WAYLENS SECURE360 WIFI DASH CAM Story & Photography by

Through the use of the Kickstarter platform, Waylens was able to launch their first camera, the Horizon (which is great, so check out our previous review), with almost 11 times its $55,000 funding goal. Now, Waylens has produced another crowd-backed camera, but this time, it’s packed with all kinds of great security features and a new, groundbreaking type of lens. There was so much demand that it exceeded funding by 610 percent, after all.

M

eet the Secure360, which is like the bigger, more paranoid brother to the Horizon. Where the Horizon is happy to come along for spirited driving stints, road trips, and track sessions, the Secure360 wants to make sure you get to your destination safely, and then offers to stay in the car when you park, just in case of suspicious characters lurking around. As its name hints, this camera offers 360-degrees of protection.

FEATURES Inside the domed head of the Secure360 is an HDR-equipped, f/2.0-aperture, 360-degree lens, backed by Sony’s fantastic CMOS image sensor; a package that makes for great recording performance during the day and in low-light situations, like night-time driving or dim parking lots. Similar to the Horizon, the Secure360 is host to an array of motion sensors, such as radar, three-axis accelerometer, gyro, and magnetometer, as well as a GPS module. Instead of recording pitch and roll on the track though, these are all used to record information in the incidence of a collision or theft.

The biggest draw, besides 360-degrees of coverage, is the 360 hours of active security while your car is off and parked. Instead of being powered by your car’s 12-volt port, as is usually the case with most dash cams, the Secure360 is wired in by way of a USB-C cable that splits off into connections for battery, accessory, and ground. This direct power connection provides a watchful eye for approximately 15 unattended days, all without draining your battery. When your car is left alone and shut off, the Secure360 will shift into its low-power parking mode, keeping all those sensors primed in case of a bump or jostle. If someone

mistakenly backs into your car or the window is smashed to grab a valuable you forgot to bring with you, the Secure360 jumps into action to record the whole thing. Videos are all recorded directly to a micro-SD card (unfortunately not supplied), and can be accessed on your smartphone via Waylen’s Secure360 app (free download). After downloading the app from the Play Store or App Store and registering for a Waylens account, you can connect your phone to the newly mounted and wired Secure360 via its own WiFi signal. Enter in the password on your user manual, and you’re then able to view live video from the camera from your phone, as well as watch recorded video after the fact. Videos can be edited and exported from the app as well. IMPRESSIONS I’ll admit that it’s a bit weird, at first, to see both what’s in front of you and yourself in the driver’s seat at the same time, but it’s also really cool, especially since

it’s coming through my mounted phone’s screen while I’m driving. I chose to use this split view for my review of the dash cam, but there is also an option to view the feed in panoramic, if you so choose. I had some errands to run, and then I was off to my girlfriend's place to hangout, so I’d have plenty of driving, plus some parking time, and then I would test out the

“Night Vision” on my way back home that evening. With the white GPS light actively flashing here and there, and the red recording light beaming solid red, I set out on my day of travelling. The 15-minute drive to the hobby shop was uneventful, all the way up to the halfway mark, where a couple goons, ironically in a Smart Car,

decided to punch it out of their driveway and turn in front of me as I came down a hill section. It was far enough off that I could get on the brakes, but if it was just a bit closer, there may have been some trouble. I was oddly calm about it since I had the Secure360 set up. If there was an accident, I’d have a wide, clear picture of what happened to show to police and insurance, and that’s a nice peace of mind to have in any situation. After shaking my head, I made the rest of the journey, parking at the shop and then again at a gas station to get a car wash. No thugs came by to case the car, thankfully. Each time I got back in, the camera would light up with the ignition and make a camera shutter sound to let me know it was active before automatically connecting and displaying back to my phone with the app open. So cool. A relatively easy highway jaunt into the country and a nice evening later, it was time to test out the Night Vision capabilities of the Secure360, which shifts the camera's recording from full color to black and white, and makes use of the lens’ aperture. While I couldn’t see myself in the cabin as I did in the day, with the aid of headlights, the low-light performance of the Secure360 was better than other dash cams that I’ve tested at night. As I got out of the country, onto the highway, and started moving through towns, the streetlights made the visibility that much better in the pitch black. A parking lot with a lamp or a dim,

connection to. There was some buffering here and there, but nothing irritating. The microphone on the Secure360 is also great, picking up music or podcasts that were played, my girlfriend and I chatting in the car, and even some engine noise and supercharger whine. Color me impressed.

CONCLUSION Impressive output and exclusive 360 technology aside, if you’re looking for a clever and intuitive dash cam to use for your daily commutes or weekend road trips, plus the added bonus of a guard dog while you’re parked, I couldn’t recommend the Secure360 enough. It’s easily one of the most user-friendly and best-looking cameras I’ve had the pleasure of testing that really instills a peace of mind, whether you’re in or out of the car.

spend enough time in an industry so focused on improvement, innovation, and standing out amongst the crowd, it’s only a matter of time before that ethos begins to transcend into your everyday life. For George Babers, Logistics Manager at JL Audio, the audio company’s drive to excel rubbed off on him and his car building process almost immediately. “I just like the idea of taking something to the next level,” he tells us proudly. “I enjoy the pride in saying I did something cool.” And something cool is exactly what he did. Babers’ family has a long history with GM cars, including a few Camaros. “I had a 1991 RS that was given to me by my uncle,” he reminisces. “Unfortunately it was wrecked and I ended up getting another third gen. I bought a 1986 IROC-Z that I eventually sold to buy a Trailblazer SS.” His trail-blazing hiatus from Camaros was short lived, because as soon as the fifth generation Camaro was debuted in 2009 as a 2010 model, he knew he had to have one. A few short years later, he acquired the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS you see here. “I love the look and driving feel of the Camaro,” exclaims Babers. “The technology with GM has progressed so much in the last 25 years.”

Technology is exactly what Babers specializes in, so it's only natural the beginning of his build consisted of car audio. A full system from front to back provides the tunes and in-car entertainment for the Camaro, all of which is directly fed from the Camaro’s OEM head unit. A wide array of speakers take up the space in the door and rear deck pods, including JL Audio’s C5-075ct tweeters, C7-650 mid-bass drivers, C7-350 component mid-range speakers, and C5-570x rear stage speakers. Safe to say there is sufficient music-pumping surface area in the cockpit. Driving additional power to the multiple speaker sets is a pair of amplifiers, a VX600/6i and a VX400/4i, both JL’s works of art, and set in a transparent trunk setup alongside them is a VX1000/1i to power two 12w6v3 subwoofers, each of which is installed in a JL Audio Stealthbox enclosure, one on each side of the truck. Tying all of it together to keep things sounding natural and clean is a VXi DSP, which takes care of the entire system’s signal. All in, it makes for one seriously loud Camaro. Of course, an audio system itself wasn’t enough to keep Babers’ modification itch at bay, and it was soon time to make the engine sounds as good as the audio. “A few people said I needed to match my engine performance with the audio system,” he laughs. “I guess the supercharger was inevitable.” With plans to install the supercharger himself before getting everything properly tuned, a bit of

research was needed, but Babers says installing the parts themselves isn’t as hard as some people make it out to be. “If you can change your oil and brakes on a car, you can install a supercharger,” he quips. With a little help from TS Performance, the supercharger was on the engine. Once bolted up, the Magnuson TVS2300 supercharger kit just needed a few supporting mods to deliver consistent power on demand. The fuel pump from a Camaro ZL1, some Siemens Deka V EV1 840cc injectors, an SLP Nightwing intake tube, and NGK spark plugs keep the fuel, air flow, and spark working in harmony with the blower, and a Billy Boat exhaust gives the entire assembly some room to breathe. AS THE

teacher drones on and on, your imagination begins to wander - eventually transporting you to an alternate reality where an enemy is invading and, as the titular hero, you’ll need to defend yourself, your school, and your classroom crush. When you’re broken out of your boredominduced trance via a ruler smack on the desk and a class-wide laugh, there’s the initial sting of embarrassment, but none of them know that they’re only safe due to your heroics in fighting off the baddies. Anyone who’s had their head in the clouds before can identify with that situation, and Jhae Pfenning is no different, except his favorite day dream was flying around in those clouds in his personal Veritech fighter. For those uninitiated, a Veritech fighter is the transformable fighter jet from the Macross (Japanese anime) or Robotech (English adaptation) universe, and Pfenning’s dream was to pilot the lead VF-1S Valkyrie that the series is known for. Fast forward to high school, and Pfenning was chasing after a fighter jet with four wheels this time: the Acura NSX. It is inspired by the F-16, after all. After spotting the infamous NSX with the vanity plate “INUKEM” around town, rumored to belong to the owner of ID Software (Duke Nukem, DOOM) at the time, and being lucky enough to sit in an NSX on the showroom floor, Pfenning decided it was perfect for him and vowed to own one one day. Years later, he made good on the promise. The NSX that Pfenning brought home in 2012 was Berlina Black with Camel interior, and the previous owner had already had the NA2 conversion done, so no more pop-up headlights. Some friends had advised him to keep it the way he received it, but there were already plans in motion, and now that Pfenning had his NSX, it was time to make his childhood dream of having his very own Veritech fighter come true as well. “Making the vehicle my own and making sure it doesn’t look like any other NSX out there has always been the goal,” Pfenning explains. “One could debate on the tastefulness of a printed vehicle wrap, but underneath the wrap, there’s a meticulously-built Berlina black NSX that hopefully is regarded by many as being as good as there is out there.”

The wrap Pfenning mentioned is one that he designed himself. He set out to make something tailored to the design of the NSX, while also heavily influenced by the VF-1S Valkyrie from his dreams. To achieve this, he slowly taught himself Photoshop skills to make concepts, while studying scale models of the fictional fighter jet, as well as visiting aircraft museums to take photos of F-14 Tomcats, which the Macross jet is based off of. Almost a full calendar year later, Pfenning had a design that reflected the lines of the NSX and reflected the details of the VF1S, all the way down to the rivets, U.N. Spacy roundel, and even some rescue instructions near the driver door handle. After learning the ins and outs of Photoshop enough to design vehicle wrap templates, it was on to Autodesk Fusion 360, where Pfenning would design parts for his interior in the software and 3Dprint them into reality. Having a helping hand wiring for him, while another allowed him to print what he designed, the NSX’s interior resulted in a blend of anime fighter jet and F-14. A heavy dose of

carbon fiber has been applied, by way of the Pride Carbon door cards and the Tillet B5 bucket seats - the latter of which features 3D-printed “seat ejection” panels accurate to the anime. Below the Clarion NX807 head unit are a custom arrangement of illuminated buttons and toggle switches that spread down the center console, while just above the steering wheel, mounted to the top of the column, is a heads-up display that Pfenning designed and rigged up himself. A host of camera systems also make up more displays around the cockpit, like the Clarion CC520 in the front bumper, the Papago S780 dash cams in the front and rear, and the Owl Camera secu-

Underneath the Veritech skin is a performance-oriented NSX that’s built with quality parts. Under the hood, a combination of a LoveFAB LF-600 Garrett

3076R turbo kit, titanium headers, custom exhaust system, plus an AEM F/I controller, and Science of Speed tune result in a respectable 400 wheel-horsepower from Honda’s C32B V6 engine. Lightweight Forgeline EX1 wheels in unison with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires in staggered 18- and 19-inch sizing hold none of the performance back, while a Futura Design BBK, eight-piston in the front and six-piston in the rear, brings the “VF-1SNSX” back to base after a successful mission. One mission that Pfenning is particularly proud of is attend-

ing Anime Expo and meeting the creators of Robotech, who loved his car so much that they invited him to come visit at Harmony Gold Studios in Hollywood, California, where the series was produced. Six years since starting the project born out of his childhood fantasy and a car he had pined after for almost 20 years, Pfenning’s efforts were validated by the very people responsible for exposing him to the world of Macross and Robotech that he fell in love with in the first place. for a new daily driver, but still wanting to keep it fun and shift her own gears, Justus landed at a Subaru dealer and in the seat of a new WRX. Loving the performance and smooth, short shifts, she left that day with ideas to change up the appearance of her newly-acquired WRX; nothing big. Justus had built a showworthy Civic years ago, and still dabbled in some motorbike bolt-ons here and there, but those days were behind her or so she thought. The thought mill kept turning as she arrived home and started chatting with her boyfriend, Brandon Burrell. Burrell has built quite a few custom cars in his day, even having one of his trucks featured in PASMAG Trucks a few years ago, so, naturally, he pushed for more outlandish modifications, even throwing the word “SEMA” into the mix as the two came up with a list of things they’d like to do. As they continued to talk, these fantasy mods moved more into the realm of reality and the gofast grocery getter quickly became a show-stopping concept. “After only a few months, the car was completely gutted and then transformed into what it is today,” says Justus, thinking back. “I didn’t get my ‘grocery getter’ as originally planned, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Enhancing the Dark Gray Metallic exterior of the WRX are some seriously impressive custom headlights by Plain An Simple. Using Diode Dynamics’ “Demon Eyes” and LED bulbs, while converting the LED “C-lights” to switchbacks, these headlights paired with

BOTTOMS the dual six-inch light bar setup behind the middle Grillcraft grille make for a menacing appearance when the sun goes down. Beginning the red bottoms theme of the car are some Rotiform HUR three-piece wheels in 20x8.5, with brushed candy red faces and brushed gray barrels. For those wondering about what “red bottoms” even are and how it applies to footwear, it’s in reference to Christian Louboutin’s signature design of a dark heeled shoe with a bright red sole. The story goes that in the early ‘90s, Louboutin had just received a prototype of the latest heel he had designed, but was let down by how the physical shoe failed to match what he envisioned from his drawing. Fatefully, his assistant was painting her nails red at the time, so in a moment of inspiration, he grabbed the bottle of nail polish and coated the sole of the heel in red, feeling then that what he had created measured up to his concept. From then on, red bottoms have been synonymous with Louboutin. Some red wheels on a dark gray car isn’t exactly enough to call it a red bottoms theme, but that’s being said before opening up the doors and taking a peek into the interior. Inside is a stunning contrast, as mostly everything has been reupholstered, coated, or wrapped in a bright red. Roadwire’s red and black leather covers transform the front and rear seats and some interior panels, while red vinyl is wrapped on the lower half of the dash, and red suede makes up the new headliner. RED

BOTTOMS customized door frames are two sets of Memphis Car Audio M-Class 6.5-inch components up front, with another set split between the rear doors, which are all rimmed by red LED strip lighting. Even some cubbies have been hollowed out for the Air Lift Performance air suspension system controller and Cobb Accessport tuner in a custom panel, just below the climate controls. The theme carries through into the trunk as well, which, as well as the interior, was masterminded by the crew at Ultimate Audio SC. With the trunk popped, the red bottoms theme, plus Memphis audio gear and the air suspension system components are all blended together seamlessly in a fantastic display. Behind glass, in the bottom of the boot, are two of Memphis’ MOJO 12-inch subwoofers, and just above is a little alcove for the Air Lift management. Two Memphis capacitors on either side compliment the symmetrical design, and the trunk lid isn’t left out of the

equation either, housing a fourth set of M-Class components in red suede. The whole deal is illuminated by red LEDs, which makes it that much more dramatic under low light. Of course, all the work that went into the interior of the car to tie her theme together is Justus’ favorite aspect, but stopping just short of that are stealthily-installed HornBlasters train horns in the front that she likes to have fun with. “There’s nothing like cruising down the Vegas strip and honking the train horns, while most people think it’s the lifted truck behind me,” she giggles. Through months of hustle, the team behind Justus has allowed her Red Bottoms WRX to attend SEMA twice since 2016, which is certainly something to be said for a car that was supposed to be used for spirited errand runs. Together, Justus and Burrell have produced something that Louboutin would never need to slather an ounce of red nail polish on.

One of the more fascinating aspects of today’s technology is how everything seems to be able to integrate and work together to make our lives simpler and hopefully easier. Well, the folks at Pioneer have released the 2018 NEX series of source units, and

with the AVIC-W8400NEX comes yet another new feature that has never been available in a car radio before. Thanks to Apple CarPlay’s integration of Siri, the AVICW8400NEX can be used with your Apple HomeKit smart home devices or, if you’re an Android user, Android Auto now includes Google Assistant, providing a link to other

Google-Assistant-compatible smart home devices. This allows you to check the status and actually control those devices directly from your car.

FEATURES

In addition to the smart home device interface, the Pioneer unit also includes all the typical bells and whistles, including navigation functionality. You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity in either wired or wireless modes. These features allow you to basically take the interface of your smartphone and put it on the screen of the radio. This means that when your smartphone is connected (wired or wirelessly), you can have your text messages read to you or have the voice-totext function of your phone send texts. It also allows the use of Siri or Google Assistant and apps on your phone, like Spotify, with voice control. The AVIC-W8400NEX comes with Pandora built in, as well as HD Radio and AppRadio Mode, which allows you to download apps. It’s iDatalink Maestro compatible and SiriusXM ready

(devices sold separately), with full Bluetooth functionality. The navigation system uses maps from HERE and can hold up to 16 GB of map data. The included maps cover all of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, with over 7.2 million POIs. Maps can be displayed in 2D or 3D modes, and include 3D landmarks, city maps, lane information, and even free Lifetime Traffic from Total Traffic Network. For those who prefer to supply their own digital media, the AVIC-W8400NEX plays back CD, DVD, WMA, WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, MPEG 1, 2, and 4 video, as well as AVI/DivX video. The media can be brought to the Pioneer on DVD, CD, SD card, or USB drive, and there is an HDMI input and two auxiliary wired inputs, plus dual camera inputs. This unit isn’t likely to leave many people wanting for a way to be entertained!

CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONALITY

In terms of daily use, I really like the Pioneer’s easy and logically laid out touchscreen. All the controls are intuitive to find and easy to use. The touchscreen

It’s also highly customizable, with 13 backgrounds, a splash screen, and over 100 color choices for the backlit buttons. You can also customize the home screen with your favorite shortcuts, making common selections a snap. The display can also simply be turned off to minimize distraction when driving at night. If you need to entertain back seat occupants, the AVICW8400NEX has dual-zone rearseat entertainment, so the kids can watch a video while you listen to music or the ball game. There are three sets of RCA pre-outs, a 13-band customizable equalizer, selectable high- and low-pass filters with four possible slopes, and a special network mode that allows a bandpass

mode to be used in conjunction with high-pass and low-pass filters, thereby potentially eliminating the need for passive networks. By adding Pioneer’s CD-MC20 auto-EQ microphone, you can also take advantage of time alignment and auto EQ capabilities. A listening position selector and Pioneer’s Advanced Sound Retriever round out the adjustment section.

LISTENING

For my listening evaluation, I connected the Pioneer to my reference system and, suitably armed with a dozen or so CD’s, a few DVD’s, my smartphone and my iPod, I sat down and did a two-hour listening session. I have to say, I emerged from my listening room suitably impressed. The overall sonic performance is very good, especially when playing back FLAC and even MP3 tracks from my iPod. The bottom end is well defined and

authoritative, especially in songs like Billy Idol’s Prodigal Son or Thomas Dolby’s Key to Her Ferrari. Vocals and acoustic instruments sound open and natural, and the top end of the register is all there with plenty of brilliance and detail, without sibilance.

ON THE BENCH

As is typical of Pioneer’s NEX series, the AVIC-W8400NEX has

exemplary audio performance from either the built-in amplifier or the pre-out section. Internal amp power measured well above the CEA-2006-rated 14 watts, and thanks to the 24-bit D/A converter, the frequency response and signal-to-noise were as good as some home audio players. Unclipped preamp output voltage is 3.7V, and the output impedance is below 100 ohms.

CONCLUSION

Anyone who is embracing a smartphone concentric lifestyle and needs a DVD/navigation receiver that has virtually every feature one could ask for, the Pioneer AVIC-W8400NEX would leave very few people wanting for anything more. From the ease of use and astounding selection of available media sources, to the functionality of smart home device control and the convenience of complete smartphone wireless integration, it really leaves very little to wish for. Technology marches on, however, and in the not too distant future, there might be a new feature or function to pine for, but right now, I can’t imagine what it would be.

JL AUDIO VX700/5i With all the technology and capability built into the JL Audio VX700/5i, plus the fact that you only need one of them for your whole system, this is likely to be a very popular amplifier.

AMPLIFIER REVIEW

E

very once in a while, a product comes along that’s truly innovative and could represent the future of the category. In my opinion, such a product is the VXi Series of amplifiers from JL Audio. By teaming up with microprocessor manufacturer AKM, they have brought to market a series of amplifiers that combine powerful DSP processing with JL’s NexD2 Class-D technology. For this review, JL Audio sent us a sample of the new VX700/5i a five-channel amp that can easily drive an entire audio system.

FEATURES

The VX700/5i is built into a relatively small chassis, measuring only 250-mm long, 168-mm wide, and 54-mm high. With this small of a footprint, it will be easy to find an appropriate mounting location, but despite its size, the VX700/5i packs some serious power. Rated at 75 x 4 + 180 x 1 into four ohms, or 100 x 4 + 300 x 1 into two ohms, the amp will satisfy even enthusiastic listeners. If you need more power, however, there is a VX1000/5i as well…

Connections are typical classy JL fare. The speaker outputs and signal input connections are accomplished via multi-pin connectors that lock into place once connected. The pigtails are covered in a braided sheath, and the printed heat shrink is used to ID the individual connections. Power is connected by a heavyduty three-terminal block that accepts up to four-gauge power wire, which then plugs into the amp. The VX700/5i is equipped with JL’s differential-balanced inputs, which dramatically reduce the chance of unwanted noise entering the system. This innovative circuit measures the center pin of the RCA connection relative to the RCA shield. Because both the center conductor and the shield see high impedance to ground at the input, a ground loop cannot be formed, but the real beauty of this system is that it works with balanced or unbalanced signal sources, making this input architecture compatible with all standard car and marine audio equipment. No special cables are required, unlike the fully balanced connections used in professional

audio. It also allows the inputs of the amplifier to be compatible with a very wide voltage range of input signals, from as low as 200mV to as much as 16 volts! An optical Toslink connection is also provided to allow direct connection to S/PDIF digital sources up to 24 bit/192 kHz. Unlike its competition, there are no adjustment controls on the amp whatsoever. All of the signal routing, level control, and frequency shaping is done via JL Audio’s clever and intuitive TüN DSP software. The software is free to download and play with, and there are apps for iOS and PC computers, as well as iOS and Android tablets and phones, with an optional Bluetooth communicator. DSP software can be complex and intimidating, but I found the TüN software to be intuitive and easy to use and understand. TECH DATA The following power measurements were obtained as follows: (100 HZ @ 1.0% THD+N - Battery voltages shown, +/- 0.1V)

To try and thoroughly review the TüN software functionality would take a review or two all by itself, but I will do my best to give you an idea of the vast range of capabilities available here: • Signal routing is easy with intuitive graphics in the software. You can basically route any input to any output or multiple outputs. • Muting of individual or all channels. • Gain is fully adjustable, complete with clip indicators. • Channels can be linked together to simplify adjustments common to multiple channels. • Crossover filtering accommodates all-pass, high-pass, low-pass and bandpass configurations. Selectable slopes and various alignments are included, from 6 to 48 dB/octave in 6-dB increments. • Depending on the tuning mode selected, you can have a 10-band graphic EQ, or a fully Parametric version. • Phase/Polarity control • Individual channel delay in 0.01 millisecond increments.

The NexD2 Class-D topology permits the use of surface-mount DirectFET devices for a smaller footprint, better efficiency, and less radiated noise. Additionally, the NexD2 circuitry allows for improved capacitor placement and shorter circuit paths inside the amp. With this much power and such a small footprint, JL Audio’s exclusive Advanced Rollback Thermal Protection is employed to monitor the amplifier’s thermal condition and adjust the operation to eliminate unwanted thermal shutdowns that could interrupt your music.

LISTENING

For my listening test, I set up the amplifier using the TüN software with the final configuration much as I’d set up a conventional amplifier. The goal was to listen to the amplifier’s musicality, not to play with the DSP. I set the main channels to 50 Hz high pass, with a Butterworth alignment and second order (-12 dB/oct) slopes. The subwoofer channel was set to 80 Hz low pass, at -24 dB/oct. As usual, when evaluating the sonics of a DSP-powered product, one of the first things I do is listen for an audible noise floor. I’m happy to say that the VX700/5i is nice and quiet between tracks and during silent passages. To get started, I began my listening with a true test for any amp running a full system: the Atlanta Symphony playing Introit and Kyrie from Requiem Opus 48. This track is an excellent test for how well an

amplifier can reproduce complex choral voices and a full symphony orchestra at the same time. The JL Audio amplifier performs very well, and the result is an incredibly satisfying listening experience. I moved on to more current, but equally difficult tunes, like the soft passages and sense of space in the Cowboy Junkies’ Trinity Sessions, recorded with the band standing around a microphone in The Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto, Canada. The recording captured the ambience of the room, and the VX700/5i reproduced it with excellent realism. The listening evaluation process continued, listening for any telltale signs of a Class-D design, such as high frequency harshness or added high frequency noise. I found nothing at all to complain about, which is to say, the JL Audio amp proves to be natural and realistic sounding, with plenty of power to handle high dynamics and the ability to be very quiet when it’s supposed to be. All in all, this is a very good sounding amplifier, regardless of topology.

ON THE BENCH

On the unforgiving Cogent Audio Labs test bench, the VX700/5i exceeds the published power specifications. Backing up my listening experience, the signal-tonoise performance is very good for a DSP-powered Class-D amplifier, and in fact better than some analog amps I’ve measured. hat’s off to the engineering team. Wideband frequency response is also excellent, with the amp rolling off gently well beyond the upper limit of audibility. The bench testing proved that the five-channel amp can be driven by virtually any

source unit or OEM amp in existence and has excellent thermal performance thanks to the high efficiency design, while the clever Advanced Rollback scheme allows the amp to continue to play when others would simply shut off.

CONCLUSION

With all the technology and capability built into the JL Audio VX700/5i, plus the fact that you only need one of them for your whole system, this is likely to be a very popular amplifier. Add in the ability to interface into virtually any OEM, aftermarket, or digital source, as well as the ability to be tuned and configured to perfection, this really could be the beginning of a whole new era in car audio.

ecently, my friend Elle bought a new pickup truck with a typically abysmal factory stereo system. Not wanting to make big modifications to her brand-new ride, she said she could live with the general sound of the system if only she could add some desperately needed bass, however, the interior of the cab didn’t offer much room for a traditional truckstyle subwoofer box or amplifier. The space the truck had had already been mostly spoken for by the search and rescue gear she normally hauls, so what she needed was an incredibly compact, self-powered subwoofer system. my admittedly modest expectations. The system has exceptional woofer control, and the bass is tight and accurate sounding. As you might expect, the laws of physics still apply, so the system lacks overall output when compared to a big woofer in a big box with a big amp, but the performance it delivers is far better than having no woofer at all. In general, I was quite impressed with the sonic performance of the small woofer system. I think it will surprise Elle when I get it installed in her truck, where the vehicle’s transfer function will increase the output of the lowest octaves. It also occurred to me that because it’s so small, and the current demand is so low, it wouldn’t be too difficult to install two of these, one under each seat, to really add some bottom end authority! As it is, I liked it well enough that I’m thinking about picking up one for bass reinforcement in my home racing simulator.

CONCLUSION heat resistant cone material is employed. To ensure the woofer is rugged and durable, JVC used computer simulations to develop the shape of the woofer’s spider and provide a more consistent pressure across its diameter. The internal amplifier is rated at 150 watts continuous, with a frequency response of 35 Hz to 150 Hz. The amplifier receives audio signal via RCA or high-level inputs, making it easy to interface into the factory outputs of Elle’s truck. A wired remote control with large, easy-to-adjust controls allows adjustability of sub output level, crossover frequency, and phase. The wiring harness is plenty long enough to reach the vehicle’s fuse box, where it can be connected easily because it draws less than 10A of current. In fact, during my testing, I noted that the system

rarely drew more than four or five amps, even at high volumes. Installation is a simple matter of choosing a location, running power, ground, and input signal wires, and then tuning it for the vehicle via the wired remote control. There are no adjustments on the cabinet itself.

LISTENING

Obviously, with such a diminutive system, I wasn’t expecting earth moving bass, but I was hoping for some added warmth and dimension to the music that most factory systems desperately need. After getting it connected and tuned to suit my room and the rest of my system, however, I was quite surprised at the overall quality of the sound. I began with of my favorite tracks from Yello’s Essential, and then moved on to Level 42’s

World Machine and a couple of other tracks with strong, well-defined bass. On these intentionally bass-heavy tracks, the compact woofer system provides reasonably good output, and a bit lower frequency output than I expected. I then moved on to some classic rock tracks from Rush, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, and The Who. The performance of the JVC system was a bit surprising, and it definitely exceeded

Simply owning a Mosconi amplifier automatically makes you a member of a pretty exclusive club, and the Gladen PRO 5/30 is an amplifier that has few rivals in terms of sonic performance and exclusivity.

o those who prefer to take a no compromise approach to their car audio system and insist on equipment that’s generally above reproach, the name Mosconi is quite familiar. Relative newcomers to the car audio market, the first Mosconi amplifiers were introduced to Italy in 2009. Since then, the brand has experienced global acclaim and is now being sold all over the world, including here in the United States. Driven by a love for sound and technology, Mosconi brought together a team of designers and engineers with decades of audio experience, who continually explore ways to improve their products, all in the interest of premium quality sound. I was recently fortunate enough to receive a Mosconi Gladen PRO amplifier for evaluation, and the following review should provide some insight into the passion that sets these guys apart from the rest of the crowd - and maybe why a lot of us consider the Italians just a little bit nuts!

The Mosconi Gladen PRO 5/30 continues the brand’s tradition of exclusivity, as indicated by the $1,999.99 USD price tag. The PRO 5/30 is a five-channel design with hybrid-type topology. For optimum sound quality, Class-AB circuitry is used for full range channels, with higher efficiency and higher power Class-D circuitry making up the subwoofer channel. The combination of topologies takes full advantage of each type of circuitry to provide the best sound possible from a single amplifier chassis.

FEATURES

The Gladen PRO 5/30 uses a split power level architecture. At four ohms, channels one and two are rated at 70 watts each, while channels three and four have a 150-watt rating. The subwoofer channel is rated at 550 watts into four ohms, or about 900 watts into two ohms. two. Channels three and four have high-pass, low-pass, or bandpass crossover functions. The fifth channel utilizes a fourth-order (-24 dB/oct) low-pass filter. There are also signal steering switches that allow you to run the channels with just a single pair of RCAs, up to fully discrete inputs with fading functions. A gain pot for each pair of channels rounds out the control features. For maximum reduction in noise and distortion, you can press a button to engage “Direct DSP” mode, which bypasses the whole front end, right up to the fully differential input. Wiring connections are accomplished via sturdy setscrew-type terminal blocks that are deep enough to ensure fully insulated connections. The power terminals will accept 1/0-gauge power cables, and eight-gauge speaker wires. A 150-amp mini ANL-type fuse lets you know this amp means business. With an abundance of power, and a large percentage of it being developed

in Class AB, keeping the amplifier cool is of primary concern. To that end, the Gladen PRO 5/30 is equipped with an internallymounted, extruded aluminum heatsink with tall, thin fins that dissipate heat very well. To add even more cooling capacity for even the most enthusiastic situations, the heat sink’s capabilities are augmented with a pair of 60-mm fans drawing cool air in and pushing it out the ends of the amp. Internally, the amplifier is an all MOSFET design with high current capability and plenty of reserve current capacity for good dynamics. There are eight MOSFET devices for the power supply section and 16 MOSFET outputs, which result in a total of 24. The components inside are high quality, and a mixture of surface-mount and through-hole components are used. The amplifier is ruggedly constructed and obviously designed to be very reliable.

For my auditioning of the Gladen PRO 5/30, I used the amplifier to drive two pairs of high-end components and a single 12-inch subwoofer. With the gains adjusted so that channels one and two had the same levels as three and four, I simply left the AB channels in all-pass mode and adjusted the sub crossover to 80 Hz. When I finally got down to some serious listening, the hybrid amplifier

certainly didn’t disappoint, providing authoritative power and superb sound quality. I listened to my usual eclectic variety of music and found the Mosconi amplifier always up to the task. Even at enthusiastic levels, I was listening with an average output power of maybe only 20 percent of what was available, and the amplifier provides excellent sound. The timbre of the amplifier is very neutral and it produces a very good stereo image. I enjoy testing good amps with more difficult tracks, like tunes with a lot of dynamic range and a very wide frequency range. To that end, I broke out my Sheffield Labs copy of The Usual Suspects, and then a couple of big band tracks from Count Basie and Tommy Dorsey on a DMP recording. Large orchestras have the ability to reach higher than normal SPL levels, and for a stereo system to have a lifelike sound, it needs to

be able to reproduce rapid shifts in overall sound level. If an amp has poor signal-to-noise, the quiet passages can be obscured by hiss, and if the amp has limited power, it will clip before the full volume of the recording is reached, with the usual audible distortion. As you would expect, none of these issues were found with the Mosconi. Quiet passages are dead silent; even with my ear to the tweeter I did not hear the noise floor. I spent about three hours listening to some of my most revealing music, and

when I was done, I walked away pleased and impressed.

PERFORMANCE/ BENCH MEASUREMENTS

The next morning, I moved the Mosconi back into the test lab and connected it to my calibrated measurement equipment. As I expected from my listening session, the amp measured well and met its published performance specifications, which are surprisingly realistic in today's exaggerated market.

CONCLUSION

Simply owning a Mosconi amplifier automatically makes you a member of a pretty exclusive club, and the Gladen PRO 5/30 is an amplifier that has few rivals in terms of performance and exclusivity. Regardless of the exclusivity, like all Mosconi products, its primary focus is sonic performance. If you share that focus and have the wherewithal to join the club, the Mosconi would be an excellent choice.

ARC Audio's outstanding PS8 processor gets the PRO treatment, making it one of the most powerful tuning tools on the market with literally too many features and functions to list.

everal years ago, I was introduced to the Arc Audio PS8 digital signal processor. I listened to it for the first time in a demo car at CES that year and was really impressed; impressed enough that when I built my Corvette Grand Sport’s audio system, I used a PS8 for my tuning. Fast forward a few years, and Arc Audio have come up with a brand-new piece to augment their already excellent lineup. The new unit is called the PS8-PRO, and it takes the abilities and performance of the older unit to a whole new level. There are many subtle performance differences between the first generation PS8 and the new PS8-PRO, but here are a few real game changers:

• There are sample rate convertors at each input, optimizing the digital throughput for each input, individually, which allows for the unheard-of ability to play a mix of analog and digital inputs, simultaneously! • A new Input Integration DSP panel in the software provides level adjustment, time correction, EQ, and channel blending for every input channel, individually. This allows correction of OEM head unit signals and a true, flat, full-range input. Input voltage ranges from 0.5 volts to 32 volts of input signal!

I asked Arc Audio’s Fred Lynch for details on the PS8-PRO and what I learned was, like the PS8, the PS8-PRO’s technical mastermind is none other than the legendary Robert Zeff. As before, Zeff’s technical prowess was mixed with feedback from the team at ARC Audio USA, along with Lynch’s previous involvement with the original PS8 and extensive experience in tuning ultra-high-end

systems and competition cars, and the result is a brilliant blend of audio performance, adjustment capability, system design functionality, and true simplicity of use. This thing can handle virtually any tuning or system setup function you can think of. The basics go like this: the PS8-PRO is a small black box that is controlled and adjusted primarily by a laptop computer connected by a USB cable, Bluetooth, or even Wi-Fi. I say “primarily” because there are provisions to change settings and configurations with simple switches as well, allowing certain functions to be adjusted from the driver’s seat without a PC required. An optional remotemounted device called a “PSC” will also allow adjustments without connecting a computer. The software that comes with a PS8-PRO is some of the most intuitive processor software I have ever used, but it’s going to be intimidating for anyone who

doesn’t regularly work with tuning software, so those who have never tuned before should seek the assistance of a professional.

SOFTWARE & HARDWARE

The software is broken down into four distinct tabs, and then each of those has multiple sections of parameters to adjust. For example, if you go into the Integration DSP tab, you find sections for a parametric EQ, delay, and an integration mixer. Or in the Output DSP tab, you find crossovers, delay, one-third octave EQ, parametric EQ, output levels, tone controls, and remote configuration. You take it one tab and one page at a time to work your way through. To make things even easier, you can open up a graphical reference called the “Mixer Assistant” to assist in your setup. These assist panels will draw you a picture of the signal path for each channel,

At the bottom of the software page is a constantly displayed level indication system that allows you to monitor what’s going on at all times at various points of the signal path within the DSP. It will show you, at a glance, if the levels are too low, too high, or just right. The PS8-PRO is much more than your typical DSP processor. At the digital core is a highperformance, automotive-grade, user-programmable, fixed-point, 32-bit, End-to-End (from ADC to DAC), 12x12 DSP core designed specifically for the audio industry, which is capable of 96/192-kHz signal processing, with plenty of room for all the features needed for most any install. Coupled to the DSP core is a flexible DMA engine, which can move data between peripherals, such as the serial control port (SCP), digital audio input (DAI) and digital audio output (DAO), or any DSP core memory, all without the intervention of the DSP.

In addition to the car audio addiction I have, I also do a lot of work with professional live sound and studio products, as well as highend home audio. As a result, I have heard a lot of DSP processors. A few are very good, and some are, well, junk. One way I differentiate between the two is to listen for digital artifacts, or what I call “processed sound.” In this regard, the Arc Audio PS8-PRO is one of the most musical processors I have ever heard because when you listen to a properly tuned system through the PS8-PRO, you have no idea the signal is being manipulated. That sort of transparency is the trademark of a truly high-performance processor, and the PS8-PRO gets very high marks in that regard. This DSP sounds amazing, simply because you can’t hear it. From a technical, bench measurement perspective, the PS8-PRO is equally as impressive.

VU METERS One of my favorite features, and something that comes in very handy when tuning, are the onboard VU meters in the software. If it is out of date, there is an auto-update process to allow further operation and tuning. Thanks to a built-in fail safe protocol, there is no risk of catastrophic consequences should there be an accidental interruption of any kind during the update process. Lynch demonstrated this for me by first unplugging the USB cable during an update, and then removing the battery from his laptop during a subsequent demonstration. The system returned to its previous state without any lockups or crashes.

KICKER KEY180.4 AMPLIFIER REVIEW Anyone who wants to give their modest aftermarket system or bland OEM system a real kick should look no farther than the KEY180.4 from Kicker.

W

hen we think about adding an amplifier to a system, the obvious thing we’re adding is power to make our music louder. What if the amplifier not only provided the additional power we wanted, but also had the ability to make the system sound better, instead of just louder? The KEY Smart Amplifier from Kicker will do just that. Designed specifically to greatly improve the sonics of a typical “deck and four” or OEM sort of system, the Kicker KEY180.4 amplifier uses powerful digital signal processing to bring concert realism to your car. Unlike other systems, the KEY180.4 doesn’t need an expert tuner to get things right. Here’s why… TECH DATA

FEATURES

The Kicker KEY180.4 amplifier comes with an A.I.-driven DSP, a special microphone, and a selector switch. To automatically EQ and time align your system, all you need to do is place the microphone on the driver’s headrest and press the button. A special lab-grade pink noise track (free download from Kicker’s website) is played through your system, while the powerful processor determines speaker size, measures frequency response and arrival times from each speaker, and automatically makes the required adjustments. The key to how this digital wizardry works is in using a signal that the DSP already knows is flat. Then it measures

what is received by the microphone and automatically makes the required corrections. The onboard 40-band EQ makes the necessary corrections to the system’s frequency response, while the time correction places the sounds where the recording intended them to be. The process only takes a few minutes, and the result is startling with the soundstage lifted to the dash area, instead of simply coming from the doors. The amplifier itself is very compact, measuring 1.7 by 2.75 by 7.4 inches, but it still manages to pump out a respectable 180 watts of power (45x4 @ 4 ohms). The amplifier is a traditional fourchannel design, but it can also be configured in bi-amp mode to drive mids and tweeters with individual channels. When used in bi-amp mode, the Auto Detect function will automatically set the crossover to either 3.2 kHz or

In normal four-channel mode, there is a choice of three 24 dB/ oct high-pass crossover frequencies (60/80/120 Hz) or, of course, a full range setting. These settings are accomplished via dipswitches on the end panel of the amp. In addition to the crossover settings, dipswitches are also used to select the other functions, such as turn-on type, fader, bi-amp mode, Kicker EQ, and more. Another feature that will make the KEY180.4 a popular OEM system upgrade is Kicker’s Fail-Safe Integration Technology (FIT2). This includes the ability to turn the amp on and off via a traditional 12-volt wire or by using signal sensing, as well as work with just about any radio on the road, thanks to the FIT2's Radio-Detect circuitry. custom cabinets, the KEY180.4 sounds very transparent and offers no apparent sonic signature of its own. This is precisely what a good amplifier should do; simply amplify the signal, without adding any noise or alteration of the music. The KEY180.4 produces a good soundstage and phantom center image, which is a testament to good control of both the

inter-channel gain and the phase response of the amp. It sounds flat and very linear with respect to frequency response, with bass that goes deep and tight. Difficult tracks with a lot of female vocal, piano, horns, and acoustic guitar have very natural timbre and detail. I played everything from Bach to ZZ Top, and I came away very impressed. There is no audible

turn-on or turn-off noise, and even though I listened at enthusiastic levels for several hours, the amp barely got warm. This thing sounds natural and transparent, precisely the way a good amp should. Listening to the KEY180.4 in my normal listening room was a very pleasant experience, but because the room is already set up to be an almost ideal environment to listen in, I didn’t get a chance to hear for myself the remarkable differences the built-in DSP can provide. Unfortunately, I don’t own a vehicle with anything approaching a “deck-and-four” system, so I couldn’t play with the DSP for myself. Instead, I called a few trusted folks who were familiar with the product and had heard it for themselves. Every single person I talked to raved about how much better it made even a really basic OEM system sound. They all talked about how much higher the sound stage was, and how much better the stereo imaging was. Several also commented on how the overall smoothness of the sound had improved, and that the differences were anything but subtle. Knowing how much time and effort Kicker has invested in developing this technology, I have absolutely no reason to doubt the rave reviews.

CONCLUSION

Anyone who wants to give their modest aftermarket system or bland OEM system a real kick should look no farther than the KEY180.4 from Kicker. Without a doubt, it will offer a greater amount of sonic difference per dollar spent than almost anything else you could buy. Add in the compatibility with virtually any source and the dead simple automatic tuning, and the choice becomes even easier.

Depending on the specific car, you may have to deal with factory equalization, weird signal delays, unwanted crossover points, and in some cases, all of the above at once! FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS

The XR600-6DSP amplifier is a six-channel, bridgeable, ClassD amplifier, and is part of the premium performing eXcelon series. It has a relatively small footprint (12.6 inches wide x 2.1 inches high x 7.1 inches deep), so finding a spot for it should be quite easy. Connections are all made on one edge of the amp, and the terminals are all fully insulated and enclosed. After the connections are made, a nice trim cap covers all the screw access holes

for a smooth, clean look. In addition to the built-in power, there are two pairs of DSP-controlled RCA outputs that can be used to drive additional amplifiers. This approach allows the XR600-6DSP to be used as the cornerstone of even an ultrahigh-end, multi-amp system. The amp is rated at 75 watts x six into four ohms, and 100 watts x six into two ohms. In bridged mode, the power climbs to 200 watts x three into 4 ohms. Signalto-noise is advertised at 95 dB referenced to rated power. The Maestro AR module plugs into the front panel with a small four-pin connector, which includes the remote trigger-on for the amp, as well as the ground connection for the AR module.

Once flashed, with the Kenwood DSP Control app connected, the following audio adjustments are available via the 10-channel, 32bit, 192-kHz digital processor, for each channel independently: • Signal delay in 0.36-inch increments to a maximum of 20 feet. • 0 to 10 dB of gain adjustment. • 13-band graphic EQ. INSTALLATION

To install the Kenwood amp and iDatalink Maestro AR module, you will need a computer with Internet and ActiveX controls enabled. With the amp installed and wired as usual, connect the AR module to the computer via USB and navigate to the iDatalink Maestro website. From there, you’ll select your application, vehicle brand, and year, and then enter the serial number of the amplifier you are working with. Don’t make a mistake entering the serial number, or you will not be able to proceed with a module flash. Don’t ask how I found this out. Once the module is flashed, which should take less than five minutes, you can download the Kenwood DSP Control app to your smartphone or tablet, and then simply pair your device with the amp and go through the setup process. Enter your speaker configuration and amplifier signal selection, and you are ready to begin tuning!

CONCLUSION

Anyone who wants to upgrade a factory audio system and retain the original head unit will love the simplicity of this solution.
