepower and 476 lbft of torque at 11 pounds of boost. It’s definitely enough to spin those 325-wide tires out back. As someone who came up in the car audio community, Gale’s interior is a great place to be. From the choice in components, you know he knows what he’s doing. All speakers on the inside of the Z are produced by Focal, with Utopia Be tweeters and 165WRC 6.5-inch mid-bass speakers powered by an Elite FPS 2160 amp provide the musicality, while an Elite FPS 1500 amp supports a unique 13-inch Utopia Be 33 WX2 subwoofer for added bump. This all sits in a custom interior put together by G-Force garage, made up of Alcantara, leather, and hints of carbon fiber, completed with Takata Drift Pro LE racing seats and a custom DTC Motorsports steering wheel. The A-pillar gauge pod is actu-
ally of Gale’s creation – anything listed in his spec list as “3Gs Customs” is. What some people may not realize is that besides the paint, bodywork and upholstery, Gale installed everything else himself. If it’s audio or mechanical, it’s his handiwork. “There have been many challenges throughout this build, which is to be expected when you put so much time, energy, and money into it,” Gale says, knowingly. “All of the challenges are what makes a successful build so enjoyable when it finally all comes together.” Perfecting a craft takes time, even when you’re as experienced as Gale, and over three iterations of the same car, he’s built something that stops people in their
tracks, no matter which side of the border or which coast he’s on. Ontario’s hometown hero could be on his way to a show near you next, so you best make sure your Best of Show trophies are tied down when all that GaleForce wind arrives.

You know that feeling you get when you’ve done something DIY? It may have taken significantly longer than projected and made more of a mess than you initially thought, but that mixed feeling of pride, accomplishment, and satisfaction is enough to make you get a little addicted to doing it yourself. That feeling, plus the respect that’s earned in the enthusiast community through working on your own projects, explains why so many learn through wrenching themselves. Our friend, Eric Guerette, is a shining example of this.

by none other than himself and obsessed with constantly improving his car, Guerette was able to propel himself through our Tuner Battlegrounds Championship competition in 2016, eventually landing himself and his WRX in Vegas for the final showdown at SEMA. It was a respectful and humble, yet hardfought battle against Ger Reyes’ S2000, and Guerette ultimately came home with title of runnerup, but that didn’t discourage him one bit. Since coming home from Vegas, he’s been touring the U.S. and Canada, picking up hardware from shows and events all over. He even showed up the day after SEMA

ended to Subie Invasion, flaring his launch control over the exhaust note of the Mighty Car Mods boys’ “Subarute” creation for a noise level award. Showing up for the Tuner Battlegrounds Championship, Guerette’s WRX was finished in a Black Cherry paint by Sublime Auto, coating a JDM STI body kit and WRC-style front and rear widebody fenders from RPG Carbon. The engine bay is also coated in color – light green shaved bay walls house a de-stroked 2.35-liter EJ engine adorned with pink components, most notably the modified intake manifold from a 2011 Forester. The built EJ has been ported

and polished and packed with performance goodies, like Brian Crower Stage 2 camshafts, Manley H-beam connecting rods and pistons, and a full Supertech Inconel valvetrain. The head of the EJ has been swapped with one from a 2003 WRX and the crankshaft has been sourced from a Japanese EJ20, which has been nitrile coated. It’s a great mix of OEM and aftermarket to make a unique engine even more so. Power doesn’t stop there either. The turbo system on the stock WRX has been overhauled to utilize a front-mount intercooler instead of the top-mount synonymous with hood-scooped Subarus, and the

snail has been upgraded to a Garrett GTX3582R to really make this “S-car” go (because Subaru starts with “S” and escargot is a French play on snail because this car is from French Canada and it's turbo'd – never mind). To crank things up even further, a CRY02 nitrous spray kit has been thrown into the mix and is used right on time, junior. Transferring this power to the ground is an ACT clutch and flywheel spinning away inside a transmission from one of the most potent factory-offered Subarus with the longest name ever: STI Version 8 Spec C Type RA. “Cusco and Perrin inspire me with all of their experience on the platform,” says Guerette, which is definitely apparent due to his use of the names throughout the WRX. From header to tips is all Perrin, and a good chunk of the suspension is Cucso-branded, like the Zero 2 coilovers, sway bars, and rear control arms. The front control arms and strut bars were all donated by an STI. Inside, Guerette straps into Sparco Pro 2000 racing seats by way of NRG harnesses, and oversees Autometer gauges residing in RPG Carbon gauge pods. In the back seat sits a car seat for his young daughter since this show car is still a daily driver. We think that makes Guerette a pretty cool dad. After SEMA, the focus was on rounding out the build, and Guerette obviously thought some changes were needed out back. A new carbon fiber “Spec-1” duckbill trunk from Racing Performance Motorsports swings up to reveal recent audio addition in the trunk space. Poking out from the hardwood flooring is a 12-inch, 1,000watt, dual two-ohm SPLMAX subwoofer and just above it, mounted to the green-painted metal of the trunk wall, is a 1,200-watt monoblock and 400-watt four-channel amp, the latter of which powers the four 6.5-inch SRX two-way component speakers in the cabin – all from Kaption Audio.

It’s a venerable laundry list of modifications that’s made even more impressive when you realize that besides some paint and port and polishing, every other piece of this Subaru puzzle has been laid down and made fit by Guerette. Even more astonishing, this was his very first Subaru ever. Guerette has a love for off-road driving and rally cars, owning three Jeeps and a rally-built ’95 Civic Coupe that he wrecked during a snowstorm while doing some spirited trail driving. “I owned three Jeeps before selling them to get my Impreza,” he recalls. “I was a fan of rally cars, and this was the first turbo Impreza to come to Canada. I was originally going to build a racecar for lapping and time attack.” We’re glad that the WRX ended up being a car for the show circuit. That way, Guerette is able to show his handiwork to a vast audience, and as someone who’s more than qualified to run a “Built Not Bought” sticker on his ride, we’re glad he gets the chance to. “Always do it for yourself and not for others,” Guerette proudly says. “So many things have changed in my life from when I started. I'm very proud to have built this car myself. Always believe in yourself; it’s the best thing I learned from this project.”

The competition for 2016’s Tuner Battlegrounds at SEMA was intense, but was handled very humbly by both competitors. Hustling for votes through hashtag voting on Instagram and Twitter, online at TunerBattlegrounds.com, and even in person through the on-site ballot boxes, Gerbie Reyes and Eric Guerette earned every single one of the 3,634 votes collected in total. With 162 votes more than his competitor, however, Reyes and his S2000 came out on top over Guerette’s WRX for the win in Las Vegas, taking home the trophy and a PASMAG cover feature. Congratulations, Ger!

T H I S A I N ' T Y O U R G R A N D PA ' S C A M A R O When you hear the word "Camaro," what comes to mind depends on what you're into, but no matter what you imagine, we'll bet no one saw this coming. Miro Pavletic likes his classics chopped and dropped, and that's exactly what he did to this 1970 Z28. In addition to a liberal dose of carbon fiber, including the
hood and engine bay, the Camaro is equipped with a 6.2L supercharged LSA, a Tremec T56 "Tranzilla" transmission, and an ample amount of NOS for that extra jam. Styling cues come from a combination of drifting culture and Pro-Touring racecars of yesteryear. This Camaro is all rock 'n roll.

You’ve read the reviews, and followed everyone’s advice on upgrading your system. You have new speakers front and back, and a well-designed subwoofer system. Now you need power to drive everything, but space and budget are both looking tight. If you fit into that category, and particularly if you listen to a lot of compressed audio, the folks at JBL have a solution for you. With the GTR-7535 amplifier, you can drive five channels of audio, improve your system’s sound quality, and allow hands-free receiving of phone calls, all with one compact amp.
Community of Speed Corpus Christi, TX

Priced right around $549 in the U.S., the GTR-7535 is rated at 4x75 watts per channel into four ohms, and the sub channel is rated for up to 350 watts into two ohms. But this is an amplifier that brings a lot more than just power to the table.
