ould you know what I was talking about if I mentioned that “Justification for a higher education” poster? I had one on my wall as a kid. It pictured a five-car garage that housed a Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Corvette, and a convertible BMW, from left to right, and had this half painted, half Photoshopped background of a humongous beach house on a cliffside, overlooking the sea at sunset. You know the one I’m talking about? I made it my dream to go through school, get into post-secondary, and graduate with a high-paying job that would allow me to own at least one of those cars. Unfortunately, I chose to focus on journalistic writing, so I get to write about them, while my dropout friends cruise around in Maseratis. Oh, the irony. Hear me out though – I think that’s what makes us all so drawn to supercars and exotics, no matter our age, or if we got the own them or not. As budding car enthusiasts, we all had the posters on our bedroom walls, which soon evolved into desktop wallpapers of these cars we would give a lung to own one day. We took that spirit of supercar adoration, and injected it into this issue, which has been highly requested by you guys. Whether it’s by the Audi R8 that’s built with Audisport LMS parts, just like the racecar, or the 700-wheel-horsepower Liberty Walk Gallardo, or even the coverage of the Snowball Rally, where supercar owners take their cars from Cali to Colorado and play in the snow, or anything else in the issue, we hope we hit that aspirational spot to make you feel like

a kid again. As always, our usual unwavering event coverage, spotlight on the latest and greatest products, TBGLIVE winner features, and thoughtful pieces by our columnists are all still here as well. Side note: We also got a few complaints about the Spot the Differences difficulty (the last few were a little too hard, weren’t they?), so we’ve made this issue’s a little more bearable. Thanks for the feedback! Enjoy the issue! In the meantime, I’ll be trying to convince the guy at the cars & coffee meet to let me drive his McLaren.

TOP THREE PERFORMANCE VEHICLES AVAILABLE TODAY ON AN ENTHUSIAST BUDGET
While this issue has focused on some ultra-high-performance exotica that few of us will ever be able to afford, I thought it would be a good time to point out some really great deals that exist for the everyday enthusiast on a more down-to-earth budget. Here are my top five picks in no particular order, from all across the spectrum, and available with a vast catalogue of aftermarket options.
$33k+ (ROUGH EST)
$31k+ (ROUGH EST)
$30k+ (ROUGH EST)
FORD MUSTANG GT
I just couldn’t put this list together without including one of the best performance values for a traditional V8 muscle car guy. While the 2017 Mustang isn’t the quickest horse in Ford’s stable, the GT represents the kind of power, fun, and driving pleasure that few other cars at the $33K price point can bring. With the complete redesign of the rear suspension, we finally get a Mustang that handles corners as well as it burns rubber in a straight line. With the GT’s 5.0-liter V8 power and torque, it has all the abundant, tire-smoking performance we've come to expect from this venerable nameplate. Although there are Mustangs available with V6 and turbocharged four-cylinder engines, none of them can really be called performance choices. I say go with the GT and real V8 under the hood, and you’ll turn every grocery run into a true mission.
MAZDA MIATA MX-5
Following up the complete refresh of the Miata last year, Mazda managed to build the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata smaller and lighter than the car it replaces without sacrificing interior space, safety or equipment. Thanks to the reduced weight, this version is even crisper and more fun to drive. It zips around turns with enthusiasm and precision few other cars can match, regardless of price. I can’t tell you how much fun it is to watch a well-driven Miata spank a six-figure supercar on a twisty road course. Sure, it gets eaten on the straights, but its reliable 155-horsepower four-cylinder engine still produces enough power and sound to make powering out of those turns a real joy. It’s available with a six-speed automatic, but this is another car that begs you to get the manual transmission, which is one of the slickest gearboxes on the planet. And no, these are not “chick cars”. It takes a lot of skill for a driver to reach the handling limits of an MX-5 on a twisty track. You can have more fun in a 2017 Miata than cars that cost twice as much or more.
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI SPORT
The hot hatch segment was pretty much invented by the Volkswagen GTI back in the ‘70s, and the 2017 version is plenty capable of maintaining the car’s reputation for fun and exciting driving. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 220 horsepower, while maintaining 25/33 mpg. The car can be had for around $30K, yet is rewarding to drive quickly in the same way that a Porsche or Ferrari is, but with good everyday value, great fuel economy, and as expected from a German marque, the best interior in the segment. You can get it with two or four doors, manual or auto transmissions, while the Sport model includes 10 more horsepower, a limited slip differential, and bigger brakes. The ride is firm without being harsh, and about what you would expect from a car with the handling pedigree of a GTI.

THE DEATH OF JDM? Adam Zillin
Mike Kojima of MotoIQ, recently lamented the downfall of Japanese automotive dominance in a post entitled, “Japanese Cars Suck!” Now, I take what Mike said very seriously, not only because of his decades of experience in the field, on and off the track, with stints at Nissan and TRD, but also because I completely agree with him; Japanese cars do suck right now.
B
eginning in the ‘70s, then building into the ‘80s, with a huge Mozart-inspired crescendo into the ‘90s and early 2000s, Japan, through immense amounts of foreign and domestic cash injections, ingenious thinking, and a can-do attitude, became filthy rich off the back of an industrial and economic explosion in every manufacturing sector; especially automotive. Every manufacturer poured countless sums of money into beating each other to the goal of making a car everyone lusted after. Those days gave us GT-Rs, the NSX, the JZA80 Supra, as well as smaller, but just as potently engineered beasts, like the Celica GT-4, DC2 Integra and EK9 Civic, Mitsubishi’s Evo series, and the GC8 WRX STi, just to name a few. The beauty of the ‘80s and ‘90s was that you could get a
sport or hardcore version for just about everything on the market, and that endeared brands to fans, which in turn, turned fans into lovers of the brand for life. Those channels still run deep. If you look at what Japan was capable of when it really tried and cash had no limit, we got the decades of JDM that so many enthusiasts pine for as the “glory days.” The truth is, it’s never going to happen again, and it’s a sad thing for me to admit. Japan Inc. is no longer so emotionally invested in catering for the enthusiast, let alone the one who wants three pedals and a turbocharger. So, where did JDM go wrong? It’s deeply embedded in the culture - specifically, in corporate culture. Japanese hardcore management and business owners will never give up power to the “young guy,” even if everything is
falling apart. “I’d rather go down with the ship than pass the torch to someone else,” one notable aftermarket performance parts manufacturer told me with startling candidacy over drinks one night. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and shook my head incredulously. “How can you not want to pass the torch to the next generation?” I asked. “Because they’re not interested in the future - only the past. And even then, they don’t even have the vision,” came the cryptic response. It took me a while later to realize that I was also among those people clinging to legacy without a single hope of recreating a future for it in a world filled with Teslas and
We’re sick of the promises and the concepts that never end up looking or performing like the final version. While Japan has largely languished in obscurity for the better part of 15 years, with a few notable exceptions (86, GT-R, MX-5, etc.), American and European manufacturers have stuck to their roots and continue to churn out inspiring, clean, efficient, and soul-stirring sports platforms the world wants to play with. BMW is a huge boon here. Ferrari is the absolute epitome of sticking to one’s roots. Who buys a Ferrari in any other color than red, anyway? The problem with Japan is not that it can’t make amazing machines across all platforms, but that it refuses
AND THAT’S WHY THE CARS SUCK - THERE’S NO SOUL BECAUSE THERE’S NO SOUL TO IMBUE. self-driving Google-mobiles. And that’s why the cars suck - there’s no soul because there’s no soul to imbue. There’s no interest in what they’re supposed to be because the Japanese manufacturers aren’t listening, so we cling to the warm glow of legacy because that’s what we have left. Invariably, these days, when manufacturers show us what they’ve done, too often we feel cheated.
to do so because when the team of bland, bean-counting suits are involved, the result is a bloated, ugly, overpriced appliance that gets universally panned for being out of touch, and hurts those who loved the brand for what it once stood for. Enjoy the '80s and '90s while you still can, guys, before it gets completely unaffordable.

You may recognize Ryan Jones as the owner of the R34 GT-R that’s picture perfect to the one that Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor hit the streets in in Fast & Furious, the fourth movie in the franchise. That's because the down-to-thebolts Bayside Blue GT-R is that car! However, Jones still isn’t satisfied with how it sits, and is now setting his sights on the future. “In short, what I’m doing is a modern take on the car,” Jones explains. “I mean, the car honestly looks a bit dated with its style. Basically, I want it to look how Brian O'Conner would do it today if he had an R34.”

the total of all being surprisingly cheaper than respraying the car. One of the largest draws of Calimlim’s car, aside from being a Supra, is his exclusive Ridox kit, which is carbon fiber accented. With under 100 percent being not good enough, the hunt was on to find a way to make the kit all CF. Luckily, Calimlim has an awesome hookup with the guys at Shine Auto Project, who were willing to replicate the Ridox kit in carbon weaves. The result is a kit that is a one of one carbon set of body pieces that replicates the Ridox kit and perfectly ties in the new theme. “Complete with canards, front splitter, side skirts, and rear overfenders, the car started to come together and, from here on, the Last year, Chris Calimlim

teven Jackson stumbled upon Lexus’ RC F by accident, but it was love at first sight. “My girlfriend and I were purchasing her car from Lexus in 2014, when a salesman asked if I had seen the new sports car Lexus was introducing in 2015 (the RC F). After looking over the brochure and what not, I knew I had to have one,” he says. “As soon as they became available I looked into buying one.” It wasn’t long before he saw other RC Fs with wide body kits, and he was dead-set on his end goal. Jackson and his girlfriend ended up driving out to California to pick one up in blue, because all of the

blue ones were sold out in Las Vegas before they were even on showroom floors. Once he got the car, he said he wasn’t going to modify it, and keep the RC F stock, but we all know how that goes. “Like everyone else that just buys a new car, I promised myself I was not going to mod it and it would remain stock. That lasted

about a month before I had custom three-piece wheels on order,” he tells us, reminiscing about simpler times. “Once they came in, I took them to WheelsHouse 702 where the owner Josh asked if I wanted to enter a car show with his shop’s booth. This was my first actual show and from that moment on I was hooked.”

Jackson considers his build a bit of a puzzle that now flows together perfectly, but it wasn’t entirely an easy road to this point. When shopping for the right wheels, he hit a bit of a complex problem. “[The] body shop wanted to have the wheels before
making cuts into the quarter panels, but we couldn't get offsets sizes until the fenders were bolted up to the car for measurements,” he says, explaining his predicament. “Thankfully I went with a wheel company who has had the most incredible

customer service I could have asked for. Mike at Platinum Forged truly earned a customer for life through this process.” Once all the details were ironed out, it was a matter of fitting the puzzle pieces together. Mike from Platinum Forged helped Jackson find the right size and design of wheel to compliment the build perfectly, and the pieces came together. Air suspension was installed by Rodshop in Las Vegas to set the car low, but also keep things practical. Today, this RC F is one fine piece of artwork.

2006 TOYOTA MATRIX By Adam Gordon | Photography By Fardeen Shere (
randon Hamid grew up playing with Hot Wheels and toy cars, but he would change little things about the cars whenever he could. The modification bug started at a young age, and continued to his very first build, the Toyota Matrix you see here. “I decided to get the AWD Matrix because I wanted a car that not many people had,” he says. “I wanted something that would stand out and draw a different kind of attention.” Once he took possession of the Matrix, he intended to make it an underdog show car. “You go out to most shows and you’ll see a Supra or MR2, but never anything like a Matrix. One thing I loved about choosing this vehicle was everyone saying I wouldn’t be able to beat a Supra,” he tells us. “I took that as a challenge,

and now at most shows I attend I end up beating them.” Starting with such an obscure and rarely modified platform left Hamid with few options when searching out modifications. Even suspension was a challenge with the AWD setup of the car. Sure enough, after enough perseverance and some searching, he managed to secure some key modifications for his build and install most parts in his driveway. Hamid’s intentions were to take the road less traveled, and by all

accounts he seems to have done just that. “I really did not have any influences looking back at my build,” says Hamid. “I wanted to pave my own path and stand out. For example, I was once told one way to be different was to always modify your mods, because anyone can go out and buy the same part or paint as you.” In his journey to build a one-ofa-kind Toyota, Hamid seems to have done it. We’re sure the modification bug will continue to influence him into future car builds as well.

His friend Russel taught him to drive in a 2004 WRX, and from that moment on he fell in love with Subaru. This car isn’t all show and no go, either. IAG built one hell of an engine block to sustain the supporting power mods that Alaimo would do. A Forced Performance turbocharger, Cobb air filter, forged STI crankshaft and Brian Crower 625 connecting rods are just some of the engine modifications made to boost horsepower up to the 400 mark, a long way from where the WRX started. tr. Every March, people flock to Spring Break Nationals, held at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, to thaw out and partake in one of the biggest car audio events of the year. For the 31st annual Spring Break Nationals, however, a change in venue to the Daytona International Speedway gave way to new experiences and unforgettable moments, such as being an addition to the 1,200 classic cars of the Daytona Turkey Run, and adding a car show and swap meet to the infield of the speedway. Hundreds of car audio vehicles were on display at SBN to show off their systems in designated areas for each competition format. IASCA and MECA sound quality cars were parked in the blue garages where the Xfinity NASCAR teams work on their cars, along with car audio vendors just outside the garages. IASCA, dB DRA, MECA, and ISPLL SPL lanes were held in the infield, between Turn 1 and Turn 2, with Tuner Jam and SPL vendors also in Turn 2, and the extremely loud SPL demo vehicles just outside the track. A two-day visit was needed to see everything the show had to offer, even with shuttles available to get spectators around quickly to the spread-out car audio areas. Mark Eldridge received the Darrell Bell Award for his dedication to sound-off and industry proliferation through education and example. Many were happy to point out the small details of their build, and share why they chose to do what they did. Arguably that is the best part of a show like this. We all have our own interests

Memphis Car Audio VIV60C Component Review
A properly built component system that stays true to the Memphis heritage in every way imaginable.
rom a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, Memphis, Tennessee, is famous around the world as the home of blues and the birthplace of rock ‘n roll. Home to famous places, such as Beale St., the Gibson guitar factory, and Elvis’ Graceland mansion, the musical history is rich, deep, and abundant. Another historical company in the music business not only calls Memphis home, but it’s the company’s namesake. Founded in Memphis in 1965, Memphis Car Audio has been a leader in the car audio marketplace for decades, and has won “Best Overall” brand from Inside Track for 11 consecutive years. You don’t reach those sorts of accomplishments by resting on your laurels, and with the introduction of the new VIV “SIXFIVE” Series of products, they continue to show why so many people swear by the brand. For this review, we’ll take a look at the brand new VIV60C component speaker system. The product is so new that the system

we got for testing was still a factory prototype set, but by the time you read this, the gear should be in Memphis dealer’s showrooms. The VIV60C system is a two-way, 6.5-inch component system featuring a 37-mm (1.5-inch) silk dome tweeter and a bi-ampable crossover network. This high-end system has a suggested retail price in the U.S. of $629.95.
FEATURES AND CONSTRUCTION WOOFER Built with a focus on overall sound quality and high output, the VIV60C system’s woofer uses a special high-performance two-layer composite fiber cone. The material was chosen for its very low mass and overall stiffness. Engineers call this stiffness a “high modulus of elasticity,” which is a measurement of a given material’s resistance to deformation when a force is applied. What that means to the rest of us is a stiff cone that does not deform and cause unwanted distortion when we are enjoying our tunes at
enthusiastic levels. The woofer is built around a proprietary cast aluminum SIXFIVE basket, which is home to a two-ohm 30-mm (1.18-inch) copper voice coil, wound on a Kevlar-based former. Suspension for the woofer’s moving mass is handled by a linear-type spider made of Conex. On the top side, suspension duties fall to a NBR (nitrile butyl rubber) surround designed for high excursion capability. Instead of a traditional dustcap, the woofer uses a black anodized aluminum bullet shaped phase plug, designed to reduce phase cancellations between the cone and a traditional dustcap. Connections to the speaker are made with nice set-screwtype terminals that will accept 12-gauge wire. Cosmetics are classy and subtle, with a distinctive, high-end look and feel. A Memphis badge is built into the mounting flange of the woofer. The woofer will mount in any spot with a minimum of three inches of mounting depth.

TWEETER The tweeter used in the VIV60C system is an interesting design with a 37-mm silk dome, and a 25-mm voice coil. Magnetic energy is, of course, Neodymium-based, and a threaded housing makes the tweeter easy to mount. The grille is integrated into the housing to prevent accidental damage during installation.
CROSSOVER There has been a lot of attention paid to the design of the passive crossover networks supplied with this system. The crossovers are bi-ampable and have user adjustable settings for tweeter shelving, tweeter level, and slope. As the graphs show, all of these adjustments make significant differences in the sound of the

system and allow the tuner to set the system up for the best performance in that specific vehicle. The filters use high quality parts, with metal film capacitors and air core inductors. The look of the crossovers is also high-end oriented, with acrylic bases and top covers connected by aluminum stand offs. Terminals are of the nickel-plated, Phillips-screw-type, similar to what you see on a quality amplifier.
LISTENING As always, my favorite part of reviewing any product is listening to it, and the Memphis SIXFIVE system certainly did not disappoint. I began with the system basically set maximally flat, and as it turned out, I left it that way. The overall sound of the system is quite accurate
and smooth, with a warm midrange. High frequencies are smooth and non-sibilant, without harshness or bite, even on tracks with close mic’d brass sections. Sometimes the most telling tracks can be simple acoustical “unplugged” music. I listened to some classical acoustic guitar from Ottmar Liebert and Stanley Myers. The detail and dynamics are excellent, and the guitars had a natural timbre. Was it good enough that I could I tell D’Addario strings from Ernie Ball’s? Well, maybe not, but I could easily tell a Martin from a Takamine, so it’s very good indeed. Bottom end response has depth and warmth, retaining excellent articulation and good control even at higher volumes. Speakers like this make listening to really good bass

players like Geddy Lee, (Rush) Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies) or Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report) that much more special. Clarity and distinct voicing in female and harmony vocals from The Manhattan Transfer and The Eagles were also excellent. One sure sign of a well-engineered speaker system is that it sounds good regardless of the musical genre you play, so I went from classical to country, from rock to rap, and it was all good. After spending a few hours listening, it would seem the design goal of an accurate, yet still exciting sounding speaker system was definitely achieved.
CONCLUSION With the new SIXFIVE series of components, Memphis Car Audio has done their heritage and indeed there namesake proud. These are speakers that will be well received by anyone who truly loves music, whether you’re playing Elvis, Isaac Hayes, or W.C. Handy. The VIV60Cs will bring out the best in your tunes, and thanks to the adjustability in the system, be able to sound great in pretty much any application. Well-built and worth every nickel. Drop into your local Memphis Car Audio dealer and audition a set for yourself.

Orion HCCA5000.1DSPL Amplifier Review
A heavy duty amp that provides seriously heavy duty power.
ver the last 30 years, the Orion brand of car audio has garnered a high level of respect from folks who insist on high quality, high performance products. The marque has a proven track record for performance and reliability that only a handful of brands can match. Over the years, their flagship product series has been the HCCA series, and in this review we are going to take a look at a very powerful example: the new HCCA5000.1DSPL.
O
AND CONSTRUCTION “ONE LOOK AT FEATURES One look at the outside of the THE OUTSIDE box tells you this is a serious piece OF THE BOX of kit. A large warning sticker lets you know this is a high power TELLS YOU THIS amplifier that demands proper IS A SERIOUS care and feeding when it comes to current and voltage supplies. The PIECE OF KIT.” HCCA5000.1DSPL is a large, heavy amplifier, which makes perfect sense when you understand that this amplifier actually delivers the advertised power, unlike many others in today’s marketplace. The amp measures about two
56
feet long, a foot wide, three-anda-quarter inches tall, and tips the scales at almost 26 pounds. Like all its famous ancestors, the heatsink is a rich red anodized finish with laser-etched graphics that mimic the old CNC-machined style. The ends are finished with molded black caps that add to the all-business look. All of the controls and connections are made on the ends of the amplifier. On one side of the amp are the power and speaker connections, and to make sure there is no doubt about the current requirements, another warning sticker is placed over the connections, forcing the installer to pay attention. The power terminals are unlike any other amp, with three negative connections and three positive connections. These are large, heavy-duty terminals, and each will accept 1/0-gauge wire. Yeah, I think six 1/0 terminals ought to do it! The speaker terminals are similarly heavy duty, accepting huge four-gauge speaker cables. On the other end of the
amplifier are all the signal input and control functions. Panelmount-style RCAs are provided for signal input and output. The HCCA5000.1DSPL is designed to be able to run in Master/Slave configurations - when 5,000 watts just isn’t enough! Controls are provided for gain, low-pass crossover (40 Hz to 300 Hz) variable phase control, and a bass boost adjustment for up to 18 dB of boost at 45 Hz. For vented subwoofer applications, a switchable subsonic filter can (and should) be engaged. Also included is a wired remote level control, so you can adjust the relative volume of the bass right from the driver’s seat. A look inside the amplifier explains why it weighs 26 pounds. The amp is clearly designed for high-current operation and will easily drive one-ohm loads all day long. This amp has four high-current toroids in the power supply! There are 12 high-current MOSFETs in the output stage and 16 more in the power supply. Power supply energy storage is handled

by 16 2,200-µF capacitors, and the rails use 12 1500-µF 200-volt caps. That, folks, is a lot of capacitance. The PCB is military spec “FR4,” which means a glass epoxy substrate that is double sided, and the vias are plated through for maximum current flow, less internal heating, and greater reliability. Speaking of cooling, the heatsink is built with a special tunnel venting system under the top, and a threeinch, nine-bladed fan forces the hot air out each end of the amp. Protection circuitry is built in for over and under voltage, thermal over temp, and short circuits.
LISTENING Even though I seldom listen at really high volume, I never get tired of having a lot of power in my listening system. When you have enough power to get all the volume you want without ever getting near the amplifier’s (or speakers’) limits, listening to music can be a completely different experience. This amplifier delivers the sort of power that really needs to be experienced to be understood. I connected the HCCA5000.1DSPL to a pair of high-power-handling 15-inch woofers in a sealed enclosure. The resulting bottom end was ridiculous. I have been in movie theatres that didn’t have this kind of authority. Listening to this amp on a pair of high quality woofers proves once again the old adage that there’s no such thing as too much power. The bass is tight, well-defined and generally sounds great with any music, at any volume. Kick drum beats have the sort of impact you expect at a concert, and with what seems like an unlimited supply of clean power available, the listening experience is simply a lot of fun.
PERFORMANCE/BENCH MEASUREMENTS
general for such a powerhouse. As long as the vehicle is capable of supplying the required current, this amplifier could definitely be the cornerstone of a really good sound quality system, so it’s not just for the SPL crowd. If you run it into four ohms, you could likely get away with just a very good battery and a high-output alternator, but if you are going for every watt possible and insist on a one-ohm load, you are going to need at least two dedicated batteries to power the beast.

CONCLUSION
-40 10
Once again, the Orion amp exceeded even my expectations of it, and I’ve been measuring and testing Orion amplifiers for almost 20 years. If you are thinking about a new subwoofer amplifier, and you’re willing to step up to making the required current available, this amp could be the perfect choice. Just be prepared to match the big power to appropriate woofers, or you’ll be in trouble. The power is addicting, it’s rich with history and heritage, and it sounds great. For the majority of people, it may be the last subwoofer amplifier you’d need for a long time.

SNOWBALL RALLY 2017
FEATURED EVENT
HOW ONE PERCENT OF THE ONE PERCENT PLAY IN THE SNOW Story by David Coulter | Photography courtesy of DDE

When you were 10 years old, did you have a poster of a Ferrari on your wall? I did. In fact, it was a picture that also featured a Porsche, a Lamborghini, and a BMW. All four cars were perfectly parked in their custom-built garages, and in the background was a mansion overlooking the ocean. This is a common childhood dream, and for those who can grow up to afford it, a reality - specifically a beautiful supercar kept hidden away in a showroom garage. What about the people who actually drive their exotic cars? There’s an answer: Snowball Rally.

magine 25 supercars fitted with snow tires, traveling across some the worst winter conditions the United States has to offer – in the middle of January. Snowball Rally was created by the appropriatelytitled automotive media company, Daily Driven Exotics (DDE). The premise of DDE is simple: “Rain, Snow, or Shine – Drive or Die.” So naturally, the one of the most epic YouTube channels out there created the most extreme rally. With new rallies popping up every month, Snowball needed to be dramatically different if it wanted to stand out. In a very unique manner, the leadership team handpicked each participant based on specific parameters. The exclusive list of those chosen to be “Snowballers” was full of seasoned rally drivers that go against the grain and are true adventure seekers. These are automotive enthusiasts that never settle for anything ordinary and are brave enough to drive in conditions that the average driver would choose to avoid. These brave supercar owners are often referred to as the “one percent of the one percenters;” whereas, only one percent of the population can afford these cars, and only one percent of these select few actually drive them in the elements. Snowball Rally kicked off in snowy Lake Tahoe during the worst snowstorm in 10 years. In fact, the highway leading to

the hotel was closed just 12 hours prior to the start of the rally. After a meet and greet at the luxurious Ritz Carlton, the rally headed south to Las Vegas for the night - this was only a brief stop in warm weather. The adventure started the next morning as the Snowballers headed to Park City, Utah. The scenery on the drive was filled with snow-capped mountains and fast-moving highways. The Sundance Film Festival was in full swing as the convoy of supercars rolled into the snow-filled streets. The temperature was freezing, but the Snowball crew had thought of everything - providing everyone with a luxury winter parka.
The following day lead to Aspen, Colorado, where the ESPN Winter X- Games were underway. Participants were provided with VIP access to the events and concerts. Snowball Rally even went as far as renting a snow race track where Snowballers could practice their winter driven skills at high speeds! Snowball Rally would like to thank their sponsors for helping create the world's first annual winter driven supercar rally: Protective Film Solutions, CMFR Canada, GT CON & Vorsteiner. Snowball Rally is just warming up, and after only its first year, looks to set itself as the hottest automotive winter event out there.

STRE ET NAMED D Those of us with octane flowing through our veins have definitely dreamed of taking a purpose-built racecar out on the town, waking up the neighbors with an unrestricted exhaust, flying down empty residential streets and wide open country roads, and feeling the wide, sticky tires grip against the asphalt into a corner or out of a roundabout. It’s even something we daydream about when we get a section of open road in our daily drivers, imagining our engines with a few more cylinders and an invisible clock to race against (hopefully with no cops around). For one enthusiast in Vancouver, British Columbia, those fantasies have become a reality thanks to a tuning shop in Seattle, Washington.

the widebody, with it fitting neither Ayyagari's nor Ng’s vision, Ayyagari finally came to Ng to ask if there was a different direction he could take the build in. In true supercar owner style, Ng merely asked him to get the numbers together. It turns out Ayyagari had something one-of-a-kind in mind, reaching out to some contacts of his who race Audi R8 LMS professionally, and eventually speaking to some Audi race team engineers to see if it were possible to get some spares for the R8 he had sitting in his shop. “They got back to me and told me what I’d need, what I should get, and how much it would cost,” Ayyagari recalls. “It was wildly expensive, but we decided to go forward with it.” Soon, Audisport LMS dry carbon fiber widebody pieces started showing up at the shop, made in different facilities, years, and some even used in races, in order to complete a full set. Mounting the front and rear bumper, splitter, diffuser, hood, side skirts, rocker panels, quarter panels, fenders, hatch and wing, which slots through the trunk and mounts directly to the frame, Ayyagari had already mocked up the ducting for the cooling system before realizing that something was amiss. The radiator setup on the R8 for the street and the one for the track are very different, and keeping the

I STILL REMEMBER THE DAY I CUT THE CENTER OF THE mounting it weren’t available, so FRAME OUT – IT WAS REALLY SCARY.” I had to fabricate this elaborate

stock cooling system wouldn’t work with the LMS kit. On an off-the-lot Audi R8, the radiators sit on the left and right sides, just below the headlights. An upper radiator core support bar runs laterally between the frame rails that’s pretty much there for mounting the bumper, and then a lower support bar, which is a structural component to the frame, runs below. On the racecar, that’s all been eliminated, the structural lower support bar has been cut out and replaced with a slightly thinner,
bolt-in Audisport counterpart, and the rad now sits in a v-mount in the middle. Pair that with the fact that there’s no such thing as an “R8 LMS cooling conversion kit,” meaning that the UAD crew would need to fabricate all the radiator piping from the front compartment to the engine, and it’s no wonder Ayyagari lists that job as the most challenging he’s ever done. “There’s a huge, 14-inch, super-thin SPAL pusher fan that sits below the radiator, inside the v-mount, and the brackets for
stainless steel cage that the radiator sits in, on top of the v-mount,” he recalls, finding some humor in it now. “After that was in there, I had to cut the frame, drop the radiator mount in, and then set the rivnuts. I had never done anything that crazy before. I still remember the day I cut the center of the frame out – it was really scary.” With the cooling system finally working, the suspension in, and the car literally firing on all cylinders, the team at UAD received more good news with some recognition from Yokohama Wheels in the form of an invitation to sit at their booth at SEMA. As visions of the R8 on Advan GTs in Vegas danced in their heads, it was decided to take the performance of the car up another level, so Ayyagari reached out to CFI Designs, as they’re known for their twin-turbo setups for R8s and Gallardos. Touting a new turbo kit with a custom center-exit exhaust, pushing 580 wheel-horsepower and some very nice noises, while sitting pretty on Advan GTs in GTR-spec, measuring in at 20x10 in the front (miraculously stretching
a 235/30 over it) and 21x12 in the rear, the LMS streetcar was game for the big show, having only one little hiccup on the way out the door. “My friend that owns the transport company brought his trailer and his truck, but the Audi was too wide to get inside,” Ayyagari chuckles. “He had to go back and get his semi-truck so he could get it to Vegas!” Coming home from Vegas the darling of every attendee’s Instagram account, the R8 was soon back in the shop to get some

finishing touches before Ng comes to finally pick her up for the summer. Yes, the car looks like a racecar, but it’ll be driven on the road, and as such needs some creature comforts, like an audio system fit for an all-carbon Audi. Really, the only thing that goes with carbon is more carbon, so Ayyagari sourced Illusion Audio’s Carbon Series component speakers and subs, and paired them with two of Mosconi’s smallest amplifiers, which are mounted under the passenger seat. The Mosconi D2 100.4DSP features six channels of built-in DSP and runs 100 watts by four channels to the Illusion C6 components, while the D2 monoblock powers the C10 sub with 500 watts of clean power. “I was really impressed with how lightweight they are,” Ayyagari says of the speakers. “Having the magnet on the front makes them really versatile, as far as the mounting depth. I was able to create a direct bolt-in baffle for the doors that picks up on all the factory bolt points, so there’s no drilling or cutting, and then added its own drilled mounting points for the speaker basket. It’s super clean.” After almost exactly four years, the Audi will be taking some time off and vacationing with Ng for car show and track season in Vancouver. When winter hits, it’ll be back to UAD for a custom interior and a splash of paint before it can really be called complete. In the meantime, the car that was only supposed to be in for some wheels, suspension, and a body kit, but came out on the other side as a racecar for the street will be out and cruising to meets or back and forth to the track, so if you’re car-spotting in BC, keep an eye out to catch it as it blows past.

It’s a beautiful thing when the world of high society exotics and tuner culture meet, and when it comes to Allen Wasko’s twin-turbo Liberty Walk Gallardo, the two worlds come together in perfect, awe-inspiring harmony.
ike many people who own dream supercars, Wasko’s love for Lamborghinis started long before taking ownership, but he’s no stranger to high performance V10 engines. Previous to the Gallardo you see here, Wasko owned a Dodge Viper, a bona fide widow-maker in its

own right, and that is just one of a few previous muscle icons in his garage. In addition to the Viper, he had some minor modification experience with a Z06 Corvette and a Foose Mustang. In 2015, it was time to put his muscle days behind him and finally realize his exotic dream. He pulled the trigger and purchased the Gallardo with a
smile on his face. For a large amount of exotic owners, that is where the story would end. They would sign the dotted line, climb into their dream car, and drive off into the sunset, visiting the dealership periodically for scheduled maintenance. Thankfully for us, Wasko is not your typical exotic owner. After seeing

the guys at Optimus Performance in Fort Myers build their first Liberty Walk Lamborghini, his whole world was flipped upside down. He knew that the minor modification experience he had with previous cars hadn’t prepared him for what was coming next, but there was no stopping it now. He had to go all out with this car. It wasn’t long after catching widebody fever that the completely stock, bright yellow Lamborghini Gallardo was completely stripped down at Optimus Performance.
In-house paint legend Will Alecia, commonly known as “Wet Willie” went to work, painting the car a stunning Ultrasonic Blue Mica with a subtle pink pearl beneath the surface. The paint is somewhat similar in tone to a factory option blue, but much deeper and multidimensional thanks to the pearlescent effect, which really pops in the right light. Wet Willie clearly knows what he’s doing in the booth. In preparation for the Liberty Walk kit, Wasko and the crew at Optimus Performance decided

that an air ride system would be ideal for both fitment and overall cool factor. To do this properly, they went with the best in the business. A custom bag-over-strut setup from Universal Air makes up the actual air bag section, and a full Accuair system with E-level takes care of air management and functionality. The front hood storage compartment in the Gallardo isn’t typically large enough for mass practical storage, but it does happen to be the perfect size to conceal a beautiful air tank setup with hard lines. From there, it was finally time to bring Wasko’s Lamborghini to the same level as the one that made him fall in love. Installing a wide body kit as intricate as the Liberty Walk Gallardo kit can be daunting, as it requires a bit of finesse to get things fitting just right. Thankfully, the guys at Optimus Performance have experience in this department, having built the first complete Liberty Walk Gallardo in the United States – the very same one that won Wasko over. Installation went as smoothly as the lines on the kit’s extra-wide fender flares, and the kit’s fitment could not be better. Once the air suspension was functional, the kit installed seamlessly, and the stunning paint given its final clear coat, the build began to take shape. To complete the look without going overboard, Wasko wanted to find the perfect set of wheels to compliment the lines of the Liberty Walk kit and the color of Wet Willie’s deep blue paint job. Enter Rotiform and their desire to meet the custom needs of every customer. Some of you may be familiar with Rotiform’s three-piece forged VDA wheel. That very wheel design was prototyped on Wasko’s car, and it turned out to be the perfect coup de grâce to finish off the Gallardo’s design. The star-shaped design makes this car look ready for the big screen – and that’s just where it ended up. We’ll come back to that in a minute. With air suspension, a widebody kit, custom pearlescent paint, and bespoke wheels from one of the biggest names in the industry, all on an exotic European car, one might make the mistake of assuming this Gallardo is some sort of show-dates-only trailer queen, but that couldn’t be further from the
truth. Around the back, the once near-opaque rear grille has been replaced with a transparent peeka-boo window, showing off two CT43X triple-ball-bearing turbochargers from Competition Turbo, wrapped in DEI turbo blankets, presumably to prevent the melting of the aforementioned window. The Competition Turbo system was built and tuned in-house at Optimus Performance by the mastermind Michael Randles. Vibrant Performance took care of the system’s piping needs for maximum uninterrupted air flow to and from

SOME OF YOU MAY BE FAMILIAR WITH ROTIFORM’S THREE-PIECE FORGED VDA WHEEL. THAT VERY WHEEL DESIGN WAS PROTOTYPED ON WASKO’S CAR, AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE PERFECT COUP DE GRÂCE TO FINISH OFF THE GALLARDO’S DESIGN.

the turbochargers, and a Haltech ECU piggybacks off of an SAFC to keep things running smoothly throughout, as well as to monitor performance, temperatures, and boost levels. The nice thing about the high-output V10 in the Gallardo is that you can opt for reliability by running low boost, and still make big power. The Competition Turbo setup operates at 6 PSI, but that’s enough to push power from the Gallardo’s factory 500 to an ample 700-plus horsepower – perfect for those wide-open, sun-soaked Florida highways. I mentioned before that the car was headed for the big screen. Some of our readers who were watching closely during The Fate of the Furious may already recognize Wasko’s ride as one of the only cars seen driving in the iconic movie scene in which the Fast & Furious heroes enter a government impound garage full of modified cars. When the opportunity presented itself, Wasko didn’t hesitate. The only thing left to complete this tuner’s dream was to be featured in the film series that started it all for so many others like him. The car was
a huge hit on the set in Atlanta, even with the film’s director. The journey from a bone stock, bright yellow Gallardo with 12,000 miles on the odometer, to a showstopping, twin-turbocharged, prim and proper widebody exotic sounds like it could take years, but the experienced team at Optimus Performance helped Wasko streamline the process in order to get his car into SEMA 2016. In just three months, long before the Fast & Furious movie hit the big screen, the car became one of SEMA’s most talked about rides, positioned just outside the Las Vegas Convention Center’s main lobby entrance. Allen Wasko is truly living the dream.
