Testing for the upcoming 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup required a new ‘drag sled’ that simulates the pull of a heavy trailer up steep mountain grades, since the old sled didn’t sufficiently challenge the more powerful new F-Series. So Ford created a steeper and tougher ‘virtual mountain’ to use during hot weather testing in areas of Arizona that didn’t provide enough of the real kind, or that allowed Ford to simulate mountain grades in various areas of its test facility. The sled simulates steep grades by creating drag against the prototype truck, with the new sled providing up to maximum ‘gravity pull’ of 5,620 pounds. That may not sound like that much for a heavy duty pickup, but it’s 181 percent increase in resistance compared to the old one.

By 2005, they had to move to a new, larger facility and hired on a full staff to meet demands for vehicle customization in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Today, Brian’s Motorsports (BMS) is a recognized name that specializes in customizing trucks, classic cars, and their most popular export, Jeeps. In fact, BMS cranks five to 10 show-stopping Jeeps a week out of their bay doors. One of their latest creations is actually a personal one, and it has a name: Sgt. Steele. While the name definitely does fit the appearance of the Wrangler, Hayes,

as a family man, had another influence in choosing the militarythemed moniker. “I named the Jeep Sgt. Steele to pay respect to military people and soldiers everywhere,” he says. “They don’t get enough credit for the time they spend away from their families.” Fittingly so, Sarge is outfitted with Armor from Smittybilt’s XRC armory. The catalogue of parts provides the Jeep with maximum protection and enough clearance to bound enemy obstructions, while also revealing the super clean DV8 inner fenders underneath. front bumper, with Oracle Lighting’s halo kit and a Rugged Ridge Spartan grille. Backing up the “Steele” name, multiple custom-machined aluminum pieces take up residence all over the exterior of the Wrangler, which complement some pretty serious gray and orange powdercoating work. While the outside maintains the rugged exterior of a warrior, the inside can be a little cushy. Roadwire provides the luxury there with their diamond-stitched upholstery featuring gray inserts. The checkbox for heated seats were also ticked off, just in case it got a little cold on the trails at night. And trail-running at night shouldn’t be a problem with eight LED light cubes and a 50-inch LED light bar from Rough Country, which are all controllable from an SPOD lighting switch panel. Speaking of Rough Country, BMS is the largest dealer of Rough Country’s suspension lift kits, so of course they’d outfit Sgt. Steele with some altered altitude. A Long Arm 6-inch upgrade kit and 1.25inch body lift provide a better vantage point. The kit’s capabilities are then boosted by dual reservoir shocks and a steering stabilizer from Fox.

Hayes says that BMS’s specialty has always been wheels, tires and audio/video upgrades, so it’s no surprise that they’ve put some pretty impressive names to use on the Jeep. Forgiato is the name that takes up a shining place on each corner of the Wrangler, with their Veraso-T wheels in 24x12inch sizing. Since the Jeep still has to be capable, no street tire would do here, so Hayes and his team snagged some Toyo Open Country M/T tires in a meaty 40/15.50. With the added oversized wheels and tires, as well as the Yukon 5.13 gearing, the Wrangler was going to need 60

adjustments via the Superchips calibrator, which was an easy plug and play away. The audio department starts out strong with Alpine’s X009WRA head unit system. The Alpine unit integrates seamlessly with the Wrangler’s dash, while creating a stylish upgrade and offering a host of features, like navigation, connectivity to just about any device, and retention of all your factory controls. Of course, it still plays music, a job it does even better when connected to the Kicker components, tower speakers, amplifiers and four 12-inch subwoofers in the back.

“The love of visualizing something and making it come to life is my motivation to build,” says Hayes. “My favorite aspect with this build has to be the respect it gets from kids all the way to adults. Everyone loves it!” We agree. With an action hero name, plus the looks and capability to match, how could you not love this thing? We just hope that between producing at least 20 Jeeps a month, Hayes and his team find the time to construct something even better in the coming years.

he team at Orion take pride in stealing all attention from a room, hall, outdoor space, convention center, etc. Take CES for example. In arguably one of the most packed and labyrinthine events that are held at the massive convention space in Las Vegas, you can find Orion’s floor presence by following the noise and pissed off booth neighbors. This year, once

you’d arrived, you’d see a Dodge Challenger, Jeep Wrangler, a Polaris Side x Side, and the centerpiece, this incredible Dodge Ram 2500. “It’s a mobile party truck,” chuckles Edgar Cedeno, the man behind Orion. “We wanted to make sure that the only thing we needed when we pulled up to the party was the girls.” Not that those are ever in short supply anywhere in Miami, where Orion is based.

Actually, the aforementioned Jeep is feature alumni to PASMAG’s Truck issue and served as the inspiration for this Ram. The Wrangler was a version one, if you will, with its fold-out wings loaded with bass cannons. Cedeno says that the Jeep was a “medium-sized build” to them and that they wanted to go “bigger and better.” With five of their high-end HCCA series amplifiers powering 34 (you read that right) of

helped solve an issue that Orion had problems with before: weight. On past projects, Orion would have to splurge on custom suspension setups, but because the Ram is a 2500 and meant to be worked, they went with some beefed up offerings from Pro Comp and reinforced the chassis with some bracing bars. Other than that, the 2500 is able to handle the extra payload. But just how much extra are we talking here? Well, Cedeno assures me that they increased the total weight to 10,640 pounds. With a

four-door 4x4 5.7L-equipped 2500 weighing in at 6,476 pounds loaded to the teeth, Orion tacked at least 4,164 extra pounds of good time. The Ram hauls all that extra weight around to shows as well. That’s right, they actually drive this thing around! To be fair though, they’ve made it way easier on themselves this time around. With the Jeep, everything was manual and needed to be folded up and away by hand. The Dodge has been completely wired up to automatically put its toys away with the push of a button. “It’s so easy with the Ram because we made everything automatic,” Cedeno says. “We have the whole build in the bed and everything folds in. We built a special

The Ram is much easier when it comes to preparing it for shows.” The literal boatload of audio gear the Ram has to haul around is just the precursor to the party. On top of the massive box in the bed is a 60-inch Vizio LED TV, which can lower and raise in and out of the box. Orion’s team usually plays music videos to complement the beats the truck is pumping out, but they’ve often tossed on the game and had a killer tailgate. Also, in the rear door on the driver’s side is a Pioneer DJ console. The console can

be used to just plug in a playlist, or have an actual DJ setup and mix on the spot. When both the console and TV are used together, however, that’s when the party really kicks it into high-gear. That’s right: karaoke! Those who are drunk enough to think they can sing are able to hook up some microphones and go to town, while following along with the lyrics on the 60-inch screen. We weren’t lying when we said this Ram is a mobile party. For Cedeno, what really matters is how people have enjoyed themselves when they’re around the truck. He loves hearing

people’s reactions to the thumping fun factory. “The feedback from people is that it sounds like a really good concert,” Cedeno says. “Once you play it loud, the reaction from people is unbelievable. No one has come up with a concept like this before.” It definitely is a one-of-a-kind concept. Building wild trucks in a short timeline for SEMA is no foreign subject to Brandon Burrell, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exactly the kind of project he embarked on with his 2015 Toyota Tundra. After picking up the truck in April of 2015, he had a window of six months to put together a show-stopping final product for SEMA 2015 that would out-do his last one.

suspension and performance improvements, as well as Ultimate Audio in Lexington, SC for the custom interior work. Extra power under the hood comes courtesy of an Airaid intake and shorty headers from Doug Thorley, but the real draw to this truck is in its custom style touches. The Sunset Bronze Mica and copper color scheme, which remains congruent through the Fuel wheels, lights and interior, carries a similar allure to expensive chocolate in ornate, decorative packaging. Even the truck’s underside shines with a gorgeous paint job. All suspension, axle and differential components were either color-matched to the truck’s body paint or powder-coated copper. The “Dark Earth” theme continues inside with beautiful brown leather and suede upholstery from Roadwire, accented with diamond stitching, decorating the cockpit. Color-matched dash panels, door panels and trim around all of the Memphis Audio M-Class sound system’s components really drives the theme home and gives the rugged looking truck a surprisingly luxurious feel. As expected, the truck was a hit for SEMA, pleasing crowds and sponsors alike. Being a well-rounded builder, however, usually means that no project is ever truly “complete." One year after purchasing the car, and six months after stealing the show at SEMA, Brandon decided it was time to go the distance and turn this build into a different kind of spectacle in April of 2016. Already happy with the way the truck itself was looking, Burrell took an unconventional approach to revamping his show truck by way of a custom-built, theme-matched trailer (thanks to Rhino Linings of WNC) made to carry three custom Honda Groms.

Texas resident and nurse, Alma Molina, experienced what could only be described as a genuine automotive nightmare when building her former dream car for SEMA 2014. After working all year and saving up little by little, she purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. As soon as she signed the papers, the race was on to complete a bona fide show truck for the 2014 SEMA show. Renderings were drafted and sent off to RevTek, and in less than two months the truck began to resemble the vision her and her husband, Carlos, had in mind.

nfortunately, as is all too often the case with tight-deadline projects, a wrench was thrown in the gears. In the time Alma had owned the truck, it had seen the service department of the local dealership 12 times for “check engine” problems. The final straw was when Alma was left stranded over 300 miles from home. Convinced nothing could be done for her former dream vehicle, the

dream was abandoned, the truck was traded in for a compact car, and the plans for SEMA 2014 were put on hold. Following the disappointing turn of events, Alma soon found herself attracted to the newest generation of aluminum body Ford F-150 models. With the 2014 season in the rearview and 2015 SEMA show on the horizon, she pulled the trigger on a 2015 EcoBoost model,

with sights set on SEMA once again. Another rendering was created and sent out to Mamba wheels for approval on the concept, and in May of 2015, they were given the green light. Building a truck for SEMA means the body of the truck could not stay the way it came from factory. If you’re aiming to do something truly different, it can become a bit of a challenge when working with such a new vehicle.

Fiberwerx, an aftermarket innovator out of California, stepped up to the plate with the first ever Baja-styled kit for the new F-150 body, which consisted of a full front fender replacement and bed extensions, drastically changing the truck’s profile. SVT Raptors helped continue the theme with Baja-style front and rear bumpers from LEX Offroad, as well as a custom made bed organizer made to hold two spare 37-inch tires. Air Design USA’s tailgate spoiler, applique and hood scoop in combination with AVS’ hood shield and lowpro vent visors add some aero aesthetics to the build, while AMP Research lends some practical accessibility to the skyward truck with a bed-step out back and powersteps along the sides. Completing the off-road runner look is a black T-Rex Torch series grille with an integrated LED light bar. Those 37-inch tires from Tri-Ace are wrapped around an aggressive and purpose-built set of matte black 20-inch Mamba M16 wheels, which hide R1 Concepts brake kits behind them. Of course, fitting tires as big as those requires some height adjustments as well. Enter MaxTrac suspension, which provides the F-150 with an additional 7.5-inches of lift using

only the spindles. To tie the whole look together, Caliber Collision in El Paso was commissioned to give Alma’s truck a one-of-a-kind look, complete with tire tracks, Mamba’s signature snake head and the Mamba brand name after painting and fitting the new body pieces. Being a full-blown show truck destined for the SEMA ﬂoor, the cabin could not be left alone any more than the exterior could.

Alma intended to continue driving the truck for daily usage once the show was over, so practicality and comfort were important factors in outfitting the interior. Roadwire seats, a popular and comfortable choice for aftermarket truck interiors, were picked out in a beautiful black leather with red accents. The outfitted Loudmouth exhaust coming from the Stett Performance downpipe may be loud, but the sound system is louder. In order to achieve a groundpounding, hair-raising volume, the

Three 12-inch subwoofers, three sets of component/ door speakers, and four separate amps are all easily controlled by a touchscreen DVD/navigation head unit supplied by Clarion, complete with back-up camera integration – a perfect choice for the future daily commuter truck. One year from the devastating decision to end the Silverado project, Alma’s badass F-150 brought her and the Projekt Cars team to the SEMA ﬂoor in the Mamba wheels booth, fulfilling her dream and giving her and the builders behind the truck the recognition they undoubtedly deserved. “SEMA 2015 was just the beginning for Projekt Nurse, and we will soon see more upgrades as the industry begins to provide more products for the new F-150 platform,” Carlos and Alma write to us, hinting at further development in the near future. Stories like this just go to show that a little perseverance, even under the worst circumstances, can pay off.
