TO WRENCH, OR NOT TO WRENCH… N ot to get all “High School Musical” on you guys, but we’re all in this together. This whole taking a perfectly fine car from a dealer or a lot and making it all your own by changing parts out, adding parts on, or even deconstructing the vehicle and reconstructing it into something completely different thing we’ve all got going on is really special. It ties us all together, no matter which platform we’ve chosen, which style to follow, or what parts we’re planning to throw at our pride and joy. We’re all doing the same thing. We’re tuning. A lot of people who have gotten the mod bug have done so with their own two hands, in a garage or a driveway, with one purpose in mind: making that car their own. Those people are what this Tuner Handbook issue is geared towards. Inside, you’ll find tips an tricks from our columnists, inspiration from fellow builders with the DIY attitude, and even some important info on how to buy the right parts and how to get into one of the fastest emerging motorsports. Follow along with Garry Springgay as he gives you some “old guy tips” that he’s picked up over his years of both audio- and performance-inclined building, while Jacob Leveton fills us in on what the FIA is doin in Formula Drift, and Rob Kochis zeros in on finishing his sh w-to-track FR-S project. Our cover and a good chunk of this book belong to Gerbie Reyes and his wide Honda S2000, and for good reason: he is your 2016 Tuner Battlegrounds champion and this is his prize! After being involved in the TBG

Live battles, and eventually making his way up the ladder of Championship competition, Reyes took home the trophy in Vegas, earning his car the very front of this issue. Ger has a great and interesting story about triumph in a competition that he completely threw himself into, and it’s worth the read to get a feel for just what Tuner Battlegrounds is. His S2000 is really nice, too. Myself and Adam Gordon, PAS’s Associate Editor, both took on an educational piece each for this issue. I wanted to know how to navigate the oversaturated market of carbon fiber o find the good stu , and he wanted to know the most accessible way for anyone who’s interested to get into drifting. Through some lengthy chats with some passionate individuals ingrained in their respective passion, we feel like we’ve come up with some handy information that’s definitely worth your time. Let us know if you’d like to see more! As usual, you’ll find our ceaseless c verage of events and the hottest products out there, among everything else you’ve grown to love about PASMAG. We hope that if you’ve never turned a wrench before, this issue makes you want to – and if you have, keep doing so! This is a community you’ll never regret being a part of (well, except for your bank account, but we don’t talk about that). Have fun out there!

THE FIA SLIDES INTO DRIFTING
Over the years, drifting has long been seen as the outcast of the motorsports community due to the subjective nature of judging. While safety measures and transparency in judging criteria have drastically improved in Formula Drift, there’s still variance from country to country around the world.
Pictured, from L to R: Robbie Nishida (Formula D USA competitor / Formula D Asia judge), (Judge for various European drifting organizations), Christer Halvorsen (Drifting organizer for Gatebil festival), Ryan Lanteigne (Formula D USA judge)
A
few years back, the global motorsports sanctioning body known as the FIA (Federation Internationale de L’Automobile) started to take interest in learning about drifting. Formula Drift cofounder Jim Liaw embraced the organization and started working closely with FIA officials to uncover the details of the sport that he has helped build. Over the past year or so, two working groups have been formed to help the FIA learn about drifting and hopefully start to set standards around the sport that can be followed globally. The first working group, known loosely as the “Drifting Working Group”, is comprised of select FIA officials, as well as a handful of organizers from

around the world. The second working group, a more specific “Judging” working group, includes Formula Drift USA judge Ryan Lanteigne and a handful of other judges and officials from around the US. We caught up with both Liaw and Lanteigne to get some quick feedback from them on how FIA involvement could help the sport. PAS: What benefits do you see to the FIA being more involved in the sport? Jim Liaw: One benefit that I see coming is a standardized rules package. For example, a GT3-spec car can race in various racing series across the world. It is beneficial because a competitor/team is able to move from series to series without building a new car. That same competi-
tor/team is also able sell their competition car to anyone in the world that compete in a similar level of drifting. This is valuable because builders will be able to build same spec cars to all parts of the world and car owners will have an asset in their car because they will be able to resell it to anywhere in the world. Eventually we may get manufacturer support via “ready to race” programs, similar to the Audi S3 LMS (as TCR-spec car) or the Ford Mustang GT4. Ryan Lanteigne: I think one of the main benefits of the FIA’s involvement is adding legitimacy to a motorsport that we as fans know it deserves. Drifting is a relatively young motorsport when compared to heavy hitters such as F1 or NASCAR, for example, and it will need the support of larger, non-endemic sponsors to succeed in the long term. The FIA’s involvement is a big step in the right direction if drifting is to be taken seriously by those big sponsors. PAS: Some people fear that the FIA’s involvement will inflate costs for drivers due to requiring licensing and fees to be paid to the FIA. What are your thoughts on this?
JL: Frankly, it is quite possible that a driver will need a national competition license and an additional international competition license, but let’s not jump to any conclusions just yet. Drifting is unlike any of the traditional racing formats and thus we are all navigating new ground, which means we cannot assume that what applies for rally cars or formula cars applies to drifting. PAS: Judging criteria differ widely from country to country, series to series. Do you feel that the FIA’s involvement could help create a more universal ‘standard’ for judging internationally? RL: That’s exactly what my involvement with the FIA entails. Last fall, we formed the FIA Judging Working Group, which then consisted of Christer Halvorsen, David Kalas, Robbie Nishida, and myself. In the future, we plan on adding more international members to the group with the primary goal of developing a set of judging regulations that will be used for the upcoming FIA Drifting Intercontinental Cup. From that main set of judging regulations, we also plan to create regulations for different levels of drifting, from Pro down to Amateur levels.

HEADACHES AND HORSEPOWER Photography By Andrew Gessler (
@gesswhomedia)
This was initially supposed to be the column that I wrapped up the build timeline and showed you the finished product, but as any project car goes: if something can go wrong, it will. My misfortune was a bad idle, followed up by some power handling issues. Let’s take a look at those, shall we?
I
t’s been an absolute headache sorting this thing out, but thankfully I’m working with the best in the industry. I had an idle issue that contributed to a few things, but the main one was that the vacuum lines kept popping off f the intake manifold. Being an experienced builder and tuner, Ronnie over at RD Engineering was able to identify and sort all of these issues and retuned the car. As mentioned in my previous column, the car made more power than I expected,
but that was when the car was having multiple issues. Now that the idle issue and everything is sorted out, the power is even smoother and more linear. On a standard dyno before, the car made around 360 wheel-horsepower, but the car pulls way harder now. My tuner is estimating at least another 70 to 80 whp. I was in shock and in disbelief that the car is now making so much power, and when I finally got to drive it, I realized that it’s no joke. Unfortunately, I wasn’t laughing long. The car pulls
extremely hard, but not until about 5,000 rpm, and then it dies a little short of redline. Ronnie and I consulted with Vortech as to why this would be the case. They said that the car, according to their math, with the supporting mods and fueling, should be making about 500 crank horsepower. They also said that I’m overspinning the blower a few thousand RPM, as the 2.87-inch pulley that I am running is too small for the raised redline and V2 blower. In order to make more power lower in the powerband, I’ll be switch-
ing out the pulley to the bigger 3.125-inch, as well as swapping out the stock intake manifold for the superior 2017 OE model. There have been multiple FA20s equipped with boost and E85 that have swapped to this manifold and netted over 20 to 30 whp at redline! This should put me back around the same power at redline as the 2.87-inch pulley in theory, but give me more power around 3,000 to 4,000 rpm, according to Vortech and RD Engineering. All the headaches of the past couple months have given us so much knowledge about this motor and platform. MotoIQ and I were originally looking for a reliable 300 to 320 whp with E85 at redline, but this setup demolished that goal. Now all the car needs is a few bits of alignment adjustment and everything should feel great! Next up is sorting out the trunk set up with a revised OEM Audio+ setup to work with the four-point Battle Version roll bar. The next update should be the car finalized – for real this time.

“OLD GUY TRICKS” FOR THE DIY’ER
For the Tuner Handbook issue, I thought I’d share a couple of what my son calls “old guy tricks.” These tips come from years of skinned knuckles and the addition of a few curse words in my vocabulary.
T
he first is a common mistake that everyone has done at one time or another. You just installed some sort of electronic device with a complex wiring harness that got run through the firewall, bulkhead or door jamb. You have made all the connections, and everything is connected and zip-tied into place. You have tested it, and it all works perfect - but, just as you are ready to crack open that celebratory cold bever-
18
PASMAG
age, you realize you forgot to install the rubber grommet in the hole in the sheetmetal. You know you can’t leave it like it is because the sharp metal will cut through the wire insulation in days, if not hours. When that happens, not only will your new gadget stop working, but it could potentially burn your car to the ground as well. So, you have to protect those wires but don’t want to tear it all out, just to install the grommet. The solution is simple! Just
take the proper sized grommet and cut it so you create a split section to pass the wires through. Now with the grommet around the harness, coat it with WD-40 or a similar lubricant, and starting with one side of the split, work it into the hole in the firewall all the way around. Now the grommet is protecting the wires and the cold beverage can be enjoyed! Here’s another quick and easy tip that can prevent your vocabulary of curse words from growing. Anyone who has worked on almost anything has experienced trying to remove a stuck Phillips screw. This can be frustrating as well as expensive if you completely round off t e screw head attempting to remove it. Here’s what I do to prevent the problem. At the first sign of
the screwdriver tip slipping in the screw head, I don’t try to force it. I simply dip the tip of the screwdriver into some valve grinding compound, (available at any auto parts store) and try it again. The compound provides some “traction” for the screwdriver and, more often than not, allows the screw to be removed. If it’s still too tight, I resort to an impact driver. This can be an electric drill type or a simple handheld one that turns the bit as you strike it with a hammer. In all but the most extreme cases, the screw will come right out. One last tip, whenever you have to resort to these measures to remove a screw, for goodness sakes don’t use it again! Replace the screw with a new one, so you have a fighting chance next time it has to come apart.

ON FATE OF THE FURIOUS IF
someone were to graph out car modific tion interest by year, that line would explode like a certain Eclipse with a “Danger to Manifold” warning right around The Fast and the Furious’ release date in 2001. The Fast & Furious series was the catalyst for so many enthusiasts to bring out that latent build bug and start modifying their cars their way. Sixteen years later, and PASMAG is still getting the response “Fast & Furious” when we ask our feature car owners what their biggest inspirations were. Over the span of seven films we’ve seen Dom and his extended family drive and slide almost every make and model of vehicle, in nearly every country on Earth. Now, in the eighth installment, everything seems just peachy. Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia are retired to the good life, while the rest of the crew are enjoying life with rad cars, privacy, and doing things that are non-life-threatening. While some people might be okay with watching a lighthearted movie like that, F&F fans need some octane, stunts, bullets, and explosions.

FA M I LY N O M O R E ?
Story by Micky Slinger (with notes by Adam Photography courtesy of Universal Pictures
Gordon)
A mysterious woman named Cipher (Charlize Theron) somehow seduces Dom back into a life of crime that pits him against his old crew and family, and he can’t seem to escape. Is it the result of brainwashing, blackmail, or something else entirely? We’ll have to wait until April 14th to really discover what The Fate of the Furious will be (see what I did there?). In the meantime, we were able to sit down with Tyrese Gibson, who plays Roman Pearce, the fasttalking joker of the crew or “double alpha/man candy,” depending on who you ask, and ask him about himself and his experiences shooting The Fate of the Furious.

How does The Fate of the Furious compare to previous titles in the series?
HEY, MAN, I CAN JUST TELL YOU NOW: I HAD A HUGE ISSUE WITH THEM DOING THIS TO VIN, AND COMING UP WITH THE IDEA TO DO THIS, UNTIL I SAW THE MOVIE."
The Fate of the Furious was really inspired by “F8.” The letter “F” and the number “8,” you know? Fate. So, we ran with “F8,” “Fast 8,” and that lead to “Fate of the Furious.” And that’s the question: What is the Fate of the Furious? You’ve got Dominic Toretto turning his back on us all, and we’re all confused and in the dark, not knowing why. We’re just on this whole mission to get to the bottom of what the hell is going on. It’s all weird. Hey, man, I can just tell you now: I had a huge issue with them doing this to Vin, and coming up with the idea to do this, until I saw the movie. When I saw the movie, I said, “You know what? This is why you work for hire and you don’t work at a studio or write scripts. This is why. You just stick to being Roman Pearce. You’re doing just fine ” I was blown away, man. F. Gary Gray, man. This director. He can just go to the mall and walk around like a regular guy, and nobody knows who the hell he is, but the s*** this dude has going on in his head – he’s from another planet. This dude is a humble genius. To go from Straight Outta Compton to Fate of the Furious in itself, like get the f*** out of here. What are you doing? This dude is on another level.
Furious 7 is a pretty tough act to follow. Can you tell us how you guys stepped it up for this next installment?
To be honest, man, everything went up a notch. We were the fi st to shoot in Cuba – the fi st Hollywood movie in 50 years to shoot in Cuba. What was crazy was, we were fi st, and Transformers was second. We shot in Iceland, and that was crazy because it was 28-belowzero, which was not fun. Like, I hate the cold. I hate it. It was a crazy experience though, man. The overall scope of this movie - even we couldn’t believe that it could be any bigger, but it’s as big as it gets right now.
As part of the Fast & Furious films, you’ve been involved in some pretty crazy stunts. What did you get up to this time around?
As you’ve seen in the trailer, they’ve got me sliding on ice, on top of an orange Lamborghini door, which is all f***** up. It’s just wrong. That, to me, was the craziest stunt I’ve ever done because we’re literally doing this scene on top of a frozen lake in Iceland and I’m laying on top of a door, being dragged by a truck, which is being held onto by a string. There’s the rope in front of me, and they’re dragging me for like two miles each take, really fast. It’s already 28-below-zero when you’re standing still, so it gets even colder when your face is out and you’re being dragged on top of a frozen lake at like 60-miles-anhour. So, I didn’t really have a good time. I did that for seven takes. They made me earn it this time, my brother.

Do you spend a lot of time around sportscars and supercars off-set?
I can’t speak for everybody, but I stay away from super loud cars, like Ferraris, Lambos, and custom ridiculousness. I’m not really completely consumed in the culture on the level that Paul Walker was. Ludacris is. There are a couple of us in the cast that really aren’t into it outside of the movie. That’s not really me. I rock with it, I love it, I appreciate it, I’m a part of the culture, a part of the biggest franchise ever that has nothing but customized cars - but if I have a Friday or a Saturday and I find ou they’re drag racing, would I go to it? No. No, I would not.
What are you listening to these days?
If you could have any ride on Earth, what would it be? Or do you already own it?
I’m in my dream car right now, which is the Rolls Royce Wraith, the twodoor. Also, I’ve got a Mercedes-branded Sprinter van that I’ve completely gutted out and made it into what I call the “Voltron Ghost Sprinter.” You guys have to pull up my Rebel Jeep. Have y’all seen the Voltron Rebel Jeep? Go to VoltronMotors.com. Two of these Jeeps are in Fast 8. They’re ridiculous. Pull up the webpage real quick, I want y’all to see this thing. (We pull up the website quickly and freak out over how rad these custom Jeeps are.) We’re talking about supercharged magic right there. I mean, every customized Jeep imaginable is there, and people can literally go to the site and build their own Jeep.
I’m just listening to R&B songs, man, unless I’m feeling turnt up or all I’m all hype, then I put on some hip hop. I love Rick Ross’ new album. I was just listening to it last night, it just came out, and I think that dude right there is one of the best rappers out there. I love Drake. I love Rick Ross because his albums are just crazy. He picks the perfect beats. He just always comes with it. It really reminds me of Biggie and what hip hop used to be. Right now, people just have a bunch of albums, and they put the albums together, but they don’t feel like anything. It doesn’t feel like a real vibe.
What are things like on the set of Fast & Furious?
This is what I do. On the set, I’m the guy that everyone comes to for good energy. I’m Mr. Positivity. I’m also the therapist for everybody in the movie, okay? I keep everybody together, I keep the peace. So, I have a big trailer, and I created this fun experience with chess, Connect Four, Uno cards, and everyone is always in my section everyday on the set because there is no section that’s more fun. That’s who I am. We get to talk about things, conversate, and take ourselves out and away from the pressure of these mega movies that we’re working on, money being spent, and family. It’s escapism. Within escapism, I create escapism.
What is the message that you hope fans go home with after seeing the film in theaters?
I just hope they understand that with family comes loyalty, and with family comes challenges. I think the fans should know that we are under more pressure than people could imagine to deliver something better every time. It’s been going on for 16 years. We’re fi st and only non-comicHAVE Y’ALL SEEN THE VOLTRON the book, non-TV-show to have this REBEL JEEP?... WE’RE TALKING many movies in a franchise. It’s ABOUT SUPERCHARGED MAGIC crazy. eith Jarvis has had years of experience building and showcasing different show cars, but his latest creation is something unlike we’ve ever seen before. Despite a lack of prominent aftermarket support, Jarvis wanted to take an under-used and under-appreciated platform to show-worthy levels, and he’s managed to go well above and beyond what most people consider show-worthy. However, the road here wasn’t an easy one. “After being involved in such a devastating car accident and losing a newly built show car, I was frustrated, confused, and pretty deflated,” he writes, telling us about the time his Mercedes C300 was written off in a tragic accident. “Losing a show car in the way that I did was one of the hardest things I’ve been through.” Luckily for him, and us, Jarvis isn’t the quitting type. He took his frustration and channeled that energy into creativity for his next project.

“I always thought the 300M Special would make a great show car and I wanted to be the one to do it. Having already known its stock features from owning one new in 2002, I had plenty of ideas on how to take it to the next level.” With a repertoire of build experience, and a thorough knowledge of the platform, his newest 300M project was underway in no time. Most of the modifications to the 300M, now dubbed “M-Pressive”, began in April 2015 with the air ride setup, custom trunk, and some lighting mods. Through careful planning, something Jarvis stresses as utterly important in the execution of the build, he brought the 300M to new

heights, literally and figuratively. With a crazy trunk setup that includes a waterfall and a custom enclosure, and a completely overhauled interior, the Chrysler has changed as much on the inside as it has on the outside. What makes this build especially impressive is the amount of custom work that went into it, something that Jarvis takes pride in, and also encourages others to entertain. “Don’t get turned off by not having bolt-on options – it’s truly customized when you can’t just order a part and install it,” he says. “Take the challenge and you won’t be disappointed with the outcome.” We couldn’t agree more.

erard Patrick Gonzales fell in love with the Rocket Bunny Lexus RC as soon as he saw the one built by Importfest making its way across social media. The aggressive front grille design combined with the wild style of the full kit was enough to push him to buy an RC350 F-Sport of his own after a test drive just one year later. Having previously gained building experience with a Scion FR-S, Gonzales had all the tools and skills he needed to assemble the car himself. “One of the major challenges was finding parts” he says. "Lexus brand does not have much variety in aftermarket parts, so I'm limited to only a few parts chosen for this car. Also I had to be careful with tire sizes for them not to hit the inner

He went with Volk’s TE37 Ultra Forged wheels in order to maintain some classic simplicity. “I've seen a lot of modern, funky sets of wheels but I like to stick to the classics. Gonzales extends a huge thankyou to his girlfriend, family, friends , sponsors, and his crew, Lost Royalty for all the support he has received throughout the build process of both of his cars. He also ends with some humility. “My build is not top of the line and it isn't the best of the best out there, but for me, my build is perfect just the way it is. It took a lot of time and dedication but I have no regrets.”

Whether you’re looking to reduce weight, improve aerodynamics and downforce, or just add a little flare to your ride, carbon fiber now has a wide array of uses. What was once an exclusive material that belonged solely to the aerospace industry, carbon fiber started making waves in motorsport, and then unsurprisingly trickled down to the automotive masses. Through innovations in the production process, carbon fiber has become much more accessible to manufacturers and resellers, which has also led to many differing degrees of construction and quality that can lend to your build in different ways. So, how do you wade through all the different weaves and resins out there to find what’s good for you? Ask a pro, of course! Will Giroux owns and operates FiSiK Aero out of Quebec, Canada, and makes aero parts out of just about any material you can, but his favorite remains carbon fiber. We figured he’d be the best to chat with, and did he ever have a lot to say! If you’re interested in making your car lighter, faster, and stronger, read on.

CARBON FIBER
Tell me about the story behind FiSiK. How long have you been in the business of making aerodynamic parts for cars?
The business was created in September 2016. I’ve had various experiences in the past in development, parts manufacturing, and custom work. My high level of understanding of physics, I believe, makes us one of the best manufacturers on the market. It all started with my crazy ideas for custom parts for my own car, but a lot of people started being interested by those parts, and that’s how we gave birth to FiSiK Aero. Basically, a chassis-mount wing idea for a hatchback WRX and STI without losing the use of the hatch or having to bring tools to access the hatch, as well as enlarging the fenders of my car is what brought us to life.
THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THEM ALL IS TENSILE STRENGTH. IT ALLOWS THE PART TO BE EXTREMELY STRONG WHEN COMPARING IT TO SOME OTHER MATERIAL SUCH AS FIBERGLAS S OR METAL.
Is there a meaning behind the word “FiSiK” in the company’s name?
FiSiK is a deviated word of “physic.” That word defines us because e do all our R&D in-house using only the best CAD and simulation software available on the market to ensure the best output and balance of all our parts, both for our off-the-shelf and our custom products. What are the characteristics of carbon fi er that make it ideal for automotive use?
The most important of them all is tensile strength. It allows the part to be extremely strong when comparing it to some other material such as fiberglass or metal. Whe under dynamic load, it allows the part to keep its mechanical properties and shape, therefore allowing better results when in high-stress situations, such as downforce created by a rear wing for example.
What should you look at when looking to buy a carbon fi er component?
Most important of all is the manufacturing process and material used during manufacturing. Manufacturing process is where the biggest difference will be made. It’s important to know there are various methods to produce composite products, and they all have their pros and cons. In the automotive sector, hand layout, vacuum bagging, resin injection, resin infusion and prepreg are the most popular methods used. To understand the difference between all these methods, we need to know the best ratio of fabric to resin range is between 40 and 50 percent. That means for 50 grams (1.8 ounces) of fabric, we will have between 40 and 50 grams (1.4 to 1.8 ounces) of resin. When going with a hand layout process, the manufacturer really has no control on the ratio, which can cause a product to be heavier and allows imperfections in the part, such as air bubbles and dry spots. I’d recommend to avoid this method at all costs! Resin injection is similar to hand layout, but is done by machines. This is the most popular method used in China for their part manufacturing. It allows a fairly quick manufacturing process and batch production, but as with the hand layout, there is no real control on resin quantity and possible imperfections are still a thing. It’s a better option than hand layout, but I would still recommend to avoid this method if possible. Vacuum bagging is a process that removes all air in the part, which minimizes imperfections and allows a better ratio by getting some of the excess resin out of the part.
52
PASMAG
It is a way better manufacturing method than the other two, and is used by many smaller composite shops that don’t have access to larger equipment. Resin infusion and prepreg are the best methods on the market. Both of them are similar in terms of results with only very small differences. Resin infusion is a process where fabrics are laid in a mold, and then put under vacuum. Resin is then allowed to fl w into the part, replacing all of the air, which makes a perfectly finishe part with the best mechanical properties possible. The ratio in such parts are in the 50 percent range. This method is used by most composite shops since it allows for greater quality control and minimal equipment requirements. Prepreg means pre-impregnated. It’s a process using carbon fibe that is pre-impregnated with resin at a specific ratio. e have found 42 percent to be the best ratio here. The process requires the manufacturer to cut down the prepreg, stick it in the mold, vacuum bag it, and finally insert i in an autoclave. The autoclave is an expensive piece of equipment, which means only some manufacturers will use this manufacturing method, but it’s the only one that allows us to manufacture a part at a very specific resin ratio. Ther are virtually no imperfections when using this method, and it also produces the best looking, lightest weight, and strongest parts. In-house, we use both infusion and prepreg for manufacturing, as both have their pros and cons, but our method of choice is prepreg for the best parts possible.

AAU TO C L AV E specialized heat and pressure chamber that’s used to cure prepreg carbon fiber pieces.
Carbon fi er parts can get pretty pricey, so some enthusiasts will opt for a fi erglass (FRP) part instead. What are they missing out on if they go with FRP over CF? Is it a big deal?
To be honest, there is really no real answer to this as it really comes down to what the part is. Fiberglass is a bit heavier than carbon fibe , but the difference in automotive applications is very minimal. If the part requires a high level of strength, fiberglass is a ar less viable option than carbon fibe . Some of the best examples are front splitters or a rear wing. Let’s look at one of our most recent products: a chassis-mounted wing for an Audi S5 that produces 473 pounds of downforce at 120 mph. At that specific dynamic load, fiberglass ould distort and transfer way less to the frame of the car, resulting in less downforce. When looking at front fenders though, there really is no real advantages to go with carbon fiber ins ead of fiberglass other than the look and a very minimal weight saving.
THE EXTERIOR FINISH OF AART P DOES NOT HAVE AN EFFECT ON QUALITY . I REALL Y WOULD SUGGEST YOU THINK TWICE BEFORE PURCHASING A PRODUCT FROM A MANUFACTURER CLAIMING THE MA TTE FINISH OF THEIR PRODUCT IS DUEOTTHE FACT THAT IT IS DR Y CARBON FIBER. THA T’S 100-PERCENT FALSE.

CARBON FIBER
WET PARTS ARE HEAVIER THAN THEIR C OUNTERPARTS AND, MOST OF THE TIME, EQUALS LESS QUALITY C ONTROL, HIGHER DEFE CT RATE, AND A HIGHER CHANCE OF HAVING AIR BUBBLE S, CREATING A VOID . Wet versus dry carbon: what are the pros and cons of each? When should you go for one over the other?
Well, to start, it is important to know the difference between both. Wet carbon is a term used to classify carbon fiber product manu actured using more resin than is really needed – more than 50 percent, usually. Those methods include hand layout, resin injection, and vacuum bagging in some cases. Dry carbon, on the other hand, is used to define carbon fiber pa s made by resin infusion or prepreg. Certain vacuumbagged parts can be classified as d y, too. Wet parts are heavier than their counterparts and, most of the time, equals less quality control, higher defect rate, and a higher chance of having air bubbles, creating a void. It is way cheaper to produce than dry carbon fibe , and is the way to go for some people, but it’s important to understand the downsides of these parts. Dry carbon fiber par s, therefore, are best when it comes to weight reduction, rigidity, strength, and finish. e often get asked why dry carbon fiber par s come in a matte finish. This is
concept that shouldn’t be linked to wet or dry carbon fibe , as both can be matte or glossy. It really comes down to how they are made in the mold, and truly has zero impact on the glossiness of a part. The exterior finish of a part doe not have an effect on quality. I really would suggest you think twice before purchasing a product from a manufacturer claiming the matte finish of their product is due o the fact that it is dry carbon fibe . That’s 100-percent false. Take me through the process of making a carbon fi er part at FiSiK Aero from start to finish. Do ou use any techniques that are unique to your shop? How long does it take to make a product usually?
Let’s go through prepreg part manufacturing. Once the mold is done, we cut the prepreg material in the desired shape. Once cut, we lay them by hand in the mold to ensure perfect fi ment, weave alignment, and ensure the plies of carbon are all perfectly placed in the mold. Depending on the part, we might include a Nomex core sandwiched between two plies to have the
most rigid part possible while saving weight. Once every part is laid in the mold, we stick a release film, breather cloth, and acuum bagging film on op of the carbon fibe , and then put it under vacuum. When there is no more air in the bag, we perform a drop test to ensure there are absolutely zero leaks in the bagging system. Then it goes in our autoclave and is heated up to cure. Once the parts are fully cured, we trim the parts using our powerful rotary tools. Next is a very strict inspection, followed by a light sanding using an orbital sander. We then bring them upstairs to the spray booth and spray them with our very own UV-resistant high-gloss topcoat to ensure the desired finish and look of our par s. The final s ep is wet sanding and polishing for a mirror-like finish The time it takes to do a part really depends on the method we use to manufacture it, the work needed, lead time, and more. It can vary anywhere from 48 hours, all the way to three weeks depending on those factors.

NAerospace-grade OMEX aramid fiber (like Kevlar) that is
constructed in a honeycomb configuration. Its light weight and high rigidity, plus its willingness to bond with resins, makes it a favorite among carbon fiber aero manufacturers.
Do different weaves make a difference in the end product? What are the best ones to look for when purchasing a carbon fi er product?
To say it doesn't would be lying, but explaining to a customer the whole process of choosing which weaves to use would have no end. There is no key to what is the best to use, but there are some factors to think of when manufacturing a product. The key thing to understand is that the tighter the carbon is woven, the better it is, which means 1K carbon is stronger than 12K carbon. In automotive, the most popular weaving is 3K due to its incredible strength, accessible cost and beautiful look. Plain weaves are also stronger than twill weaves, but the difference is minor. Twill weaves also look better than plain weave and are the most used fiber eave on the market. Both epoxy and polyester resin are used in the manufacturing of carbon fi er parts. Is one better than the other?
Yes, both are used by manufacturers, but one clearly is better than another. Epoxy can hold up to 2,000 pounds per square-inch, while polyester resin only can barely hold 500 pounds per square-inch. Epoxy is also way more resistant to wear, peeling, and cracking. It’s very important to know which resin has been used during the manufacturing process. Many manufacturers will use polyester resin on an expensive part, yet these parts don’t have that extra strength that can only provided by epoxy.
“carbon fibe ” parts available on AliExpress, eBay, or other Chinese-dominated markets, as these parts are marketed as carbon fibe , but are the best examples of 25-to-75-percent ratio parts. Is a part that is carbon fi er “skinned” still better than a regular FRP piece, or does that not make a difference?
When done correctly, yes, it is better. By skinning or fusing a layer of carbon fibe , you are adding the mechanical properties of carbon fiber o the part. It’s still far from being optimal for body panels, but perfectly fine or low stress parts, such as trim pieces and garnish. Do colored carbon fi ers have the same characteristics as regular carbon fi er? How is the color woven into the carbon fi er?
Colored carbon has exactly the same characteristics as regular carbon fibe . The color in colored carbon fiber is added y dying the fibe before weaving it into a fabric. This really doesn’t affect properties at all, and is purely cosmetic. Colored carbon fibe s are not the same as carbon-Kevlar parts however. Yes carbon-Kevalr is a different color, but that is a specific chara teristic due to the mix of carbon and Kevlar.
Do you have any tips or tricks in identifying fake carbon fi er parts or look-alikes?
Unfortunately, the only way to really find ou would be to cut the part in half. But that’s probably not something you want to do. The only other way to know how a part is made is to ask the manufacturer or reseller. They must know how their parts are made and should be telling you exactly how. If they can’t or won’t, you shouldn’t be buying from them. It’s also important to understand that many manufacturers selling “carbon fibe ” parts are actually selling 25-percent carbon fiber an 75-percent fiberglass par s, and those cannot be compared to the real deal. Challenging the manufacturer to know the composition of their parts is perfectly acceptable. Be aware of cheap

THE ONLY OTHER WAY TO KNOW HOW A PART IS MADE IS TO ASK THE MANUFACTURER OR RESELLER. THEY MUST KNOW HOW THEIR PARTS ARE MADE AND SHOULD BE TELLING Y OU EXACTL Y HOW. IF THEY CAN’T OR WON’T, YOU SHOULDN’T BE BUYING FROM THEM. Now that you’ve got a carbon buildup of knowledge, you can hunt down those woven beauties with confidence. you have any inkling of what our Tuner Battlegrounds competition is, you’ll know how important a social media following is to how well you do, or don’t do. When Reyes was gearing up for his very fi st TBG Live event at Calgary’s iteration of the Driven Show, he didn’t even know what a hashtag was. “I have always piggy backed on a shared Facebook account with my wife, Kathy, but never had one of my own,” Reyes admits. “I had to get my own Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts with the help of others showing me what to do.” Luckily for him, those who he

lists as his biggest motivators in his dreams to be champ (among the rest of the Garage 106 team he’s a part of) are none other than Anthony De Guzman and Benji Tran, 2014's and 2015's TBG Champions. Having someone who’s been there and come away with the whole thing is a huge help, but having two is even better! Since starting up his social media presence, his Instagram alone has garnered him over 5,000 followers, and he did it all without a Fit Tea sponsorship. Now, some of you may be putting some pieces together and figuring out that since eyes and

You’d also be right if you were asking, “weren’t the past two winners also from Winnipeg?” No, we can’t explain it. The only thing we can say is that Winnipeg, Manitoba, has some serious car culture when it’s not covered in snow, and the rest of North America needs to step it up if they ever want to come out on top over this solid community. Another community that Reyes credits with a huge helping hand in his victory is his church. Reyes is a devout Christian and he says that his faith is what led him to building his S2000 to such a degree in the fi st place.

I saw what most car builders see beyond the broken, beat-up, and abandoned state of a used car: a platform that had a lot of potential to become something great.” It turns out that Reyes’ foresight was accurate when it came to the dead and frozen, six-speed, RWD convertible with a 9,000 RPM redline. For him, a car build starts on the inside and works its way out, so Reyes, with the help of Danny Dunning from Speed Factor Racing, dug in under the hood. With 1,898 total votes to Guerette’s 1,736, Reyes took home the custom trophy for the 204 for the third time in a row. While Guerette killed it on Facebook, Reyes pulled away with Instagram posts and physical voting at the show, no doubt because he and his team were hustling so hard the whole week. “This has been one of the most thrilling experiences I’ve ever faced,” Reyes says, graciously. “I hope people see that teamwork, unity, prayers, and dedication prevailed through my journey in the Tuner Battlegrounds Championship. Looking back, it was a miracle that I held the fi st position amongst the giants of the car world and social media. Thanks to everyone who joined me helping push towards victory!” Going from zero following to taking home the trophy is no small feat, but it just goes to show the tremendous support that Reyes has behind him and his outstanding S2000. We can’t wait to see what kinds of amazing things that support allows you to do in the future. Congratulations, Ger!

The world of drifting has taken a spot in the limelight in recent years. What started as a style-focused underground movement in Japan has graduated to one of the most watched and talked about professional motorsports of all time. The tires became wider, the engines became more powerful, and the athletes more plentiful, but it all started with humble beginnings. With more new guys entering the world of drift than ever before, it’s important for them to acknowledge that the sport didn’t start with 1000-horsepower engines and angle kits, but rather with grassroots pioneers who kept things simple and fun. To get some insight into grassroots drifting and what it takes, I sat down for a chat with a good friend of mine who knows his way around the world of drifting. Mike Martino, an Ontario-based drifter with over a decade of experience, was happy to provide us with some insight into the basics of drift, as well as his own experiences growing up in the midst of an emerging scene.

IN YOUR INITIAL TAGES S OF PURCHASE, YOUR ULTIMA TE INTEREST SHOULD BE IN HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CAR AND WHAT HISTORY IT REALLY BRINGS TO YOU. Hey Mike! As a preface to this interview, can you describe your experience in the industry? How long have you been doing it, and what kind of experience do you have? I’ve been in the car industry in Canada for as long as I can remember. Right from high school, I sort of fell into the car scene as your typical “car guy.” I’ve had more jobs than I can remember involving full time, part time, volunteer and even just advising in the car scene. Drifting became a part of my life around 2004, when there was a huge hype around Japanese drifting in Canada. It sort of just spiraled from there and I had the chance to work with some big names in the community. I’ve run or helped run many different drift series here in Ontario, as well as participated in a ton of state-side events recently, where I’ve gained some incredible friends in the process.
70
PASMAG
What were the first cars that you ever set up to drift? Tell us about them! I started with a very tired S13 and a KA24DE, just like many before me, which later helped me become a good driver, and taught me many late night lessons on how to break something and get stranded somewhere. Describe the process of getting ready for a life of drifting, starting with the purchase decision. In your initial stages of purchase, your ultimate interest should be in how you feel about the car and what history it really brings to you. I grew up in the drifting community on Option videos and your typical outburst of cool old S-chassis drift pics, so it was inevitable I’d end up drifting in an S13 and then onto an S15. When you’re a beginner in the whole atmosphere of drifting, your aspirations are based on what you’ve seen and not what you know.
Everyone in the drifting world knows about S-chassis. What are some underrated or under-utilized platforms out there that you consider promising chassis? Some great chassis, aside from S-chassis, are the Toyota JZX or R-series cars. The JZX90 and JZX100 are becoming very popular in Canada thanks to our import laws, and R32s have been around for ages now. R33s and R34s are also becoming more popular in the Canadian drift scene thanks to the legality of them now. BMW E36 and E46 platforms have also started to become popular because of their affordability. How can grassroots hopefuls be innovative or spend less without sacrificing safety/quality? Are there any specific components of the car that don’t need to be costly? You want to start out simple. When you introduce advanced parts, you have to factor in variables like suspension geometry, over centering, linear spring loads, etc. They can be very overwhelming to someone new to drifting. The best advice anyone can give you is “keep it simple, stupid.” Get a good set of off-the-shelf coilovers that are reputable for your application (For example, Stance or HSD for S-
chassis). Look into a good suspension arm/link package like SPL or PBM toe rods, TC rods, and upper control arms. Get an alignment at a shop that knows how to adjust multi-link. Get a low-kilometer welded or two-way differential and go have fun! All of the above can be cost efficient and fun. ou don’t need a hydro e-brake because all of the cool kids are doing it. In fact, the true grassroot drivers - guys who have been doing it longer than some of these pros - don’t even bother with a lot of overcomplicated things. Why? Because you don’t need it! What kind of safety gear do you need to invest in for yourself and your car? When you’re fi st starting out you can’t skimp on safety. A good helmet is a must. A fire xtinguisher is also a huge must-have. You’re pushing your car to limits it would normally never see on the streets and things can get hot. Very hot. Other than that, I’d suggest long sleeve clothing or a fire retardan suit. God forbid you get trapped in your car upside down while it catches on fire or something. Th suit is going to give you those few extra seconds you may need to save your own life, or someone else’s at least.

TECHNICAL What kind of tires should be used when you’re first starting out? A good, grippy, set of front tires are a must-have for drifting. There’s nothing worse than initiating into a turn and understeering into what could be a wall because of the horrible compound you’ve chosen to trust your life on. Those awesome upgraded brakes you put on your car are pretty much useless if your tires are just going to lock up and slide. For rears, even now, I use the more budget-friendly alternatives like Evergreen or Nankang. Starting out, you ideally want a high tread wear that’s really going to take the heat cycles you’re going to put them through. You don’t want them chunking or delaminating mid-drift. Sizes also play a huge factor because of sidewall fl x. Based on car or wheel sizes, you’re going to want to adjust accordingly. I run a 225/40/18 in the rear on a 9.5-inch wheel. When you’re a more advanced driver (with more power, of course) your high quality tires are going to come into play. Overall, do your research on what’s out there. There have been many advancements in tire compounds at this point, and as much as we’d like to stick to what we know, things change. My favorite front tires were the BFG G-Force KDWs, but they’ve discontinued my typical size, so I’ve been using Nankang NS2Rs at this point. For rears I’ll use anything from a Federal 595 to something cheaper, like an Evergreen EU72.

What is the most common mistake you see people make when setting up their drift cars? Over-building. It’s becoming such a common thing for newcomers to do. The fad that is “American Drifting” has become the end goal for all the wrong reasons. You’ll see a lot of newcomers building a fully-caged tube chassis, aiming for 500+ horsepower, when they have zero or minimal seat time. It really puts you back and essentially handicaps your learning curve because you’ll never know what it’s like to have to take the necessary steps into honing your driving skills versus the car driving you. When do you reach a point where angle kits or more power become things you should look towards? My S13 had just shy of 500 horsepower, a full angle kit, a full cage and every other useless piece of nonsense you can think of in a race car (sans hydro e-brake), and I still drove it on the street here and there.
My S15 has maybe 260 horsepower at the moment, but I have more fun driving my S15 because of its reliability and simplistic abilities than I did my S13. At some point, your driving skill surpasses what your vehicle can do. That point is where you start assessing what direction you can go in next. Do you want more power or do you want more angle? My best advice is go for a moderately higher power range and some suspension upgrades when you’re ready. Aim for 350 to 380 horsepower, buy quality parts, and get some pre-made knuckles like Heatmaker or Driftworks. Guys like Julian (Heatmaker) from Animal Style have tons of experience behind the wheel and have basically perfected what it is to have a grassroots car. Once you’ve got your budget drifter together, what kind of track events should you be looking for? Ones that are fun! Gather a group of friends together and be sociable. Don’t be the “I’m not part of the cool group” guy who tries to make themselves out to be an “I heart h8ers” kind of person. Drifting is about family, friends, and having fun. I’ve connected with people all over the globe now that I would consider to be some of my closest friends, and it was all because of drifting. We’re all here for the same reasons: style, friends, family, and fun.
What’s the easiest/best way to learn to drift? Are there track events that specialize in teaching, or is it all middle-of-the-night horseplay, hoping no one calls the cops? I want to say stay off the stree s, but I learned in industrial areas after 2 A.M. phone calls from friends. That’s not to say we didn’t get in trouble, though. We got into a lot of trouble, some I regret very much, but it taught me lessons. It taught me that an uncontrolled environment can really hinder your ability to learn. You can’t take a second to assess what’s just happened or learn how to adjust it. It’s kind of like a hit-it-and-quitit kind of thing – you drift a bit and get the hell out. At the track, things are controlled and specifically designed for you to advance. Your ability to really push yourself is only limited by your fears and comfort. It’s something you’ll learn to step out of the boundaries of with seat time.
YOU’LL SEE A LOT OF NEWCOMERS BUILDINGA FULLYCAGED TUBE CHASSIS, AIMING FOR 500+ HP, WHEN THEY HAVE ZERO OR MINIMAL SEAT TIME.

What does it take to get comfortable drifting on an open track? Walk us through the motions of getting a feel for the car and track. Determination and seat time is all it takes. Sitting on the grid with your heart pounding and that sinking stomach feeling is one of the most nerve-racking things you can experience before getting on your way. And then you’re off an everything becomes clear. Your focus is on what speed you’re at without even looking at the cluster. You’re monitoring the sounds your car is making, you’ve assessed the condition of your entry, you adjust your hands, head and feet in movements that look like a dance. The next thing you know, you’re moving 160 km/h, initiating into an uphill crested blind turn that you only remember goes left, from a year ago. After that, intuition and muscle memory take over. You start improvising things as well, like in a situation where you may be coming in too hot or too wide. You adjust with left foot braking, clutching in, and a slight e-brake pull. It pulls you outwards, you’ve scrubbed some speed and you need to make it past that inner apex, so you gas it with the clutch in and then release giving you that extra bit of power you needed. Everything happens so quickly as you coast out of that fi st turn, transitioning into the next connecting two, three, four, and even more like a smooth roller coaster.
BEING IN C ONTROL OF A SITUATION IS WAY COOLER THAN THE MISSILE-HYPEDUDE SMASHING HIS PO S INTO THE WALL, DESTROYING THE CAR AND TRACK. Is there a certain type of technique or style you should aim for in your driving? Some people seem really enamored with wall-tapping right off the bat. Why would someone want to bash their car off the wall? That s just nonsense. You’ve worked hard for the vehicle you’re showcasing. Hone your skills and learn proximity without hitting something. Being in control of a situation is way cooler than the missile-hypedude smashing his POS into the wall, destroying the car and track. Drifting is about style - it always has been. Expressive, tasteful driving is what Japan started this with. Would you rather watch a bunch of derby-type cars following each other on a track drifting, or would you rather watch that awesome FC you’ve idolized for a year on Facebook with an incredible livery and well executed/functional fi ment slay the track in tandem with other awesome looking cars not bashing into each other like some king of the hill match? Personally, I’d choose the later.
Do you have any advice for the people who think they need 400+ horsepower to drift? Yeah. Quit now, or reassess your thinking. I started with a very tired S13 and a KA24DE. I drifted with a VLSD at fi st, which I quickly learned was scary and unpredictable. I swapped in a welded diff that a friend welded up for me at the time, and bought some off-the-shelf coilovers. I honed my driving ability into driving the car versus it driving me. I needed to know how to control every inch of where I wanted my rear tires to be on the track and how fast I wanted to be going. Like I said before, you eventually surpass your cars ability. You learn to use what you have. I like to compare it to a spoiled kid who always gets what they want. They’ll never know the true value of working for things like someone who had to build what they had. When you value your own skill as a learning experience, you don’t give up so easily. You don’t just toss it out and move onto the next thing you progress.
If you could go back in time and talk to yourself before you started drifting, what advice would you give yourself? That all those late nights under your car on the side of the road, 200 km away from your shop or house will never end. They will always happen, but what you need to take away from that isn’t the unfortunate situation - it’s the memories you’re making and the friends who are sticking around to help you out. A lot of things can be done on your own in life. Drifting isn’t one of them. Drifting is something you should be experiencing with the people you have the most fun with.
