Essentials!

If you twist your motor, you need the extra security of ARP fasteners Ordinary OEM fasteners were not engineered to operate in

Head Studs

a competition environment. Most racers know that factory TTY

Rod Bolts

(Torque To Yield) bolts are not designed to cope with engine modifications and high RPM operation. That’s why they switch to high strength ARP head studs, main studs and rod bolts. But often other important fasteners go “under the radar”. Damper bolts for example, ARP’s 200,000 psi tensile strength bolts are far superior to the factory stuff. Also, they feature

tall 12-point heads that won’t get rounded off from turning the engine over by hand (as in setting valve lash). ARP’s specially designed 200,000 psi flywheel and clutch

ISSUE PREVIEW

I

think I can say with confidence tha Hondas are where the vast majority of us got our start. Whether it was affordability, economical reasons, the endless aftermarket, or maybe even some kind of family loyalty – most of us have had some form of experience with or in a Honda. For some reason, Honda owners get a bad rap, and maybe that’s because the cars are just that accessible. Not everyone can afford a Subaru or an old Nissan, but when you’re young and dumb, nine times out of ten, you can find a Honda hanging out on someone s driveway in your neighborhood with a “For Sale” sign propped up in the window. For a couple hundred dollars, they usually still run well enough (because nothing besides burning oil can seem to kill these buggers), and it takes a whole $30 to grab a fart can exhaust from the local auto parts shop, bolt it on, and pretend to

be a racecar at your local drive-thru joint. This is where the stereotypes originate. For those true enthusiasts that put in the time and effort to build something quality, whether it be for the street, show, or track, we have a lot of respect for you. You take the lawnmower and “my milk jug has more displacement than your engine” jokes on the chin and continue with your vision. You deal with the immaturity and build on what most people can’t see is a seriously potent tuning platform. For that, we at PASMAG, of which 90 percent of us have owned or still own Hondas, applaud you. The twist on this issue is for you guys. We still have all the usual PASMAG fixings like show coverage, product guides, trending news, upcoming builds, and features, but there’s just a little more VTEC injected into each one this time around. Check out a team feature on the renowned Team Emotion, as

well as the final, and most impressi e NSX to come out of Umbrella Auto Design’s doors. We also said goodbye to our Accord+ project car this month, so we gave it a fitting arewell in the form of a little feature. That’s just the beginning of the issue. Our featured vehicles are all a little different this time around. Derek Covington’s boosted S2000 is built to be a full custom creation, Lester Rivera’s CTR clone is built to be in spec with the car he’s modelled his Civic after, and Jud Lagunas has taken an unassuming platform and transformed it into a showstopper with a vintage feel. They’re each built for different tastes or different reasons, but each car is built by a dedicated craftsman who’s focused on transforming their Honda into something that breaks the mold of what the rest of the community may view Hondas as. As someone who’s owned a few Hondas (’97 Integra GS and an ’01 Prelude SE), personally, these cars will always have a special place in my heart, no matter what I’m driving. They gave me my start and led me to where I am today. I can happily ignore the attention cravers at gas stations and coffee shops, because I know that somewhere nearby, a real enthusiast is making his dreams come true in his garage. Whether you love Hondas, or hate them, I hope you enjoy the issue all the same!

VTEC Variable Valve Timing and

Lift Electronic Control (VTEC for short) is an electronic and mechanical system available in several Honda engines that allows the engine to activate alternate lobes on the camshaft, effectively changing the cam’s lift timing and duration at a certain RPM (usually 5,000+) to increase horsepower.

VTC

Variable Timing Control is a mechanism that allows the intake camshaft gear to be continuously variable. This lets the valve overlap to be continuously adjusted at any RPM. VTC is always active. COVER CAR

VTEC-E

Like VTEC, VTEC-E allows for varying camshaft profiles, but with a focus on efficiency at low RPMs instead of performance. By not allowing the second intake valve to fully open at low RPM, it essentially forces a 16-valve engine to run as a 12-valve engine.

The meaning behind the CRX moniker is hotly contested. The most widely accepted meanings seem to be “Civic Renaissance Model X” and/or “Civic Renaissance eXperimental”, although some firmly believe the title to mean “Civic Racing eXperimental” or one of many other creative interpretations.

iVTEC

Intelligent Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control (iVTEC for short) is a mechanical system that combines the benefits of VTEC and VTC together. There are two camshaft profiles, one for low RPM and one for high RPM, that can optimize valve overlap throughout RPM ranges. The combination of VTEC and VTC produces an average of 10 horsepower more than just VTEC alone.

F-Series

Several variations of the F-series engine were made, both SOHC and DOHC, but the ones that resonate with enthusiasts everywhere are the famous DOHC F20C and F22C1, both radically different from the rest of their F-series family. Designed specifically for use in Honda’s S2000, these high-revving engines are still a popular choice today. With a redline of 9,000 RPM for the F20C, and 8,000 RPM for the F22C1 (a drop made to improve low end torque), and a power output over 240 horsepower, it’s no surprise that this inline four-cylinder is a popular powerhouse for enthusiasts with the need for speed.

One of the Honda community’s most popular classic DOHC engine swaps, popularized by early model Si and SiR models of the late 80s and early 90s. The B-series was the first engine to incorporate VTEC. Made in 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0L variations.

Popularized by its usage in the VTEC-equipped Prelude, one of the Honda tuner staples of the late 90s and early 2000s, the DOHC H-series was a big hit because of its larger displacement. Available in 2.2L (H22) and 2.3L (H23), this engine was popular among Honda drag racers. It also formed the basis of Honda’s touring car racing program for many years.

D-Series

K-Series

Available in SOHC and DOHC formats, and in displacements ranging from 1.2 to 1.7L, the D-series was the forgotten step-child of many late 80s and 90s Honda platforms like the CRX and first generation Integra. While many tuners and builders opted to keep the D-series for its simplicity and easiness to work on, many others chose to forgo the D-series and swap in a B-series instead.

The most modern of engine swap choices, the K-series, has been manufactured in a staggering amount of configurations over its more-than-a-decade-long span of production. While there are several variants of the K-series, the most popular models for tuners are the early 2.0L (K20) found in the RSX Type-S and Civic Type R, as well as the 2.4L (K24) found in models like the Accord, CR-V, and Acura’s TSX. These configurations were popular because of their integration of performance i-VTEC. COVER CAR February / March 2016

To celebrate this special anniversary, SEGA has teamed up with Honda’s number one selling car in America, the Civic, as well as experienced car builder Brian Fox of Fox Marketing to put together a car worthy of the spiked, blue speedster. By the way, it’s also the Touring version of the Civic, which is suitably turbocharged. The 2016 model Civic received a couple coats of BASF R-M “Candy Sonic Blue” paint, which was accented with “Sonic Yellow” throughout and topped off with a custom vinyl scheme that calls back on 25 years of Sonic history. Under each corner, the custom XXR wheels were treated with paint schemes that reflect Sonic’s trademark sneakers in the rear, and the in-game collectable rings up front. Inside, the interior was taken care of by Katzkin with a full-on Sonic theme, with the seats being stitched up in blue, white, and red leather with an embroidered 25th Anniversay logo applied to the headrests. In the trunk, there’s a full Rockford Fosgate audio installation with a floormounted, flip-up 32-inch screen for playing the classics on. The Sonic Civic debuted at San Diego Comic Con, but it’s not done running yet. Keep your eyes out for it at some big event near you in the future!

AUGUST IS A PRETTY AWESOME MONTH FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS IN CANADA. IT’S THE PEAK OF THE SUMMER, AND FAR ENOUGH INTO THE SEASON THAT EVERYONE HAS THEIR CAR OUT IN ITS NEWEST ITERATION, EVEN THE LATE BLOOMERS. CAR SHOWS ARE PLENTIFUL, WHETHER PARKING LOTS MEETS OR SHOW AND SHINE COMPETITIONS, BUT THERE IS ONE SHINING GEM THAT BRINGS EVERY FACET OF CAR CULTURE TOGETHER EVERY YEAR, AND ATTRACTS ENTHUSIASTS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY (PLUS SOME SOUTH OF THE BORDER) TO SHOW UP WITH THEIR BEST AND JUST HAVE A GOOD TIME. There were also plenty of places to whip your wallet out at, like local favorite TBA, who debuted some new designs and brought back some old hits. If you were lucky enough to grab a spot in line, you could also grab a hug and selfie from the beautiful Tianna G or drool over the bikini contest if that’s what floats your boat. And no matter where you do go in the show, you’re followed by a fantastic soundtrack played by at least three different DJs, who were spinning almost all 12 hours of the show. With an estimated 20,000 attendees, over 350 competitor vehicles and 45 exhibitor booths, Importfest 2016 was one for the books. The 2017 show is already being tentatively planned for August 26th, so if you’ve ever been curious about Canada, here’s your perfect excuse to make the trip!

models, celebrities and more, all under one roof. For the 10th year in a row, that roof would be the one belonging to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, where Jay Martinez, the show’s organizer, says Tuner Evo really got its start all those years ago. For 2016, the show was bigger, better, and showcased vehicles that were leaps and bounds in quality and showmanship than previous years. If you’re looking for another reason to head out to Philly besides the cheesesteak, you’ve found it. Tuner Evolution is everything you need and more for your fill of everything we crave in this little niche we’ve cut out for ourselves. We can’t wait for what 2017 has in store!

01 How do you make your presence known at a show the size of Tuner Evo? Do exactly as NYC Motoring did with their Liberty Walk R35, and put it on color-matched powder blue Forgiatos and drop it the floor. That should do it. 02 Darren Balico’s itasha-style S-chassis is a show car that actually goes sideways at the track. Yes, his style may be a little lewd, but so is his driving style. It all works. 03 Ben Harmony’s freshly-built RWB Porsche 993 was sitting pretty on the show floor. Have you seen it in Krispy Media’s newest videos on YouTube? It’s required viewing! 04 Can we just take a second to drool over Drew Evans’ G37? The Liberty Walk kit retrofitted to the sedan body is fantastically done, and everything under the hood is just as gorgeous. 05 The first M&M widebody Honda S2000 belonging to John Paul has had such a strong show season this year. This guy is everywhere, we swear! 06 @o˛ ensive_frs debuted his new look at Tuner Evo: Philly this year. After months of construction, we all finally got to have a peak at Industry Garage’s unique take on a widebody kit for the FR-S!

Dry Carbon Kevlar Cooling Plate for 1997-2001 Prelude $349.99 | PasswordJDM.com The cooling system is a vital component of your Prelude's operation. Unfortunately, gaps in the structure around the radiator allow air to escape, resulting in lost efficiency. By preventing air to escape over the top of the radiator, these cooling plates allow a maximum amount of airflow directly to your radiator, resulting in reduced coolant temperatures during aggressive driving.

t can often take some time until certain things grow on an individual; whether it’s a new haircut, a change in career or move to a new city. Sometimes, like in the case of Bryan Antonio and his 2013 Scion FR-S, it’s the purchase of a new car. “At first I didn’t like the look [of] this car,” explains Antonio, “but when I saw the red Rocket Bunny widebody on this car by Kei Miura, that sold me. I installed [a] Five Axis body kit first while saving up for the Rocket Bunny kit, as I really don’t like the stock look on this car.” The Rocket Bunny kit fitted on the FR-S is actually one of the biggest challenges Antonio faced while working on his build. “I tried a lot of shops here in Calgary but all of them don’t

want to cut a new car. My last option was to head down to Vancouver to one of the shops [that] have experience installing Rocket Bunny wide body on an FR-S. I’m glad I found someone closer to Calgary, which is Leonard Song, owner of First Gear Project – Edmonton.” “I just wanted to build it for myself: not for show, not for race. [It was] during Driven Calgary when I fully committed to it, and what do you know, I won an award. So for now my intentions have changed to show car, and it might change [again] when I finish my engine build.” For those inspired by his story, take heed to a lesson from the builder himself. “When I was building my car it had little imperfections and some temporary parts. During those times you will get negative comments from random people; people that don’t know what you are building, or your plans…and especially those people who are jealous of your build.” Antonio concludes. “When you are building something, don’t let those negative comments bring you down. At the end of the day it is your own build [and] your own money to spend.”

att Budziosz first laid eyes on a Z32 at the age of five. It was that moment he fell into to the JDM scene and knew he’d one day own a Z Series. Now an adult, Budziosz has not only fulfilled his childhood dream but has build a champion show car with his 1990 Nissan 300ZX TT. “I ended up buying this one which was a factory original naturally aspirated model (which I converted to twin turbo with a JDM TT Swap) and even now when I see a Z32 on the street, regardless of trim level or even condition, it puts a big smile on my face,” explains Budziosz. Budziosz’s original intention was to keep the car “as close to stock as possible with small

52

touches like wheels and suspension,” but that quickly changed when he began exploring performance tuning and modifications. “I did the twin turbo conversion and right away decided to get all the bolt ons available [and] upgrade the turbos and fuel system. Of course with that came the NIStune ECU. The 275 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires I had just weren't getting traction, even in 3rd gear on the highway, which led to the wide body build.” The twin turbo conversion, which was done by AMS Motorsports, helps bring the 300ZX engine to 550 whp with 500 ft-lbs of torque. Of course there are some who’d say that’s plenty of speed for a daily driver but not Budziosz – he’s aiming for 1000+ whp! Budziosz extends a special thanks to a handful of people who helped him get here. Special thanks goes out to Chris from JA Automotive, Hilary from Ink & Iron Autobody, Dan from Dan Fournier Metalworks, Vuk from AMS Motorsports, Blain from RIgtheous Garage, and Ronan from RoRo Designs.

This was the beginning of modifying every car that I owned.” Mach has always maintained the purpose of building a one-o° show car “as there isn’t much else you could do with the xB platform.” His favorite modification is the one-of-a-kind xB trailer. “One of the major challenges was making sure we cut the trailer in the right spot and welded it properly. We took our time and it came out perfect.” “I have started to focus on Junction Produce as a brand for my build because I am focusing on making my car a VIP build,” he goes on to say. “The trailer was inspired from my previous build, and I was also inspired by [other] VIP builds to do my car in a VIP theme.” Other elements maintaining that VIP-style include the custom hardwood, a fiberglass enclosure, complete LED conversion, and of course, Universal Air suspension with Viair dual compressors and 220 PSI gauges.

teven Crespo first caught sight of the Acura RSX while playing Need for Speed Underground 2, one of the tuner world’s most influential video games, but it wasn’t until he purchased his own RSX that he really fell in love with the platform. “I first started with a basic automatic RSX, and after just a few years I upgraded to a Type S model,” he writes, remembering the switch that started his modification journey. Like many enthusiasts, what starts out as a plan for simple build quickly becomes something bigger after enough time. “Like many car enthusiasts, my intentions were simply to lower the car on D2 suspension with some nice a˛ ordable wheels. One thing led to another and I eventually found myself building

a full-blown show car.” This is a sentiment we see time and time again. Unfortunately for Crespo, the first motor he had was blown up under boost, so he faced some budgetary setbacks when he needed to build a new motor capable of handling power. “After blowing my stock motor I decided I wanted to build a motor reliable enough to withstand the abuse of a turbo, so buying a stock motor and installing it in the car wasn’t an option,” he explains. “Although building a fully built motor was necessary, it was a major setback because it wasn’t in the budget. I was lucky that at the time I had a good job, and with little time I was able to gather the money to continue the process of my build.” In completing the build, Crespo went with a variety of well-known and reputable brands to compliment his RSX. Spoon Sports, Backyard Special and ChargeSpeed are among some of the main points of interest on the car, but Crespo says that Anointed Aero – the company that designs the limited wide body flares on his car – is the one that stands out the most. Whatever aspect of this build you focus on, quality was the name of the game, and we respect a job well done.

kay, so, a few things have switched around lately. One of the main things that happened this past month is the loss of my beloved “Lemon Party” MR2. After my search to find a clean Type S K-series Honda engine fell flat, I considered selling the car and picking something else up. Turns out my friend Colin, one of the mad scientists and owner at Big Country Labs makers of some of the sickest wings on the market - has been obsessing over the MR2 for a while now. He just had to have it, so now he has his own personal lemon party. He plans on making it even crazier than what I had planned for it, so I can't wait to see what he comes up with. That being said, I’d need a daily while my FR-S is under the knife, so I picked up another two-door sportscar: a 350Z. This Z was owned by a fellow Low N Slow crew member, so yes, it came pre-built. The previous owner had the 350Z fitment game on lock, and for the last eight or nine

58

years his car has had many setups. From its metal widebody and full JL Audio system, to its diamondstitched interior and Weds wheels, everywhere I go in this thing, it stops people dead in their tracks. I plan on cleaning it up a bit since it has some years and miles on it, and above all, give it some good lovin’. Now for the FR-S! My Pandem kit (technically Rocket Bunny V3) will have already arrived by the time this is published and you’re reading this. Stay tuned for the updates to come as we get everything together. This kit is wider and even more aggressive than the first two, so get hyped! As I write this, the FR-S is at MotoIQ for a full motor build! A widebody FR-S with a built motor? What?! Within the first day, they’ve already pulled the motor out and stripped it down to just the long block, intake manifold, harness, and ECU. I will be running JE 10.5:1 stock bore pistons, BC rods, Supertech valvetrain, and a Deatschwerks fuel system. The car is going to make some nasty

power - about 500 horses worth if all goes according to plan! I am beyond excited for all the madness that is about to take place with the car. I have so much more happening with the FR-S to come, but I can’t spill it all now. I’ve got to make sure I’ve got enough content every month after all! Stay tuned for some super exciting updates!

or the third season, up and coming drivers will compete at four select events over the course of the Formula Drift season to vie for the Formula Drift Pro 2 championship. The top eight finishers at the end of the season will earn a Formula Drift Pro license, which comes with the privilege of competing at the full eight-stop Formula Drift Pro series schedule in 2017. At the halfway point of the Pro 2 season, we’ve already seen some exciting tandem action, with several drivers showing strong promise. While two drivers have a substantial lead over the rest of the Pro 2 series roster, there’s enough points available in the final two events for any driver in the top 10 to earn the win. With the playing field being quite level, this could prove to be the most exciting championship chase to date! Here’s a look at the top five Pro 2 drivers at the halfway point of the season: MARC LANDREVILLE Landreville has been competing in the top Pro class for several seasons now, but decided to dial back his commitment for the 2016 season and focus solely on the Pro 2 championship. That commitment appears to be paying off by way of a pair of final round visits, winning in Orlando and taking second place in Atlanta. Landreville may have won both events, had a collision in the final four in Atlanta not damaged his car. Landreville competed in the top series in Canada for years before coming to Formula Drift, and probably has more tandem experience than any other driver on the Pro 2 grid. Landreville has effectively guaranteed himself a Pro class license for 2017, but he is hopeful that a Pro 2 championship will bring some sponsorship support that will help his cause.

JEFF JONES As we covered in a previous article, Jeff Jones is one of the journeymen in the sport, and is the only driver to compete in each of the three Pro 2 seasons. Jones continues to find success at the Pro 2 level, winning in Atlanta and placing second in Orlando, all while running both the Pro and Pro 2 schedules. Jones has also been pulling double duty all season, competing in the Pro class as well, and is the only driver to be doubling down. Should Jones stay in the top 32 final drivers standing in the Pro class, as well as stay in the top eight in the Pro 2 class, he will have confirmed his license via both qualifying requirements for the third straight year, an impressive accomplishment considering the commitment required to be competitive in either class, much less both simultaneously. ANDREW LEWIS Relatively unknown entering the season, Lewis has proven to be competitive in his rookie season after just two events. Lewis has utilized the same S13 chassis for several seasons of ProAm, which likely helped his cause, as many drivers build new chassis in preparation for making the jump from ProAm to Pro 2. Lewis has qualified well and driven consistently, he just hasn’t had much luck with his bracket placing to date. Should Lewis have a favorable bracket in one of the final two events, it’s likely he will earn a podium finish before the season is over.

MATT MADRIGALI Hailing from Northern California, Madrigali had the fortune of competing in both the Golden Gate Drift series, as well as the Just Drift ProAm series over the past few years, both of which have heavy involvement from top Formula D pros. Madrigali has also worked closely with both Matt Field and Calvin Wan on driver coaching, resulting in being calm and collected in his tandem battles. Madrigali took the final podium position in Orlando by virtue of his qualifying position over Lewis, losing only to Jones in the final four by virtue of a pair of small steering corrections in chase. Madrigali will be a driver to watch for due to the amount of driving he’s done in the past several years in some of the most competitive ProAm series in the country. RYAN LITTERAL Litteral has been a mainstay in the Southern California drifting scene for almost 10 years now, but decided to make the commitment to run in the Pro 2 series just last season. After mechanical issues plagued his 2015 season, reliability has helped Litteral showcase his driving talent behind his RB25-powered Nissan S14. Litteral has competed in China at the World Drift Series alongside Formula Drift veterans, so he has plenty of tandem experience against skilled drivers. Litteral earned his first Pro 2 podium in Atlanta, and had a tough battle with Madrigali in Orlando before being knocked out in the “Great 8.” If Litteral can avoid mechanical issues the rest of the season, he will consistently be a threat in contention for the podium.

Q&A

Garry Springgay

garry.springgay

I am writing to you in the hopes of you being to help me decide how to improve my system’s performance. I’m running a Rockford P1000Xbd amp to a pair of Punch P2 four-ohm 12-inch woofers in a small, sealed box. My mids and tweets are MB Quart and they are powered by an older Kicker amp with about 100 watts a side. All of this is installed in a 2012 Honda Civic. The system is okay now, but I’d like to make it a lot louder without spending much money. The sound quality is good enough, but I wish it was way louder. I expected more for a 1,000-watt amp. Do I need a capacitor? What about porting the woofer box? Any help would be great. Jeremy D. via email Well Jeremy, let’s see if I can shed some light on your situation. You have very good product, but you’d like more SPL. If I understand your email correctly, I presume it’s louder bass you’re after. First of all, the Rockford P1000Xbd amp is rated for 500 watts at two ohms, not 1,000 watts. To get the maximum power from your amp, you should be using two-ohm woofers. Secondly, to make the car “way louder” isn’t going to be easy without spending some bucks. Just like speed, SPL costs money, so how loud it plays is generally proportional to your budget. To make your car noticeably louder, you need an increase of at least three dB. That means double the power, or about 1,000 watts, which is above the rated power handling of your current woofers. This means beefier woofers, lower impedance, more current

62

PASMAG

draw, etc. But, if you want to keep the gear you have, a larger vented enclosure would most likely give you a significant increase in SPL, with a small trade off in very low frequency output. This is probably the biggest gain you can make for the least money spent. Just make sure the person who designs your new enclosure knows what they are doing. Incorrect tuning can and will damage your woofers. Adding a capacitor to your system will not give you a noticeable increase in SPL. Good luck with your improvements! I have three four-ohm, eight-inch dual voice coil JL Audio woofers. They are in perfect condition, but are a few years old. I also have a large two-channel MTX amplifier that’s rated for 1,000 watts bridged at four ohms. I want to build a box for them that will fit in the back of my Jeep Cherokee. My problem is, I don’t know how to wire them to achieve the optimum load for my amp. Also, I have been told that series wiring speakers degrades the sound quality. What’s the best way to make what I have work? Bert M. via email. Okay Delbert, your situation is pretty common, and it’s an easy one to make work well. First of all, don’t worry about any degradation in sound quality caused by series wiring. I have heard this myth too many times before and it is nonsense. With that out of the way, here’s how I would handle the wiring: wire each woofer’s dual voice coils in parallel (positive to positive, negative to negative). This

will result in each woofer having an impedance of two ohms. Then connect the three woofers together in series. The end result of this parallel/ series wiring will be a net impedance of about six ohms. Your MTX amp will have no problem playing the three woofers in bridged mono, and the upside of the slightly higher impedance is reduced current consumption and less amp heating. If you had an amplifier that could handle a two-ohm load, you could have wired the woofer coils in series and then paralleled them for a load of about 2.7 ohms. However, for your amp, the first method will work fine, and sound good. I have an Audiomobile line driver with eight volts of output, and a Memphis amplifier that says it can handle up to 4.5 volts of input. Are these two pieces compatible? My friend says I’ll damage the amp by overdriving it. Someone else suggested putting in a resistor or something, but I’m not sure how or where it goes. I have the gain set on the amp to about halfway because if I set it lower, the amp loses too much power. How do you get a good match between different output and input requirements? Ty via email. Hello Ty, This is a very common question, and it’s widely misunderstood. When an amplifier manufacturer gives you a “maximum” signal input voltage, what they are telling you is that with the gains set at minimum, that’s how much signal it will take to drive the amp to full power. This stated voltage level does not determine the maximum voltage source you should use. Remember, a head unit (or line driver) only puts out maximum voltage when two conditions are met. First, the volume needs to be maxed out, and second, the information on the disc needs to be recorded at “all bits high,” which is the loudest level attainable on a CD. Anytime you are cruising

down the road listening to your system, you probably don’t have the volume wide open, and you are listening to music that has some amount of “crest factor.” Crest factor is the difference between the average output level and the maximum output level of the track you’re listening to. The more crest factor you have, the greater the dynamics of the music can be. As a consequence, the average voltage coming out of your eight-volt line driver could easily be less than two volts! That’s the reason you needed to add gain at the amplifier because the average level is nowhere near the 4.5 volts it takes to get full power from your amplifier. On the rare occasions you do have high signal output, yes it will clip the amplifier, but these conditions generally are so brief and infrequent that our hearing “masks” them and we don’t hear it. Adding this additional gain to your system results in what engineers call “gain overlap” and used in moderation, it’s a very good way to get the power you paid for, as well as limit the distortion to acceptable levels. Most people can tolerate at least 10 dB of gain overlap. Adding too much gain increases noise problems while decreasing dynamic range and sound quality. It sounds to me like your system is setup fairly well, but if you want to tweak on it, check out Autosound 2000’s CD-104 Ultimate Level Setting Disc. It’s a great tool to use to maximize a systems performance without causing a lot of unwanted noise and distortion. Lastly, one important point should be made. Adding or reducing gain does not change the power of an amplifier. It simply allows the amplifier to be driven to full power with different input signal levels. More gain might sound more powerful, but it isn’t. The amp just gets to full power faster on the volume scale. Regardless of the position of the gain pots, the actual amount of power an amplifier develops at clipping does not change.

Focal FDP6.900 Amplifier Review All the functionality you need with Focal's impeccable quality. Focal's FPD series keeps on getting better.

hen Focal introduced the brilliantly conceived FPD series of amplifiers a couple of years ago, they knew they had developed a solid performer with exceptional sonics. For a lot of companies, that would have been enough, but it wasn’t for Focal. In a neverending quest for better performance and improved functionality, the FPD series has been improved and upgraded to even higher performance. As usual with a Focal product, the product has a look and feel that portends high quality. For this review, we’ll be taking a look at the powerful and accommodating - in terms of system design – six-channel FDP6.900.

FEATURES The FDP6.900 has been designed to o˛ er maximum installation and system design flexibility while delivering prodigious power. With six channels of output, the

Suÿ ce it to say, if you can’t send the right signals to your system’s speakers with this amp, you need some help. Crossover flexibility aside, there are other nice touches to be had with the Focal amp. The power supply is regulated to provide the same power to your speakers, regardless of battery voltage. There are three pairs of RCA inputs for maximum signal control, but there is also a 2/4/6-channel signal steering switch, so you can drive the entire amp with whatever signal input you have handy. If you don’t have RCA outputs, the FDP6.900 will accept speaker wire level inputs directly to the RCA connectors thanks to the very wide range of gain adjustment available. When using speaker level inputs from a BTL amplifier (typical OEM amp) there is no need for a separate turn-on wire, as turn-on will be sensed through the RCA connectors. amp can be used alone as a single amp solution for front, rear and subwoofer channels, or thanks to the very flexible crossover functionality, it can even be used to drive a fully active three-way speaker system. The crossover design found in the FDP6.900 provides flexibility of adjustment that very few amplifiers can match. Channels one and two can be configured for a flat response, or high-pass from 50 Hz to 4 kHz, or to match the setting of channels three and four. Channels three and four can be configured as lowpass, bandpass, high-pass or flat, with two separate frequency pots each having the same 50 Hz to 4 kHz range. On the fifth and sixth channels, the amp provides flat,

All of the connections and controls are found along one edge of the amp, making installation convenient and tidy. Speaking of tidy, the FDP6.900 uses either conventional style mounting brackets, or a clever hidden steel mounting bracket that conceals the mounts and provides a very secure method of installation. An illuminated, white top logo tells you the amp is on, and flashes to serve as a built-in diagnostic indicator. 4 OHM POWER vs THD+N @ 1000 Hz 14.4V Batt Cogent Audio Labs

to my reference component speakers, with the crossovers left in full range mode. The results were really impressive. From a sonic perspective, the amp is very transparent and musical. The bass is well controlled with excellent authority. I didn’t notice any degradation of the full range signal from the components when the bass hit either, which is something I’m listening for when auditioning a multi-channel amp with a single power supply. My listening session lasted several hours, while I simply 2 OHM POWER vs THD+N @ 1000 Hz 14.4V Batt enjoyed the music from this clever bit of engineering until I realized it was dark outside and I should have gone home a long time ago. I’d rank the sound quality performance of this amplifier in the top 10 car audio amplifiers I’ve heard this year. It’s certainly good enough to benefit from very good source material, and show the limitations of material that isn’t top notch. I suppose I’m in the minority on this, but when gear is this good, it’s almost a shame to 2 Ohm Power @ 14.4 V Batt

When it came time to listen to the FDP6.900, I had fairly high expectations. I particularly wanted to try out the amp’s ability to deliver high power into six channels simultaneously with a four-ohm woofer bridged across the fifth and sixth channels. To that end, I bridged a four-ohm woofer to the proper channels and set the crossover to low-pass at about 80 Hz. The remaining four channels were connected

play MP3 or other digitally-formatted music through it. This amp deserves high resolution music, or at the very least, CD quality. Sure, it will play whatever you like, but listening to low-res compressed music through an amp this good is like putting re-treads on a Ferrari.

PERFORMANCE/BENCH MEASUREMENTS Back on the test bench the next morning, the Focal amplifier sh ws why its sonic performance is so impressive. The amp easily out-performs its advertised specifications, deli ering exemplary performance

in every significant est. Frequency response is flat be ond audibility, and it made gobs of good, clean power. Low level THD+N has been improved as well, and signal-to-noise performance is excellent. Overall power efficiency is slightly wer than some other Class-D amplifie s, but with this level of power and performance, it’s well worth the trade off.

CONCLUSION As good as the original FPD amps were, Focal could have simply rested on their laurels, but as this amplifier at ests to, they did anything but. Focal improved the amp in areas that really matter, and did it well. With a U.S. price of $999 ($1,199 in Canada), this level of performance isn’t exactly cheap, but in my opinion, it’s worth every penny. If you love your music and you need a great amplifier that can be configured o run just about any system configuration ou want, look no further than the Focal FDP6.900.

or three decades, the Orion brand of car audio has been synonymous with high performance products that are designed for the real world, and are built to go the distance. For this review, we’ll take a closer look at one of the more powerful amplifie s in the Ztreet lineup, the ZO12000.1D monoblock.

“EVERYTHING JUST WORKS, AND WORKS WELL.”

Actual Measured Power @ 1.0% THD+N @ 12.6 V Battery

The ZO12000.1D is a Class-D subwoofer amplifie , designed to operate into any speaker load from eight ohms down to one ohm. It is rated to produce 800 watts into a four-ohm load, 1,200 watts into a two-ohm load, and 1,800 watts into one ohm. To accomplish that sort of power delivery, the amp is equipped with some seriously heavy-duty internals. A look inside confirmed that act. There are two large power supply toroids with 22,000 μF of power supply capacitance, and for the high

voltage rails, 10,800 μF of output capacitance. Sixteen TO-220 case size MOSFETS are used for power supply switching, and 12 more MOSFETS handle the output duties. The PCB is double-sided and uses heavy-gauge, high-current traces and buss bars. Measuring roughly 18 x 9 x 2 inches, the ZO12000.1D is certainly a tidy size for an 1,800-watt amp. Upon getting my head out of the internals and having a look at the finished op side, it’s a nicely finished amp eaturing a black brushed aluminum heatsink, complemented on each end with a removable ABS endcap to hide the connections and mounting points and protect the controls. Power and speaker connections are made on one end, while the input signal connections and control functions are found on the opposite end. The power connections are designed to accept 1/0-gauge cables, and speaker wires can

be as large as eight-gauge, with paired paralleled speaker outputs for convenience in wiring. RCA connections are available for input signal, as well as bridge-in and bridge-out connections for bridging two of these monsters together. If you do that, you better have a serious woofer system to handle the immense power available! Variable control pots for gain, crossover frequency, and a parametric bass boost are found along with the subsonic fil er and a remote gain control connection. The remote gain control itself is cleverly executed, in that it can be mounted under the dash in the supplied housing box or removed from the housing and mounted with a small bracket or through an existing panel for a custom look.

LISTENING My setup was simple. I set the crossover for about 80 Hz, adjusted the gain, and left the EQ

flat with the subsonic fi er off, as I planned to use a sealed subwoofer system. Man, I just never get tired of having a lot of power in my listening system. When you have enough power to get all the volume you want without ever getting near the amplifie ’s (or speaker’s) limits, listening to music can be a completely different experience. And with the Orion Ztreet amp driving a pair of four-ohm 12s in a sealed enclosure, I can tell you this amplifier has p wer to spare. Even at really loud levels, I never came close to overdriving it, although I’m pretty sure my 750-watt woofers had all they could handle. The bass is tight, well-defined and generall sounds great with any music, at any volume. Kick drum beats had the sort of impact you expect at a concert, and with what seemed like an unlimited supply of clean power available, the listening experience was almost intoxicating. Unless you are a serious SPL competitor, I can’t imagine anyone needing more power than the ZO12000.1D provides.

PERFORMANCE/BENCH MEASUREMENTS After seriously enjoying the sonic performance and pushing my woofers and my ears pretty close to the limit, I was really curious to see what kind of numbers the Orion amp would turn out on the test bench. Not surprisingly for an Orion amplifie , the ZO12000.1D exceeded its rated power numbers with relative ease, coming up just shy of 2,000 watts into one ohm! Throughout testing, the amp measures well in every aspect. Efficiency is ery good, although at full chat into one ohm, you should realize that this amp can draw almost 200 amperes of current. Signal-to-noise is good, all the protection circuits (over and under voltage,

thermal, and short circuit) worked perfectly, the crossovers did what you’d expect. Everything just works, and works well.

CONCLUSION

ORION ZO12000.1D

Once again, the Orion amp exceeded even my expectations of it, and I’ve been measuring and testing Orion amplifie s for almost 20 years. If you are thinking about a new subwoofer amplifie , and you’re willing to step up to a high quality product, this could be the perfect choice. The power is addicting, it’s cool-looking, it’s priced appropriately for the performance delivered, and it sounds great. Just be prepared to match the big power to appropriate woofers, or you’ll be in trouble. This amplifier has great pe formance and good value, and for the majority of people, it may be the last subwoofer amplifier ou’ll need for a long time.

he Honda S2000 is a special car to a lot of people, Honda included. Initially introduced to the market in 1999 for Honda’s 50th anniversary, the S2K was the pinnacle of Honda’s engineering at the time all squeezed down into a compact sportscar chassis. This is the car that shared the same assembly line with the legendary NSX after all. Not only was it engineered to be a true driving machine, the

S2000 also had the power to back it up. By using advances made in its race teams, Honda planted the most powerful 2.0-liter engine at the time, the venerable F20C inline-four, longitudinally in the bay. The high-strung, VTECequipped four-cylinder makes approximately 250 horsepower – almost 125 horsepower per liter. Pair that with a six-speed gearbox, Torsen LSD, and rearwheel-drive layout and you’re laughing! Laughing is exactly what Derek Covington was doing while behind the wheel of his friend’s Spa Yellow S2000, almost nine years ago. Turns out he had such a good time that he had to have one himself. About a month after his joyride, Covington was the proud new owner of a 2003 Sebring Silver S2K.

Covington is no stranger to quick two-door sportscars, as he’s owned and modified two 300ZXs (let’s all have a moment of silence for his bank account). The first Z was Covington’s first car, purchased at age 16 and modified until he could actually drive it. Sadly, it was short-lived; stopped at a red light, one of Covington’s friends rear-ended him bad enough to write o° the

t on "After I installedenant inextohaausspiral the car though, I wessing with it and of constantly m parts." changing

car. The second Z would get a more fulfilled life, which may be a little subjective, seeing as it was built in 2006 and The Fast and the Furious modification trend of flip-up TVs, PS2s, and gaudy body kits were still very much in style. Slowly, Covington’s tastes grew apart from the car, and the S2000 became part of his life. When he initially brought the S2K home, he had no plans to modify it, and intended to keep it as a daily. We all know how that story always pans out though, don’t we? Soon, Covington would need a daily for his daily. “Originally, the S2000 was supposed to be my daily driver with literally zero mods - maybe tint and exhaust,” laughs Covington. “After I installed an exhaust on the car though, I went into a spiral of constantly messing with it and changing parts.”

The transition from the silver S2000 of nine years ago, to the purple one we see today, started o° in a completely di° erent direction than how cars are inspired and built these days. Social media was still very much in its infancy, so Covington got his ideas and build plans from the S2Ki.com forums and even circled parts in car magazines to help him push through snags and make his Honda dreams take shape. “I love the car as a whole,” Covington says. “The platform just suits me. It's a vehicle I will most likely never get rid of, even if I park it in a garage and start a new project. My favorite part of the build has to be the engine bay. I just enjoy how simple we were able to make it, while still packing in all the important components to make it functional and not a pain in the butt to drive on the street.” The man says his favorite part is under the hood, so let’s start there, shall we? No swaps here, just a nice build. The head of the F20C four-banger, pistons, piston rings, and connecting rods are all from Inline Pro, a purveyor of high-horsepower Honda engine machining and components, which should tell you exactly where this build is headed in the power department. This combination of power-packing goodies actually strokes the 2.0-liter out to a 2.4! The F20C, on top of having a 9,000 rpm redline, is also a resilient engine that can handle all sorts of boost if supported properly. Covington has gone for a Borg Warner S400SX turbocharger for an extra kick in the pants, with a Full Blown Motorsports provided intercooler, enlarged throttle body, intake manifold, and fuel rail to maximize the whole setup. All in, this system makes a dyno-tested 730 horsepower and 560 pounds-feet of torque. What was that about slow Hondas again? The beautifully built engine sits in a shaved and tucked bay by way of Josh Croll of Croll’s Customs, who’s touched quite a few things on this S2000. The icing on the cake is the custom 4130 Fabrication dump-pipe, which exits out of the hood in a configuration. Loud noises! OCTOBER // NOVEMBER 2016

The aforementioned Mr. Croll also took his touch to the outside of Convington’s S2K. Those wide hips you see there aren’t molded on from a kit made by a 3D printer, these fenders are shaped the old school way - from metal. Now sitting an extra four-inches wider per side in the front and six-inches per side in the rear, the front Sorcery bumper, AP2 model rear bumper, and Voltex rear di° user would all need to be widened to meet up. As you can see, their reunion went smoothly. The added width allows for some serious hardware underneath, so Covington let none of the space go to waste. He optioned out some CCW Classic three-piece wheels in 18x11 in the front and a massive 18x13 in the rear, then wrapped that in some BFGoodrich KDW2 tires, 275/35 and 335/30 front and rear, respectively. To really seal

the deal on the visual e° ectiveness of the broad bodywork, Covington topped o° the rear with a J’s Racing 1,600-mm GT wing. Inside, if you can tear your eyes away from the Recaro Pole Position seats, gorgeous custom carbon fiber gauge pod setup, and “lucky cat” shift knob paired up with a boot that’s made entirely of Hundreds swim shorts, you’ll see that the Personal Neo Eagle steering wheel is on the “wrong” side of the cabin. This S2000 wasn’t an overseas import, this modification was made by the owner by choice. Moving the wheel over was actually the most challenging part of the build, Covington recalls. “Doing the right-hand-drive swap was an absolute mess,” he cringes. “Everything from getting incorrect parts and wires, to even missing or damaged pieces. To overcome a ton of

these issues, I had to purchase two to three of just about every piece to really make the swap perfect and show quality.” As I said before, the Honda S2000 is a special car that means something di° erent to everyone. Some see it as the pinnacle of sportscar technology, while others may just brush it o° as another Honda, but Convington’s feelings transcend even those surface opinions. For him, the S2K came along at just the right time in his life. “I purchased this vehicle at a really low point in my life,” Covington admits. “I didn't really have much going right. As I

started building my S2000, I realized that I wasn't only passionate about building it, but it really raised my spirits. This build has been with me for nine years and I've had a ton of ups and downs in life during that time, however, every moment I sit in my S2000 and fire it up, it has always left me smiling ear to ear.” And in that moment, the S2000 is more than a sportscar, and it’s more than Honda’s 50th anniversary celebration – it’s a nine-year labor of love that still manages to tick all the right boxes. I think that sums up Honda enthusiast ownership to a T.

ow does one even start when it comes to modifying a Honda? Out of all the platforms to wrench on, it seems as though the offerings from the aftermarket are almost endless for Hondas, no matter which direction you should decide to take. When you decide to build a Honda, you’re really spoiled for choice, and above all, it’s affordable. It’s the reason a vast number of us started on these platforms. For Jud Lagunas, he actually picked his four-door Civic EF sedan as an affordable family car. I’ll let him explain. “I purchased the car as a cheap, affordable, simple, JDM-style, old, boxy, gas saving family car,” Lagunas lists off. “I was the young, broke father of a

two-year-old. It was everything I needed, and parts are all over junkyards for EFs!” After picking up the faded red (more pink than anything) and beaten up EF, with a strangely spotless black interior, Lagunas couldn’t help but start to develop a vision of what this car could be if he put some work behind it. He couldn’t resist, as the Civic is in his wheelhouse of being old and Japanese. “I’ve been a die-hard car guy since my crawling days,” says Lagunas. “As I learned to read, I discovered Japanese cars and it stuck as my choice genre. I’m a true auto enthusiast, and I love and have built all makes and models, but nothing compares to my import passion. I mainly love the classics, pre-1990.” At the time of acquiring the Civvie sedan, Lagunas was a paint and body apprentice in a body shop for a few years. As you can imagine, the pinkish paint

and beaten body didn’t last long. In about three weeks, the car had been straightened out and received the bold and golden paintjob that it’s now known for, and giving it the moniker “Goldy.” Dropped on some new wheels and tires, plus the new paintjob, Lagunas was feeling pretty good about his new “family” car. So much so, that he decided he’d start up his own little car crew as a joke. He gave himself the humorous name “Squirrel Squad,” and started meeting new enthusiasts at meets. To his surprise, Lagunas ended up meeting enthusiasts that were likeminded and were interested in building some high quality show cars from their imports. Squirrel Squad went from a joke to a real thing, and became a driving force for Lagunas to chase his vision for the EF. “We fed off of each othe as motivation and had a great time doing it,” Lagunas recalls, smiling. “The vision I had for my car became more in-depth. This continued for fi e years, leading to today where I’m just wrapping up some of the final ouches it’ll receive for a the next few years.” Soon, another car had to come into the picture, as the family car was becoming a show car. most time intensive and challenging part of the EF’s build would have to be the engine bay, as it went through a few iterations. The single-cam D-series would be swapped out for a B-series dual, non-VTEC. Lagunas would go on to work on shaving and tucking the bay, plus repainting it in a creamy tan pearl shade, all on his own. He debuted his handiwork at Wekfest Houston 2013, which won no awards, but took home a lot of attention and appreciation from show goers. It had Lagunas in high spirits on his drive back home to San Antonio – until the unthinkable happened. “A fuel leak sparked a major fire ” he says, reluctantly remembering. “The hood latch was fi st to melt. I fought like a mad man to open the hood and put out the flames. With the help from an angel-like Walmart 18-wheeler driver, we got the fire out leaving only the new bay and front end destroyed. With no money to rebuild, I was crushed.” With years of handiwork down the drain in a matter of minutes, Lagunas was feeling hopeless with his vision of the final orm for EF more distant than ever. However, this is where having fantastic friends in your life pays off i spades. With help from his Squirrel Squad teammates and “H Car” and “Skunk” from San Antonio Imports, a benefit car sh w and dyno day was organized to help Lagunas get back on his feet and back under the hood of his beloved Civic. “[The benefit sh w] helped raise me the money I could use to invest in small projects and ultimately rebuild as soon as I could,” Lagunas says, beaming. “Seven months later, and right in time for Wekfest 2014, she was ready.” This iteration of the car is the closest to the one you see here, just not as dialed in and touched up. The bay was re-shaved and tucked with a B18A1 sitting cozy inside with a T3/T4 turbocharger setup bolted on to make up for the magical powers of VTEC not present. Lagunas also switched up his specialty of paint and body to wheel refinishing, picking up set of Image Billet 81 three-piece wheels and restoring them to his liking. The 9.5-inch wide wheels are stretched over some 205

width tires all around and tucked via Skunk2 camber kits in the front and rear. There are some interesting choices made on the exterior of the Civic, but it just lends to the uniqueness of this build. For one, Lagunas reversed the colors of his body and bay, making the outside a creamy tan color, while the engine bay took on the original gold for a neat contrast. The lip kit on the car is exactly what you’re not expecting, as their not specific for the EF whatsoever. The front lip has been retrofit ed from a 1993 Volvo, and the skirts come courtesy of a ’90 Honda Wagovan. The inside carries a throwback theme of brown leather and woodgrain, another telltale sign of La-

gunas’ appreciation for the classics. The Personal steering wheel’s woodgrain matches the custom inserts throughout the interior, and the Tenzo R seats up front are reupholstered in the same brown leather that now coats the rear seats and even the door cards. To really nail the vintage theme, the rear window dons some old school Auto Venetian blinds! Lagunas’ ride shows a few really important points that people should know when delving into the world of building their own car. For one, it takes a lot of time. You may see some “builds” happen in a matter of months on Instagram, but ones like these, built in garages by the hands of their owners can take years to get to where

they are now. Another point would be that you don’t need to stick to a rule book. Yes, Honda has a huge aftermarket, and they even have their own tuning arm, Mugen, but if you stay creative and make your own vision work, you set yourself even farther apart from the pack, like the Civic sedan you see here. Goldy is just about finished, or as Lagunas would say, “reached her final orm.” A few more finis ing touches, and then it’s on to something new! “Building hard-fit ed quality show cars is my passion, and this is just the beginning of my journey,” Lagunas says. If his next build is anything as quality as this EF, we wish him all the luck in the world.

he “Civic Type R” moniker is a title that resonates with every true car enthusiast out there, and even more so with the die-hard Honda fans. For many, the name immediately triggers a reminiscence of the first strictly performanceoriented Hondas of yesteryear, despite the fact that the Type R is a trim line that still exists among Civics up to the present day. The first Civic Type R, based on the EK4, rolled o° the Suzuka, Japan

assembly line in 1997, and that is where we begin our journey. The first production run of Type R Civics never quite made it to North American shores despite widespread fandom. For whatever reason, Honda decided that enthusiasts on the other side of the pond either weren’t ready or weren’t worthy of their bonafide road-going racecar, which left enthusiasts on our shores with limited options. The obvious option was to import one

from Japan, pay some shipping/importing fees and be on the road in some time. If you’re Lester Rivera, however, you take a di° erent approach: You build your own. Nine years ago, Rivera took ownership of the closest thing he could find to his dream Civic – the 1997 Honda Civic hatchback option o° ered widely throughout North America. While importing the famed Civic Type R was certainly an option, Rivera is the type to opt-in to the building process. Having built Civics previous to this one, he had a

solid idea of where he wanted to go with it. With a proper plan laid out, the long process of building his very own CTR began. When attempting to mimic Japan’s original Type R styling, Rivera wanted the initial exterior results to be as close to OEM spec as possible before jumping into any serious modifications. After getting ahold of as many JDM Civic Type R body parts as possible, the vision began to take shape. With OEM CTR front and rear bumpers, side skirts, wing, fenders and even door handles, the CTR clone looked like it just drove out of Suzuka’s factory. For most Honda fans, the conversion would be considered “complete” or “good enough” after swapping out the body panels and door handles. Luckily, Lester Rivera isn’t most Honda fans. After the body swap came the real challenge of this build: switching the driver’s seat to the

right side. In pursuit of a true CTR clone, swapping over to RHD was a must for Rivera if he wanted it to live up to his standards of authenticity. This process would prove to be the most diÿ cult part of the entire build. When asked if he faced any particularly tough challenges throughout the build process, Rivera seemed to chuckle reluctantly about it all. “Oh man did I have challenges,” he says, further hinting at the challenging nature of the build. “I have a lot of history with this car. Been through tough times in the past, but also good ones as well. Let’s just say we’ve been through a lot.” After 11 months in the hands of S1 Built, a shop based out of Clearwater, Florida, the Civic was back in Rivera’s hands with a shaved and tucked engine bay, and with the steering wheel on the JDM side. With instructions to make the conversion as close to the JDM version’s OEM specs as possible, S1 Built delivered. The interior change-over was flawless, from the RHD dash and pedal assembly right down to the authentic Civic Type R badge

Simple aest hetic enhancements like the First Molding Kevlar front lip and Top1 side splitters lend some street tuner style to the iconic hatchback

embedded in the dash. The vision had come to fruition, and for all intents and purposes Rivera’s car was a true clone of the JDM Civic Type R. Of course, not many enthusiasts desire the Civic Type R to keep it factory spec, so it wasn’t long after getting it back that the modifications began. Wanting to stay true to the Type R’s heritage and culture, Rivera kept modifications simple and tasteful, only choosing parts that would accentuate or enhance the true spirit of the Type R and stay true to its Honda roots. Simple aesthetic enhancements like the First Molding Kevlar front lip and Top1 side splitters lend some street tuner style to the iconic hatchback, and Euro Civic taillights with built-in rear fogs make for a subtle, yet attractive rear end style change. Suspension gets a reworking to stay updated with modern performance as well, thanks to a Blackworks Racing full suspension setup and subframe brace with Beaks bar, Function 7 control arms, and even the sway bar from an Integra Type R.

The sway bar isn’t the only thing that came from a donor Integra Type R. The Integra’s B18C engine, famous for its application in the JDM-spec Integra Type R of the same year, was dropped into the Civic Type R clone and mated with an Integra GSR 5-speed transmission. A variety of Password JDM, AEM and Skunk2 goodies decorate the shaved and tucked engine bay, staying true to the Honda’s origins and providing that extra boost in throttle response. Thanks to a handful of carefully selected parts, the help and inspiration of family and friends, and some valuable know-how, the final product is a Civic that Honda fans everywhere would envy.

While many of us would consider this car worthy of showroom floors, Rivera’s favorite part of the car is just driving it the way it was meant to be enjoyed. “I love to take it out when I have a chance and just drive with no specific place to go,” he says. “Just sit back and enjoy the ride.” The overall goal with this car was to keep it simple, road-going and reliable. By all accounts, Rivera seems to have succeeded. It’s just an added bonus that people love his car, saying it takes them back to a simpler time. “My intentions were to just build something I can drive anywhere and take my kids on fun rides,” Rivera says, laughing. We’re sure the kids love this one.
