ohnny Ngo of Rancho Cordova, California, is no stranger to unique and interesting vehicle builds. Many years ago he had a custom yellow Toyota Celica GTS, named “Bumble Bee Cali,” (remember when builds used to have names?) which he built himself and took many show awards home with. The Celica was actually featured in PASMAG way back when, and a toy company even made a model of his ride! To up the ante from his Celica, Ngo wanted to build something not only unique and eye-catching, but something that is unlikely to be modified in the manner he chos for a performance-oriented daily driver. To boost the cool factor even more, let’s also mention that almost all of this build was done in his own garage. Ngo started off with a 200 Lotus Elise. Building this car on his own time in between work took him over eight months to complete. He did almost all of the work himself from the one-off widebody o the custom audio system. You may have noticed that the car has been slapped with the name “PBJ Lotus,” and there are a couple reasons for that.

“PBJ Lotus came from the time spent building this car,” Ngo recalls, chucking. “I was limited on time and money, so all I could afford to eat to save on both was peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Also, with the indigo base paint color in certain lighting and accompanied with the gold wheels being a shade closer to peanut butter, the car practically named itself.” As mentioned, the custom widebody was made by Ngo himself. When the sanding and prepping tools were put down and it came time to apply the paint, the car was taken up to Phantasy Kolors in Washington state. There, BASF R-M Candy Teal was applied over an indigo base. Along with the body work, Ngo incorporated a custom-made 72-inch carbon fibe spoiler, GT3 carbon fiber mirro s, carbon fiber doo s, front splitter, rocker panel extensions, and carbon side vents, all courtesy of APR Performance. Yes, it looks incredible, but it’s also functional.

Wanting to get the wheel gap to look just right, but in a way that would allow for a suspension install that would perform, BC Racing 30way adjustable BR coilovers were sourced. From there, Ngo needed to find the right wheel and tir combo to accentuate the beautiful widebody. For those custom wheels he turned to Klassen ID and put on a set of CRS-X concave fi e V-spoke wheels - 18x8 up front with 19x10.5 in the rear. The wheels were then wrapped in Toyo T1 Sport tires in 245/35 R18 and 285/30 R19 sizing. Supporting the Lotus’ wheel and tire setup, a four-piston Street Challenge big brake kit from Rotora with larger 328-mm front rotors

helps slow this high-horsepower daily down. Putting the power to the ground is the responsibility of a Clutch Master FX350 clutch kit, while a Quaife Helical LSD makes sure both wheels are spinning together. Wanting to produce a bit more power from the stock 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE, Ngo opted to change a few things after cracking the engine open. Starting with custom rods and pistons, which bring the compression ratio to 9:1, MWR’s cams and Stage 3 valvetrain were also thrown into the mix. Giving the 2ZZ a crucial boost in performance is the addition of a Garrett GTX3076R turbo as part of the Radium Hard Parts full turbo kit.

PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME

As with any turbocharged application, you should always look to upgrade the fuel system as well, so Ngo upgraded to an AEM E85 320-lph high fl w fuel pump, which pumps to a Radium Engineering fuel rail and 1,000-cc Injector Dynamics fuel injectors. Controlling all the fuel, spark and boost is a DRS Motorsports EFI X2 ECU, tuned by DRS’s very own Kris Valdez. On the dyno, the PBJ Lotus makes 461 horsepower with 322 lb-ft of torque- impressive output for a daily driver.

Of course nothing's been left out, here either. Corbeau takes up the seating area up front with their LE-X sport road seat for the driver and LE standard seat for the passenger. Ngo’s biggest challenges. First, he needed to lay the foundation with a full Dynamat interior treatment. Focal Access 6.5-inch components and a JL Audio 13TW5V2 13-inch subwoofer in a custom carbon fibe enclosure took some extensive modifying to fit in o the dash and between the front two seats. T

he little town of Huntsville, Ontario, has been a little overcast lately. A dark cloud seems to hang over it, and no one seems to know why. Well, the region put their top environmental scientists on it and they have deduced that the cloud is actually soot, and it seems to have come from a roaring diesel engine. There are a few theories about the location of the engine circulating through town, and most finge s point to a man named Jacob Gettins, cackling and swearing like a maniac from his garage, towing a fi st-gen Miata all over with something monstrous jutting out of the engine bay. But a diesel in a little Miata? That’s not possible, right? That’s where you’d be wrong. Gettins and his crew at Pistonhead Productions believed they could achieve it, and they did. The thought of rying to stuff a diesel in o a Miata actually started as a bit of a joke among friends at Importfest 2015. Gettins and two of his friends were sitting around and talking shop. Eventually, as each of them are involved in media, the conversation turned to the best way to get views on YouTube. Someone suggested putting the manliest engine into the girliest (no offence Miata owners) car.

“In my mind, nothing is more manly than a Cummins diesel, and there aren’t many cars girlier than a Mazda Miata,” chuckles Gettins. Leaving the show that day, that conversation stuck with him. Almost immediately, he asked the rest of the Pistonhead team about what’s been done with Miatas before and they all started some serious research. Swaps involving big V8s being put into Miatas happens all the time – there are even businesses, like V8 Roadsters, that are dedicated to tossing an eight-cylinder in your little nimble convertible – but it turns out that no one had really attempted to fit a 3.9-li er 4BT Cummins diesel into one before. Taking the dimensions of the engine bay and the dimensions of the engine, the Pistonhead crew deduced that, with quite a bit of cutting, it could be done.

The next roadblock the team had to face was a financial one They had all the dedication and talent to make the build happen, but cash fl w was an issue. Elsewhere, at the local high school, cash fl w was also an issue in the automotive programs. The shop programs, that Gettins is a product of, were being cut back due to budget constraints. Seeing a way that he could give back to the system that helped him even think this whole crazy project was even achievable, Gettins shot a video and laid out a whole marketing plan to fund the Miata build, as well as give back to the local high school. Through crowdfunding website Indiegogo, he proposed a $10,000 goal to fund the build. As the build progressed to completion, Pistonhead sold raffle ti ets for the car. Once the car was completed,

tracked, and completed, it would be given away to a lucky someone, while the high school shop program would receive all proceeds from ticket sales. That’s definiti ely one way to build a car! The project started gaining traction, mostly thanks to rendering artist Alexandre Blanchet (Sleepy Abbey) who noticed it on Instagram and decided to lend a helping hand.

“I made a really crappy rendering of what I wanted to do and, thankfully, it was picked up by an artist called Sleepy Abbey,” Gettins recalls. “He made these renderings that just went viral. I think I owe almost all the marketing to that guy!” Between the rendering and some good connections, Pistonhead was able to get enough people on board to make the project (affectionately named “Soot Salon”) a reality. In the last 48 hours, the crew realized they were going to raise the $10,000 needed to fund the project. To add a little pressure, the team scheduled an event in the build campaign where they would source all the parts needed, and then complete the build over a weekend – two days. It sounds crazy, but what else isn’t with these guys? After sourcing an engine, which had already been converted to fit an ’0 GMC truck, a suitable Miata was found. Fun fact: this is actually Roadster number two. The originally donated shell had structural components that were completely rusted out, so Gettins reached out to Dave’s Garage, a Miata specialist in Oakville, to see if he could help out. Dave himself loved what Pistonhead was trying to do and donated a Miata from his shop with no questions asked!

Of course, the Cummins 4BT would need to get that power to the ground, so Gettins sourced a Ford F-350 Super Duty transmission to get the job done. Inside the tranny is some clutch magic from Exedy that combines an F-350 pressure plate with a Ford Mustang Stage 2 clutch plate. After getting the engine back with a full ARP bolt rebuild from Northern Upfit ers, a shop with a pedigree in tractor pull engines, it was time to put it all together. “It was funny to get that whole package and realize that it was a Cummins engine out of a generator, with a Mustang and F-350 clutch, and a Super Duty transmission,” Gettins muses. “That drivetrain is such a Frankenstein. The rear differential is actually out of a Lincoln Mark 8!” With a turbo from a previous project and everything in order, 15 guys showed up at the garage and put the whole thing together in just two days. Gettins says there were hiccups here and there, but they were overcome easily enough. V8 Roadsters actually donated their engine cradle and diff cradle o make the job easier. Unfortunately, they couldn’t start the car just yet, so the brave few who hung in there to build this monstrosity couldn’t actually hear it fire up. Gettins, h wever, made sure no one was left out when they finally turned the ey. “Its fi st start was at its fi st 84

event,” he explains. “We had a nice big crowd around us, so we bit the bullet and used a lot of American data, and I streamed in the startup to a bunch of the guys who were part of the project so they could at least be there in some way.” Since completion, the Miata has been toured around to quite a few drift events, but the highlight of its life so far was its track debut at Gridlife Atlanta. After a rigorous double tech inspection, gridded up against some of the drift world’s best, and pushing an estimated 300 horses and 600 lbft of torque with about 30 pounds of boost, the Soot Salon got sideways for the fi st time in the horseshoe corner of the Formula Drift circuit of Road Atlanta. There are just a few more stops for this little monster before it’s given to its new owner, which will be determined in early November. “We’ve had a great response with the tickets and we’re hoping to

donate a big check to the school at the end of it,” smiles Gettins. “If all goes well, maybe this is something we do again next year. I know my fiancé doesn’t want o hear that!” After putting hundreds of hours and over a year of his life into that car, Gettins says that it’ll be pretty bittersweet to give it away to the new owner. By choosing a raffle process in ead of an auction though, chances are that the diesel-powered Miata will go to someone who will beat the snot out of I on the track, which is exactly what it was built for. “I’m really looking forward to meeting whoever gets to run that car next,” Gettins says, hopefully. “It’ll be a bittersweet burnout when I get rid of it, but I’m going to mount some extra tires just to melt them off be ore I let it go.” Just one more soot cloud before the Miata travels to another town to terrorize the locals.

T

here’s a magical moment when you fi st get into your new FR-S or BRZ for the fi st time, where you’re convinced you’re behind the wheel of the pinnacle of simple sportscar engineering. The car is light, nimble, and above all, a blast to drive. “Never mind what the haters have to say about a sportscar with only 200 horsepower,” you say to yourself, grinning away. And for quite a few of you Toyobaru twin owners out there, you’ll remain content with that for quite some time, as you laugh your way down twisty lanes. However, there are plenty among us who will not be satisfied wit factory performance under the hood. There comes a time where you start to get really sick of losing power going up an especially steep highway section, or seeing the sneering faces of Gen Coupe owners and their HKS SQV4 blow-offs blowing past you. Soon, 200 horses aren’t enough; the intake and exhaust upgrades aren’t enough. You need more power.

The next issue is finding xactly how you want to apply extra power. Forced induction is the easiest way to go about it, and there are quite a few kits that require little to no modification o the car, as well as an easy install. Power numbers are also a huge thing to consider. Is the time needed to install, plus the cost associated worth the amount of power you’ll get out of the kit? The answer to those questions for me was Vortech’s V3 supercharger kit. The kit offers a fairly turn-key power solution that has been proven to be reliable and true to advertised power specs. After tossing it into the engine bay, the Vortech centrifugal supercharger will make 294 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque at nine PSI. The kit requires very little modification (washer fluid res voir tank relocation, hood prop relocation, and a few bits of cutting plastic), requires no fueling upgrades, is CARB legal, and includes an intercooler, all charge piping and hosing, as well as a custom Vortech tune for 91-octane fuel through use of EcuTek’s re-flash programming Vortech’s supercharger kit is a centrifugal setup, which is like a blower with turbo characteristics. The supercharger itself is gear-driven by the drive belt of the car, which then causes the impeller wheel inside the compressor housing to spin. The resulting high-pressure, low-speed air is pushed into the engine to give it more to work with, giving you more power. The kit actually comes with a Bosch diverter and will make turbo-like blow-off noises, so don’t be too surprised if people start asking if your car is turbocharged. When it came time to install the kit, I seriously considered doing it myself. Vortech says it should take about four to six hours for two guys to do with some fairly basic tools. Bribe a buddy of mine to spend his Saturday in the garage with some beers and come out at the end of the day with a faster FR-S? Sounds like a solid plan to me. However, my garage isn’t exactly neat and tidy and I’ve never actually installed a supercharger before, so I left it to the much more capable hands of Pat Cyr, 86 aficionado and ormula Drift Canada series professional drift driver. I can’t stress enough how not boosted my car would be if not for Pat’s help. People, if you have any doubts, please seek professional help. You will be so much happier. The hourly rate you pay will be worth so much more than broken boost dreams.

THE INSTALL First things fi st, we put my FR-S up on a lift at Cyrious Garageworks HQ. We had to move a couple Levins out of the way in order to get my car in, and when we parked it, it was next to Cyr’s 2JZ drift car, so it just felt right, you know? We laid out all of the components on the workbench, printed out the instructions, removed the front bumper (the bumper sag is real) and got down to business.

You’ll need to remove the OE air box or aftermarket intake. When you remove the OE air box, make sure you hang onto the rubber cushion mounts for a later step. If you have an aftermarket intake (like I did) and have lost your mounts (like I did), you’ll have to visit the classifieds section or cal up the parts department for some new ones. Luckily, since a few FR-S intakes have come off in Cy ’s garage, he had some lying around and he was nice enough to donate them to the cause. Next, remove the little plastic covers over the A/C and alternator wheels, then de-tension the drive belt with a long-handled, close-ended wrench and remove the belt. Remove the long and short bolt on the alternator to fli it up and allow the bracket boss to

be ground down in order to install the alternator tilt bracket, then bolt it all back in. Next, you’ll want to remove a smooth idler pulley and a grooved idler pulley, as well as replace the smooth idler above the crank damper pulley with the supplied steel idler, using the supplied hardware to avoid clearance issues. Reinstall the idlers you previously removed with new hardware as well. Gather all the bracing brackets and long, cylindrical spacers. You’ll need to install bracing on the A/C mount bolts and spacers on the denoted idler pulleys. Inspect the supercharger assembly plate and make sure you’ve got a supercharger on there (duh), an oil drain hose, a smooth idler wheel, and a loose, but captured, fastener. Using the guide, route the Vortech drive belt over and around all the wheel as shown, leaving enough slack for the wheels on the supercharger assembly. Install the mount bracket assembly and route the belt over the idler and compressor wheels, leaving the alternator wheel out. Now, does it seem next to impossible to get that belt over the alternator wheel? Good. That means you did it right. Using that trusty wrench from before, get someone (or two people) to hold the belt de-tensioned while you claw that belt over the alternator wheel. Godspeed and good luck.

To finish up, rem ve the two cam cover screws nearest to the mounting bracket and install the steel mounting plate stiffener. On the driver side of the bay, install the air box support bracket, and on the passenger side, relocate the hood prop. Modify the A/C wheel cover to fit wit the newly mounted supercharger, then reinstall both the A/C and alternator covers. Next comes the intercooler. Normally, you’d remove and relocate a bunch of stuff up front but I planned ahead and made the job easier (or so I thought) by installing a Street Faction bash bar. Turns out the factory front bar is used to mount the intercooler through use of some brackets included in the kit. With those mounting locations gone, I was out of luck. Here is scenario number two where Mr. Cyr saved my ass. Using some drift magic and ingenuity, he fabricated some brackets to be welded to the

bash bar and drilled into the intercooler. When it was all said and done, it looked amazing! I think this makes my kit just a little bit more legit, don’t you think? You’ll then need to remove the windshield washer reservoir and yank the neck out. Chop the excess on the neck to just below the bulge that pops it into place in the original washer tank, and then attach the supplied hose on the end and pop it into the new, supplied washer tank after attaching all the brackets. Refill th tank and mount it up to its new home. Placing the charge piping is easy enough and fairly self-explanatory. Just make sure to look for the pipes that have little flanges o them. They need to be mounted properly to their bracket supports to eliminate any play in the system when your car is hitting bumps and other fun stuff that causes m vement. This system is very tight within the bay and your belt could rub on some pipes, causing it to wear out prematurely if you’re not careful about making sure everything is secure. A few bits of splicing now. The little Bosch diverter, which supplies all the “psssht” sounds, fi s onto the one-inch nipple of “discharge pipe A.” Splice in the brass branch tee two inches from where the brake booster meets the manifold, then run a hose between the diverter and the branch tee. Splice number two is the breather hose check valve into the (you guessed

it) breather hose located on the valve cover. While you’re there, swap out the OE MAP sensor for the Vortech offering. Here is where those valuable rubber cushion mounts come into play. Plug them into the new air box’s mounting tabs and position the rubber coupler and loosened clamp onto the supercharger inlet. Make some tricky maneuvers to install the rest of the air box, as it’s a tight fit, and line up the fi er opening with the OE intake duct in the front bumper. Finally, run the supplied hose from the breather union to the 90-degree fitting on the air b x. Make sure to avoid sharp edges. You don’t want to puncture anything before you even start! Make sure everything is nice and torqued, then bust out the laptop. The prospect of reflashing our ECU with a tune can seem a little intimidating, but from personal experience I can tell you that EcuTek makes it really easy. Just plug in everything as you’re told to your laptop, then just hit that “Next” or “Accept” button like you’re installing software. You’ll be given prompts to shut off and restart our car, then you’ll get a notice on your screen that the tune has taken, and you’re done! Your V3 supercharger unit will come preoiled, so you can start your car right up. Listen for irregular idle, or excessive noise from the supercharger. You should hear some turbine and belt noise, but nothing whirring or harsh.

With the Vortech kit on my FR-S, it feels like a completely different car, and I know it sounds a little cheesy, but I can’t imagine going back to naturally-aspirated now. The power delivery from the supercharger is nice and linear, almost to the point that it feels like we dropped a six-cylinder in there, and the noises that the kit makes are just addictive. This is a modification that I recommend o anyone (with the proper experience, tools, and driver mod of course) if you’re feeling like your car just isn’t delivering the same kick as it used to. A huge thanks goes out to Vortech, Cyrious Garageworks, and EcuTek for all their help on this project. You guys have made me a boosted guy for life.

THE DIFFERENCE OIL MAKES BY ADAM GORDON

Y

ou don’t need to be an engineer or a mechanic to understand that an engine needs oil, but how much can you tell someone about the properties of oil and their effect on an engine’s performance? Although oil is one of the most basic fundamentals of running an engine, a surprisingly small amount of enthusiasts fully understand what it’s made of or how it works – they simply check the manufacturer’s recommendation and buy an oil of their choice with the appropriate rating. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s always good to understand what you’re getting into, especially if you plan on boosting your car’s performance to levels far beyond the factory spec, where a different oil can make a world of difference in performance. We had a long talk with Gork Ma of Speclube to get some expert knowledge and know-how on the subject of oil and its effect on engine performance. “The most important thing of what defines an oil is actually base s ock – the actual oil itself,” says Ma. “Depending on the quality of the base stock, you can then add certain types of additives to help enhance certain properties.” He goes on to explain mineral oils and their problems: “Mineral oils are typically grouped 92

as group I, group II, maybe even group II+, and that’s the oil that you suck out of the ground, you refine it and t y to get it to a similar viscosity. The problem with mineral oil is that they don’t heat very well and they break down very easily, which is why they turn to sludge. The other thing, too, is the bonds between the molecules aren’t very strong, so they shear very easily. If you think about the inside of an engine, there are a lot of shearing forces because you have pistons moving around, cranks spinning around bearings, and that’s physically trying to rip the oil apart.” The susceptibility to shearing, as well as the low resistance to heat and pressure are the driving forces (no pun intended) behind the shift to synthetic oils as time went on and scientific ad ances were made. Ma continues on to explain the benefi s of a synthetic oil. “Because synthetic oils are manmade, the molecules themselves are all uniform – they’re all the same size. The bonds between these molecules are so much stronger, so they can take heat, they can take pressure, they’re resistant to shearing, all because they’re more uniform and there’s less friction,” he explains. “That’s why typically

It’s just better!” Synthetic oils took a giant leap forward during World War II thanks to the German invention of ester oils. Originally developed strictly for jet engines, it’s apparent that heat and pressure tolerances would be incredibly high, but that’s not the only reason that ester oils made their way to automotive use. “The other good thing about esters is that they’re polar. There’s a positive and a negative on the

molecule. If you think bout it, engines (aside from all-aluminum engines) have some kind of metal in there. Because the ester’s molecules are polar, they’ll actually stick onto the metal,” explains Ma. “There’s always going to be an oil film c vering all the metal components. This is especially important with camshafts because the oil pressure doesn’t start to build up into the camshaft area until the car has been running for a little bit.
