e all like going a little fast now and then, right? Who am I kidding; we’re all a little guilty of having a lead foot. Well, it’s a good thing you picked us up because this issue of PASMAG has been freshly filled to the brim with some pretty high octane content – whether it be a part you’re chasing after, or just something to get you inspired. You know those posters you had on your wall as a kid that depicted the awesome cars that you were hoping to own when you’re older? That’s what this issue is comprised of. Our feature line-up is ridiculously awesome and each one should make you want a print on your wall, no matter what your age is. You’ll no doubt have noticed the bodacious widebody NSX that takes up residence on our cover. Yes, it’s in a glass box. No, it’s not a model or RC car. Kaizen Tuning really wanted to show what they could do when they put together their Varis widebody WRX STI. Keily Mackey swapped a 2JZ into an S15, bolted American muscle parts to it and broke purists’ hearts, all to save the S-chassis’ life. There’s even a Honda Odyssey pieced together by Takero’s that’s getting some pretty fantastic numbers at Tsukuba these days. If this isn’t getting you started up, you might need to change your plugs. aring to be different is exactly how James Mueller got to where he is today. How many Lancer Ralliarts do you see cruising around with air suspension and fender flares? Exactly. Mueller is no stranger to building cars or the name Mitsubishi. His previous build, a widebodied and supercharged Eclipse, boasted more than 20 awards from shows all over the US and has been featured in more than 50 magazine articles, some of which it even graced the cover. Jada Toys even wanted in on the action and made a 1:64 scale model of the veteran show-goer. To follow up a success like that, Mueller decided

to go with something that was turbocharged and all-wheel-drive – just to shake things up a bit. The AWD actually had another purpose as well. “I bought an AWD car so I could make it through the terrible winters in the Midwest,” Mueller admits. “I started by just adding things to make my daily driver more unique, but it ended up turning into an obsession, just like every other car I’ve owned.” Going with standout brands like Avant Garde, AMS, CBRD, D2 Racing, R1 Concepts and Rexpeed, Mueller soon had himself less of a daily driver and more of a full-time show car. On D2’s air system with Unnwerke flared haunches and some extra turbo kick under the hood, it’s employee of the month at its new position. How else could it have amassed an incredible 64 percent of the popular vote at Hot Import Nights’ #TBGLIVE event? From here, Mueller shows no signs of slowing. He started picking away at cars as soon as he could drive, which snowballed as he got older. Now in his 30s, there’s still plenty of gas left in the tank for another showstopper or two.

lexime Maldera Vu of Terrebonne, Quebec, has always put the 350Z at the top of his list. It has been his dream car ever since he can remember. He’s always had a soft spot for Japanese cars and when he saw the 350Z with all of it’s perfect curves, it was love at first sight. Over the last few years Alexime has had many vehicles, which were all modified one after another. After owning six previous Honda Civics, none of them lived up to what he pictured as the perfect car. Each and every one of those builds were sold with every intention of getting him

closer to his Nissan. Now that he finally has it, it seems like it’s a never-ending project, but he’s loving every minute of it. Over the last four months when building this car, Alexime knew that no matter what he did, there were going to be haters. Instead of building this car to fit in with today’s trends, he added in his own style and made this car a reflection of his personality. He started with an idea of what he wanted, but never knew that he would have so many people appreciate his work. Alexime and his crew, So Clean, are a very tightknit group and they were there when he needed them throughout the build. Every part on his car is chosen strictly for the quality and not the name, because it’s how it performs that matters. Last year, Alexime was in an accident that nearly took his life. He has since vowed to himself that he will live his life to the fullest each and every day, or at least how far his wallet can take him.

ohn Perez purchased his 1993 Mazda RX-7 10 years ago in New York as a project for him and his son. It’s always been a dream car for the two, and is Perez’s third custom build after his Toyota Supra and Honda Prelude. In fact, it’s his son’s passion for cars that first drove Perez into the building scene. Over the next five to six years, beginning in 2005, the father and son duo invested nearly $100,000 on everything from a Precision wastegate to a Garrett GT42R turbocharger; two of which don’t even begin to scratch the long list of engine mods. Perez acknowledges that the

amount of cash dropped on an RX-7 may seem excessive to some, but that’s overweighed by the bond he and his son shared. “Regardless of how expensive and time consuming the project was, the events and time my son and I spend together are priceless,” he says. Ironically, the RX-7 was initially intended to be strictly for show, but after much criticism on its speed, the two decided on an engine re-build, which has since become a favorite for Perez. As the two worked on the car, they decided to try keeping it, not only as JDM as possible, but as unique as possible. In doing so, Perez aimed for parts like RE-Amemiya and LEG Sport, which are rarely seen on North American soil. The RX-7 has since seen its fair share of shows; travelling to Maryland, Atlantic City, Philadelphia and New York City to name a few. As for inspiration during the build… let’s just the say Perez and son are no strangers to watching Fast and Furious or playing Need for Speed.

Owner Fumihito Kawashima points in the direction of a white Evo wagon and a white Stagea RS. “That black thing there.” Huh? The only “black thing” in the vicinity is a shopping bicycle, complete with basket on the front. “You own a track-only Odyssey and your daily is a shopping bike?!” “Yup. My son owns an Evo 7 daily, though,” he laughs.

This conversation, and the fact Kawashima-san decided to build a track-only Odyssey in the first place (ignore the number plate – it’s registered, but has no shaken so is illegal to drive), should be all the information you need to understand he is no normal car enthusiast. An apparel industry worker by trade, Kawashima-san also did the majority of the work on the Odyssey himself, entirely in his spare time, over the space of two years. That included laying up some of the carbon fiber parts, including the passenger-side dash

panel, rear three-quarter windows and rear window, the manual conversion and all of the electrical work; all of this despite having no formal training and facing the daunting task of starting with a bare chassis. In fact, just about the only things he didn’t do were spot welding the chassis, fitting the body kit and paint. This he left to the guys who made the kit, and who lent him workshop space – wagon tuning specialist Takero’s. You might remember Takero’s from our recent Japan special, as they helped create possibly the

TAKERO'S SPACIOUS ODDITY

THE FIRST TIME I DROVE ONE, I JUST FELT, ‘THIS WOULD GO ALRIGHT ON THE TRACK’. SO I BUILT MY FIRST ONE. world’s only overfendered RS260 Stagea, complete with 2.8-liter, 600-horsepower RB26. However, they also have a long history of tuning Odysseys, especially for track work. Indeed, their current main demo car is a 600-horsepower AWD track-only Odyssey Absolute. So it makes sense that Kawashima-san chose them to help out with the project. But why an Odyssey track car in the first place? “Well, the first time I drove one, I just felt, ‘This would go alright on the track.’ So I built my first one.” Simple, huh? That first one, a lower-spec Odyssey with a K24A lacking VTEC on the exhaust side, wasn’t all that highly tuned, with the stan-

dard motor augmented with some nitrous and your regular track-car mods (coilovers, better brakes, etc.). Sadly, during a shoot for a local magazine, a professional driver hired to extract the best out of it around Tsukuba managed to ignore some low oil pressure warnings and subsequently sent a rod through the block. Given replacing the engine with a higher-spec, dual VTEC Odyssey Absolute model’s (the original plan to fix it) would actually cost more than buying a second-hand Absolute in its entirety. So, Kawashima-san decided to pull the plug on Odyssey number one and move to this current body. Unfortunately, his troubles didn’t end

there. Having built Odyssey number two to a higher spec, complete with turbocharged engine, he found himself staring at a flamefilled engine bay at a Tsukuba track day a couple of years ago after the wastegate actuator failed, over-boosted the engine and led to (yep, you guessed it) another thrown rod. This third time is hopefully the charm, though. Having stripped the car down to the bare chassis after the fire, Kawashima-san decided to start again, and really work on getting things right. As mentioned earlier, he asked Takero’s to spot weld the body, and also modify the front end so the entire engine can come out in 30 minutes flat (handy

when the turbo’s at the back). He then got to work stripping every last ounce of weight from the chassis and modifying it to fit a DC5R manual transmission, OS Giken twin-plate clutch and Cusco LSD, as the previous car’s stock auto set-up – the only transmission ever available from the factory – obviously wasn’t ideal for a circuit racer. After that came the carbon roof, the gold-lined engine bay (just visible with the engine in) and fitting all the mechanical, electrical and interior parts. And just to make sure any subsequent engine fires would be less expensive, Kawashima-san made his own custom electrical board to house all the electronics (including the Garage Zaurus ECU) within the passenger cell. Finally, Takero’s fitted one of its Super Wide kits and painted the whole thing a gorgeous Pure Red. The end result, which only came together in April this year, is simply stunning. Sitting low on

its 18x9.5-inch Prodrive GC07C wheels (+15 at the front and +30 in the rear) and Bridgestone RE11S rubber, and thanks to Takero’s Racing dampers and Merewede springs, the car oozes hardcore presence, helped in no small measure by the Takero’s six-pot front and four-pot rear brakes, complete with 355-mm two-piece rotors all-around. The Takero’s body kit is easily one of the most handsome available for the Odyssey, and adds both useful width and aero functionality at the same time. Moving it around for the shoot, the Takero’s 3.94-inch titanium exhaust makes a nice, growly note, which, when mixed in with the clutch’s signature rattle, really brings home how serious this build is. In case you needed further proof of this, it’s worth noting Kawashima-san set a previous best of around 1:06 at Tsukuba, back when the car was heavier and running an auto with no LSD. In its current spec, he obviously aims to go much lower. Like, one minute flat lower, which is kind of nuts, given it’s still technically a family wagon (albeit one with no interior and a single MOMO

Right now, it’s still in the shakedown phase, so no benchmarks have been set, but come the traditional January time attack season next year, Kawashima-san is aiming to give it all it’s got and see what happens. Hopefully it all hangs together and he can be the first person in the world to dip under the one minute mark at Tsukuba in a minivan. Japan’s modified car scene is one of the few areas of the country’s culture where being truly different isn’t just accepted, it’s celebrated. Kawashima-san’s Odyssey is no exception. It’s always great to see something unique, and when it’s unique, fast and good-looking, well, who can resist?

NOT FAR FROM BOSTON, in the town Boxborough (should be renamed “Boxerborough”), Massachusetts, there’s a shop that’s only a few years-old that operates with Japanese efficiency. Building JDM vehicles with performance and precision in mind, it’s no wonder that Kaizen Tuning’s fleet of GT-Rs and time attack Evos has garnered the attention of the modified car community. Their newest project, however, is a complete departure from their usual chassis and techniques, but it’s still built with all of their Japanese philosophies intact.

aizen Tuning cut its teeth building, tuning and tracking R35 GT-Rs. Scott McIver would bring these near four-digit power-figure beasts out to shows and meets to help promote his business, but because they looked near stock on the outside, they didn’t gain much traction with local enthusiasts. Kaizen Tuning has never been about pro-

viding flash without something to back it up, and McIver knew exactly which platform to build upon. “I have owned eight Subarus, so I’m a Subaru fanatic,” admits McIver. “I find them intriguing and I end up buying one, and usually, they end up breaking my heart.” However, two years after opening his shop and partnering up with Cobb Tuning and Tomei, Mc-

Iver saw himself staring down the barrel of a four-door 2013 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. This Subaru wasn’t to be one to attract just any Impreza enthusiast either. “New England is maybe the largest market in the world for Subaru, there’s millions of them around here,” McIver says. “There are guys that run really cheap ones and guys that like to spend some

money on them, and we wanted to build a car that was going to attract the guys that wanted to spend good money of these cars.” The aim was to bring to life an STI that was attention grabbing, but clean, and fitted with highend, reliable parts – something that could be either parked or driven and people would stop and take a look. One of the most

instrumental parts in achieving this would be provided through Kaizen’s partnership with Varis. Their D widebody kit has become McIver’s favorite aspect of the build. “The way that Varis has built this aggressive body kit, they really wrapped the rally heritage of this car in,” McIver gushes. “Yes, it’s a street body kit, however, you really get a racecar feel with it, and that ties into where we come in. If someone were to build one of these cars for the track, certainly a Varis widebody kit is something we’d want to talk about.” Something about the car that McIver has gotten flack for, however, is retaining the OEM wing on the trunk. Usually, when one goes all in on a Varis kit, they go all out and mount up a big GT wing, but it’s a small detail that reminds McIver this is still a street car. Not that the GT wing is sorely needed anyhow. With all of the carbon fiber air-channeling happening all over the body, Kaizen is doing pretty well in the downforce

department. To really wow the crowds though, McIver sprung for some crowd-pleasing audio from Boston Mobile Concepts and some custom LED lighting. The headlights proudly shine the Kaizen Tuning logo and even the door handles project the company brand for extra show points. The four corners are also well dressed, with some serious Volk TE37RT wheels in 18x11-inch fitment all around. Now, before you think I’m describing a hardparker, let me get to some of the good stuff. Under the hood, just about anything Perrin

makes has found a home. Fuel upgrades, intercooler, intake, covers, piping, pulleys, blow-off valves – it’s all there, in matching red. Providing the extra kick and taking advantage of the Perrin catalog in the bay is Cobb’s AccessPort V3 engine management system with a custom Kaizen Tuning tune. This Impreza is pushing about 300 horsepower at the wheels and, while that might not sound like much, at the end of the day this car still has to be street driven – a fact that’s been hard for McIver to come to terms with.

“The biggest challenge was holding myself back,” he admits. “I’m a person that overdoes everything. Our time-attack Evolution 10 started this way – the same way this car did – and ended up being this ridiculous racecar that I could never have on the street ever again. I really held back from doing a big turbo kit, or doing anything too insane to the motor because I knew that I wanted this car to be something someone could aspire to.” Letting the car exhale a little easier is a fantastic sounding system made up of an up- and down-pipe with a UEL header (for bonus boxer burble) from Tomei, which have teamed up with an HKS Legamax exhaust to accentuate its throaty growl. Perrin chassis bracing, sway

bars, endlinks and their Super Steer kit further exploit the increased handling performance offered by the BC Racing BR coilovers under the STI’s wider haunches. Although its performance and looks are all very alluring, McIver says that it’s actually what’s inside that counts. “People see the interior and they immediately want to be in this car,” he laughs. “I’ve gone to a show, turned around to talk to a customer to sell him a t-shirt or something like that, only to find there are like five girls and a guy in this car when I turn back around. That sort of thing happens a lot.” Who can blame them? A full custom Alcantara interior with red accent stitching, custom carbon fiber work, a pair of Bride Stradia II Japan Edition seats and upgraded LED lighting make it a great place to sit. So, after all the work that has gone into this STI, is it all worth it in the end? Well, when it debuted

at Import Expo in Atlantic City, it went home with Best Subaru and runner up for Best in Show. Not bad for its first time out. The Subaru had exactly the desired effect McIver hoped it would. “We brought a 1,000-horsepower GT-R to the same show and nobody batted an eye at it – no one even looked at it,” McIver recalls. “They were like, ‘Oh, it’s a GT-R and it has 1,000 horsepower? Who cares, it looks stock.’ But yet they went bananas over this STI! We knew we were on to something good there.” McIver credits his inspiration to build a car of this level to his obsession with the Japanese’s attention to detail and pursuit of perfection. It’s what lead him to name his company Kaizen, which means to “constantly improve.” Building one of the nicest STIs on the planet after two years of opening your doors is quite something to top and improve upon, but knowing McIver, we should be super excited about what’s to come.

It’s a truth that can apply to many things in life, yes, but it’s especially pertinent in the automotive sphere. Think about it: if you want good wheels for your car, are you going to go with some new Advans, or the latest rip-off design from 4RGD WH33LZ 4U (bonus points if you could read that the first time through)? Exactly! So, when Ravi Ayyagari, owner of Umbrella Auto Design gave me a call and said he had something special for me, you bet your ass I was listening.

ords like supercharged, widebody, Sorcery, lift system, Focal and restoration piqued my interest. Then I saw the images of this NSX and I was infatuated. So much so there was no choice but to put its smug mug on our cover. This is a car that leaves no bolt unturned. It checks all the boxes. It says “Style / Technology / Performance” right under our name. And this NSX gets an A+ under each heading. Ayyagari is accustomed to taking on work from out of state. If it’s exotic and destined to be wider, it goes to him at Umbrella Auto Design. This project was different in the fact that it was a local from Seattle looking to take his father and son bonding project to the next level. David purchased the 2000 Acura NSX about 12 years ago, spurred by his son Jordan’s interest in sportscars and their shared love of anything on wheels. He and Ayyagari got to talking about where this car was headed. “David gave me some ideas of what he was looking for,” Ayyagari says. “The widebody NSX is what

my shop is known for, so we started brainstorming and looking at pictures at a few different body kits from one of my vendors, Sorcery Japan.” After shaking their heads at a couple of kits, Ayyagari gave his friends at Sorcery a ring to see if they had anything off-menu. Turns out they did – in the form of the brand-new T12 widebody kit. An order for that kit would mean a

second T12 would be introduced to the world and North America would get its first. With both of them in agreement on the T12, boxes for the NSX R GT replica bumper and custom rear spats from an Alpine Electronics Tokyo Auto Salon car were also checked off and parts sent away for. Because building cars is never easy or straightforward, some kind of difficulty was bound to

come up. The issue reared its ugly head as soon as Ayyagari started digging into the NSX to install the CT Engineering manifold, headers and carbon fiber intake. “When I reached down to disconnect the front motor mount, there was no bolt in it,” laughs Ayyagari, though he probably wasn’t laughing at the time. “I got the cross member out and looked up and saw oil just dumping out of the front of the engine. I investigated and found that there was no gasket in the valve cover.” The unfortunate discovery was relayed to David and he agreed that there should be no chances taken, and so the restoration of the NSX began. The subframe, engine and transmission were dropped in and given a deep clean via toothbrushes and special solvents. Absolutely everything was replaced; seals and hardware in the engine, and new synchros and bearings with a better power-rated clutch from CT Engineering for the transmission – a sign of things to come. When it was all back in the car and running, the CT Engineering supercharger featuring a larger displacement 2.3-liter Lysholm blower core was added. The 2.3

allows the blower core to provide boost without having to be spun extremely fast, which must have made the tuning forks at Carburetor Connection very happy. When all is said and done, the car is pushing approximately 390 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque, a number that Ayyagari was more than happy with for his goals. I really wanted to make sure this would be a long-lasting and reliable build,” he says. “It’s not a car you have to tweak every time you drive it. I wanted it to be reliable and fast and that’s how the shop tuned it.” A short while after, the body pieces started arriving, so the NSX migrated from the dyno to Umbrella HQ, where it received treatment of the highest quality. Something you won’t see, but makes a world of difference, is the use of “rivnuts” throughout the chassis and body kit. When some shops go about installing kits, they’ll use trusty self-tapping screws, but that doesn’t fly with Ayyagari. He uses rivets with threaded holes in them, measured to OEM thread spec. It’s way more time consuming, but it

gives an OEM-plus final product. When everything was fitted, the outside of the NSX was sent to the paint shop, while the interior stayed behind to be completely re-trimmed. As the Lamborghini Aventador Rosso Mars paint job (fully protected by XPEL's "selfhealing" paint protection film) was to take a good six months, Ayyagari could take his time putting together the onyx Ultrasuede interior. “[Ultrasuede is] a furnituregrade microfiber, so it’s extremely strong,” Ayyagari explains. “On top of that, the entire interior is treated with Microseal, which is an aerospace fabric protector. It improves the UV protection and makes it even more durable.” Even the Cobra Misano carbon fiber seats and MOMO Tomcat steering wheel are covered in onyx Ultrasuede. In any performance-oriented car, even ones that look this nice, you’re going to want some solid legs to keep up with the new horses introduced to the stable. The JRZ RS PRO coilovers have external reservoirs, countless years of professional racing development and even some Swift springs to bolster them, but Ayyagari felt that David’s NSX could use some options as well. Umbrella Auto Design’s own VRH lift system was

added to give the car about three inches of up and down for whatever the road may throw at it. Fun fact: this same system was used and installed by Ayyagardi on some of the vehicles in Furious 7. To bring the NSX down, StopTech’s Trophy big brake kit, with 328-mm rotors and stainless lines, was chosen. This system is a favorite of Ayyagardi’s and was a no-brainer for inclusion on this stellar build. Now, when looking under the haunches of this NSX, you might expect to see some seven-piece, caviar-plated wheels forged in the fires of Mount Doom. Nope! What takes up residence there are some classic Advan GTs. While they may not be the flashiest, which was never the aim with this build, they are an extremely special one-off set. NSXs run a staggered fitment, but the size difference became a problem when ordering the chosen GTs. “We wanted to run 18 inches in the front and 19 in the rear, but Yokohama does not offer the same colors in 18 that they do in 19,” Ayyagardi explains. “So, we

contacted Mackin Industries and we asked them to ask Yokohama to do us a favor and make the wheels for us, just one set.” And they did it! Being the nice guys they are, Yokohama pumped out a one-off staggered set in David's chosen color. Yokohama weren’t the only nice guys involved in this build though. Remember when I said that this build checks all the boxes? In the audio department, this NSX is definitely no slouch. Before getting revamped, it was rocking some older 6.5-inch Focal speakers in the doors. Wanting to match the performance, Ayyagari reached out to Orca Design to see what else Focal had on offer. Everyone was pretty surprised when they turned around with the Utopia Be set. If you’re scratching you’re head, allow me to explain: Utopia Be is the Bugatti Veyron of Focal’s lineup and the pinnacle of sound quality. Consisting of a set of mid-bass drivers, a pair of pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeters and an eight-inch Utopia subwoofer, and all powered by the capable FPD600.4 Focal amplifier. This is the system you get when even the best won’t do. I mean, the baffles are made of Swarovski crystal. No, I’m not joking. After two-and-a-half years of

building, and when the NSX was finished and got the thumbs up from both builder and owner, the question of ‘How to keep this thing in perfect condition?’ popped up. No matter how much it may look like it, this NSX isn’t a showpiece; it was built to be enjoyed. Barring whatever may happen on the street, David still has a house and garage that sees high traffic. Kids, dogs, skateboards, the works come through where the NSX was to sleep. Ayyagari had an idea. “I said, ‘You should just build a glass booth in the garage,’ and he says ‘That’s an interesting idea! I think I’ll look into it,’” he laughs. “He just decided to go with it.” Why not, right? Custom-built aluminum frames and rollers hold up the one-inch-thick glass that makes up the booth (see front cover), which takes on the double duty of protection and show. The glass was actually surplus material from a building that was being taken down in eastern Washington. David even had LEDs set up in all the right places as well, which was a major factor in what made the choice for cover image so easy. This car is something special. It’s a mix of attainable and aspirational. Attainable because NSXs are just starting to climb in price, and aspirational because of the level of craftsmanship and drool-worthy parts involved. On top of it all, though it started out as a bonding experience, it’s now a family heirloom. Something like this doesn’t come along everyday, but when it does, it deserves to be celebrated.

T

his jewel is easily one of the world’s most perfectly balanced Supras, and quite possibly the most beautiful JZA80 I’ve ever had the pleasure of positioning in front of my lens. If you know anything about Manabu “Max” Orido, you may already know where this article is headed. Ridox, a brand known to Supra enthusiasts across the globe, is Orido’s outlet for his

passion for the chassis. Needless to say, Max Orido knows the JZA80 Supra better than most. For the sake of my journalistic endeavors and your joy and satisfaction as readers of this fine magazine, let’s look closer at what makes this one of the best Supras in the world. Not because of extrinsic matters like power figures and quarter-mile strip times, but because of the man who envisioned and built it.

The Supra has a very strong, yet somewhat maligned image internationally amongst enthusiasts for reasons that, more often than not, make little sense in a logical discussion. The JZA80 is the Nissan Skyline GT-R’s natural born enemy, but it is somehow commonly referred to as a bit of an ocean liner despite only weighing 3,218 pounds in full trim. It is often spoken of as useful only in straight line applications despite

its race results and pedigree clearly contradicting this. Incidentally, the Supra held the mantle as the only production car made that could brake from 70 mph to a standstill in a mere 45 meters, a title it held for seven years until the day the Porsche Carrera GT did it in one meter less. Obviously weight, and the way the Supra handles it, are beyond reproach. So, arguments on performance aside, it makes perfect sense as to why Orido loves the JZA80 since he has driven, built and owned one in every single tune you can name, including the most hardcore of them all in the JGTC, the GT500-class Denso SARD and Eclipse Advan Supras. This particular rebuild is what Orido refers to as a “semi-restoration” and he went to great pains to explain that it is, “…neither a race car, a drift car nor drag car. This is my street car,” he continues, “and represents my impression of what the perfect street Supra should look, feel and drive like.” Resplendent in “Max Red” paint

(yes, the color is actually named after Orido), the JZA80 benefits aesthetically from a delicious mix of Ridox, Tamon Design and Varis bodywork items; the Ridox items themselves make up the bulk of the carbon fiber you see on the exterior. Max goes on to explain, “This is the last Ridox Type I JZA80 I’ll build before bringing out the Type II version of the body kit, which is currently in the design stage.” That’s not to suggest there’s anything wrong with the Type I. Just look at it! The combination of the flowing carbon curves, accentuated in red and black over ever-increasing levels of rearward downforce-inducing and lap time-reducing function, can’t be overlooked. It strikes a beautiful figure. Orido walked me around the car pointing out little details and things I might have missed, at one point proudly recounting how the door mirrors were kept stock and black to accentuate the rest of the car. If you look closely at the bonnet, you’ll notice the neat little bonnet pins

that hold it down; an unobtrusive “push-button” type that really helps keep visuals clean and simple. It is often the small things that matter, but Max pretty much nailed the philosophy behind the car’s purpose. “It’s all about balance. To me, the Supra must be as balanced mechanically as it is aesthetically.” Solid words. Pulling on the handle, the big door on the passenger side swung open and I immediately noticed the glorious looking carbon fiber door panels. “I got them from a Yahoo! auction!” he beamed and with his signature bent smile added, “They were ¥100,000 delivered…” I was aghast. “You mean to tell me this pair of boards cost you less than a thousand bucks from an online auction?” The smile broadened. “Hai. So desu.” And he didn’t stop there as we walked around to the rear of the Supra. “These tail-

I didn’t want to rice out the car with unnecessary modifications, so I kept it as factory specific as I could.” It’s hard for me to pull myself away from the visual aspects of the car to focus on the mechanicals, but this review and everyone who is reading it would be cheated if I didn’t provide some smackdown in the go-hard department. Orido-san, as previously mentioned, wants to send a clear message with this car. This is Max running the streets and, for that reason, he was in two minds on whether to keep the car manual or install an automatic transmission. I wanted to make sure it was done right, first time out of the box.” The engine puts out just over 600 horsepower and 506 lb-ft of torque, courtesy of the HKS T04Z snail, HKS intercooler and custom exhaust arrangement; and this with only 1.3 bar (18 psi) of boost. That’s impressive, but daily-drivable tractability was paramount. The power drives through an Ogura Racing twin-plate clutch, pressure plate and flywheel set, spinning its way through to a two-way HKS differential. Stopping the force is a set of Endless calipers, pads and rotors, which are housed by extremely light 19-inch Advan GT Racing wheels wrapped in Orido’s signature Yokohama Advan AD08 rubber measuring 255/35 in the front and 295/30 in the rear. The whole system is suspended by Tein Monoflex dampers. Max has spent just as much time considering the interior as he has the exterior and mechanicals. The newly-created Bride “Edrib” 033 semi-bucket seats for both driver and passenger hint at serious intent. The roll cage is a standout and contrasts beautifully against the black and gray interior. “I was coming back from Fuji Speedway one day when a Porsche pulled up alongside and I saw it had a red roll cage. I thought, ‘Oh yeah, that’s cool – I’m definitely fitting one to the

He really does appreciate the finer touches to a build. It’s hard at the best of times to pen a feature on a car as amazing as this without feeling like the article will be consumed one day and (hopefully not) forgotten the next. But Orido-san is one of the best known exports for Japanese automotive culture and I’m happy to consider him among my friends in the game. Ridox and Max go back to the roots of the JZA80 Supra, and it doesn’t look like he’s slowing down with the developments. Soon, you’ll see the fruits of that labor, and we will of course be there to cover it. I can’t think of a finer Supra anywhere on the planet. Seriously. I’ve seen too many to count, but this one, considering the sum of its parts, balanced with the attention to detail and philosophical approach to its conception, boosts it to a different league of consideration. Simply put, Manabu Orido knows how to take a Supra to the max.

sion: Impossible movie, right? But seriously. Kiely Mackey and his splendid S15 cross-bred Silvia Spec-R could have starring roles in this fantastical film. Because 2JZ everything. So, how did this all begin? With family, of course. “Every aspect of my family is rooted in automobiles,” states Mackey. “My father ran a body shop, a trucking company, a used car lot and a wholesale business. When he passed in 2007, it shifted

my build/sell/repeat habit into high gear. Maybe I’m trying to build all of my dream cars before I keel over.” In the last four years, Mackey has built and sold an LS1-swapped R32 Skyline - built to ProAm drift spec with a ’92 LS400 manual transmission - and a ’69 Camaro with a potent LS/T56 “Trans Am” series setup for road racing. a Shell garage station,” Mackey recalls. “It was stripped and had had its drivetrain installed in a U.S.-spec S14. I traded a rough R32 for the shell and brought the poor car back from the dead.” Back from the dead is an understatement of the highest order. Originally planned for another LS-swap, that plan went out the window when Ben and Billy Freed of Freed Engineering offered him a deal on a 2JZ VVTI motor. The die was cast.

“Someone bought my LS engine and Freed sold me a cheap 2J,” Mackey says. “The rest was a blur of spending and building.” Mackey has some strong words for people who say you can’t build a drift car like this on a tight budget. “I built this car on a shoestring budget,” he scolds. “I earn $500 a week at a restoration shop and do not have a shop or garage of my own. I stayed up most nights doing side work for friends to earn the money to build this car or simply to

rent a place to do some building in. Anyone can build a solid drift car, even on a highschool budget,” he continues. “Stop making excuses, stop buying the wrong parts and start studying, saving and building all that you can with friends and on your own!” What does this list of “right” parts include? Oh, where to begin? An AEM V2 engine management system meant for a four-cylinder Honda B18 has been modified to work with the six-cylinder VVTI

A Borg Warner S366 twin-scroll turbocharger, Tial 50-mm blow-off valve and 44-mm wastegate, Walbro E85-rated fuel pump and MagnaFuel rail and pressure regulator, Injector Dynamics IDI 1000 injectors, a GReddy “R” intercooler, and a whole bunch of fabrication work in the tubes, wiring, mounts and transmission tunnel all bear mention. There’s absolutely no easy path to stuff a 2JZ into a Silvia and mate it to a six-speed 370Z transmission. Here are a few of the issues he faced: “The ECU wouldn’t talk to the dash and the VVTI wouldn’t work,” Mackey begins. “The trans did not fit the tunnel, the turbo hit the tower, the diff flange hit the K member, the trans adapter needed milling down to fit in the tunnel, the

The list goes on - all of it was fun though!” A 350Z rear differential housing featuring a two-way locking OS Giken limited-slip was custommounted, and required 350Z-to300Z axle shafts and a longer driveshaft with 350Z yokes on it. A Maverick Motorsports 12-pound adapter flywheel converted the 2JZ crank to the Z1 Motorsports Stage 2 370Z clutch. It’s at this point we’re thinking it might have been easier to simply have started with a 370Z and just install the 2JZ into it. Mackey credits Freed Engineering for making all the parts “play nicely together,” and the tuning, which laid down a stout 621 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque from

the otherwise stock 2JZ internals. That’s enough power for anyone to look like Keiichi Tsuchiya behind the wheel. The OEM Spec-R anti-roll bars remain, but ISIS parts have been swapped into the rear for the upper control, traction and tension rods. PBM rack centrics and Maverick offset rack spacers help with the drift-friendly alignment needs. BC Racing coilovers with Swift springs set the chassis low over the Work Meister S1 two-piece wheels, sized 17-inches in front and 18 in the rear. The front brakes are the everpopular 300ZX four-pot calipers on 12.75-inch Brembo rotors, while the rear setup uses four separate two-piston clampers, an ISIS hydraulic e-brake assembly, Ford Mustang Cobra rear rotors and a

Mackey's D1GP influence can clearly be inferred from the outward appearance. “I fell in love with the look of Japanese Evome time attack cars and pretty much anything seen on the Narita Dogfight blog,” he says. “That is why I hung all of the crazy aero stuff on the car. I spent nights on end Googling and saving pics of those parts and tried my best to replicate them in my friend’s garage with hand tools.” Mackey’s training at his day job paid off in the seamless way the mix of the C-west front bumper, the Dmax Type 2 rear bumper, side skirts and two-inch rear over-fenders work with the striking electric blue metallic water-based paint to recreate a grid-ready D1GP ap-

pearance. The APR GT300 rear wing looks terrific with all the custommade add-ons Mackey created. On a final note, sure to further inflame the Nissan faithful, the hood vents come from a 2014 Mustang. Take that, purists. This is truly a unique car from stem to sterm, from the rubber to the roof. There’s a good deal of solid engineering mixed right in with the whimsical and sometimes downright mad-science-level American ingenuity happening here, and we love it. Most likely, you’ll never see this car in an action flick, outside of a high-speed, drift-inducing Scandanavian one. It’s probably for the best though; Tom Cruise wrecks everything he drives on film. Wrecking a Silvia this nice would be truly criminal.

I

n a span of eight years, during what could be considered the glory days of Sport Compact Drag Racing, Lisa Kubo won over 35 events, all while also racking up an impressive list of championships. In 2004, she went undefeated in the NOPI/NDRA Pro Outlaw FWD class in a car equipped with less computational power than the smartphone in your pocket. She was the first FWD driver in history to break into the seven-second zone. To say she’s fast, consistent or supremely professional would be a cliched understatement. She’s humble about her achievements, but, as they say, it’s not bragging if you’ve done it. And has she ever!

PAS: Are you still doing some racing or do you find your interests have changed as you’ve grown older? How has your life changed today? LK: I’ve been quietly involved as much as I can in the sport of drag racing, and I’ve done some work over in Formula Drift for a couple seasons and enjoyed it as well. My passion and true love is drag racing without a doubt! However, the responsibilities of being a responsible adult are ever growing. As the years progress, my priorities are a lot more diverse to prepare for the future.

Who were your primary drag (or track) racing influences when you were younger? The biggest and only impactful influence I had, and still have today, is Shirley Muldowney. When I was a young girl in the 1980s, I waited in line to get her autograph and saw how she was so interactive with the crowd and confident. You could feel how much she truly loved what she did. I still think about that daily. She was and still is a beautiful person, innovator, champion, excellent role model – a life-long impression she will leave me with.

LEGENDS At your peak, did you have the feeling you were onto something remarkable, or were you focused on that next event or next race? I never thought I was onto something remarkable, my head was always in the game and focused during the events. I am sort of what you can call a perfectionist when it came to my cars. I’d always say, ‘How can I better myself? How can I make myself as close to perfect as possible?’ I wanted to become an unbreakable machine during my final season racing my Civic with consistency; not miss any gears, qualify at the top in every event, set records and become the third overall and first female to run eightsecond ETs in a front-wheel-drive, win races and championships. When I moved into my Saturn Pro FWD car, we were determined as a privately backed team representing the Saturn flagship to become the first ever front-wheel-drive to run a seven-second ET in history, which we did in April 2004 at NHRA in Moroso, Florida. Did you face any challenges in dealing with sponsors who were unsure about sponsoring a female driver in what is viewed as a primarily male sport? Absolutely! Back when my car was still in progress, a good friend and competitor of mine was sponsored by a company and suggested that they should get me on their team of cars to add to some diversity. But to my shock and disbelief, the expression on the sponsorship recruiter’s face was kind of like, “Are you kidding? For real?” It was like it was a joke that my car was going to be a top runner one day. I was a little disturbed by this incident, but I knew it was going to be an uphill battle and I was going to have to push myself beyond the limits of the average pro driver of that era. Just winning some races was not good enough; I wanted to dominate the industry and leave an impression. Can you walk us through what it was like staging and racing one of the fastest FWD cars in the world? What’s it like when the steering wheel is spinning violently? Staging both race cars was basically the same. I had set up what is considered to be a three-step rev limiter controller, my crew guy would get me to about a foot before the pre-stage beam and I’d hit my first rev-limiter (pre-stage rev-limiter) at wide open throttle, which was set to about 3,000 rpm. This way the car was just about to go into boost as I lit the pre-stage bulb. I’d creep the car in with the clutch loaded and I would modulate the hand brake to keep the suspension loaded and compressed. Mind you, my staging brake locked both front and rear wheels to allow me to load the clutch to the 104

This also gave me the extra measure of accuracy and consistency when people would play staging games with me. I knew subconsciously that if I maintained wide open throttle that I was okay, allowing me to focus on the lights and to stage as shallow as possible. Loading the clutch, as mentioned, allowed me to barely take my foot off the clutch pedal, allowing the car to leave or make a move immediately without blowing the tires away. Mind you, back in the day there was little to no use of traction control, boost versus wheel speed or anything fancy like what is commonly used in today’s high-tech systems. We all had to drive our cars by feel to run the numbers and mold ourselves with repetitive runs to become consistent. Keeping in mind that track and conditions always varied, experience played a huge role in success in what I consider the Golden Era of sanctioned sport compact racing.

I kept creeping the car to stage as shallow as possible. Next, at that exact moment when I was fully staged, I’d let go of the pre-stage limiter, which activated my two-step rev-limiter, which was set up to disarm when I disengaged the clutch pedal. Note: I have engaged wide open throttle starting a foot before the pre-stage beam on a staged rev-limiter. I wanted consistency and this allowed me to focus on my staging procedure rather than randomly blip the throttle and hope to God you are in the correct rpm range and launch boost levels.

Did you have any pre-race superstitions or good luck charms? I’m not one of those racers that didn’t like the color green or anything like that. My superstition was before I got on a plane or left on the road, everything had to be pristine clean; my apartment, my house, my cars, the race car, the front and backyard had to be perfect. Did I mention I like to think of myself as a perfectionist? And I still have all my good luck charms! People would come and zip-tie money onto my roll cage and I’d never touch it. Cool story: We had met these two guys from the islands who gave me $200 to take my team to eat. We all decided that it was tradition and money was a good luck charm, so we zip-tied it to the cage. We even told the guys this was going to be the good luck charm to run eights and the next day we ran an 8.94 @ 161 mph at Bradenton, Florida.

TUNING How much of the wrenching did you get do on your cars? Did you have input into how the cars were set up to meet your preferences, or did your team do a great job of giving you cars which were perfect to drive? During the very beginning years of my Civic I had no choice but to physically help work on the car. It was only three of us total, and we weren’t traveling at that point, so my team was local guys and girls. I knew I had to put in the effort to follow my dream. Once we got to the competitive professional level, it wasn’t time efficient for me to work on the car anymore. There was sponsorship interaction, media, PR, budgeting and logistics. Racing was the only source of income. Every penny counted and every minute of the day was dedicated to keeping an air tight system. How the clutch and staging brake were set up was my input. After every run, I’d relay feedback and they would compare the data and make changes if necessary. 106

It’s been said that the way to get a little fortune in racing is to start with a big fortune; between winnings and pay, how much did you earn as a professional driver for 12 years? That is so true! We started with a small “fortune” that was from me working four jobs and selling my street car to put funds into the Civic. And to make this very clear, there was zero financial help from any parents or family members. This was a very grounding experience. I didn’t have unlimited resources or funds to make unlimited mistakes! Eventually, with the help of sponsors and the industry in general, I did well enough to be able to follow my dream. What influences in your childhood do you feel were responsible for your interest in going fast? Was it a family thing passed down from a parent or older sibling? Being very competitive by nature since I was a child, starting from first grade until ninth grade, I was a top track runner. I was a 50-yard

and 100-yard short distance sprinter. My family started me out at the street races at two weeks old! As I got older, it became impossible to get me out of the car when my father lined a race up, so instead of fighting a screaming child, he buckled me in the backseat, put a helmet on me and raced. (As a responsible adult, I would never condone this today.) How much time did you have to spend on the road “back in the day” traveling with your team? In the Civic days I lived on the road. I lived in Virginia with my team. I lived in Texas with Kenny Tran of Jotech Motorsports, Drew and Willy from Deepstage Motorsports and Alex from Hocuspocus in Houston. Darrell Cox of Phatridz Motorsports in Eden, North Carolina let us park our rig in their lot. It was very touching because people believed in us so strongly, and they offered whatever assistance they could to allow us to make it to every race for the racing series and to continue on for our championships! Who were the key members of your team; the indispensables who made the hard bits and pieces? My team consisted of Gary Kubo, Mike Kim, Charles Schafer, Jeff Tirado, Arthur Armendariz and Michael Spraker. The beginning days of my Civic build was Mike McNutt, Charles Cha, Renee Cardenas, Robert Kwan and Masina Reyes. And if no one knew, in 2001 Myles Bautista and Lisa teamed up and formed MBLK, which consisted of Lisa, Myles and Tony Fuchs. What advice do you have for our readers who share your interest in drag racing? What I would say today is the same thing I told people back in the day who would ask advice, male or female: Don’t listen to the bullshit or haters; follow your dreams! Remember the law of attraction, if you attract constant negativity and failure, you will get exactly what you asked for.

There you have it; the answer to life, the universe and everything. If your universe includes drag racing, you now hold one of the keys to a 197-mph run in your hands. Use it wisely. The other keys may be somewhat harder to obtain.

Twenty years ago, Joe Chan’s interest in racing led him to set up a business supporting other racers. He had started out in karting and then, with he and his brother, racing cars. One day out on the track ,he broke an oil line, and despite the oil dumping out, he drove the car back to the pits. The engine survived and went on to contest the final two races of the season.

his convinced him of the value of MOTUL synthetic oil, a French product then little known in Canada. He set up, with a partner, the distribution source for the oil for the automotive market in Canada. Since then, he has branched out into a number of different racing-related business activities under the name Paragon Competition, which is based in Vaughan, Ontario, just north of Toronto. At the front of the store is a wide assortment of items for drivers – the top lines of helmets, seat belts, seats, driver suits, shoes, etc. – as well as lubricants and other car items.

The shop has a staff of six people, but it is not an Internet sales operation. Chan is adamant that many of the pieces of driver equipment, such as helmets, must be properly fitted in person, noting that he has seen people turn up at lapping days with items that were such a misfit that they were dangerous. Once you pass through the doors to the space at the back, you see another part of Chan’s business. Despite the up-front appearance of being a small business, he has an extensive stock, making it almost certain he can pull the items off the shelf needed to fit the customer. In addition to the front-of-store stock, there is a section of MOTUL lubricants, Hoosier racing tires, shock and suspension pieces, and more. Chan is a specialist in dampers and suspension and sells various well-known brands for

suspension parts. Using the in-house shock dyno, they are able to fine tune the customers’ suspension for various applications, such as lapping days and racing. With his extensive and continuing history as a race driver, Chan is able to coach car owners who want to get started in lapping days. He continues to be an active racer. Recently, he has raced a Chevrolet Cobalt, which is now resting under a cover in the back shop. Last year, he won a regional class championship in a Camaro, a car which he has since sold off. He also had a yellow “spec” Miata NB, which he has raced in SCCA races down south in the winter months. This year, he is behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Super Trofeo in the North American branch of this one-make series. In his first outing this year, at Laguna Seca, he finished third in the Gallardo Amateur class. In addition to serving customers in the shop in Vaughan, they have a track-side trailer that offers support at selected Canadian Tire Motorsport Park events.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AS A MODEL? I'm confident. I know where my strengths are, like being able to socialize with people. I'm quick-witted, which works out nicely for being on stage hosting, and I think I have a great set of eyes. My blues are truly unique.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM CAR? My dream car, since we're dreaming, is an Aston Martin Vanquish. Oh my god! I shot in one of these and it was beautiful! It's going on my wish list for Christmas this year! I mean, we're still dreaming, right?

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? My future plans are to graduate from college with my degree in Astronautical Engineering, move to California, and start my career there. Once I have my beach and work, I'll be a happy girl.
