We’re not saying they still aren’t (because really, they were doing widebodies, wide wheels and air suspension before anyone else), but they don’t hold the same traction as they used to. Once again, it’s the innovations and inventions from Japan that are leading the way on this next trend. Refined air suspension systems and more widely available widebodies for a wide

array of platforms have paved the way for more enthusiasts to be more easily included in this lifestyle – and we absolutely love that. In this issue, we dedicate all our paper to the theme of style in its present state and some of the people pushing it forward. On two opposite ends of the widebody spectrum, we speak with RWB’s Akira Nakai while he was building twin RWB 964s in New Zealand, and Bill Brinkworth, as he and his brother produce Datsun S30 flares in their garage. t’s a peaceful morning. Birds are chirping and the sun has risen. You stretch lazily and turn your head to look over at your clock on the bed-side table. Oh no… You’ve slept in. You set the alarm on your phone for P.M. instead of A.M. and you are way behind schedule for the meet this afternoon. You remember that you stupidly parked your car under the tree in your front yard last night and now it’s covered in dirt, bird poop and pine needles. Awesome… Now you’re behind and your car is dirtier than

you left it last night. Well, that’s the scenario I gave myself anyway. Meguiar’s has resurrected the Mirror Bright name to head up their new line of car care products for its 115th anniversary. In 1901, Frank Maguiar Jr. introduced Mirror Bright to perfect the finishes on furniture and that passion carries on today with a special line of products for automotive finishes. Now, I’ve been assured that these products are foolproof, and I was able to use them somehow, so I think we’re all safe. Let’s see what they’re all about, shall we?

POLISHING WAX The Polishing Wax is another hybrid product, acting as a wax and a polish, which works in tandem with the Automobile Shampoo as a second step. It comes in a much smaller bottle that is modelled after Frank Meguiar’s furniture polishes. The smaller size is not a con whatsoever, as a little goes a long way with this product. Make sure your car is cool (temperaturewise) and pick a panel (I usually start with the hood and work my way around) and add a small amount all over the surface. I chose to hand-buff the liquid to a haze with a microfiber cloth. Once you’ve worked all the way around and returned to the hood, the polish/wax should have cured enough to be wiped off. I did this with a Supreme Shine microfiber towel that Meguiar’s was kind enough to include. The finish was fantastic. The polish brought the metallic fleck in my factory paint right out. I don’t use the word “glimmer” very often, but it definitely glimmered.

I’m going to start out strong with the bottle that most looks like a milk bottle and what I’d call my favorite product from the line: Automobile Shampoo. It’s my favorite for two reasons: it uses a carnauba milk formulation, which means that it waxes as it cleans, and it smells like fruit punch. Seriously, crack this open and tell me this doesn’t remind you of childhood. To start, I gave my car a good rinse with the hose to make sure I wasn’t about to scrape some pine needles all over my paintwork. Then, using the very scientific formula of one “glug” per gallon, I filled up my trusty bucket and plunged my sponge in. I gave the car a once-over with the sponge, making sure to scrub at the bird droppings and persistent dirt patches. Once I was happy, I dumped about half of the bucket on the roof of the car and worked my way down and all the way around, working my sponge in small circular motions. When all was said and rinsed off, I almost called it quits there. The “wax as you wash” isn’t just a selling point printed on the bottle. Once I towel dried it, it looked great!

WHEEL CLEANER I’m a bit ashamed to say this, but I let my WORK CR2Ps get a little dirty. I just wanted to apologize to you all. It won’t happen again, especially after I discovered how easy it was to get them clean with the Mirror Bright Wheel Cleaner. Give the spray bottle a good shake and spray a liberal amount of solution on the wheel. I chose to add a little more to the top of the wheel, to let the cleaner scrub its way down. Now just chill out for a couple minutes. Have a drink or something. Sit there and stare at it. You do you. Once a couple minutes have passed, grab a microfiber cloth, toothbrush, or whatever you usually use to detail your wheels and scrub away.

Finish off with a rinse from the hose and then a quick towel dry. Now, stand back and witness how clean your wheels are. I bet they’re pretty damn clean. This product works on wheels that are aluminum, chrome, powder-coated, anodized, painted and even reps! Amazing. All in all, this took me about an hour to achieve. An hour to completely clean my car in my driveway with three products, a bucket, a sponge and some cloths. Best of all, it reminded me just how therapeutic it is to clean my car by hand. Now we can all be show ready in record time.

T

he founder of RAUH-Welt Begriff (RWB), Nakai-san has revolutionized Porsche tuning with polarizing authority and audacity. He takes one of the world’s most beautiful and celebrated automotive icons and cranks the volume to 11, creating a visual impact like no other. The high-priced machinery that is put into Nakai-san’s stead arrive as collector’s items, but leave as numbered and named works of art. To own an RWB Porsche is akin to owning a priceless painting, only each RWB Porsche is as devoted to driving performance and pleasure as it is in its menacing looks. He is most comfortable in the shop, almost dancing around the highly prized and valuable machinery that he is about to radically alter. He swings power cords in the air, skips around the car and drops tools and cigarette lighters like a mob hit man after a kill shot. But he does it in his own little world, as though he is the only one in the room. In Nakai-san’s world, the only things in the shop are the tools he wields and the car he creates. However, in reality, the shop is a theater, and Nakai-san is the focus of attention. He is a hard man to find. From his humble beginnings in his shop in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, he now jet sets around the world crafting his trade. We finally caught up with him in Palmerston North, New Zealand, where he was undertaking a twin build of two Porsche 964s. Nearly having to restrain the restless and enigmatic character, we sat down with Nakai-san to talk about where he came from, what drives him and what makes an RWB special.

First off, how did you become fascinated with Porsches? First of all, I like Porsches, especially the classic Porsches. I first drove a Porsche 20 years ago and thought, ‘Yeah, I would like to tune these!’ Twenty years ago, they were expensive, but they were fast. That is where it all started. That was pretty much it.

Would you call yourself an artist? I don’t consider myself to be an artist. Building is my passion; all the money I earn from my work gets turned straight back into cars. I put as much inspiration into each build as I possibly can. Every car is someone’s treasure, so it is important that it looks fantastic and drives just as well.

What is “RAUH-Welt” and “Zweite Entwicklung” Rauh-Welt comes from German. It basically means Rough World. Zweite Entwicklung basically means “Second Evolution,” which is what I feel these Porsches undergo.

Are the cars you design inspired from motorsports, style or a mixture of both? Style. I get inspiration from the base car; I envision it in my head and from there comes the inspiration for the build. I don't build as if it’s just my job, but rather I build it as if I owned it and was driving it for myself. That is how I build.

You are very focused on your work. What goes through your mind when you stare at the car you are working on? I think about what has to happen, what kind of car it is, what the history of the car is and things like that. Initially, I look at what needs to be done, sometimes things need to be fixed before I can start work on them, too. Once I feel I understand the car, then I can begin working on it -- only when that happens though. What goes into naming each car, and what does that mean to you? I don’t get to name the car every time now, but when I do though, I take inspiration from many places in order to come up with the name. At the time, the location, good drinks or even something as simple as a song that played on the radio while I was working; the inspiration comes from many various places.

Where do you get your inspiration? Actually, it just suddenly comes, you know? It comes while I’m working, while I’m drinking, or listening to the radio in my workshop. It just suddenly comes to me.

AKIRANAKAI Do you have a process or routine you follow when building a new car? There is no process that I follow, I go about it how I feel is best at the time. That is Rough World. What does each car mean to you? Is it hard to create something and walk away from it? Sometimes it is, but even if I feel sad, I always tell myself I will be back. That way, it isn’t too much of an issue. Is there one build that stands out in your mind from your time of building RWB Porsches? Every build is memorable. Having the opportunity to live is memorable. I treat everyday as a precious moment. Is every car fairly straightforward or does each offer their own challenge? No two cars are the same; every car presents different challenges and things that have to be overcome. Never have I had two builds or cars that were the same in characteristic. In your opinion, what would be your perfect or dream project? This is a question I get asked a lot. Because I want to drive my favourite cars, for me it’s what I am into at the time. So, at the moment for me it’s Porsches. There is no such thing as perfection. We always strive to come as close as we possibly can to perfection, but this is something that nobody can attain. We produce cars that are close to perfection, but none are perfect. Don’t you agree?

What should a potential RWB customer expect when employing your services? Every Porsche is created specifically for that owner. The style, for example, like smooth fenders, or bolt-on fenders is chosen by them. The colour is something we work together on. They give me a range of colours they are happy with and then I make a final decision on the body style and colour based on their personality. Every car is completed and then given a special name. The cars are also given numbered plates to show their authenticity, every one has a serial number, and the RAUH-Welt logo printed onto it. Also, no two cars are the same, as every kit I fit goes on slightly different. Some kits twist a little and I have to adjust each one individually to make it sit right. It can’t be done as a production line style of building.

How long does it take to build one car? Well it depends, as currently the overseas market is so popular. Firstly, we receive the order and then manufacture the kit after payment is received. Each county is different, so everything is packaged up and sent on to where the buyer is. Once they receive the kit, they paint it along with the car. We decide on a schedule and then I go and build the car. It usually takes about three days, sometimes four days. If I am under the gun, I can build the car in two days. Something along those lines. Why do you choose Work Wheels for all your cars? Work Wheels have created special offsets just for me. I know the owner very well and I know they are strict with their testing and quality, so this is why I choose to use Work Wheels.

Does the constant travel take a toll on you? What drives you to keep doing this? It’s my passion; I tend not to think about how hard it is. When it is your passion, you do what you need to do. If you could not build RWB cars, what career would you choose? I have never thought about that.

NO TWO CARS ARE THE SAME; EVERY CAR PRESENTS DIFFERENT CHALLENGES AND THINGS THAT HAVE TO BE OVERCOME.

RWB is well known for running crazy offsets, what is the biggest offset you have used? Yeah. So far, the biggest I have ever run is -100. What advice do you have for amateurs who try to alter their own cars? Don’t be swayed by what others say! Do what you want to do and stick with it.

AKIRANAKAI How do you respond to those who think you destroy these cars with what you do? Everyone is different; some like what I do and some don’t like what I do. We will never all feel the same way about something. That is the beauty of life. Everyone has their own opinions. If 100 people or 200 people all say my work is good, then it’s good. Even if only one out of those 200 were to say good things about my work, then that’s also good. Whether people’s opinions are good or bad, I welcome both; feedback is a good thing. Even if people say they don’t like my work, it still makes me very happy. The fact that my work caught their attention, I am grateful for.

What happens to RWB when you stop building? Will it continue or is that the end of RWB? When I am too old to build, then RWB will continue, however, there will not be any more cars built. I won’t pass on the legacy to anyone to build them. I have built all the cars myself so far, and as it is my own passion, I would prefer that I build the first and last cars. RWB will continue with the RWB family though.

Are 911s your only focus, or will you work on other cars? Right now, I am not interested in working on any other cars. Although, in saying that, I might wake up and feel inspired to build something for another model so you never know.

Please describe your New Zealand experience. New Zealand has been a place that I can really relax while working. Being here has made me very, very happy.

Where do you see RWB in 10 years? What does the future hold for you? I never think about the future. I haven’t given it any thought. I live in the here and now. I concentrate on what I am doing now and enjoy it as much as possible. At this stage, there will not be any new projects as the 997 shape and other modern Porsche bodies don’t inspire me. I won’t create a kit for a car just to make money, that isn’t what it is about.

What do you want customers to get out of owning a RWB Porsche? The bottom line is that I want people to cherish their car and enjoy driving it, to look after it and actually use it, not just ‘collect’ them. There are people around who admire the cars,

and some who don’t like them, but the most important thing is how the car makes you feel. I want the car to make you happy when you drive it. I want many people to drive them. Tuned street cars are actually not a large amount of the whole number of cars present around the world. We all want to drive nicely-tuned cool cars, right?

“W

hen you need something done right, you do it yourself.” How many times have we all heard that piece of advice? Well, for Bill Brinkworth, he didn’t really have another option. With none of the aftermarket Datsun 240Z (S30) widebody options turning his crank and no Rocket Bunny kit available at the time, he took his experiences in car customizing and professional scale modelling, poured them in a mold and out came D-Brinkworth’s fender flares. The business itself is fairly new, but the two-brother operation situated out of Bill’s garage is piquing a lot of interest. We decided to see what it’s like being the little guy in the huge widebody world and sat down with Bill for a quick chat about the business and his process.

Micky Slinger: Start out with telling me about your involvement in the automotive scene. How long have you been in it and what kind of projects have you been a part of? Bill Brinkworth: As far as how long I’ve been in it, I’d have to say it’s about 10 or 12 years of doing custom car work and having my own business. As far as vehicles that I’ve done, I’ve done all sorts, from muscle cars to import cars, even bikes. It was more cosmetic, I would say. I did audio and body and air suspension, but it’s mostly custom work, like custom paint and airbrushing. I’ve done full restorations, too.

What’s your background in manufacturing then? Well, I learned a lot doing scale modelling with my dad. There are different aspects that I was able to use in the car industry, like painting and shaping. As far as molding and manufacturing, we also did rubber molds and hard molds for fiberglass and resin casting. The scale modelling really did help me get experience for the things I do with cars.

Tell me a little more about back when you were doing scale models? When I was in school, I was working on architectural models, so I would model buildings and future developments. I would make a replica of what it was going to look like and then they would make molds of it and produce it on a mass production scale. That slowly turned into doing scale car models. We did one Rolls Royce car model for a customer, and when the Indy first came to Vancouver, Paul Newman and Carl Haas – the team owners of Newman/ Haas - saw it and contacted us to see if we could do their race models. So, we went to one of the races, got as many photos as we could, and they sent us technical drawings. We made a few models for a couple race teams, and when they saw those, they were hooked. Every year we’d do the same thing. They would send us the drawings, we would go down to the various races, take photos of stuff we couldn’t get from the drawings, and we would produce them for that year. They would order a bunch to give to the sponsors and drivers and stuff. I also did some trophy stuff. In 2000, I did the trophy for the Molson Indy for second and third place. I also did the Greg Moore Rookie Award, as well as a sculpture. Tell me about how D-Brinkworth fender flares got started. When I first acquired the Datsun, I did my research all over the net trying to find all of the different things you could do with them. I saw that they pretty much only had a few different sets of flares.

Then I saw that Rocket Bunny had done a really cool set of flares for the FD RX-7. I really liked the style of it. Actually, my son was the one who looked at it and said I should get Rocket Bunny flares for my car, but at that time, they didn’t have a kit for the Datsun. So, I decided I’d make my own flares that followed the bodylines of the car. Originally, we were just going to be doing it for my own car, but then I got contacted by the owner of Japan Garage, who I was getting my racing wheels from. He said, “Hey, you should manufacture them! I’ve sent some pictures around and everybody just loves them.” I had never really gotten into that side of manufacturing with fiberglass on a mass scale. He’s said if I did it, he could probably find some buyers, so I decided I’d try it. I had to make a mold of it anyway. My brother saw what I was doing and he was interested and he said he’d give me a hand, so we took on the project together and then it went from there. Once we started advertising it, it just went crazy. People all over the world were wanting these flares. In the name, what does the “D” in “D-Brinkworth” stand for? That is my son’s initial of his first name. His name is Dylan. It was kind of his idea at the start when he said I should put flares on the car. Your focus is primarily the S30 platform. Have you always been fascinated with those cars? What made you want to pick one up? I have always liked them, they’re such cool cars. My friend had this 240Z when he was 16. We’d hang out and drive around all over the place. It was a fun, fast little car. Three or fours years later, my friend bought a truck and the car got parked against my friend’s fence. I asked him, “Hey, what are you doing with that 240?” And he’s like, “One day, I’d like you to fix it up.” But neither of us really had the time to do it.

Salvador. That guy is actually a professional race driver and the car is beautiful. It’s a 280Z and apparently very well known in the Latin American racing scene. There’s another set that’s shipping out in another week or so and they’ll be the first ones to go to Japan!

He parked it and it sat there and sat there. Every time I’d drive past it, I thought of it just sinking into the ground, rotting away. Every time I saw him I was like, “What are you going to do with that car?” He would just go, “I know, I know. I should do something about that.” Then one day, out of the blue, he calls and says, “Hey, if you want that 240, my parents are just sick and tired of seeing it there. Pick it up. I know it’s going to have a good home. You’ll do something cool with it.” Then the pressure was on to do something because now he’s given it to me and I wanted to make him feel good about where it had gone. It hasn’t just sat at my house. I’ve done a little bit here and there. It’s sort of like a 15-year project. In the end, I think it turned out as a pretty decent product. Do you have plans to make flares for any other cars, or are you going to stick to the Datsun side? It’s hard to say. I’ve had so many people actually contact me and say, “Hey, I have this

car and I want a widebody kit on it. How much would it cost for you to make one?” It’s hard to pick something that I know would be a decent seller. I want to get my money back in all respects, right? It’s really expensive because of the time involved developing and molding. Right now, I’m still just barely covering my development time with the amount of flares that I’ve sold. I’m also paying my brother for the time he is taking off work to actually get these things ready. I think that it’s a really cool thing and it’s something I love to do. If money was no object, I’d be open to do any type of project for anybody, for sure. How many sets of flares have you made to date? Have they gone anywhere interesting? To date, I would say we’ve made about 12 sets. With every customer that I’ve sent the flares out to, I’ve tried to keep a personal relationship with them in some way. The farthest ones that I’ve had sent were to El

How long does it take is to make a full set? What’s the process like? I would say probably about two days, three days max. My brother does most of the actual manufacturing side of it. Once he’s waxed the mold and then shot the resin in there, that has to sit and dry for a bit. After that, we shoot the gel coating and that has to set for a few hours. After that, he starts layering up the fiberglass and resin, which usually takes another few hours to set. The de-molding and trimming usually takes about an hour or so. What sets your fenders apart from other aftermarket offerings? I’ve worked with body kits for many years, and you know a quality kit from a crappy kit. In most cases, the crappy ones are the ones that are produced too fast and pulled from the mold too soon. They’re soft and distorted and have been possibly sitting with other kits, making them uneven or putting a twist in them. The best thing is to leave the piece in the mold as long as you can to properly cure and get solid. Once you take it out, in most cases, it should pretty much fit up against the car. Our fitment is very, very close.

orty-three years later and looking better than ever. Brinkworth’s personal 1973 240Z has been restored where needed, left where appropriate and updated in great taste. Best of all, she’s a rescue. Brinkworth’s high school friend, Jason Nakano, used to drive around in the car over 20 years ago when they were about 16

years old. A few years later and that whole “adult” thing happened and priorities shifted. The 240Z was a joyriding car and there’s just wasn’t that much time for joyriding anymore, so she sat, rotting away in Nakano’s yard. After dropping more than enough hints that he would gladly take it off his friend’s hands, Brinkworth finally received the call

that the car could totally be his, with one condition: that he make it something special. We think he did a pretty good job. The Datsun was blasted down to the metal and completely restored. There’s absolutely no rust or rotting happening there anymore. The engine was bored out from a 2.8L to a 3.0L and mated with a Kameari header for that signature inline-six wail, which is made even more throaty by the addition of a 3.5-inch exhaust system. The largest difference to the car has to be the exterior, with the bodyline-chasing D-Brinkworth fender flares being the largest contrasting feature. Everything is painted in a Porsche shade of Orange, with the satin black hood being the exception. Some Atara Racing Pisang wheels were sourced in 15x10.5 sizing to fill that new fender gap. Yokohama AVIDs are stretched up front, while some snug-fitting Nitto NT555s take up the rear. While some may get mad about someone chopping up an old Z and giving it some wider hips, we feel like this case is justified in everyone’s eyes. This car was either going to be left to die or become something special under the care of Brinkworth. We think that it’s living the happiest years of it’s life now.

ialing in the stance on your car is a lot like tailoring a suit. You want to look good, so you pick something expensive. But just a nice suit isn’t enough – you have to accessorize to pull off the new look; add on and accent to make your suit look how you want it to. ROTIFORM CCV THREE-PIECE FORGED WHEELS Custom forged wheels are a must these days if you’re looking to achieve a certain look that will perfectly match your car. Since the practice has become more accessible in recent years, there’s an outpouring of companies that offer wheels forged and constructed to the customer’s needs, but Rotiform stands out above the others for offering a myriad of designs in conjunction with what could be the most custom options on the market right now. While the vast selection can be intimidating to some, Rich had no problem deciding which Rotiforms he’d like sitting on his ride. He settled on the throwback-styled CCV, which takes heavy influence from wheels of the ‘80s equipped with turbo fans. After speaking with Brian Henderson, the owner of Rotiform, over the phone, the two decided on three-piece construction that measures in at 19x9.5 with a +22 offset in the “matte anthracite” finish with gold hardware, on all corners. The wheels also have staggered lips, with two-inches in the front and three in the back.

WHY NOT GO FOR A STAGGERED FITMENT? Since the G37 is an “x” model, that means it’s equipped with Nissan’s ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system. Owners of cars equipped with AWD have to be very careful when they’re choosing aftermarket wheel options and stick to a square setup because of the complex system. With the AWD system splitting torque between the front and the rear wheels, a variant in the rolling diameter of the wheels can cause some pretty expensive problems to the transmission and AWD system. Most AWD vehicles come from the factory on a square wheel setup. Some high performance models do run staggered setups as OEM equipment, but use tires that keep the same rolling diameter, or keep it as close as possible as to not cause an issue. The tolerance in rolling diameter is low (usually about five percent, but less than one percent on the G37x), but if you really want to run staggered, make sure you do your research beforehand.

TOYO PROXES T1 SPORT TIRES The Infiniti G37x S is a perfect blend of luxury and performance, so why not stick with that formula for the tires? Toyo’s Proxes T1 Sport tires takes the performance benefits from the Proxes line and infuses that with some of Toyo’s luxury offerings. Wider outer blocks and center ribs improve stability, handling and braking, which we ruined just a pinch. To fit the tire under the fender, while also making the rim lip flush with the fender required a slight stretch. That’s why we went with 245/40 R19 sizing. Considering that a nice fit for a 9.5-inch width is about a 255 tire, the 245 was just enough to get under the fender without sacrificing too much of the tire’s functionality. Remember kids: stretching tires can cause contact patch issues as well as reduced tire integrity, so make sure you’re not overdoing it. If you’re going to be dumb, at least be smart about it.

STRETCHING TIRES CAN CAUSE CONTACT PATCH ISSUES AS WELL AS REDUCED TIRE INTEGRITY, SO MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT OVERDOING IT.

BC RACING BR SERIES COILOVERS Getting the wheels and tires on the car is one thing, but getting it down is another, so we called on BC Racing to see what they had cooking. Fortunately, they offer a BR Series G37x application and it was highly rated by other owners, so we pulled the trigger. The BR Series is the most accessible coilover in the BC range and is meant for street driving over actual track days, but that doesn’t mean it skimps on anything. This coilover is fully featured with a mono-tube shock design, 30-way damping adjustability and front camber adjustment. The

height adjustment mechanism is also separate of the piston stroke, which allows you to go lower while retaining decent ride comfort. BC also offers custom solutions if you’re tackling something special. We didn’t have the time to wait for the custom turnaround, so we settled on the regular 10-kg front spring rate and 8-kg rear, which worked out great. One of the custom options we toyed with the idea of was the “extreme low” option, but we ended up with plenty of low with the off-the-shelf kit. Extreme low must be some serious business.

SPC ADJUSTABLE FRONT UPPER CONTROL ARMS, REAR CAMBER ARMS, TOE CAMS & LOCKING PLATES Of course, all that low with the aggressive wheel and tire setup would be meaningless unless we could manipulate it to fit where we wanted it. That’s where SPC’s suspension components come into play. Up front, we used SPC’s Adjustable front upper control arms, which can also be used on the G35, 350Z and 370Z. These arms allowed us positive and negative three-degrees of camber and caster adjustment, all while matching the OEM design, which eliminates fender interference – bonus! In the rear, it’s a team effort. SPC’s adjustable rear lower control arms, camber lockout plates and extended range toe cams give a combined effort that allows positive and negative three degrees of camber and two degrees of toe adjustment. The arms employ SPC’s xAxis sealed flex joints, which act like monoballs, but utilize non-metal bushings to last longer over OEM. Upgrades all around!

PROJECT KICS LEGGDURA RACING TWO-PIECE SHELL TYPE LOCK LUG NUTS You’ve got to go all out, right? To match the gold hardware on the wheels, we sourced some gold Project KICS Leggdura two-piece lug nuts. Their “shell type” design is pretty revolutionary for anyone who likes to run colored lugs. Each lug is made up of two pieces, with four plain black lugs and one lock being secured to the wheel by the usual means, but then the colored “shell” is screwed on top to finish it all off. So, your wheels are secure and your lugs always look as good as the day you bought them. This was a no-brainer.

Once all the wheels were bolted up, the car was dropped and the question was asked, “Hey, Rich. How does that look?” “Lower,” was uttered in response. 54

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER The moment of truth. Gathering all the product you’ve researched tirelessly and crossing your fingers that it all works together to produce the look you’ve been chasing. So, will Rotiform, Toyo, BC Racing, SPC and Project KICS work out and look good? The answer is hell yes. Especially with the capable hands at Pickering Auto Lab helping us piece this G37 together. We brought the car into the shop and got it up on the hoist, where Matthew Brunette-Mzik, our personal workhorse for the day, got to work taking off the OEM wheels, suspension and arms. Meanwhile, our other tech, Saif Sanwal, got to work mounting the tires to the wheels. With our tire stretch not being too drastic, Saif only needed to use one Cheetah tire bead sealer. No flames needed this time, folks. He also spraypainted the wheel weights black, which, in our minds, makes them more legit. The wheels and tires were then balanced and set aside. Meanwhile, superhero Matt had installed the front and rear suspension components, making note of their OEM counterparts for measurement’s sake. The coilovers were then installed and adjusted for the first time. Then it was time for the first time with the wheels on the car and they suit it perfectly. Once all the wheels were bolted up, the car was dropped and the question was asked, “Hey, Rich. How does that look?” “Lower,” was uttered in response. So, up it went again, more measurements were made and it came down looking awesome. Could it go lower? Yes. And it would, as the springs settled under the weight of the car. In fact, after taking the G for a quick boot and then getting it set up on the alignment machine, there was already a noticeable difference. As the car was a good three inches lower over stock, it was a bit of a challenge getting the G on the ramps for the 3D laser alignment machine. We did it eventually with some extra help from some good old wooden ramps. Once up, it was time to adjust all the SPC goodies and get everything dialed in. Rich had initially stated that he didn’t want to go over negative three degrees of camber, but that soon went out the window when it came to finding the balance between fitment and drivability. The front ended up receiving negative 3.5 degrees of camber, while the rear squatted out at 4.8. Once off the alignment machine, the car had sagged again, leaving the wheel lip a few millimeters from the fender. Perfect. Exactly how we wanted it. We then applied a few stickers and screwed on the shell pieces of the Project KICS lugs and it was time for the end of the day shoot! IT’S YEAR 70 OF THE COSMIC ERA. SEVENTY YEARS SINCE HUMANITY LEFT EARTH TO LIVE IN SPACE COLONIES. HOWEVER, SINCE LEAVING EARTH, HUMANITY HASN’T BEEN ABLE TO LEAVE WAR BEHIND. TWO FACTIONS DO BATTLE WITH SUPER-ADVANCED, HIGH-MOBILITY MECHS CALLED MOBILE SUITS, WITH THE MOST ADVANCED AND FEARSOME BEINGS DEEMED “GUNDAMS.”

seemingly peaceful day is thrown into chaos as a siren wails and tells of an attack by the opposing faction on your colony. You look out into space to see a new model enemy mobile suit has blown through the colony defenses and is reaching to unlock the airlock hatch and gain access to the colony itself. Just before the suit can engage the lock, there is a blur of red, leaving the enemy mobile suit’s arm cut clean off and drifting off into space. You look out to see that your savior is the Gundam Astray Red Frame… Ford Focus? Jumping to a different timeline, it’s 2015 and Rally Innovations has been challenged with building a Ford Focus for SEMA. They need something that will not only grab attention, but test themselves from a building and design standpoint. Thankfully, Rally Innovations co-owner John Peñano’s son had a suggestion. “My nine-year-old son, Jet, actually said that he thought it would be really cool if we built something like [a Gundam].” Peñano says. “Fortunately, too, the team members who supported and worked on the car were fans of Gundam and the anime as well.”

Peñano himself wasn’t a fan, or too familiar with the Gundam series, but he was about to get a crash course. Rally Innovations’ first move was to decide on which mobile suit from the series they’d focus their artistic vision on. With a storied history of over 37 years, that’s no easy task. The solution, however, came much easier than they anticipated. Initially, the team settled on the “Strike Noir” Gundam, which features blacks and grays with small red and yellow accents. When this was pitched to Ford though, they thought it was a little too dark and menacing, so it was back to the drawing board. While mocking up the phase two rendering, it was discovered that white was the best base color to work with since it was the easiest to see the car’s bodylines on. After trying out a few different accenting colors, red was decided on, as the team thought it lent to the simplicity of the white. A Gundam that’s white and red? There’s only one real choice there: the Astray Red Frame! The MBF-P02 Astray Red Frame was one of five prototype mobile suits that were being developed in secret and then mysteriously covered up in the series. The unit was

discovered by its pilot, Lowe Guele, who’s a technician from an organization called the Junk Guild, which is pretty much the equivalent of a mechanic stumbling upon a supercar in a garbage pile. The Red Frame was designed with lighter materials and minimal armor to be faster than other Gundams. Rally Innovations’ Red Frame certainly wasn’t discovered in a junk heap or designed for warfare, but their Focus was developed in secret to be outstanding. To make

sure they were being faithful to the mobile suit’s design, Peñano’s team actually went out and bought a 1/100 scale Master Grade model of the Red Frame Astray and built it for reference material. “Looking at the kit and its different pieces and their shapes, like the knee caps and the shoulder pads, really gave us a starting point of how to form the fenders to give the look of the mobile suit,” explains Peñano. “There are other details on the car, like the raised eyebrows that represent the V-fin on the head. If you really look at the car, I think it has the same intricacies and details as the Gundam model. We tried to replicate this as a model kit that we were putting on the car.” It really is all there. The raised eyebrows are the V-fin, and the painted middle of the front lip is the signature red goatee. The formed metal fenders are the shoulder and knee armor, while the vented hood is the chest ventilation system. The rear hatch spoiler could even be the flight system backpack. There are hidden

engravings of the Red Frames face all over the place as well, like on the brake rotors and the rear seat delete panel. All exposed hardware on the fenders and spoiler are hidden to produce more of the model kit aesthetic – the fenders are even slightly gapped from the body to show off the red LED lighting that emits from underneath. One would think that pitching a domestic car with heavy Japanese anime styling to a domestic vehicle manufacturer would be problematic, but Peñano says that a design pitch has never gone that well. “This was the first time that we’ve ever rendered something, and the manufacturer didn’t want to change it at all,” he laughs. “Even throughout the build, we tried to show them different renderings and they kept saying no! The car ended up being about 90 to 95 percent faithful to the rendering.” While being faithful to the rendering, the Focus also needed to be faithful to the mobile suit’s speedy and athletic purpose. To be light on its feet, a set of Rays Gram Lights 57 Xtreme wheels

are bolted on underneath RS-R’s Sports-i coilover suspension in a 19x8.5 square setup and wrapped in capable Nitto NT555 tires. The propulsion system is made up of a COBB Accessport V3 tuner and GReddy’s Airnix intake system and 24LS intercooler kit. The pilot’s cockpit features a custom four-point roll cage by Rally Innovations with Gundam shields laser-engraved into the metal. Bride and Cusco teamed up on the limited Euroster II+C seating arrangement, which straps the operator in with Cusco four-point harnesses. So, did Rally Innovations achieve their goal of building the Gundam of Ford Focuses? Fantastic SEMA attendee feedback and a Project Excellence Award from Ford would confirm that to be true. Capturing the essence of a high performance mobile suit in a domestic platform is a huge challenge, but Rally Innovations pulled it off like they were engineers from the Cosmic Era. Maybe in a different timeline, they’d be working on developing the next generation of mobile suits.

n this hobby/lifestyle/cult – whatever you want to call it – that we’re a part of, change is good. You’re encouraged to rip something off and replace it with something better. A classic case of this (and the point of this how-to) is with Acuras, both old and new. To be more “JDM,” enthusiasts have been ripping off their “A” and replacing them with Honda’s “H” for what seems like forever, and that trend has spread. In specific to my car, a Scion FR-S, it’s been very popular to swap out the plasticy Scion badges and replace them with some shiny, new Toyota ones. I’ve even seen some Lexus badges on Scions, which is hilarious. When I first got my car, I didn’t want to swap out the badges. “It’s a Scion, so I’m going to keep it a Scion,” is what I told myself. But one day, while browsing Instagram and running up

my phone’s data bill, I came across an account named “pete39sp.” As you can guess, this guy’s name is Pete. Pete runs a passion project called PTCustoms, in which he’ll custom design and cut emblems for your car. I wasn’t after a custom job, however, I wanted the old school Toyota badge that is often featured on his page. The “TEQ” mark, as some enthusiasts call it, is still used by Toyota on both OEM replacement and performance parts as a stamp of quality. As a bit of a good luck charm for my FR-S’s reliability, and also because they look sweet, I went ahead and ordered a set. Pete actually boxes a set of instructions in with your emblems, which are very helpful and thorough, but I’ve put my own twist on them and added some pretty pictures for some extra help. LOOSEN THE EMBLEM

Don’t even think of doing this with a dusty, dirty car. I don’t even want to imagine what it would do to your paint. After it’s cleaned and dried nicely, you can assemble the tools you’ll need.

As you can see from my picture, you’ll need your new emblems, some rags or cloths, adhesive remover (I doubled down and went with Goo Gone for the easy stuff and 3M Adhesive Remover for the really stubborn gunk) and a pack of tooth floss (mint flavoring optional).

Using your floss and some light-duty adhesive remover (Goo Gone) as something similar to penetrating oil, wedge your floss in behind the OEM emblem and get to sawing. The reason I’m using tooth floss over fishing line is because floss has a coating on it that protects your tooth enamel when you’re plucking away. That coating has the same effect on your clear coat, so you don’t have to worry about messing anything up. The disadvantage of tooth floss is its integrity; it will break a lot, so be patient. In the end, your paint will be safe.

PRY IT OFF

GET YOUR EMBLEMS READY

Once you can peel the emblem forward and get your fingers underneath, gently pry it off to be left with a ring of adhesive stuck to your car. This is where the heavy-duty adhesive comes in handy. I sprayed generous amounts of 3M adhesive remover at the glue and it came off after a while of scrubbing with some trusty rags. Make sure to get it all off! This was actually fairly easy, so I decided to remove my FR-S lettering as well for a cleaner look. Use the same steps and caution when removing your other emblem(s).

If you flip over your emblems, you’ll see that Pete has already cut and attached 3M automotive tape to them. Thanks, man! Peel off the backing and either mark up your location or get a spotter (I did) to make sure you’re putting them on exactly where you want. Press down firmly and make sure you work your way all the way around the taped areas of the emblem. If you feel you need to, grab a heat gun or hair drier to encourage the tape to stick if you’re doing this on an overcast or chilly day.

STEP 5

CLEAN YOUR APPLICATION AREA

Use whatever you usually do for a quick clean. Waterless wash and wax, quick detailer - whatever you like. After it’s sparkling clean, grab some degreaser and give it a good rub down to remove any excess wax before you get to the exciting part.

And that’s it! Shine your new emblems up and show them off. MAGNUM OPUS MARK YUEN IS GOING OUT WITH A BANG

e all have to start from somewhere, and for most of us, it isn't the top. We struggle and train ourselves in order to advance to the level where we want to be at. And even through all that, there's no guarantee that we'll actually make it. Then there are guys like Mark Yuen of Medford, New Jersey, to whom things just seem to come easy. The car-building gene is coded in his DNA. The vision, the knowhow and the execution are all flowing through Mark’s veins like they’re part of his soul. As for us normies, we can just sit back and enjoy the end products of his hard work. Okay, well, maybe it’s not so easy for him. Let's flash back to when Mark constructed his first project car, a 1995 Acura Legend coupe. It was just at the kickoff of the import scene and there weren’t a lot of aftermarket parts available, especially for a Legend, so close to everything had to be custom crafted. From there, it would take two hands to count the number of project cars that Mark has tallied up in his 15 year reign, and most of them are not your typical run of the mill builds. All were assembled with JDM-inspired battle gear and each one unique in their own respect. From big sedans like an Infiniti M45 converted to Nissan Cedric/Gloria specs to a Lexus IS300 sport sedan that received a full Toyota Altezza workover. Just to keep things interesting, Mark even had a chance to throw in a sport crossover Vertex-outfitted Lexus RX330 grocery getter (sort of) into the mix. His wife had to be turning every head in supermarket

parking lots while she was dodging shopping carts and bad drivers. Now we get to his recent baby, a VIP-style Lexus LS460 that is as wide as it is low, and a production on Mark’s resume that has been 15 years in the making. Mark’s goal behind this build was to set his LS460 apart from all other VIP cars out in the show scene. Did Mark set himself up for a mission impossible? We’ll let you be the judge of that. Utilizing his creative mind and with some assistance from his numerous sponsors, Mark was able to put forth the beast that you see before you. Mark knew that just slapping together a few body kit pieces and some rims wouldn’t help the LS460 stand out from the pack. There are too many wannabe VIP cars and self-proclaimed show stoppers out there nowadays. He had to take drastic measures to ensure that the presence of his massive sedan was felt everywhere he went. The first and most radical step to accomplishing this task was to equip his already sultry Lexus with a K-Break Hyper Zero Customs body kit. Tack on the Fizz Auto-

sports spoilers and custom molded wide fenders and Mark’s LS460 takes up a damn lot of space. With the price of real estate in New York, it’s a good thing that he lives in Jersey. Each piece of the puzzle fits perfectly, as they were carefully installed and blended to enhance the stock bodylines. From the rear, it looks as if Mark’s LS could take up two full parking spaces on its own. Do you know how many hours

women spend at the gym to try to get curves like that? After the bodywork was perfected, Mark had the crew drench his car with a Brilliant Silver BASF paint mixed with special pink pearl flakes. This resulted in a super intense and deep paint job that makes you want to walk up and lick Mark’s car from bumper to bumper, though we highly recommend against it. Now, how does one fill such

wide expectations? We’re talking about the ginormous gaps in the wheel wells. First order of business was to make sure that the chassis could be on the ground when you want it to be, and then up again when driving through some pothole-riddled roads. An AirREX air suspension system gives Mark full control of that from the driver’s seat whenever he needs to adjust the ride height. He then stuffed some jumbo-sized Leon Hardiritt Jager wheels and Toyo T1-Sport tires in 21-inch form under the fenders. Between the multi-spoke design and fat lips, you’ll see a set of iDeal Japan big brake calipers all around that Mark enlisted to slow down his monstrosity. VIP is more than just a fat body kit and some curtains. To us, it means rolling in luxury full time, so an elite audio system and a plush interior are must-haves. The trunk of this LS460 is lined with

red leather and full Audison audio system, from subwoofers to amplifiers to components. With enough bass to piss off Mark’s neighbors in the next city over, it's toned down a tad to ensure that he doesn’t draw too much attention from the local fuzz. The red leather and Aston Martin diamond stitching carries over into the cabin area, giving the Lexus an even more lavish feel, if that were even possible. If this were a pizza, it would be referred to as “The Works”. Mark has come a long way since that 1995 Legend and has countless car show trophies and magazine features to show for his dedication. He’s mentored younger car builders and paved the way for the next generation of enthusiasts, showing them that age doesn’t matter. This isn’t a sport; it’s a craft that most fall short of perfecting. But when he does finally tap out, at least his parting gift to himself is much nicer than anything we can buy ourselves with what’s left in our depleted retirement accounts.

prime example of a car that evokes emotion is Bulletproof Automotive’s BMW Z4 GT Continuum. Just looking at this car is an event in itself. Getting behind the wheel is another world of sensation, with its chopped roof and short windscreen providing more than enough wind through your hair and the feeling of going double the speed at double the danger level. GT Continuum is a pretty loaded suffix, but just what does it mean? The owner of Bulletproof Automotive, Ben Schaffer, explains that the name was born out of inspiration from Japanese GT cars and the concept of continuum itself.

“The essence of continuum is a blend between space and time, quite literally in this case,” he says. “A blend between time because it’s ultra-modern, but also a 1950s vintage racecar throwback; and space in terms of it being a real global inspiration with the inspiration details coming from all corners of the world.” When you think about it, this really is a global build. It’s a European car, being built by Americans with Japanese inspiration, which sounds like the best recipe for a car ever: a fantastic platform built by truly innovative people with the finest parts available. However, it was a crazy undertaking that all started from a chat over dinner one night.

VARiANT “THE VARiS Z4 WiDeBODY CAME AlONG AT JUsT THE RiGHT TiME FOR BUlleTPROOF AND iT GOT THE CReATiVE JUiCeS flOWiNG.” “We were at dinner and our friends at Varis showed us a sketch of what was going to be the Z4 widebody,” Schaffer recalls. “Because I’m a car nut, I stupidly said that if they made that kit, I’d buy a car just to put that kit on. I kind of dug myself into a hole there. I committed to do a build because I liked the sketch a lot.” If you’ll recall, Bulletproof has previously built a very successful car in partnership with Varis – the Concept One FR-S. Receiving such critical acclaim for a car is great for the confidence, but it leaves a throbbing question behind: what next? The Varis Z4 widebody came along at just the right time for Bulletproof, and it got the creative juices flowing. “When it came time to come up with the plan, my business partner, Avi, and I were talking and we bounced different ideas around,” says Schaffer. “One night, we were talking and when we were looking at this concept, we both thought that is was just crazy enough to be really cool. It became something that internally in the office, people looked at us like we had lost our minds, but that’s the fun. An aspect of the build that most wouldn’t expect is the lost art of coach building. Just as Pininfarina or Carozzeria take Ferraris and sculpt them into something completely unique, Bulletproof took this Z4 and produced something jaw-dropping. The roof is gone from the car, and with it, the pillars followed. The doors had the glass removed from inside, then had the openings welded up and were shaved smooth – door handles and all. The fenders were cut out and replaced with much wider aerodynamic Varis offerings. Hand-cut glass was positioned in front of the driver in the form of a lower windshield, and

below it, the top dash was ripped out and replaced with a handmade fiberglass one that’s been dipped in the same shade of Ferrari gray that the exterior wears. The rear decklid was treated to the same painting and manufacturing process as the dash, while being hand-shaped to come up to meet the back of the seats’ headrests. Inside, almost every surface has been covered in red diamondstitched leather. Even the carpets have been removed to make way for the upper-class upholstery. The seats, which have been sourced from a BMW M4 are wired to retain all their luxurious functions, while the rears of the seats have been reworked with the same stitched leather as the rest of the interior. There’s even a curious material that takes up residence inside the Z4 that I can say we’ve never heard of before: stingray leather. “We wanted to play around with some new materials, so we found a supplier that deals in stingray hides,” Shaffer explains. “When you reach in, there’s a stingray pull strap that you pull on and the door opens. We used some sting ray on the steering wheel as well.” As the GT Continuum was born out of chasing the raw driving feel of ‘50s and ‘60s roadsters and speedsters, there were a few modifications made to make the

Under the hood is an improved cooling system from ETS that helps handle the extra engine work put out by the ESS Stage II tuning software that pushes the Z4 to approximately 400 horsepower. This is all amplified by the custom “Trident” exhaust that escapes from the passenger-side fender. If face-fulls of wind, 400 horses and unrestricted exhaust notes from an inline-six in front of you don’t make you feel something, you may be a robot. The whole package is finished off on some RAYS Volk Racing G25 wheels paired with some sticky Toyo R888s and a monstrous 1,800-mm Varis GT wing.
