FOUR YEARS AGO, I HONESTLY THOUGHT THAT THE WIDEBODY TREND WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY FIZZLED OUT, BUT HERE I AM, BACK FOR PASMAG’S FOURTH INSTALLMENT OF THE STYLE BOOK, WHERE WIDE HIPS ON CARS ARE STILL TAKING CENTER STAGE. NOT TO SAY THAT THE GAME HASN’T CHANGED. YOU GUYS AND THIS SCENE ARE ALWAYS SURPRISING US. ince the V1s of Rocket Bunny and Liberty Walk arrived on the shores of North America, Kei Miura has been pumping out designs, increasing in width and complexity with each year. It’s no secret that they’ve become more and more popular among enthusiasts, and so to standout, enthusiasts are reaching for the more exclusive kits, or even kit-bashing different kit bits to create their own look altogether. Our two feature vehicles are great evidence of this. On the cover is Peter Pang’s Nissan R35 GT-R donning BenSopra’s rare widebody. Yes, the one with the tilt-up cowl hood. With the right pieces on the car swapped out and updated where needed, we think (and we may be a little biased here) that this is the best that this kit has ever been pulled off. Doesn’t that shade of red look like it was made for the kit on this car?

Also wearing red is Drew Evans’ Infiniti G37 S, but this is more of a Martian shade, as his fascination with space is a driving factor behind his build. Evans is an enthusiast who wanted to standout, and with no sedan widebody options, he made Liberty Walk’s coupe kit work with some talented fabrication. The G37 is tied together with choice parts, inside and out. Speaking of which, if you’re after your own selection of choice parts, we just so happened to have stocked our buyers guides with them! Car care, exterior and interior additions, suspension, lighting, wheels, and tires are all present and accounted for. Get your wish lists ready. We have reason to believe that Drew Evans was one of those kids that saved big cardboard boxes for the sole reason of making them into make-believe spaceships. Exploring the great unknown is something that remained with Evans as he grew up, adding a fascination of constellations to his repertoire, and upgrading his spaceships from corrugated to Japanese metal – exclusive to the Nissan family tree.

1996 Altima SE would be the start to Evans’ manufacturer loyalty, which would then lead to an Infiniti G35 Coupe an Armada, an FX50S, and finall the stellar 2013 G37 XS Sedan we’re focusing on today. A littleknown fact about the G is that it was originally Evans’ wife’s car. With the exciting news that a third little one was on the way, Evans took over the G from his wife and sold the FX50 to buy a QX60 as their new family vehicle. In a way, we have Evans’ youngest to thank for us being able to enjoy this car in the fi st place.

MARS AT TA C K S “I wanted to be unique, one-off, and one of a kind,” Evans says about his build direction. “I wanted a build that represented my vision, my theme, from bumper to bumper, inside and outside. I have always been JDM enthused, and always will be.” Immediately after snagging the once-white G37, Evans decked out the car with some basic bolt-ons to help him better enjoy the ride and score some points at a few shows he planned to attend. After acquiring “Best Infiniti” hardware at some e ents in 2014, the taste of competition proved to be a little too sweet for Evans to resist, and so he decided to go “full throttle – pun intended” (his words, not mine) on a fully-built car that would hit every checkbox on a score sheet, but with that one-off twist Now, we should probably address the widebody in the room. If you were thinking it, you’re right; they never made a Liberty Walk kit for the G37 sedan body style, only the coupe. So, how are you seeing what you’re seeing now? The answer is through lots of effort and fabrication work. The kit you see is the LB kit for the coupe, but modified o fit vans’ sedan. “When I went to APAC to discuss the one-off Liberty alk sedan idea, it was farfetched and a job that had never been done before.” Evans explains. “Hacking up the body of the car, and a brand-new Liberty Walk coupe kit from Japan had me sweating a bit; not to mention costs involved.”

Thankfully, the capable hands at APAC (Auto Performance Aesthetics Center) were able to reform the fenders to sedan length and mold them to the body to fill the gap without Evans or his wallet having a stroke, as well as pair the widebody with a Carbon Signal diffuse and rocker skirts, Successful Automotive Bella duckbill trunk, and even NACA hood vents from a GT-R. red from BASF (Carizza Candy Ruby Red Metallic, if you’re curious) on this G are evocative of a certain Infiniti with G -R characteristics that never saw the light of day, and that’s exactly what Evans was shooting for. “Infiniti was due o release a Q50 Eau Rouge back in 2014,” he recalls. “At that time, I was very light on the build of the G, and had every intention of being an owner of one of these four-door beasts when they went to production.

I was absolutely in love with the concept; an AWD sedan from Infiniti housing the 3.8-li er, twin-turbocharged V6 from the GT-R. When that fell through and was scrapped, that’s when the G build went full steam ahead.” The G37 is an X model, so it already has Nissan’s ATTESA AWD system, but Evans would need a bump in power to bridge the gap between the Eau Rouge’s 560 horsepower VR38 and his stock VQ37 pushing 328 horses. Luckily,

Stillen offers a Vortech V3 supercharger kit that could increase his output significantly with th help of a custom tune from R/T Tuning. After being tuned and dyno tested, Evans’ G was putting out 451 wheel-horsepower in RWD and 422 all-wheel-horsepower in AWD, which he can switch between via a custom VDC switch on his dash. Does Evans say “making the jump to light speed” every time he punches it? We sure hope so. Of course, any sort of spacecraft (especially an upgraded one) needs the appropriate landing gear to bring it back down to Earth every now and then. Evans sprung for the good stuff. Work S1 threepiece wheels, in 19x10.5 front and 19x12 rear, are wrapped just right with Toyo’s R888 tires in a meaty 295/30 and 325/30, front and rear, respectively. Providing the perfect amount of liftoff and ouchdown is AirREX’s fully-digital air suspension system. In tandem with SPC camber arms and some custom fabrication done to the front strut towers for more low, the G37’s fenders sit perfectly.

No one likes lifting their hood to a rat’s nest, especially a judge who’s ticking off a score sheet. With less attention being shown to what’s under the hoods at some shows these days, shaving engine bays and tucking wires away seems to have become something that’s slowly being forgotten, so we thought it would be best to revisit the topic.

“The third level, you go all out redoing the engine wiring, hiding stuff in the fender and front bumper, and basically shrinking everything down until you only see the engine.”

“When starting the job, the fi st thing to do is to remove everything, even the engine, so you can take your car to the body shop to fill al unwanted holes, make everything smooth, and paint the engine bay,” Bernard says. You could even do the bay yourself, if you’ve got the skills and tools. You’ll want to fi st sand down the engine bay down to its bare essentials, stripping down paint and sealants. The unsightly holes left over and not being used to run anything important through will have to be welded and filled in Once you’re happy, prep for paint as you would usually. “Use that time to prep the engine with chrome, polished, powdercoated, or painted parts, so your engine will be ready to drop in when you receive the car back from the body shop,” Jean-Francois advises. “Take your time putting the engine bay back in place, since you have a fresh paint job!” Since you’re already down and dirty in paint prep, you may just want to paint your whole car while you’re at it. Having your engine out of your car isn’t as easy as taking off our front bumper, so take advantage while you have the chance! “Once your engine is back in place, determine where you want all your wiring to pass,” says Bernard. “This part can be tricky, since you don't want to see any wiring, but it’s necessary to have it to run your engine. You will probably need to extend, cut, and remove some wire to make them pass exactly where you want.”

With the wiring done, something that Jean-Francois lists as the most challenging part, the next step towards shave-and-tuckdom is to put back or relocate the accessories you do want, and delete the ones you don’t. Just realize what you’re getting yourself into when you delete A/C or power steering – weigh those comfort points versus scene points. “You will need to create parts, but don't be afraid to try new things and push your limits,” Bernard explains. “I’ve personally been at multiple dead ends when shaving and tucking an engine bay, but brainstorming with friends and always trying to be innovative is the key.” If fabrication isn’t your thing, or you just don’t have the means, many companies have emerged in recent years to provide accessory bottles, mounts, brackets, and even whole wiring harnesses to help you get the most out of your shave and tuck job. Rywire and Chase Bays would be some great places to start. Bernard’s most recommended additions to a fresh shave and tuck are flat-head flush mount fender washers; colorcoordinated for bonus points. “You can also add some creativity to your work by adding some spiked nuts or carbon fibe accents, but don't add too much a shaved bay should look simple,” he says. It can take some serious hard work and ingenuity, but if a clean and simple engine bay is your goal, a shave and tuck could do your build a world of good. Hopefully, if you were thinking about it, this gives you the extra push to bring your bay to the next level. We’ll leave you with a few words of wisdom from Bernard. “It's a long process to shave and tuck, but if you take your time and do it right, the result will be amazing and your car will be the center of attention.”

Sometimes you need to let go of something to get ahold of something better, or maybe even something you wanted all along. In Peter Pang’s case, this couldn’t be more true or unexpected. This is the man who built an already amazing R35 GT-R, reluctantly sold it, and then turned around and started building another, arguably better one, right away. The product of project GT-R 2.0 is the incredible car you see here now.

with deep pockets, who followed up with Pang after one of their show appearances to discuss buying the car outright. Initially, Pang was hesitant to let his pride and joy go, but the amount he was offered made it hard to say no. We’re not saying it was Dr. Evil amounts of money, but the cash was good enough to buy Godzilla.

“I was very fortunate that someone was willing to offer a really good price on the white one,” explains Pang. “I wasn’t looking to sell, so when he gave me the money, I knew I had to build another one. I needed to build another car.” If the name and the car weren’t already ringing any bells, we

should also mention that Pang is the owner of Nextmod, which has since become renowned for pumping out some of the most standout widebody cars with quality parts in Canada, and even in some areas south of the border. So much so, that the name “Nextmod” was recognizable to the fine people over at BenSopra. With the

wealth of widebody kits out there for the Nissan GT-R though, why did Pang gravitate towards BenSopra fi st with his second GT-R? Honestly, it was the kit he wanted in the fi st place. “The BenSopra is the kit that I actually like, but the price was just too hard to justify,” says Pang, beaming at his car. “I got an opportunity to get a really good price on it, so I jumped on it. The Liberty Walk car had the right timing, but this car is the one that I’m building for myself.” BenSopra is a Japanese aero company that seems like it’s been around forever in the JDM scene, yet has only had their doors open since 2011. So far, BenSopra offers a kit for the R35 GT-R, Lamborghini Gallardo, and Nissan 350Z, but only advertises the fi st two on their website, which pleasantly plays Time to Say Goodbye by Andrea Bocelli as soon as you open it. Pure class. Their kit for the GT-R is heavily influenced y Japanese Super GT racing, if that wasn’t obvious at fi st glance. The hood and front bumper are merged into a cowl, plus the receded, veined, front fenders, and chassis-mounted GT

wing that sprouts from the rear bumper are defini e telltale signs. For the cowl setup, the OE hood, front bumper and fenders are all tossed and replaced with the BenSopra goodies. To open the “hood,” you need to pop it up after it’s released, slide it forward a little, and then have someone get on the other side and help you raise it forward. It’s a little more complicated, but the effect is oh so worth it. The install of the cowl is also particularly complicated, as I’m told by both Pang, and Dave Ng at MS Auto, who put this beast together. “I know there are kits out there where you can’t even open the hood all the way up because the installers didn’t do a good job,”

Pang says, shooting a glance over in Ng’s direction. “It took a long time to adjust everything. The headlights don’t move, so when the hood closes, it has to be perfect every time. There are shortcuts to get it done, but he didn’t take any shortcuts.” Apparently, if there’s a little gap somewhere in the kit, some people will

body-fill it. Not Ng. If there wa an imperfection, he would cut the bumper in pieces and re-fibe glass everything to make sure it was perfect. “I’m surprised we’re still friends,” jokes Pang. “Right, Dave?” From across the shop, Ng raises his middle finger i Pang’s direction. Another shop that was monumental, especially in getting this GT-R moving, is Advance Powerhouse, or APH as they’re more well known. The R35, affectionately referred to as “Ben” now, received the full HKS GT800 treatment,

which includes two GT II 7460 symmetry turbos, wastegates, intakes, exhaust manifolds, and other turbo-back exhaust-dispelling goodies. APH also fabricated the whole rear section of the exhaust system to mirror BenSopra’s Japanese demo car, and I’d say they nailed it.

They even snuck in a custom tune while tinkering on Ben, which runs through a Cobb Accessport V3 and nets Pang 690 all-wheelhorsepower and 685 lb-ft of torque. These numbers may be a little underwhelming to enthusiasts who are used to seeing R35s pushing 1,000 and above ponies, but this is because of a little-known bottleneck that slots in at 700 horses and above. “If you have too much horsepower, it ruins the transmission if it’s not rebuilt,” Pang cautions. “You either stay under 700 horsepower, or you go to 1,200 is what I’ve learned. That bottleneck is like $40,000 difference, but once you go through that bottleneck, it’s easy to hit 1,000 horsepower. The tough part is that you have to rebuild everything once you go past 700 horsepower.” Another thing that can be dream crushing to GT-R owners going the widebody route is not sticking within the rolling diameter variance degree when picking out wheels and tires. With the advanced AWD system that each Godzilla houses, the system is very picky (as are most) in terms of what it’s willing to roll if what it’s rolling isn’t close enough to that magic percentage.

It seems like things will stay that way as well, as Pang has no plans to part ways with Ben anytime soon. Naming the car pretty much seals the deal there.

here comes a time when you’re pushing the boundaries of what your car can do and “offthe-shelf” just won’t cut it anymore. As limits get pushed further and further out of spec, custom parts are needed to accommodate where enthusiasts want to take their builds. One such modification that has embraced cus omizability is suspension, which makes sense, since suitable suspension, whether for looks or performance, can make or break a build. Nowadays, there’s so much choice out there, and it can be a little overwhelming to find what xactly is right for you. With that in mind, we chased down three separate suspension companies (BC Racing, MCA Suspension, and SCALE Suspension), all of which offer different sets of suspension for different builds, with their own unique twist on a spring and damper setup. Here’s a rundown of who we spoke to and how they answered:

suspension products to North America by Taiwan Bor-Chuan Enterprises - producer of the BC Racing coilover systems - one of the industry’s major suspension manufacturers for over a decade. Since the beginning, BC Racing has prided itself on providing extremely high-quality coilover systems for an affordable price, and has offered full customization of their applications since 2006. At what point should an enthusiast consider a set of BC Racing cust om coilovers?

“A customer should only step into the area of customized coilovers if they are doing something out of the norm, or the car is a dedicated track car. Otherwise, we highly suggest they stick with our default specs, as they are carefully thought-out and thoroughly tested to be optimized for a wide array of things from street driving to light track use.”

What are some of the custom options that BC Racing offers?

“We offer a ton of customizability, from the no cost options, such as shock length, spring length and spring rate, we also offer upgrades like caster camber plates, rear camber plates, and Swift springs, where applicable.” What are the changes t o the coilover when it becomes an Extreme Low version?

“The BC Racing Extreme Low series utilizes a combination of shorter dampers, as well as shorter springs, allowing the customer to achieve a specific ride height they had in mind ”

eliminates everything cool about your coilovers because they’re doing nothing at that point. Stance-oriented builds are generally higher in spring rate to prevent wheel travel in tight fitment setups, along with shor er shocks and springs to achieve the customer’s desired ride height. The ability to use sometimes much shorter shocks and springs allows users to get much lower than they ever would with an outof-the-box coilover setup.”

How would a set of BC Racing coilovers be customized for a track-oriented build versus a stance-oriented build?

“Longer-stroke shocks, for example, are great for drag and drift setups using low spring rates because they allow for a full range of compression and rebound to prevent the vehicle from bottoming out on the bump stops, which

was started by Josh’s father, Murray Coote, back in 1990. MCA started off nly dealing with custom-made, high-end motorsport suspension that could be built to suit any car and application. Due to their custom nature, they’ve tackled suspension for boat seats and prototype jetpack landing gear. It was around 2012 that MCA started the Red, X, and Blue Series custom suspension options targeting the enthusiast market.

At what point should an enthusiast consider a custom set of suspension from MCA?

“Essentially, as soon as the customer is either needing or wanting to change their suspension, no matter what the reason, they should consider a quality set of dampers. Adjustable ones are handy, as they give you some control over how the car rides and performs, as well as ride height, and in some cases some extra camber adjustment. Plus, we can suggest to you a setup that is suited to your specific type o application, so you could end up with a far superior setup than OEM this way.” How could a set of MCA Suspension be customized for a track-oriented build versus a stance-oriented build? Why should someone consider an upgrade to Swift springs?

“Swifts springs allow for a more consistent compression rate, and more travel compared to a comparable steel spring. The results of which is a more comfortable, compliant ride, as well as accurate consistent performance over bumps and undulations.” Is there anything that BC Racing offers as a custom option that you’d consider exclusive?

“The ability to sell all parts individually, which allows the end-user to customize their kit down the road if they change what they’re doing with the car. We have the ability to adapt their current system to whatever they’re looking to do, which prevents them from having to buy an entire kit every time they want to make changes.”

“Basically, stance is really about ride height and, in some cases, wheel alignment mainly camber. With the way we design our setups, they are already designed to allow for maximum suspension travel that the car can handle safely, no matter the ride height. This means that as long as your wheels and tires actually fit our car properly, you should be able to lower it down as far as you like, and still not have any significan scrubbing or contact issues. In the case of MCA, a track setup could be a stance setup with just ride height and alignment change added. With other brands, there might be quite a bit more to play with as they don’t control the suspension travel properly. This is why you see some brands and owners going with ridiculously stiff sprin rates - they don’t know how to control the suspension travel properly.”

How do custom options differ between MCA’s different “Series” models?

“Blue Series are an entry level setup designed for street comfort and some basic, low level performance. X-C Series perform about the same as the Blues but are even more comfortable and smoother feeling. X-R Series ride a touch firmer than the blue but perform significantly bet er and would be considered a great ‘all-rounder’ for most car enthusiasts. Red Series are completely custom-valved to order, and can be made to be anything from a full comfort street setup, to a time attack race car setup, and everything in between. They also have a very high level of quality control, as each damper is dyno-tuned and tested before being sent out.” Is there anything that MCA offers as a custom option that you’d consider exclusive?

“Our suspension is made to order. For the Blues, X-Cs and X-Rs, you can customize the springs, and with the Reds, the valving and springs are custom. Valving is the heart of the damper and is a major critical component as to how the whole package feels and performs. The whole premise of how we design, develop, setup, and adjust our suspension is completely unique to the rest of the market.”

Bearing gravitational torque (BGT): Best-seller option for comfort. Removes all friction between the top plates and the strut. Eliminates any squeaky sounds at slow turns. Custom spring rates: Free option available at purchase. Custom color springs: Ideal for a one-off set tailored to the customer’s tastes. Can do some combos to fit either the ca , or the wheels. Pillowball option: Ideal for a stiffer drive, offering more precision and better overall performance. Stainless Steel Hardware Upgrade: Good for a long-term purchase, especially customers driving their car all-year long, in different conditions. How could a set of SCALE coilovers be customized for a track-oriented build versus a stance-oriented build?

“A track build will mainly be oriented with functional options rather than aesthetic ones. Those customers will go for circuit specs for the spring rates, specific o their car’s weight and driver’s preference. On the other side, a stance build might choose options like Low or Extreme Low versions, custom spring rates for specifi fitment, cus om color choice, hardware upgrade for stainless steel, etc.”

Is there anything that SCALE offers as a custom option that you’d consider exclusive?

"What we are most proud about our product comes standard with every application. Our patented exclusive measurement system, laser-engraved straight on the struts, to help customers lower their car without having to take out the measuring tape." You’d be hard pressed to find another wheel company that is featured on as many high profile builds and offers a vast array of custom wheel designs and options as Rotiform. What is now one of the most popular wheel brands in North America and Europe started with two guys who were sick of their jobs and wanted to get into something they were passionate about: awesome wheels.

2009, Jason Whipple and Brian Henderson quit their jobs and scrounged up every single one of their pennies to order a container of cast wheels in two designs: the BLQ we all know and love, and the MIA that didn’t fly as ell. With a sample set of their BLQs on a show car at Ultimate Dubs in the UK, their wheels were an instant hit, and the guys sold out of their fi st container of wheels before they even landed. Now, running the business with their new owners, MHT Luxury Alloys, Rotiform is able to offer more designs and options than ever to make a dream set of wheels for just about anyone and their vehicle. To talk about Rotiform’s rise to success and how they go about creating their tailored wheels, we were able to grab Jason Whipple’s attention before he got on a plane to the UK. Read on for a peek behind the scenes and into the machine shop of Rotiform! Has the manufacturing process changed in the casting of the wheels you were making back then, as opposed to now?

The cast wheel process is similar to what is was then. We’re just more established now, have a better relationship with factories, and we have a better translation from engineering to what you actually get in the mold in metal. We’re able to do that much faster than before. With the scope of MHT and their distribution channels and buying

power, we’re able to do many more designs, and we’re not limited in what we can do because we have a 350,000 square-foot facility and 25 warehouses – a huge distribution channel. But that doesn’t change where Brian and I came from. We’re enthusiasts. We love cars. We modify cars. That’s still our hobby, even though it’s now our job as well. I think that’s what sets us apart.

Would you say that your focus, starting out, was a little more Euro-heavy, platform-wise?

Absolutely. That’s where we came from. We were always German car guys – VWs and Audis – although we had Japanese stuff when e were growing up as well. My fi st car was a ’91 Civic Si, which I loved, but mainly it was German stuff: V , Audi, Porsche, BMW. That’s what we aimed our original market at. Now, we really do everything. With the forged stuff, it’s evenly spread across all brands, and with cast stuff e do bespoke fitment cas wheels for GT-Rs and FR-Ss, so now we can cover more markets.

What would you say Rotiform’s focus is in building wheels?

We build stuff e like, honestly. We try not to just follow a trend or where the industry is going. If we wouldn’t want to see it on our own car, we won’t build it. We also really appreciate some of the designs from the past. There are some wheels from the ‘80s and ‘90s that aren’t available anymore, so we put a modern spin on those and offer it in a different configuration or a di ferent size. Then you can get that retro look on a new car, but have everything function, engineeringwise, like it should.

What kind of inspiration do you draw from when you’re designing wheels?

A lot of times inspiration will come from an old race wheel, or something like that. Sometimes there will be a few different wheels that we like that fit in o the same family, so we’ll get inspiration to draw a new wheel that’s reminiscent of the old stuff. Our latest cast wheel, the RSE, uses a covered cap, which people don’t do much anymore. It harkens back to the old TSW Hockenheim Rs – that old look that we all love, but no one does anymore. That’s a lot of how we come up with design ideas. Sometimes we’ll just come up with an idea when we’re around the barbeque, having some beers after dinner at home, you know? Aside from your cast wheel line, you also offer a completely custom line of forged wheels. Can you go into some of the options available with the custom line?

The custom options we’re now able to offer are really amazing. We can do forged monoblock, forged two-piece, in either a welded or bolted construction, or a forged three-piece. The cool thing about where we are now is everything, 100-percent, is done under one roof. We have concept designers who can draw things in 3D for us, we have engineers who will draw the wheel in CAD and model it that way, we have a full machine shop with 25 mills that runs three shifts to machine the wheels, we have finishing in-house or either custom paint or powdercoating, and we have a full polish shop inhouse. We even have destructive test rigs that we can run a wheel on to fatigue it until it fails. There are FEA analysis programs you can run now that’ll give you a ballpark idea of what happens, but you don’t really know until you mount a tire on a wheel and run it for a million cycles to see if it fails in any way. That’s been huge for us. What kinds of testing certific tions do your wheels carry?

All of our cast wheels are JWL and DOT compliant to those standards, and we do have some cast wheels that are TUV approved in

Every forged wheel is engineered to the vehicle it’s built for. If you’ve got a 6,000-pound G Wagon, that wheel will be built specifically or that load rating, versus something for an MX-5, which can be built much lighter. There’s a lot that goes into it that people don’t realize. What sort of research should a customer do on vehicle fi ment fir t before reaching out for a custom set of wheels?

We have fitment data or nearly every vehicle on the road today. We even share some data with TUV for vehicles overseas as well. So, if a customer doesn’t know their fitment, or they re not “stance guys” and don’t have an exact offset and width picked out, we have the data to help them pick a good fitment. Al ernatively, if you’ve got a 2015 Subaru WRX that wants to run 18x11.5 with a negative-10 offset and run eightor nine-degrees of camber all the

way around, we can build that as well. I think that’s our advantage; we know both sides of that coin. We’ve always prided ourselves on the fitment of our wheels, so e can build exactly what the customer wants or give suggestions on offsets and widths, if needed. If the customer has made previous modific tions to their vehicle, what are the ones you guys want to know about to get the perfect fitment

If the factory brakes or suspension have been changed, that defini ely makes a difference, especially If we’re building for something that is on coilovers versus air suspension. A lot of cars nowadays have suspension that articulates and gains camber as it lowers or moves through its travel, so for an air suspension guy, it’s going to be a different setup than it would be for a coilover guy. We always take that into account on the build sheets we send out. There are a number of options for you to choose from,

and we also have a section where you can fill out bra es and suspension so we can take that into account as well. When assembly takes place, what kind of hardware do you use?

We have a multitude of hardware options. We have exposed hardware, hidden hardware, and titanium hardware. All of our exposed hardware has custom color options, so we can powder-coat or treat those to match the vehicle or contrast the vehicle to get a different look. We also have a fift -fift option that is half-hidden and halfexposed. It all adds up to a ton of choices to get the look you want.

What kind of aluminum forgings do you use at Rotiform?

The aluminum forgings we use are all made and sourced here in California. Generally, it’s a 6061 forging, and they’re forged on a 60,000-ton press. We’ve been to the forging manufacturers, and when that press is stamping out forgings, it shakes the whole neighborhood. The forgings are available in so many different sizes, depths, and profiles, which is another stumbling block or a small company. You just can’t physically stock all those parts. We now keep nearly every forging available so we can make any depth of concavity and different sizes and fitmen s we couldn’t do before. The challenge in building a forged wheel is that you’re trying to use the smallest forging you can so you don’t have as much waste. It can be really tough to manage that on a small scale, so we’re lucky that we can do it this way now.

The process a custom set of Rotiform wheels go through, from start to finish.

First, the forgings go to the lathe department, where programmers set a lathe program to give the center a concave, convex, or fla profile

Next, the centers go to the milling department for shaping and milling in the bolt pattern. If the wheels have hidden hardware, the centers are flippe over in the mill and tapped. Otherwise, the centers will get a through-drill. Each center is then engraved with a serial number, part number, date, and finish

In the prep department, all centers are polished down to 220-grit for powdercoat or paint. Polished wheels will be taken a few steps further for a mirror-like finish “We’ll typically prep the wheels down to 220grit, and that is a skill unto itself. It looks like the dirtiest job in the world, and it totally is. The guys who do this are really talented because the polishing can actually change the shape of the wheel. These guys can enhance the shape of a wheel by the way they polish something.”

After being prepped to spec, the centers are dunked in an ultrasonic tank and hand-rubbed and rinsed with a pressure washer to clean any contaminants from polishing. Then the wheels are dried with compressed air and bagged to prevent any dust from getting on the prepped centers while they wait for their custom finish

The finished cen ers then head to a staging area in the main shop, where they meet the rim parts that have been specifically ordered or brake clearance and desired fitment The center is adjusted by fractions of a millimeter to go with rim parts that are only available in half-inch increments. “We generally try to run the largest lip we can, which ends up producing a lighter wheel because you don’t have such a huge backpad on the center.” An assembly team of four guys that have been with Rotiform since the beginning assemble each wheel by installing a few fasteners loosely and running the wheel on a runout fixture, adjustin everything within 30,000ths of an inch of total runout. Runout: Any component of a wheel that isn’t perfectly round. A wheel that isn’t perfectly round can result in wobbles and vibrations while driving. Use of a runout fixture ensures that the whee is adjusted to be a round as possible. After they’re happy, all fasteners are installed and torqued, the wheels are sealed, and then torqued again. A registration sticker is then applied to the barrel, which states when the wheels were assembled, who assembled them, and their signature. “We also have a history on the customer’s build. Every set we produce is serial numbered, dated, and recorded. So, say they sell it to somebody or sell their car and the buyer needs a part or needs something refinished, e can track it back to the original purchase and engineering.”

The wheels are then ready to be boxed and shipped to the eagerly waiting customer.

What happens if you catch an imperfection on the wheel during inspection?

In the final assembly process where we mock up the wheel, all the finishes are xamined. If there’s something that has a speck of dust or a paint defect, we mark it and take it to back to have it refinished. That s the beauty of having everything all under one roof. It doesn’t really hamper your time to delivery like it would when we fi st started. When we fi st started, we would pick up our wheels from the machine shop, then take it to our polisher, then take it to our painter, and then we’d have to bring it back to our shop to assemble it. All these places were 20 miles away, so if there’s a problem, we’d basically have to start over. Having everything all under one roof has really expedited the process, which allows us to build a set of wheels super quick if there’s no queue. Unfortunately, and fortunately, we have a big queue!

What’s the general timeline look like from customer order to delivery?

Is there anything you can let us in on as to what Rotiform is working on for the future?

We aim to have wheels in the customer’s hands in about four to fi e weeks, which is probably quicker than anybody in the industry. We can build a set of wheels in a few days, but that’s all hands on deck. There are some of our designs that take eight or nine hours in the machine per center. All these processes in a couple days just adds up to a lot of time, and when you take a walk through the shop and see that there are real people doing all of this, it’s pretty amazing that we can get it all done in four weeks.

We’re doing some really cool off-road stuff or Toyotas and Jeeps. That’s been a lot of fun because while we all like performance and stance and car shows, it’s awesome to get out on a dusty trail somewhere. And if you have a racecar, you have to have a truck! That’s been really fun. We’re also doing smaller sizes in our cast wheels, which is cool because a lot of the older cars are running smaller sizes, so we’re going to expand that a bit. That’ll be good for early Euros and Japanese stuff that run 15- and 16-inc wheels. We’re currently doing 17, which is turning out to be really popular with the E30 BMW crowd and E36 BMW guys. As time progresses and things shift more to autonomous electric cars, all these old, affordable, sportscars are going to become what we gravitate towards, I think. Everybody is buying up air-cooled Porsches, so I think the next thing everybody is going to be buying up is E36 BMWs and early Honda stuff – anythin that was fun and engaging and you don’t pick up your phone because you’re enjoying it. We’ll start really going back to that, I hope.

In the automotive journalism space, when you hear the words “product launch,” you immediately think a manufacturer is launching a new model of car, and they want some journos to go lash it around to see how well it performs and measures up against the competition. Every so often, a tire manufacturer will latch onto a launch event, letting the media test the new vehicle with a tire that suits its characteristics, so I was a little confused when we got an invite from Michelin only to test their new Pilot Sport 4S tires. Little did I know, the event, which they appropriately call an “experience,” would blow many OEM launches I’d been on in the past out of the water.

We arrived in Palm Springs, California, to learn we would be splitting our day up between two driving events to test the Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S): one in and around Joshua Tree National Park, and the other at The Thermal Club racetrack. As someone who just finished their last season o a set of very well used Pilot Super Sports – the tires that the PS4S has replaced – I was really looking forward to seeing how the new Pilots would measure up. The “4” in the PS4S’s name stands for fourth generation, as in the fourth in the lineup of Pilot Sport models - Pilot Sport, Pilot Sport PS2, and Pilot Super Sport (PSS) being the predecessors. As well as expanding on everything the PSS offered, the PS4S also borrows some technology from one of its older brothers, the Pilot Sport Cup 2, in the form of a hybrid belt made from Kevlar and nylon, which helps the tire keep its shape at high speeds and increases the variable contact patch design the tire carries. Michelin developed, patented, and manufactured two types of rubber that make up the multi-tread compound construction of the PS4S. The inside shoulder of the tire sees an increase of silica, adding cornering

stability and bolstering braking performance in the wet, while the outer features a carbon black material that dissipates heat for better dry grip. Our fi st batch of testing for the day would be behind the wheel of a Ferrari California T, followed by an Audi R8 V10, and finally Mercedes-Benz C63S AMG, all of which were, of course, equipped with PS4Ss. We were able to push these cars (except for the R8 due to a killjoy park ranger) with some aggressive braking and cornering against the picturesque landscape, in and around Joshua Tree. Doing straight lines as fast as we could after each other in the C63 felt very comfortable and planted, encouraging some pretty late braking. Also, the noise from the tires spinning against the road was fairly low while doing their work, allowing the fantastic noises the engines and exhausts on these cars made to flood the cabin ins ead. After finishing up on the stree s, we were greeted to the sounds of Porsche Cup cars practicing on the track when we arrived at the

gorgeous Thermal Club facility. The rest of our day was made up of testing the PS4Ss on M model BMWs on the track, and on 340i Bimmers on the auto-x course. On the track was a lead and follow exercise in M3s, chasing an instructor in an M2. The racing instructor was on a one-way walkie-talkie the whole time, encouraging myself and a colleague to push the limits of our driving, saying we had the grip to do so. He was never wrong. There were times when I would think I’d lose it because of how far I thought I was pushing the tires, but the grip was always there, keeping myself and my M3 planted as we progressively took corners faster and faster. The trickle down effect of motorsport technology, especially from Michelin’s experience in LeMans, is extremely evident when these tires are pushed. Moving to the auto-x course, a sprinkler truck had just finishe laying down an extremely wet fi st corner for us to come into. After that corner, we would move onto a challenging series of turns and

obstacles, as laid out by pylons, all the way until a braking section at the end of the run, which measured our 60-to-0-mph braking distance. As we acclimatized ourselves to the track and improved our times, we then swapped over to a competitor tire on a different 340i. I hopped into the Pirelli-PZeroNero-GT-equipped BMW, hearing positive reviews about the tire and thinking it would be comparable. Turns out I was wrong. All the newfound confidence I had ound with the PS4S was soon dashed with the PZeros, as I found the rear becoming unrulier, and could hear protest from the tires as they struggled to cling to the track while whipping around pylons. The stopping difference was also very noticeable, taking about nine extra feet to come to a complete stop at the end of the lane. Getting back into the PS4Ss right after to feel the difference again sealed the deal. Twenty-sixteen saw many tire manufacturers closing in on the Pilot Super Sport, which held the ultra-high performance tire crown for the longest time, but the PS4S has now propelled Michelin even further ahead of the pack. After spending a full day in Palm Springs ripping around on Michelin’s latest, comparing it to the predecessor from daily use, and the competition in competitive driving, I can confidently say that Michelin s Pilot Sport 4S tires are above and beyond any performance tires I’ve tested thus far.
