f you live your life a quarter mile at a time, 2016 was quite the eventful quarter mile. From the initial acceleration to the blaring red brake lights, 2016 has taken (Bowie, Prince, Harambe [a prince in his own right], and many others), but given us so much to be thankful for in this insane scene/hobby/lifestyle that we all can’t seem to quit. Modifying and tuning, all things considered, are the best addictions to have after all. I swear these years go by faster with each passing one, like someone has been building the motor on time, and in 2016, they finally crac ed four digits in power numbers. It seemed like last SEMA had just ended, and the next one was just around the corner, leaving a blur of a 2016 in between for us. That’s why we like Tuning 365. It gives us, as well as you, the chance to sit back and look

at everything that happened in our little world during the past year. If you’re familiar with our yearbook, you’ll know we base our year from SEMA to SEMA (November to October). So, if you’re new to the whole thing: yes, we do know how a calendar works, we just work ours a little different is all! And if you’re looking for SEMA 2016 coverage, you’ll get that in spades next issue, I promise. In the meantime, kick back with a cup of cocoa or nog (it’s about that time) and peruse our curated list of the best builds, hottest events, and some of the greatest ingenuity in any form of engineering circle. The stories in this book range from grocery getters turned showstoppers, to purpose-built cars for tearing up the track or someone’s eardrums. We could probably say this about every issue we put out, but we were absolutely stoked to get this out the door. As a pre-release for SEMA, PASMAG #134 was a culmination of writing, design, and some outstanding work from our contributors to put together something that could rep the brand at the biggest show of the year!
The paintjob on this Golf R32 can only be described with one word: “stellar.” The highlyflecked and root-beer-colored exterior is totally reminiscent of a starry night, but also just the precursor to the rest of Jonathan Leung’s out-of-this-world build. Peeking past the paint gives way to a dialed in stance on Porsche Cup wheels, and the over 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque they have to handle via a CTS turbo kit and C2 Motorsports tune. Pair that with an upgraded European 4MOTION all-wheel drive gear set and a reupholstered leather interior, and everyone can see why this R32 is such a star.

It turns out that the U.S.’s vehicle import laws can even hurt those that are in Japan. When Richard P was almost ready to come home from Navy deployment in the glorious Nippon, he suddenly realized that he couldn’t bring his R32 Skyline GT-R with him and scrambled to find something legitimately JDM to take home. His search led him to an HR30 Skyline that needed some serious love, but it was right for the price and, being L-series equipped in the motor department, had the right amount of rarity. Since then, Rich’s Skyline has become an American citizen and has been rebuilt with only the most authentic parts, inside and out.

After a 2010 season that resulted in just missing the Rookie of the Year award, “Mad” Mike Whiddett retreated back to his home of New Zealand to hone his rotary hooning skills, waiting for the perfect time to come back and take the Formula Drift series by storm. For the 2015 season, Whiddett returned with a Mazda MX-5, named “RADBUL,” of the same year, housing a 1,000-plus horsepower, twin-turbocharged, four-rotor engine. Unfortunately, with some technical difficulties, Whiddett’s 2015 season was limited and not very successful, but with an off eason of fine tuning, Mad Mike’s 2016 was competitive and allowed him to stand atop his first podium.

New Mexico has had a new, picturesque addition to their skyline for quite a while now, thanks to Iram Ochoa and his towering GMC Sierra. This Sierra isn’t just any Sierra either, it’s a Denali – a.k.a. the Cadillac of trucks. The Sierra is lifted up a whole 15 inches on Full Throttle suspension, and rolls on American Force Honor MP8 24x16 wheels at the ground floor. Ochoa’s Sierra is more comparable to a luxury skyscraper in this case, kind of like a Trump Tower. It’s got some kick as well, with a plug-in tuner and custom exhaust bumping up the output. Ochoa continues to terrorize the New Mexico skyline, as well as social media, with his (at time of printing) 77,000 Instagram followers.

BENJI TRAN HOLDS IT DOWN FOR THE 204 PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY BRIAN Benjamin Tran of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, took 2015’s Tuner Battlegrounds Championship trophy and the cover of his very own issue with his 2004 Acura TSX, which makes two stellar builds (Anthony De Guzman’s Supra previously) from the same city, two years in a row. What the hell are they putting in the water in Winnipeg? It turns out to be a solid dose of community. Tran initially bought the TSX in 2008 with the mind that it would be a point A to B car during college that fit his budget and was cheap to drive, but with the help of his friends, he was able to completely ruin it in the best way possible. A Kraftwerks supercharger, a completely stripped and painted car (inside and outside), the Porsche GT3RS paintjob, and a one-o˜ JL Audio subwoofer trunk enclosure are just a few of the things that it takes to be a champ.

Car shows are pretty comparable to fashion shows. You train (tune and modify) to look and perform your best, practice your walk (perfect your stance) and rep the newest, in-style wears (best, high quality parts), kind of like Rick Fontan’s BMW E46 M3 catwalk model. In 2015, Fontan brought home five Best of Show trophies, among other hardware, at every single one of the five shows he’s been to. Fontan credits his fascination with Craig Lieberman’s “Uber M3” as the cause for him to build such a showstopper. The custom metal widebody outside, the full suede interior and candy purple roll cage inside, the “GT-R-style” side-exit exhaust on the right and left sides, and the shave and tuck job paired with the upgraded Vortech supercharger under the hood, are all important components as to how this M3 is so successful.

Brian McCann is one of the pioneers of Stardast-equipped Z-cars in North America, just one of three at the time he acquired the kit. McCann leveraged his connections to modify the kit to fit his aggressive style, and quickly became a JDM mashup of stellar parts, like a custom VIS Racing hood and a Garage Kagatoni diffuser originally meant for the FD RX-7. Of course, this car doesn’t just look the part – it’s functional as well. Names like Brian Crower, CP Pistons, Mishimoto and Precision Turbo all play a part in bolstering the performance of this 350Z to an impressive 650 horsepower and matching torque.

After an accident five years prior to this build, Alex Ching thought he was done working on cars, but his love for the scene was quick to hold him against his word. What started off s a rusty 26-year-old skeleton of a car soon became his pride and joy. Taking the hands-on approach, the work was done by Ching himself, even going as far as to set up a makeshift paint booth from a portable tent and canvas in his own backyard. Today, the 240SX that once looked like a wreck is now a gorgeous example of the platform that makes well in excess of 400 horsepower with it’s original power-plant, the KA24.

Style is completely subjective, which is why there’s so much controversy as to what is “in” and what isn’t. You feel something when you drive your car, and if you build towards that feeling, the form that follows will never go out of style. A prime example of a car that evokes emotion is Bulletproof Automotive’s BMW Z4 GT Continuum. An aspect of the build that most wouldn’t expect is the lost art of coach building. The roof and pillars are gone from the car, the doors have been welded up and shaved smooth – door handles and all – and the fenders were cut out and replaced with much wider aerodynamic Varis offerings. Even the top dash was ripped out and replaced with a handmade fiberglass one. This car is a blend of form, function, JDM, Euro, USDM, style and emotion. It’s kind of perfect.

We caught up with iconic Porsche builder and founder of RWB, Akira Nakai, in the middle of a build in New Zealand to talk to him and get a glimpse inside his creative and rebellious mind. We got to learn a bit about what inspires him, and where he takes his influences from. Nakai says he doesn’t consider himself an artist, but a passionate builder. He also states that perfection is impossible, but the desire to come as close to perfection as possible is part of each project. When asked if any one build in particular stands out to him, he responded, “Every build is memorable. Having the opportunity to live is memorable. I treat every day as a precious moment.” Wise words, Nakai-san.

Bill Brinkworth acquired a 240Z from a friend who didn’t know what to do with it after moving on. Under pressure to do something cool with the car, he looked far and wide on the internet, only to find that the platform had very limited choices when it came to fender flares at the time. Brinkworth took it upon himself to design and create fender flares similar to those found on the Rocket Bunny kit for the FD RX-7. The design was such a hit that requests to manufacture the flares came in from all over. Today, he has sold more than 12 sets of his over-fenders to buyers all around the world via D-Brinkworth, the brand named partially after his son, Dylan, who reportedly was a large driving force behind the decision to do flares on the family’s 3.0L L28-powered 240Z.

For guys like Mark Yuen of Medford, New Jersey, the car-building gene is coded in his DNA. As for us normies, we can just sit back and enjoy the end products of his hard work. Yuen’s most recent baby is a VIP-style Lexus LS460 that is as wide as it is low, and a production on his resume that has been 15 years in the making. Mark’s goal behind this build was to set his LS460 apart from all other VIP cars out in the show scene with a K-Break Hyper Zero Customs body kit, Fizz Autosports spoilers, and custom-molded wide fenders. AirREX air suspension squats the LS460 over Leon Hardiritt Jager wheels and Toyo T1-Sport tires. In the trunk, diamond-stitched leather-lined trunk serves as a bed for a full Audison sound system. At the tender age of 53, Mark is contemplating on retiring from car building altogether, with this LS460 being his magnum opus.

2015 Ford Focus ST
It’s 2015 and Rally Innovations has been challenged with building a Ford Focus for SEMA. They needed something that will not only grab attention, but test themselves from a building and design standpoint. Thankfully, John Peñano’s, co-owner of Rally Innovations, son had a suggestion: to build a car based on a Gundam. To make sure they were being faithful to the mobile suit’s design, Peñano’s team actually went out and bought a 1/100 scale Master Grade model of the Red Frame Astray and built it for reference material. The raised eyebrows are the V-fin, and the painted middle of the front lip is the signature red goatee. The formed metal fenders are the shoulder and knee armor, while the vented hood is the chest ventilation system. The rear hatch spoiler could even be the flight system backpack. Capturing the essence of a high performance mobile suit in a domestic platform is a huge challenge, but Rally Innovations pulled it off li e they were engineers from the Cosmic Era.

There’s more to this Evo X than meets the eye. Initially built as a show car, owner Mark Aquino soon decided that show life was limiting and boring, and that the car wasn’t being used to its full potential. It wasn’t long before Aquino hit the track at Summit Point Raceway to stretch the car’s legs, and realized that his car was made to be driven. With a big Garrett turbo and some tweaks from its original show setup, this Evo was sitting above the 550 horsepower mark with prowess to spare. Aquino and his car shared a journey from the showroom to the track.

Photography by Dewayne Reid They call this Dodge Ram 2500 the mobile party truck, and that’s exactly what it is. Loaded up with five amplifiers, 34 subwoofers, six 15-inch subwoofers, eight 10-inch mid-bass speakers, eight mid-range speakers, and an assortment of 12 tweeters, this truck is enough of a rolling sound system for the biggest of block parties. In total, all of that gadgetry equates to an earth-shaking 33,000 watts true RMS power. Not bad for something that started as a work truck.

Mazda 13B-REW 1.3L rotary engine Phil Sohn is a guy who appreciates a good rotary engine. So much, in fact, that his current car collection contains five rotary-powered machines, three of them RX-7s. This particular FD3S is especially cool, as it blends style and function in equal parts. Because Sohn has a massive collection of parts to swap and interchange, the RX-7 frequently sees new looks, but this iteration is one of the coolest looking thanks to a rare Knightsport Type 7 bumper (the first of its kind in the Unites States), among other hard-to-come-by JDM parts. His cars also see their fair share of track time as well, so it’s most certainly not for show. The Gram Light wheels are a stylish and functional choice, wrapped in Toyo T1-Sport tires to put down all the power from the turbocharged and Frankenstein-built 13B rotary engine.

We’ve never been one to listen to the naysayers, and neither has Brent Khelawan. When a few shops laughed him out the door saying his engine swap wasn’t possible, that only motivated him further. With some help from Rudy Compart of Accelerated Industries, the engine from a donor E55, complete with an Eaton twin-screw supercharger, was dropped into his CLS500 after some custom harness work and a little elbow grease. The installation is so clean it looks almost like it came from factory, and the rest of the car is just as impressive, inside and out.
This truck and trailer combo is a rolling show of its own. The Sunset Bronze Mica and copper color scheme carries through the whole project. The exterior, the underside, the wheels, even the trailer and one of the Honda Groms that it carries all showcase the same paint scheme. They even have matching wheels! The full Memphis Audio M-Class sound system is also painted to match, and goes so far as to include marine speakers on the trailer. Talk about commitment to the theme!

When Brian’s Motorsports, owned by Brian Hayes, became the largest dealer of Rough Country’s suspension lift kits, it only seemed fitting that they put together a vehicle to showcase the prowess of Rough Country’s products. Enter Sgt. Steele. The name was decided on in order to pay respect to military personnel and soldiers everywhere. Looking to build as badass a vehicle as possible, a Jeep Wrangler was a good platform to start with. From there, the Jeep was met with the works. A full interior, big Forgiato wheels, a complete audio system, and a whole lot of suspension work and off- oad equipment from Rough Country transformed this jeep into a fullylit off- oad warrior.

Neil Tjin and his Tjin Edition brand took on a daunting task for SEMA 2015: Build a Hyundai Genesis coupe that would stand out – without the use of a widebody. After being presented with a 3.8L Genesis coupe, the team got to work. Lamborghini Green paint from Axalta, LightWurkz custom headlights, custom front lip, and Rotiform HUR wheels set the car apart from the outside, but that was just the beginning. The interior was also met with custom leather from Alea Leather in a matching color. Notably, this Hyundai is also the world’s first supercharged 3.8L Genesis coupe thanks to Vortech’s V3 supercharger working in tandem with Bisimoto’s kit. Exactly what you would expect from the combined efforts of two tuning legends.

When it came time to build a truck for the 2015 SEMA show, the Molinas of Projekt Cars had a lot of choices. After Alma Molina fell in love with the design of the newer aluminum body Ford trucks, the project was underway. Fiberwerx, an aftermarket innovator based out of California, stepped up to the plate with the first ever Baja-style kit for the new F-150. That theme was pushed even further by SVT Raptors’ Baja front and rear bumpers, as well as a custom bed organizer made to hold two spare 37-inch tires wrapped around some Mamba wheels, a partner of the Projekt Cars team. This truck isn’t just for show, either. Once SEMA was over, it became Molina’s daily driver.

This is no ordinary ambulance, and we certainly wouldn’t mind riding in this (in good health, of course). WIZ Custom Builder, a unique shop school in Japan that gets its students to build projects for Tokyo Auto Salon, put this monster machine together for their 10th showing at TAS. The platform is a 1988 Nissan Caravan, but what you see here has gone through several changes. For starters, there’s an SR20 planted behind the front seats and S14 cross-members. The roof was also chopped 10 inches in true hot-rod style. To pull it all together, a real ambulance theme was achieved with lights, sirens, a medic paintjob, and a custom slammed stretcher. People must be dying to get into this ambulance.

Deep in the rural countryside of Japan sits a nondescript building that is home to Inazuma Worx, one of Japanese car culture’s hidden gems. Inazuma Worx is where Ikeda Masataka builds some of Japan’s cleanest AE86s, something he has been doing since he turned 18. We got a close look at one of his personal street cars, a flawlessly restored Sprinter Trueno with a shaved and tucked engine bay. The car featured a rear end from the S15, custom fit in order to allow negative camber to match the front. Not just for show, the engine was built using forged components, and topped o˜ with a beautiful ITB setup.

Zokusha Zokusha would be a better way to describe what someone might call a Bōsōzoku-style car. The term came about as thanks to the Bōsōzoku’s tendency to modify their cars as they would their bikes - loud, outlandish and extremely in your face. So the term Zokusha simply means “gang car.” or more literally “tribe car.”

Although some people complain about the term’s misuse, you could consider “Bōsōzoku” an overarching description of the lifestyle, the bikes and the cars, and while that wouldn’t be 100 percent accurate, it’s not far off. Bōsōzoku more specifically refers to the bike gangs/clubs that saw a huge upswing in membership during the ‘70s and ‘80s, and practiced a philosophy that can best be described as “f**k society, and f**k the cops.” Though these groups, like the famous Specter and Black Emperor clubs, were often considered part of a feeder system into the big leagues - the Yakuza - the clubs were and still are about the great love for the machinery that helped formed life-long bonds.

Kaido Racer is a term that is not used very much anymore, but it simply means “highway racer” and describes the all-out, over-the-top crazy machines that you’ve no doubt seen videos of on YouTube, with their massive mile-long front splitters, huge fenders and wings and ridiculous exhaust pipes, known as takeyari. You tend to see a lot of people mocking these cars and their builders online, but people fail to understand that these people aren’t taking themselves seriously - it’s not as though the guys in this scene don’t know the cars are way over the top - that’s why they do it!

It’s not every day you get to sit down with a D1 champ and pick his brains with a bunch of questions; some trickier than others, but that’s exactly what Adam Zillin did when Toyo Tires invited him to lunch with Masato Kawabata at the 2016 D1 kicko˜ event in Odaiba. “When I was in junior high school, I used to watch F1 and Group A racing, and that was cool, but when I was 13, I saw my first drifting video and it immediately left a huge impact on me. I couldn’t stop thinking about it after that.” “The most important matter right now is that there is a big decline in young people’s interest in what we do, so I encourage them to make friends with

those who are into motorsport and cars or those that participate with and tune them.” “…the feeling is still there. Pulling o˜ a killer drift is still an awesome feeling, being in battle still gives the same rush and the energy from the spectators is alive and well. We simply want to put on a good show.” Fastest Drift eVeR In April, 2016, Kawabata pulled o˜ off the fastest drift in history thus far. Piloting a Nismo GT-R tuned by GReddy Trust, Kawabata slid into a 189.49 mile per hour (304.96 km/h) drift that smashed the last world record by 54.05 mph (85.99 km/h).

An eight-year mainstay of New York, this fully blacked out GTI garnered itself a fitting nickname from its New York residence: The Batmobile. Santora embraced the nickname with his next moves, adding gold accents that included bat symbols around the car. A wing meant for a Subaru STI, carbon fiber fender flares from ECS Tuning, and a gold set of 18-inch Rotiform 3-piece DSC wheels are just some of the things that set this build apart from other GTIs. The engine gets the turbo treatment courtesy of Garrett’s GTX3071r, and the interior features suede upholstery, Cobra racing seats and harnesses. A perfect setup for Oceanside’s dark knight.

The names "Kei Miura" and "Mercedes" are not often used in the same sentence, but every now and then two forces meet in the middle to form something special. When TRA Kyoto partnered with Sarto Racing to debut a special kit for the CLK55 at the 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon, Roland Gotingco fell in love with the design. The kit is just one of many aspects of this build that make it special. It also includes an impressive Focal sound system, some air management courtesy of Airlift Performance, and killer HRE wheels to tie the look together.

Formula Drift’s hard charger, the one and only Chelsea DeNofa, needed a rebuild for the 2016 season. The goal for DeNofa and his team at Chelsea DeNofa Motorsports was simple: Use what they know works to keep the car lightweight and functional, and avoid unnecessary extras. The results of their work include a handful of aero additions, BC Racing ZR Type coilovers and Swift springs, and a BMW M52 that cranks out an impressive 850 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque mated to a four-speed Andrews A431 transmission. All of these upgrades and more proved their worth early in the season, as DeNofa took home the win from the first round in Long Beach.

The folks at Clarion Builds have built quite a name for themselves after knocking two projects out of the park. The latest build for them is this 1991 Acura NSX, which started as a used and abused Craigslist find begging to be restored. They bought the car sight unseen, and had it delivered via truck to Clarion’s headquarters in California. The first order of business was to swap the 3.0L for the 1997 and up 3.2L engine variant, and boost it with a CT Engineering supercharger. Of course, being a Clarion project, the car is outfitted with an impressive sound system, as well as a Clarion 360-degree camera system. The car is set to be auctioned off or charity, just like the BMW 2002 they had built previously.

Derek Covinton originally planned to keep his S2000 stock as a daily driver, but we all know how that story goes. It wasn’t long after taking ownership of the car that Covington opted for all new internals to stroke the 2.0L F20C out to a 2.4L variant. Jud Lagunas originally bought his car as an a˜ ordable, reliable family car that still had the JDM style he appreciated. After spending time with the car, he couldn’t help but develop a vision of what the car could be if he put the work into it. He couldn’t resist. The D-series engine was replaced with a B-series, the body was repainted, and the mods began - until the unthinkable threw a wrench in Lagunas’ gears. A fuel leak started a major fire that burned the front end of his car. With no money to rebuild, he was crushed. Thankfully for Lagunas, his team partnered with some local names to hold a benefit car show, and soon Goldy was back in action and better than ever before.

Lester Rivera had some experience building Hondas in the past, but none quite as big of a project as his CTR clone. What started as a run-of-the-mill 1997 Civic hatchback quickly became one of the toughest challenges he would face as a builder. For some enthusiasts, a few body panel swaps and the authentic Type R badges would be enough, but “close enough” isn’t Rivera’s style. With some help from S1 Built, a shop based out of Clearwater, Florida, this clone is a flawless recreation, down to the RHD swap, pedal assembly, and interior. A few minimalistic and tasteful mods like a Kevlar front lip set this Civic apart from the rest.

The Lotus Elise is a car built with a very specific purpose: performance and prowess. For guys like Johnny Ngo, the factory performance of the car is never quite enough, and for that we are thankful. On a diet of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (in order to save both time and money), Ngo spent more than eight months in his garage creating a monster, aptly named “PBJ Lotus” after the dietary choices during the build process. Drivetrain, handling and interior were all reworked to get the most out of performance while still remaining a street car, but perhaps the highlight of the build is the custom widebody made by Ngo himself. This widebody was such a hit, that he now offers the kit for purchase for likeminded Lotus Elise owners.

This Miata is a far cry from any Miata we’ve seen in PASMAG before. Jacob Gettins and his team at Pistonhead Productions embarked on a unique project with this one. The process of fitting a 3.9L 4BT Cummins diesel engine into a Miata is a long one, but the team managed to prep everything well enough in order to cover the actual engine transplant in a 48-hour live stream. The project was crowd funded, and raffle ckets to win the car were sold to raise money for their local high school’s shop program.

There are those of us out there who are never content with just the factory offerings under the hood. There comes a time where you start to get really sick of losing power going up an especially steep highway section, or seeing the sneering faces of Gen Coupe owners and their HKS SQV4 blow-offs blowing past you. Soon, 200 horses aren’t enough; the intake and exhaust upgrades aren’t enough. You need more power. This is where Vortech Superchargers came in for our FR-S with their V3 Complete kit. In the kit, we got a V3 supercharger unit, all necessary piping and hardware, a front-mount intercooler, and even a ready-to-go tune courtesy of Ecutek. After about six hours of install at Cyrious Garageworks, our FR-S was tuned to push out an extra 94-ish horses and 60 more lb-ft of torque. No more slow jokes!
