ISSUE PREVIEW
THE LOW-DOWN
I
N THIS ISSUE OF PASMAG TRUCKS, WE DECIDED TO SHOW SOME LOWERED LOVE. TWO LOW-RIDING TRUCKS ON OUR COVER? That has to be some kind of record. Our main cover truck is Neil Tjin’s F-150 that was slammed over 24s to be a SEMA show-stopper. It definitely stopped us in our tracks, just like his previous F-150, which this truck is a direct sequel to! Read on to know what kind of work went into making this
Ford so down to earth. The other two slammed trucks we have featured come from two very different backgrounds, but result in some seriously great creations. Matt Begley’s C-10 hot rod is what American metal dreams are made of, while the Mad Max Tundra produced by the team at Mobile Toys Inc. is something that would make any desert bandit or war boy proud. The amount of work and detail that went into both deserves to be recognized.
To round out the features here, we needed to bring things back up for at least one, so we enlisted Ernie Manansala’s F-5.11 Raptor. This is a truck that would be at home in a warzone or search and rescue. Equipped to be a haven for service men and women, this tactical Raptor is completely functional for pretty much anything, and looks great doing it. At the front of the book, we’ll discuss some of the newest trucks that the auto show circuit has teased us with for 2019,
and, as always, we have some hot new products for your truck and buyers’ guides for both wheels and tires. Everything to kick off our spring just right, plus more! Thanks for picking us up! Feel free to drop us a note at letters@pasmag.com if you’d like to tell us what we’re doing right, or otherwise.

SHARPER SILVERADO THE NEW SILVERADO’S CHANGES ARE MORE THAN SKIN-DEEP Story by Micky Slinger
Since the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was revealed, public reaction has been pretty split. Some say that the new Silverado is exactly the change that the truck needed, while others despise the new design, complaining on social media about the departure the truck took in the looks department. This departure should make you feel like something is different about the truck, since this Silverado is like nothing else that’s come before it. First off, this 1500 looks more athletic because it’s been on a strict diet and exercise plan. Through the use of aluminum in smaller panels here and
there, plus the hood and the doors, the sharper Silverado has lost 450 pounds over its previous iteration. Additionally, a high grade roll-formed steel was used in the truck’s bed, and seven different types of metals were used in the safety cage inside; changes that added safety and rigidity, as well as some poundage saved. Strength and stiffness arries through to the rest of the fully-boxed ladder-frame body in the form of 80-percent high-strength steel, which results in a 10-percent stiffer body overall. One thing that all Chevy fans have been excited about with this truck is the inclusion of a light-duty diesel engine
option – a Duramax diesel. The new 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel, which will be built out of GM’s Flint, Michigan, assembly plant, will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that’s been co-developed with Ford. Both of the Silverado’s popular previous V8s, the 5.3- and 6.2-liter, will make a return to be part of the six engine and transmission combinations available, as Chevy has specified and will feature cylinder deactivation from one to seven cylinders. To compliment the engine options, Chevy is also offering the Silverado in eight trim levels. From base to loaded they are: Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trailboss, LT, LT Trailboss, RST, LTZ, and High Country. High Country will act as the Silverado’s most luxurious trim level, while the Custom and LT with Trailboss suffixes will be focused more on off-road performance, with larger off-road tires, a two-inch lift, and the suspension from the Z71 truck. The 2019 Silverado 1500 will also be available in regular cab, extended cab, four-door crew cab, and offer the option to go for a short or long bed, which offers an industry first p wer tailgate on appropriate models. After facing
tr. TRENDING
backlash from the previous generation of Silverado – that it wasn’t a large enough departure – Chevy has hit back with this Silverado, and it’s not just to get people talking. Through the use of body sculpting, revised fenders, and positioning of the side mirrors, Chevy’s engineers have said that the new Silverado is seven-percent more aerodynamic. The design team also gave fans a little throwback on the tailgate, with the bolded letters of “Chevrolet” stamped onto it – something that hasn’t appeared on a Silverado since the ‘90s. Chevy still knows where its roots are, even though their newest truck is confident y looking towards the future.
ONE THING THAT ALL CHEVY FANS HAVE BEEN EXCITED ABOUT WITH THIS TRUCK IS THE INCLUSION OF A LIGHT-DUTY DIESEL ENGINE OPTION – A DURAMAX DIESEL

THE RANGER RETURNS WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2019 FORD RANGER
Story by Micky Slinger
From 1983 to 2011, Ford made a great little reliable pickup truck called the Ranger for the North American market. Designed by Ford and based on the Mazda B-Series models of pickups, Rangers were spotted all over, being a great choice for smaller contractors or anyone who needed a pickup for convenience, but also needed something on a smaller scale – that is until the final truck olled off the ord Twin Cities Assembly production line on December 22nd, 2011. For North America, that was the end of our Ranger. For the 2012 model year, Ford Argentina started work on a new international Ranger platform called the T6, which would also share underpinnings with a Mazda once again – another international pickup that we don’t get, the BT-50. The rest of the world would get to enjoy the great T6 Ranger from 2012 to 2017, meanwhile the North American market was starting to realize it missed
having smaller trucks to choose from. With the introduction of the new GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado, Ford decided it was time for a comeback, announcing in 2017 that North America would get its own version of the T6 Ranger as a 2019 model. At 2018’s Detroit Auto Show, we all fina ly got a taste of what the 2019 Ford Ranger will look like and what kinds of features we can expect to see. Powertrain is actually the same as the 2018 EcoBoost Mustang, with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. Based on the 2018 Mustang’s specs, we could expect some power ratings around 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque from the new Ranger. We can also expect the Ranger to be offered in both RWD and 4WD models, and as such, will have Ford’s usual FX2 and FX4 off-road packages for options. Based on theT6 chassis’ ladder frame, solid rear axle
with leaf springs, and double wishbone independent front suspension, capabilities are further bolstered by Dana Trac-Lok differentials that electronically lock the rear, and a low-range-equipped transfer case. An FX2 or FX4 Off-Road package adds skid plates, shocks tuned for off-road use, and all-terrain tires. The new Ranger also houses some interesting traction systems, like the Terrain Management System, similar to the F-150 Raptor’s, with driving modes for Normal, Grass, Gravel and Snow, Mud and Ruts, and Sand, as well as the Trail Control, which allows a speed to be set
during hill descent by the driver, who steers while the Ranger takes care of acceleration and braking – kind of like off-road cruise control. The XL trim level will be the base trim, with an XLT and Lariat being upper trims to choose from, allowing optioning of either Chrome or Sport appearance packages. All trims can be had in either half-rear-door SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew variants. With production beginning in Michigan in late 2018, it should be just a few more months before we see the Ranger make its triumphant return to the roads.
BASED ON THE 2018 MUSTANG’S SPECS, WE COULD EXPECT SOME POWER RATINGS AROUND 310 HORSEPOWER AND 350 LB-FT OF TORQUE FROM THE NEW RANGER.
RANGER RAPTOR
A Raptor version of the Ford Ranger was recently teased to an audience in Thailand, which means we may or may not get it, and if we do, it could be pretty different. The truck that Ford showed off is noticeably bigger in every respect, getting a wider and higher stance that’s perfect for off-roading. The Ranger Raptor also features a 2.0-liter inline-four twin-turbo diesel engine, a 10-speed auto gearbox, Fox Racing Shox dampers, all-terrain tires, dent-resistant composite fenders, and the F-150 Raptor’s off-road systems. We don’t know about you guys, but we’d love a mini Raptor!

CROSSING OVER WITHOUT CROSSHAIRS 2019’S RAM 1500 IS VERY IMPRESSIVE Story by Micky Slinger
Ram trucks have fina ly made the big jump in design to separate themselves from the rest of the Dodge brand. As a selling superpower, why shouldn’t they have their own branch within the umbrella? With 2019’s iteration of the Ram 1500, we see the crosshair grille design that the trucks have carried since the dawn of time give way to a more sophisticated aerodynamic grille, and it looks amazing! Speaking of aero, there’s quite a bit going on with the new Ram. The new grille features active shutters, and the front splitter underneath the chrome bumper will lower 2.5 inches around speeds of 35 miles per hour. If you tick the box for the air spring suspension for the Off-Road package, you do lose the splitter, but the air system will pick up the slack by lowering the truck just over half an inch instead. The new sculpted bedsides and hood also improve airflow over the new 1500, all in the name of efficie y. This is a completely reengineered Ram, from the ground up. A brand-new
lighter and stronger high-strength steel chassis boasts a weight loss of about 100 pounds – and that’s before we talk about the aluminum weight savings of the tailgate, steering unit, engine mounts, transmission crossmembers, and front suspension. The powerplants will stay the same, so you can still have your 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 or 5.7-liter Hemi V8, however, these Rams will feature a little boost from a hybrid system that FCA is calling “eTorque.” In place of the alternator, a generator unit charges a 48-volt battery pack, which provides smoother start/stops and an additional kick of torque (an extra 90 lb-ft for the V6 and 130 lb-ft for the Hemi). The battery pack can also be recharged by way of regenerative braking. Inside, the Ram has enjoyed a much-needed overhaul. Most of the photos you see floating around are of the upper trim levels (Laramie, Longhorn, and Limited), which feature a gorgeous and heavily redesigned leather interior with a monstrous 12-inch touchscreen media interface right in the middle. The 12-inch models will come
SPEAKING OF AERO, THERE’S QUITE A BIT GOING ON WITH THE NEW RAM. THE NEW GRILLE FEATURES ACTIVE SHUTTERS, AND THE FRONT SPLITTER UNDERNEATH THE CHROME BUMPER WILL LOWER 2.5 INCHES AROUND SPEEDS OF 35 MILES PER HOUR with FCA’s new Uconnect 4 system, and the same is true for the smaller 8.4-inch unit found in the Big Horn, Laramie, and Rebel trims. With Uconnect 4, the Ram gains both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while an older Uconnect 3 system on a 5-inch screen is available for those who aren’t fussed on the Tradesman, HFE, Big Horn, and Rebel iterations. What are the most important specs to a Ram enthusiast? The tow fi ures, of course! The 2018 truck boasts a payload of 1,880 pounds and can tow a rated 10,620 pounds, which is further improved by the 2019 model to 2,320
pounds of payload and 12,750 pounds of trailer. These improved numbers are provided to us via a V8-equipped Ram 1500 with the “Max Tow Package” option selected, which can only be equipped to the RWD V8 with 3.92:1 final dri e ratio (3.21 and 3.55 also available). If a four-wheel-drive model is more your cup of tea, the highest ratings are 1,950 payload pounds and 11,460 pounds of towage. These boosted numbers are thanks to the added kick of eTorque, which has unexpectedly made us very excited about the future of hybrid technology in trucks.

Close enough. You hear the snarl of a throaty exhaust fi st, and then a deafening crash follows as a Ford Raptor smashes through a wall like the Kool-Aid Man. Instead of an “Oh yeah!” announcement, a barrage of covering fire pou s out of the windows, allowing you to run into the truck and grab a sidearm out of the holsters on the inside of the door to secure your escape. At least, that’s how I pictured it being used when I saw the F-5.11 Raptor for the fi st time. “Tactical” is pretty much the fi st word that comes to mind when you look at it. How could you not think it? With a no-nonsense color combo of blacks and grays of different shades and textures, custom bumpers and fenders,

a livery design that’s based on a topographical map, and individually numbered tactical cases mounted around the bed, it’s easy to see. 5.11 Tactical’s (where the truck gets its namesake) motto of “Always Be Ready” is also featured on the sides, and is something that the team who built the Raptor followed throughout the process. The birth of the F-5.11 Raptor was thanks to a combination of situations put together by the truck’s owner, Ernie Manansala Jr. of Kolab Agency, with the crucial support of up and coming overland equipment distributor, Overland911.com. Through Kolab, Manansala had one client, Volant Performance, who wanted an amazing vehicle to occupy some of their booth space at SEMA, while another client, 5.11 Tactical, wanted their foot and product in the door at the big show. Combining these two wishes and taking the idea to the talented team at Phrenetic Concept Studios to completely design the truck via 3D rendering, Manansala then approached Streetwise Motorsports, specialists in anything with dirty tires, to bring this truck to life. To start off, however, the team had to face their biggest roadblock.
“TACTICAL” IS PRETTY MUCH THE FIRST WORD THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT.

“WE WANTED TO BUILD SOMETHING THAT SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD WOULD BE PROUD TO UTILIZE.”
“The biggest challenge that we had to overcome was something that no one could find, a ord, or purchase: time,” says a wise Manansala. “It was just the time. Had we had more time, we defini ely would’ve been able to execute a lot more. Everyone on this team was just so capable.” The amount of time they had to piece together a badass truck fit or the SEMA show floor? our weeks flat. So, right when the go their hands on the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor, they started tearing it apart and cutting up the front and rear bumpers for some custom additions. The roof rack, side steps, and front and rear bumpers were designed in CAD by Streetwise

Motorsports, and then cut with a Torchmate CNC plasma cutter and welded together to take their fina shape. The aforementioned rear bumper now features a full fift wheel and 5.11’s heavy breaching kit – you know, just in case. Anderson Composites carbon fibe front fenders have also been added to keep the theme of aggression going. A combination of Rotiform CCV Off-Road wheels and Cooper Discoverer STT tires are the sturdy feet that carry the Raptor on many an adventure, while Icon Vehicle Dynamics shocks, springs, and front delta joints are the capable legs. Behind the wheels sit silver Sparta Evolution big brake kits, all
around. Providing the low roar of the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 is a tandem effort between the Volant Performance exhaust system, which is doused in Jet-Hot Performance exhaust coating for longevity, and a Volant PowerCore air intake. “Personally, I’m attached to this truck because of my upbringing,” Manansala explains. “I grew up in a small town and my best friends and I pretty much grew up in the woods. Trucks always surrounded my lifestyle. My friends went on to serve in the military and work in firehouses and police stations and so on. We wanted to build something that service men and women all over the world would be proud to utilize.”

This is a theme that carries flawlessly in o the interior of the F-5.11, where a service man or woman would be very comfortable. Katzkin Leather reupholstering takes place on all seats in the Raptor, while MOLLE panels on the insides of the doors provide a nice hanging place for ready bags and holsters filled with med pac s, flashligh s, handguns, and other gear for situational usefulness. Up front, an AEM CD-7 HUD display feeds and logs data for the driver, and is mounted over the Raptor’s dash that has been customized by the team at Streetwise Motorsports. “This project went above and beyond, but could potentially be something that could be the norm in fi e to 10 years,” Manansala says. “It looks flash , but a lot of people don’t realize how functional it really is. You have to understand the situations that you face in the field, whether it s offroad or asphalt. Our truck is fully capable of just about anything." A combination of situations combined to produce a truck that could handle any situation. The F-5.11 Raptor brings a new meaning to “stay frosty” by being the coolest tactical truck out there.

IT’S CALLED A TUNDRA, BUT IT’S EQUIPPED FOR THE WA S T E L A N D Story by
Micky Slinger Landon Pharr & Matt Schaffer
Photography by
Sure, you’ve shot around a couple ideas about what kind of vehicle you’d use in an apocalypse scenario, but have you ever built it? Whether it’s to bash through zombies or rip around the desert in search of fuel and water, everyone has a specific, hardy dream machine to get them through the toughest of hypothetical situations. As it turns out, there are some people out there who actually put those doomsday plans in motion.
inspired by a certain outbackmarauding 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT “V8 Interceptor,” Hoang Le, obviously a very big fan of Mad Max, wanted to bring his desert punk visions to life. Wisely, he chose to bring his base for modification to the talented hands of Chris Pate and crew at Mobile Toys Inc., in College Station, Texas. “The goal was to build a themed vehicle based on the visuals of the original Mad Max movie car,” Pate explains. “The 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT ‘Interceptor’ had a low stance with a dusty black exterior finish. We wanted our build to give that feel of apocalyptic times.” The basis for Le’s apocalypse machine is a 2010 Toyota Tundra SR5, which is some ways o° from a Ford Falcon in many areas, except for one crucial section: under the hood. Le’s Tundra packs Toyota’s reliable 5.7-liter 3UR-FE V8, and this one is supercharged.
HEAVILY
Toyota o° ered something really unique with this generation of Tundra in the form of a bunch of performance-enhancing TRD goodies, and somehow, they snuck a supercharger for their V8-equipped trucks past the Department of Transportation. If you’ll remember, Max’s Falcon had a large supercharger tacked on top, which is of the roots variety, the same style TRD opted for with their Tundra kit. Where it counts, at heart, the Falcon and the Tundra are brothers; the rest was about to be transformed. You can’t just take a stock body truck out into the wasteland – at least make it look more like a tank first! Glassworks Baja-style widebody fenders and a RKSport vented carbon fiber hood bulk up the truck on the sides and up front, while the Demello O° -Road front winch bumper, with Smittybilt XRC winch and Squadron-R Pro LED pods integrated, and Fab Fours Premium rear bumper adding to the rugged

and o˜ -road-ready appearance of the now beefed-up Tundra. To achieve the blackened and dusty look that the Falcon has, Pate turned to Starwood Motors, who are specialists in Kevlar coatings. These coatings are like spraying a bed liner on the whole exterior of your vehicle, providing protection from bumps and scrapes, as well as UV light, and can be had in many di˜ erent colors to lend to any look. For the Mad Max Tundra, only a textured black finish would do. The other goal of a low-slung stance was made a reality with the help of Branded customs, who built the four-link rear suspension framework for a custom air suspension system with Accuair e-Level management. The result is a tank-like Tundra that airs out over some contrasting orange 22x12 American Force Burnout SS8 wheels – something that any desert bandit would double-take at. “Not many people have built a lowered, bagged, wide-bodied, and Kevlar-coated Tundra - actually, no one to our knowledge,” exclaims Pate. “We wanted to build something no one else had done before.” As anyone who’s familiar with Mobile Toys’ builds knows, the Tun-

dra’s uniqueness factor continues inside the truck as well. With a very established partnership with Orca Designs, purveyors of Illusion Audio, Mosconi, and Raven Designs, among many other well-respected brands, Mobile Toys has taken the interior, as well as a section of the exterior to show o˜ their creativity with Orca product. “The truck’s audio system was built as a demo vehicle for the central region of Orca Designs,” Pate says. “We designed and executed a system that would image well and create a three-dimensional soundstage. We also wanted to have a vehicle that was loud and one of kind.” Taking up the space that a middle rear seat would usually sit
in, a massive black leather enclosure console has been erected, and on either side, a leather racing seat now sits. In the console, a Mosconi 8to12 Aerospace processor is embedded in the top and partially covered by a custom “Mad Max Tundra” nameplate, while the sides are flanked by six One Series amplifiers – three 130.4s on one side, and two 1000.1ds and a 250.2 on the other – all illuminated by white LED accent lighting. Speaker-wise, three dashmounted Illusion Audio C3CX coincidence drivers and four door-residing C8 mid-bass drivers make up the front stage, while the rear is composed of another two C3CXs and a pair of C6 mid-bass drivers. Also taking up residence in the back, right behind the rear racing seats, are four Raven Designs XL 12-inch subwoofers to bring the noise. That noise is carried outside of the Tundra as well. In the truck’s bed is a custombuilt bed rack with an integrated fifth wheel carrier, complete with an additional American Force Burnout SS8 wheel and some Smittybilt fuel canisters, where a set of four outward-facing C6 mid-bass drivers have been mounted, two per side, to the rack. All that’s missing from the back of this Tundra is a guy playing a guitar with a flamethrower attached to the neck. The Mad Max Tundra made its debut at Knowledgefest 2017 and has been on a tear ever since, with the end goal being a SEMA appearance in 2018. If the apocalypse hits while the Tundra is in Vegas, we know which truck we’re running to if we want to make it out alive!

Orion Car Audio saw that there was a slight fall in attendance, as well as serious lack of bump, at SPL competitions that they attended. As a company that cut their teeth in SPL, trying to be as loud as possible, this was disheartening to say the least. Orion saw only one solution to the problem: raise an army! the course of two years, the Orion crew scouted some key players in the SPL competition scene that were running Orion audio gear and started to support them with new product to enhance their competition performance even further. When the time was right, Orion brought its chosen few together and formed the Orion Army. Flying under the company’s banner of “Proud to be Loud,” the team has since accomplished many competition wins, as well as some world records. “Our most noteworthy accomplishment is the fact that we are bringing

more people back to the shows and competitions than there were before we started this movement,” Edgar Cedeno, General Manager of Orion Car Audio, proudly says. “Now, there’s a turnout to see the team compete, which helps all the shows we go to. It feels like SPL competition is coming back to the powerhouse it was back in its early stages.” Here, we’ve highlighted only a few members of the Orion Army. With the 2018 season coming into full swing, be sure to look out for new builds with new Orion product setting new records!

You know when your name is associated with an OEM brand, you’re doing something extremely right in the car world. Each year, while we battle through the crowds of SEMA, past the people in scooters who don’t need them and kids with cameras pretending to be media, there’s always the most amount of congestion around Ford’s show floor p esence, and this is where we see a name that’s expected at this point: Tjin Edition.

an elevated position above the Las Vegas Convention Center’s Central Hall, plus some impressive vehicles from the brand’s history, motorsports partners, and sometimes new concepts are defini ely attention-grabbers, one whole side of Ford’s “booth space” is dedicated to custom vehicles that they’ve teamed up with custom car builders to create. For the modified ehicle enthusiast, this aspirational level of building is where the draw is, and Tjin Edition vehicles have been a major staple for over seven years of Ford’s SEMA appearances.
WHILE
Previously, Neil Tjin, the mastermind behind Tjin Edition, built a 2012 F-150 for Ford at SEMA. In custom gunmetal gray paint and rolling on Rotiform DIAs, back when they had six holes and were nicknamed “six-shooters,” the popular contractor truck sat mere millimeters from the ground when completely aired out. To achieve the insane stance, Tjin said it took the team at Unique Fabrication about 350 hours to fabricate the body of the truck, plus move components under the body further up, and even cut up the rear frame tubing. This all allowed the F-150 to air out over its preposterous 24x12-inch wheels without damaging or crushing anything on the truck. As you can imagine, this F-150 was a crowd favorite. Tjin must’ve been feeling nostalgic because this year’s project for Ford is all too familiar.

“WE WANTED TO DO THE 2018 F-150 TO FOLLOW UP ON OUR VERY SUCCESSFUL 2012 F-150 THAT WE DID FOR FORD.” As a crew that has been designing and building vehicles since ’96, with over 100 builds to their name, applying for a SEMA build through an OEM is standard fare for the Tjin Edition team. Successfully winning the bid to build another F-150 through Ford for SEMA 2017, this time with a brand-new 2018 model, Tjin already had a plan well in hand.
“We presented this platform to Ford for the 2017 SEMA show, and we were selected out of hundreds of proposals,” he says. “We wanted to do the 2018 F-150 to follow up on our very successful 2012 F-150 that we did for Ford. This time though, we wanted to go with a V8 supercharged setup.” That’s right, Tjin Edition got their hands on a 5.0-liter V8 example of the F-150 to slam to the ground, and the aforementioned supercharger comes by way of a very important build partner, especially when it comes to Fords: Roush. All-in, the Roush supercharger package (the fi st produced for the 2018 F-150) includes the blower, intercooler, hoses and piping, blow-off alve, wastegate, air intake,
throttle body, intake manifold, as well as an upgraded fuel system. You literally don’t need anything else. For 2018, the F-150’s Coyote engine received a 10-horsepower bump over the 2017 model year to 395 horsepower, and this figure is further boosted by the Roush supercharger to an astounding ballpark of 650 horses! “Like with any SEMA builds, there are always challenges, but thankfully we have a great and experienced team behind us,” Tjin says, knowingly. “The biggest challenge was that this was a brand-new truck, a 2018 model, so everything was new. Installing the fi st Roush Supercharger for the 2018 F-150 had its challenges, but the crew at RPG Off oad and Roush got it done, and this baby drove into the Ford booth at the SEMA show!” To get the F-150 rolling just right onto the show floo , there were a few more challenges that needed to be tackled; like fitting those 24x11-inch three-piece

Rotiform HUR wheels that would end up tucking up front and sitting lip to fender in the rear. Thankfully, Unique Fabrication, a constant build partner on Tjin Edition projects, was more than up to the task – especially since the labor put in would be 150 hours less than the last F-150. That being said, the work that needed to be done was no small undertaking. The stock fenders were chopped up and reworked to accommodate their new Rotiform and Falken 305/35 roommates, and the brand-new Air Lift system was rebuilt to work with fabricated brackets, hardware, and completely custom suspension arms. The frame was even notched in the rear and slightly customized in the front to get this truck further acquainted with the floo . The one-off ork doesn’t stop there either. Tucked underneath the F-150 is a customized Ford Performance exhaust that exits under the truck’s bed, between the frame rails, instead of having a tip sticking out that could get caught on speedbumps or elevated sewer grates, or something sticking out of the roll pan that could ruin the clean look of the truck. Also nestled below in a stealthy install are twin Viair compressors feeding into an air tank – something that could only
be pulled off sa ely in a place like California, where winter is a myth. Even the Rotiform HURs were ordered heavily custom, needing to fit an application that hadn’ been measured up yet and having to make room for the massive six-piston Baer Grizzly BBK that have taken up residence behind the wheels’ matte bronze faces. “We had to work closely with Baer to make sure the brakes worked, Rotiform and Falken to build the exact size wheels and tires, and closely with the teams at Unique Fabrication and Air Lift, since this was the fi st 2018 F-150 slammed on air suspension,” Tjin
“THE FRAME WAS EVEN NOTCHED IN THE REAR AND SLIGHTLY CUSTOMIZED IN THE FRONT TO GET THIS TRUCK FURTHER ACQUAINTED WITH THE FLOOR.”

lists off. “Just like with any custom car, we didn’t know this would work until we hit the button on the Air Lift controller and watched the F-150 slam to the ground!” Custom touches continue in the appearance department as well, with a three-stage coating of custom beige from Axalta on the outside, while a combo of orange and black leather from Katzkin reupholsters the seats inside. As Tjin Edition is a family affair, these choices were made by Tjin’s children, Collin and Kylie, who are apparently up and coming car builders and designers if their taste is a forecast of what’s to come. And after the F-150 has served its SEMA duty and joined the Tjin Edition RoadShow’s tour lineup, it’ll enjoy some retirement as a daily driver for the family. If you live in California, you could potentially see this truck grabbing groceries or going to basketball practice. “There are always ups and downs, with tight time frames, but if you plan accordingly, work with the right partners, and stay focused on the task at hand, anything is possible,” says Tjin, wisely. “Having a great team and family behind you makes it all
worthwhile! This is a family business for us, and we try to inspire others, like we were inspired when we fi st started.” With a winning mindset like that, it’s no wonder that Tjin Edition is so associated with big builds at SEMA. Standing out, physically below the stereotypical lifted trucks of the show, the slammed F-150 inspires current and future car builders to build their own way, in a tasteful direction, while cooperating with your automotive family. Coincidentally, that’s pretty down to earth.

When you make your way through any car show these days, it’s a lot of the same; widebody, flas y wheels, air suspension – don’t pop the hood. After a while of seeing trailered wheel fi ments and slapped on FRP lumps, it starts to numb the senses a little bit, which makes it all that much more special when you can cut that bitterness with something sweet. In this case, I’m talking about Matt Begley’s Chevy C-10 hot rod.

When Begley fi st introduced his truck to the public, it had an as-is attitude on the outside. To Begley, a wrap is just a sandwich alternative; rocking a mix of bare metal and original patina was just right on this ’67 C-10. If you’re looking for some dress-up, you could

peek into the engine bay (you can whenever you want since there’s no hood to speak of) to scope out a Chevy LQ9 V8, trimmed out in gold, with a monstrous exit-piped single turbo bolted on the side. Slammed to the ground and rolling around h2oi in 2015, the truck caught international appeal from tons of media coverage. We’re not here to talk about that iteration though, so let’s take a look at how the Chevy sits now.

First, let’s have a moment of silence for the turbo LS. The stock internals of the LQ4 weren’t so happy with the 88-mm turbo stressing them out and eventually ended up spinning a rod bearing. Instead of rebuilding, Begley decided to go for a do-over with a similar engine that ups the ante. Taking place of the LQ4 is an LQ9 engine, differentiated by a flat pis on over the LQ4’s dished version, which increases compression and base horsepower from the 6.0-liter V8. Fun fact: the LQ9 was used in Cadillac Escalades from 2002 to 2006, so, technically, Begley’s C-10’s new powerplant is a little more bougie as well. While the new LS isn’t turbocharged just yet, Begley wasn’t taking chances again,
“BEGLEY DECIDED TO GO FOR A DO-OVER WITH A SIMILAR ENGINE THAT UPS THE ANTE.” so he laid a solid foundation for incoming boost. “This time around, I built up the bottom end with forged internals to withstand a lot more boost and a lot more power than
the stock LQ4,” Begley explains. “I haven’t had a chance to get the twin-turbo setup I’m planning on running on the truck just yet, but it is set up for twin turbos and is capable of 1,500 horsepower.”

I’ll just let the imagery of a dumped twin-turbo ’67 C-10 rocketing down the road make you smile for a second there. And yes, you read the number 1,500 right. To achieve an engine build equipped for such potency, Begley teamed up with some trusted names in the business. A Tick Performance stage three turbo camshaft leaves the Manley valves open a little longer, while Wiseco pistons and rings and Eagle connecting rods pump away to the beat of the deep, lumpy idle. An important build partner in making the LQ9 run at its best was the LS mastermind team at Holley Performance. The C-10’s engine inhales via their throttle body and mid-rise intake manifold, and is fed juice and spark by way of a full fuel system made up of Holley’s Dominator fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel rail, and 160-lb injectors, as well as their
“TO ACHIEVE AN ENGINE BUILD EQUIPPED FOR SUCH POTENCY, BEGLEY TEAMED UP WITH SOME TRUSTED NAMES IN THE BUSINESS.” timing control paired with an MSD ignition system. This is all overseen by an HP standalone ECU, which allows for an AFR that results in the 600 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque the NA engine currently puts to the ground. Speaking of which, power isn’t the only thing this truck puts to the ground. With the touch of a button, Begley can lay frame thanks to his
Airlift Performance air suspension system. To help get this 50-plus-year-old truck become grounded, Begley enlisted some Michigan Metal Works front control arms, complete with better ball joint angles, and even completely rebuilt the rear suspension to a four-link setup at his hot rod shop: Renegade Hot Rods. This is also where Begley chopped middle and rear sections of the frame to convert the once longboxed truck to a short-box version and did every bit of wrench turning on his Chevy. Now, the C-10’s freshly-painted golden body (sans patina’d roof, pillars, and bumpers) airs out over a classic combination of 15-inch Cragar Smoothies wrapped up in Firestone white wall tires from Coker.

ESSENTIALS The golden theme creeps in from the outside and into the interior, with a gold steering wheel out of a ’59 Impala taking position front and center. From the 1980 C-10 suede diamondstitched bench seat, Begley can shift with a Pabst Blue Ribbon ball shift knob and just cruise, arm out the window, in proper hot rod style. While building hot rods out of his own shop may be a sign that Begley isn’t new to this, I’d be remiss not to point out that his very fi st build, a body-dropped and bagged S-10, which he built the whole frame for, was built by him when he was only 16 years old. To be fair, he’s been influenced from an early age. “My father, Ed Begley, has been my biggest influence and pe son I’ve looked up to my entire life,” Begley says. “I’ve been into cars and building them since I was born because of him. I have always wanted to build a C-10,

since childhood. I waited until I was able to afford it, but started even when I couldn’t afford it.” At just 25 now, and producing projects like this, I think we have many more years of examples
of mixing old and new elements together to make something truly golden from him. Until then, catch his C-10 standing out from the crowd and inspiring a new generation of hot-rodders.
