ISSUE PREVIEW

Euro in For A Treat

I

'd just like to start off by profusely apologizing for that title pun. I have this problem where I think I’m hilarious. Anyway… Welcome to PASMAG’s August/September issue, which we’ve added a nice Euro twist to. It’s that time of the year when the largest Euro shows are coming out strong, so we figu ed we’d do the same. Our front-running columnists kick off the issue. Take a tour of the infamous Japanese auctions with Mr. Zillin, have Garry Springgay tell you whether you really need all that DSP in your sound system, follow the Instragram famous (he told us to put that) Rob Kochis as he turns his showgoer into an actual goer, and get filled in y drift master Leveton about one of the guys on the FD grid with the biggest heart – Jeff

Jones. That’s just the beginning! In our Trending section, you’ll find n w Euro-themed updates and product guides, a mini-feature on one of our new additions’ Audi A3, and you might even spot yourself in our Spotted event coverage. Our featured event for this issue is Fitted 2016 in its seventh year of operation. Take notes, because these guys are pushing the envelope when it comes to aggressive fitment. You’ll also catch our latest batch of #TBGLIVE Winners further into the issue. Somehow, Garry Springgay also has time to do reviews for us every issue. We’re convinced he’s got a clone, or at least a robot assistant. This time, he takes a look at the Memphis MOJO 6 woofer and the Sony MEX-M100BT marine head unit. Our feature roster is pretty

impressive, if we do say so ourselves. Taking the cover spot is Don Santora’s wide Mk5 GTI. The addition of the GT wing and some other fresh updates to what was already a stellar car made that decision a no-brainer. Those images you’ve seen of him parked up on the train tracks pretty much sealed the deal. Santora’s feature is bolstered by the outstanding Sarto Racing widebody CLK55 AMG from Roland Gotingco, and Chelsea DeNofa’s drift beast E46 Bimmer. Check out the stories from these very passionate owners and builders. We’ll wrap it up with an August/September event listing so you don’t miss out, as well as

another instalment of Spot the Differences. Play along and win some gear from us! Thanks so much for picking us up! We hope you enjoy the issue. Euro so awesome (I’m so sorry). Get in touch with me through editor@pasmag if you want to show me something, or tell me off for my Euro puns. Enjoy!

JAPANESE AUCTIONS: THE ULTIMATE CAR SAFARI STORY BY

By Adam Zillin

The Japanese vehicle auctions should be considered an interplanetary statistical anomaly. “How and why the hell do they even exist?” I can hear you asking.

Y

ou may have known about them for decades, but the Japanese car auction system defies common sense, eschewing rationality. And yet they are 100-percent commonplace. It happens because this is the Japanese way. Japan possesses the capability to cultivate and then process cultural “Unobtanium” and the social need to buy and sell cars springs from the necessity within Japan’s need to “recycle." The Japanese are, at heart, structured to dispose of the old and usher in the new at regular

intervals and are the predominant and factually omnipotent “all seeing eye” that pervades virtually every car sale in Japan outside private purchasing and Yahoo auction sales. There are no dodgy Craigslist posts. There are no Saturday afternoon booty calls to come visit and go for a test drive. In Japan, documentation is an absolute and privacy is everything; without either, you can’t even buy a car, let alone put one to market. Japan is safe on the prevention of vehicular theft and the notion that cars trade hands illegally.

None of the mystique the auctions embody has been purged. The sheer experience of attending a Japanese auction at full-tilt on any given Thursday is an all-out assault on the senses that will render you speechless. Irrelevant of your particular slant, your eyes would water freely if you saw what the gates contained. Just recently, I was reduced to a crying mess of human blubber over a pair of E30 M3 BMWs, that to my trained eye, were in perfect form and embodied equal measures of childhood and fantasy at the same time. To see them

fall under the hammer just outside my reach was devastating. I shed a manly tear over lost opportunity, but I know where they have gone. The next time, they will not be missed. Isn't that why we love cars? The “ether” I speak of on why Japan buys and sells on a daily basis may need some quantifying, but it is easily qualified. Every week, the USS Tokyo auction harbors up to 15,000 cars. You can name it, and the likelihood of it being there is significant. Think about that. Every single week, running for the last 30 years, there are up to 15,000 cars going under the hammer at 30-second intervals in Tokyo. Week in, week out. For me, as a member of the system, it is either a kill or be killed. The market is fierce and full of various predators, so you take what you can for yourself or your valued clientele. Just recently, the prices of R34 GT-Rs have absolutely exploded in value to the point where they have, overnight, become “Unobtanium” for 99 percent of the populace. What was $40,000 in 2014 is now something else. Case in point being an R34 V-Spec II Nur with 5,500 km on the clock that went through recently. It sold for $150,000. Ten years before, you could have it. What I am trying to impart is that the vehicle auction system itself is a clear reflection of Japan as a whole, reflecting what supply and demand truly is. That “tip of the iceberg;” the people manning the Titanic, as the story goes, indicates there was a lot

more going on underneath. Being a registered purveyor of the finest cars to go through this system, I am constantly at odds with myself. Clients have requests which need to be met and on those purchases only one thing matters; their needs. But the redlining enthusiast in me screams to walk away with absolutely everything in sight. You, my dear PASMAG reader, would literally be stepping into a literal, vehicular set of a virtual reality Jurassic park tour with your mouth agape and salivating; constantly struggling to form a complete sentence the entire ride. No matter where you look, there are wild untamed beasts roaming the fields in this wonderland only the “chosen” have ever given a special few access to inside normal channels. Luckily for you, I have a few keys at my disposal and can help navigate your journey, so you only need ask for me adam@7tune.com when the time comes to find that elusive beast you’re looking to capture.

DO YOU REALLY NEED DSP IN YOUR AUDIO SYSTEM?

Lately it seems like every other audio product I touch has DSP in it in one form or another. My car stereo, my home receiver, my motorcycle’s radio, my in-helmet audio system, my clock radio, my smartphone, my computer, hell even the little iPod I take to the gym has DSP in it. DSP or Digital Signal Processing is invading our audio products, and I’m here to tell you that it’s not always for the better.

P

urity is a good thing, and you can seriously screw up a potentially good sounding system with DSP if you don’t know what you’re doing. Go and talk to any real audiophile and ask them if they have any DSP in their system. The answer (after they stare at you to see if you’re actually serious) will be no. There is an old audiophile quote that a perfect amplifier would be “a straight piece of wire with gain.” So why in the hell does every product we touch include some form of DSP? I believe it is for no better reason than it’s easy to do, since the chips have already been developed, and many products include the DSP functions simply to check off a ox on a list of features that competitive products have. Now don’t get me wrong, I think a good DSP processor can be a key element in an exceptional sounding system. In fact, my Corvette Grand Sport uses the excellent Arc Audio PS8 DSP, and without it the car just wouldn’t sound as good as it does. That is, after about 30 hours of tuning and critical listening. It can totally be a good thing, but the adjustments

22

PASMAG

PAS138_SoundAdvice.indd 1

must be done by a trained professional with enough time and experience to get things right. That said, obviously I have nothing against using the digital realm to manipulate audio signals when it’s done for good reason and done properly, but trying to get a two-inch clock radio speaker to sound like a concert hall simply isn’t a good reason. Alright, so rather than tell you how to use something to make your sound better, in this column I’m going to tell you what to leave alone to keep from ruining what you have. As an example, I temporarily installed a DSP-powered preamp in my listening room and ran its output through a studio-grade amplifier to a pair of Focal bookshelf speakers and an Audiomobile 12-inch woofer. With my standard (non-DSP) audiophile preamp, this system has exceptional sound quality and amazing stereo imaging. It is also very linear, meaning there is no emphasis on any particular segment of the audio band, regardless of volume. I connected the new preamp into my system and with everything set flat and a minimal of

digital aids, the system continued to sound very good. Okay, so far so good. Now let’s begin by messing with the obvious menu, DSP Soundfield. The preamp has settings for “Jazz,” “Rock,” “Concert Hall,” and “Night Club.” Mercifully, it also has “Off,” which is the one I vastly preferred. As I selected the various “Soundfields” I could sort of hear the intended effect occasionally, but mostly the sound got weird and out of phase sounding. I lost my stereo image, and stuff ust generally sounded odd. The Jazz and Night Club settings seemed to add excessive EQ to the middle and bottom end, and there went my system’s beloved linearity. And the Concert Hall was the strangest of them all, with lots of echo and very artificial sounding reverb. And while I always thought I’d love to hear Led Zeppelin in a concert hall, it turns out that I wouldn’t. Moving on to other DSP powered functions, I found a 12-band, quasiparametric EQ, digital delays for each channel and adjustable crossovers with variable frequency and slope. The amount of adjustability and the vastness of opportunities to completely screw up everything were almost limitless. Even if you had a background in audio, and had some experience tuning it would have taken a week of experimenting to figure out that for the most part, simply leaving everything off ounded best. The bottom line is this, car audio is no different. We have the same sort of digitally processed options and abilities in way too many car audio source units, processors and gizmos, and the list of such gear is getting longer by the day. And in the car, these digital “enhancements” can be even more bewildering and odd sounding. Kind of like the time a guy I know spent four hours trying to remove the reverb from his system by adjusting channel delay and EQ, only to have his daughter come along and turn the “Cathedral” DSP setting off. But I will leave that and other equally as sordid stories for another time, and instead leave you with this basic premise: “Friends don’t let friends use poor DSP.”

STAY CRUSHING stay_crushing

@staycrushing

staycrushing

MY FRIEND HECTOR SWAPPED THE DIFF OUT FOR ME WHILE I WAS STUCK AT WORK. YOU'RE A BEAST, DUDE!

WHAT'S THE DIFF? Welcome back to another instalment of Stay Crushing, where I’ve been slowly but surely turning my hard-parked Scion FR-S into a track car.

A

couple weeks ago, I brought my diff back to my friend, Ray, to adjust the backlash and start the rebuild on the damn thing. Ray is an OG hachi-roku dude and runs KaaZ USA, a manufacturer of high performance clutch-type limited-slip differentials. He was also one of the reasons as to why I’m ditching the “show-only” mentality. We started with a KaaZ 1.5-way LSD that was developed just for the FR-S. It’s aggressive, but not too aggressive to the point where the car is constantly sliding out and almost uncontrollable. It’s also pretty quiet for a clutch-type LSD. Even with the one-piece driveshaft, beefier axles and the subframe/diff isers, it’s not too loud at all, which I’m actually really surprised about. When I had my S13 and did the solid subframe inserts, my old diff lunked horribly. The next part was changing the gearing of the car. The FR-S, although it’s lightweight and nimble, isn’t as rev-happy as it should be. For some reason, with my driving

24

PASMAG

style, I always find myself either at redline in a turn, or in the wrong spot of the powerband. It’s frustrating to not be able to find that sweet spot, especially when the Torsen diff pens back up as soon as the inside tire lifts. Not to mention the final drive, which I feel is just the wrong ratio for the car. To cure my issue, Moto Miwa of Club4AG helped me source a TRD 4.556 final drive and a Cusco solid pinion collar. This took care of the crappy gearing and got rid of the fail-prone pinion collar, which can smash and cause the final drive to chew itself to death from excessive play. Being supercharged, I didn’t realize how much of a drastic change this differential build would cause. The supercharger is one thing, but the nine-psi pump gas tune paired with all the extra tire and aero I have going on definitely left me wanting more. Once the final drive was in though, the car immediately changed. Being belt-driven and with shorter gearing, the boost came on much sooner and the car felt full of life.

When exiting out of turns, I was able to smash the gas and get the rear end to lock and rotate over. It felt like a whole new car! No more Torsen diff nlocking mid-turn and causing the car to plow – now it’s point and go. R1 Concepts also hopped on board and managed to source me a front and rear big brake kit for this build. I went from a fourpiston front and single-piston rear, to a massive six-piston front and four-piston rear. I’m actually almost scared at how well these brakes stop, even with the semiaggressive pads that came with the kit, which is going to totally change my driving style. I’m really looking forward to improving my late braking and confidence behind the wheel! The next step will be a new fuel pump and E85 tune, as well as a smaller pulley. Look for that in the next issue to the next issue, where we’ll see what kind of new power I can make. I’ll even start to swap out the snakeskin and suede (don’t ask) inside the car to something more track oriented!

JACOB'S DRIFT Competition

jacobphoto.com JacobLevetonDrift

In motorsports, you’ll often hear stories of sacrifi e and heartbreak. Drivers who spend years working their way through the ranks on a nickel and dime budget, hours and hours spent on the road towing to and from events, all at the sliver of hope of making it ‘pro.’ Drifting is no different. While the path to professional drifting has become clearer in recent years, the number of drivers who are able to make a living from drifting is very minimal. Several of the top pros still hold regular jobs or operate shops to make a livable wage. Many drivers who make it to Formula D will only last two to four years before moving on to other ventures.

JEFF JONES:

HEART OF A CHAMPION

ooking back on the 13 seasons of Formula Drift, we’ve seen a lot of attrition. Only three drivers have competed at every event to date (Ken Gushi, Dai Yoshihara and Chris Forsberg), with a fourth having only missed one event (Vaughn Gittin Jr.). Even those who have previously won top honors as Rookie of the Year often only see a momentary increase in sponsorship. It’s widely discussed that Formula Drift is the best of the best, and the number of drivers commuting from foreign countries to compete in the series clearly shows just how highly regarded

Jacob Leveton & David Karey

the competition is. Having any staying power in Formula Drift is very difficult to do.

Enter Jeff Jones.

The 2009 rookie class contained many notable names. Eric O’Sullivan came over from Ireland to take Rookie of the Year honors, while drivers like Michael Essa, Kazuhiro Ueo, Matt Powers, and Dean Kearney all went on to see podium victories in the years since their debut. Buried in that rookie class, a driver named Jeff Jones had years of experience cutting his teeth at the local Just Drift events in Southern California. Jones had been a mainstay

AUGUST // SEPTEMBER 2016

PAS_2016_Aug-Sept_138_Jacobs_Drift.indd 1

2016-06-14 3:35 PM

in the local drifting scene, attending nearly every event within driving distance of his Sun Valley, California residence. His 1JZ-powered S13 was reliable, but clearly underpowered. He didn’t make much of an impact in his first year, but decided to stick with it. In 2010, Jeff ones found a ride in a 20B-powered Mazda FD3S RX7 through a local shop called Rotary Works, and even made a few Top 32 tandem appearances. Rotary Works would move on, but Jeff ones would return in 2011 back in his personal S13 car, towing it on an open trailer with his mid-90s Chevy pickup. For 2012, Jones built a new V8-powered S14 with title sponsorship from CX Racing. That same S14 chassis is the one he still competes in today, five seasons later. When Formula D introduced the Pro2 class, Jones became a mainstay. Over the past three seasons, Jones is the only driver who has driven at every Pro2 event. With a crew of friends and a spare parts bin that is mostly sourced from junkyards, Jones has outlasted drivers with double or triple the budget, and often just as much of a horsepower advantage. While big budgets can buy brand new flashy parts and impressive tow rigs and pit setups, they don’t guarantee longevity. To date, Jones has won two Pro 2 events and podiumed at 4

others, meaning he has earned a podium at six of the seven Pro2 events he has attended. Earlier this year, Jeff ones faced Justin Pawlak in a Top 32 tandem battle. Many fans felt that Jones would likely be sitting on the sidelines for the Top 16 opening ceremony. However, Jones laid down two solid passes, while Pawlak had shallow angle and many steering corrections following on the partially wet course. Judges noted the mistakes and handed Jones the tandem win, announcing his name in front of his hometown crowd. At the time, Jones didn’t even have a tire sponsor (he has since picked up Nexen Tire). In 2016, Jones has already taken home an event win and a second place finish in Pro2. A new

partnership with Doc X beverage has helped him confirm his budget for the season, while he’s working on a new website called DriftHacks.com that will help up-and-coming drivers make the most of their drift cars on a budget. Jones also spends time tutoring those who want to learn how to drift at various tracks around Southern California. For those looking for inspiration to make it as a professional driver, names like Chris Forsberg and Vaughn Gittin Jr. are likely to come up way before Jeff ones. But when it comes to being humble while still being able to build a career around the motorsport of drifting, Jeff ones should be a name people look towards moving forward.

APR GREECE’S SCIROCCO GT24 It might surprise some readers to learn that APR has a branch in Greece, but they do, and that’s not the end of the surprises. Last November, the Greek APR division began working on their latest project, the Scirocco GT24. The Scirocco, which experienced its competition debut in GT24 form before its production counterpart hit the consumer market in 2008, was the subject of a transformation inside-and-out. At first lance, the car looks wild. Bright red accents adorn the otherwise black and gray APR livery and color-scheme, and the same red fi ls the dish and lip of the equipped Vossen CV7s. Even the lettering of

30

the Vossen center-caps is fi led in red. The Scirocco’s form is made even more striking with the liberal application of carbon fiber around the body kit, as well as with the help of big, aggressive spoilers in the front and rear. Step inside the stripped-down cockpit of this 24-hour racing machine, and you’re met with a continuation of the livery’s theme with a bright red roll cage and

similarly colored racing harnesses. The interior has been shaved down of all excess, save for the dashboard, and fi ted with OMP racing seats. All of that saved weight becomes even more potent when you tally up all of the performance add-ons. Bumping the power output to a respectable 377 horsepower with matching torque is a collaborative effort between APR’s stage 2 intake, cast downpipe, an advanced intercooler and their K04 ECU. Truly a work of art, this Scirocco GT24 may be the best thing to come out of Greece since democracy itself.

more like a fi earm than a sports car to most people, but for those in the know, this name might trigger memories of a forgotten concept of the late 1980s. Some readers may even remember our double feature on the world’s only pair of G60s from last year’s Euro issue. It all started when Volkswagen commissioned Marold Automobili GmbH to turn their flagship of the time, the Corrado coupe, into a shooting brake model. It wasn’t long before Marold churned out two of them, powered by the supercharged G60 four-cylinder engine, which boasted 158 horsepower. It may not sound like much today, but back then, this was pretty respectable power. Each one was fitted with Borbet rims, one a five-spoke design, and the other a mesh design similar to some modern day BBS wheels. The original plan was to follow up the prototypes with a limited production run of the boxy hatchback, but for whatever reason (presumably because a hatchback version of a sports car based on a hatchback seemed kind of redundant) it was never given the green light. Instead, the pair spent a considerable amount of time in Germany until they were purchased in 2007. Seven years later, in 2014, the owner from the Netherlands managed to get the cars onto American soil, and into the hands of LuxSport Motor Group in Long Island. The dealer is offering the pair for a cool $50,000 each, so if you want to own a piece of European automotive history, you had better gather your spare change.

PASMAG’s newest team member has one cool Audi STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM GORDON

The collective car stables of the PASMAG office gained yet another vehicle with the addition of our newest employee. It is with great pride we introduce our newest team member, Kevin Tay, and his awesome Audi A3 Quattro. He chose the Audi as his firs project car because he wanted something different than the typical show tuner. Built partially in his own shop, Team RimRim’s Specialty Garage, Tay’s A3 has been taken a step above your average streetdriven Audi. One look at the Gloss Black Rose exterior and you know this is a tuner’s car. This color is subtle, but it makes the car stand out from all angles, albeit

His AG F141 wheels feature a mesh-style Techa Titanium face surrounded by an attentiongrabbing Mirror Bronze lip, which looks even better than usual in the sunlight. Adding the

finishing ouches to the wheels’ spec is a batch of 24-karat gold hardware and center caps, a perfect match for the Audi’s color scheme. Assisting in the tucking of the wheels behind the fenders is an AirLift Auto Pilot V2 system which, when paired with the Megan Racing rear camber arms, allows for maximum lowness and a show-ready stance. The custom trunk setup cleanly tucks the air tank up against the rear seats, leaving room for practicality and cargo transport even with the 10-inch JL subwoofers on either side. isn’t just for show. Under the hood sits a custom one-off turbo ystem designed and built by Eurocharged Canada, one of Ontario’s premier European car tuners. The turbo system utilizes a Precision Turbo 5558 turbocharger and a custom intake system to make a healthy 460 horsepower at all wheels. These 460 horses scream at high revs thanks to a custom stainless 3-inch turbo-back straight pipe and screamer pipe fed by a custom exhaust manifold which was also fabricated by Eurocharged. With Audi’s Quattro system in play, this all equates to a pretty quick launch and impressive all-around performance. Tay explains his ‘stance’ on the car’s combination of form and function setup. “I was never a stance guy. I slowly grew into that scene; however, performance still is my priority. I have tracked it a few times prior to my setup with my new wheels, and I’ve loved every second of it. Now I have an in-between car, mostly geared towards show, but it can defini ely handle its own on the track!” No compromise. We like it. In closing, Kevin thanks the inspiring people behind his build, extending special thanks to his team, NextLevel car club, his girlfriend Nicole for the constant support, and two of his best friends: Sawm for helping him find his inner ar enthusiast, and Walid for the support and wrap idea. “This scene wouldn’t be what it is today without friends, family and teams. We spend sleepless nights getting our cars ready to show off at sh ws. We build them for ourselves, however at the end of the day what I enjoy most is sharing the memories with friends who I now call family.”

Welcome to the family, Kevin!

M2002 BMW’S 2002 HOMAGE

At the 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, fans of the classic BMW 02 series - more specifically the 2002 Turbo model - were treated to the reveal of a modern rendition of the classic chassis. It has been 50 long years since the iconic and timeless 02 series kicked off a ew era for the BMW brand, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate its anniversary than a radically reimagined homage concept. The one-off oncept was built by BMW on the chassis of a current-gen M2 as a way of celebrating the engineering feats of the 2002 Turbo by way of a design study. The modern iteration of the 1973 classic, simply dubbed the “BMW 2002 Homage”, features several styling cues reminiscent of the original, such as its shark-like silhouette, dramatic wheel arches, low ride height, compact proportions over a long wheelbase, and even a carbon band that wraps around the car in place of the classic’s signature chrome shoulderline that visually separated the body into two sections. Modern touches are present as well. The rear lights, which take inspiration from the 2002’s squared rear end, are LED lights now, and are tucked behind a contemporary black-panel glass. The lights are only visible when illuminated, as the black glass becomes a stylishly unbroken, opaque surface without the LED backlighting. Milled, multi-spoke, 20-inch wheels are intended to invoke the feel of racing wheels from years past in their two-tone, dual-layer design, which barely hide a set of gold, M-stamped brake calipers. Aerodynamics catch up to the 21st century as well with the help of an extended front splitter, large ducktail spoiler and air channels through the fenders made to optimize air flow and maximize downforce. Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles lends some insight into the design language: “The eye-catching design of the BMW 2002 Homage employs a very dynamic, striking use of forms for its own take on what is, for me, one of the most iconic vehicles in BMW history. At the same time, it encapsulates BMW’s major motor sport triumphs, which were made possible by turbo technology. As such, the Homage car brings together the past and future of BMW into a confident statement of unadulterated driving joy.”

f you’re truly serious about pounding out the bass, then you already know when it comes to choosing your subwoofers you want a no compromise, truly high performance woofer than can handle the abuse it’s likely to see on a typical Saturday night. The folks at Memphis Car Audio know this as well, and to that end, they have developed the all-new MOJO 6 series of subwoofers. With a marketing slogan of “Bigger, Louder, Stronger” the MOJO 6 woofers are the cream of the Memphis crop. Designed from the get-go as very high power handling woofers, they are specificall designed to sound great, play loud, and most importantly, handle the power of a serious ground pounding system. The MOJO 6 series of woofers are available in 12- or 15-inch diameters, and all feature either dual two- or four-ohm voice

coil configurations. or this review, we’re going to put the MOJO 612D2 through the paces here in the lab and see how it stacks up.

Features When the MOJO 612D2 arrived, I knew as soon as I picked up the box that this was no ordinary woofer. This is an exceptionally ruggedly-built woofer, tipping the scale at 33 pounds! It’s rated at 1,500 watts continuous power and 3,000 watts peak, and after unpacking it and examining how it’s made, I have no doubt those power numbers are very real. Looking at the front side of the woofer, the fi st thing that catches your eye is the full diameter woven fiberglass dus cap that completely covers the entire surface of the pressed paper/fiber con underneath. The fiberglass dustcap is an inverted parabolic shape, and is used to increase the strength

and rigidity of the cone assembly. It also looks really cool. A tasteful oval orange badge lets everyone know this is a MOJO woofer, and a rubber gasket trims out the mounting area and doubles as a sealing gasket to the surface of the enclosure. Built on a heavy duty custom tooled cast aluminum basket with machined “diamond cut” Memphis logos on all four spokes, the look is of a high quality, all business basket. Providing the magnetic energy to move the coils in the gap is the job of a massive double-stacked ferrite motor assembly measuring over 7.5 inches in diameter and weighing 235 ounces. Keeping a woofer designed to handle two horsepower cool is no easy feat, and to that end, the MOJO612D2 is designed to move a lot of air through the pole piece’s 32mm vented diameter. The area between the motor’s top plate

and the underside of the spider is liberally vented as well, with large ports cast into the basket assembly, which is protected from foreign objects by orange colored mesh panels. The cone/dustcap assembly is connected with both adhesive and orange stitching to a tall butyl rubber surround that provides suspension compliance assistance and also is designed for very high excursion values. A closer inspection of the business end of the woofer revealed a Nomex linear-type spider assembly. The spider is used to control suspension compliance and to locate the voice coil former in the motor’s magnetic gap. The specially designed heat resistant spider also provides a secure location for the two sets of wovenin-place tinsel leads. As a nice bit of attention to detail, the initial length of the tinsel leads from the terminals to the spider are covered

TEST REPORT Memphis MOJO 612D2 in color-coded heat shrink, making positive and negative terminal identification that much easie . The speaker terminals are spring-loaded and nickel-plated and will accept up to 10-gauge wire. Because of the amount of heat dissipation that comes into play at these power levels, the material the terminals mount to is formed from a synthetic material that will withstand high temperatures for extended periods. The electrical signal passes through the terminals and tinsel leads to a pair of four-layer copper voice coils, which are treated with a special high temperature coil varnish and wound onto a three-inch aluminum former. The copper coils and aluminum former work together to improve heat dissipation and ensure reliability at high power levels for extended periods.

Listening When it came time to listen to this woofer, I chose a 2,500-watt Crown Macro Tech amplifier o drive it to see if I could explore the woofer’s

limits a bit. I also knew that since I was in control of the volume knob, the woofer wasn’t going to be subjected to clipped signals and other abuse, so going a bit over the rated power level would be fine I loaded the big Memphis woofer into a 1.75-cubic-foot sealed enclosure, which gave very good results. For you SPL-oriented bass heads, Memphis suggests a 2.8-cubic-foot vented enclosure tuned to about 40 Hz, which I believe will be just about perfect for those who simply love it loud. One important note when using a vented enclosure at these sorts of power levels, a properly tuned subsonic fil er is critical to making sure the woofer does not “unload” below the enclosure’s tuned frequency. I focused my listening session on the performance of the woofer in the sealed box, and came away thoroughly impressed. The woofer exhibits real authority in the output. I played a wide variety of music, from Donald Fagen to the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and the MOJO 612D2 woofer performed admirably

regardless of the music, revealing excellent low extension and superb control. The bass in Thom Rotella’s Friends is tight, musical and exceptionally well defined while extended bass notes, like those heard in Billy Idol’s Prodigal Son, come through with serious authority. Another thing I like about the MOJO

woofer is the lack of unwanted higher frequency output, which many times requires very steep crossover fil ers or lower crossover frequencies to remove. With the MOJO612D2, I can set the amp’s second order fil er to 80 Hz or even 100 Hz without excessive high frequency output. This characteristic is instrumental in get-

Every once in a while, a product crosses my bench that I’m genuinely impressed with and is a pleasure to evaluate. The Memphis MOJO 612D2 is just such a product. This woofer manages to cover all the bases, with outstanding sonics, reasonable enclosure requirements, awesome power handling, and a high quality look and feel. If you are thinking about becoming the guy with the coolest woofer system on the block, do yourself a favor and check out the Memphis MOJO series of subs. As good as the 12 was, I’m told the 15s are even more awesome with a jump in power handling up to 2,200 watts RMS!

Sony MEX-M100BT Marine Receiver Review

Full featured at a reasonable price point, Sony's marine head unit makes for a great first mate.

H

ere at PASMAG we understand that our readers want high performance audio everywhere they go, so to that end, we are going to take a look at a rugged, new source unit from Sony. Although you could certainly use it in your car or truck, the MEX-M100BT ($299.99 USD) was primarily conceived as a CD receiver for marine use, but it could also be pressed into duty in an off-roader, sand rail, motorcycle, or just about anywhere else you need a great music source.

Features Designed for outdoor usage, the MEX-M100BT uses a special UV-resistant finish so i s good looks will last, even after hundreds of hours in the sun. The same sort of attention to detail has also been applied to the inner workings. The printed circuit boards inside use a special anti-corrosion coating to protect them and the integrated circuits from humidity and salt water.

54

PASMAG

The basic features include an AM/FM tuner, CD, and playback of all the usual digital formats (MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC and FLAC). Bluetooth hands-free calling (mic included) and audio streaming are provided, as well as compatibility with Sony’s SongPal app. SongPal is a dedicated application for controlling various compatible audio devices. With the SongPal app, you can browse and play your devices contents via Bluetooth. The app also provides streaming of services such as Pandora, Spotify, Deezer and TuneIn Radio. Another cool SongPal function is the ability to use voice control of basic functions (only available through Android). You can get navigation directions, search for music, hear and compose text messages, just to name a few. The Sony unit is also ready to connect to an optional SiriusXM tuner for those who prefer satellite radio. Should you want your radios faceplate to pulse with your music, the MEX-M100BT comes with sound-

synchronized illumination. Utilizing beat-sensing technology, the LED lighting will flash with either SP or the back-beat of the music. The LED lighting color can be customized to any color you desire, with the button color set independently of the LCD display color. Siri Eyes Free is also available when paired with a supporting phone. Additional smartphone features include built-in control for iPhone, iPod and iPad devices, Pandora internet radio, plus Sony’s handy Quick-BrowZer and Jump Mode features. An MTP

(Media Transfer Protocol) MSC (Mass Storage Class) USB port is hidden on the front panel and has 1.5 amps of charge current. But what really sets the MEXM100BT apart from the competition is the built-in four-channel Class D amplifie , providing an honest 40 watts per channel of power, courtesy of some of the latest technology in Class D integrated circuit amplifie s.

Controls and Functionality The receiver is a single-DIN size chassis with a removable

The knob has a rubberized edge and good tactile feel. The volume knob also serves as a connection point for instant NFC Bluetooth and SongPal pairing; simply touch your phone to the knob and the connection is made automatically! For those who listen primarily to compressed digital files, the ME -M100BT is equipped with Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine or “DSEE” to improve the sound quality of those files. According o Sony engineers, any compressed digital file, regardless of type, is degraded as compared to the original. The degree of degradation depends on several factors

including the quality of the compressing, bandwidth, and the quality of the source. The engineers believe that much of the high frequency information is lost to compression, and the DSEE circuit is designed to restore the lost high frequencies, and restore the quality of the music to near CD quality. While DSEE is looking after the high frequency corrections, the MEXM100BT also has “Mega Bass” one-button equalization, which is designed to compensate for our ears’ inability to hear a flat r sponse at low volumes. The Mega Bass function provides about +6 dB of bass boost at 80 Hz, and about 2.5 dB of boost at 10 kHz. Boost at these specific frequencie coincide with something called the Fletcher-Munson curve, which is a loudness

contour for the human ear. Coincidence? I think not. If you need more adjustability, the MEX-M100BT has it built in with a 10band equalizer, adjustable crossovers that include three different slopes for the low pass, and easily adjusted delay for each channel that is often incorrectly referred to as time alignment. No one has yet figured out how to alter time. What it actually does is delay the sound from a specific channel or channels, thereby altering the arrival time of the sound from that channel at the ears of the intended listener. It’s really sound alignment. A front panel 3.5-mm auxiliary input allows connection of devices with a headphone output, and the level of this source is independently adjustable to

lan Phan built his Honda S2000 as a track weapon that still carried the aesthetics of a street-driven show car. His affinity or the Honda brand started with his old Acura RSX, a popular starting point for many Honda enthusiasts. He soon knew the S2000 was to be his future ride, and a few short years later, Phan has built his S2000 into a force to be reckoned with on the track. No build is without its challenges, and few have been on the receiving end of as much grief as Alan. “After the fi st month of owning the car, my F20C blew up on the way to storage,” recalls Phan, thinking back to the days when things just wouldn’t go his way. “The following summer at a track day the car caught on fire ” Of course, overcoming adversity is what separates the serious racers from the fair-

58

weather enthusiasts. This past summer, the car underwent a full respray in preparation for its rise to glory. Two years after starting the build, Phan has one seriously cool S2000, which makes plenty of power. With the help of a Kraftwerks V2 38-91 supercharger and other related go-fast goodies, power output is bumped up to a healthy 460 horsepower with 350 lb-ft of torque, which sounds pretty nice coming out of the J’s Racing 70RR exhaust. Those big tires and Spoon Sports brakes aren’t just for show, either. This hardtop Honda hits the track circuit on a regular basis. Aero and overall looks are improved thanks to a combination of Voltex, J’s Racing and Circuit Garage body parts, and the rear end receives an update with xPrototype LED taillights and a 1600mm swan-neck wing from Voltex. The white and black “Stormtrooper” look, which looks even better with the Lexus LFA Pearl White paint, works really well with this car, especially on the Volk TE37s. Phan extends his thanks to friends who helped him along the way, Nextmod for being able to rush his parts, as well as thanks to Lombardi Racing and Naizo Garage for installations and tunes.

hristopher Calimlim is the builder of a true showstopper. His 1998 Toyota Supra has only been on the streets of Honolulu, Hawaii, for three years, but since then, it has competed in 12 shows and has almost always landed in fi st place. “Besides displaying the pinnacle years of Toyota’s performance, nothing can match the iconic bodylines and legendary 2JZ-GTE motor from the fourth generation Supra,” says Calimlim. Pushing out 495 horsepower and 433 lb-ft of torque at 19 psi, while also creating an exclusive interior and exterior setup, Calimlim recalls the moment his intention of only making minor modifications changed “After a few months [of ownership] the stock sequential twin turbo system failed,” Calimlim explains. “For most it would be the worst feeling, but to me it was a blessing in disguise. We took out the stock turbos and replaced the system with a Boost Logic Stage 2 kit, utilizing

60

PASMAG

a single 6765 Precision turbo mated to a Greddy three-row radiator, Tial wastegate and blow-off valve, and a four-inch Boost Logic exhaust and down-pipe.” The Supra has gone through its share of different brands and parts, but there is one brand to which Calimlim has remained loyal throughout – Volk Racing. His fi st set were 18-inch GT7s, but that soon changed to a pair of 19-inch GT-Cs. The car currently sits on Volk’s new G50 wheels, also 19-inch. His favorite modification, on the other hand is the Air Force air suspension system. This is in part due to the constant road work, construction, and horribly designed parking lot structures around his town, as well as the ease of lowering the Supra while doing maintenance. Social media has become an integral part of getting your project out to the public’s eye, as evident through Tuner Battlegrounds, but only so many of those posts reach the influence s one would hope to contact. “Having famous people like Manabu Orido, Fredric Aasbø, or JJ Dubec approve of the car really means a lot to me,” Calimlim says. Calimlim shows no signs of slowing down with an abundance of additional modifications planed for the future, and from what we can only assume, plenty of more car shows to compete in.

ules Gabriel recalls being a youth in the Philippines when he caught a glimpse of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX cruising down the highway. That simple glimpse inevitably became a turning point in Gabriel’s life because it was that moment he decided nothing would get in the way of him owning his own. In September of 2014, all those years of grinding finally paid off in the orm of a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. “It inspired me to study and work hard so that I could afford one,” says Gabriel. “Now I still can’t believe that it happened, [which] just proves that nothing is impossible in this world.” He would then dedicate the following year to transforming the Evo X to his liking. Gabriel didn’t have much experience building in the past, excluding the basic bolt-on on a 2009 Lancer GT he later sold. That didn’t impede his vision because what he may have lacked in experience was ultimately redeemed by passion and creativity. With an estimated 319 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, there are subtle but unmistak-

able pieces helping to push that extra power and weight. Such examples are the K&N short ram intake and upper intercooler pipe, Greddy Ti-C four-inch cat-back exhaust with a burnt tip, Invidia four-inch down-pipe and test pipe, as well as an Exedy Stage 2 clutch and lightweight aluminum flywheel Presentation counts for something and that’s where you can find more hin s of Gabriel’s personality. It begins with the Work Meister S1 three-piece wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tires, paired up with Brembo brakes and Stance Super Sport coilovers. Consistency is also important for Gabriel, as he’s ensured all the parts by Rexpeed, AeroFlowDynamics, Forcewerkz and APR match the Yas Marina Blue paintjob. There’s no shortage of custom lighting either. The headlights are blacked out with 6000K HIDs, as well as LED lighting by the license plate, parking lamps and throughout the interior. Inside, you’ll also find a Bride ow Max driver seat, Recaro passenger seat and a Blox Racing shift knob. Sony, Metra and Rockford Fosgate take care of the audio. Thanks to some assistance from Dumores Collision and Evolution Auto Repair, as well as the support from his friends at Vancouver Fitted, Statik Kings and F7LTHY, Gabriel and his Evo X have joined the rank of champions with their first win at Tuner Battlegrounds: Vancouver International Auto Show.

ohammed Hosein is no stranger to cool custom projects. His 2013 Subaru STI is the successor to several previous builds that were built alongside his father, including a 2006 STI on air ride. Currently in their garage sits a 1973 Beetle with a 500-horsepower STI-swap, a 1976 Porsche 911 with a twin-turbo small block V8, and a candy-apple-red 2005 Ferrari F430. With a repertoire such as theirs, it’s only fittin that Hosein tackled his newest project car with outside the box thinking. After seeing all of the popular widebody kits available for the Subaru platform, Hosein made the decision to stray onto the road less travelled and build a show car with something custom, hoping to achieve a never-before-seen look. Looking at the car today, he seems to have succeeded.

64

PASMAG

“Seeing other people buy their body kits and spending $20,000 on these various kits, made me just want to be more unique with the build and not run to a brand named widebody,” writes Hosein, recalling some of his early motivators for the project. While the car has been modified in se eral areas, the custom widebody is the focus, and is Honsein’s favorite aspect of the build. “The biggest challenge was to figure ou how to continue cutting this car and making it wider, while still keeping the stock body lines and [figure out] h w to get the car as wide as I want it,” explains Hosein. Ultimately, the father-son team overcame the aforementioned challenge by just continuing to build as they went. Hosein tells us they went in without a plan and just played it by eye to maintain the stock body lines. At ground level, the car is outfit ed with an Air Lift Performance air suspension system, which helps the widened body sit properly over the 18-inch VIP Modular VX-910 wheels. The Perrin EQL headers and up-pipe allow the engine to breathe freely through an Invidia exhaust, which sings the boxer-four’s signature song. Kudos to Mohammed and his father for another unique build to add to their stable!

Although the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG sports the world's most powerful production four-cylinder, it lacks a factory bypass valve. The result is severe compressor surge, which Turbosmart's Kompact VR03 blow-off alves for the AMG rectify with a clever, direct bolt-on solution. Available in both Dual Port and Plumb Back, the Kompact can provide attention-grabbing blow-off alve sound, or quiet under-the-radar operation.

Standard wastegate actuators typically offer a weak boost curve, with slow build up and drop-off at high RPMs, as the wastegate begins to open before peak boost is reached. Turbosmart's IWG-75 actuator for the VW Mk6 GTI features a larger diaphragm and stiffer springs, meaning boost builds at lower RPMs and holds on right until redline.

Turbosmart's Smart Port for the VW Mk6 Golf R and Audi TT-S is our latest generation blow-off alve, with a new vent-to-atmosphere trumpet design that keeps the BOV closed at idle, even with a soft spring. Combined with the latest lowfriction materials and coatings, the soft spring allows the Smart Port to react quickly to prevent compressor surge and improve turbo response.

odifications didn’ begin in Santora’s life with an old Golf or Rabbit as you might have assumed. In actuality, a 1984 Pontiac Firebird is where Santora’s mod roots were honed. “My fi st car was a 1984 Pontiac Firebird that my dad had passed down to me to maintain,” Santora recalls. “I still figured out a way o make it unique in my own way. I got the Firebird when I was in high school. And what does every kid in high school that gets a car want to do? Make it go faster and look better!” THE MK5 HAS GONE THROUGH A FEW Not too long after, the catalyst STAGES IN THE EIGHT YEARS SINCE for almost every enthusiast alive ITS ACQUISITION. totaling it. Santora and his passenger were thankfully unharmed, which is something that Santora credits to the GTI’s superior engineering. When it came time to looking for a replacement, another GTI was a no-brainer. Enter Santora’s 2008 Golf Mk5 GTI, which he bought brand-new that year. The Mk5 has gone through a few stages in the eight years since its acquisition. The most notable would have to be the stage before receiving the touch of gold it now has. Before this, the Golf was completely murdered-out and wore a “Dark Knight” vanity plate. The all-black appearance and appropriate plate garnered the Golf a nickname: The Batmobile.

“The Batman theme and touches actually came about before the Dark Knight movie came out,” Santora explains. “The car was initially all blacked out, so I wanted a vanity plate that went well. The plate reads ‘Dark Knight,’ and soon after, the movie came out and everyone kept calling the car ‘The Batmobile.’ I embraced it! This is what also brought about the touches of gold on the car.” The golden accents take place all over the Golf. On the outside, the often red piping in the grille of the GTI is gold, as well as the rear emblem. The outstanding threepiece Rotiform DSC wheels feature a gold face and gloss black barrel and lip, measuring in at 18x11.5 inches with a -7 offset in the front, and 18x13 inches with a -9 offset in the rear. Under the hood, the valve cover and takes on some gold accents, while inside, the Forge Motorsport Big Knob shift knob, harness bar, air system hardlines and honeycomb inserts receive a touch of gold. The NRG steering wheel, shift and e-brake boots, as well as the Cobra racing seats were all stitched with the same gold to tie everything together. In the rear of the car, just above the air management system, is an illuminated Batman symbol to really drive the point home.

THE PLATE READS ‘DARK KNIGHT ,’ AND SOON AFTER, THE MOVIE CAME OUT AND EVERYONE KEPT CALLING THE CAR ‘THE BA TMOBILE.’ I EMBRACED IT! The most recent addition to the Mk5 is the massive APR GT wing. “Wait, I didn’t know APR Performance made a GT wing for Golfs,” you may be saying. Don’t feel bad for not knowing though – they totally don’t. Santora’s new wing is actually from a Subaru Impreza STI. After being inspired by the VW UK racing team’s GT wings, Santora was on the hunt for a wing that would work and by chance came across something that could. “It just happened that my cousin and business partner were parting out his Subaru STi build and had the wing for sale,” Santora says excitedly. “I held the wing up to [the Golf] one day and that was it. It had to happen! Then I was faced with the challenge to find a way o mount it.”

Santora made up some cardboard templates that he thought might do the trick, but just couldn’t find an one to cut him something workable, so he started looking for other options. In his search, he stumbled upon the company BMSPEC, who listed wing mounts for the Mk5 GTI. After calling and snagging the last set, Santora fabbed up some aluminum wedges and added an extra bolt hole on the mounts, and voila, the dark knight had become a caped (spoiled?) crusader. "I know people will say I’m crazy and poke fun at why I’d need all that downforce on a front-wheel-drive car,” laughs Santora. “Honestly, it looks great and I’m very happy with it! People compliment it and people criticize it, but it’s here to stay.” Come to think of it, Santora has quite a few modificatio choices that don’t exactly make

sense to everyone. He estimates that the CBFA two-liter inlinefour powerplant makes over 400 horsepower with the addition of a Garrett GTX3071R turbo and supporting parts from Forge Motorsport and upgraded Audi bits from the Golf’s cousin’s parts bin. But is all that power really needed for a car that’s squatting some ECS Tuning carbon fiber ender flare over stretched 305 width tires in the rear? Of course it is. This build is Santora’s and he does what he wants to make himself happy. It’s something he lives by. “I do things how I want them, whether it’s according to how people are doing things or completely out of the box,” He says with conviction. “It’s great knowing that people appreciate the things you do and want to build a car because you inspire them in some way to do so.” “If you ever see me out there at a show and

want to know how I did something, I’ll be happy to chat with you about it and show you how I got it that way,” Santora continues. “I’ve always thought that it’s childish of people that, for example, won’t tell people their wheel specs. Like, come on! The people asking obviously like what you're doing and you’ve inspired them somehow to do something. That’s big.” Santora’s Dark Knight GTI is a hero in its own right, as it carries the flag or what the car scene should be all about: mutual appreciation and helping each other out. If you can inspire someone to create something out of something you’ve created, we believe that’s got a certain hero quality to it. Let’s just hope that this GTI doesn’t get a vigilante status once the cops are called when it’s showing off i s stance on some train tracks.

IT TAKES A SPECIAL BREED OF ENTHUSIAST TO TAKE AN AMG MERCEDES TO THE FRINGES OF IMPORT-TUNER STYLING. LUCKILY FOR US, ROLAND GOTINGCO IS JUST THAT TYPE.

G

otingco’s background in automotive tweaking and tuning started at a young age, and only became more well-rounded as years went by. “I started off mini-trucking ” recalls Gotingco, thinking back to his fi st vehicle. “When I turned 16, my parents bought me a 1986 Toyota long bed truck. I started modding that right away. It was actually a wilder build than this car is now.” We would have loved to see that truck then, as the Mercedes CLK55 AMG he’s built is as wild as they come.

THE KIT IS THE RE SULT OF A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN KEI MIURA OF ROCKET BUNNY AND MASAAKI YOSHIMORI OF SARTO RACING

Gotingco’s affinity or wild off-the-wall builds runs deep, beginning long before he could drive, and even before his fi st mini-truck. “The older brother of one of my best friends at the time was a car guy. He and his best friend were into mini-trucks and VWs. They had these really wild builds, which always got published in a bunch of magazines. I loved their cars so much,” he reminisces. “I’m pretty sure this is what got me hooked. I remember asking my dad to drive me to car shows like VW jamboree and truck jamboree. Seeing all these modified ca s always had me wanting to do it too.” The road to his Mercedes build started with something else in mind, but a chance discovery would set Gotingco’s sights on the CLK55 AMG for good. “I re-

ally wanted to start working on something new and I was looking around for a CLS55 AMG. This was around the time that Rocket Bunny kits started to get popular,” says Gotingco. “Then Sarto Racing came out with this kit for the CLK. I loved the look of it so much, I changed my mind completely and started looking for a CLK AMG. It took me about four months to find the right one.” The kit mentioned above is the result of a collaborative effort between Kei Miura of Rocket Bunny and Masaaki Yoshimori of Sarto Racing, a company that started in 2013 with the goal of building specially tailored (“Sarto” means tailor in Italian) automotive projects. Their most notable project, which garnered them a fair bit of attention, was the creation of their widebody kit for the E36 BMW 3-series, which was also made in tandem (or Pandem, if you will) with Miura. At the 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon, the CLK55 kit was debuted, and that’s when Gotingco was hooked. Falling in love with a kit’s looks is easy enough, but being one of the fi st customers of a brand new kit poses its fair share of chal-

lenges when putting everything together. Gotingco explains some of his initial hurdles to us in detail. “The main challenge was the suspension. When I was building this, it was practically brand new here in the U.S. - I had nobody to turn to for answers. The way the body kit is designed, the fender arches at the bottom curve underneath the wheel. In other words, if the car is not low enough, the body kit will rub on the bottom side of the tire.” After doing some experimenting, Gotingco learned that the car’s ride height needed a significant drop, so he partnered with Megan Racing to have a custom suspension setup fabricated. Problem solved, right? Almost. “[The Megan Racing setup] lowered the car enough to where the height was perfect and the wheel sat exactly where it should within the wheel well. The only problem was the ride height was way too low. It would have been fine if it was a dedica ed track car, but it wasn’t. I couldn’t get in and out of my driveway,” he laughs. “The only solution was an air setup. I was lucky enough to partner with Airlift Performance and use their Autopilot V2 Digital Air Management system. But

since nobody made a bolt-on front air strut, we had to fabricate something using the Megan strut and universal airbag to fit ” A few tweaks, some experimentation and two valuable partnerships later, and the CLK’s suspension needs had been figured out, lea ing the car at an aggressive yet functional ride height. While the body kit is certainly the main attraction of this Mercedes (that, and its bright yellow paint, of course), Gotingco has been more enthralled with his integrated Focal sound system as of late. “The enclosure build itself is so clean and meshes well with the rear seat delete. It also sounds amazing all the time. I can roll down my windows on the freeway, turn the volume up and it’s still crystal clear,” he says, emphasizing the fact that his build is about more than just show-status. “I’m from SoCal so I like to just roll down the windows, cruise and drive, whether it’s Pacific Coast Highway or the canyons. When doing this, you gotta have your music. I built the system not just for show. I think Focal are some of the top components out there - I really love how it sounds.” At ground level, the Merc is out-

2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG fit ed with a 19-inch set of HRE’s Performance Classic Series 303 wheels, an excellent multi-spoke fit or the body kit, which fills ou the bold fender flares nicely an adds a luxury-performance look to match. The exterior look is finishe off with the help of APR erformance’s splitters on all sides, as well as a GT wing to solidify that aggressive style. Judging by the parts used, it’s safe to assume that Gotingco sees the value in sticking with high quality parts for a high quality build. He confirms that i writing. “Like most people, I try to use proven, top of the line brands. I think every product I have gone with shows that,” he explains. “I wanted this build to be one of the top quality builds. When looking at the brands I used, I think I accomplished this in not only form, but function as well. “ From seeing Yoshimori’s original kit, to adding his own personalized touches and eclectic styling, Gotingco has taken his CLK55 AMG to an entirely different level of style. He sheds some light on his overarching influences or us. “When

I fi st saw Masaaki’s CLK from Sarto Racing, I really wanted to do something like that. I thought it was an amazing build and just stunning to see. I really wanted to emulate the wow factor his car immediately showed. I also wanted to throw in my personal tastes. I really like the look of DTM cars, which I hope comes through in this car.” It’s always refreshing to see someone build a car for themselves, as opposed to building for internet fame or show points, and doing it to such a degree as this.

Style innovations like combining JDM and DTM styling cues on a newer model Mercedes are exactly the kinds of outside-thebox blasphemous ideas that keep the inspiration alive for many car enthusiasts. “It’s not 100 percent track, not 100 percent show, just 100 percent fun,” quips Gotingco, striking a chord with daily driven project car owners everywhere. “I guess it’s like the saying goes: Jack of all trades, but master of none.” Gotingco laughs. I can’t help but join him in laughter. What a wild ride.

Keeping It

Formula D’s hard charger finding new pace in 2016 STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW JENNINGS

F

ormula Drift veteran Chelsea DeNofa’s career began of humble origins. Like many aspiring US drivers, he got the bug early, even before he was old enough to legally drive. At 15, he attended his fi st local drift event, and by age 22 decided to invest his full energy into the sport. He won back-to-back XDC pro-am championships in 2010 and 2011, earning a Formula D license. Midway through the 2012 Pro season, a wreck forced him to upgrade to another chassis early, the same 2001 E46 sedan you see here. In 2016 spec, it soldiers on as the BC Racing GT Radial BMW 3-Series, new and improved with plenty of aces up its wide-fender sleeves. When the time came for the build (or re-build) for this season, he and his Chelsea DeNofa Motorsports team kept things simple. Use what works to make the car lightweight and functional, while avoiding unnecessary extras. The front end is graced with added downforce via a simple PTG front splitter, beneath a standard M3-style fascia. Level7tune fender arch extensions cover off the sides, while Doo er One carbon-kevlar rear quarter panels reduce mass. An Uras vented hood sits over the engine, and a Brooks Motorsports Elite rear wing rounds out the package. The wing is fully adjustable to suit each track layout, and can be fit ed with large end plates to help stabilize the car during huge sideways passes. Finally, AV Wraps handled the graphics package to give the car its signature look.

Inside, the office or tandem battles remains practical, sticking to DeNofa’s grassroots background. A Sparco Pro-ADV bucket driver’s seat with 6-point harness was chosen to hold the driver in place, and meet Formula D’s safety regulations. Straight ahead sits his favorite TryHard steering wheel, while stage right features an ASD handbrake setup for engaging the separate rear Wilwood e-brake. Last, but certainly not least, the factory BMW dashboard remains

intact, complete with original burl wood inlays. Classy! More impressive than the OE dash would have to be what lies ahead of it - the heart of this monster. DeNofa selected an M52-based BMW inline six-cylinder engine, displacing 3.0 liters with an M3’s S52 crankshaft. M&B Cylinder Heads tackled the build, swapping in fully forged race parts to lower weight and increase durability all at the same time. Think of it like the jail cell S.H.I.E.L.D. had

in the Avengers, just in case the Hulk got a little angry. Well, the whole idea is for this 3-Series to bring the fury. What better way than by adding some forced induction, especially that of a Turbo by Garrett GTW3886r turbocharger. Infl w starts at a Vibrant Performance air fil er and velocity stack, fed down through their signature front-

mount intercooler, before making way to a Russel Walker turbo manifold and Ti Con charge pipes and exhaust. Boost pressure is regulated by a GReddy Profec B controller, and the whole unit was precisely mapped by RK-Tunes. As if that wasn’t enough, this particular engine is also getting a dual-fuel diet. First up, Ignite Racing’s special E90 Ethanol

blend is pumped in as the base for the energy shake. Then, a shot of good ol’ Nitrous Oxide Systems’ finest is sprinkled on at ey moments throughout the rpm range, resulting in the perfect protein punch for a day at the smoke factory. The result is a whopping 850 horsepower, and 800 lb-ft of torque. All of that power needed just the right transmission. A four-speed Andrews A431 box does the trick, together with a Clutchmasters

twin-disk kit. Power is sent back through a Driftshaft Shop central spinner and axle, where, finall , a Syncro Design Works limited slip differential rounds out the rear end team. Tons of horsepower can get the car moving, but navigating through the turns is a whole other animal. This is where title sponsor BC Racing came in. The 3-Series was fit ed with their finest ZR ype Coilovers and Swift springs, giving the right blend of damping force and bump travel in high-G fl -bys. Normally coilovers are only applied to the four corners, but DeNofa’s drift machine sports a pair in what was once the trunk. They attach to the rear basher bars, the pipes that look like something out of a skate park, and are instrumental in allowing him to play bumper bowling with the concrete barriers that line various tracks. The suspension package perfectly suits his aggressive, no-holds-barred

style, and aided DeNofa in being named Formula Drift’s Hardest Charger in 2014. Each driver is constantly looking for ways to get more angle. On this Bimmer, an SLR Speed Ultra steering kit allows three times the standard amount of turning. With that much lock, spacers alone weren’t enough for clearance, so DeNofa opted to use a staggered Enkei RPF1 wheel setup: 17-inch front, and 18-inch rear. Couple those with GT Radial’s finest Champir SX2 tires and you’ve got one mean stance. Wilwood brakes totally fill the space left inside of thos white/gold Enkeis, providing ample stopping force at a moment’s notice. Whiteline sway bars, and Achilles Motorsport control arms/ bushings round out the mechanics. Altogether, it puts DeNofa into a fully connected state, able to pivot and maneuver the car as if part of his own body.

The quest for speed and aggressive slides has been a long and arduous journey. DeNofa’s BMW has seen more consecutive seasons than almost any other car on the grid, and continues to get better and better with each passing lap. 2016 is proof positive of that improvement, taking home an overall victory at the fi st round in Long Beach to kick things off. Where it goes from there, you’ll just have to follow along and find out. Fortunately, fan-favorite DeNofa makes that easy with a huge social media presence and killer behind-the-scenes video series titled Say Howdy Get Rowdy. Be sure to tune in, and keep up with their three-episode downloads from each race weekend. Like a spirited prize figh er, his BC Racing GT Radial BMW 3-Series will be along for the show, ready to take a few hits and dish out even more to the competition.
