Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution is a platform hailed by enthusiasts worldwide as a genuine all-rounder. With stylish four-door design, a sophisticated allwheel-drive system, and an incredibly potent four-cylinder engine capable of massive power, it really does check all of the boxes for many enthusiasts across its many generations. And while all Evolutions are special in their own right, the Evo X holds a special place in the hearts of Jason and Sean of DSG Performance, as well as their most recent customer, Devan VanBrunt, the owner of the mean machine you see here.

efore we jump into the Evo, some background on DSG Performance: Founded in 2008, DSG Performance was built from the ground up by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. The goal was to utilize their combined automotive knowledge to ensure customers not only get the best products, but the best experience with their builds as well. Now immensely successful

(and you’ll see why when we dig into some of their work here), the company is very selective on what they take on as full blown projects. “Builds are not something we take on every day,” says Sean, Co-Founder of DSG, “We select a few builds per year that we want to do based on the customer, the build intent, and the expected timeline to make sure we can fit it into a schedule that

will make sense.” The shop isn’t simply set up to throw a few boltons on your ride and send you on your way – these guys specialize in going the distance, and that commitment seems to be infectious.

Last year, the DSG Performance team built a Varis Widebody Evolution X for one of their long-time customers, David Boudreau. That build was launched at Importfest 2016, and it ended up dominating the Baddest Lancer award, beating out a number of other Mitsubishis. VanBrunt saw the award-winning Evo X on DSG’s social media pages, and that was the point of no return for him. Jason, DSG’s Sales Manager, lets us in on the conversation that followed: “I believe his words when we fi st spoke were ‘I want exactly that - but with 800-horsepowerplus, full interior done, drag or track ready, done up engine bay, with a full drivetrain build and under-chassis.’ The list was pretty much endless! I knew it was going to be a monumental build, but couldn’t wait to get started on it.”

A monumental build is exactly what was in store with VanBrunt’s Evo. “Devan literally sent us a stock car with less than 10,000 miles on it and a sky’s-the-limit goal,” Jason tells us. “Being given keys to a car and having your customer put their full trust in you to build them what they want, knowing you will come through - it’s really something special.” With a blank slate, a generous budget, and an aspirational goal for the platform, the masterminds at DSG Performance were free to paint a masterpiece on this blank canvas. Using the template of their Importfest 2016 build for David Boudreau as the starting point, DSG made quick work of the initial modifications. Through years of trial and error on our personal cars, we have gone through a gamut of brands and manufacturers and

know what works and doesn’t,” says Jason. “We are huge believers in certain brands after years of working together, like AMS/Alpha Performance, Fortune Auto, Varis Japan, Radium Engineering, Rays Wheels, Autopower and GiroDisc

to name a few.” As you could probably have guessed, each of those brands play an integral role in VanBrunt’s Evo build. The striking appearance from all angles comes courtesy of a wide variety of Varis goods, but

the real star among the bodywork is the Varis Type B widebody kit, complete with carbon fiber Varis accessories in the form of canards, a rear diffuse , exhaust heat shields, and Varis’ coveted Ultimate Cooling Bonnet hood. A DoLuck FRP trunk gives the back some aggressive looks, but it doesn’t stop there. Varis’ 1,600mm Euro wing is secured to the trunk on a custom pair of mounts that were redesigned specifically o fit the DoLuck trunk s ducktail shape. At ground level, beautiful deep red Rays Gram Lights 57DR wheels sit square at 18x10.5 +12 on all four corners, allowed to just barely tuck the treads on a set of 295-mm-wide Nitto Invo tires thanks to Fortune Auto’s “DSG

Edition” setup, comprised of 510 Series coilovers and a super cool air cup kit. Accuair takes care of air management, and a combination of Cusco, Whiteline, and Autopower suspension goodies keep handling rigid for sporty response. Inside the cockpit, you’ll find a pair of Sparco Evo II US racing seats and matching harnesses, carbon fiber trim from Aerolab MTL, and Tanabe Revel gauges to get data feedback from the monster beneath the hood. Ah yes, the 4B11T. Undeniably one of the most potent fourcylinder engines on the market during its production time, and still a fierce competi or today, the Mitsubishi compact powerhouse is really what some of you are reading this for, isn’t it?

WITHOUT GOING FOR A FULL STROKER KIT, ENGINE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE SOLID INSIDE AND OUT.

VanBrunt told DSG he wanted 800+ horsepower, and they delivered. Boosted by a modest (relatively speaking) Precision Turbo Gen II 6266 BB turbocharger designed for less lag in throttle response, the engine in this car is truly the coup de grâce in an already spectacular build. Without going for a full stroker kit, engine assembly needed to be solid inside and out. Manley’s Extreme Duty piston set and Turbo Tuff ro Series I-beam rod set meet up with Darton wet sleeves to make a war-ready combustion chamber out of the 4B11T’s

internals. The Turcotte Racing fully match-ported head contains ARP studs, AMS Performance TMP camshafts, Ferrea Competition Plus oversize valves, dual valve springs and titanium retainers, as well as Injector Dynamics ID2000 fuel injectors. The entire head assembly meets the block by way of a Cosworth 87-mm x 1.3-mm head gasket, designed to handle ungodly amounts of boost and bang. The fuel load required to sustain maximum combustion at high RPM is handled by dual Walbro fuel pumps, and air fl w is handled by AMS’ short ram MAF

intake, a Blitz intake manifold, and interestingly, a Mitsubishi Eclipse V6’s 65-mm throttle body. In addition to keeping airfl w temperatures low with a 4-inch FMIC and piping, ETS also handles the Evo’s exhaust with a V2 Extreme exhaust system. I can assure you, it sounds as good as the name implies. All in, the system is good for approximately 800 whp,

having dyno-proven 712 whp on a “heartbreaker” Mustang Dyno. Transferring all that power efficiently and sa ely to the ground is the job of a specially built drivetrain, something the guys at DSG know their way around. A Sheptrans GSR built 5-speed transmission is mated to a TWM short shifter and weighted shift knob for quick gear changes, and an AMS Performance triple metallic clutch allows the power to be transferred down the line at high RPM. From there, a 2-piececarbon fiber CV dri eshaft sends rotating power back to a Cusco Evo 9 1.5-way differential and finally out to the Sheptrans hybrid Evo X/9 axle setup, delivering maximum power to the wheels, which can barely keep that power from spinning all four. “Devan’s Evo is a Final Edition - one of the last ones ever built,” Sean reminds us. “So in building it, we wanted to go above and beyond anything that had been done before in terms of overall build quality to truly build the ultimate Final Edition Evo X.” And it would seem that the DSG Performance team pulled out all the stops, cutting no corners in creating the absolute ultimate street Evo X. As far as all-round performance builds go, this one will be hard to top for any Evo enthusiast.

From sport compacts to heavyweight muscle cars, Daijiro Yoshihara has raced with the full gamut during his tenure in Formula Drift. One of the few drivers to have been around since the inaugural 2004 season, Yoshihara continues to impress as the sport evolves year after year, looking towards a follow up of his successful 2011 championship. In 2017, his ride of choice is the Falken Tire / Turn 14 Distribution Subaru BRZ, the culmination of performance engineering with Japanese soul.

t all starts with the car’s look, updated for 2017 with a standout new color scheme completed by Sam’s Auto Land paint and Daley Visual wrap. Weight savings are paramount to any racer, so Yoshihara turned to the mass saving experts at Seibon Carbon. Carbon fiber roo , doors, and a vented hood shed the pounds and lower the center of gravity for the BRZ, improving maneuverability in drift transitions. TRA Kyoto burst onto the scene when the BRZ fi st launched with unique Rocket Bunny widebody aero kits, and they have continued to innovate with new styles. Yoshihara’s ride sports the V3 design,

featuring a front fascia, oversized front and rear fender extensions, and a ducktail trunk lid spoiler. The front is further enhanced with an APR splitter, generating downforce to keep the car balanced. The package weighs in at a staunch 3,000 pounds, an important stat when it comes to the choice of tires in Formula D. Yoshihara earned his 2011 Formula Drift championship with Falken, and continues the partnership today. His BRZ sports their latest RK615T+ performance tires, sized at 265-mm front and 295-mm rear. The car’s weight (plus the driver) allows for up to the 295 maximum, which is good because extra rubber means more smoke, blinding chase drivers and impressing the judges through

banked circuit sweepers. Those tires come wrapped around a set of Yoshihara’s own design of 18-inch wheels: the three-piece “Champion” model. He’s been running his own model wheels since the 2011 season - the year he won it all. Looking inside, things have been flipped around in erms of the layout. Yoshihara may be a switch hitter, able to expertly navigate behind the wheel from either side, but, like any Japanese native, he prefers a right-hand drive setup. The dashboard was a breeze, grabbing a JDM panel from a BRZ abroad, but the real magic of moving the Momo steering wheel and Jamar Performance pedal set over was left to Yoshihara’s crew chief, Chris Eimer of Eimer Engineering. Eimer put together a custom steering rack, complete with tie rods and front knuckles to connect with the extreme turning angles

WELTERWEIGHT the sport is known for. Yoshihara is held in place by a Momo Daytona racing seat and a Takata six-point HANS Formula harness. The front footwell is taken up by a Coolshirt Systems cooling unit, pumping icy water through Yoshihara’s race suit. The rest of the interior is fit ed up with an SPD Motorsports roll cage, along with some stitch welding to the bare chassis to stiffen things up. The steering wasn’t the only part of this BRZ to get swapped out. Yoshihara’s MoTeC SDL race dash and MoTeC M800 ECU drive one monster of a powerplant under the carbon hood. It begins with a Racing Head Service (RHS) aluminum LSX block, displacing a whopping seven liters of V8 madness. JE Pistons and All Pro heads were brought in to handle the massive amounts of power that would be thrown at it, and the engine was topped off with a Wilson Manifolds custom billet aluminum intake manifold, CNC-machined to fit snugly in th compact bay. Following the fl w farther, a 90-mm Wilson throttle body reacts to the lightest touch of the go-fast pedal, drawing fresh air directly from the Bell intercooler, a part that can only mean one thing: this coupe is turbocharged. Yoshihara went with the latest Garrett GTX5533R Gen II on the build, a charger normally boxed for high-torque diesel industrial motors. All that air deserves a healthy dose of gasoline to ignite properly, meaning the fuel system needed careful attention. An Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator feeds into Wilson fuel rails and Bosch 1,600cc fuel injectors for maximum combustion. Eimer Engineering also fabricated an impressive set of hand-bent exhaust manifolds, which mate up with Turbosmart wastegates and blow-off alves to complete the package. MotoIQ’s own Mike Kojima, another of Yoshihara’s trusted race posse, put all the pieces together and sprinkled some Eneos racing fluids in o keep the beast operating smoothly.

Power is rated at a staggering 962 horsepower and 832 lb-ft of torque. Like any good turbocharged application, the boost can be adjusted depending on the needs of the circuit, and the team joke that it has been too much for some dynos to handle. Yoshihara is man enough to tame it though, knowing just the right moves to punch in with the big boys of drifting.

All that power can’t simply spin through the crank without somewhere to go. First stop, a competition clutch and flywhee package by McLeod, another of Yoshihara’s long term partners in success. From there, a GSR four-speed dogbox transmission takes over, passing the ball back through a Drivelines driveshaft to the Winters Performance differential. Yoshihara selected a 10-inch spool-type quick change rear end with the BRZ, rather than a limitedslip, to get a consistent lock and power application with each run. It’s part of the character of every drift build that can only be refine by the driver’s style and how he feels comfortable to perform on the world’s biggest sideways stage. Driveshaft Shop custom axles send the juice to the rear corners, propelling the blue and black rocket across the asphalt, begging to be pushed harder and harder, like a true glutton for punishment. Brakes are another piece of the puzzle that each driver has a strong opinion on. A pull of the handbrake or a tap of the middle pedal can help keep the car twisted, and Yoshihara knew exactly what hardware he wanted behind each. Large Jamar Performance six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers latch onto Wilwood

rotors and brake pads. Out back, a second set of four-piston calipers are dedicated to handbrake duties, separating the action to allow for controlled input of each. Nestled above the brake system is a set of KW three-way adjustable competition coilovers with remote reservoirs. The shock/spring body even features its own dust cover, improving reliability when tons of tire carcass are flying past. A se of Progress front and rear sway bars further allow Yoshihara to dial in the right amount of stiffness key to hitting a 30-degree bank or figure-eight-style transition. ach modification orks in tandem with the rest, adding up to the meanest BRZ in Formula Drift competition. Yoshihara’s on-track performance alone would be enough to merit pages upon pages of praise and dissection, yet his off-track spirit should not be lost on fans either. Since the events of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Northeastern Japan, Yoshihara has

taken a philanthropic approach to his public status, setting up his own charity called Relief For Japan. To date he has raised over $80,000, with proceeds going directly to the Japanese Red Cross Society. Let's face it - when it comes to car modifying culture, trends come and go. Things like neon lights, flashy paint styles and body kits are cool, but only for a certain amount of time (in one form, anyway). Although the difference in taste is what can cause a lot of controversy in the car community, one thing is for sure: good brakes don't go out of style.

Signs you might need replacement Being proactive about replacing your brakes can actually save you a lot of money. If brake pads are run too worn, they can damage the brake rotors, turning a simple pad replacement and service into a full brake job. Aside from keeping an eye on mileage (some pads should be replaced after a certain distance travelled), ask yourself these questions on your next drive: Does your steering wheel shake every time you use your brakes? Does your car pull to one side when you slow down? Does your car make horrible noises (squealing and/or clicking) upon depression of the brake pedal? If you can identify with any of these symptoms, it’s time to change your brakes.

The importance of cleaning your brakes

When it comes to bedding your brakes, fi st impressions are everything and improperly bedded brakes can drastically hinder a brake kit's performance. Simply stated, bedding-in your brakes is the initial transfer of brake pad onto the brake rotor contact surface. This is done by strategically heating and cooling the brake pads through a series of well-thought-out, hard stops. Improper or no bed-in can cause poor braking performance, so this procedure should be redone whenever the brake rotors are cleaned or replaced.

The most important thing you can do immediately after an install (and before you put your wheel on) is take a can of brake cleaner (you know, the stuff ou use for everything except your brake rotors), and spray a good amount into a rag and wipe the rotors down. You can be liberal with it; this stuff e aporates quickly. The reason? Unless you are installing coated rotors (like our Elite XDS series), your brand-new brakes will have a very thin layer of grease on them to prevent rust during shipping and storage. Brake cleaner gets rid of that layer and does wonders for your break-in period, which you’ll want to go as smoothly as possible.

I’ll always remember talking with Pat Cyr of Cyrious Garageworks as he was buttoning up the install on the Vortech Supercharger going into my FR-S. We were both impressed that the tune from Vortech allowed the car to run at nine PSI and reach almost 300 horses, yet not need to upgrade the fuelling. You’re also able to run the stock clutch with this tune, but Cyr, a master of the 86 arts, knew that was only for a limited time.

“YOU STILL HAVE THE STOCK CLUTCH IN THERE?” CYR ASKED, GRINNING. “YEAH, I DO,” I REPLIED.

set. I ended up with a Street Elite clutch from their Tuner Series on-route to the office a I couldn’t wait to get it bolted up and spinning away. So, why did we choose the Street Elite clutch kit? Most importantly, the power rating was exactly what I was looking for. Rated at 50 to 70 percent more power than stock was perfect for me, since I’m currently making about 50 percent more than stock, and this leaves some room to grow. Also, the combination of the high-clamp-load pressure plate and sprung-hub carbon-organic disc (I was told) still offer smooth engagement and better holding power; something I need for daily driving, and something my stock clutch wasn’t giving me anymore. After a bit of a wait, the black and red McLeod box was sitting on my desk and I was booking

shop time. For a clean, decentlylit place to shoot, plus a trusted installer, I gave Jamie Campbell at Grounded Conceptz a shout, and, as usual, he hooked it up. He gave me a date and time and arranged for Bartek Stopa, an experienced Subaru tech, to come in and head-up the installation. Soon, my car was up on the scissor lift at Grounded Conceptz and Stopa was stacking parts on the floor in front of me. With th underbody covers, the middle portion of the exhaust, and the driveshaft out, Stopa was able to unclip the transmission from the tunnel and then unbolt the rear to unveil the OE clutch setup. After yanking the pressure plate, disc, flywheel clutch fork and throw-out bearing (all still hot to the touch from my commute), we could see the signs of wear and tear from contact and the discolorations from heat.

e was right. About a year later, I noticed less pressure from the clutch, missed shifts due to some slipping, and less power being transferred to the ground. It was time for a new clutch; an upgraded clutch. Now, I’ll level with you: I’ve never owned a boosted car before. Previously, I’ve only owned Hondas from when I was a fi st-time driver to a poor college student, and forced induction was out of reach, leaving me to settle for VTEC instead. As such, I’ve never had an upgraded clutch before and didn’t really know where to start, so I contacted our friends over at McLeod for a helping hand. After speaking with Bob Scheid and Krista Baldwin at McLeod and explaining my power level, driving habits, and modifications, I wa

CLUTCH When comparing the components side by side, the biggest differences I noticed were the clutch disc’s springs were shorter and thicker and the throw-out bearing was a lot more heavy-duty, which should aid in providing smoother engagement and some better bite. The pressure plate is also red, so I’m pretty sure that’s guaranteed bolt-on horsepower. After the flywheel had i s bearing replaced and surface cleaned up, and the McLeod throw-out bearing was mounted to the clutch fork, Stopa reversed the process to install the new clutch. With everything finally bol ed back up, it was time to take the car off the lift. CLUTCH SAVING TIPS If you’ve just installed a new clutch, or you’re trying to keep the one you have alive, here’s a big tip that can help extend the life of your drivetrain. When you are stopped at a light or in some stop-and-go traffic, take your car out of gear into neutral, instead of leaving the car in gear and the clutch pedal fully depressed. Leaving the car like that for extended periods of time can seriously stress out your clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and even your clutch fork. If you’ve come to a standstill, pop it in neutral. We would also say to avoid burnouts, but we won’t tell you how to live your life.

of a surprise. As I thought I was being “easy” on fi st gear to get the car to roll off, the clutch bit way before I was ready and shot a piece of plywood behind me. It had been so long without a proper clutch that I forgot what engagement was supposed to feel like, but after a short test drive, I soon remembered. As the clutch is worked in, I’m sure things will get even smoother, and it won’t be long of a break-in period either since the new clutch just makes me want to get out and drive more. Make sure your power is supported because you don’t know what you could be missing out on!

F

or Sinh Nguyen, life had to rear-end him three times before he got the hint that he should build something radical and unique. That’s not a euphemism either. “At the start of 2017, I was rearended in my drift G35,” Nguyen begins, cringing. “Two weeks later, I was rear-ended again in my rental car that I received from the G35 accident. Then, two weeks after the second accident, my NA Miata was hit

in my own parking lot while I was recovering from my second accident.” Of course, the jokes about bubble-wrapping himself and his cars were started after that. Nguyen’s buddy, JD Durham of Krowrx, even dropped a joke that he should just build an exo car like his Integra. Then it wouldn’t matter if it got hit, since the whole thing is pretty much a giant tube frame. Nguyen quipped back that he’d have a car to him within a week, and to Durham’s surprise, he wasn’t joking. Let’s back up a second here. Some of you may be asking, “What is an exo car?” Great question! Exo cars are usually two door cars that are stripped of their body panels and even some bits of their chassis, which are then replaced with

bash bars, roll caging, and tube chassis – all welded at specifi points with maximum safety in mind. Think of it like a superlightweight sport compact hot rod. Durham’s company, Krowrx, actually specializes in fabricating these exo cars and offers them in different trim levels. K1: Utilizes a basic cage, but still retains some body panels. K2: Stripped and made into a cage car, but keeps some streetcar luxuries (power steering, air conditioning, etc.). K3: Completely stripped and made into a cage car with a basic wire tuck. So, Nguyen went on the hunt for an ideal chassis to turn into a bare bones street racer. Already being familiar with the chassis on his NA Miata and how fun that is to drive around,

he decided that having a raw NB MX-5 would be an absolute blast. A week after speaking to Durham, he had picked up his own 2003 MX-5, and three days after that, it was at Krowrx for teardown. “It’s a Miata, so it’s got the best bang for buck performance,” Nguyen explains of his choice. “I decided to make a light and nimble car even lighter and nimbler.” Nguyen’s M-EXO-5 (amazing name) would get the K2 treatment and be turned into a complete cage car, but retain its power steering, heat, and air conditioning, and gain a purple paintjob. Not much is going on under the hood, not that it has one anymore. The only addition made to the 1.8-liter BP-ZE Mazda inline-four is an HPS short ram intake, which leaves power levels right around

the stock 146 horse and 124 lb-ft digits. Some may turn their noses up at those power levels, but when it’s coming out of an MX-5 that has shed anywhere from 700 to 900 pounds, leaving the car right around 1,500 pounds soaking wet, that power-to-weight ratio makes things feel twice as quick! While they do make great show cars, Nguyen wanted something he could compete with in time attack and even drift, so he made sure the M-EXO-5 was equipped with what he’d need to be competitive. Bilstein HD shocks and MazdaSpeed springs provide the road feedback that Nguyen is looking for, and he even upgraded the brakes to the MazdaSpeed Sport package for a little extra insurance. Transferring power is a Flyin’ Miata “Happy Meal” clutch kit through a Torsen LSD, and spinning that power to the ground is a square set of MST Time Attack 15x8inch wheels in Nitto Neo Gen 205/50 cladding. Headlights and taillights have been replaced by LED offerings, with a six-bulb pod for each side up front, and a set of strips shining red out back. A GT wing with custom brackets that cling

to the bracing in the rear hints at the performance potential of the exo car, while a Lexan plexiglass windshield allows Nguyen to cruise without a helmet or goggles. Inside are two bright red Sparco Sprint racing seats with Takata Drift II

four-point harnesses, because when you have no body panels, staying safe inside the car is pretty important in case things go south – plus, Nguyen has that nasty habit of getting hit.

The M-EXO-5 was the second exo car built by Krowrx, with the fi st being the one that started it all – Durham’s Xtegra (another great name). Starting with a ’98 Acura Integra, Durham stripped it down to the bare necessities, K3-style, and wire-tucked the nest around the Honda B18B1 engine, leaving an absolutely spartan frame to build on. The teal cage car, with its red-topped B-series being the only indicator left that it’s still an Integra, proudly shows off its PLM Tri-Y header just behind its front bash bar, right where the radiator should be. The Mishimoto radiator is custom rear-mounted just below the GT wing, which when paired with the splitter up front and 15x10-inch GP steelies in meaty Nitto NT-01s all around, gives off a otal racecar feel. Similar to Nguyen’s car, LED pods and strips take up headlight and taillight duties. Durham pilots from a Kirkey Drag Series racing seat, strapped in by way of G-Force racing harnesses. In front of him are a Lion Racing steering wheel, pedals, a relocated battery, and the factory gauge cluster. What else do you need, really?

MIRACULOUSLY, THESE EXO CARS ARE PLATED AND LEGAL IN ALABAMA, AND HAVEN’T GOTTEN EITHER OWNER IN ANY TROUBLE WITH THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES. KROWRX BUILDS THEIR EXO CARS TO THE CUSTOMER’S STATE LAWS FOR A “STREETABLE” CAR, SO DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE, THINGS COULD BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. The two exo cars made their debut at Gridlife South this year, and Nguyen says that their welcome was as expected: dropped jaws and broken necks. Being Gridlife, there are a ton of events you can register your car for, so the two got into autocross and had a blast, saying that the cars performed much better than expected.

“The best example I could give would be going to work and out clubbing without any clothes on,” Nguyen says of the driving experience. “Everybody stares at you like you’re crazy, but secretly, they want to do it themselves.” Miraculously, these exo cars are plated and legal in Alabama, and haven’t gotten either owner

in any trouble with the local authorities. Krowrx builds their exo cars to the customer’s state laws for a “streetable” car, so depending on where you live, things could be a little different. If you’re interested in building a skeleton-mobile like these guys, we’d suggest doing some research on what your state allows.

As for what’s next, Nguyen tells us there’s whispers of turbos on the horizon, but time will only tell there. In the meantime, we’re sure these two will be having an (just like Nguyen’s vanity plate) EXOLNT time regardless.

V8S ARE SO LAST YEAR

Cruising through the SEMA show, running to different client meetings, and snapping quick pictures along the way, it takes something pretty crazy to make you completely stop in your tracks – and that’s exactly what happened the first time I saw a V12LS engine. Nestled in a wild 1967 Camaro was a bright-green, ITB’d engine that I didn’t recognize, with a network of headers trailing off of it. Counting the individual throttle bodies, I deduced it was a 12-cylinder, and then heard who I assumed was the owner excitedly telling a crowd of onlookers that this engine was a V12 built with LS engine parts. While I was blown away by this information, I couldn’t stop to chat and headed towards the New Product Showcase Hall to judge some new products as a Global Media Awards judge. This is where I saw my second V12LS, this one in red, sitting on an engine cradle where I could really take in the details of the custom longblock.

f course, I had to give an award to this engine, as it was not only truly unique, but something I could see builders from all over gravitating towards. That night at the media reception, I met up with the brothers behind V12LS, Matt and Shane Corish, hailing all the way from Australia, and had a great, lengthy chat about the development of their engine. After they had shipped their fi st batch of engines for 2017, I wanted to follow-up and see how business was going. My chat with co-founder Matt Corish was not only informational, but teased some exciting developments to come. Here’s how it went down:

Making your own engines definitely means you’re into cars. Tell me about your automotive fascination and where it started. We both started playing with cars and bikes at an early age, modifying just about everything we could get our hands on. Growing up on a farm, you learn to make better parts when you break something, and we both have a strong interest in anything different, from rotary engines to old flatheads Being based in Australia. How would you say the car scene differs or is similar to the scene in the US? Australia has a smaller population and proportionally less petrol heads, but the Aussies literally drive the wheels off their ca s at events. Just Google “Summernats Burnout” and you will see what I mean. In the U.S., the average quality of builds is much higher and you can legally cruise the streets with blowers and big rubber, while things are much more restricted down under. Was the American market always the plan for V12LS? Yes, we set out to bring a new dimension to custom car building and America is certainly the place to do that.

V8S ARE SO LAST YEAR We were first exposed to V12LS at SEMA 2016. How was your experience at SEMA, and what did you take away from it? SEMA 2016 was huge for us. At that stage, we had only two prototype engines; one in the new product display, and one in the V12 Camaro of Mike Heim from Quality Custom Rides. We were there to gauge the response from the industry to see if the V12LS was a product worth pursuing. The response from everyone at the show was amazing! We received fi e awards, including runner-up for Best Engineered New Product.

What kinds of difficulties did you come across while developing the engines? How many prototypes did you go through? We prototyped three engines and these welded prototypes were very difficult. They had o be cut, machined, V'd out, heated, welded, reheat-treated, then re-machined to make sure everything aligned again. Fully sealing the water jackets and keeping everything straight while welding was challenging. We have overcome most of these issues now, and casting our own blocks certainly helped with that.

Tell me about how V12LS came to be. How did you guys come up with the idea and how were you able to get the ball rolling? At SEMA 2015, we saw hundreds of highly modified ehicles, crazy trucks and hotrods, but most of them all had one thing in common, an off-the-shelf crate engine. When people saw something different, like a hot rod with a Cummins diesel, they went crazy. We realized we could offer an alternative engine that is as unique as the rest of these builds; something new and exciting.

Besides the block, what else does V12LS produce for the engine? At V12LS, we make everything that you need to build an engine that you can't get from a standard LS engine. This includes the block, heads, oil pan, crank, cam, valley plate, intake, and rocker covers.

Take me through the manufacturing of a V12LS engine. What kinds of techniques and materials are used? We use a combination of traditional and high tech manufacturing techniques to create the one-piece cast V12LS blocks. Starting with a CAD design of each component, we then CNCmill the patterns to be used for sand casting. In some cases, we 3D print the sand cores for prototyping, which is great for very complicated cores, such as the cylinder head water jackets. Once the sand molds are ready, the blocks are cast at the foundry in either iron or aluminum. Aluminum blocks are heat-treated to T6, while iron blocks are naturally aged for a few weeks before machining. The raw casting is then put on two different CNC machines where all the surfaces are cleaned up and the holes are drilled and tapped. After CNC machining, the cylinders, lifter bores, and main tunnels are honed to size, and the aluminum blocks are fit ed with dry sleeves.

Why did you choose LS engine parts to work with your blocks? The LS is such a good engine. They are a nice combination of traditional simplicity and modern design. The aftermarket support is huge, so we can buy everything we need off the shel . Companies like JE Pistons now even offer balanced sets of 12 pistons to suit the V12LS.

V8S ARE SO LAST YEAR

Is there a learning curve here, or is it almost the same as working on a longer LS V8? Any engine builder familiar with the LS can build our V12 the same way they would build the V8. All techniques and tolerances are the same, it just takes a little longer to put together. The only real difference is in setting up the engine management system. Did you guys ever have a certain application in mind when developing the engine, or was it always meant to be as universal as possible? High-end custom cars were the applications we had in mind, and, at only 8.8 inches longer than a traditional V8 LS, they will fit in most ehicles that have an inline-six option. The swap is relatively easy into an early GM muscle car and really takes the build to another level. When a customer orders an engine from you, what kinds of options do they have offered by you? We offer an engine builder kit, as well as longblocks and turnkey engines. The engine builder kit comes with everything unique to the V12, allowing the builder to create their own V12LS using off-the-shelf parts. We offer LS3 and LSX bore sizes, and either cathedral port or LS7style heads. The turnkey engines have a sheet metal intake, and come with a Haltech ECU that’s tuned and ready to drop into the car. We include exhaust flanges, so all ou need to do is get some headers made and you are good to go!

What is the performance potential of a V12LS engine? How crazy have you seen things get? We typically see a little over one-and-a-half times the power of the equivalent built V8, which is due to the perfect balance of the V12 rotating assembly and less accessory drive losses. Our blocks are designed with Siamese bores and extra webbing, making them very strong. Over 1,000 naturally-aspirated horsepower is easily achievable on pump fuel with a street friendly cam. We are expecting to see some boosted engines this year though, which is really exciting. What have you seen a V12LS swapped into so far? It’s still early days for us, with only one batch of engines out the door in 2017, but there are some interesting swaps going on. GM cars, such as the Camaro and Tri-Five are most popular. Cheetah Evolution are building a V12LS Cheetah! That thing is going to be crazy. Personally, I would love to see a V12 GTO Judge. We are also working with a Formula Drift driver on a mid-engine, twin-supercharged V12LS monster.

What’s next for V12LS? We will continue to push the V12LS engines further with larger heads and boost to see what they are really capable of. We have other designs for unique engines across many makes and platforms. Any plans for a V12 Barra? (Ford Australia’s awesome 4.0L inline-six engines) Actually, we are very familiar with the Australian continuation of the Ford inline-sixes and have designed a V12 block that accepts two Ford inline-six heads. Whether or not this will make it into production really depends on demand, but we will defini ely make a few prototypes.
