ISSUE PREVIEW

hrowback Thursday? That’s weak, bro. You can take your hashtags and kick rocks because PASMAG is taking the last month of 2016 and the first month of 2017 and making it all a look back at some of the tuning world’s classic platforms. Think of it like a reflection, and maybe a little inspiration for the new year. Of course, the nostalgic tones are just a seasoning on your usual iteration of PAS. The same players are still here, in the form of our columnist team, delivering the topics you love to read about. In Jacob’s Drift, Mr. Leveton takes a look back at some of the drifting world’s top contenders and their first wins or podiums in the FD series, while Rob “Stay Crushing” Kochis (totally his new wrestling name) starts wrapping up his FR-S build with some pretty serious performance parts and upgrades. Garry Springgay got a little excited about this issue and wrote about restoring
a friend’s truck, and teases some similar work he may be up to soon, instead of his usual audio-focused column. No worries though, Garry has three Test Reports in this issue to let you know what’s good in the mobile electronics world these days. You also might notice that Adam Zillin’s usual column is missing, and that’s because we had him do something a little special this time around. See, Zillin got his hands on some exquisite examples of classic GT-Rs - one a Kenmeri, the other a Hakosuka – and both have been treated to the specialized tuning and restoration process of Inouesan at Star Road. You may as well wear a chin strap while reading to keep your jaw off the pages as you read. We’ve also got a BMW 2002 (now affectionately named the 2502 for reasons you’ll soon learn in the story) that has been a 10-year labor of love between father and son. This is old school
building and ingenuity at its finest, guys. So much respect for this car, build, and the people involved. Read up on this, and then go call your dad! I guess I’ll take a wild stab and guess that you picked up the mag because the meanest second-gen Camaro you’ve ever seen was glaring at you from the cover. That car has that effect on people. Is it because people are drawn to its sinister aggressiveness, or because they know it’s their savior from the upcoming zombie apocalypse? We can only guess that it’s a mixture. Read on to see exactly what makes this machine tick and boom. You’ll also find the usual bits and pieces of news that mattered most to us, as well as event coverage and the builds you should keep your attention on. Otherwise, hop in the DeLorean, hit 88 mph, and take a little trip with us as we throw it back to some of the best tuning platforms of JDM, Euro and USDM legend.

READY FOR THE BIG SHOW!
SEMA is a go! If you’re at the show, make sure to stop by the Tire Stickers booth where you can final y check out the car in person and see for yourself the madness the last couple of months have produced. Now, where to start on all that madness… How about the motor?
M
otoIQ has finish d the assembly of the engine! The Toyota/Subaru FA20 boxer-four is now sitting at a super healthy 10.5:1 compression with a fully blueprinted and balanced forged rotating assembly. Oh, but the build doesn’t stop there. We had Port Flow Designs work their magic on the heads, which are paired with some amazing Supertech valves, to ensure maximum flow and reliability. A widebody FR-S with an engine that’s been opened? Crazy talk, right? Vortech also stepped in and wanted to showcase their 2.87 pulley when paired with their V2 blower system. This blower is much larger and can push a serious amount of air, and they currently have not maxed one out yet! I’m not saying we’ll be trying to break it, but we’re going to be pushing some serious power out of this supercharger. That being said, until I get used to the car and how it handles with the extra power, I'll keep a more conservative tune to ensure that I don't push myself or the motor outside of our limits before both are ready.
20
PASMAG
Not wrecking myself or the FR-S is super important after doing all of this work! Something else going on under the hood, which everyone is very excited about debuting, is Raceseng’s Revo 7 super lightweight pulley kit. Raceseng has made an amazing pulley set for our motors that I cannot recommend enough to anyone running an FA20. The Revo 7 kit shaves four pounds of rotating mass and drag off f the OEM offering, and are not underdriven or different sizes, which means they don’t require a special belt and bolt right in where the factory pulley wheels are. This set of seven wheels is going to make a world of difference in the acceleration department. Raceseng also managed to make their CasCam camber plates adapt to my Feal coilovers and Platinum VIP’s Phantom air cup suspension kit. Inside the car, because I'm a total JDM freak, I just had to have some fresh new and blue Zeta III seats, which was a joint effort between Bride Japan and USA. I am a bigger dude, so I had to go for the Type-L, and now they snug me just right for the tightest hugs
through the corners. To drape over the Zetas and keep me from going through the windshield, I sourced some OG Takata green, three-inch, four-point drift harnesses. It’s a match made in heaven! Meanwhile, the Pandem kit is currently being installed over at Platinum VIP. I can’t wait to see how solid this thing turns out! For an idea of how much wider the V3 kit is, for the time being I will be running an 18x11 square wheel setup with a -6 off et, and 25-mm spacers in the rear. Yeah, it’s pretty wide. Once this car is dialed in and tuned aggressively, it should be an absolute monster on the street, and especially on the track. In the next issue, we’ll wrap it up and I'll go over the full list of parts that was used in order to make this build possible. See you then!

YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST STORY BY
A
utomotive racing often mirrors life events. While most recent accomplishments are often the topics of conversation, the earliest accomplishments are often the most memorable. Much like your first school dance, first date, or first kiss, drivers can often remember every element about their first event win. This year, six drivers earned a memorable first win or podium. We wanted to recap each of those accomplishments so that you can remember it as vividly as they will.
CHELSEA DENOFA LONG BEACH (WIN) Chelsea DeNofa has been driving in professional drifting series since 2007, but has struggled to find his first Formula Drift event win until Long Beach this year. Denofa has always been an aggressive tandem driver, but typically ran into mechanical issues or got too aggressive and collided with either his competitor or a wall. This year, in Long Beach, his car held together long enough to take out Geoff toneback, Chris Forsberg, Vaughn Gittin Jr., Ken Gushi, and Fredric Aasbo on the way to hoisting his first carbon fiber trophy. The win was also the first for GT Radial, who became the 11th different tire manufacturer to win an event in Formula Drift.

Photography by
FREDRIC AASBO ORLANDO (WIN) While Fredric Aasbo has won many events in the past, this year marked a new partnership with Nexen Tire who had previously never won a Formula Drift event despite several years of participation in the series. The Nexen N'Fera SUR4 is a substantial improvement over previous offe ings from Nexen, and the partnership between Nexen and Scion brought two event wins and four total podiums for the tire brand over the course of the season. Nexen became the 12th different tire manufacturer to win a Formula Drift event.
KRISTAPS BLUSS ORLANDO (PODIUM) Kristaps Bluss is one of a handful of competitors who operates his own team remotely during the course of the season, living in Latvia, but campaigning the entire Formula Drift schedule. Bluss was able to earn a podium in his HGK Motorsports E46 BMW in just his 10th event, a fantastic accomplishment especially considering the difficult nature of coordinating logistics from Europe. His BMW is consistently one of the fastest cars on the grid, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see him earn an event win in the coming 2017 season.
Andrew Jennings
ALEX HEILBRUNN NEW JERSEY (PODIUM) Alex Heilbrunn was the 2015 Pro 2 champion, and by earning a podium win in New Jersey, he became the first Pro 2 driver to graduate through the Pro 2 system and earn a podium finish in the Pro class. Although Heilbrunn lost to Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the final battle, he pushed Gittin Jr. to a pair of “one more time” battles before a small mistake handed the win to Gittin Jr. Heilbrunn had a dominating season in Pro 2 on his way to the 2015 championship, and has looked more and more comfortable in Formula Drift competition.
MATT FIELD TEXAS (WIN) As a sophomore, Matt Field put the entire series on alert back in 2012 when he chased down Daigo Saito at the House of Drift in Irwindale with an underpowered engine setup. Since then, Field has cranked up his program to become one of the top programs on the grid. His return to the same track where he earned his first podium back in 2013 was just what he needed to earn his first career win. Field took out Tanner Foust, Vaughn Gittin Jr., Forrest Wang, Kristaps Bluss, and Chris Forsberg on his way to the event win. Similar to DeNofa, Field’s aggressive tandem nature has often caused collisions with walls or competitors, but he has learned to dial back his aggression just enough to be competitive. We expect Field to be one of the top championship competitors in the next season or two.

hanks to a plethora of products developed by the aftermarket, it’s actually easier than you might think. Whether you need drivetrain parts, sheet metal, or sophisticated electronics, the aftermarket is ready to help with your project. Many companies specialize in certain makes and models, and others cover a really wide range. The amount of choices available for popular cars can be mind boggling. Whatever you are working on, from an Alfa-Romeo to a Zephyr, there will be parts and accessories available to bring your ride into the 21st century. As an example, I recently was involved in resto-modding my friend Shean’s 1964 Chevy pickup that has been in his family since new. When it was built, it may have been a well-equipped truck, but compared to a modern vehicle it may has well have been from the Stone Age. Power nothing, AM radio, no seat belts, rubber floor mat, lots of bare steel inside, and a very tired bench seat. The truck was in very well used condition with nearly a quarter million miles on it, but because it spent its entire life in Texas and Arizona, there was virtually no rust. Shean wanted to keep it in the family, and maybe pass it down to his son someday. That alone made it a worthwhile project to get involved in. The first things that were updated to modern standards were the brakes and suspen-

OLD DOGS, NEW TRICKS
We live in a technologically driven world, with our everyday lives made easier, safer, and better by the technology that surrounds us. For a lot of folks, improving the technology available in their car is a major reason to buy a new one every three or four years. But a lot of us, myself included, really appreciate the nostalgia and retro look and feel of a vintage vehicle. So, how can you combine the best of both worlds? sion. The original 10-bolt open axle was replaced with a rebuilt 12-bolt posi-traction unit from a 1970’s Chevy station wagon. Thanks to readily available aftermarket parts designed to basically bolt on, we were able to upgrade to power assisted, four wheel disc brakes. While we had things apart, we also replaced the tired coil springs with modern air bags and an onboard compressor. A new power steering system replaced the tired old Armstrong box. The old 230-cubic-inch straight-six had been installed sometime in the ‘80’s as a replacement for the original 235. With the “three on the tree” Saginaw transmission, the original radiator, heater, generator, and window regulators, the accumulation of old parts grew quickly. However, when you are doing this sort of upgrade to any old iron, don’t throw that original stuff way. Tag it and bag it, and write down what you have. You’d be surprised at how many folks are looking for original parts, as most of our old running gear was sold via internet auction. We ended up selling the old parts for enough cash to buy a new radiator, wheels, tires, and a wiring harness. In place of the old engine and transmission went a new fuel injected GM crate 350 and a modern 4L80E
four-speed automatic, with a shortened and rebalanced driveshaft. We relocated the fuel tank from behind the seat to under the bed. All the lights were replaced with LED technology. With the running gear sorted, we turned our attention to creature comfort and convenience features. The truck got a full sound deadening and heat shielding treatment. Air conditioning, power windows and locks, and even six-way power seats with new three-point seatbelts were installed. A fully modern audio/infotainment system with Bluetooth, navigation, and Wi-Fi connectivity replaced the old tired AM radio and single 6x9-inch speaker. A remote start kit, two rear-view cameras, Beltronics radar detector, and remote door poppers were also added. When you first look at a
project like this it can seem overly ambitious, but when you stop and break it down to the fundamental stages it’s not as intimidating. Yes, everything I have described has been a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. We learned things, and we got to express some creativity along the way. The old Chevy is slowly being done in stages over the course of several years, as time and funds permit. As of this writing, all that’s left to do is basically paint and a new bed floor. When it’s finally done, Shean has one of the most up to date, not to mention safe, comfortable and convenience-oriented 1964 Chevys on the planet. And now that my involvement in Shean’s project is over, here is a photo of my next project. If you thought his was ambitious, this will either tickle you or terrify you.

DRIVEN TO CURE
M
How an orange GT-R is paving the way towards a rare cancer treatment BY MICKY SLINGER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRUSTLESS MEDIA Over a year ago, at age 19, Andrew Lee was diagnosed with HLRCC, a rare form of kidney cancer. Shortly after the diagnosis, Andrew and his family found out that because the cancer was so rare, it was incurable, with treatment options looking to last anywhere from as much as three to four years, to as little as one year. After soaking in the realization, Andrew’s father sat him down and asked what his life goals were. Being a car enthusiast, one of Andrew’s main goals in life was to work hard enough to eventually buy an R35 GT-R. To his absolute surprise, his father came into his room the next day and said, “Hey, let’s go buy that car.” Once he had acquired his dream car, Andrew set out to make that summer a memorable one and make the most of his GT-R ownership experience by seeking out cars and coffees, meets of any kind, supercar rallies, and likeminded car owners he could befriend. He cites these events and newfound friendships as some of his best memories. When that summer had passed, Andrew had to go back to school in New Hampshire. Between the workload, flying back
and forth for treatment, and the absence of his beloved GT-R, he was feeling the strain and really wasn’t happy with where he was. So, instead of pouring his efforts into school, he came up with the idea for Driven To Cure. He would build his R35 up to be what he’d only dreamed of and then tour his story around to high profi e shows and events, raising both money and awareness for rare forms of kidney cancer in children and young adults. And so, Driven To Cure was born. The fi st stop on Andrew’s GT-R’s dream build list was APAC, in Linthicum, Maryland, for all the bodywork needed to install his Liberty Walk widebody kit. The kit is traditionally riveted in, but instead of sealing the seams, the team actually molded the edges of the flares to be seamless and coated the car in a one-off sh de of orange with gold pearl. APAC also dialed in the fitment vi Airlift V3 air suspension, as well as sourced the RSV Forged RSF1 wheels to bring it all together. The now orange R35 would then go to Baker Performance, the GT-R performance shop most local to Andrew in Maryland. Dave,
the owner at Baker Performance, recommended full bolt-ons (intercooler, full exhaust, intakes, and injectors) plus a custom tune for the “F CANCR” GT-R, leaving Andrew’s R35 sitting right around 700 horsepower. Inside, the GT-R houses Bride seats, Takata harnesses, and even a roll cage. Making their debut at the OC Car Show in Ocean City, Maryland, Andrew and his GT-R generated some serious attention and donations, a trend which has lost no steam whatsoever in all of the show appearances since. “There are people in my position that can’t fulfill their d eams in the time period they’re given.” Andrew explains. “I really wanted
to take my dream and help people in my position down the road to find di erent treatments or cures. “The car world is awesome. The one thing it’s taught me is that car people stick together, and that’s why I really wanted to start this charity and do it through this industry. I love community, I love the people, and I thought that the car world would take the story and back it. Let’s see how far we can take this thing!” You can follow Andrew’s awareness journey via the Driven To Cure Facebook and Instagram channels, and donate to support their cause at DriveToCure.com. Godspeed, Andrew, and may all your dreams come true.

ON-THE-GO H20 BY FORD kill all water bottles! BY ADAM GORDON Have you ever been driving along during a road trip thirsty and without water? The nearest stop along the highway isn’t for miles, and your mouth is as dry as the desert sands passing by your windows. If the vision of Ford Powertrain Controls Engineer Doug Martin comes to fruition, that scenario could be a thing of the past for some. Taking inspiration from a billboard in Peru that condensed water out of thin air for local residents, Martin decided that cars could do something similar. On-the-Go H20 is a system that recovers water from the condenser of an air conditioning system, pumps it through a 0.1-micron filter, and sends it to the cabin via a tap in the center console. The system is capable of producing an impressive two liters of water per hour when active, which is staggering when you consider that the water essentially comes out of thin air. The idea, which is still in its prototype phase, is intended to benefit developing countries where there is a shortage of clean, drinkable water. The system is also designed to be able to filter unclean water, making it a multi-purpose system for producing drinkable water. While originally intended for developing countries, we can certainly see creature comforts like this becoming a feature in regular passenger vehicles on North American shores, especially as self-driving autonomous cars gain popularity. We’re just surprised they didn’t call it the Ford Synk.

FORZA HORIZON 3 #ACROSSTHEHORIZON
G
BY ADAM GORDON The Horizon series of Turn 10 Studios’ Forza games have been a big hit since its inception, and with the third installment of the series hitting shelves, the team at Xbox Canada came up with a cool promotion that puts fans in control of a road trip. Starting on September 11, the team set o˜ on a road trip across Canada, starting in Vancouver and eventually ending up in Montreal at “New City Gas” for a Forza Horizon-inspired meet-up. With each stop along the way, the brand took to social media, giving fans the opportunity to vote for one of two optional events inspired by the Horizon game series for each location. For example, in Vancouver the fans

decided between climbing the area’s highest peak in a Jeep Wrangler at sunrise, or stuntdriving a McLaren 650S Spider on an air strip in Pemberton. The antics continued in Saskatoon with a Mercedes C-class coupe, and in the Northern Ontario wilderness with a Polaris Side X Side and a Ford F-150. When they got to Shannonville Motorsports Park just outside of Toronto, they had fans vote on the choice between lapping a McLaren 570S or sliding heavily modified drift cars around the track, which happens to be the central hub for drifting in Ontario. Along the way, fans were invited to play the game at select EB Games locations before its actual release on the 27th. By the time this magazine hits stores, we’ll be engrossed in the game ourselves.

SPREADING
THE PB&J BY MICKY SLINGER
If you’ll remember to our last issue, we featured a wide, performance-oriented Lotus street car from the mind of Johnny Ngo. One of the most impressive parts of that build, however, was the fact that the car was almost completely built by Ngo in his garage – yes, even the custom widebody. Now, let’s say you’re an owner, or an aspiring owner, of a Lotus
Elise and you’re looking at Johnny’s car saying, “Man, I really wish I could get a widebody like that for mine!” Turns out that he must have heard your cries because Ngo is now o˜ ering the custom kit in a mass produced version through his new business, Swifter Dynamics. “After showing the car for the better part of a year, the single

most consistent feedback I hear at every event was that I should be starting my own business,” laughs Ngo. “Eleven months after the car's SEMA debut in 2015, Swifter Dynamics has been officially launched!” Initially, the kit was molded out of foam and constructed out of fiberglass from the comfort of Ngo’s garage, but now you can get

SUNG KANG’S FORD MAVERICK

BY MICKY SLINGER
Just about every fan of the Fast & Furious series, Datsun Z-cars, or just cars in general has seen the famous FuguZ, Sung Kang’s incredible RB-powered 240Z with the Rocket Bunny kit that took the internet by storm. In the wake of his show-stopping build, the popularity tax hit the 240Z platform hard (much to the dismay of aspiring 240Z owners like myself), raising prices for preserved examples of the Japanese classic across the board. If you’re in the niche market for a Ford Maverick, you had better

act fast, because Kang is at it again with something he’s titled "Project Udog," where Udog is short for Underdog. Working in a close partnership with Kei Miura of Rocket Bunny has allowed Kang to explore several options for the next project, and after finally settling on a Ford Maverick, renders of an impending Rocket Bunny kit for the classic Ford began to surface, courtesy of Muira-san himself. When asked about the
peculiar choice in car, Kang states that the Maverick has always been underappreciated and overlooked, making it the perfect fi fit for Project Underdog. This time around, Kang has taken it upon himself to enlist the help of three aspiring automotive tech students from Alhambra, California. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime apprenticeship! Additionally, Steve Strope of Pure Vision, a custom shop based out of the greater Los Angeles area, will serve as a mentor and guide to the team throughout
the build process. Other than the knowledge that Ford has supplied a 2.3L EcoBoost inline-4 engine, details on the build remain scarce and mostly under wraps. This project, much like the previous one, is set to make its grand debut at SEMA 2016 from November 1 to 4, and will be auctioned o˜ to raise money for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Foundation, an institution that o˜ ers financial support to young students pursuing lifelong careers in the automotive industry. Until the date of debut, the build process can be followed through an online video series on the Garage Monkey YouTube channel.

ouis Sierra’s love for the 350Z runs deep. “When the 350Z was released It instantly became one of my dream cars. To me the 350Z is a special car. It was the return of the Z after it had been absent for several years," he explains. "I love the lines and total look of the car. I told myself I would own one. In 2008 I was able to a˜ ord a brand new 350z and began my build.” He goes on to explain his choice of the base model. “The reason I chose the base was because I had plans to make the car my own. It doesn’t even have cruise control! Why no cruise control? Because racecar! With

the base model I hade a blank canvas - the perfect start to create my masterpiece.” And a masterpiece he did create. ChargeSpeed’s Bottomline lip is one of his favourite style-tweaks to the Z, and a massive Voltex wing comes courtesy of his wife, who ordered it for him on their 8-year anniversary. Best wife ever or what? That wing produces so much downforce that the rear suspension had to be adjusted, and the rear fenders pulled wider. After a little bit of tweaking and readjusting, the fitment and function come together in perfect harmony. Hanging from the driver’s side visor on the interior is perhaps one of the most sentimental modifications we’ve ever come across. A “guardian angel bell”, given to Sierra by one of his best friend’s mother after he passed away in a car crash, dangles and rings as he drives, keeping his long lost friend close by. Between his father’s influence on his life as a car enthusiast, to his friend eternally riding shotgun, it’s evident that this is a special build, inside and out.

teve Nodarse spent a long time as a truck and low-rider enthusiast before arriving where he is today. After a hiatus from modifying vehicles, Nodarse is back in the game with a cool custom Corrado. “Every show or meet I went to I always saw the Jettas, GTIs, and Golfs,” he tells us. “I rarely ever saw Corrados, but when I did see one, it always caught my eye and my interest. I just liked the look of it and always thought if I ever build something, that would be the car.”
34

Fast-forward to today, and his aspirations have come true. After being given the nickname “Passenger” by most of his friends egging him on to get back into a car of his own, it wasn’t long before he pulled the trigger on a 1992 Corrado SLC. It was only a matter of time before he cooked up a plan for this classic VW. “Originally the plan was to shave the bay, R32 swap, fresh paint, air and wheels,” he explains. “As you can see, that got thrown out the window. I wanted to do it di˜ erently than everyone else. I wanted mine to be original. So that's when I decided I wanted to take it to another level and made it a full blown show car.” Nodarse’s favorite aspect of the build, and possibly the favorite aspect of the build for most onlookers, is the custom wide body work that still maintains the car’s original body lines. Looking for a way to preserve the body lines, but also do something unique, Nodarse decided to keep things subtle, yet noticeable. All in all, a very tasteful build.

efore starting the modification process on his Scion FR-S, Nick Green had little knowledge of the automotive scene in and around his local area. At the time, all he knew is that he wanted a reliable and a° ordable sports car with great handling. The widespread aftermarket support for the FR-S platform is a big part of the reason he chose the car as his starting point. “Throughout the few years the FR-S has been out, the aftermarket scene has grown substantially, which also keeps the car fun and exciting as I’m always able to add something, or do something di° erently,” he writes. “This is my first car I’ve been able to build and I can honestly say it's been a fulfilling

challenge,” Green continues. “Getting accepted into shows, winning awards, [and] meeting fellow car enthusiasts has been an absolute joy.” His enthusiastic entry into the car scene likely strikes a chord with many of our readers, as most of us have fond memories of our first tuner projects. Green says that his original plan was to keep the car stock (we’ve all heard that one before), but after joining forums and seeing the passion that went into other builds, he knew he wanted to compete in shows and build the car to suit himself more. After research and discussions with other FR-S owners, he carefully chose parts based on quality recommendations from people who had used them before with positive results. The advice of others, combined with his own personal tastes, has resulted in an exhaust system comprised of Kakimoto, Borla, DC Sports and Invidia to sing the boxer-four’s signature song. The finishing touch on the project to date is his GT86 conversion, which includes a complete custom GT86 interior and badge swap, embracing the platform’s original concept.

However, being a car enthusiast to the core and having previous build experience with a Del Sol show car and an RSX Type S fixer-upper, it was only a matter of time before the modifications started. Not long after being claimed the “family” car, it quickly became a full-blown show car that just happened to transport his family. Regaspi tells us that the build process actually went smoothly with no hiccups or speed bumps along the way. “I’ve learned from past

I did all the paint and all the VIP tables in it.” Also in the interior is a loud audio system courtesy of a Planet Audio sponsorship thanks to Regaspi’s friend, Randy, of Jackson Mobile Sounds. In addition to the entertainment-infused interior, he also takes pride in the custom Rootbeer metallic paint, even going so far as to claim it as his favorite aspect of the car, naming it as the biggest eye-catcher. As an older enthusiast, Regaspi extends his thanks to the younger guys in his local scene, as well as his team. “Most of them are younger than me and when I see them building their cars it gives this old man inspiration to follow. Shout out to team CLYMAX.” It’s hospitality and inspiration like this that makes it hard to leave the car scene, and Regaspi is a perfect example of that. Keep on building!

Driven Edmonton MacEwan University – Edmonton, AB drivenshow

Drivencarshow
Photography by Ken Au
The finest modified cars, trucks and bikes of Canada’s mid-west gathered at the MacEwan University underground parking structure for the much anticipated return of Driven Edmonton after a 7-year hiatus. For six hours of the Saturday, the massive underground parkade became a full-blown show for both local and out-of-province rides itching
for that Tokyo Drift-style parking lot meet-up and showcase. In addition to the usual show entertainment, Driven Edmonton featured some eye candy in the form of an exotic showcase, which included around 50 exotics and supercars for attendees to admire. Dannie Riel, one of the world’s biggest import models was also on scene as “Miss Driven”, presented
by Advant Garde Motorsports and Garage Works. This show isn’t just some thrown-together parking lot meet. 50 aftermarket exhibitors from all over came out to showcase their latest products and services in order to help enthusiasts in attendance take their builds to the next level. We wish our University parties were all this cool.
01 The owner of this deep satin blue Subaru went for a clean and aggressive minimalist look, and it works! 02 It only takes one look under the hood of this FD RX-7 to know that the rotary engine found within is all business. 03 This AE86 with a 1UZ V8 engine under the hood with ITBs is as clean as they come. A lot of custom work went into this build, and we bet it’s probably a blast to drive. 04 There was no shortage of classic Japanese icons at this show, but this blue Datsun on BBS wheel with an RB engine really stands out from the crowd. 05 The classic Japanese icon theme continues with this Hakosuka. A rare sight by any means, even at a show of this caliber, this iconic Skyline of yesteryear was a crowd favorite. 06 Skylines of more modern generations were plentiful as well. With a subtle contrast between the bronze wheels and grey paint, this R34 Skyline was a show-stopper. GET THE FULL PICTURE

Import vs Domestic
Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum - Philadelphia , PA elite_tuner

Photography by Werks Automotion
If you’re looking for a show that’s all about build quality, look no further than Elite Tuner shows. Touching down in Philadelphia, the Sunday “Import vs Domestic” show presented by R/T Tuning was a battle royale between imports and domestic cars, all built to show-stopping levels of modification. Like many Elite Tuner shows, this show attracted an audience from all
over, with some competitors even coming from out of the country to showcase their rides. With cash prizes for Best of Show and Best Team Participation, there was no shortage of high-profile competitors or big teams. The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum filled inside and out with a wide array of the best cars the import and domestic crowds had to offer in a face-off
style showdown. Tuner Battlegrounds was also underway, where Drew Evans won the #TBGLIVE award with his custom Liberty Walk-kitted G37 sedan. If you’re looking for a reason to head to Philly, this city has even more greatness than just cheesesteak sandwiches and famous skate spots! Be sure to keep an eye out for the much anticipated return of Import vs Domestic.
This Rocket Bunny-outfitted Subaru BRZ hit all the right areas with its aggressive stance and perfect fitment. 02 An uncommon sight, even at a show of such high caliber, the Wald kit on this Mercedes adds an aggressive look to an otherwise sleek and subtle platform. 03 Drew Evans’ G37 sedan with a custom-fitted Liberty Walk kit took home the #TBGLIVE award. This Infiniti is so much more than just a retrofitted body kit! 04 Creative custom trunk installs were plentiful at the show, including this artistic install with an integrated spare wheel and tire on display. 05 Gary Bentz represents an underappreciated niche in the scene with his heavily modified 2006 Eclipse GT. With such a limited aftermarket selection, the amount of modification done to the engine and exterior is impressive to say the least. 06 When this twin-turbocharged Accord first made its debut, it took the internet by storm. With a gold engine bay and two massive turbo inlets, it’s no surprise that this ride garners a lot of attention. 07 Making sure not to leave out the old-school JDM crowd, this 70’s Celica was one clean piece of automotive history.

On September 11, a large gathering of car enthusiasts in Chicago shared a moment of silence paying tribute to Paul Walker at the 4th Annual Paul Walker Memorial Show, just one day before the late actor’s 43rd birthday. Savage Performance hosted the event in the parking
lot of Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears. The Paul Walker Memorial was memorable thanks to a variety of tributes throughout the day. There were musical performances all day and a special guest appearance by Bow Wow later that evening. This incredible event brought together
thousands of enthusiasts and a wide variety of vehicles, from track builds to exotics, low riders and even lifted trucks. Each year the event grows in size, attracting more and more fans of the man who started the journey for many enthusiasts. A perfect way to remember the buster.
The PASMAG booth featured some familiar looking cars. A proper tribute to Paul. 02 Glenn’s twin-turbocharged R8 V10 is certainly an eye-catching piece of machinery. 03 Jake from Eurocharged came out to the event in his twin-turbocharged Gallardo, styled in an orange camouflage. 04 Appropriately, the meet was a hot-spot for Nissan Skylines, one of Paul Walker’s favorites. 05 This street-tuner styled G35 was sporting some gold jewelry, looking clean and low on static suspension. 06 This Ford Fiesta with a custom widebody featured a Gulf livery and some rally-inspired front lighting.

JVC KW-V820BT Multimedia Receiver Review A perfect in-car entertainment mate for your iPhone that delivers quality audio in any format.
I
f you are a dedicated iPhone user, the JVC KW-V820BT should be right up your alley. The new receiver from JVC includes Apple CarPlay so you can control most of your iPhone’s functions directly from the unit’s 6.8-inch TFT screen.
FEATURES and FUNCTIONS
"THE UNIT HAS LOW NOISE, PLENTY OF OUTPUT, AND EXCELLENT STEREO SEPARATION"
The KW-V820BT is a doubleDIN chassis DVD receiver with all of the expected bells and whistles. The design of the receiver is very smooth and, with the exception of a power button, there are no hard buttons or bright chrome trim that scream “steal me.” When powered off, the unit nondescriptly blends into the dash, which is a cosmetic feature that JVC calls "El Kameleon." With the power on, the left side of the touchscreen has four vertically stacked touch control keys for frequently used functions like volume, home screen and previous screen. The remaining 6.2 inches of screen displays
information, video content, maps, or whatever else you may need to see. The touchscreen has excellent clarity, and can be set to a dizzying array of background colors. JVC’s new large-format GUI makes it very easy to find and select your choice of sources or menu items. There are also gesture enabled controls to make the unit even easier to use while keeping your eyes on the road. Of course, full Bluetooth (version 3.0) hands-free integration, and iPod/iPhone control is also built right in. When paired to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the KW-V820BT can access Siri through its touchscreen controls and external microphone. Simply press the "phone command" button on the screen to engage Siri and speak. Siri's voice will be heard through your vehicle's speakers, while all of Siri’s functions, including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text messaging, audible

navigation and more, can be done through the unit and the included microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and get turn-by-turn instructions through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone. The JVC KW-V820BT's rearpanel USB port consists of a proprietary connector and a 39-inch proprietary USB cable terminated by two female USB connectors. These USB ports can be used for connection and control of portable USB mass-storage devices; such as thumb drives or portable digital music players. The USB ports enable playback of a variety of compressed and high-resolution audio files, plu video and photo files loaded on o a USB device. USB portable audio devices can be charged at 1.5 amps via USB whenever the unit is turned on. The JVC is Sirius/ XM ready as well for fans of the extraterrestrial radio.

TEST REPORT JVC KW-V820BT As I mentioned, the KW-V820BT is equipped with a four-channel power amplifie , and front, rear and sub pre-outs. The amplifier is ra ed at 22 watts per channel, and the output voltage of the pre-outs is advertised at four volts. For those who like to do a little fine tuning, the built in 13-band EQ with adjustable fil er Q is sure to provide all the adjustment you need. Other signal shaping comes in the form of adjustable high- and low-pass fil ers, with 13 available frequencies and four selectable fil er slopes.
Fans of high resolution audio will be delighted by the KW-V820BT’s compatibility with 96-kHz/24-bit audio files, and will ma e full use of the built-in MOSFET amplifier or the thre pairs of four-volt pre-outs. While we’re on the subject of improved sound quality, JVC has a technology they call “K2.” It is a method of expanding the bitrate and frequency range of any source, including CD. For example, K2 will expand typical CDs from 44.1 kHz/16 bit to 48 kHz/24 bit, thereby extending the high frequency range.

ing to my iPod, and finally o some high resolution tracks on a thumb drive, the JVC player sounds very good. The unit has low noise, plenty of output, and excellent stereo separation. On one of my favorite test tracks, the Cowboy Junkies Sweet Jane (fun fact: it was recorded in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto), all the space and reverb in the room was easily apparent. The various crossover adjustments and 13-band EQ will come in very handy for any desired additional tuning.

ON THE BENCH Back on the bench, with the unit connected to my Audio Precision analyzer, I ran a battery of tests and the results were very good. The internal amplifier ma es the same power as all the other high quality headunits (that use the same MOSFET IC) and signal-to-noise confirmed a ery low noise floo . Frequency response, crosstalk and THD also measured very well. Pre-out voltages did not quite meet the

et’s face it, the auto manufacturers are making it more diÿ cult to make an argument for swapping out the OEM radio. In addition to the integration of other features and no longer being relegated to a common-sized dash opening, the audio performance of the OEM source units are getting better as well. That doesn’t mean you can’t still upgrade the overall performance of the system! You can still replace the crappy OEM speakers and add multiple channels of high powered amplification. All you need is the proper bit of kit to interface the OEM source to those amps, and the folks at Audiomobile have been working hard to bring you several di° erent products designed to do just that. In this issue we’ll take a look at the very well thought out Audiomobile “Line Drive” LDV6 multi-channel processor.
Features The compact LDV6 is designed with a bunch of useful features that aren’t usually found on a single processor. Designed to allow signal summing of typical three-way OEM front speaker systems, it has four channels of highlevel inputs that will accept high powered amp signals up to 500 watts and convert those channels

18-dB/Oct subsonic filter, with a 20 Hz setting for sealed applications and a 32 Hz setting for vented enclosures. The subsonic filter is very handy for situations where you need to limit the very low frequency power applied to a subwoofer, such as when using a vented enclosure or an infinite ba° e design. Audiomobile’s “ELF-Q” bass restoration provides 20 dB of driver’s seat control of the
subwoofer level. The ELF-Q remote-mounted control also can provide 7 dB of boost at 48 Hz, allowing the bottom end to be tuned to better suit the vehicle or compensate for compressed audio files. It’s also useful when dealing with an OEM head unit that reduces bass output as the volume increases. Plus, the narrow Q used for this filter prevents boost in the regions where you don’t want it, and can be turned on or o˛

while driving, something that can’t be done on an amplifier’s bass boost amplifi control. The subwoofer outputs are summed to mono internally, so there is no need for Y-cables or external summing switches. Signal sensing turn-on provides easy and silent system turn-on, and a dedicated 12-volt output is amplifier’s turn-on leads available to power the amplifi for installations that don’t have a typical amp turn-on lead. With all of these features in one product, it’s pretty obvious that the folks at Audiomobile have done their homework, so it should come as no surprise that the LDV6 is completely compatible with “smart” radios that can sense if a load is connected or not. With an LDV6 you’ll never have to go to the dealer to get radio channels turned back on because they were shut o° when an aftermarket device was connected.
On The Bench On the test bench, the Audiomobile piece shows why the brand is fast becoming the go-to when it comes to OEM interfacing.

Conclusion The audio signal produced by the LDV6 is truly high performance and high fidelity. Maximum unclipped output voltage measured over 10.5 volts RMS, thereby easily earning the “Line Drive” moniker. Couple that level of output capability with the very low source impedance of 36 ohms, and the result is a product that should drive nails. Frequency response was ruler flat from below 10 Hz to well above 50 kHz, and when switched

The Audiomobile LDV6 incorporates a host of features not normally all found on a single processor. With the intelligent design, features, and performance the unit provides, it should prove to be a very popular choice for any system using an OEM source unit that aspires to true high fidelity and exemplary audio performance. If you have a car that needs an audio upgrade and you want to retain the factory radio, the Audiomobile LDV6 should be at the top of your shopping list.

"IN SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISONS WITH THE 9500IX, THE ESCORT IX PROVED TO OUTPERFORM THE OLDER UNIT EVERY TIME."
Escort iX Radar Detector Regular readers of PASMAG will recall my proclivity to never drive anywhere without a good radar detector. Over the years, I have developed an affin y for Escort-branded detectors, and for good reason. Until recently, my go-to detector has been the brilliant Passport 9500ix, however, after testing the new Escort iX for the last month or so in daily driving, as well as cross country trips, the 9500ix has final y met its replacement.
T
he new iX is brimming with features and functionality. Its GPS location based intelligence automatically locks out false alarms and provides warnings of alert locations via Escort’s Defender Database, which is touted as the most accurate photo enforcement database in North America. The unit is equipped with Bluetooth, enabling your smartphone (iOS or Android) to communicate with the Escort Live app for real-time ticket protection, as well as other alerts and local speed limit data. Escort's patented AutoLearn Technology enables the iX to block out known false alert locations, identi-

fied y the exact frequency and location. To keep all of the information up to date, the Escort Tools program (available for both Windows and Apple computers) makes updates simple and easy. A new OLED-type color display provides graphical information about alerts and warnings. It’s easy to read and the graphics make it really quick to comprehend. This allows you to understand the warning with only a quick glance, while keeping your attention on the road. My only complaint is that the display can be difficult o read in direct bright sunlight. The new Escort iX is impressive right out of the box. The unit has a solid, high quality feel
about it, and the buttons have a precise, tactile feel. Maybe the single most impressive part of the new design is the fantastic EZ Mag Mount magnetic attachment method for the suction cup windshield mount. The magnetic mount is located on the top forward section of the iX, and when connected is very solid. Even a brief off-road desert excursion in my Tacoma failed to dislodge the detector from its mount. When and if you need to remove it though, it comes off quickly and ery easily. This may be the best mount I have ever seen for a windshield-mounted detector! And the improvements don’t stop there. Escort has seen fit o include the SmartCord
USB in the box, allowing you to power up your smartphone without the need for an additional USB port. The SmartCord USB can control mute functions for an alert, or be used to report a verified alert when connec ed via Escort Live. The voice quality has also been improved over the 9500ix, as the alerts have better clarity and a less synthesized sounding voice. Overall alert volume is excellent as well, and almost infini ely adjustable. If you speak Spanish, the Escort iX can do that too! In side by side comparisons with the 9500ix, the Escort iX proved to outperform the older unit every time. It alerted sooner, and the distance to the alert was easier to ascertain because the alert sounds were smoother and more gradual. GPS performance has been improved significantl , with quicker position acquisition and it seems to work better under canopies or heavy tree cover. One of my biggest complaints with the 9500ix was its propensity to false alert because of modern cars collision avoidance systems. Filtering out these K-band signals is done via something Escort calls “IVT fil ering,” and while I don’t pretend to understand how it works, I can report that is very effective. The Escort iX did not get fooled by a nearby Mercedes or Lexus. You may have figured out y now that I really like the new Escort iX. So much so in fact, that it is now my go-to detector, and the standard that I will now judge all others by.

The second generation of Chevrolet’s Camaro is an iconic car to many, including Chevrolet, but you would be hard pressed to find someone who would sing praise of this car more than Miro Pavletic. Having longed to build a second-gen Camaro for most of his life as a car enthusiast, he didn’t just jump into the build process on a blind leap of faith. The murderous machine you see before you, aptly dubbed "World War Z," is the result of detailed planning and a vision that went overboard, brought to fruition by people who know damn well what they’re doing.
M
iro is not alone in his admiration for the second generation of Chevrolet’s pony-car. When the newly designed Camaro hit showroom floo s in 1970, poised as the ultimate “driver’s car” of the time, it was an instant favorite. It was longer, lower and wider than its fi st generation predecessor. Heavy modific tion of the platform was soon widespread,
spanning all sorts of styles and influences “[I] wanted to build the baddest Camaro on the streets,” Miro says. But, in a category where builds are frequent and purists are scarce (albeit passionate), how does one stand out definiti ely as the baddest? Miro started modding the Camaro with his close friend Joe Maria, a Corvette restoration expert from Stingray Auto Tech. Bolt-on mods included front coilovers and a 150-shot
nitrous kit. That was just the beginning. The fi st step in building this monster to the level it is now, and the fi st step in just about any project of this magnitude, is to get the right people on the job. For this specific job, the eam at Cyrious Garageworks was enlisted. The car was already lightly modified when it made i s way to the shop. Thankfully, “lightly modified wasn’t satisfactory enough for Miro, and

the overhaul began. Step one was to give the Camaro a new heart – a 6.2L supercharged LSA from a 2013 Cadillac CTS-V, which already makes more than 550 horsepower from the factory. Not a bad place to start. The original plan was to keep the LSA mated to its factory 6L90 automatic transmission and install a special paddle-shift system. While the engine may have fi nicely without much hassle, a lot of careful tweaking and bending was required to make space for the massive 6L90 transmission. Unfortunately, after all that work, the team discovered that the paddle-shift transmission just wouldn’t shift the way they
76

wanted, and it wouldn’t hold a gear at redline without automatically changing gears. Since that's just not compatible with hardcore burnouts, it simply wouldn’t fly o this project. After much deliberation on a solution to their transmission problem, the crew decided it was best to go the way of a true muscle car – with a manual transmission to bang gears. They soon found themselves in possession of a six-speed Tremec T56 Tranzilla transmission, the same bulletproof transmission they use on twin-turbo Dodge Vipers, featuring carbon synchros and good for over 1,200 lb-ft of torque. A Ringbrothers anodized six-speed shifter topped off

Now we’re in burnout country. It wasn’t long before the custom set of deep dish, 19-inch RSF1s arrived from RSV Forged in a stunning polished bronze finish and it was time to set up the Camaro’s street stance. Thanks to a sophisticated auto-levelling Stage 2 air ride system from RideTech, and some cut out fenders, World
War Z is able to squat low over the wheels. Of course, with wheels that measure 12.5-inches wide in the front, 13.5-inches in the rear, and wrapped in 295 and 325 Nitto Invos, respectively, the stock body just wasn’t wide enough to contain the massive wheels and tires. Enter Cyrious Garageworks’ custom craftsmanship skills once again to fabricate some impressive flare

Of course not. For a build as menacing as this, no corners were cut (unless you count the fenders, but I’m speaking figurati ely here). With an eclectic styling taking inspiration from both drifting culture and ProTouring racecars, coupled with some seriously impressive power, there’s no mistaking that this Camaro is ready for war. Miro also has a 1968 Charger in the works at Cyrious Garageworks, which he says will surpass the Camaro in terms of power. After that, he tells us he’s already got plans for 1970 Boss 302. We like where this is going.

RESPECTING THE CRAFT
While there is a lot of part sharing between BMW platforms, there’s also a lot of part ftting ingenuity from sources you wouldn’t even think of, similar to the Aveo roof spoiler.
Y
es, the 2002 you see here is beautiful and has some great attention to detail, but the story behind it, as well as the parts and ingenuity used to build this Bimmer are the absolute standout contributions to how this whole thing came to be. It should defini ely be mentioned that the timeline it took to create this BMW is 10 years. A full decade to get it dialed in to make it to the finish line. So, let s start there, shall we? Ten years ago, Tony Mendes planted the seed by showing his son a picture of his old 2002. “My dad showed me a picture of one he had when he lived in Africa,” Ricardo recalls. “I fell in love with the lines and bodystyle. He found one for sale in Toronto, so we went to see the car. After looking it over, he asked if I liked it, and I obviously said yes. The rest is history!” With his father’s years upon years of mechanical experience, and co-ownership in M-Tricks Autosports, a Euro-specialized shop in Toronto, Ontario, it didn’t matter if the car was to be a bit of a fi er-upper. In fact, when they showed up to take a look at the 2002, the owner informed them that the motor wasn’t running quite right. After inspecting the engine bay, Ricardo’s father
84
PASMAG
told him he could fix it no problem, and as soo as they rounded the corner of the road out, he popped open the hood, switched around the spark plug wires that were in the wrong spots, and the 2002 hummed nice and healthy. “I still remember going with him to work on it like it was yesterday,” says Ricardo, fondly. “I still remember the sound it made when he fi st took me for a drive in it. I instantly fell in love with it and became hooked on cars.” Originally, the 2002 was supposed to stay as a throwback daily driver that the duo would then setup for some light track duty on free weekends, that is until the motor came knocking. With an unfortunate case of piston slap, the search went from which tracks the two would venture out to, to what they were going to put under the hood of the 02. At the shop, there just so happened to be a 325i sitting, so their new mission was to fit the M20B25 2.5-li er I-6 into the bay, but not without building it a bit fi st. The engine from the 1990 3 Series received the bottom end from a 1988 325e before being transplanted. The engine operation actually inspired the name change on the 2002 to the 2502, sticking in theme with how BMW uses the series name in combination with the engine's
displacement to name their models. Though, the custom emblem on the back now needs to be updated to 2702, as the Mendes boys have since stroked the 2.5 out to a 2.7-liter. Forced induction was the most recent addition to the engine, which Ricardo cites as his favorite aspect of the whole endeavor. The nights shoehorning the engine into the bay, followed by even more nights cutting and fitting countles pieces of piping to make up the turbo system were challenging memories, but some of his fondest. A T3/T4 Garrett 60 trim turbocharger plays nicely with the custom 2.5-inch piping, a Yonaka Type 11 intercooler, dual Tial wastegates, a Turbosmart dual-port blow-off alve, upgraded Siemens Deka EV1 60-pound fuel injectors, and a DIY Auto Tune MegaSquirt PNP ECU with a custom tune from Dyna Motorsports. Under the hood wasn’t the only place to receive more of an overhaul than originally planned. At fi st Tony and Ricardo wanted a tasteful two-tone paint job and body touch up, but the brakes were put on that before all the original paint was stripped away. Cool 1 Autobody noticed just how much filler and other fu surprises were under the 2002’s skin. They suggested going all the way back to bare metal and

starting again, and the Mendes squared shook their heads in agreement, so the Bimmer went under the knife - or in this case, the razor blade. Taking on the unique and custom two-tone pearl white and purple paintjob, the BMW also received some fairly hefty body modifications Cutting into the factory metal fenders, the gap was replaced with fiberglass ender flares mo elled after the Group 2 touring car racing series 2002s of the ‘70s. The front fenders are met with with a Group-2-styled valance to match. On the rear of the car, the trunk is finished o with a spoiler from a 1988 528i, while the roof is topped off with a spoiler from a Chevy veo of all things. While there is a lot of part sharing between BMW platforms, there’s also a lot of part fittin ingenuity from sources you wouldn’t even think of, similar to the Aveo roof spoiler. Parts like the Ford Ranger front springs, Volvo 240 brake conversion and third brake light, and Saab 95 center console. Even the power steering conversion was born out of part swapping between manufacturers – in this case, the power steering system came by way of a Chevy Cavalier, while the reservoir was donated by a Saab. This is all made possible by Tony Mendes’ knowhow and drive to make things work, even if that’s not where they originally belonged. 86

This is the same man who did a custom metal widebody, had a working VHS player and TV, plus swapped in a 2.7-liter air-cooled Porsche 911 engine into his ’81 VW Vanagon back in the day. Now, just because the car took a different direction from restored daily driver, doesn’t mean that the Mendeses forgot about track days, and that is reflec ed on the interior of the BMW. Inside, you’ll find the rear sea s from a 1985 635i, 1990 325i dash, and front seats from the same 325i, with the driver’s side on a quick release that’s ready to accept a Sparco Sprint racing seat for weekend warrior work. The daily driver feel of the car has been completely rounded out with the addition of an upgraded stereo system. An Alpine CDA-9835 head unit and three-way 6x9 speakers take up residence in the front and rear of the 2502, respectively. Rockford Fosgate 5.25-inch 2-ways and components take care of the the mids and highs, while a T1002 mono amplifier dri es two Cerwin Vega 12-inch subwoofers in a custom enclosure. That should be more than enough bump for the daily grind. “It’s a father and son build, and we both have input on the car,” a chuckling Ricardo explains. “Sometimes he surprises me by changing things, and most of the time I like it. There have been a lot of arguments and long nights, but best of all there are all the great memories we have created.” And that’s exactly what makes a car like this so special. A 10-year endeavor between father and son, and the whole time they listened to no one but themselves. They ignored the purists telling them to upgrade with BMW parts instead of something else that could work just as well with a little elbow grease, and shut out those who don’t agree with the journey their 2002 has taken. This is a build completed by the truest of car enthusiasts, something put so simply by Ricardo: “Some people like sports or movies, but for my dad and I, it’s cars.” 88

SHOOTING STARS A STAR ROAD GT-R DOUBLE SHOT STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM ZILLIN
I’m still pinching myself that it actually came to pass. Initially, I thought the opportunity had faded, months having passed since learning the very rare and valuable machine was heading way up north to its owner (and far away from my Nikon lenses) but fate, as is often the case, had other ideas.

AND THEN THE MUSIC DIED. WHEN EMISSIONS LAWS CHANGED AND THE OIL SHOCK OF 1973 HIT JAPAN, THE ENTIRE COUNTRY WENT INTO A STATE OF THINLY VEILED FLUX.
A
nd so it came to be that the unmolested, super rare Kenmeri KPGC110 GT-R you see here was brought back down from Hokkaido on tuning matters only days before I called my good friend Shoji Inoue from Star Road to complain about the missed opportunity. The irony! That’s not to take away from the Hakosuka you also see here in the pages of PASMAG; a car so incredibly beautiful inside and out that it was also begging to be taken along. And in hindsight, I nearly overlooked it - mesmerised by the KPGC110 GT-R’s genuine luster and star studded rarity. The facts are clear though. While they may carry similar paint, wheels and bronzed lips, the two cars could not be di˜ erent and yet are any more diff equally as incredible in their own particular ways. I’m not even sure where to begin but my spiritual animal is calling out the
Ken Meri on this one. The “Hako", without question, is going to take more time to explain! Nissan started production on the KPGC110 for racing homologation purposes; continued dominance of the Japanese racing circuit the intent. The “Kenmeri”, as it came to be known, was the evolutionary step up from the Hakosuka that Nissan pinned its motorsport hopes to. They began production with the same methods used to craft the Hakosuka KPGC10 coupe, also utilizing the tried, tested and all conquering twin cam, 24-valve S20 engine as the power plant, a stout fi five-speed manual and the same front and rear chassis assembly. It was rare at the time for a car to have all-wheel disc brakes, but that’s only one of the many high performance features the KPGC110 came with from factory. It was touted as the greatest production car Japan had ever made. And then the music died.

SHOOTING STARS ANY CLASSIC THAT INOUE AND THE TEAM TOUCH TURNS TO GOLD; EVEN WHEN ADMINISTERING SPECIAL CARE TO AN OLD TIMER LIKE THE KPGC110. When emissions laws changed and the oil shock of 1973 hit Japan, the entire country went into a state of thinly veiled flux. The ensuring turmoil meant certain death for sports cars (including the Kenmeri GT-R), as the 197th GT-R ground o˜ the production line to the great despair of those who had lovingly crafted the 196 that preceded it. Game over. The world wouldn’t see another Nissan wearing a GT-R badge until more than a decade later when the R32 was released in 1989. This period
92

of forced cryostasis only served to further enhance the legend; the GT-R badge rising from a king of the circuits to the mythical beast of Japanese auto tuning we know it as today. And I was sitting in one of the last to be completed; #148. It’s always a special occasion with these cars. The heavy mist of nostalgia always descends when I’m close to any genuine Kenmeri KPGC110 and this was no exception. But this is no ordinary GT-R. In the hands of Inoue-san, it has undergone a moderate, by Star Road standards, restoration; the addition of thick Glow Stars with bronze lips being a highlight. Any classic that Inoue and the team touch turns to gold; even when administering special care to an old timer like the KPGC110. It benefits greatly from a StarRoad-spec harmonic drive kit and Kenmeri-specific eight-way adjustable dampers with adjustable rear pillow mount lower arms. It might look a tad high in the shots, but that’s due to the clearance
it needed for the 930-mile ferry journey to Tokyo. Remember, this is a car, especially in this state, that is worth close to a quarter million dollars, so damage is unconscionable. I have been fortunate to have caught a few of these rare beasts; at last count 24 of them and this is among the best I’ve ever seen. It rides beautifully too - the uprated suspension damping and increased drivetrain feel add up to a supremely supple and pleasant drive. The Star Road custom exhaust system supplying the glorious sound track. You don’t work these cars - you caress them. The same though cannot be said of the fire-breathing Hakosuka. It’s a di˜ erent beast, and although not a GT-R, is superior to the factory version in every single way, inside and out. This car has been a complete eye-opener since, having pored over the details on the surface, inside the car, and under the hood, it wasn’t until it was lifted on the hoists that I truly lost my breath, along with my sense of time and space.

I couldn’t take my o˜ the underside any more eyes off than I could peel myself away from floor. the workshop fl specifiA customer car created specifi cally with drivability in mind, this
Hako has had the absolute works thrown at it. The heart of the matter brings into view a gleaming Star Road works L28 bored to three liters that packs over 310 horsepower at 7,500 rpm. The head has been machined, ported, and polished. It carries a metal head gasket, increased compression, reprofiled 75-degree cam with overprofi sized intake and exhaust valves measuring 45-mm and 36.5-mm, respectively. These are then sup-
ported by high lift valve springs, o˜ set ABB/PBB valve stem guides, off valve retainers, Kameari oversized pistons, Wako H-beam connecting rods, and a shot-peened and knifeedged crank. On the induction side of things, there are the gorgeous triple Solex 44-mm diameter carburetors mated to a custom manifold and short trumpet stacks to improve acceleration. The Hako spits out gasses through a fully custom Star Road “shakotan” exhaust system that interestingly exits the “takoashi” extractors at 80 mm and then shrinks slightly to 70 mm before hitting the custom catalyser at 80 mu˝ er mm again, then exits the muffl at 90 mm. This unusual arrangement is absolutely deliberate and fine tuning in the work of years of fi the study of exhaust back pressure e˜ ect on drivability, reand its eff sponse, acoustics, and resonance for all of Star Road’s exhaust systems. The Hakosuka absolutely wails on the limit with a sharp piecing rasp coming from the induction, followed by a deep howl from the exhaust. The Kenmeri, in stark contrast, is relatively subdued and much more civil with its orchestra; significant diff di˜ erence being the the signifi smaller diameter of the system overall and the combination of a 6-2-2-1-2 setup to the Hakosuka’s 6-2-1-2-1 arrangement. Fascinating stu˜ stuff.

NATURALLY, THE CROWN JEWELS FOR THESE MACHINES ARE STAR ROAD’S GLOW STAR THREE-PIECE FORGED WHEELS.
Inoue-san likes the R32 quite a five-speed lot and uses the Type-M fi box to add a modern throw to a classic platform. This is backed up by a newly-developed OS-Giken twin-plate clutch, pressure plate, flywheel assembly. and lightened fl Rowing with this box is crisp and precise when compared to the Kenmeri's longer and more buttery throw, but again, this is a tale of two very distinct and contrasting flavors for an enthusiast’s palate. fl

Ancillaries for the Hakosuka include a lot of other Star Road original parts, not limited to the dual-core radiator and heatshielded alternator. Giving the Hako a supreme ride is another set of the same eight-way adjustable custom Star Road dampers that also adorn the Kenmeri. The whole thing drives through an R200 differential (of course) and is pulled up by R32 Type-M calipers, front and rear.
Inside, there are other touches fist in velvet glove” apof the “new fi proach Star Road is renowned for, Defi gauges and a pair of including Defi expensive leather-bound Recaro Sportster LL100H semi-buckets. Each is fully electric and heated, weighing in at just over $1,800 per seat with custom rails! Naturally, the crown jewels for these machines are Star Road’s Glow Star three-piece forged wheels. On the Kenmeri, they measure 15x9 -15 at the front and 15x10 -28 at the rear. For the Hako o˜ set is slightly diff di˜ erent at the the off front with a +10 off o˜ set supplying fit due to the chassis’ a shallower fi narrower dimensions. It’s hard to put these cars into words at the best of times when they are bone stock. Seeing them
after Inoue-san has fi finished with them is a very special treat, and driving them is an experience I will never forget. As we all grow older and these cars become increasingly rarer, valuable, and exclusive, it’s not without foreshadowing that I can clearly say that the golden age of tuning is not only upon us, but central to everything we all hold dear about Japan’s best sports machines. Star Road continues to relentlessly raise the bar in pursuit of absolute perfection and, in my mind, these creations have absolutely no peer.
